Delivery Type Determination at Delivery Creation
Deliveries are usually created with reference to an order: purchase order for inbound delivery, sales order for outbound delivery, stock transport order for replenishment delivery, purchase order for vendor return delivery, and so on. In these cases, the delivery type is derived from the reference order. The delivery type is determined automatically in the background and cannot be changed. The determination rules themselves are fixed and cannot be adjusted in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition .
You can also create outbound deliveries without reference to a sales order. In this case, you must specify the delivery type manually by selecting the desired delivery type from a limited list of possible choices.

The previous video explained the significance of item categories. It also showed you how to access the configuration activity to maintain them.
The following describes how the system determines the item category for a delivery item and how you can configure that determination.
Item Category Determination at Delivery Creation
When you create a delivery document with reference to a sales order, the system copies the item category of the order item to the delivery item .
Of course, it is not possible to copy the item category from a sales order for items in a delivery that do not reference a sales order item (for example, packaging material), for deliveries without reference to an order, or for inbound deliveries (for example, delivery type EL for a purchase order). For these delivery items, the system determines the item category during delivery item creation .
The item category determination can be configured according to the following parameters:
The delivery type of the delivery document
The item category group of the material specified in the delivery item
The item category group is maintained in the material master record. Examples of item category groups include standard (NORM), third-party item (BANS), service (SERV), make-to-order (CB04), and so on.
The item category usage
The item category usage is defined internally and is used to identify very specific functions and scenarios, such as:
- PACK for packaging item
- CHSP for batch split
- V for inbound deliveries for purchase orders and for deliveries in stock transfer processes
The item category usage is set by the internal programming logic of SAP S/4HANA Cloud when such specific scenarios are detected. This means that the system may determine a different item category for delivery items resulting from processes that use these specific functions.
The item category of the higher-level item
If the delivery item is a sub-item, the system has already determined the item category for the higher-level item. This is then used to influence the determination of the item category for the sub-item.
The item category determination for delivery items without reference to sales order items is predefined and meets all requirements in most cases.
However, if you need to adjust it, in our configuration environment, locate and select the Define Item Category Determination in Deliveries configuration activity.

Assign Sales Documents and Delivery Documents in SAP
In this SAP SD Tutorial , you will learn how assign sales documents and delivery documents in SAP using navigation menu path and transaction code OVAK & OVAD.
Purpose of Configuration
After defining credit groups in SAP , you need to assign sales documents and delivery documents to a particular credit groups for checking the customer credit limits.
How to Assign Sales Documents and Delivery documents in SAP?
The link between sales document type and credit group is established through through the assignment of sales document to credit group, link between delivery documents and credit group is established through assigning delivery documents to credit groups in SAP.
Step 1 : – Execute Tcode “SPRO” from SAP easy access screen.
Step 2 : – Choose display SAP reference IMG (F5).
Step 3 : – From display IMG screen, follow the navigation menu path and choose img activity SD -Basic functions -credit management and “Assign sales documents and delivery documents.
Step 4 : – A choose activity dialog box appears with the activities
- Credit limit check for order types
- Credit limit check for delivery types.
Assign Sales Documents
Step 5: – Double click on credit limit check for order types for assigning a credit group to the sales document type which is sales order type.
On change view sales document types – credit limit check overview screen, select the required sales document types and assign credit group key T1.
Click on save button to save the details.
Assign Delivery Documents
Press F3 or click on back option, from choose activity screen, double click on credit limit check for delivery types.
Select the required delivery type and assign the corresponding credit groups respectively to block the delivery and goods issue.
After assigning document types for credit limit check, click on save button and save the configured assignment details in SAP Systems .

You would like to change the number range for a delivery type from like "NL80000000" to "NL89999999".

Please follow the configuration steps:
- Create a custom number range intervals e.g. "ZI" for "NL80000000" to "NL89999999" via configuration activity Define Number Ranges for Deliveries.
- Create a Formula; e.g. "Z_NUM_LF"
- Assign parameter "DELIVERYTYPE" to the formula
- For formula task "SET_NUMBER_RANGE" assign prio "1" to parameter "DELIVERYTYPE"
- Operator: =
- Delivery Type: LF
- Number Range Interval: ZI
- Perform the configuration activity Define Custom Routines for Flexible Delivery Document Numbering. Here, register a routine number and assign it your formula by selecting the implementation type Configurable Parameters and Formulas (CPF) and entering the formula ID as the enhancement ID "Z_NUM_LF" Your formula (including its decision table) is now mapped to the routine number.
- Perform the configuration activity Assign Custom Routines to Delivery Document Types. Choose the delivery type LF. Then, enter the routine number that you registered in the previous step to assign the chosen delivery type to the target formula.
