An incredible time to visit hilly destinations with family are holidays. They give an escape from the same monotonous life schedule. The summer season is an incredible time to have those stress free excursions and get in touch with nature which is nearly impossible in our daily schedules for the whole year. I visited my grandparents last year and stayed with them for two weeks. In contrast with the word summer, the cool thing about summer vacations is discovering new trails, creating new things, etc. During my stay with my grandparents, I also read novels and other books that helped me expand my knowledge of the world. For the remainder of the vacation days, I spent them playing games and cooking my favourite dishes.

Summer is a time to bask in the warmth of the sun, explore new horizons, and create lasting memories.

During this break, I embarked on a journey of relaxation and adventure. I had the opportunity to visit the serene beaches of a coastal town. The soothing sound of waves and the gentle caress of the sea breeze offered a perfect escape from the bustling city life. The sand between my toes and the sun kissing my skin provided a sense of tranquillity.

Holidays are an amazing time for us to visit hill stations with family. The summer season is a great time for us to take stress-free trips and get to trek in nature, which we aren’t able to do in our busy schedules for the entire year. Last year I visited my grandparents and stayed with them for 20 days. The best thing about the summer holidays is creating and discovering new things in the village. While enjoying my stay, I also learned some new things that expanded my knowledge. I spent the rest of the summer holidays playing board and video games and cooking under my mother’s supervision.

As the summer days slowly waned, a sense of nostalgia crept in. The memories and lessons from this summer vacation will continue to shape my journey as I return to the world of academics with renewed vigour and a heart full of gratitude.

Summer vacation, that much-awaited break from the mundane routines of school and study, is a time of rejuvenation, exploration, and personal growth. It offers the perfect opportunity to unwind, reflect, and create lasting memories.

During this past summer vacation, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and adventure. The journey began with a sense of anticipation and excitement, as I bid adieu to textbooks and classrooms. My destination was a coastal paradise, where golden sands met the azure sea. The tranquil rhythm of the waves provided a serene backdrop for relaxation, reflection, and renewal.

The break also provided ample time for cultural exploration. I wandered through quaint streets, explored historical sites, and engaged with locals to gain insights into their way of life. Trying local cuisine became a delightful adventure in itself, as I savoured flavours that were a symphony of tradition and innovation.

Amidst exploration, I found time to reconnect with my family. Shared laughter, deep conversations, and moments of camaraderie became the heart of the vacation. We hiked through lush trails, picnicked in meadows, and watched sunsets that painted the sky in hues of orange and pink. These experiences solidified the bonds that make family the cornerstone of our lives.

Beyond leisure, the vacation allowed for personal growth. I pursued hobbies I had set aside during the academic year, from painting to playing musical instruments. I also volunteered with a local community organization, an experience that not only gave me a sense of purpose but also introduced me to remarkable individuals and stories.

As the vacation drew to a close, a sense of nostalgia settled in. The days had flown by, leaving behind memories etched in the sands of time. The journey, both physical and introspective, had transformed me. I returned with a newfound appreciation for the beauty of the world, the importance of relationships, and the significance of taking breaks to recharge.

A summer vacation is more than just a break from school; it’s a transformative experience that encompasses relaxation, exploration, and growth. It’s a canvas upon which we paint our memories, our passions, and our connections. As I stepped back into the world of academics, I carried with me the lessons and experiences of this summer, poised to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

How to Write an Essay on How You Spent Your Summer Vacation

Last Updated: January 4, 2020

This article was co-authored by Alexander Peterman, MA . Alexander Peterman is a Private Tutor in Florida. He received his MA in Education from the University of Florida in 2017. This article has been viewed 52,406 times.

Writing an essay on how you spent your summer vacation is a classic way of starting a new school year. Think about this essay as an opportunity to tell a story about your summer while reflecting on the experiences you had. Choose a memorable moment you had this summer and start crafting your essay, giving as many details as possible.

Choosing a Topic

Step 1 Look back on mementos you kept from the summer.

  • These can also make nice visual aids if you are asked to present your essay.

Step 2 Make a list of the things you’ve done over summer vacation.

  • A list might be full of things like babysitting, attending a camp, working at a local store, taking a road trip, etc. This type of brainstorming can help you pick major events and other important moments from your summer.

Step 3 Write about a memorable moment.

  • For example, maybe you spent your summer traveling around Japan. Think of a memorable moment you had while traveling — maybe you walked up a mountain in the pouring rain — and write about this moment, adding lots of details.

Step 4 Create an outline...

  • For example, if you're writing about spending time at the beach, your outline could remind you to talk about the sandcastle building contest you entered, the dolphins you saw, and the ice cream you ate every day.
  • Details might be what the other sandcastles looked like, how far away the dolphins were, and what kind of toppings were on your ice cream.
  • Your outline is just to help you organize your thoughts — it can be written by hand or typed.

Crafting the Essay

Step 1 Focus on your feelings, interactions, and thoughts.

  • Instead of saying that you worked in a pet store, ate a PB&J sandwich, and walked home every day, talk about more than just your actions. You could talk about which pets are your favorites to work with, how it felt to eat the same sandwich every day, or what you thought about on your walk home.

Step 2 Use your 5 senses to explain your experiences.

  • Using sensory details like these will help your readers visualize and engage with your writing. These help your audience make your experiences feel real to them, even though they weren't there.

Step 3 Describe activities you did in each place you went.

  • For example, instead of saying “I went to the beach this summer,” try saying “I spent my summer swimming in the frigid water at Virginia Beach.” The more details you can provide, the more engaged your reader will be.

Step 4 Choose precise, descriptive adjectives.

  • Instead of saying “the burger was really good,” you could say, “the burger was juicy and filling.”

Step 5 Revise and edit your essay carefully.

  • Don't just rely on spellcheck. It will help catch some errors, but it will miss some things, too.
  • Ask a parent or other adult to read over your essay too, if you'd like.
  • Setting your essay aside for a little while will give you a fresher perspective when you go back to revise it.

Structuring Your Essay

Step 1 Start with a strong introduction.

  • Make sure your conclusion doesn’t just copy the introduction.

My Experience With Summer Vacation

My summer holidays began on the first day, and I quickly became bored, mainly because every single one of my friends had left for elsewhere. Because of this, my parents decided to enrol me in a summer camp. My parents helped me enrol in one that our school was holding on its own.

I initially believed it would be useless and equally dull. To my amazement, I was mistaken. One of my favourite life experiences was summer camp. I had the opportunity to participate in various activities, and it was around this time that I first realised I had a gift for painting.

Despite there being no school, we rose early at 7 a.m. Every day, our trainers would teach us something new. I learned karate on the first day, which was entertaining and beneficial. In addition, I developed my skills in volleyball, table tennis, and basketball. My most anticipated portion finally arrived.

We learned how to paint and were taught unique techniques for mastering this art. I picked it up quickly and began to like painting. I will always be grateful to this summer camp for sparking my interest in painting and other activities.

Because it allows them to unwind and spend time with their loved ones doing activities they enjoy, many individuals look forward to the summer. For relaxation and amusement, many people take summer off from work. All institutions and schools are closed for the summer due to the heat. While some people would rather spend their entire day indoors, others would rather spend time outside. For kids, summer vacation could be a particularly memorable time of year.

Essay on How I Spent My Summer Vacation

The school session begins in March. It also earmarks the end of the spring season. As time passes, we enter the summer season in the next few months. The advent of summer brings hot days and a humid climate. It is really hard for the students to continue school in the scorching heat. Everyone seems to be exhausted due to hot summer days. It is then the school declares summer holidays so that the students and their parents can relax for a few days. Summer vacation is the time of happiness for students as their families plan a trip to a hill station to get rid of the heat.

India is a tropical country that suffers from extreme heat and humidity during March, April, May, and mid of June. The temperature ranges from 32 to 40°C in some states falling in the tropical region. Before the rainy season starts, the scorching sun exhausts everyone. Every day becomes unbearable to go out and meet with the responsibilities. This is why a summer vacation is so important for all family members. We decided to go to Sikkim, one of the best northeastern states in India as a getaway from the summer days.

Sikkim welcomed us with a soothing cool atmosphere. We breathed fresh air after a long time and felt rejuvenated on the very first hour in Gangtok. The place is situated amidst the lower ranges of the Himalaya. The small clouds were hiding the sunrays and gave us the best feel we waited for an entire year. My father booked a hotel with an excellent view. We received a warm welcome from the management and got our rooms to stay in. On that very day, we started to scout the different locations of the capital city.

The next day, we started unwinding our stressful life. We went to Yumthang, a serene valley known for flowers and yaks grazing on the meadows. The best time to visit this place is in March-April. Teesta river flows amidst this valley providing an excellent view. The panoramic view is adorned with snow-capped mountains and green flora. It was then I realized how beautiful Mother Earth can be. This valley is also known as the Valley of Flowers. Rhododendron puts a new colour to this heavenly place.

The next day we proceeded to Tsomgo Lake. It is one of the best glacial lakes in India that provides a beautiful scene. The entire place is covered with snow at a height of 12,400 feet above sea level. The winding roads with hairpin turns took us to this place. The journey was fascinating as we travelled on a car crossing one mountain after the other. The lake was calm and quiet with many people present in the location. We also took photos while riding yaks.

Our next destination was Zero Point. It is locally known as Yume Samdong. Located at a height of 15,300 feet above the sea level, this is the last place where people dwell. Beyond this point, there are no roads. It is a valley surrounded by mountains where three rivers meet. The snow here is quite deep. We had difficulty breathing in this place due to its height and lack of oxygen but it passed within a few minutes. It is true that this place resembles the beauty of Switzerland. This is where we enjoyed a lot on the vast snow-capped valley. We made snowballs and threw them.

It was a brilliant adventure. The journey was quite rejuvenating and refreshing for all the family members. We felt sad while returning from Sikkim. I will wait for the next summer vacation to visit this state again.

How to Write a Summer Vacation Essay

Summer break is a great time to kick back, relax and enjoy yourself and, if you’re lucky, to go on an awesome trip! But how can you translate your amazing vacation into a narrative essay for English class or work it to fit a common application prompt? Here’s some tips to help you out:

Save Mementos From Your Summer

Even if you’re not the sentimental type, make sure to document your summer travels. Take pictures, write diary entries, save train stubs. This is the best way to ensure that you’ll remember your summer well enough to look back and write about it later.

Write an Outline Before Writing Your Essay

Regardless of whether you spent your summer break in Madison, Wisconsin or Madrid, Spain, you should plan out what you’re going to write before diving in. Make a list of what you’ve done over the summer so that you can later narrow down a focus for the essay itself. Keep in mind that the best essay topics aren’t always on the most exciting activities an essay about getting stuck in traffic on the way to the airport on the way to Denver could work better than an essay on hiking the Grand Canyon and looking out at the incredible view.

Be Specific

Since you’re going to keep a record of your trip and come up with an outline before writing your essay, you should be able to put some detail into your essay. Be as specific as possible when it comes to your word choice. If you’re talking about some gelato that you ate in Italy, don’t say that it was “delicious.” Instead, say that it was “creamy and chocolatey, with a note of vanilla.”

Focus on Feelings About Your Trip, Not What You Did

If you spent the summer on the beach in Cape Cod, you shouldn’t write about what you did. You should write instead about how you felt while there. An essay that reads “I went to beach, then had lobster for dinner” is not quite as exciting as one that goes, “As I went for a walk on the beach, I thought about how lucky I was to be able to enjoy nature.” Feelings translate better into text than events, and you should try to place those feelings into context.

Stick to Writing About a Small Moment

With any essay you write especially a short one it’s important to focus a narrow moment in time. Don’t write about your entire week in Paris. Instead, write about the moment you got lost in the city at midnight and fumbled your way home in the dark. You don’t have to pick a particularly glamorous moment from your trip, but you should pick one that meant something to you.

Edit Your Essay Carefully

The shorter the essay, the more important precision is. Regardless of length, make sure to carefully read over what you’ve written to make sure every sentence conveys the message you most want displayed. The editing process matters just as much as the writing process, even if it seems less so.

BALTIC 111 RAVEN IN A CLASS OF HER OWN AS SHE IS PREPARED FOR LAUNCHING

10 july 2023.

When her owner commissioned this Baltic 111 Custom foil-assisted superyacht, weight control was paramount. Baltic Yachts was selected for its forensic approach to lightweight advanced composite construction and unique ability to combine it with an unmatched custom finish

Baltic Yachts has successfully moved the Baltic 111 Raven from her building facility at the company’s waterside premises in Jakobstad, Finland to reveal one of the most extreme yachts it has ever built.

Broadly described as a 111ft foil-assisted, ultra-lightweight superyacht, she will be used primarily for day sailing, but also undertake high-speed, long-distance passages. Not easy to categorise, this extraordinary yacht can be placed firmly in a class of her own.

Baltic Yachts was chosen to meet this challenge because of its unmatched reputation for building advanced composite superyachts to the very highest standards, including its forensic examination of systems and components throughout the build process. Add to that the company’s ability to finish yachts to a level of luxury second to none and the decision to build in Jakobstad was straightforward.

Raven’s experienced owner’s project manager, Garth Brewer of A2B Marine Projects, said: “Raven doesn’t fall easily into a category, but if I had to place her, I’d say she’s the equivalent of a high-end Super-car. The boat is primarily for pure enjoyment and the owner likes the challenge of doing something that hasn’t been done before.”

“He really understands the technical elements and this will be a development project which will require a measured approach,” added Brewer, who emphasised the need for incremental steps in Raven’s trials, building confidence and understanding over time as the boat reaches her peak performance.

Raven does, however, possess some distinctive features which provide more than a hint of how she might perform. They include two large T-shaped hydrofoils mounted on hydraulically controlled side-arms capable of supporting some of the boat’s displacement.

At her transom, Raven will be equipped with vertical Interceptor trim tabs to adjust fore and aft trim at speed and there is movable water ballast, carried in built-in tanks in the aft quarters to boost the righting moment required while sailing.

Designed to sail partly on her leeward chine, Raven will derive her stability and lift, while sailing, from her foils, leaving her 9.3-ton fixed keel bulb and precision-engineered 5m long fin to provide basic stability. It’s also the location for a fully submerged intake for cooling water and is designed with a sacrificial zone to absorb impact in the event of a collision.

Ultra-lightweight interior

Not only is Raven’s foil-assisted ability likely to deliver a phenomenal sailing performance, she is also the subject of a highly unusual study in ultra-lightweight interior design, combining the yacht’s complex all carbon construction with styling which pays homage to Baltic Yachts’ rigorous programme of weight saving. Target displacement is 55 tons – just as a comparison, the recently launched, Baltic 110 Zemi displaces 95 tons.

Jarkko Jämsén, the Finnish concept designer who developed Raven with her owner and is responsible for the yacht’s extraordinary styling, explained that they were keen to combine the need for weight saving with the opportunity to expose the remarkable carbon structure of the yacht to create a unique interior design aesthetic.

baltic yachts catamaran

Normally, part of a superyacht’s accommodation might be mocked-up to make every effort to get the detail right, but in Raven’s case the entire boat was checked out in a 1:1 mock-up

A key part of Baltic’s effort in the Raven project has been directed at weight saving and control. Apart from using the lightest possible carbon/Nomex combinations in the yacht’s main structures, every item, down to the last pipe clip, nut and bolt, has been assessed. The naval architects and structural engineers behind her are Botin Partners and PURE Design respectively, both at the leading edge of America’s Cup design.

“This project undoubtedly represents one of the biggest challenges Baltic Yachts has ever embraced,” said Baltic Yachts Executive Vice President, Henry Hawkins. “But that is what we do – we have a long history of bringing leading edge innovation to the fore. We are surrounded and supported by a dedicated team who are led by Garth Brewer, who oversaw Visione’s construction here at Baltic 21 years ago and still keeps her on the pace.”

Experience to take on the challenge

Jarkko Jämsén emphasised the importance of choosing Baltic Yachts to build Raven. “The company was selected because we believe it has the courage, experience and track record to take on the challenge. Calculating weight and Baltic’s well-known ability to hit displacement targets were critical.”

baltic yachts catamaran

Baltic Yachts was chosen for its proven ability to build to the finest tolerances using carbon composites and in Raven’s case much of the immaculate hull and deck structure will be exposed as part of the interior styling and décor

For Sam Evans, project manager, and Mattias Svenlin, project co-ordinator for Raven, the challenge was to construct a superyacht much lighter than anything previously built by Baltic – yachts that were already considered light in the sphere of Superyachting. “Mattias’ experience, creativity and flexibility, supported by a dedicated production team combined with Sam’s communication skills, have been key factors in the overall success of the build,” added Garth Brewer.

Taking weight saving to another level

“This is another level entirely in terms of weight saving,” said Mattias. To ensure as fair a hull finish as possible, a carbon mould was preferred to reduce excessive heat differences and thus distortion in the curing process. “We re-assessed the hull coating schedule to reduce weight using light primers and filler instead of Ultra-Build to reach the acceptable industry standards – in effect coatings do the job of filler,” he said. Using this technique in a superyacht is unprecedented.

baltic yachts catamaran

The shape of Raven’s hull and deck were created by a precision engineered wooden ‘tool’ from which carbon moulds were created, in turn producing the split hull and deck components. Unusually the moulds were made in carbon to eliminate heat differentials, distortion and reduce fairing to an absolute minimum

baltic yachts catamaran

The all carbon/Nomex hull being prepared for coating. Note the pronounced chine and side arm apertures indicating the position of the hydraulically operated, T-shaped hydrofoils. There’s less than a metre difference between the yacht’s hull length and waterline length

Hull and deck construction use carbon IM fibre pre-preg, employing the highest quality fibres on the market, and a Kevlar honeycomb sandwich throughout.  The owner has accepted that sailing Raven at speed will be noisy so the elimination of any attempt to sound deaden represents a huge weight saving. “But we have created an interior finish with special surfaces affecting the acoustics to ‘soften’ the noise a little,” said Mattias.  He pointed out, however, that all the adhesives suitable for bonding this material to bulkheads were compared for weight, the final choice resulting in a saving of 6kg. In terms of the Raven project that’s a big number.

baltic yachts catamaran

To reduce weight, almost no sound deadening material has been used, although a lightweight foam acoustic material has been applied to some bulkheads to take the edge of what will be a noisy yacht when she is sailing at speed. Carbon tubular frameworks and ratan are used extensively for deck head ‘panelling’ and furniture structures

100 grams off every bracket

Baltic Yachts has revisited all weight saving opportunities shaving 100 grams off every carbon pipe bracket, making carbon cable trays even lighter and switching out steel hydraulic pipework for lighter hosing which has saved 160kg. “We’ve even reduced the weight of the shower door from 13.5kg per m² to just 2.3kg m²,” said Mattias.

Even as Raven neared completion, the Baltic build team were continuing to identify weight saving opportunities including replacing the metal clips holding the lightweight carbon tubular accommodation framework in place. “Östen Sundelin, one of the team, reckoned we could 3D print them in a far lighter material so we went ahead and made that saving,” said Mattias. In-house 3D printing is increasingly used at Baltic to fashion custom items to save weight and optimise design, the complex titanium head of the yacht’s retractable propulsion system (RPS) mechanism being a case in point.

Study in lightweight interior design

Raven’s interior, conceptualised by Jarkko Jämsén, is unusually comprehensive for a high-performance superyacht of this type, but the use of ultra-lightweight rattan deck-heads and bulkhead finishes, exposed carbon and a lack of coatings helps keep weight down along with Nomex cores in structural bulkheads. All the frameworks for the furniture, for example, are made from hollow carbon piping, its light weight combining with a modern take on style guaranteed to turn heads.

baltic yachts catamaran

Lightweight, but stunningly stylish, part of the forward saloon area with its carbon custom control centre seat, lightweight ratan deck heads and a glimpse of the ‘bird’s nest’ cockpit structure, top right

baltic yachts catamaran

The focal point of the accommodation is centred around the glazed sides of the large cockpit, dubbed the ‘bird’s nest’, which forms a type of inverted observation ‘dome’ allowing occupants to view the carbon dominated accommodation. The glazing is in fact Perspex, which is considerably lighter than toughened glass, representing an overall saving of 250kg. It is reinforced with a criss-cross pattern of carbon mullions which gave it its bird’s nest description. Further weight saving is achieved by minimising the amount of caulking between each pane replacing some of it with a foam fillet.

On deck, attention is immediately drawn to the cockpit because, apart from its aforementioned aesthetics, it also converts to a semi-covered, hardtop protected seating area. The forward section of the cockpit hinges up and aft in ‘clam-shell’ style to affect this unique conversion.

Perspex is also used in numerous deck prisms which still use a centuries old design to efficiently illuminate the accommodation with natural light, but are vastly lighter by replacing bronze and glass with carbon and Perspex.

baltic yachts catamaran

Raven’s dramatic bird’s nest cockpit structure forms a unique two-way observation ‘dome’. It is constructed of carbon composite mullions hand painted by a local artisan in Jakobstad to resemble timber. Glazing will be Perspex set in a lightweight caulking composite

Spacious saloons are located fore and aft of the bird’s nest, the forward one laid out with a galley and dining areas and the aft space dedicated to the owner’s sleeping accommodation, with a large double centreline berth folding up against an interior bulkhead when the yacht is in performance mode. There’s also a passage berth or sea cabin to starboard.

It is not often one can describe a head and shower compartment as a work of art, but in Raven’s case numerous hydraulic rams mounted inside some of the complex carbon reinforcement, including the A frame taking the load of the deck stepped mast, have been exposed by inserting Perspex inspection covers. So, you can take a shower while watching the upper and lower deflector rams in action or the downhaul ram for the 7m long reaching strut, which is used to optimise headsail sheet leads!

Further weight saving has been achieved by modifying a custom bamboo seat in one of the shower/head compartments with carbon tubing made to look like bamboo, complete with its characteristic rings and a remarkably realistic painted finish.

baltic yachts catamaran

Bamboo, but not as we know it. To reduce weight even further and resist splitting, the ‘bamboo’ used to construct an unusual seat in the shower compartment is, in fact, carbon moulded and painted to look like the real thing

The aft section of the yacht is largely empty, but forward there’s accommodation for four guests in two cabins and extensive crew accommodation including a captain’s cabin.

Powering Raven

For propulsion and generating, the design team settled on a diesel electric hybrid system for lower emissions and efficient weight distribution. It’s a solution Baltic Yachts has been perfecting for a number of years. A Swiss 130kW Phi-Power AG electric propulsion motor is located just aft of amidships and twin 80kW Yanmar generators, optimised to save weight, located further aft. These charge two battery banks which power the main propulsion motor, hydraulic pumps and accommodation services. The drive train is completed by a retractable propeller designed with carbon blades and a titanium hub.

Stand by for performance!

Her rig and sailplan are relatively conventional for a performance maxi, with a Southern Spars carbon spar and a North Sails 3Di upwind wardrobe using Helix structured luff technology. A variety of Code and asymmetric sails can be set off her 8m long bowsprit.

Something Raven’s design engineers and Baltic had to pay particular attention to was the yacht’s almost full beam mainsail sheet track. Because Raven will be developing so much apparent wind, she’ll be sailing most of the time with a wind angle well forward of the beam. So, like a multihull, the main is likely to be almost permanently sheeted home while trim adjustments are made by moving the mainsheet car along its track.

With a beam of over 7.4m and her accentuated hull chine, ‘driving’ Raven will feel more like sailing a multihull than a monohull and appropriate trimming and handling techniques will be needed to extract her full potential.

Initial trials off Jakobstad will see Raven sailing minus her foils. These will then be fitted, further trials in Finland will take place and following delivery she will leave for a destination providing the conditions in which she can be worked up steadily as her potential is realised.

It’s going to take time for Raven to seriously spread her wings, but when that moment comes it will have been worth waiting for – stand by for performance!

First teased in November 2022, the Baltic 80 Custom is billed as a multi-purpose sailing yacht capable of both offshore cruising and fast sprints on the race course. The bespoke vessel was commissioned by an experienced owner seeking an 80-footer with excellent handling. As such, the newcomer features a self-tacking jib set on a wide track that makes it easy to sail. The rig design has yet to be confirmed, but the yacht will be fitted with an in-boom furling system.

About Argentina

Why is Baltic Sea a good sailing destination?

The Baltic Sea is a treasure trove of sailing experiences. Encompassing Northern Europe, it’s bounded by diverse coastlines, from the majestic fjords of Norway to the richly historical ports of Germany and Poland, and the captivating archipelagos of Sweden and Finland.

One of the highlights of the Baltic Sea is its distinct sailing seasons. Spring and summer offer longer daylight hours, allowing more time to explore and navigate, while autumn offers a tranquil and serene sailing atmosphere. What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Baltic Sea

Sailing boats capture the essence of traditional seafaring. Perfect for harnessing the Baltic Sea’s gentle breezes, they offer an unmatched feeling of connection to the water and a thrilling sailing experience. Sailing boats are ideal for those who enjoy the art of sailing and are comfortable with the gentle lean when tacking and jibing.

Conversely, catamarans, with their dual-hull design, offer a platform of stability and ample space. They’re excellent for larger groups or families, ensuring a smooth and comfortable voyage. Their shallow draft also allows access to shallow water areas, perfect for exploring the Baltic’s numerous coves and inlets.

At Yachting.Rent, we offer a vast selection of both sailing boats and catamarans, each impeccably maintained and equipped with all the necessary amenities for a safe and memorable voyage. Our team is here to guide you in selecting the vessel that aligns with your preferences and sailing capabilities.

Whether you’re seeking the traditional excitement of a sailing boat or the stability and comfort of a catamaran, Yachting.Rent is committed to delivering an unforgettable Baltic Sea sailing experience. Let us aid you in choosing the perfect vessel for your journey across the captivating waters of the Baltic Sea. Set sail with us and immerse yourself in a world of nautical adventure.

Discover the best Baltic sailing routes: from Scandinavia to hidden eastern gems

Yachting World

  • February 1, 2023

From popular Scandinavian waters, to off-the-beaten-track eastern gems, Wietze van der Laan and Janneke Kuysters share six great Baltic sailing routes

baltic yachts catamaran

The Baltic is one of the best cruising grounds in Europe, with a myriad of options to choose from. But how can you make the most of sailing the Baltic – and, for non-Schengen passport holders, what can be done in 90 days?

Between late June and mid August the Scandinavian summer can be seriously warm with temperatures around 25°C-30°C. There’ll be the occasional rainy or (very) windy day, but in general the forecast is very accurate. Sweden, Norway and Finland broadcast good forecasts for the whole Baltic, and we also found the ECMWF model (through the Windy app) very accurate.

Stable weather

Prevailing winds are from the west or south-west, fuelled by a train of lows coming from the Atlantic. However, in summer a stable high pressure area forms over Scandinavia, bringing beautiful weather and moderate to light easterly winds. Make sure you have enough fuel or a large light-weather sail for these conditions.

Distances between destinations are never very far. For cruisers who don’t fancy sailing through the night, there are 20-22 hours of daylight in midsummer, giving you a wider choice of destinations to sail to. The lack of tide adds to this flexibility.

Midsummer is celebrated everywhere with food, drink, festivities and a well-decorated maypole. In the shoulder seasons it is a bit chillier, especially in the evenings. Before midsummer and after 1 August restaurants, tourist offices and attractions decrease their opening hours. The upside is that it gets quieter and easier to find a space in the popular harbours and anchorages.

Northern Baltic shores are strewn with rocks, the southern shores are sandy and shallow. Everything is well surveyed and navigation is simple if your charts are up to date and you use common sense and caution.

There’s an abundance of cruising guides detailing every anchorage and bay with the rocks marked on aerial photos – they’re worth every penny. Markers and buoys are plentiful, sometimes to an almost confusing degree.

Mooring options when sailing the Baltic

There are lots of marinas and public jetties, and average berthing fees are around €30 for a 44ft yacht. Most have an intricate system for mooring. Parallel to the jetty there is a line of mooring balls. You pick up one of these, secure a line and then motor towards the jetty to attach two lines. There are no cleats on the jetty, but rings.

Most Scandinavian boats have fancy ladders ready at the bow to make this manoeuvre easier. Yachts with centre cockpits or wide sterns tend to motor with the stern to the jetty. In Denmark, mooring is done between poles.

But the best thing is just to anchor in one of the thousands of bays in the archipelagos. Free anchoring can be limited due to the size of the bay, so a stern anchor comes in handy. Drop it over the stern when approaching a good-sized rock. Slowly advance to the rock and tie the boat to a tree, to a ring in the rock or to another rock.

Done with caution, this is an excellent way to spend a lovely summer evening.

Swedish West Coast

Technically, the Swedish west coast – and the country road to the east – is not the Baltic, but Skagerrak and Kattegat (Kattegat is a Dutch expression for ‘narrow entrance’). The west coast of Sweden is a great landing place after a North Sea crossing .

The island of Orust has many well known boatyards on it, and towns like Fjällbacka, Marstrand and Gothenburg are all worth a visit. Marstrand is the epicentre of regattas on the west coast, and foreign competitors will find a warm welcome.

From Gothenburg, there are two options: one is to continue south and wind your way in between the thousands of islands and rocks. Here there are many picturesque small towns to visit, but also contemporary Malmö with a marina right in the centre of town (Denmark is only a stone’s throw away, though we’ll get to that later). The other option is to take the Göta channel straight through Sweden.

You start in Gothenburg on the Trollhättan canal which is 40 miles long. In six large locks, you go up to 42m above sea level and exit the Trolhättan channel in the Vänern lake. You could spend weeks here exploring this very large lake (55 miles by 45 miles), anchoring in little bays and exploring the beautiful castles and little towns on the shore.

baltic yachts catamaran

In Sjötorp, the fun really starts: you enter the first of 58 historic locks and climb to 92m above sea level. In Motala on lake Vättern there is a museum about the canal. The figures are mindblowing: it took 22 years to build, is 95 miles long and it took 58,000 conscripted soldiers to dig it with spades.

The reason behind this mammoth project, which started in 1810, was to cut down the travelling time between Stockholm and Gothenburg. Over land, it took up to two weeks. By boat through the channel, it could be done in less than a week. Traditional passenger boats still ply the channel, but the majority of the users are recreational craft.

From Sjötorp to Söderköping you travel in between locks on a small canal, fringed by fields of yellow flowers, farms painted the typical Scandinavian red, cattle and lots of cyclists. Life is easy and time goes slowly.

Traditionally, at every lock there is a lock keeper’s house in a distinct light yellow colour, and some of these cute dwellings are now ice cream shops, coffee bars and restaurants. Particularly near locks that are a little more complicated, holiday crowds often gather to watch the activity on the yachts; the Göta channel is nicknamed ‘the Divorce Ditch’, because for a short-handed crew it requires a bit of agility to tackle the locks.

When the last lock closes behind you in Mem, a whole new cruising ground opens.

Stockholm archipelago

The Stockholm archipelago is a favourite among all Swedish sailors, thanks to its thousands of islands and anchorages. The weather here is usually calm, which, combined with the small tidal range and hardly any current, makes for an excellent cruising ground.

Many foreign yacht owners store their boats on the Swedish east coast in winter to get the most out of the summer season.

There are endless cruising options up and down the coast. You can take it easy on short day trips, anchoring or mooring to a rock, visiting small towns to provision and walking the hundreds of kilometres of footpaths that run along the shore. You can also opt to do a circular route: north along the coast, then inland to Södertälje. From there you pass through a lock and enter Lake Mälar.

baltic yachts catamaran

Stockholm is built on a series of islands. Photo: Wietze Van Der Laan

Mälar is a large lake but a relatively unknown cruising ground with lots of lovely anchorages underneath the ancient castles and homesteads that line the shores. The water is clear and it’s a joy to have a swim on a hot day. You could easily spend two weeks here.

From Lake Mälar you sail to Stockholm, the bustling capital of Sweden. The city is built on islands, hence the nickname ‘Venice of the North’. There is lots of traffic: ferries large and small, cargo ships, pleasure craft. Even food deliveries are done by boat.

The old city centre, or Gamle Stan, is a pleasure to stroll through, while the Vasa museum is mindblowing. The King’s ship Vasa was launched in 1628 but sank within three miles in the harbour of Stockholm. For over 300 years it lay in the mud, only to be lifted to the surface in 1961, perfectly preserved.

From Stockholm you can go back to the south of the archipelago, or why not go north? You can sail straight up into the Gulf of Bothnia where only a few foreign boats sail each year. To the east there is another major cruising ground, while the island Arholma has two perfect anchorages to stop and consider both options.

baltic yachts catamaran

Åland and Finnish archipelago

The Åland archipelago is an autonomous region within Finland with its own legislation, and Swedish is the first language spoken there. The Ålanders are very well connected to both mainlands: ferries go back and forth between the capital Mariehamn and both Stockholm and Helsinki. The archipelago’s pink rocks give the landscape a special charm, especially at sunset and sunrise – though you’d need to be up all night to see that in high summer, as there are only two hours of darkness. Ålanders also love good food.

Mariehamn has good facilities for visiting yachts: two large marinas, of which the ÅSS harbour is most suited for international visitors. You’re in Finland, so the sauna is included in your marina fee (and is a great place to hear the latest information on the best anchorages and other cruising gossip).

One of the joys of the Åland archipelago is that you can sail right around the main islands, either on a northerly or southerly circuit. The loop will bring you back to Mariehamn in 7-10 days of pleasant day sails. If you choose to go east, some of the more remote islands are worth a stop. Finnish Utö is one, the southernmost island of the archipelago and dominated by a large lighthouse. Only a handful of people live on the island and visitors are very welcome.

Once again, it’s hard to choose your next destination. The prevailing westerly winds will blow you nicely to the east, but you need to keep an eye on the lows that pass this area regularly and cause a stiff northerly breeze. Choose anchorages with that in mind.

baltic yachts catamaran

Typical mooring arrangement in Scandinavia: a stern anchor and bow to the rocks. Note the small bow ladders. Photo: Wietze Van Der Laan

The Finnish archipelago spans the whole south-west coast of Finland. You can meander through the islands and head northeast to Turku, a large town with all the facilities you need. Or sail a more south-easterly course and wind your way to Helsinki. Among lovely examples of islands are Bodö and Örö. Both were of military importance at one point in history and have been largely uninhabited, so nature has been able to flourish.

Two couples now lease the islands and are developing them in a very sustainable way, making them a true delight to visit with endless walks on well-marked paths, and the chance to enjoy sundowners on a wooden deck overlooking the small jetties lined with yachts, and excellent food in the small restaurants.

Well-known Finnish cruiser, Auli Irjala, says: “My partner and I have sailed around the world and have seen many beautiful places. Despite that, the Finnish archipelago is still very high on our list of favourite places. You can spend long summer days pottering around the islands for weeks on end. Sitting on a rock that still has the warmth of the sun in it and just soaking up the view, while your boat is moored alongside that same rock in calm water.”

baltic yachts catamaran

If you aim to do a Baltic circuit, you’ll at some point sail to Helsinki. The historic resort of Hanko on the south side of the city is a must-see. Hanko is a yachting hub, and an overnighter will get you from Hanko to Helsinki. By going slower you can take several ‘inside tracks’ that’ll see you meandering between beautiful wooded islands and rugged rocky shores.

Entering Helsinki is an experience in itself: the many rocks and islands that surround the city require careful navigation, especially because large cargo ships and ferries head into Helsinki at full speed.

The large fortress island of Suomenlinna is an impressive sight; it also has a small marina. In the vibrant city of Helsinki itself there are also lots of options to moor, and the Nyländska Jaktklubben yacht club on the island Valkosaari is well worth a visit. You can spend days exploring Helsinki, but just across the Gulf of Finland is a relatively unknown cruising area which begs to be explored…

baltic yachts catamaran

Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania

Up until 1991 Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were occupied by Russia. The ‘singing revolution’ was impressive: without a shot being fired, the three countries gained their independence. During Soviet times citizens were forbidden to have boats and it was not allowed to live near the coast. Many guard towers and navy harbours made sure that nobody would escape to Finland or Sweden.

Fast forward 30 years, and when you cross from Helsinki, you’ll see many new yachts proudly flying the Estonian flag. There is a luxury marina right in the middle of the capital, Tallinn, from where you can walk into the historic old town. Facilities for yachts have been developed at a breathtaking speed – Estonians love to be out on the water.

To cruise Estonia, one option is to follow the coast of the mainland all the way to the ‘summer capital’ Pärnu. Along the coast, there are interesting places to visit. Haapsalu is one: a fortress towers over the small town. Spas are all along this coast, as the mud in this part of the Baltic is said to be healing for body and mind.

baltic yachts catamaran

You can sail back to Tallinn via the Estonian islands: Kihnu with its ancient matriarchal culture, Muhu, Saaremaa and Hiiumaa with their historic castles and mystical forests. Facilities for yachts are all new, usually small harbours, often near ferry landings. They all have floating jetties, shower blocks and friendly harbour masters.

Further south is the Gulf of Riga: a vast body of water where the prevailing winds are from the south-west in summer. Most cruisers opt not to sail to the capital, Riga, from Estonia because it’s a 70-mile upwind slog, though we were lucky and had westerly winds.

The inner city is about seven miles up the Daugava river, with several marinas on the coast and up-river (the one nearest the city centre is basic but within walking distance of the key sights). Sailing to Riga is well worth the effort to wander around the cobbled streets of the historic city centre.

On the west coast of Latvia there are a few harbours with facilities for yachts. You could sail to Lithuania on day trips, but a keen eye on the weather is necessary. With the prevailing south-westerly winds, this coast is a lee shore and the shallow foreshore can create steep waves which may lock you into a harbour for longer than you’d like. Ventspils is the most popular harbour and an attractive holiday town.

baltic yachts catamaran

The harbour at Klaipeda in Lithuania. Photo: Wietze Van Der Laan

Further south is the Lithuanian harbour of Klaipeda, which gives access to the Kurisches Haff, a freshwater lagoon. A long, narrow sand spit of very high sand dunes runs from Klaipeda all the way to Kaliningrad (a Russian exclave). From Klaipeda, there’s a marked channel on the east side of the spit. Well sheltered from the prevailing winds it’s a truly ‘off the beaten track’ destination. From Klaipeda to Gdansk in Poland can be sailed in an overnighter, taking special care to avoid Kaliningrad’s 12-mile exclusion zone (now enforced by the Russian navy).

Poland and northern Germany

The jewel in the crown of sailing in Poland is Gdansk. You can sail there from the north of Germany, or cross to Gdansk from Latvia or Lithuania. Either way, with the prevailing south-westerly winds, it takes an effort to get there and back.

But it is worth it. Right in the city centre of Gdansk is an excellent marina. Gdansk is intriguing, because of its complex history. There are excellent museums and city walks that unravel the mystery for the curious visitor.

baltic yachts catamaran

Aerial view of the old town of Gdansk in Poland. Photo: Fotoman/Kharkov/Getty

Sailing is also a popular activity in Poland, so it is relatively easy to find parts or get repairs done. Cruising the Martwa Wisla river you’ll pass shipyards on a massive scale, one of the mainstays of the Gdansk economy.

Going west from Gdansk you can make day sails to small harbours along the holiday towns that dot the coast of Poland, keeping a keen eye out for low pressure systems that bring temporary strong northerly winds. If you’re lucky, a high pressure area will establish itself and bring light easterlies. In summer the active sailing community in Poland creates a fun atmosphere, and foreign yachts are given a warm welcome.

From the Polish north shores you sail west to Vorpommern, a coastal region with interesting topography due to its high sand dunes and large, narrow spits that enclose vast bodies of water – especially fun to explore with a shallow draught yacht.

At the border of Poland and Germany, you can tuck ‘inside’ the spits, between the islands of Wolin and Usedom. The natural channels and shallow enclosed ‘Haffs’ make for excellent and very sheltered cruising areas with many quaint little towns to visit.

In case of strong south-westerly winds, this can be a good area to keep sailing while still making your way west. The Boddengewässer lagoons lead all the way south of Rügen to Heiligenhafen, on the west side of the island of Fehman.

If you fancy an easier tack offshore with a deeper draught boat, you could sail from Gdansk to Bornholm or Christiansö in Denmark’s Ertholmene mini-archipelago.

baltic yachts catamaran

Nyhavn in Copenhagen, nicknamed Little Amsterdam. Photo: Wietze Van Der Laan

Denmark – and back

Getting to and from the Baltic depends on weather windows, and timing. There are three good options to choose. The first is to sail around the north of Denmark and via Skagerrak and Kattegat to the Baltic. The second option is to take the Lymfjord between Thyboron in the west and Hals in the east of Denmark.

The Lymfjord is a sheltered inland waterway with some little towns underway where you can moor and rest for the night. The third option is the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, nicknamed the Kiel Canal, which cuts through Germany’s Schleswig-Holstein region and connects to the North Sea. All three have their pros and cons, depending on the weather and the amount of motoring you’re prepared to do.

Inevitably, getting in or out of the Baltic means spending time in Denmark. Denmark, with its many islands large and small, is a cruising destination in itself and it would be a shame to rush through. There is something for everybody: secluded anchorages, impressive natural phenomena like the limestone cliffs of Mons Klimt, and the contemporary city of Copenhagen. The tidal range is slightly larger in Denmark, especially in the north.
