What are writing scholarships?

Writing scholarships are financial awards given to students based primarily on written work, though other factors are usually taken into consideration as well. Most writing scholarships involve a prompt or series of prompts to which applicants must respond. Some writing scholarships — especially those that award large amounts of money — require applicants to submit past writing samples, or even a full portfolio.

The good news is that, with so many writing scholarships to choose from, you don’t have to apply for any that are “out of your league.” Indeed, though most students have heard of writing scholarships, you may not realize just how many different varieties there are! Here are five of the most common types of writing scholarships, all of which you can find in this directory.

1. Personal essay scholarships

Personal essay scholarships involve writing on a topic related to your own experience. You’ll often see personal essay prompts like, “How have your experiences influenced your choice of major?” and “What are your career aspirations and how do you plan to achieve them?” Other prompts may ask you to write about a role model, a life-changing event, an aspect of your identity, etc. Suggested length is usually about 500-1,000 words, but varies depending on the level of detail requested and how many essay questions are provided.

Just about every scholarship these days has a personal essay component of some kind. This is because personal essay responses both demonstrate writing skills and give the judges a clear sense of each applicant’s goals. No one wants to throw away money on an aimless student — so if you’re applying for a personal essay scholarship, make sure to convey both your writing abilities and your ambitions in your work!

2. Critical essay scholarships

Critical essay scholarships are more in line with what students might consider  “academic” essays. The prompts typically ask applicants to analyze works of literature. However, unlike open-ended English class essays, most critical essay scholarships provide a very specific prompt (e.g. “Examine The Great Gatsby in the context of its World War II-era revival”).

Critical essay scholarships can also involve non-literary subject matter. Some may ask applicants to evaluate a historical event or figure; others may ask them to defend their stance on a political or legal issue. Though the line between critical and personal essays can sometimes blur, for the purposes of this directory, we define critical essays as those that use evidence from an external source to prove a point.

3. Short fiction scholarships

Short fiction scholarships include scholarships for short stories, one-act plays, poetry, and any other form of fiction that isn’t a novel or full-length script. Short fiction scholarships tend to be easier to find than long-form fiction scholarships, since most judging panels don’t have time to read more than a few thousand words per entry. Therefore, if you write fiction and you’re hoping to nab yourself a scholarship, this category is the way to go! (That said, if you’re a hardline novelist, some places will accept a sample chapter or two as short fiction entries.)

4. Journalism scholarships

Journalism scholarships are for students interested in pursuing a career in news, magazine, and/or online journalism. These scholarship applications almost always ask for writing samples to show the candidate’s interest. Depending on the organization, they may prefer topical news reports, informative articles, thinkpieces, or a mix. Some journalism scholarships provide a prompt and ask applicants to write a new article, but the focus is usually on samples. Speaking of which…

5. Portfolio scholarships 

Portfolio scholarships are the most rigorous kind of writing scholarship, requiring a substantial body of work from each applicant — usually 5-10 pieces of writing, if not more. The upside is that awards for portfolio scholarships tend to be pretty sizable, and may even cover your entire tuition!

If you decide to apply to a portfolio scholarship, make sure you have several strong pieces of work in your oeuvre, and consider writing a few new pieces as well. What you shouldn’t do is rush through a dozen new pieces to throw together as a portfolio. If you don’t have samples at the ready from previous assignments or projects, you’ll be better off applying to a less intensive writing scholarship.

Why apply to writing scholarships?

Applying to writing scholarships is a huge undertaking, especially if you’re pursuing multiple scholarships at once. It can sometimes feel like the effort isn’t worth it, or that you have little chance of actually winning any awards. But in truth, submitting to writing scholarships is one of the best investments you can make in your education, your creative writing skills, and your professional life.

Scholarships for larger amounts do attract more applicants, but that doesn’t mean they’re impossible to land — only that you have to work a little harder to stand out. And you can definitely sway the odds in your favor by applying to lots of small scholarships ($500 or less) for which you’ll have fewer competitors. Remember that every little bit helps! For example, if you plan on taking out student loans, even a $500 scholarship could save you much more in interest down the line.

Another compelling reason to apply to writing scholarships is that oftentimes, you’ve already done the work, or the work required is minimal. For scholarships that require writing samples, you’ll simply submit what you’ve already written in the past — and even for scholarships with specific prompts, you rarely have to write more than a couple of pages. If you were seriously committed, you could apply to a scholarship every day, spending a single concentrated evening on each application.

Jumping off that thought, as English majors love to say: the more writing scholarships you apply for, the better a writer you’ll become. Writing tons of scholarship essays will make you a much more creative and efficient writer. Not only will this help with your personal writing projects, but it will also be invaluable to your education and even your career! Writing is a crucial skill for every major — you’ll always have to write papers and emails to professors, after all — and even if you don’t plan to pursue a writing-based job, you'll still need writing skills to polish your résumé.

Finally, remember that there’s a writing scholarship out there for everyone, no matter what your interests or intended field. A good scholarship essay demonstrates the scholarship organization’s values while directly addressing the prompt. If you plan ahead , you can save time by writing one essay for multiple prompts with similar questions.

Scholarships are a type of student financial aid that don’t require repayment. They are awarded based on various factors, including academic merit, financial need, intended major, personal background, or activities and interests.

Like college applications, scholarship applications often require students to submit their grades, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, and an essay.

A scholarship essay shares your values and qualities in the context of a specific question, such as “How does technology affect your daily life?” or “Who has had the greatest impact on your life?”

Be wary of scholarship scams

While some applications may not require an essay, be wary of scholarship scams that do the following:

• Guarantee you scholarship money for a fee
• Claim scholarship information is exclusive to their company
• Ask for your bank or credit card information to hold the scholarship

Some legitimate companies do charge for releasing comprehensive scholarship lists or creating a tailored list of scholarship opportunities based on your profile.

However, you can always discover scholarship opportunities for free through your school counselor, community network, or an online search.

Many students focus on well-known, large scholarship opportunities, which are usually very competitive. To maximize your chance of success, invest time in applying for a wide variety of scholarships: national and local, as well as big and small award amounts. There are also scholarships for international students .

In addition to charitable foundation and corporate scholarships, you should consider applying for institutional scholarships at your prospective universities, which can award money based on your application’s strength, your financial situation, and your demonstrated interest in the school.

Check with your guidance counselor, local organizations, community network, or prospective schools’ financial aid offices for scholarship opportunities. It’s a good idea to start applying as early as your junior year and continue throughout your senior year.

Choose the right scholarships for you

Choose scholarships with missions and essay topics that match your background, experiences, and interests. If the scholarship topic is meaningful to you, it will be easier for you to write an authentic and compelling essay.

Don’t shy away from applying for local scholarships with small dollar amounts. Even a few hundred dollars can help you pay for books.

Local scholarships may be more tailored to your community, background, and activities, so they’re likely more relevant to you. Fewer students apply for these scholarships, so you have less competition and a higher chance of success.

Even if you’re adapting another essay, it’s important to make sure your essay directly addresses the prompt, stays within the word count limit , and demonstrates the organization’s values. The scholarship committee will be able to tell if you reuse an essay that doesn’t quite respond to the prompt, so be sure to tailor it to the questions asked.

Research each organization

Before writing, research the scholarship organization’s mission and reason for awarding the scholarship. Learning more about the organization can help you select an appropriate topic and relevant story.

While you should tailor your essay to the organization’s values, maintain your authentic voice. Never use false or exaggerated stories. If the organization’s values don’t align with yours or you can’t brainstorm a relevant story for the scholarship, continue searching for other scholarship opportunities to find a more appropriate one for you.

After researching the organization, identify a specific personal experience that embodies its values and exemplifies why you will be a successful student.

Choose a story with the following criteria:

• Responds to the prompt
• Demonstrates the organization’s values
• Includes an authentic story
• Focuses on you and your experience, not someone else’s

A good scholarship essay is not

• A resume of your achievements
• A lengthy opinion piece about the essay topic
• An essay featuring a negative tone that puts down others

If appropriate, you can briefly address how the scholarship money will help you achieve your educational goals. You should also end with a brief thank-you.

Prompt: Describe how working for Chelsea’s Chicken restaurant has developed leadership skills that will help you succeed in college. Give specific examples of leadership characteristics that you have exhibited during your employment with us.

As a nervous 16-year-old, I walked into Chelsea’s Chicken for my first day of work determined to make enough money to put gas in my car and buy pizza on the weekends. My only previous job was mowing my neighbors’ lawns when they were on vacation, so I had no idea what to expect. I was a bit intimidated by my new responsibilities, especially handling money and helping disgruntled customers.

However, it didn’t take me long to learn my way around the cash register and successfully address customer complaints. One day, Roger, the store manager, asked me if I wanted to join Chelsea’s Chicken Leadership Training Initiative. He said he saw leadership potential in me because of my attitude with the customers and my enthusiasm for learning new job responsibilities. It surprised me because I had never thought of myself as a leader, but I quickly agreed, and Roger handed me a three-ring binder that was thicker than my math and science textbooks put together! He told me to take it home and read over it during the following week.

In that binder, I discovered that being a leader means taking the initiative, especially when the job is undesirable. One week later, I got to practice that idea when a little kid threw up in the bathroom and missed the toilet. It smelled terrible, but I stepped forward and told Roger that I would clean it up. My coworkers thought I was crazy, but I started to believe in my leadership potential.

That night as we closed the store, Roger pulled me aside in the parking lot and told me that he could tell that I had been studying the manual. He wanted to give me more responsibility, along with a dollar-per-hour pay raise. I was surprised because I had been working there for only a couple of months, but his encouragement helped me make a connection: good leadership helps other people, and it often is rewarded. I was determined to experience more of both.

Within a month, I was ready to take the Team Leader exam, which mattered because I would receive a promotion and a much bigger raise if I passed. But, when I got to work, two of the scheduled team members had called in sick. We were noticeably short-handed, and our customers weren’t happy about it.

I walked back to the lockers, put on my vest and hat, and took my place behind an open register. Customers immediately moved into my line to place their orders. Roger looked at me with surprise and asked, “Did you forget that you’re testing tonight?” I responded, “No, sir—but what’s the use of taking a leadership test if you aren’t going to lead in real life?” Roger smiled at me and nodded.

He stayed late that night after we closed so that I could leave early and still take the test. I noticed that Roger was always staying late, helping employees learn new skills. His example taught me that leaders take the initiative to develop other leaders. He gave me a clear picture of what shared leadership looks like, making room for others to grow and excel. When I asked him where he learned to do that, he said, “From the same leadership manual I gave you!”

Chelsea’s Chicken has offered me so much more than a paycheck. Because of Roger’s example, I have learned to take the initiative to care for my family and friends, such as being the first to do the dishes without my mom asking or volunteering to pick up my friend for our SAT prep course. Now, as I prepare to enter college, I have confidence in my leadership ability. I know I’m signing up for a challenging major—Biology, Pre-Med—yet I also know that Chelsea’s Chicken has helped me to develop the perseverance required to complete my studies successfully.

A typical college application essay, also known as a personal statement, is 400-600 words. Although that may seem short, writing about yourself can be challenging. It's not something you want to rush or put off at the last moment. Think of it as a critical piece of the application process. Follow these tips to write an impactful essay that can work in your favor.

1. Start Early.

Few people write well under pressure. Try to complete your first draft a few weeks before you have to turn it in. Many advisers recommend starting as early as the summer before your senior year in high school. That way, you have ample time to think about the prompt and craft the best personal statement possible.

You don't have to work on your essay every day, but you'll want to give yourself time to revise and edit. You may discover that you want to change your topic or think of a better way to frame it. Either way, the sooner you start, the better.

2. Understand the Prompt and Instructions.

Before you begin the writing process, take time to understand what the college wants from you. The worst thing you can do is skim through the instructions and submit a piece that doesn't even fit the bare minimum requirements or address the essay topic. Look at the prompt, consider the required word count, and note any unique details each school wants.

3. Create a Strong Opener.

Students seeking help for their application essays often have trouble getting things started. It's a challenging writing process. Finding the right words to start can be the hardest part.

One of the most important things to remember is to keep to the essay topic. If you're applying to 10 or more colleges, it's easy to veer off course with so many application essays.

A common mistake many students make is trying to fit previously written essays into the mold of another college's requirements. This seems like a time-saving way to avoid writing new pieces entirely, but it often backfires. The result is usually a final piece that's generic, unfocused, or confusing. Always write a new essay for every application, no matter how long it takes.

5. Think About Your Response.

Don't try to guess what the admissions officials want to read. Your essay will be easier to write─and more exciting to read─if you’re genuinely enthusiastic about your subject. Here’s an example: If all your friends are writing application essays about covid-19, it may be a good idea to avoid that topic, unless during the pandemic you had a vivid, life-changing experience you're burning to share. Whatever topic you choose, avoid canned responses. Be creative.

6. Focus on You.

Essay prompts typically give you plenty of latitude, but panel members expect you to focus on a subject that is personal (although not overly intimate) and particular to you. Admissions counselors say the best essays help them learn something about the candidate that they would never know from reading the rest of the application.

7. Stay True to Your Voice.

Use your usual vocabulary. Avoid fancy language you wouldn't use in real life. Imagine yourself reading this essay aloud to a classroom full of people who have never met you. Keep a confident tone. Be wary of words and phrases that undercut that tone.

8. Be Specific and Factual.

Capitalize on real-life experiences. Your essay may give you the time and space to explain why a particular achievement meant so much to you. But resist the urge to exaggerate and embellish. Admissions counselors read thousands of essays each year. They can easily spot a fake.

9. Edit and Proofread.

When you finish the final draft, run it through the spell checker on your computer. Then don’t read your essay for a few days. You'll be more apt to spot typos and awkward grammar when you reread it. After that, ask a teacher, parent, or college student (preferably an English or communications major) to give it a quick read. While you're at it, double-check your word count.

Writing essays for college admission can be daunting, but it doesn't have to be. A well-crafted essay could be the deciding factor─in your favor. Keep these tips in mind, and you'll have no problem creating memorable pieces for every application.

What is the format of a college application essay?

Generally, essays for college admission follow a simple format that includes an opening paragraph, a lengthier body section, and a closing paragraph. You don't need to include a title, which will only take up extra space. Keep in mind that the exact format can vary from one college application to the next. Read the instructions and prompt for more guidance.

Most online applications will include a text box for your essay. If you're attaching it as a document, however, be sure to use a standard, 12-point font and use 1.5-spaced or double-spaced lines, unless the application specifies different font and spacing.

How do you start an essay?

The goal here is to use an attention grabber. Think of it as a way to reel the reader in and interest an admissions officer in what you have to say. There's no trick on how to start a college application essay. The best way you can approach this task is to flex your creative muscles and think outside the box.

You can start with openers such as relevant quotes, exciting anecdotes, or questions. Either way, the first sentence should be unique and intrigue the reader.

What should an essay include?

Every application essay you write should include details about yourself and past experiences. It's another opportunity to make yourself look like a fantastic applicant. Leverage your experiences. Tell a riveting story that fulfills the prompt.

What shouldn’t be included in an essay?

When writing a college application essay, it's usually best to avoid overly personal details and controversial topics. Although these topics might make for an intriguing essay, they can be tricky to express well. If you’re unsure if a topic is appropriate for your essay, check with your school counselor. An essay for college admission shouldn't include a list of achievements or academic accolades either. Your essay isn’t meant to be a rehashing of information the admissions panel can find elsewhere in your application.

How can you make your essay personal and interesting?

The best way to make your essay interesting is to write about something genuinely important to you. That could be an experience that changed your life or a valuable lesson that had an enormous impact on you. Whatever the case, speak from the heart, and be honest.

Is it OK to discuss mental health in an essay?

Mental health struggles can create challenges you must overcome during your education and could be an opportunity for you to show how you’ve handled challenges and overcome obstacles. If you’re considering writing your essay for college admission on this topic, consider talking to your school counselor or with an English teacher on how to frame the essay.

Certified Angus Beef offers up to $100,000 worth of scholarships to college students

Certified Angus Beef invites college students who are passionate about agriculture to apply for the 2024 Colvin Scholarship Fund by April 30.

Through the Colvin Scholarship Fund, Certified Angus Beef aims to cultivate and support future leaders in the beef industry, according to Danielle Matter, director of brand experience and education.

For more than two decades, the fund named after Louis M. “Mick” Colvin, co-founder and former executive director of Certified Angus Beef, has supported more than 100 students pursuing an education in agriculture, a Certified Angus Beef news release said.

The scholarship amount continues to grow with increasing support from brand partners. Certified Angus Beef reported 23 scholars received $81,500 in 2023.

This year, Certified Angus Beef will grant a record amount of $100,000 in scholarships to college students across three categories: production agriculture, undergraduate and graduate. Each category has requirements including essay questions, resumes and letters of recommendation.

“We are thrilled to increase our support this year, providing even more opportunities for aspiring professionals,” Matter said.

The 2024 scholarship will support the next generation of agricultural leaders dedicated “to preserving farm and ranch traditions, researching and developing improved beef quality practices and devoting their careers, studies and activities to making the beef industry even better,” according to the release.

Applicants will undergo a comprehensive evaluation process, considering factors based on academic achievements, extracurricular involvement, communication skills and commitment to the beef industry. Industry experts and Certified Angus Beef representatives on a selection committee will choose the most deserving candidates after a review process.

Scholarhips recipients will also earn the opportunity to connect with industry leaders and mentors. Top-place winners in each category will receive $7,500 and an all-expense paid trip to the 2024 Certified Angus Beef Annual Conference in Verona, New York, the release said.

Delaware 4-H Foundation announces 2024 scholarship opportunities

The Delaware 4-H Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit organization formed to manage private funds in support of the 4-H youth development program in Delaware. As an educational organization, the foundation encourages young adults to pursue education and training beyond high school. In recognition of continued 4-H leadership, funds are available to support one or more scholarships offered for Delaware 4-H members to pursue higher education.

Traditional Foundation Scholarship

To qualify, applicants must have completed five years as a 4-H member, with at least three of those in Delaware. Recipients must be high school graduates and be enrolled full-time at any two- or four-year institution of higher education for the fall or spring semester of the 2023-2024 academic year. Applicants may be enrolled in any area of study. High school seniors will be evaluated separately from matriculated college students. Scholarships will only be awarded once per individual; those not awarded are encouraged to apply again.

Annual Charles “Chuck” Busker Memorial Scholarship from the Delaware 4-H Foundation established in 2024

High school seniors or college students who are pursuing a degree in agriculture will be considered for this scholarship of $5,000.00 to support their studies. Students with an interest in dairy demonstrated by multiple years of 4-H Dairy Project participation and leadership will be given top priority.  Applicants should use the same Delaware 4-H Foundation Scholarship Application to apply. Awardees are only eligible for the award once as a high school senior or college student.  This award is given in memory of Charles “Chuck” Busker, an avid dairy farmer and 4-H supporter, via the endowment in his memory with the Foundation.  

Scholarship for either award selection will be based upon a written essay, 4-H leadership, 4-H involvement, school/extracurricular activities, community involvement, academic performance, and two letters of reference. Applications may be downloaded from the Delaware 4-H Foundation website (http://www.delaware4hfoundation.org). Only current transcript and two (2) letters of reference may be attached. Incomplete application packages will not be considered.

Scholarship recipients will be announced at the Delaware State Fair. Scholarship checks will be issued to scholarship winners AFTER completion of their first semester. Awardees are required to submit a transcript from the first completed semester PRIOR to the check being issued.

Completed application form, most recent transcript, and two current reference letters are due to the State 4-H Office by May 1, 2024 via the University of Delaware’s Dropbox: www.udel.edu/dropbox .

This scholarship will be announced on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. during the Delaware 4-H Foundation Donor Appreciation Brunch, 4-H Building, Delaware State Fair, Harrington. No checks will be given out at the Delaware State Fair.

No person applying for this scholarship shall be discriminated against on the grounds of race, color, national origin, age or gender.

Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett honored three Hamilton County students — Margaret Brown, Ellie Lee, and Lisa Lin — for winning the statewide 2023 Civics Essay Contest.

The contest was open to all Tennessee students in public, charter, private school, or home school associations in grades K to 12. Schools selected up to two essays from each grade level to submit for the contest, which featured the theme “Why Civility Matters.”

Miss Brown, a Lookout Mountain Elementary School student, placed first in the K-2 nd grade category. Miss Lee, who represents Girls Preparatory School, and Miss Lin, who attends Signal Mountain Middle School, placed second and third in the 9-12 th grade category respectively.

“Congratulations to Margaret Brown, Ellie Lee, and Lisa Lin on their first, second, and third-place finishes in the 2023 Civics Essay Contest,” said Secretary Hargett. “Students like Margaret, Ellie, and Lisa demonstrate the future of our great state is bright.”

Misses Brown, Lee, and Lin earned TNStars 529 College Savings Program scholarships for their winning essays. Statewide, 7,749 students participated in this year’s contest.

The Secretary of State’s Civics Essay Contest, Anne Dallas Dudley Award, College Voter Registration Competition, and Student Mock Election are part of the office’s longstanding civics engagement efforts to prepare students to be actively engaged citizens.

The Secretary of State’s office also offers free lesson plans to help teachers incorporate civic engagement and citizenship into their curriculum. The plans, based on the Tennessee Blue Book, were initiated by the Secretary of State’s office and created by Tennessee teachers. Merit-Based Scholarships

Academic Scholarships are awarded based solely on academic achievement to full-time, first-year, and transfer students and typically range from $15,000 to $33,000. Students are notified of a scholarship award by the Office of Undergraduate Admission at the time of their admission. Scholarships are renewable for four years of study (eight semesters) and are contingent upon full-time undergraduate enrollment, while meeting specific cumulative GPA requirements. Merit scholarships are not eligible for appeals.

Boston Latin Academy Scholarship

Each year, Regis College awards scholarships to three graduating seniors of Boston Latin Academy who have been admitted to Regis. These $5,000 scholarships are awarded to students with strong academic records, interest in community service, and demonstrated need for financial assistance.

The scholarship is renewable annually, contingent upon maintaining a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and continued financial need.

To be considered for the scholarship, students need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) , which will determine financial need.

Students must apply for admission by the February 15 priority deadline.

Carole Remick Fellows Scholarship

To apply for this scholarship, interested students should first visit and read the Carole Remick Foundation website .

With funding from the Carole Remick Foundation, Regis will award scholarships of up to $5,000 (based on financial need) for the 2023-2024 academic year. Full-time undergraduate students with an interest in a career in writing and/or communications will have the opportunity to apply for this scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria

• Students must have an interest in a career in writing and/or communications.
• The application process requires prospective students to write a 500-word essay reflecting on how their academic goals align with the overall mission of the Carole Remick Foundation. Please include your full name and Regis email with your essay submission.
• The selected students will be required to meet monthly with Dr. Colleen Malachowski, the Carole Remick Endowed Chair, and submit a portfolio of their work each semester for feedback.
• Please submit your 500-word essay to Dr. Malachowski at [email protected] by August 7, 2023.
• Scholarship recipients will be evaluated based on their academic potential, interest in writing, and financial need.

The Compassionate Leadership Scholarship

The Compassionate Leadership Scholarship - established by renowned health care and social justice activist, philanthropist, author, and Regis College honorary degree recipient Donato J. Tramuto - is a scholarship opportunity for students studying in the Young School of Nursing. The scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis to one student in the amount of $5,000. Applications are due on March 15, 2024, for the academic year (2024-2025).

Dare to Dream Scholarship

The Dare to Dream Scholarship supports international students who have financial need but do not qualify for traditional financial aid. This scholarship will be awarded to eligible students to ensure they can continue pursuing their educational goals and dreams at Regis.

The Fung Scholars and Fellows Program at Regis College is a four-year (fall and spring semester) undergraduate scholarship for residential students who are citizens of Hong Kong or Mainland China. The value of this scholarship is an approximate 50% reduction in tuition, room and board. The scholarship also includes the fees associated with one service immersion trip through Regis College’s Center for Ministry and Service .

The Common Application and recommendation form must be submitted by January 15 in order to be eligible for consideration.

Mary Jane England ’59, MD President Emerita Scholarship

The Mary Jane England ’59, MD President Emerita Scholarship was established in 2010 to honor former Regis president Mary Jane England ’59, MD, and her achievements in health and her innovative leadership. Scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $10,000. Applications are due on March 15, 2024, for the academic year (2024-2025).

Regis College Boston Excel Academy Scholarship

Each year, Regis College awards scholarships to three graduating seniors of Boston Excel Academy who have been admitted to Regis. These $5,000 scholarships are awarded to students with strong academic records, interest in community service, and demonstrated need for financial assistance.

Catholic High Schools Scholarship

Regis College offers a $4,000 scholarship to any graduate from any Catholic high school in the country.

Connors Scholarship

In the spirit of the generosity of Mr. Jack Connors, Regis College is proud to offer a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to one member of the incoming class that has an affiliation with a Boston area services organization. Preference is given to applicants who have an affiliation to Camp Harbor View as a counselor or camper.

The Connors Scholarship cannot be combined with any other institutional merit scholarships.

Eligibility

• Students must have a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.7 (A-) as recalculated by the Regis College of Undergraduate Admission.
• Apply for admission by the February 15 priority deadline.
• Have an affiliation with a Boston area services organization, specifically as an active participant or volunteer.
• Must provide a letter of recommendation from someone within the service organization by February 15.
• Must complete the Connors Scholarship essay.
• Plan to be a residential student (living on campus).

The Committee on Scholarships will make the final selection for the scholarship based on academic achievement, admission application materials, the Connors Scholarship recommendation, and extracurricular involvement in a Boston area service organization. Notification is typically by March 15.

Diverse Educator Scholarship

The Regis College Diverse Educator (RDE) Scholarship is a full-tuition, four-year (eight semesters) undergraduate scholarship for residential students committed to the field of education and to serving underrepresented populations in education.

RDE recipients must live on campus, maintain good academic status, and remain full-time students.

The Regis College Diverse Educator Scholarship cannot be combined with any other institutional merit scholarships.

• Students must have a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.7 (A-) as recalculated by the Regis College of Undergraduate Admission .
• Plan to major in one of Regis College’s education majors.
• Must complete the Diverse Educator Scholarship essay.

The Committee on Scholarships will make the final selection for the scholarship based on academic achievement, admission application materials, and the required essay. Notification is typically by March 15.

Hannah C. Bradley Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Hannah C. Bradley Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1994 by Jacalyn C. Egan, who identified the fact that non-traditional students pursuing an undergraduate degree face unique obstacles.

Students today face many challenges: familial loss, culture shock, juggling the demands of home, family, childcare, and employment. All of these factors, coupled with a full class schedule, can be daunting. In addition, the financial restrictions and needs of undergraduate, non-traditional and or international students are defined by their unique set of circumstances. The permanently endowed Hannah C. Bradley Endowed Scholarship Fund makes awards to non-traditional undergraduate students facing unique obstacles.

Phi Theta Scholarship (transfer students only)

Transfer students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society are eligible for this scholarship.

• An additional requirement for the scholarship is a letter of recommendation from a Phi Theta Kappa advisor.
• The scholarship can be renewed up to three years, contingent upon the student maintaining a full-time status and a 3.0 or above grade point average.

Presidential Catholic Schools Scholarship

The Regis Presidential Catholic Schools Scholarship is a four-year, full-tuition scholarship for residential students. High-achieving graduating seniors from Catholic high schools within the United States and all U.S. territories are eligible for this scholarship opportunity. Recipients are selected by the Committee on Scholarships based on their academic achievement, leadership ability, and extracurricular profile.

The Presidential Catholic Schools Scholarship cannot be combined with any other institutional merit scholarships.

• Will graduate from a Catholic high school in the United States or a U.S. territory.
• Have a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.7 (A-) as recalculated by the Regis College of Undergraduate Admission.
• Must complete the Presidential Catholic Schools Scholarship essay.
• Finalists will be invited to interview (in-person or virtually) with members of the scholarship committee.

The Committee on Scholarships will make the final selection for the scholarship based on academic achievement, admission application materials, the required essay, and interview. Notification is typically by March 15.

Regis College Puerto Dear Neighbor Scholarship

The Regis College Puerto Dear Neighbor Scholarship is a full-tuition, four-year undergraduate scholarship for residential students who demonstrate the values of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston . These values include:

The Puerto Rico Dear Neighbor Scholarship cannot be combined with any other institutional merit scholarships.

Sloane Scholarship

The Sloane Scholarship is a four-year, full-tuition undergraduate scholarship available to one member of the incoming first-year class studying in the Sloane School of Business and Communication .

The Sloane Scholarship cannot be combined with any other institutional merit scholarships.

• Plan to study in one of the majors in the Sloan School of Business and Communications.

Yellow Ribbon Program/Scholarship

The Yellow Ribbon Program allows institutions of higher learning to enter into a voluntary agreement with the Department of Veterans Affairs to contribute funds to a veteran’s unmet tuition and fee charges. Under the program, Regis can contribute up to half of any tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate, and the Veterans Administration will match the amount.
