Ladbrook insurance, homework club insurance, typical risks.

  • Public liability insurance for homework clubs will protect if a claim is bought by a third party for damage to their person or property.  Often venues for homework clubs will insist that you have this cover.
  • Volunteers running the homework club can be insured too, normally this is managed under an employers liability insurance product

Many local organisations create homework clubs on a non profit basis to benefit the community.  While many schools operate homework clubs, sometimes, parents or community groups decide to set up their own.

If you are setting up or running a homework club then insurance is a consideration for your group.  Often the first time homework club insurance is thought about is when the facility (often a community library or village hall) asks the group to organise public liability insurance.

We can advise you on the relevant covers for your club and provide some pointers in the policies you might want to have in place for your club.

Homework Club Insurance: Running a Successful Club

Check you do not need to be ofsted registered.

Most groups that work with children will need to register with Ofsted.  However, a number of exceptions to this rule apply which may be valid for your homework club.  Read this Ofsted Guidance and in particular, examine Annex A to see if your club is exempt.

Understand Who Will Come

It is a good idea to set a total number of spaces in the homework club that you would allow.  This means that you can plan the support you need, particularly in respect of the numbers of adults required. You can always expand the size of the club later but when setting up, set a limit.

Consider where the children are coming from and advertise accordingly.  Is it one community, one particular school?

As well as attracting pupils, you need to have a communication tree.  Mobile numbers and emails are essential.  Create a communication tree if you can to get urgent messages out such as changes in times, things you might want the children to bring or even a late cancellation.

Prepare the Study

The critical success factor in any homework club is preparing the materials.  If you get this right, the children will be entertained and the session will run smoothly.  Prepare any reference materials, test any web connections you need and always have a plan B!

Funding the Club

Some clubs do charge a fee but most of the homework clubs that we insure are run on a non profit basis.  Some clubs might make a small charge (some do this on a voluntary basis, particularly in areas of deprivation), plan this out.

You might find local charitable trusts can provide some funding for the club and it is also worth investigating grants.  While local authority funding has become much more difficult to attain in recent years, it is worth investigating if any support is available.  The UK Community Foundation has some information about support that is available.

Set Good Guidelines

Of course you want the environment for the children in the homework club to be enjoyable.  However, it is important to balance that feel good spirit with the right level of control.  Setting out good ground rules at the start is essential.

You and your volunteers will be working with children and so DBS checks are essential.  It is a legal requirement for anyone working with children on a regular basis.  The Disclosure and Barring Service will check volunteers criminal records and provide peace of mind for all volunteers and parents involved in the club.  DBS checks can be done through several online providers but your local Voluntary Action or CVS organisation might also provide this service.

Why a homework club could work for your child

Girl in library

What is a homework club?

Homework clubs offer a place for your child to work in a supportive environment out of school hours.

Why choose a homework club?

Some children are so self-motivated that they’re able to work diligently on homework and ignore the distractions of normal family life, but not everyone finds it so easy.

Learning journey programme

Boost Your Child's English & Maths!

  • Weekly programme for each school year
  • Worksheets sent direct to your inbox
  • Keeps your child's learning on track

Doing homework requires a quiet space to work at home and support from you. If your job or other children make it tricky to provide those things you might want to consider the option of a homework club.

Who runs homework clubs?

Schools and many public libraries offer them, usually after school finishes for the day. Check what’s available with your school and local authority. The biggest advantage of a school-based homework club is that it’s on the same premises, so children don’t have to travel to the club.  Familiarity with teachers is also a plus point, and your child is in an environment where they are already relaxed.

If your child would prefer a change of location at the end of the school day a library homework club might be the answer. They usually run from 4pm to 6.30pm and sometimes for a few hours on a Saturday morning. “We find that children start getting more homework from the age of nine onwards so our clubs are of most benefit for eight to 14-year-olds,” says Lucy Love, manager for children and young people at libraries run by Enfield Council. “Under-eights can come to the club but a parent or carer must be with them.”

What benefits do clubs offer?

“The great thing about library homework clubs are the homework centre assistants – while they don’t do the child’s work, they have the knowledge and experience to guide them to the relevant books or online resources such as encyclopaedias,” explains Lucy. “We encourage children to use online data, as it’s usually the most up-to-date, and can offer equipment such as protractors and SATs papers. Homework clubs are also a great way of helping the child’s transition to secondary school.”

What to do after homework club

  • When you get home, ask your child to explain what their homework is – this will show you they have understood it properly themselves.
  • Help your child to settle down and concentrate by making sure there are no distractions around them when they go over their homework with you.
  • Encourage your child to check their work to reinforce the learning they have done.

What Is Homework Club?

Homework club is an after school club for students to complete homework/school work. Students report to a specific classroom and are supervised by a teacher. The teacher will offer assistance and check on students to make sure they are completing school work. The length of homework club will vary by school but usually lasts for about an hour after the school day ends.

Who Is Homework Club For?

Homework club if for students that struggle to complete school work and homework.

Students that attend homework club benefit from a quiet place to complete work after school.

Homework club is usually available to all students but often students with a 504 or an IEP will get first consideration.

In my school we have limited spaces in homework club so it’s up to us, the teachers, to choose students that will benefit from it the most.

If you need a description of what homework is then I answered that in this article .

homework club insurance

How Often Is Homework Club?

How often a school has homework club really depends on the school and the district.

First of all not all schools have the means to offer homework club to students.

Because the teacher that supervises the students in homework club needs to be compensated and some schools don’t have the money to pay them.

For schools that do have the money to pay a teacher to supervise homework club they may offer homework club every day or only a few days a week.

The middle school I work at offers our students homework club two days a week.

Is Homework Club Effective?

Whether or not homework club is effective depends on two things: the teacher supervising and the students.

If the supervisor engages with the students and sets expectations for work completion then the club can have an impact.

However, if the supervising teacher is not engaged then the students will not get as much work done.

In my experiences I have seen homework as beneficial to students but have also had students that attend it and it doesn’t seem to impact their grade or learning at all.

Often the students that are in homework club are students that struggle with work completion and organization.

This is why the teacher that supervises them really needs to have them set daily or weekly goals to ensure that work completion is taking place.

How to Set Up a Homework Club

homework club insurance

Homework clubs can be a fantastic way for students to get together, help each other, and stay motivated to complete their school assignments. If you’re considering setting up a homework club, here are some steps to guide you through the process.

 Define the Purpose and Goals

Before you start a homework club, it’s important to determine why you’re starting it and what you hope to achieve. Do you want to provide a quiet space for individual study, or are you aiming for collaborative learning where students help each other? Setting clear goals will help guide the structure of your club.

 Choose a Location

A suitable location is critical. This place should be quiet, have enough space, and be easily accessible to students. Libraries, community centers, or empty classrooms are excellent places as they provide a formal atmosphere conducive to studying.

 Set a Schedule

Decide on the days and times that the homework club will meet. It’s important to consider when students are most likely to attend — after school or in the evening. Be consistent with the timing so that students can build it into their routine.

 Gather Materials

Make sure you have all the materials necessary for effective studying: textbooks, reference books, stationary supplies like pens and paper, computers with internet access if possible, printer/scanner facilities, etc.

 Establish Rules and Structure

Creating a set of rules helps to maintain order and focus within the group. For instance, settle on rules regarding noise levels, toy usage during club time (like phones), or bringing snacks. Additionally, decide how the time will be structured—whether there’ll be a quick briefing at the start of each session or if students break off into groups.

 Recruit Members

You’ll need to promote your homework club to gather members. You can do this by creating flyers and posters to advertise around your school or local community centers. You could also use social media or word-of-mouth to get the word out there.

 Find Supervision

Having an adult supervisor like a teacher or parent can help oversee the club activities. This person can provide homework help if needed or mediate any disruptions that arise during study time.

 Secure Funding if Necessary

If you require funds for materials or snacks, look into potential sponsorships from local businesses or educational grants available in your area that support after-school programs.

 Monitor Progress and Solicit Feedback

It’s important to keep track of how well the homework club is meeting its intended goals. Ask for regular feedback from members and adjust your strategies accordingly. This ensures that the club remains effective and continues to meet student needs.

With careful planning and management, a homework club can be an invaluable resource that fosters community support among students as they work towards academic success.

Homework Club

Hello and Welcome to Homework Club!

Here are a few guidelines to help you have a productive and enjoyable time in Homework Club:

  • Remember that Homework Club goes from 2:20 until 3:20.
  • Please bring everything you will need to go home to Homework Club.
  • You are expected to stay quiet and work until 3:00 p.m. Since many students in Homework Club are trying to get work finished before they go home, please respect their time and effort by staying quiet.
  • You are allowed to have your cell phone, but, please, do not use it during our time together. If it seems that you are abusing the privilege of being able to have your phone with you, it can stay on our desk until you are ready to leave. We will alert you to any messages you get during homework club time.
  • If you are completing make-up work for another teacher, please, grab a stickie note from our desk and write the name of the teacher on it. This way we can put it in the correct mailbox for you.
  • You are welcome to borrow a book to read from our shelves - please remember to return it when you are finished.
  • Of course you may have a snack - just be mindful of others’ allergies and clean up after yourself.
  • We will gladly help you with your assignments (except for tests). There is usually an 8th grader who can help you as well.

Homebrew Club Insurance

club-insurance

Insurance enrollment is currently closed. Open enrollment for the 12-month policy period opens July 1st, 2024 and runs through September 1st. This policy term will be September 1, 2024 – September 1, 2025. Your club can sign-up for coverage, new policy pricing coming soon.

The next enrollment period following the 12-month policy period will be the 2025 9-month policy period starting on December 1, 2024. 2025 policy information will be posted at a later date.

Homebrew club members know the fun and the value of being in a club—and the degree of risk that is involved when a group of people gathers to share alcoholic beverages. That risk involves both the venue hosting the club meeting or event and the risk to the club itself if an accident were to occur following a homebrew club gathering.

The American Homebrewers Association (AHA) has found a homebrew club insurance product that is a good fit for our membership.

To address their exposure, some homebrew clubs have purchased insurance themselves—often at a steep cost, as insurance for individual clubs can be expensive. The AHA-facilitated insurance option provides participating clubs with general liability insurance ($1 million/occurrence; $3 million aggregate) and liquor liability insurance ($1 million/occurrence; $3 million aggregate) that collectively covers both club meetings and club-sponsored events for up to 1,000 attendees—all at a cost to the club of just $4.71 per club member.

2023/2024 Policy Disclaimer: Great American Insurance Group (underwriters) has provided West Insurance a $0.23 increase in the premium per member, bringing the cost per member to $4.71 for the 2023/2024 policy term. The premium rate increase is a typical market increase based on the type of insurance (General Liability) and the exposure around alcohol.

The AHA continues to elect to not take any marketing fees or commissions from this program; this ensures our membership enjoys the absolute lowest premiums possible for the homebrewing community.

The AHA has partnered with  West’s Insurance Agency  to bring this program to fruition. The insurance is underwritten by Great American Insurance Company (GAIC), which has an A+ AM Best rating, the highest level rating of an insurer’s financial strength and ability to meet its ongoing obligations.

In addition to the general and liquor liability coverage mentioned above, West’s Insurance also offers a Directors and Officers (D&O) insurance product for homebrew clubs. See below for more details on D&O coverage.

Homebrew clubs must be registered with the AHA to sign up for the insurance plan. To learn more and/or to enroll as a club, please visit West’s Insurance .

Get your Club Insurance Cost Reimbursed!

Clubs that demonstrate an AHA membership rate of 75% or more (minimum 5 members enrolled in club insurance) are eligible to have their general liability and liquor liability insurance premium payments reimbursed by the American Homebrewers Association. If at least 75% of your club’s members are also AHA members, we will issue a check to reimburse your club’s insurance premium after each open enrollment period ends annually on September 1, December 1, and March 1, depending on which policy term your club is enrolled in. Please allow a couple of months for us to process reports for reimbursement status for your club.

To ensure that your club receives its premium reimbursement, your members need to  Join the American Homebrewers Association , and select your club from the drop-down list in the “My Affiliations” section when joining or renewing their memberships. Club members who are already AHA members but did not indicate a club affiliation when joining should  log in to their accounts on the AHA website  and update their club affiliation. This is a crucial action for your club members to take to ensure you are eligible for premium reimbursement.

Make sure we have your clubs correct mailing address, click here to update.

Directors and Officers Insurance

D&O insurance provides liability coverage for the club’s directors and officers for decisions they make while serving the club in that capacity. Individuals can be held personally liable for these decisions while representing their club and the D&O insurance provides coverage which includes costs to defend the directors, officers, and the club against a lawsuit.

The main difference between the current Homebrew Club Insurance Program and a D&O policy is that the Homebrew Club Program provides coverage for the club’s negligence that causes someone to be physically injured or someone else’s property to be damaged because of a mistake by someone in the club or the club’s activities. The D&O insurance provides coverage if a director, officer, or club is sued by someone based on the decisions made that someone else thinks are wrong.

An example would be if someone alleges that they were discriminated against in the declination of their membership in the club or the removal of an individual’s membership status in the club. Another example would be if a fellow club member files a suit against the club’s officers because they are unhappy with the direction of the club or use of funds, etc.

Pricing Includes:

  • Clubs up to 75 members – $300 annual premium
  • Clubs 76-150 members – $400 annual premium
  • Clubs 151 members and higher – $500
  • *The average cost for a club to secure this coverage on an individual basis is $750-$1,000.

The D&O limits:

  • $1,000,000 – Per Club
  • $10,000,000 – Aggregate – shared by all clubs

Voluntary groups throughout the country run hospital & community radios as it is a great way to support and inform the local community to what is happening within the area. As a direct means of communication from voluntary groups and Charites to members of the public, these groups are a vital part of the third sector.

One issue many have faced and will likely face again is insurance, what exactly is required for a hospital / community radio in terms of the cover they require. Through our specialism and experience in working alongside community / hospital radios, we can ensure you not only are correctly insured but fully understand the policy you hold and what risks would be insured against.

Typical key risks include

  • All Risks and Contents cover for any of the equipment the group owns such as microphones, laptops, audio interfaces, photocopiers.
  • Defamation cover should anyone alleged the group caused a loss through the comments the community / hospital radio station made.
  • Public Liability is an essential part to any cover, if you lease the building this will cover you for an allegation you have caused damage to the building.

Community Radios are one of the most prominent ways in which Charites can contact the local community to inform them of events and activities within the area. With our expertise in the third sector we can ensure all aspects of the risks are covered. Charlotte Ainsley, Account Handler

Now that our insurance cover has been arranged, I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for all of your help. I had tried quite a few companies before without any luck. Annoyingly some said they would call me back when they had found a product, but they didn’t. So, I am glad to find you and your company. I found a high level of professionalism with yourself and all staff I have spoken to, it was very refreshing. The process was straightforward and guidance given was much appreciated, I will highly recommend Ladbrook in the future. Thankyou once again.
