Procrastination

11 ways to overcome procrastination, easy tips to stop putting things off..

Posted March 7, 2017 | Reviewed by Jessica Schrader

  • What Is Procrastination?
  • Find a therapist near me
  • Procrastination is not a time management problem; rather, it's likely due to difficulty managing negative feelings like boredom or anxiety.
  • But avoiding negative emotions—and important tasks—tends to lead to much worse outcomes in the long run, including more stress and regret.
  • Changing your mindset, rewarding yourself for progress, and letting go of perfectionism can all help you overcome procrastinating tendencies.

Everyone has put off a task at some point in their life. (Take, for example, this article that I had planned on posting yesterday...) But have you ever wondered why you—or others—procrastinate? While some view it (in themselves or other people) as laziness, there might be something else at play.

In psychology, it has long been believed that people who procrastinate have a faulty sense of time—that they think they will have more time to get something done than they actually do. While that may be true for some, more recent research suggests procrastination is linked to difficulty managing distress. Specifically, it seems that task aversion is to blame—that is, when people view a task in an unpleasant manner (“It will be tough, boring, painful...”), they are more likely to put it off.

While procrastinators may be trying to avoid distress, this approach can ironically cause more distress in the long run. Procrastination can lead to increased stress, health problems, and poorer performance. Procrastinators tend to have more sleep issues and experience greater stressful regret than non-procrastinators. What’s more, procrastination can also hinder your self-esteem with the guilt , shame , or self-critical thoughts that can result from putting off tasks.

If you struggle with putting things off, try any of these tips to get you on track:

1. Get rid of catastrophizing .

One of the biggest reasons people procrastinate is because they catastrophize, or make a huge deal out of something. It may be related to how tough, how boring, or how painful it will be to complete the task; whatever the case, the underlying theme is that doing the task will be “unbearable.”

In reality, challenges, boredom , and hard work will not kill you—or even make you sick. Procrastination, on the other hand, is associated with stress—think of the stress you feel when you avoid making a phone call you know you need to make. So keep things in perspective: “Sure, this is not my favorite task, but I can get through it.”

2. Focus on your “why.”

Procrastinators focus more on short-term gains (avoiding the distress associated with the task), as opposed to long-term results (the stress of not doing it, as well as the consequences of avoiding this task). Instead, try focusing on why you are doing this task: What are the benefits of completing it?

If you've been putting off cleaning out a closet, imagine walking into the closet when it is decluttered and how good that will feel. And consider how much money you will make by selling the items on eBay, or how those in need will feel when they receive these items as donations.

If it is an exercise program you have been avoiding, focus on how exercising will help you have more positive energy, give you a boost of self-esteem, and serve as a great role model for your children.

3. Get out your calendar.

Projects that will get done "when I have time” (as in “I will do it when I have time”) tend not to get done very often, if ever. You need to schedule when you are going to work on a project and block out that time, just as you would an important meeting.

And when it is time to do your work, set a timer so you can be focused for the entire allotted time.

4. Be realistic.

As you establish your schedule, set yourself up for success. Projects often take much longer than expected, so bake in some extra time. And look for ways to make it easier on yourself: If, for example, you are not a morning person, don’t expect yourself to get up an hour early to start the exercise program you have put off for months. It might be better to schedule that activity during lunch or before dinner.

5. Chunk it.

When a task seems overbearing, procrastination often follows. So how can you break that task into smaller, more manageable parts? For example, if you want to write a book, you may choose to make an outline, identify each chapter, figure out the sections in the chapters, and then commit to writing one segment at a time. Chunking it down like this will help you feel less overwhelmed and more empowered.

6. Excuses be gone.

Do any of these sound familiar? “I need to be in the mood.” “I will wait until I have time.” “I work better under pressure.” “I need X to happen before I can start.”

Be honest with yourself: These are excuses. Sure, it might be nice to ”be in the mood,” but waiting for that to happen can mean you never start your project.

7. Get a partner.

Establish specific deadlines for completing a task. Then find someone who will help you be accountable. It could be a promise to your boss or client that you will complete the job by a certain date. Or it may be a coach who helps you stay on track. Or simply find an accountability partner. In this relationship, you connect with someone (on the phone, for example) at certain time intervals (such as once per week) and commit to what you will do before your next meeting. Not wanting to go back on your word, this can be a great way to squash procrastination. (Note: In an effort to save your relationship with your significant other, I recommend this person not be your partner. You don’t want a lack of follow-through to cause tension between you.)

8. Optimize your environment.

Your environment can help or hinder your productivity . Beware especially of technology, such as your email or messenger that keeps pinging to let you know someone has reached out. Social media , internet “research” that leads you far off track, and phone calls can lead to procrastination.

So try this: During your scheduled block of time for working on a particular task, close your email and IM, turn off your phone (or at least set it on “Do Not Disturb” and put it out of sight), and don’t let yourself get on the web until you have completed the task, or hold off any necessary internet searches until the end.

9. Reward good behavior.

Establish a reward if—and only if—you do what you set out to do. Do not let yourself binge that new Netflix show, check your social media, or get lunch until you complete what you've scheduled. So instead of using these tasks and distractions to procrastinate, make them contingent on you actually finishing what you schedule yourself to do.

10. Forgive yourself.

Stop beating yourself up about the past. Thoughts such as “I should have started earlier” or “I always procrastinate; I am such a loser” will only make matters worse. Research shows that forgiving yourself for past procrastination will help you stop putting off working on a task.

You can try to use past procrastination to your advantage as well. How? Determine what went into your avoidance— fear , stress, not having a good understanding of how to progress, lack of accountability, etc. Then address those obstacles in the present and future. If, for example, it was fear that contributed to your procrastination, what steps can you take to feel more empowered and less fearful next time around?

11. Drop the perfectionism.

Perfectionism is an all-or-nothing mentality: Something is either perfect, or it is a failure. People with perfectionistic tendencies tend to wait until things are perfect in order to proceed—so, if it's not perfect, you cannot be finished. Or if it is not the perfect time, you believe you can't start. This all-or-nothing mentality can hold you back from starting or completing tasks.

Instead, focus on being better than perfect. This means to still strive for excellence, creating excellence, or setting yourself up with excellent conditions, but at the same time, you focus on getting the job done. Done is better than perfect.

Make “some day” today. Follow these steps to get started on your project, and be proud of every bit of progress you make.

Archive or delete a class

This article is for teachers.

When you’re done teaching a class, you can archive it. When a class is archived, it’s archived for all students and teachers in the class. If you don’t archive a class, students and teachers in the class continue to see it on their Classes page.

Teachers and co-teachers can archive a class, but only the primary teacher can delete a class. Students can’t archive or delete a class.

What happens to an archived class?

  • It’s placed in a separate area to preserve the class materials, student work, and posts. You won’t see it with your active classes on the Classes page.
  • You and your students can view an archived class. To use the class again, you have to restore it.
  • You and your students can still access any class materials in Google Drive. That includes any attachments for assignments or other student work.
  • Students can’t unenroll from an archived class. This can limit how students can manage the classes they’re done taking.

Note: An archived class stays in Classroom until you delete it. That’s why an archived class’s calendar still shows in your Google Calendar.

Archive or restore a class

You can copy classes before or after you archive them. For instructions, go to Copy a class .

Recommended Usage and Tips for AI Content Detection Remover

Quality Input : Start with well-structured, grammatically correct, and accurate prompts. This ensures that the rewriting process maintains the integrity of your original message.

Review and Edit : While our tool is highly effective, you get the best results when you review the rewritten content for accuracy, tone, and consistency. Make necessary adjustments as you see fit.

Iterative Rewriting : In some cases, it might be beneficial to rewrite the content multiple times to reduce the chances of AI detection further. Experiment with different iterations to find the best version.

Why you should use AI content detection remover?

Smodin’s AI Content Detection Remover provides users with a powerful solution for maintaining the creative essence of AI-generated content while bypassing AI detection software and tools. Our tool expertly restructures and rewrites your content, making it less recognizable as AI-generated while preserving its unique insights and ideas. Moreover, manually rewriting AI-generated content can be a time-consuming and labor-intensive process. This tool streamlines this task, allowing you to focus on other essential aspects of writing, including feeding better prompts, checking for accuracy, finding the right references, etc.

How to Avoid AI Plagiarism Detection

We have the solution to avoid AI detection: the recreate method. In the world of ChatGPT and large language models, AI writing is a must-have tool in your tool belt. However, there are ways to successfully detect AI generated content, and the only way to automatically prevent it is with a model trained on thousands of samples of human written data... and that is exactly what Smodin's recreate method is. Smodin's recreate method eliminates all AI detection methods in a single click, allowing you to efficiently create any content you need. There are situations, however, when text written by AI is too generic to be written by a human; for these situations it is recommended to generate a new text or make more than one attempt to produce a human-sounding text.

Check Text for Plagiarism

After you rewrite your text, you should make sure that the text passes plagiarism detection. Use our multi-lingual plagiarism detection application to quickly check the text for plagiarism!

What is AI Content Detection?

AI content detection is determining if a text is written by AI based on the randomness of the words. AI writing models tend to have a specific way of producing text based on the most frequent word orders. Is your text produced by an AI? Find out below!

Bo Nix of Oregon at the Senior Bowl

© Vasha Hunt-USA TODAY Sports

New York Giants Draft Preview: QB Bo Nix

Let's get the rundown on Bo Nix, a quarterback that the Giants could be considering in the draft.

  • Author: Brandon Olsen
  • Publish date: Apr 10, 2024

In this story:

Height: 6’ 2 ⅛” Weight: 214 lbs. Class: Fifth-year Senior School: Oregon STATS

Bo Nix was the highest-ranked dual-threat in the country coming out of Pinson Valley High School in 2019. Nix would initially commit to Auburn, where he started for three seasons before transferring to Oregon for the final two years of his college career.

 Strengths

* One of the best creators of the draft class - can use his legs to pick up first downs on his own or scrambles to open up passing lanes, keeping his eyes downfield outside of the pocket * Quick release that allows him to get rid of the ball immediately on RPOs * Capable of throwing from different arm slots * Pre-snap diagnosis ability was on display with an Oregon offense that relied on RPOs and quick game * “Grip it and rip it” release * Does a good job of selling play-fakes and causing hesitation * Can layer throws from a vertical base and while on the move * Has one of the better pump fakes you’ll see from a college QB * Throws while on the move are relatively accurate and consistent * Difficult to sack when pressure gets in * Knows how to effectively work the seams between the linebacker and safety * Knows when his receivers have the speed advantage and will give them an opportunity to win early on * Puts nice touch on the ball when throwing fades

[ View more draft prospect scouting profiles. ]

   Weaknesses

* Will be 24 as a rookie, 28-29 at the expiration of his first contract * Arm strength is passable but isn’t capable of making the more difficult passes consistently * Ball velocity dies too quickly * Has struggled to process the field on longer-developing plays * Mechanical improvement could solve issues he has with downfield accuracy and velocity - footwork is far too hoppy, far too often * Tends to shy away from pressure when he’s a target in the pocket which leads to erratic passes

Bo Nix may be the most difficult quarterback to evaluate in the 2024 Draft class. His film at Auburn was undraftable, but that was two years ago and he’s improved - but has he improved enough? If an offense wants to be mostly dictated by pre-snap reads and the RPO, then Nix has a chance to run that offense on time effectively. Asking him to sit in the pocket and go through progressions may never work out.

He’s one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the class, but he struggles with processing ability. He’s one of the best RPO and quick game quarterbacks that also thrives when a play breaks down and he’s able to use his athleticism in order to make magic.

Twins get Tonkin from Mets, put Kepler on injured list

A foul ball to Max Kepler's right knee on Opening Day sidelined him for the next two games, and now he will sit for at least 10 games, which includes the entire upcoming seven-game road trip.

Kepler was put on the 10-day injured list Tuesday because of a right knee contusion, which is retroactive to Sunday. The Twins filled his spot on the active roster by acquiring righthanded reliever Michael Tonkin from the New York Mets for cash. Tonkin, who pitched for the Twins from 2013-17, was designated for assignment last Friday.

"Max just didn't feel like the bruise or contusion was really getting better fast enough," Twins Manager Rocco Baldelli said. "I think it was just uncomfortable and something he couldn't get rid of. He wants to get rid of it before he's able to play."

Kepler was 1-for-20 (.050 batting average) with six strikeouts and one walk in his first five games. Matt Wallner started in right field in Kepler's absence, and the Twins plan to use Manuel Margot, Austin Martin and Alex Kirilloff in left field.

There was no additional testing for Kepler's knee, so the Twins are hopeful it will be a short stint on the IL.

"The only change was basically coming from Max and him telling us how he feels and that he didn't feel good," Baldelli said.

Tonkin, the 6-7 reliever, permitted six hits and eight runs (two earned) in four innings for the Mets before he was designated for assignment. He is out of minor league options, and the Twins completed their trade for him before he was placed on waivers. Tonkin made 45 relief appearances for Atlanta last year with a 4.28 ERA.

"He's definitely a guy that has made good adjustments over his career, and we think there is still plenty in there to be a really successful pitcher," Baldelli said.

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Tonkin, the Twins transferred pitcher Zack Weiss (right shoulder strain) to the 60-day injured list.

Twins relievers Caleb Thielbar and Josh Staumont were scheduled to begin Class AAA rehab assignments Tuesday.

Thielbar, who was bothered by a left hamstring strain during spring training, is expected to pitch in at least two minor league games before the Twins put him in their bullpen.

"I can't speak to what is going to happen after his second outing because I really don't know at this point," Baldelli said. "It's going to be about how he's feeling and what he's going to be capable of when he returns."

Staumont, an offseason free agent signing, can be optioned to the minor leagues, so he could remain with the St. Paul Saints once he fully recovers from his right calf strain.

* Injured Twins closer Jhoan Duran says he expects to throw a bullpen session Friday in Detroit, which will be his first time off a mound since he strained his right oblique in spring training.

Shahar Azani to Newsmax: Nixing Netanyahu Doesn't 'Get Rid of the Headache'

By Nicole Wells    |   Tuesday, 09 April 2024 01:49 PM EDT

There is a false idea circulating within foreign governments that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were only replaced, the Israeli government would be taking a different approach with Hamas, according to former Israeli diplomat Shahar Azani on Newsmax .

Getting rid of Netanyahu does not "get rid of the headache" of Hamas terrorism, Azani told " National Report ."

"First of all, there are two different dimensions here: The one is the Netanyahu government vis-à-vis Chuck Schumer and the calls that we hear in Europe and in some places in the U.S. — there is some sort of confusion in governments abroad, thinking that when it comes to Israel's approach, Netanyahu is the problem," Azani said.

"The truth is that it does not matter who would lead Israel at this point in time, whether it's Benjamin Netanyahu or … anyone else. The actions of the Israeli government and the activities taken by the Israel Defense Forces against Hamas and the terrorists in Gaza won't change."

"This is a clear-cut demand of the Israeli people, to remove and annihilate the threat from our southern border," he continued. "No Israeli is going to go back to normalcy, knowing that Hamas is still in existence as a political and military governing entity of the Gaza Strip, and that has no difference who the prime minister is, and that needs to be made very, very clear. Some people out there think that if they only get rid of Netanyahu, they're going to get rid of the headache. That's not true. The only way to move forward is by eradicating Hamas."

Azani also responded to Monday's meeting between Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid in Washington, in which the two men discussed the importance of Israel and Hamas resolving their conflict.

"Anything that can be done by anyone to bring about the release of the Israeli hostages held in captivity for over six months is welcome," he said. "I have to tell you that the recent actions of the American administration trying to apply pressure on Israel clearly do not help.

"I mean, when Hamas sees Israel under international pressure, they have the misconception that if they only wait a bit longer than they're going to get what they want, which they won't.

"But, at the end of the day, it means that our hostages … are staying in captivity for additional time, which is unnecessary."
