Johaar Movie Review: Teja Marni’s anthology is a tale of hope and betrayal

It is not easy delineating contrasting characters and telling their life stories with a bit of realism, even while juggling between the narratives - but debutant director Teja Marni has managed to do it with finesse.

There is a great amount of honesty in Johaar, which is quite refreshing. It is there in the writing, in the performances and in the frames. The success of an anthology lies in that magical thread that interconnects stories in the most convincing way. Johaar, which is streaming on digital platform Aha from today (August 14), does that beautifully by unravelling heart-wrenching tales of love, hope and betrayal.

In the very first scene, we are introduced to a politician (Chaitanya Krishna), who wants to build a statue for his late father, ex-Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, even if it has to happen at the expense of the State. Within a few minutes, we are transported into the worlds of seemingly unrelated individuals who continue their fight for freedom in their own way. A 70-year-old man (Sudhakar) who wants to build a hostel for orphan kids, a tea seller (Ankith Koyaa) who aims to become an entrepreneur, a mother (Easwari Rao) struggling to save her ailing daughter and a circus performer (Naina Ganguly) with ambitions to become an athlete. Johaar is all about how the lives of all these characters get affected by the political scenario that’s existing in the nation. Teja’s powerful writing makes us root for the lead characters and empathise with them. One of the dialogues in the film, ‘The one who has power to give, can take your life as well’ summarises it all and tells how influential people in the society are capable of doing both. Johaar subtly explores state politics and opens discussion on government decisions to build expensive statues when there are other pressing issues in the country that need to be addressed. The romantic portions involving Ankith Koyaa and Esther Anil is the USP of the film. Their part adds brightness to the script which is otherwise heavy. However, when tragedy hits their lives as well, things become more complicated. Esther Anil’s character, that of a young girl, who escapes from her prostitute mother to lead a peaceful life wins our heart.

However, Teja could have made Sudhakar’s part much more realistic. The scenes in which he struggles to get funds from the government for restoration of his hostel is redundant and doesn’t create an impact within. But, Easwari Rao’s portion made up for the loss. Her performance as the mother of a kid who is suffering from kidney ailments is endearing.

The anthology ends with the story of the politician who wants to build a statue for his late father, five times higher than the statue of liberty. Will he implement it or understand the difficulties it has caused the commoners?

Though a leisurely pace and predictable screenplay make this film somewhat uneven, the honesty in the storytelling makes it work. A couple of compositions from Priyadarshan are captivating, while cinematographer Jagadeesh Cheekati impresses with some picture-perfect visuals.

Overall, Johaar is a powerful film that throws light on the government's negligence towards the healthcare sector, agriculture, sports and education. A good watch over the weekend.

Johar, starring Naina Ganguly, Chaitanya Krishna, Eshwari Rao, and Subhaleka Sudhakar in prominent roles was released on digital streaming platform, ‘Aha’ today. The film marks the directorial debut of Teja Marni. Let us see what the film has in store for the viewers.

The lives of an aspiring sprinter Bala(Naina Ganguly), students rights leader Bose(Subhaleka Sudhakar), a depressed mother Gangamma(Eshwari Rao), and a prostitute Jyothi ( Esther Anil) take unforeseen turns after the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh Vijay Varma(Chaitanya Krishna) decides to erect a huge statue of his father. How does the chief minister’s decision affect their lives? What are its consequences and how does it impact the state? You might have to watch the film to know the answers.

How about on-screen performances?

The casting for this film is absolutely spot on. The actors fit their respective roles perfectly and they shoulder the film effectively. Of all the characters, Eshwari Rao bags the meatier one and she delivers big time. The mother-daughter episodes leave the viewers teary eyed and the emotional connect is pretty strong. Subhaleka Sudhakar, Esther Anil, and Chaitanya Krishna deliver subtle performances. Naina Ganguly, who was mostly seen in glamorous roles gets an author-backed character and she grabs hold of the opportunity.

How about off-screen talents?

The film is backed by an excellent technical team and their good work provides the impetus for this social drama. Dialogues by Ram Vamsi Krishna are of top quality. He deserves to be applauded for penning hard-hitting dialogues that perfectly portray the theme of the proceedings. Also, music and cinematography are exquisite. Priyadardhan’s background score is scintillating and it carries the mood very well. Gandhi’s art work is neat.

Sandeep Marni picks a story which has a great premise. It deals with the greedy and selfish nature of current-day politicians and the way in which it affects the lives of commoners. The film stays true to its theme and never goes off track, thanks to the conviction of the debut director Sandeep. The first half is smooth and fast-paced but predictable sequences in the second half dampen the mood to an extent. But the climax is appealing and it evokes interest. The CGI shots which were used to showcase the huge statue in the film look very authentic. The film is technically sleek.

The film highlights the greedy and self-centred nature of politicians and its effect on commoners. The film has excellent performances from the lead cast and some excelptional work by the technical team. However, predictability plays spoilsport in the second half and also, the film lacks entertaining elements which are expected by a regular movie-goer. That said, the film rides high on emotions and leaves the viewer moist eyed, all thanks to the strong plot.

Watch or not?

Those who love concept-based films can watch it and commercial cinema lovers can give it a skip.

Another movie drops on the OTT platform as movie theaters remain closed. Johar is a political satire anthology film directed by debutante Teja Marni.

What is it about?

A newly sworn in Chief Minister (Chaitanya Krishna) decides to put up a colossal statue of his late father. He cuts down the budget on allotted schemes to fulfil his dream. But this has an adverse effect on many poor peoples lives that are told as parallel stories. An old man (Subhalekha Sudhakar) who runs an orphanage, a street circus girl (Naina Ganguly) who wants to become an athlete, an on the run young couple (Ankit and Esther), a poor mother (Eeshwari Rao) whose kid is battling with a kidney ailment all get affected due to the dream of their state’s CM.

Performances:

Chaitanya Krishna is a fine actor and he looks authentic as the young Chief Minister. Subhalekha Sudhakar is good in emotional scenes. Eeshwari Rao also is in good form. Naina Ganguly’s agile and athletic frame suits the character, but her performance is very ordinary. Ankit and Esther are okay in their respective roles.

Technicalities:

Director has noble intentions in making this film. He wanted to show how a small event could become fatal for poor lives. However, the plot he has picked doesn’t seem logical. He might have been inspired by the colossal statue of Sardar Vallabai Patel instated in Gujarat. He should have chosen a government scheme or policy to make this film relatable. He also failed in telling the spite of poor people in an effective way. Music is passé. Cinematography is decent. Dialogues are okay. Production values are impressive for a low budget movie.

There are many silly government policies and schemes that make people lazy and also hamper the progress of a state. Every political party is throwing freebies to the poor to ensure victory in general elections. Director Teja should have targeted such stupid policies and their adverse effects on the development. Instead he focused on ‘statue politics’ that are not relevant to Telugu States.

He has shown spark in establishing the backdrops of his principal characters though. Subhalekha Sudhakar’s character seems cliched, but a street circus girl dreaming of becoming an athlete sound promising when she is introduced. Also, the much talked about Uddanam kidney ailment topic is the backdrop for Eshwari Rao’s story. The plight of a teenage girl whose mother is a sex worker, all seems to draw our attention at the beginning.

Apart from giving his characters an attention grabbing setting, director Teja Marni fails to drive them forward in an impactful manner. Uddanam kidney ailment issue is used as a screenplay tool and it is left aside as Eshwari Rao suddenly takes up farming. The teenage girl’s plight living in a house where her mother has sex with various men seems painful, but that angle is used just for the introduction of the character. She soon becomes a victim of an education scam that is linked to the giant statue.

Similarly, Naina Ganguly’s character is introduced well, but suddenly becomes victim of the CM’s dream. There’s nothing to say about Subhalekha Sudhakar’s track as it is straight out of an eighties movie. Director Teja failed to showcase the pain and troubles that these characters go through in a heart touching way. There are ample scenes to make the viewers feel bad for the characters, but none creates any desired impact.

Johar turns out to be a film with noble intentions that has gone terribly wrong in plotting and treatment. The runtime of the film is a little over two hours, but it seems very long and tedious because of the lacklustre writing.

Bottom Line: A yawn-inducing Satire!

గత కొన్ని నెలల కితమే పోస్టర్స్ తోనే మంచి పాజిటివ్ బజ్ ను సంతరించుకున్న చిత్రం “జోహార్”. అలాగే ఇటీవలే విడుదల చేసిన టీజర్ మరియు ట్రైలర్లతో కూడా ఆకట్టుకుని ఇపుడు నేరుగా స్ట్రీమింగ్ ప్లాట్ ఫామ్ “ఆహా” లో అందుబాటిలోకి వచ్చింది. మరి ఈ చిత్రం ఎలా ఉందో రివ్యూలో తెలుసుకుందాం రండి.

ఈ చిత్రంలో మొత్తం ఐదు భిన్నమైన కథలతో కొనసాగుతుంది, ఓ యువ ముఖ్యమంత్రి(కృష్ణ చైతన్య) తన తండ్రి జ్ఞ్యాపకార్ధం ఒక భారీ విగ్రహాన్ని తన అధికారం ద్వారా నిర్మించాలని పరితపిస్తాడు. అలాగే మరో పక్క ఓ పేద రైతు(ఈశ్వరి రావ్), అథ్లెట్(నైనా గంగూలీ), ఓ టీనేజ్ యువతి (ఈస్తర్) అలాగే ఓ అనాథశ్రయాన్ని నడిపే ముసలాయన(శుభలేఖ సుధాకర్) ల జీవితాలకు ఏమన్నా సంబంధం ఉందా? అతని వల్ల వీరికేమయ్యింది? అలా ఏర్పడిన రాజకీయ పరిణామాలు ఎటు దారి తీశాయి అన్నది అసలు కథ.

ప్లస్ పాయింట్స్ :

ఈ చిత్రంలో అన్నిటికన్నా మేజర్ ప్లస్ పాయింట్ ఏదన్నా ఉంది అంటే అది ఎమోషన్స్ చెప్పాలి. సినిమా మొదటి నుంచి చివరి కొనసాగే బలమైన ఎమోషన్స్ చాలా బావుంటాయి. అలాగే ఒకరి కథకు మరొకరి కథ లింకప్ అయ్యి ఉన్న విధానం మెప్పిస్తుంది. అలాగే ఈ చిత్రం ద్వారా వారు అందించిన సందేశం కూడా బాగా వచ్చింది అని చెప్పాలి.

ఇక నటీనటుల విషయానికి వస్తే ఇప్పటికే ఎన్నో చిత్రాల్లో నటించిన కృష్ణ చైతన్య ఈ చిత్రంలో ఓ రాజకీయ నాయకునిగా ఎలా కనిపించాలో అలా కనిపించి ఆకట్టుకున్నాడు. అలాగే అతని నటన మరో మేజర్ హైలైట్ అని చెప్పొచ్చు. అలాగే సీనియర్ నటులు శుభలేఖ సుధాకర్ మరియు ఈశ్వరి రావ్ తమ ఎమోషనల్స్ పెర్ఫామెన్స్ ద్వారా తమ పాత్రలకు సంపూర్ణ న్యాయం చేకూర్చారు.

అలాగే యువ నటి ఈస్తర్ కూడా తన రోల్ ను చాలా క్లీన్ గా చేసింది. ఇక నైనా గంగూలీ విషయానికి వస్తే ఇప్పటి వరకు గ్లామరస్ రోల్స్ లో కనిపించిన ఈమె ఈ చిత్రం ద్వారా ఒక సరికొత్తగా ఆమెను ఆవిష్కరించుకుంది అని చెప్పాలి. అలా తన పెర్ఫామెన్స్ తో నైనా మరో హైలైట్ అయ్యిందని చెప్పాలి. అలాగే నిర్మాణ విలువలు చాలా బాగున్నాయి. సినిమాలో చూపించిన ప్రతీ లొకేషన్స్ లో కెమెరా పనితనం చాలా బాగుంది.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ :

ఈ చిత్రం ఫస్ట్ హాఫ్ అంతా బాగా కొనసాగుతూ వస్తుంది. కానీ సెకండాఫ్ విషయానికి వస్తే అలా కాస్త నెమ్మదించిన అభిప్రాయం కలుగుతుంది. అలాగే కొన్ని ఎమోషనల్ సన్నివేశాల్లో అయితే చాలా వరకు ఆడియన్స్ ఊహించగలిగిన విధంగానే ఉంటాయి.

అలాగే ప్రభుత్వంలో ఉండే అధికారులు తమ పవర్ ను ప్రజలకు కాకుండా తమ అవసరాలకు ఎలా వినియోగించుకుంటున్నారు అన్నది కూడా ఇంకా బలంగా ఎలివేట్ అయ్యి ఉంటే ఇంకా ఇంపాక్ట్ ఉండేది.

అలాగే దర్శకుడు ప్రతీ ఒక్కరి కథలను బాగా చూపించి నడిపించారు కానీ కథానుసారం వచ్చే ట్విస్టుల విషయంలో మరింత జాగ్రత్త వహించి ఉండాల్సింది. ఇవన్నీ కాస్త నిరాశ కలిగించే అంశాలు అని చెప్పొచ్చు.

సాంకేతిక విభాగం :

మొట్టమొదటిగా ఈ సినిమా క్రెడిట్ దర్శకుడు తేజ మర్ని కి ఇవ్వాలి. తాను ఎంచుకున్న క్యాస్టింగ్ లో ప్రతీ ఒక్కరి నుంచి ది బెస్ట్ పెర్ఫామెన్స్ ను రాబట్టి చిత్రానికి ప్రధాన బలంగా నిలిపాడు. అలాగే ఎమోషన్స్ ను క్యారీ చేసి విషయంలో అయితే మరిన్ని మార్కులు వెయ్యొచ్చు. అలాగే పాటలు మరియు కథానుసారం రాసుకున్న డైలాగ్స్ అర్ధవంతంగా బాగున్నాయి.

ఇంతకు ముందు చెప్పుకున్నట్టుగానే ఈ చిత్రంలో నిర్మాణ విలువలు చాలా బాగున్నాయి. అలాగే కెమెరా పనితనం కానీ బ్యాక్గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ ఆడియన్స్ ను ఖచ్చితంగా మెప్పిస్తాయి. అలాగే పొలిటికల్ గా దర్శకుడు కథనం పరంగా చెప్పిన కొన్ని అంశాలు కూడా బాగుంటాయి.

ఇక మొత్తంగా చూసుకున్నట్టయతే జోహార్ చిత్రం ఆకట్టుకునే ఒక ఎమోషనల్ డ్రామా అని చెప్పాలి. తమ పర్సనల్ ఎజెండా కొరకు ప్రజల సమస్యలను గాలికొదిలేసి కొందరు రాజకీయ పార్టీలపై డైరెక్ట్ గా సెటైర్ తో చూపించారు. అలాగే దర్శకుడు ఎన్నుకున్న కాన్సెప్ట్ కానీ చూపించిన కథలు కానీ ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి. కానీ కాస్త నెమ్మదిగా సాగే సెకండాఫ్ కొంచెం ముందు గానే ఊహించగలిగే కొన్ని సన్నివేశాలు అలాగే ఇచ్చే ఓ సామాజిక సందేశం ద్వారా డీసెంట్ గా నడిచే ఈ చిత్రాన్ని ఓసారి చూడొచ్చు.

While we all agree that governments are increasingly indulging in projects that bring political gains and spending money on the unproductive schemes, the point needs more mature narration.

All in all, “Johar” is a preachy political satire with little redeeming points.

On the whole, Johaar is an emotional drama that has a superb premise. It is a direct satire on various political parties as to how they ignore public welfare and think of only their personal agendas. This concept has nicely been set through various stories in the film. Barring the slow pace and a bit predictable second half, this film ends as a decent watch for its good message and solid performances.

While Teja Marni relies on the audience to understand the proceedings without much spoon-feeding, even if some dialogues do get explanatory, the climax which features Rohini seems almost unnecessary in an otherwise subtle tale, especially when it features a long speech on her part. But barring minimal flaws, Teja Marni’s Johaar is a raw and bold statement on the political scenario in the country today. And that makes it worth a watch!

But truth has many sides. Legacy monuments generate revenue, they help build a strong local economy. Our films, including 'Johar', shed tears for farmers. But do they ever ask why the lakhs of crores that have been spent by different States on farm loan waivers haven't solved farm issues? Never! If anything, farm loan waivers have caused more misery indirectly than any larger-than-life statue. Think about it!

This movie is from the director of "Angadi Theru" and had lots of expectation. But it didn't fulfill the expectation as the movie wasn't keeping you busy. It was very slow movie and makes you bore.
