Educators rely on the discovery of new knowledge of teaching practices and frameworks to improve and evolve education for trainees. An important consideration that should be made when embarking on a career conducting education research is finding a scholarship niche. An education researcher can then develop the conceptual framework that describes the state of knowledge, realize gaps in understanding of the phenomenon or problem, and develop an outline for the methodological underpinnings of the research project. In response to Ernest Boyer’s seminal report, Priorities of the Professoriate , research was conducted about the criteria and decision processes for grants and publications. Six standards known as the Glassick’s criteria provide a tangible measure by which educators can assess the quality and structure of their education research—clear goals, adequate preparation, appropriate methods, significant results, effective presentation, and reflective critique. Ultimately, the promise of education research is to realize advances and innovation for learners that are informed by evidence-based knowledge and practices.

Principles of Research in Education
Principles of Research in Education is written principally but not exclusively for Education students and lecturers. Both novices and specialists in education research, economics, sociology, psychology, management business and social research in general will find it very useful. The booklet is presented in a way that it will generate interest and motivate the learning of appropriate principles of research methods, particularly as it applies to education. The booklet is simply an attempt by the authors to help researchers and lecturers see the end of research from the beginning. It has been written with particular consideration for those who may undertake research in the context of limited library resources or interaction with other researchers, as is commonly the case in Africa. It is designed to be used as an introductory text and as a focused guide for students who are beginning to develop and conceptualize their topics, proposal and final research reports, while supervisor of research will also find some hints useful in the booklet about how best to assess their students’ research work. It is the hope of the authors that the handbook will form a necessary and useful tool for students (and other researchers) working on their research projects for the first time and those that needed to update their knowledge about research methods. It would not be out of place for the authors to express their sincere thanks to all those who have been instrumental, openly or covertly, in the realization of this handbook. There are friends and colleagues, without whose varied nature of support, this guide would not have been written. We are particularly indebted to Mrs. Titilayo Soji –Oni, Dr. TPL A. A. The articles touch educational issues such as guidance and counselling in schools, school improvement strategies stressing on the need for stakeholders in schools to realize development plans and principals’ Instructional Quality Assurance Role for quality education. Further focus lies on business management with highlights on the aspect of resistance to change in the context of stock exchange security industry. Social issues are also examined in relation to the benefits of Home Based Care of HIV and AIDS patients. We at ARJESS hope that the covered articles will go a long way towards informing the development of sound strategies not only in education but also in business and social spheres. We are approaching the final quarter of the year and how wonderful it has been so far in the publishing arena. In the field of education, it is time to sit back and reflect on where we are and where we want to go in terms of contributing to knowledge, well aware that the field of research continues to grow by leaps and bounds. For us at the African Research Journal of Education and Social Sciences, our message is very clear, whether a student of research, faculty member, practitioner or a scholar – "publish or perish!" In this maiden release, Volume 2014, the journal specifically focuses on issues that impact the fields of Education and Social Sciences in Africa’s context. The volume covers the aspects of academic institutions’ growth, especially in the context of public universities and also highlights the role of head teachers as human resource managers in primary level education. Moreover, the volume looks at the social issues concerning the youths in the 21st century. At ARJESS, we cannot thank all our readers, promoters and supporters enough for the past decade we have been in existence. A number of psychosocial variables determine secondary school students' academic performance. These include interest, attitude, aptitude, perception, motivation, study habits, self-concept and so on. This study investigated the relationship between students' attitude to Mathematics, perception of teacher effectiveness, achievement motivation and performance in Mathematics using structural equation model (SEM). Ex post facto research design was adopted and the multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 800 secondary school students from Ogbomoso in Oyo State, Nigeria. Students' Attitude to Mathematics Scale (SAMS , r=0.64), Students' Assessment of Teacher Effectiveness (SATE, r=0.84), Academic Need Achievement Scale (ANAS, r=0.77) and Students' Mathematics Achievement Test (SMAT, r=0.82) were used for data collection. Descriptive and multiple regression statistics were used to analyse the data. The results revealed that achievement motivation had larger relative contribution of 25% to academic performance in Mathematics, followed by attitude with 11%. Achievement motivation and attitude were significantly correlated with students' academic performance in Mathematics. However, perception of teacher effectiveness did not significantly correlate with students' performance in Mathematics. Goodness-of-fit indices revealed that the data collected fitted the hypothesized model (x2 /df=3.36, p<0.05). The model also accounted for 15% of total variance in the academic performance of students in Mathematics. Thus, teachers should structure their teaching methods and instructional resources to meet divergent psychosocial needs of secondary school students to enhance better performance in Mathematics as well as clarify mathematical terms and vocabularies, use simple language for their instructions with relevant illustrations and consider differing achievement needs of the students in their activities
