5 Tips for Personal Statements

So you are ready (or you’ve been told) to begin writing your personal statement but where do you even start? Here are some top tips to get you heading in the right direction with it:

  • It is best to draft your personal statement in either Unifrog or a Google doc. Not only does this makes it much easier to share with your tutor/mentor, it does not time you out like the actual UCAS form does. Unifrog also, very kindly, suggests what to include in each section.
  • Remember you can enter up to 4000 characters (including spaces) or 47 lines of text (including blank lines between paragraphs), whichever comes first. This means for many of you fantastic individuals, you will need to be selective e.g. you can potentially miss out the fact that you once babysit your cousin’s kids when you were 14. You can also save a surprising amount of space by getting rid of ‘nothing-words’ like ‘particularly’ and ‘really’ and ‘very’ and ‘relatively’, and your Statement will have more impact too. It is essential to keep the language simple and direct.
  • Check out what the university website says about the courses you are applying for, and look at the course entry profiles you’ll find on the UCAS website. What you say on the form about your reasons for choosing the course and about your interests, skills and experience, must match up to the criteria admissions tutors use to assess your application.
  • A personal statement is just that, ‘personal’. This means that not everyone’s will, or should, look the same or even follow the same format. Generally though, as a rule of thumb, the statement will begin with you explaining why you have chosen that particular course. This tends to be the most difficult section to explain. Even if it follows directly from one of your A Levels/Level 3s, you should explain why you want to spend three more years studying that subject. Read the university course descriptions carefully, and if it’s a subject you haven’t studied before you definitely need to show you know what’s involved.
  • Choose your layout wisely. Once you’ve explained why you want to do the course, you need to think about what is the next most relevant point you should be making. For some people this may be beginning to discuss specific skills gained from your A Levels/Level 3s; for others you may have gained invaluable work experience that has strong links to the course so it might make more sense that you discuss this before your subjects come into it e.g. you are applying for Nursing and have undertook a lengthy NHS Volunteering Programme.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

a picture of a group of students reading a book

All boys at King Edward’s School study the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in the Sixth Form, which provides a challenging, rigorous and broad education.

The qualification is taught in over 3,200 schools in almost 150 countries, and 140 of these those schools are in the UK.

The IB is much more than a pathway to university; it is designed to provide an intellectual challenge and prepare students for living and working in a rapidly changing world.

An overview of the qualification

The IB Diploma is an internationally recognised qualification, which embodies a holistic educational philosophy. It is designed to give students a rigorous pre-university education that develops expert knowledge in the subjects that most interest them, whilst developing broad skills that are attractive to employers.

Indeed, t he value of the IB Diploma is well-recognised by universities and employers alike and o ur students consistently receive offers from the very best universities , with around 90% each year being accepted by their first choice.

Sixth Formers study six subjects in total, drawn from six groups:

  • Language and Literature
  • Language Acquisition
  • Individuals and Societies
  • Mathematics

In addition to these subjects, students are required to complete three Core elements:

  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
  • An Extended Essay
  • Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) programme, which recognises co-curricular activity.

The maximum score for the IB Diploma is 45 points, with six subjects graded out of seven points and an additional three points for the Core elements of TOK and the Extended Essay.

The CAS element is a passing requirement of the Diploma, but is not examined.

The Value of the IB

Explore why the IB Diploma stands out as a valuable educational choice for our Sixth Form students:

Fundamental to King Edward’s School is the overall experience boys gain from being here, not just what they achieve academically. In addition to maintaining the highest of academic standards, the IB encourages co-curricular activity and the pursuit of a diverse range of interests, and prepares pupils for an increasingly globalised, rapidly changing world.

The IB Learner Profile helps develop core skills and aptitudes from critical inquiry and depth of knowledge to reflection and communication.

Studying six subjects in the Sixth Form enables boys to experience a breadth of study and to keep their options open.

The IB encourages independent learning across all areas, which provides excellent preparation for university study. In particular, the Extended Essay familiarises students with the kind of independent research and writing skills expected at university level.

IB is accepted by the best universities for the best courses. There is growing evidence that universities like IB candidates because they have broad knowledge and can demonstrate independence of study. IB also allows much greater differentiation between good candidates and enables pupils to maintain a range of skills that both universities and employers look for.

Meet the IB Director

Mr Petrie has been teaching History since 2010 and joined King Edward’s School as a Teacher of History in 2016. Since that time, he has taken roles as Head of Vardy, CAS coordinator and most recently the IB Director. He studied History at the University of Leicester, dedicating much of his research to early modern British History.

Prior to teaching at King Edward’s School, Mr Petrie taught at an international school in Abu Dhabi between 2013 and 2016 which was his first experience of delivering the International Baccalaureate Diploma. In addition to teaching History, Mr Petrie enjoys delivering Theory of Knowledge lessons and developing Service learning opportunities for students. Outside of school, Mr Petrie tries to travel as much as possible and is a season ticket holder at the Leicester Tigers.

Equality Statement and Objectives

King edward vi foundation public sector equality duty (psed) statement.

This statement sets out the King Edward VI’s Foundation’s commitment to the PSED and the expectations of each of our Academies, our Independent Schools, and the Foundation Office to our pupils, our staff and to our communities to encourage the development of a strong foundation of equality, diversity, and inclusion practice.

Each school will meet its obligations under the PSED by having due regard when making any decisions or implementing policies to the need to:

Eliminate discrimination and other conduct that is prohibited by the Equality Act 2010

Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it

Foster good relations across all characteristics – between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it

At King Edward VI Five Ways School:

We will seek to eliminate discrimination and other unwarranted conduct that is prohibited by the Equality Act by:

Maintaining robust policies

Regular training on the Equality Act 2010

Discussing responsibilities at staff and Governor meetings

We seek to advance equality of opportunity by:

Removing or minimising disadvantages suffered by people which are connected to a particular characteristic

Taking steps to meet different needs of people who have a protected characteristic

Encouraging participation when it is disproportionately low

We seek to foster good relations by:

Including aspects within the curriculum which promote tolerance and friendship

Ensuring awareness of behaviour and anti-bullying policies

Engaging with the local communities

2. Responsibilities

Our schools make themselves as accessible as possible to all pupils, whatever their background or circumstances, by offering an environment that motivates staff and students and promotes productivity, excellence, and sustainable growth.

We are opposed to all forms of prejudice and have a zero-tolerance approach.

Every person in our organisation is responsible for creating and sustaining an inclusive environment based on mutual respect and is given the tools and help to do this. No one, including any pupil, prospective pupil, or other member of the school community will be discriminated against, harassed or victimised because of :

Gender reassignment

Marital or civil partner status

Pregnancy or maternity

Religion or belief

Sexual orientation

All schools will have clearly defined procedures for addressing incidents of a potentially prejudicial, bullying, or discriminatory nature and to ensure that these procedures are available for staff and pupils to obtain.

3. Guiding Principles

In fulfilling the legal obligations referred to above we are also guided by the following nine principles:

Principle 1: All learners are of equal worth

Principle 2: We recognise and respect difference

Principle 3: We foster positive attitudes and relationships, and a shared sense of cohesion and belonging

Principle 4:  We observe good equalities practice in staff recruitment, retention, and development

Principle 5:  We aim to reduce and remove inequalities and barriers

Principle 6: We consult widely

Principle 7: Society should benefit

Principle 8: We base our policies and practice on sound evidence

Principle 9: We work towards measurable equality objectives

4. School’s Accountabilities and Objectives

All schools will take responsibility to appropriately engage with equality diversity and inclusion legislation/statutory duties and responsibilities to ensure that the guiding principles listed above are

In line with our obligations of the PSED, the Foundation will create and publish specific and measurable equality objectives, based on the feedback we have received from schools and pupils and consultations and any evidence that we have collected and published. Schools will also publish their own equality objectives in line with the PSED for their schools.

The objectives that we identify take into account national and local priorities and issues as appropriate.

We keep our equality objectives under review and report annually on progress towards achieving them.

At King Edward VI Five Ways our school’s objectives are as follows:

To promote equality, diversity and inclusion actions across our staff body. This will be achieved through training for staff to eliminate any unconscious bias in the recruitment process and further CPD on diversity, equality and inclusion, to be completed before the beginning of the next academic year.

To enable students to understand, appreciate and respect difference in the world and its people, celebrating the things we share in common across cultural, religious, ethnic and socio-economic communities.  This will be achieved through:

The development of new student societies, inviting open membership, to better represent our diversity and to support all to thrive and flourish.

The development in the use of form time, the ‘Learning for Life’ curriculum and the Well-Being programme to facilitate smaller and safer group forums for discussion of inclusion issues in our school.

The development of a ‘Global Voices’ programme for the school year that encourages and supports the sharing of personal stories, hosts inspirational leaders and figures from a variety of communities, and promotes the knowledge and understanding of our diverse cultures, history and heritage through assemblies, events and a celebration of food.

A full review of the curriculum, supported and informed by leading academics from local universities, with the aim of promoting Five Ways as a diverse and inclusive school.

To develop a workforce that reflects the diversity of our community at all levels within the organisation

To further develop student and staff wellbeing and promote positive mental health

English Personal Statement Example 1 Ever since I have had the ability to understand it, I have been fascinated by the English language. As a child, I would either be writing, reading or telling stories and ever sine then, have read a wide variety of both fiction and non-fiction texts from a variety of genres and eras...

Linguistics Personal Statement Example 1 My most memorable Christmas came with a parcel of Harry Potter audio books and this was where my quest to understanding language began. The moment Stephen Fry started to narrate chapter one, I fell in love with words and all they could achieve...

Law and Politics Personal Statement Example 1 Laws, in my opinion, are the cogs in the machinery of society; they are guidelines and deterrents that are fundamentally essential for humanity to function. Law is the combined public conscience that tells us right from wrong...

Politics & International Relations Personal Statement Example 2 It was November 1989. My parents were rattling their keys in the main square of Bratislava with other Czechoslovak youngsters asking for the democracy that was denied by the Communist regime. They raised me in an environment, where appreciation of freedom, expressing my thoughts and being an active citizen have been essential...

History Personal Statement Example 5 As the descendant of an Auschwitz survivor, my family history allows me to understand the influences that the Second World War has had on people's families and the victims of the Nazi regime in occupied Poland...

Economics and Politics Personal Statement Example 1 "I killed the bank": the last words of Andrew Jackson, former president of the US, after he had vetoed to renew the charter and withdraw all federal deposits from banks causing them to bust. Real money was backed with gold shortly after, causing the greatest economic boom in history for the US where no income tax was implemented...

History continues to shape our contemporary world and my opinions have been formed from an intellectual curiosity about the resonances between the past and the present...

As a scientist, I adore observing the unknown, analysing the known and making decisions accordingly...
