9 best and must-watch Malayalam movies of 2023 (so far) with the most compelling narratives that can't be missed
By Priyadarshini Patwa
The year 2023 has been a mixed bag for Malayalam movies, offering a blend of brilliance and some box office misses. While the industry churned out some innovative and thought-provoking films, not all had the potential to bring audiences to the theatres. Only a handful of movies have managed to strike gold at the box office, but the one that did indeed claimed the blockbuster status.
The horror-comedy Romancham emerged as the year's unexpected hit, and Tovino Thomas’s survival drama 2018 etched its name as the highest-grossing Malayalam film in history. Some of the Malayalam movies this year have taken us on remarkable journeys, stretching the boundaries of artistic expression. In no particular order, here are the 7 best Malayalam movies for 2023 that have left an indelible mark on critics and viewers and deserve a spot on your must-watch list.
9 Best and must-watch Malayalam movies of 2023 (so far) with the most compelling narratives that can't be missed
Director Saheed Arafath once again brings a compelling story with Thankam that can’t be missed. Known for his work in films like Maheshinte Prathikaaram and Kumbalangi Nights, Arafath does a brilliant job and excels in presenting a compelling murder mystery . Set in the Gold Capital of India, Thrissur, the film explores the complexities of the gold trade, its culture, pleasures, and risks. When a massive consignment of gold disappears, a series of mysterious events unfold, including a shocking death. The movie treats us to a captivating police procedural rooted firmly in reality and features Vineeth Sreenivasan, Biju Menon and Girish Kulkarni.
When conveying a message through a film, one can go out loud and clear or make the story say it all gently. Debut director Shruthi Sharanyam chooses the subtler path, conveying the message gracefully without the film's perspective. In Shruthi Sharanyam's film, the narratives of six finely crafted characters serve as a sensitive exploration of women's challenges regarding body image and a delicate, empathetic portrayal of homosexuality.
With a stellar IMDb rating of 7.7, Iratta delves into the bond between two brothers, childhood trauma, and sibling rivalry. Joju George proves his acting talent once again, breathing life into every role. This suspenseful thriller doesn't manipulate your feelings towards the characters, which is a refreshing departure from the ongoing cinema trend. Instead, it's one of those films that embraces every character, immersing you, leaving you breathless, and evoking a deep sense of emotion. Undoubtedly, Iratta is one of the brilliant Malayalam movies of 2023 that pushes boundaries.
By Sanjana Ray
By Gaurav Sonavane
Sharafudheen and Bhavana reunite as childhood sweethearts in this heartwarming film. Its straightforward narrative gains depth through the characters' asides, creating a feel-good atmosphere with soul-soothing music and restrained drama.
A horror film that doubles as a comedy? Romancham is a movie that ingeniously melds these two genres into a delightful concoction. There are no over-the-top antics or nonsensical humour; the film is genuinely and consistently hilarious. What's more intriguing is that its humour draws inspiration from real-life incidents. Director Jithu Madhavan’s movie revolves around seven bachelors who use a spirited game of Ouija. Things take a hilariously unexpected turn when they unwittingly summon a mischievous spirit and decide to roll with the supernatural chaos.
Talk about the best Malayalam movies , and it is impossible not to mention Mammootty’s film in the list. In a world where the system collapses, an upright cop is pushed beyond the boundaries of the law. The plot of the movie intricately weaves a narrative that spans past and present, revealing the motivations driving the protagonist's actions. While the story sounds engaging, the film lacks substance. However, despite the film's shortcomings, Mammoothy’s charisma and style inject moments of excitement and keep you engaged.
Adding to the list of best Malayalam movies of 2023 is my favourite, Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum, starring Fahadh Faasil. The actor, who wears chameleon skin, entertains us to the fullest. The film revolves around a young man managing an Ayurveda pharmacy in Mumbai who agrees to escort his landlord's mother from Kerala to Mumbai. Little does he know that a peculiar request will launch him on a voyage of self-discovery and adventure. The movie is a heartwarming crowd-pleaser that elicits smiles and nurtures empathy. If you like Faasil’s performance, this one is a good watch.
This survival drama was expected to be an emotional story of triumph against all odds. But it not only met those expectations but surpassed many others. For those who experienced the 2018 Kerala Floods, this film is more than just a movie—it's their story, their truth, their life saga. With vital technical aspects, a well-paced plot, and a thoughtful screenplay, the film is a cinematic experience that truly belongs to the people of Kerala and gives you all sorts of emotions at once.
Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam is a captivating film starring Mammootty as James. After a pilgrimage to Velankanni, James undergoes a mysterious transformation, waking up as Sundaram, a Tamilian man. His family and others watch in amazement and confusion as James navigates the complexities of living someone else's life. The film beautifully explores themes of identity, connection and power of human bonds. Suppose you have watched Lijo Jose Pellissery's movies in the past. In that case, he prioritises characters, intense emotions, and surreal experiences over conventional storytelling . His films are all about creating an atmosphere and setting a mood.

‘Pachuvum Athbhutha Vilakkum’: Fahadh Faasil impresses in Akhil Sathyan debut
In his directorial debut, ‘Pachuvum Athbhutha Vilakkum’, Akhil Sathyan has played it safe following the footsteps of his father and brother to make a feel-good movie which has almost all the elements to hook the theatre-going Malayali families. It, once again, works too.
The film draws largely from the Sathyan Anthikad legacy – a middle class Malayali hero, his struggles, support system and survival wrapped in humour and laced with emotions – and is presented in a package that looks new and colourful, just like Anoop Sathyan’s 2020 debut ‘Varane Avashyamund’.
'Aavesham': Fahadh Faasil reigns supreme as 'Ranga' in Jithu Madhavan's comedy-entertainer | Movie Review
'Varshangalkku Sesham' Review | A bittersweet tribute to tinsel town’s oddball residents
‘Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum’ has a lovable hero, his perfect parents, a life lesson he learned from a mistake in the past, and his determination to grow. Then there’s a feisty old woman, her filthy rich son and a helpless girl. The plot, after floating around the life of the protagonist in Mumbai and Kerala offering some mirthful moments, gets into serious business as the young man and the old woman meet each other. The incidents following a train journey the two take from Kerala to Mumbai make the rest of the film. The setting then is shifted to Goa where the bachelor hero meets the bold-looking heroin who also has a share of problems -- a personal tragedy and a toxic relationship.
Fahadh Faasil plays Prashanth (Pachu), who runs an ayurveda clinic in Mumbai, with ease. The virtues and vulnerabilities of Pachu are safe with the actor in Fahadh. He has played similar characters in the past and his mannerisms, timeliness and dialogue delivery were just enough to conquer the viewers yet again. He gets a deadly combo in the film with Althaf Salim who plays Pachu’s assistant at the pharmacy. Althaf’s antics, reactions and one-liners made his character the best when it comes to comedy in the film. The sequences involving Mukesh, Innocent and Srikant Murali looked straight out of the Anthikad filmdom, for all their effectiveness and faults.
The surprise among the performances comes from Viji Venkatesh, who plunged into acting after a long career in cancer patient care. Viji essays the role of Ummachi, the sophisticated, multilingual and kind-hearted Muslim woman whose strange behaviour shifts the pace of the narrative. Viji has convincingly played the role, delivering her transformations with elan. Anjana Jayaprakash pulls out an impressive performance as Hamsadhwani, a designer working in Goa. The interactions between Pachu and Hamsadhwani form fun, delight and drama. Dhwani Rajesh could portray the innocence and helplessness of the teen girl around who the plot is centred while watching Avyukt Menon as the cute and funny little boy on his way back to Mumbai from Sabarimala was a joy.
The setting in Goa gave the film a fresh feeling. The director explored Goa, beyond its beaches, and turned his camera into the less-noticed interiors and ghettos of the coastal state. The film, despite its humorous progress, could have been trimmed here and there. The debut director, being the editor, perhaps did not want to leave anything out.
It has a predictable climax, but the progress until there is engaging. The background score has some musical brilliance, though the songs don’t leave any impression.

This year, Malayalam movies have stood out for their engaging stories and strong characters. The Malayalam film industry, fondly known as Mollywood , has left an indelible mark on cinema enthusiasts with its diverse narratives and compelling characters. Released on June 23, 2023, the film features Fahadh Faasil and Aparna Balamurali in leading roles. The narrative unfolds in a dual timeline, with Fahadh’s character, Avinash, waking up with amnesia, setting the stage for a psychological thriller that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. Pawan Kumar’s trademark dual timeline technique also adds an extra layer of mystery as past and present events merge, creating a compelling movie experience.
4. Kathal – The Core
Kaathal – The Core, is directed by Jeo Baby and features Mammootty and Jyothika. It takes center stage as a family drama with unexpected twists. The film explores themes of acceptance, struggle with sexuality, and familial relationships.
2018, directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, is a survival drama based on the severe floods that ravaged Kerala in 2018. The film, released in 2023, features a stellar ensemble cast, including Tovino Thomas, Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Narain, and Lal. The Malayalam movie has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 96th Academy Awards. The narrative weaves together multiple stories, showcasing the heroism of individuals during the catastrophic floods. The film skillfully intertwines characters and events, portraying the resilience of the community in the face of tragedy.

Malayalam cinema thrived in Q1 2024, grossing a total of over Rs 670 crore globally
Three films released in the first quarter of 2024 — manjummel boys, aadujeevitham and premalu — made it to the list of highest-grossing malayalam films of all time, ranking 1st, 4th and 5th, respectively..
In 2023, Malayalam cinema faced profound disappointment. Frankly speaking, to say it was merely disappointing would be an understatement. By the year’s end, the industry found itself rapidly descending into a downward trend, with the possibility of hitting rock bottom looming closer and no sign of improvement in sight.
Despite the success of films like 2018 and RDX , the industry struggled to counteract the overall decline. Shockingly, only a handful of films managed to even protect producers from facing significant losses. Thus, the producers’ association said that the industry incurred a collective loss of about Rs 300 crore, Times of India reported, leaving a bleak and concerning outlook. Even in terms of content quality, the situation appeared grim as exceptional films were rare occurrences, with the majority leaving audiences thoroughly disappointed.
However, unlike in 2023, Malayalam cinema made a grand entrance into 2024 as the first film to be released, Aattam (The Play) , garnered widespread acclaim and sparked discussions. While Aattam didn’t achieve significant box office success initially, it became a focal point of conversation. Its digital premiere further enhanced the movie’s acclaim, multiplying its glory manifold. To be honest, it’s doubtful if any film from the previous year could match the overall excellence of Malayalam cinema’s first film of 2024.
In contrast to 2023, when the industry had to wait until the third week of January for an outstanding movie — Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Mammootty -starrer Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam — Aattam gave Malayalam cinema a strong start. Similarly, there was no need to wait until February, as was the case last year with Jithu Madhavan’s horror comedy Romancham , for Malayalam cinema to witness its first major hit. Just six days after Aattam, Midhun Manuel Thomas’ crime thriller Abraham Ozler arrived, providing a strong shot in the arm to the industry. Despite being an average film, Ozler attracted audiences to cinemas, grossing approximately Rs 40.7 crore worldwide, thanks to the presence of a slightly revamped Jayaram and a surprise cameo appearance by Mammootty . With Ozler revitalising the market and box office, anticipation grew for the release of one of the year’s most eagerly awaited Indian films — Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Mohanlal -starrer Malaikottai Vaaliban . Thence, the backlash Kamal’s Shine Tom Chacko film Vivekanandan Viralanu received quickly faded away.
However, the industry’s hopes for setting a new record by producing an all-time highest-grossing movie were dashed when Malaikottai Vaaliban failed to impress audiences and garnered polarised reviews. The most appalling point here was that not only did the film fail to meet expectations but also the increasingly negative word-of-mouth greatly impacted its earnings, resulting in Vaaliban becoming a box office bomb . This disappointment, particularly given the film’s high-profile cast and director, left moviegoers disheartened, leading many to anticipate another year plagued by box office letdowns, especially since a total of 17 movies hit the screens in January, as against 15 in the same month last year, and other small projects did not turn any heads.
The first week of February saw the release of seven more movies, and needless to say, not a single one made any waves. While all eyes were set on Bhoothakalam director Rahul Sadasivan’s much-hyped period horror film Bramayugam , starring Mammootty and scheduled for release on February 15, two major movies hit the screens in the second week of the month — Darwin Kuriakose and Tovino Thomas’ Anweshippin Kandethum and Girish AD’s Naslen and Mamitha Baiju-starrer Premalu . With Ozler fading and Vaaliban failing to attract audiences, both new releases received a strong opening, particularly Anweshippin Kandethum, benefiting from Tovino’s popularity. Theatre owners, eager to replace Vaaliban, jumped over these two films, especially the Tovino-starrer, recognising their buzz. However, the outcome surprised many, as Premalu received more acclaim for its simple yet impactful storytelling, humour and performances, while Anweshippin failed to leave a lasting impression. Nonetheless, Tovino’s film emerged as a super hit, grossing Rs 40 crore globally against its reported budget of Rs 8 crore. Meanwhile, Premalu made waves nationwide, capturing the hearts of audiences in every region, besides garnering attention from ace filmmaker SS Rajamouli and Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu . Rajamouli’s son Karthikeya acquired the Telugu distribution rights for Premalu, which recently concluded its theatrical run after amassing over Rs 130 crore worldwide, thus becoming the first blockbuster of the year.
While in 2023, Malayalam cinema experienced a wait of nearly three months after Romancham for another hit, or essentially five months for its first blockbuster, in 2024, the Malayalam industry saw another significant success in February itself, the fourth one in two months, with Mammootty’s Bramayugam. For the actor, who had been making jaws drop with his remarkable film choices and performances, including last year’s Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, Kannur Squad and Kaathal – The Core , Bramayugam added to his list of achievements. The black-and-white period folk horror became a national talking point , with audiences and critics alike discussing its merits, leading to substantial success with a global gross of about Rs 85 crore. With Premalu, Anweshippin and Bramayugam enjoying a tremendous run and sharing screens amongst themselves, albeit with some difficulty due to a limited number of theatres, duds like Thundu went unnoticed.
However, the industry’s lack of strategic planning regarding release dates, combined with the influx of films, complicated matters as a week following Bramayugam’s release, two more films — Don Palathara’s Family and Chidambaram’s Manjummel Boys — hit theatres. While Family aimed to carve out a niche audience, Manjummel Boys capitalised on composer Sushin Shyam’s prediction of the movie becoming a trendsetter and garnered attention and immediate commercial success due to positive reviews from all quarters.
At the same time, the lack of planning worked surprisingly in favour of the Malayalam industry afterwards, as Premalu, Bramayugam and Manjummel Boys took over screens, overshadowing Anweshippin Kandethum and prompting its early debut on OTT platforms. The trio, together, attracted a significant number of audiences into cinema halls nationwide. The challenging times faced by most industries, with few non-Malayalam films making a significant impact, presented our industry with an unprecedented opportunity. The quality of these movies and the fact that they all belonged to different genres, sharing absolutely no similarities, unlike the films produced by Malayalam’s counterparts, helped them maintain their momentum. Following the success of Premalu, Manjummel Boys also made a mark in the Tamil and Telugu markets, impressing local audiences too, particularly due to the emotional depth of Malayalam films in general.
In March, as school exams season began, there were no major releases. While several smaller films tried to gain traction, the Premalu-Bramayugam-Manjummel Boys trio continued its successful run, attracting viewers, mostly repeat watchers, even after the initial buzz faded. At the same time, assuming that there’s no ‘competition’ in sight, Dileep attempted to swoop in with his crime thriller Thankamani . However, due to its abysmal quality and the actor’s subpar performance, the film became a box office bomb, giving the former trio better prospects. Meanwhile, Anchakkallakokkan and Oru Sarkar Ulpannam received some praise but failed to perform well at the box office.
After the massive failure of Thankamani, attention turned to the release of Blessy’s long-awaited film Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life), starring Prithviraj Sukumaran . With extensive promotional efforts and high anticipation as it was based on a beloved best-selling novel , the film opened to a domestic nett collection of Rs 7.6 crore, surpassing recent blockbusters. With just two weeks before Eid-Vishu releases, Aadujeevitham, released on March 28, dominated cinemas and recorded a Week 1 nett collection of Rs 47 crore.
Though February and March this year saw the release of 19 and 25 films, respectively, similar to last year’s numbers of 22 and 26 during the same months, three films released in the first quarter of this year — Manjummel Boys, Aadujeevitham and Premalu — made it to the list of highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time, ranking first, fourth and fifth, respectively. According to reports, the cumulative worldwide gross of six Malayalam movies (Abraham Ozler – Rs 40.7 cr, Anweshippin Kandethum – Rs 40 cr, Premalu – Rs 131.3 cr, Bramayugam – Rs 85 cr, Manjummel Boys – Rs 234.55 cr, and Aadujeevitham – Rs 142.65 cr) released in the first quarter of this year is Rs 674.2 crore, as of April 17, marking a successful start for the Malayalam industry.
With the Eid-Vishu releases — Aavesham and Varshangalkku Shesham — also performing well, it’s anticipated that the first half of this year will be highly successful for the industry. Now, let’s hope that amidst this newfound massive success, the Malayalam industry won’t lose its footing or become overwhelmed.
