My grandma taught me a lot – about life, about love, about what it means to be a good person. She was one of the best humans on this earth. She was giving, kind, compassionate. Every decision I make, there is always this underlying question I ask myself, “Would this make my grandma proud?” (Which, to be honest, can be quite the difficult question to answer when making a not-so-smart choice, as we’re wont to do!)

She was always more than a grandma to me, but someone I considered a mentor and a friend.

So, with all this in mind, I wanted to write a post on some of the life lessons my grandma taught me.

1. Family first – always.

My grandma raised six children (five boys! And one perfect angel of a daughter – my mama!). She also helped to raise three more children (a godson and two grandchildren), and in the past three years, has been helping to raise another child (a great-grandchild). My grandma was all about family – she was happiest rocking a baby, she loved big family get-togethers and lavished all her attention on her kids. When I was younger, my brother and I would spend countless entire weekends at her house and she was always so happy to have us there. Grandma taught me the importance of family.

2. The most important relationship you’ll have in life is your relationship with God.

My grandma was a devout Christian and believed in God with her full heart. Her belief in God was inspirational because she was one of those people who had a real relationship with Jesus. She lived and breathed her faith. She was one of those people who could pull out a Bible verse from her head to provide comfort for anything someone was going through. She was the one who taught me about the Bible, about Noah and Abraham and Jonah and Paul. She was the one who taught me to pray, and while it breaks my heart that I’ll never again be comforted by her prayers for me again, I’m so grateful I was the recipient of them for so many years, especially the ones I never heard. Grandma taught me about the comfort that is believing in something bigger than yourself. She taught me how important a relationship with God is.

3. A positive attitude will take you far.

When I think of my grandma, I try not to remember the lady she was in the hospital, but I try to remember who she innately was – someone who always had a smile for me, who would always laugh at my jokes (no matter how lame!). She exuded positivity throughout her entire life. Her positive attitude is what helped her through multiple cancer diagnoses, through countless rounds of chemotherapy, through the hard nights and dark days. Grandma taught me to find positivity in the everyday, and that the mind is a powerful instrument in fighting the body.

4. Making people feel loved, appreciated, and special is one of the best gifts you can give to the world.

There’s a quote by Maya Angelou that states, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” My grandma embodied that quote so much. She made people feel good. She made them feel accepted and loved and valued and cherished. Whenever I was around her, my spirits instantly lifted and I felt better about myself and my life. Grandma taught me that everyone is deserving of love.

5. Chocolate is a cure for almost everything.

I definitely have my grandma to thank for my raging sweet tooth. She loved chocolate, baked goods, all sweets. For grandma, problems were solved through a sweet treat. When my mom left my father, my mom, brother, and I all moved in with my grandparents. That period of time was difficult, but my fondest memories of that time were the nights spent around the kitchen table – just my grandma, my mom, and me – drinking hot chocolate and eating something sweet, talking about life and reminiscing on the past. Grandma taught me to love my guilty pleasures and to never apologize for them.

6. Find the humor in all things.

My grandma loved to laugh and she had a lighthearted way about her. She knew how to laugh at herself, and being a mom of six kids, she had to learn how to laugh and roll with the punches. Grandma taught me to find the humor in life. Life can be tragic and heartbreaking, but mostly, it’s fun and crazy and hilarious. Laughter is medicine for the soul.

7. You are not your circumstances.

One of the biggest lessons my grandma taught me was this one. She was never a victim. She never questioned why or blamed God or complained about her cancer diagnosis. And maybe, deep in the corners of her mind or when she was alone with my grandpa, she allowed those thoughts to seep through, but even if she did, she never lived in a victimized way. She was a woman who had cancer, not a cancer patient. Grandma taught me that I am not my anxiety, I am not my weight, I am not my singleness. I am Stephany – and that is perfectly enough.

8. Invest in relationships.

My grandma was never a passive participant in her relationships. She was active and always, always interested in the lives of other people. She kept in touch. I mean, her best friend and her were friends for 48 years! Can you imagine having a friend for that long? My grandma had so many people who came to see her at the end, which is a testament to the impact she had on others. Grandma taught me to take the time to be a friend, no matter how busy life gets.

This may be my favorite line from this post: “Grandma taught me to love your guilty pleasures and to never apologize for them.” AMEN! Also of course to loving sweets as that is something I certainly do 🙂 What a wonderful grandma you had; so many lessons and memories to look back on when you miss her. She’ll be in your heart always!

Something my grandma taught me… how to wrap a package just so; the importance of sending greeting cards; how to iron (yes, iron) pillow cases, napkins and other various household linens (I’m sad to say I don’t do it anymore but it sure was fun when I was little); how to cross stitch (something I rarely do these days but I can pick it up right where I left off!). My grandma is a tough cookie, we haven’t always seen eye to eye, but there are definite lessons and things she’s taught me that I’ll carry with me always.

I love this post! Those of us who had close relationships with our grandparents are so incredibly blessed. I lost my maternal grandma at far too young of an age as I was only in 5th grade. So while I remember her, I didn’t get to spend as much time with her as I have with my paternal grandma. I have been able to spend quite a bit of time with my paternal grandma since she lived just down the road from us. She has taught me the importance of education, she fostered and continues to foster my love of reading, she’s shown me what a healthy and fulfilling marriage should look like (and my parents have shown me that as well), and she’s taught me that you can persevere and survive things that you didn’t think you could as losing my grandpa 6 years ago is something she thought she’d never be able to deal with but she has managed to thrive despite having to learn to do things on her own.

Not gonna lie – this post made me a little teary-eyed and miss my grandma a lot! My grandma was a huge part of my life growing up and like you learned from yours, mine taught me SO much, whether it was on purpose (“Treat others the way you want to be treated”), or just in subtle ways that weren’t meant to be life lessons but stuck with me anyway. (Like making itineraries and keeping track of birthdays.)

I think that even after they’re no longer with us, our grandparents continue to teach us and remind us of the important things in life. Hugs to you, and thank you so much for this post!

What a beautiful tribute to your grandma!! I am also very very close with my maternal grandmother so my heart really is aching for you during this time. I can’t even imagine what you’re going through.

My grandma taught me the value of hard work. She never stops that woman! I am in awe of her crafting, sewing and other hobbies that she has kept up in retirement. Her devotement to her grandchildren always made me feel so so special too!

Learning to appreciate the grandmother who raised me, almost too late

My grandparents and I stood quietly in the elevator as it crawled up to the third floor, where my new dorm room was located. It was move-in day, and to say I was out of my element is an understatement.

I was in a city for the first time. I’d hardly ridden in an elevator before I went away to college, because there wasn’t a need for them in the rural town where I grew up.

Unpacking all morning had left my grandparents unusually tired.

In those few minutes, a girl looked over at me and asked where my parents were.

I felt my throat close at her inquiry.

“We’re her parents,” Grandma snapped.

I swallowed heavily and looked at my feet, avoiding all eye contact. Maybe Grandma hissed at the girl to dissuade any more questions, but I didn’t rationalize it this way. What I heard was exposure, and I felt ashamed at how unusual I was. I was an orphan without any siblings. Family, for me, had always been defined by two aging grandparents.

On campus, my peers appeared to have the family I spent my entire childhood dreaming of. Everywhere I turned I saw families laughing or, more simply, enjoying their time together. My youth was an isolating existence, always, but the feeling was particularly pronounced in the elevator that day. I hated how we were so different.

In hindsight, I shouldn’t have felt so alone. There are more than 2.6 million “grandfamilies,” as we are dubbed, in the United States, according to the U.S. Census Bureau . Sometimes my particular situation is more formally called kinship care. What both labels hide is an inherent sadness at the family’s core. Nearly 6 million children are growing up with their grandparents, and the challenges these families face are steep.

Grandfamilies come together for myriad, but never happy, reasons. We are formed out of necessity or afterthought. Death, drugs, incarceration or — as in my situation — parental abandonment create these family units. And when a family comes together over turmoil, the muck can’t easily be scrubbed away, no matter how okay things appear on the outside.

I grew up dreading the day my grandparents died. They were old, this was my reality. Grandpa died right before I met the man I married, and I managed to hang onto Grandma until early this year. When she died, I couldn’t shake the feeling I was now a stray animal, set to wander aimlessly from now on.

My mother abandoned me as a child. It took having kids of my own for me to forgive her.

Grandma was 91 and in poor health, yet her death still came as a shock and huge loss. That’s because my grandmother was a hybrid — Grandma but, really, more Mom. Grandma was my last anchor to the past, and I now felt untethered.

I spent the better part of my life angry at Grandma because of my rough childhood. Grandma grew up on a homestead in Southeastern Colorado during the Great Depression, and she was a tough lady because of it. There wasn’t affection in our home, and she didn’t shower her children with compliments. She never told me “I love you,” even though I know she did.

It wasn’t until Grandma died that I understood the immense sacrifice she and Grandpa made in spending their retirement years raising a third child — their daughter’s child, the result of an affair with a married man two decades older. Instead of selling their home and buying a motor home to tour the country, they worked years longer, Grandma as a cashier at the local grocery store and Grandpa at the dry cleaners, to support their only grandchild.

My mother left to pursue a journalism career, and because of this, my family was saddled with constant emotional challenges. Anger and rage toward my mother filled my teenage years, but Grandma never wavered in defending her daughter.

“She’s a good mother,” Grandma said to me once. My mother had been dead for almost 20 years at this point, and I was pregnant with my son.

“I would never throw my kid out like an old sweater,” I shot back. She never said her daughter’s actions were wrong or that I didn’t deserve to be treated this way. We would never agree on this. In the end, though, it didn’t matter.

A few months before she died, I called, and we talked about my parents in a rare and candid conversation.

“Oh, don’t think back on that; there’s nothing there but sadness,” she said. “Focus on what’s ahead; that’s what is important.”

As Grandma aged and her health failed, I started experiencing anticipatory grief. When she broke her hip, I flew to be at her hospital bedside. I’d become accustomed to receiving messages that she was in the hospital for one reason or another. I’d cry and go a night without sleeping, sure this time was it. I went into work with puffy eyes, waiting for the word Grandma was dead. For three years, she rallied. Until the last time, when she didn’t.

After Grandma’s death, I searched online for information on grieving; I had done this before, but this time I became consumed reading about the path to healing. Among those many searches, which have since blurred together, one comment I stumbled across stayed with me: Grief is the nectar that purifies our relationships.

I’m not yet 40, and my family of origin is gone. It’s a strange feeling; sometimes it’s sad, but it is also freeing. If there is one thing Grandma taught me by example, it’s this: It’s all right to be different. But it took me years to heed this lesson.

Grandma will always be my mother. And mothers, whether we like to admit it or not, shape our lives. As Abraham Lincoln once said, “All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” I am me because of Grandma.

My grandmother is a very calm and composed woman. She has a good judgment about the world. She never loses her temper. She has a very smart way of approaching challenges and often advises everyone in the family during tough times. Although she comes from an older generation, she tries to keep up with everything new. She can operate her smartphone without needing too much help as she is educated and can find her way. Whenever she needs help, she doesn’t mind asking for assistance from other people.

We feel lucky to have our grandmother in the family as she is the pillar of moral support for everyone. She keeps the family together and well in order. I wish to be just like my grandmother and respected in society when I grow up.

How my grandparents taught me to love by faith.

Who has inspired you to love by faith? How has it changed your life?

For many reasons I have inherited an unlikely legacy.

My family is a mix of races and ethnicities brought together from three continents through generations of adoption and marriage.

As a Korean-born girl adopted into an American family in the Midwest, I often struggled to find my place between worlds. I landed in the blank hyphenated space between Asian and American, thoroughly one, but seen as another. Over the years, my sense of belonging has been drawn significantly from my grandparents’ belief in the diversity and depth of the body of Christ. 

My father’s parents led textured lives that, in retrospect, seem larger than life. I had the pleasure of knowing them best in their mellowed and observant later years, when memories are warmer and edges softer. The story of their lives came to me over Frosted Flakes for breakfast on a sunny Denver porch, in dusty trunks of old letters and trinkets, and the interrupted telling of tales as each attempted to tell it right.

My grandmother was raised by a single mother with her brothers in Ohio. Later, during the Depression, she ventured to southern Virginia to teach, and married my grandfather, a man whose Virginia roots are centuries old and include a Confederate general. It’s a complex history of land and slaves, war and loss, faith and reconciliation.

During the segregation years in southern Virginia, my grandfather’s business was completely open to all customers regardless of race. He hired local Black tradesmen rather than seeking white tradesmen from neighboring towns. An invitation to join the all-white country club was declined, despite the boost it could have brought to his business.

Eventually my grandparents left Virginia, but their lives were set in a pattern of loving by faith. For them it was a natural extension of their journey to a deeper and more personal faith in Jesus Christ. The result was a genuinely open life that shaped their family for generations to come.

The richness of this legacy has deepened as I’ve matured and come to a place where I can see how boldly and courageously they lived. From them I’ve taken three key things with me:

The Two Most Important Life Lessons My Grandma Taught Me

Loving, gentle, brave, spiritual, spicy, funny, and resilient — those are just a few words that describe my biggest supporter and the backbone of my family, my grandma. In my experience, in the black community, grandmas tend to hold a very strong position in their family's lives and unselfishly serve as being the "lifeline." They possess the knowledge and wisdom of a world we have not yet experienced and, in many cases, they carry us through this journey by teaching us the importance of heritage, tradition , self-worth, and togetherness. Ina May, my grandma, whom we all call Grandmumsy, has taught me many things that are bigger than material possession; instead they are traditions that were passed down to me in the form of life lessons. These two will be with me forever.

Honor Nature

Grandmumsy hails from St. Catherine, Jamaica, which is considered the country, the bush. Having been raised among chickens, goats, roosters, cows, and more, I'd say she knows a thing or two about appreciating animals and trees and honoring the planet entirely. Visiting the country was not something I liked as a kid, but, my goodness, do I yearn to be there right now to hear the endless stories about her childhood, how she would sing to the plants and watch them flourish. She always embedded in my brain that "nature is the ultimate healer, and when you nurture it, it will always be there to honor you back."

Plants and herbs were always in full stock at her home ( aloe vera has always been one of her favorites), and her love for nature was the catalyst for my holistic upbringing. She's the source of why I still keep fresh herbs and plants in my home and the true inspiration behind my decision to follow my heart and create a holistic skincare business. Honoring nature is a tradition she passed on to me and I vow to pass on to many generations to come. Nature is our medicine, our lifeline. When we honor it, it honors us.

Family Comes First

My Grandmumsy made sure I understood the importance of family . She left her beautiful homeland in 1969, at the age of 23, separating from her children and family to come to the U.S. for opportunity. That experience can be traumatic, but not for her. The hopefulness of bettering the lives of her lineage far exceeded her fears.

Moving to the U.S. alone truly made her value the strength and power in cohesiveness. Family was the most important thing to her then, and it still is today. Since birth, I can remember spending every holiday , birthday celebration , and Sunday dinner at her house. Not a weekend went by without a night spent together. The unbreakable bond she instilled in me molded how I navigate life today. The lesson: "We cannot grow without togetherness, as this journey is not meant to be traveled alone." Family, either by blood or chosen, can help you through the roughest and toughest times. Find your tribe, dwell in them, and watch what you can accomplish.

Ina May is the epitome of grace, and to say I am lucky to have her blood pulsing through my veins is an understatement. She's taught me what it is to be understanding, kind, resilient, assertive, spicy, and irie; let life flow in the way it's supposed to. She has taught me to be assertive in what I want but refrain from controlling the outcome. The traditions I've been brought up with have been nothing short of gems. Wisdom and love will guide you, nature will honor you, your family and tribe will hold you, and your lineage will be there to carry those traditions on for generations to come.

Her stories are really addictive and that’s made us a fan of her. At this age, she still goes to the kitchen and takes care of the cooking. She was an amazing cook.

My mother and aunties love my grandma a lot. They respect her and help her in all of her works. We all cousins also try loving her. She is the most amazing woman in my life.

Both families agreed and they got married. The most touching part of her life is, they faced some financial problems as a family. She started working as a part-time school teacher. She was really hardworking. That was really tough to maintain the whole family, lots of household works after doing teaching in the school.

But she did these successfully. Her hard work pays off and she was able to create a better place for the next generation. We love her a lot. She was a true fighter.  

I and my cousins best friend:

She is my best friend. Not only I, but there also are lots of my cousins who used to spend most of the times with her. She loves us too. She never refuses us in anything. She always loves to tell us stories and teach us small lessons. She is very friendly.  

After all, the whole family loves her. She has lots of contributions to this family. That’s why they never let her be down. Everyone respects her as like deities. I love my grandmother a lot too.

During the last eight months of my grandmother's life, a manila folder with "Grandma" scribbled across the tab sat at the corner of my desk. In it were notes from the day we traveled around the town she lived in for decades, a recording from an interview I did on her 90th birthday , and files about her family lineage.

That folder was an attempt to contain 94 years of life . A tangible grip on the woman I was about to lose. I planned to open the folder, review the contents, and prepare more questions. But I never did. Maybe that's because I knew that what the folder didn't, couldn't contain was what mattered most.

Here are some of the life lessons she taught me.

Love without condition

Grandma was stubborn. There was a right way to make a pot roast and a right way to live. As her first grandchild, I followed the rules — until, at 34, I didn't.

When I told her I was going to quit my legal career to live in a car and explore the American West, she shook her head and said, "I just don't know what you're going to do after." But soon she let go of any notion she'd had about my life and accepted.

On the day I gave my notice, she emailed me to let me know she'd been thinking of me, and she told me she knew I was doing the right thing. After that, she laughed when I talked about my misadventures. "You sure don't get that from me," she said after every story.

She taught me how, through accepting our differences, we find life's greatest connections and love others without condition.

While Grandma may not have chosen to spend time camping or climbing mountains, her frequent statements that she "couldn't do" what I often did came from a place of humility.

She was one of the most resilient humans I've ever known. She nursed two husbands through cancer, held a family together for over seven decades, and, at 87, refused morphine the night after she had a section of her colon removed in an emergency surgery.

Throughout her life, Grandma kept her mind and body moving.

Every morning began with the newspaper's word puzzles. On visits, I'd sip coffee and watch the concentration lines on her face as we talked through the clues that stumped us.

Her days were filled with walking, tending to flowers, doing household chores, and doing water aerobics.

Stay simple

Grandma and I talked often, especially during her final years. We talked about the moon, the weather, and the ways the world had changed.

While Grandma had adapted to these shifts — she had an iPad and was on social media — she also lamented that technology pulled us from what's essential. "Nowadays, everybody's got a phone, and they're always looking at it," she said.

She refocused me on the simple moments that make a life.

Days before her memorial service, I finally put the "Grandma" folder away, trusting that the lessons from the 41 years we had together were part of me. I trust I'll carry her teachings forward.

I Admire My Grandmother (Essay Sample)

I admire my grandmother.

Everybody has one influential person in one’s lives. Personally, my grandmother is the most influential person in my life whom I admire. My grandmother assisted me to grow into a caring, smart, and friendly person and that has really helped me to be the person that I am today. Many people have a pleasant relationship with their parents. However, I am a special case because the one person I have always had a pleasant relationship with is my dear grandmother. She is a wonderful woman and one unique trait about her is that she has never lost her sense of humor. She laughs all the jokes I make and that draws me close to her even more. She has always been the person to trust and I never keep any secrets from her. Because of her positive personality, my home is peaceful and rich of laughter. My grandmother is truly an amazing woman .This paper thrives to describe my grandmother and the things she has done in my life that makes me admire her.

My granny is a special person because she is kind to every person she meets. She raised her children and taught them to be kind, honest, brave, and pleasant people. Anybody who happens to know my granny knows that she is truly friendly and fun to talk to. One thing about her that I make fun of her the most is, she is short in height such that whenever I stand close to her I would actually have to look down. She is a beautiful woman and her smile can brighten the entire room and she has a self assured posture even though she is short. She is caring and forgiving because I once broke her favorite vessel and instead of her getting furious with me she forgave and advised me to be always careful. Another unique thing about her is that she is very patient with people and she is not even tampered. She is someone who is always free to listen like she has this gift of talking less but listening much. She doesn’t jump to accusations without proof and she doesn’t count on speculations but facts; what a granny.

My grandmother is an outgoing person, compassionate, and brilliant person who had no self image. My granny can well be a perfect example of a counselor because she is always advising people me included. She has always shown and advised me to do things in the right way. She has frequently insisted people ought to be discipline; doing what is right, what is just, and what is fair. I personally am a believer and a strong religious person because my grandmother too is a religious person and she always insisted that humanity would not exist on earth without the grace of God. Whenever I had a problem with friends in school or relationship issues, she is always there to support and hold my hands. She could play some music when am doing homework and still I could the hear tune of the music she played and all I remember are those wonderful moments of my granny.

In conclusion, everybody has one influential person in one’s lives and personally, my grandmother is the most influential person in my life whom I admire. I am fortunate because the one person I have always had a pleasant relationship with is my dear grandmother. Because of her I am the person I am today and I thank God for giving me such a big blessing in my life. My granny has always been a jewel that I will always treasure and praise for the rest of my life.

The Death of My Grandmother and Lessons Learnt Essay

Introduction.

For many people, the death of their grandparents means the loss of a very close relative, who was given an important role in their lives. After the death of a grandmother, a person can experience many different emotions. The loss of a dear person is frightening and unsettling. Often the loss of a grandmother is the first loss in life, which only complicates the feelings experienced. Death is a natural part of life that we have to deal with sooner or later. The loss of my grandmother was the biggest tragedy that has happened to me. The main reason is the fact that she was the one who raised me to become who I am. She was closer to me than my parents because they were mostly busy at their jobs. My grandmother always accompanied me throughout my childhood.

Nonetheless, the given obstacle was a mere setback for my future success. At first, I was inclined to be pessimistic and depressed due to the fact that I did not see myself enjoying life anymore. As time passed, I began to realize that I am the only one who can and will carry on her legacy and memory because she raised me by pouring her soul into me. In addition, I started to appreciate life more because I faced the concept of death early on.

I learned many valuable things after my grandmother passed away. The best way to feel better after the death of a loved one is to indulge in pleasant memories. I tried to remember the moments when we laughed together, had fun, or other pleasant situations that we experienced with my grandmother. Also, over time, I could revise our box or album of memory, so as not to forget about all the moments experienced. I realized that if you focus on helping others, it will be easier for you to survive the loss and move on. It is also critical to support the parents and brothers during difficult moments. Some of your parents have lost their mother, and this is a terrible obstacle. I learned to recall that I love my loved ones and try to take care of them even in small endeavors, such as offering to make tea or washing the dishes. It is important to experience the joy that my grandmother lives in my memory.

Furthermore, I learned that there are several stages that each person experiencing loss goes through shock, anger, despair, and acceptance. As a rule, these stages take a year, and it is no accident that in the old traditions, the mourning for the deceased lasted as long. These experiences are individual and depend on the degree of closeness with the deceased person, on the circumstances in which he passed away. At each stage, there may be experiences that seem abnormal to people. For example, they hear the voice of a deceased person or feel his presence. They may remember the departed, dream about him, may even be angry with the deceased, or, conversely, not experience any emotion. These conditions are natural and are due to the functioning of the brain. However, it is important to know that pathological reactions to stress can occur at each stage.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that the loss of my grandmother was a major challenge that I faced in my entire life. Although it dealt irreparable damage, I am convinced that it made me much stronger as a human being both emotionally and mentally. I acquired a certain degree of peace and calmness during stressful periods because none of them can be as painful as the loss of my grandmother. In addition, I became more aware of the concept of death, which forced me to fully appreciate my time and life.

After three years of marriage and a lavish wedding attended by Anya Taylor-Joy, Nancy Pelosi and Olivia Rodrigo, the oil heiress is seeking a divorce from her husband, Tobias Engel.

Ivy Getty, the oil heiress and model, has filed for divorce from her husband, Tobias Engel, a little over two years after the couple hosted a lavish wedding celebration at the San Francisco home of the bride’s grandmother Ann Getty. The themed outfits, designer dresses and starry guest list all combined for a spectacle that was breathlessly covered by the fashion press.

Here’s what we know about the couple’s split so far.

Who is Ivy Getty?

Ivy Love Getty is the great-granddaughter of the oil tycoon J. Paul Getty and the only daughter of the musician John Gilbert Getty and the jewelry designer Alyssa Boothby. After her father’s death in 2020, Ms. Getty paid tribute in an Instagram post , calling him the “coolest man to ever land on this planet.”

In addition to being an heiress, Ms. Getty is also a fashion model represented by Ford Models . (She appeared on the cover of Town & Country in May 2022.) Like her grandmother, the publisher and interior designer Ann Getty, who also died in 2020 , Ivy is a philanthropist. In 2022, she held a charity dinner in Venice to raise money for Ukraine. “Philanthropy is the most important thing to me,” she told L’Officiel , adding, “It’s important to stay aware of what is going on in the world.”

A fashion darling, Ms. Getty attended the Met Gala in 2022 in custom Oscar de la Renta and in 2023 in Maison Margiela . She is a fashion week staple in New York, London and Paris.

Who is her husband, Tobias Engel?

Tobias Engel is a photographer and the son of Peter Engel, an Austrian businessman, and Cheryl Prime, an English actress. Ms. Getty told Vogue that the couple first met through a relative before running into each other again at Paris Fashion Week.

“I saw this cute guy who was taking photos of the event and of me,” she said. “I naturally went over, and we started talking.”

What’s the latest with their marriage?

In January, after three years of marriage, Ms. Getty filed for divorce from Mr. Engel in the Supreme Court of New York County. (The couple were married in a private ceremony in December 2020, some 11 months before their San Francisco wedding celebration.) Mr. Engel, who court records show responded to the complaint on March 25, is contesting the divorce.

What is a contested divorce?

A contested divorce means either that one of the spouses does not want a divorce, or that the spouses do not agree on the grounds for the divorce or what should become of their children, finances or property after the split. (In New York State, there is a separate process for uncontested, or amicable, divorces.) Claire O’Connor, a representative for Ms. Getty, declined to comment on the reason for divorce or why it is being contested.

Presumably their wedding was an understated affair, no?

Not quite. Rather, the wedding was as lavish as one might expect for the great-granddaughter of an oil tycoon who was once the richest man in the world — back when a billion dollars still meant something .

The actress Anya Taylor-Joy was her maid of honor , and the ceremony was officiated by the former speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. (Ms. Getty was raised in San Francisco, Ms. Pelosi’s congressional district and home turf .) Ms. Getty’s 16-foot veil and mirrored wedding dress were designed by John Galliano for Maison Margiela. Mr. Galliano designed not only Ms. Getty’s dress, but also the dresses for all 14 bridesmaids. It is not something he normally does but he was “bewitched” by Ms. Getty, he told Vogue .

Who was there?

Earth, Wind & Fire performed at a 1960s-inspired welcome party, the first event of a three-day celebration. As Ms. Pelosi officiated in the transformed San Francisco City Hall, Mayor London Breed and Gov. Gavin Newsom were in attendance. The fashion designer Wes Gordon was photographed with Ms. Getty’s aunt Vanessa Getty. The crown princess of Greece rubbed shoulders with the social media star Rickey Thompson. Princess Olympia of Greece and Denmark shared the dance floor with the pop star Olivia Rodrigo and the YouTuber Gigi Gorgeous.

Before this union, had her family done anything of note?

Most notably, the Getty family has made its billions thanks to the patriarch J. Paul Getty , who founded Getty Oil. In 1974, he had an estimated fortune of $2 billion to $4 billion. Mr. Getty is also known for his refusal to pay a $16 million ransom for a grandson who was kidnapped by an Italian crime syndicate in 1973.

“I have 14 other grandchildren and if I pay one penny now, then I’ll have 14 kidnapped grandchildren,” Mr. Getty said at the time.

It wasn’t until his grandson’s ear was mailed to an Italian newspaper that he relented and the family paid a reported $2.8 million ransom.
