Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence refers to an individualā€™s ability to identify their emotions and understand what they are communicating to them. Emotional intelligence also involves a personā€™s perception of those around you, which creates harmony and respect (Boekhorst, 2015). A leader that does not understand how they feel cannot manage their relationship with others since it is hard for them to relate to their feelings. Emotional intelligence in a leader comprises self-knowledge (awareness), motivation, social skill, empathy, and self-regulation. Each of these facets determines how well a leader gets rounded, thus enabling him/her to excel in the business world.

Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is one of the most important qualities of a leader and trumps all. Every leader, manager, and entrepreneur purposing to make it in business must possess this quality. A leader who has self-awareness knows what motivates them and their decision-making process. When a leader understands their motivation, they can channel the same to the employees to acquire high productivity and harmony (Rao, 2020). Research provides that the energy a leader channels to his/her employees reflects who they are, meaning that a leader who instigates strength to his/her followers Is a strong person who knows their strengths and weaknesses. A self-aware leader is alert to their inner signals, which helps them recognize their feelings and their effects on their job performance. The moral compass helps in decision making, thus deducing the most practical course of action (Rao, 2020). A self-aware leader can see the bigger picture and is genuine about it, giving them the vision to lead and the ability to distinguish between their strengths and weaknesses.

Self-Regulation

Self-regulation refers to the ability to manage oneā€™s emotions in an unrestrained environment. Self-regulation helps leaders to escape the bondage of oneā€™s impulses. Leaders who possess this quality lean toward thoughtfulness and reflection, accepted change and indecision, honesty, and the ability to fight instincts. Self-regulation helps leaders to maintain a positive outlook on life (Rao, 2020). A leader must be able to cool themselves down when upset and cheer themselves up when down. A self-regulated leader is flexible and adapts to various styles or work with their employees and take charge of all situations no matter how challenging. The quality allows one to be an independent actor without needing other people to pull them out of greasy situations or provide the path towards their goals.

A leader cannot be an effective one if they cannot motivate other people. In the workplace, leaders must set goals to ensure a change in their companies and encourage them to follow the same direction (Rao, 2020). Employees mostly do what they have been instructed to do, and without a motivational leader, most would get lost. Successful leaders can motivate people even if it is one of the hardest things to do since people motivate themselves. The secret to being a leader that motivates his/her employees lies in valuing these people than oneself.

Empathy is the strength to relate with and comprehend the needs and views of other people. Empathic leaders can recognize other peopleā€™s feelings even when they are not obvious. Empathy sharpens a personā€™s communication skills in that it guides them on not saying the wrong things when another person is suffering on the inside (Rao, 2020). An empathic leader builds a feeling of importance and belonging to their employees by showing them that their leader cares and is not a heartless detached robot.

Social Skill

The quality refers to a personā€™s ability to tune into other peopleā€™s emotions and comprehend what they think about certain things. This ability helps a leader with team playing, collaboration, and negotiation skills. Active listening and excellent communication skills are important to this quality. Lack of social skills in a leader may result in companiesā€™ collapse due to lack of representation from a coherent external environment (Rao, 2020). The modern world involves leaders assuming that they need to tweet more and send thousands of emails to have social skills, but one needs to be comfortable connecting with other people in person and on social channels.

Leadership Theories

Leadership theories are thoughts that explain why and how certain individuals become leaders. The theories focus on the leaderā€™s characteristics in each school of thought. The theories are:

Great Man Theory

The theory vies leadership as an individualā€™s heroic act. The theory provides that something special exists about an individualā€™s combination of abilities and personality traits that sets them up as great leaders, thus distinguishing them from others (Amanchukwu et al., 2015). The theory clings to the fact that leaders are born and not made. Companies tend to focus on persons that possess the ability to inspire others toward a common zeal.

Behavioral Theory

The behavioral theory focuses on the way leaders behave in the workplace. For instance, do leaders just provide rules and expect other people to follow them without question, or do they involve others in the decision-making process (Amanchukwu et al., 2015)? The theory believes leaders can be made from their behaviors and not born as the Great Man Theory holds. Depending on a leaderā€™s behavior, they can become autocratic, democratic, or Laissez-faire leaders.

Situational Theory

The theory focuses on the situational variables without terming one personā€™s leadership style as better than the others (Amanchukwu et al., 2015). The theory states that different situations call for different leadership styles and the maturity level of the followers.

Transformational Theory

The theory focuses on the relationship between leaders and their followers, emphasizing charismatic and inspirational leaders. The theory focuses on leaders who aim to change their followerā€™s performance on various tasks (Amanchukwu et al., 2015). Leaders in this theory get motivated by their ability to show their followers that specific tasks are vital and should be highly involved in performing them.

Trait Theory

The theory assumes that leaders are born possessing certain leadership traits, which makes them more suitable for leadership roles than others who lack the natural characteristics (Amanchukwu et al., 2015). The theory upholds the qualities of responsibility, intelligence, accountability, and creativity that make them prosper in leadership.

In conclusion, organizational behavior is a study that focuses on the effect of individual and group behavior in the workplace. The science helps leaders access their employeesā€™ attitudes, feelings, and motivation switches and guide them on their next steps. Through organizational behavior, companies can develop ways to reduce conflicts, improve productivity, build teamwork and create conducive working environments in the workplace. Leadership is a vital concept of organizational behavior and aims at defining the roles, traits, and theories of leadership suitable for different organizational structures and cultures.

- Assume that you are about to ask your supervisor for a raise. Which communication medium or channel would you use? What steps would you take to decrease the amount of noise that can decrease the effectiveness of your message? A managerā€™s work cannot flow without the presence of a supervisor as he ensures that everything is running smooth and according to program. Supervisors move from one place to the other correcting and identifying problems in the same organization. When managers require the supervisors for a raise, they need to have a good communication medium that will ensure the supervisor gets the massage in time and without any interruptions. The best medium in this context will be verbal communication where telephone call will be the best choice. This telephone however connects to a loudspeaker so that everybody will be in a position to hear the manager call the supervisor for a raise. There are several steps that managers or anyone using the medium follow for the purposes of reducing noise that would decrease the effectiveness of the message. First will be calling for attention from everybody so that there can be no interruptions form noise coming from workers and customers. The second step is ensuring that the message used is the same as that of the audience who in this case is the supervisor. This will reduce asking questions that waste time and decrease the effectiveness of the message. The next step will be using the right words and pronunciations so that from wherever he is, the supervisor will know and get the message directly and in time. This will have something to do with speech, volume, inflection and pace. The last step is probably saying thank you for the purposes of public etiquette. - Assume you are about to meet and negotiate with an individual from a low-context culture. Do you think the person will know a great deal about you before you meet with him/her? Explain. In business and commerce, a low context culture is using electronic methods like emails to communicate. Before that happens, there will be necessary preparation put in place and the person will have known a great deal about the one meeting and negotiating with him. It has happened earlier where talking with a stranger causes problems and therefore there is exchange of personal information while changing contacts for the purposes of familiarity. Rarely will one negotiate and meet someone with out prior arrangements and appointments. For instance, people ignore emails from strangers and at this time, engaging in a talk and most of them all negotiating is hard and almost impossible. The receiver party knowing a great deal about the other party is important because he or she will compose him or herself and give the correct information. Mostly a low context culture comes in handy between different companies and in other cases different countries. Meeting new people is sometimes hard for both parties and time used for introduction and familiarizing with one another wastes more time. - Think of a time when you held fast to a decision even after learning that it was probably a wrong or faulty decision. How long did you persist with your original (faulty) decision? Looking back now, when should you have modified your decision? What could have convinced you to do so? Describe. A manager has the authority to say something and the employees just follow regardless of it being right or not. This is a situation that most managers get into and later wish they did not make the decisions just like I was a few years ago. Mine was quite tricky because I authorized the employees to keep off the offices until they get their pay. This was the worst decision I ever made in many years being a manager. I persisted on the faulty decision for almost a week because I did not want to change the perception people had on me. I thought that the employees wanted me on their side but I was wrong, they feared losing their jobs therefore when summoning time came, they all said that I was the one telling them to refrain from work and being under me they had no option. I wish that I had modified my decision when I was defining the problem because at that time I had a chance to change everything and all that I had. The fact that there was no one else supporting me apart from the workers who definitely wanted more pay could have convinced me to change me to modify my decision. I was too blind to wrongly identify and define the problem, which led to my wrong decision. - When looking at the decision-making process do you feel any one-step is more important than the others are? If so why? I feel there is one important step when making decisions and this is the first step mostly realizing why and when there is need for making decisions. What does this mean? This means that if one misses this step, the decision made is always wrong and regrets come thereafter especially knowing that there was a better way to handle the problem and make a better decision. Having gone through many mistakes has taught me many lessons and if I was to give advice to potential managers, I would advice people to make use of the first step and make the right possible decisions a manger could possibly make. 5. Why is diagnosis so vital in organizational change programs? Diagnosis of present and potential problems has to do with collecting information that gives a reflection of organizationā€™s level of effectiveness. There must be gathering and analysis of data that measure state of production, satisfaction, efficiency and addictiveness as well as development. Diagnosis data also gives an establishment of the problem base for the purposes of the organizational development effortā€™s evaluation additional to serving as the problem basis for the purposes of identifying the problem. 6. Might some managers attempt to implement a particular intervention, such as TQM, without first diagnosing whether the intervention would be appropriate for their organization's problems Some managers do attempt to implement total quality management without making sure that their interventions would be appropriate for solving the problems that challenge them in their workplace. It is for this reason that no level and step of decision-making is less important to managers and organizations. 7. Why is it important for managers to reduce the resistance to change openly displayed or covertly practiced by employees? Employees too are stakeholders of an organization because the function of a leader in leadership involves working closely with those in management to ensure that the company is going to the right direction. It also involves looking and examining at the trends and data to ensure it remains competitive. Effective leadership involves management since managing people is all about understanding individualsā€™ weaknesses and strengths within a working team. Management and leadership of people only depend on the role assigned within an organization. The mock therapy would act as platform for me to have more insight and awareness into therapeutic growth that I have today. Therapeutic growth includes confidence and maturity in terms of culture as well as what the employees want.

How can studying Organizational Behavior help you be a more effective manager?Ā 

Understanding organizational behavior involves understanding the relationship between an organization and its employees. When we understand this relationship, we can develop a better work environment. It helps us to better understand our employees. Being able to inspire our employees will make them more efficient. This is important because understanding what motivates them and what drives them to be their best not only improves their performance, but it also helps promote a positive atmosphere in the work environment. That positivity will cause happy and loyal employees, in turn helping to create a thriving company.

Four behavioral sciences contribute to the understanding of OB: psychology, social psychology, sociology and anthropology. How does understanding each of these help managers?

Psychology is a science that tries to measure, explain, and sometimes change the behavior of humans and animals. Psychology can provide insight into determining what might motivate a person to take a particular action or demonstrate a specific behavior. Social psychology is a form of psychology that blends concepts from both psychology and sociology. It focuses on peoplesā€™ influence on one another. Many things people do can influence the actions of another. Sociology studies people in relation to their social environment or culture. People often adopt the actions and attitudes of other people around them. The study of the culture of a particular group of people may offer meaningful insight into the expected actions of a new comer. Anthropology is the study of societies to learn about human beings and their activities. Work can have a significant impact on the lives of the people who work. For example, some jobs shortened the lives of workers, some jobs helped workers build personal wealth, while other jobs gave workers a great deal of inner satisfaction.

Think back to a time at work where there was a miscommunication. What led to it? What was the outcome? How can you avoid a similar miscommunication in the future?

Several years ago, I worked at a retirement home as a physical health assistant. I taught yoga and meditation classes, taught water aerobics, and oversaw the use of gym equipment. Part of my job included maintaining the chemical balance in the pool and jacuzzi. One day, when it was time to test the water and add the required chemicals, I was occupied with a resident and his therapy so I asked a coworker to do the reading for me. ā€œJaneā€ ran the tests and wrote down the numbers, leaving them for me to interpret and balance the chemicals. One of them was written down as 35 instead of 53. The number needed to read between 50-65. Thinking the level was at 35, I ended up adding way too much to the jacuzzi and it had to be closed down for 72 hours to allow the water time to adjust. In the future, we double checked the readings.

What is the relationship between attitudes and behavior? Have you ever experienced cognitive dissonance? What happened?

Attitudes can positively or negatively affect a personā€™s behavior, regardless of whether the individual is aware of the effects. Attitudes are infectious and can affect the people that are near the person exhibiting a given attitude, which in turn can influence their behavior as well. A person who has positive attitudes towards work and co-workers can positively influence those around them. People with a good attitude are active and productive and do what they can to improve the mood of those around them. In much the same way, a person who displays negative attitudes will behave accordingly. People with these types of attitudes towards work may likewise affect those around them and behave in a manner that reduces efficiency and effectiveness.

There are four potential employee responses to dissatisfaction in the workplace: exit, voice, loyalty, and neglect. Have you ever found yourself expressing one of these responses? If so, provide some context and examples.

Yes, I once experienced dissatisfaction in the workplace and I found myself exiting. As I explained in a previous answer, I once worked at a retirement home as a physical health assistant. I taught yoga and meditation classes, taught water aerobics, and oversaw the use of gym equipment. I loved it, until I got a boss that was extremely overbearing and inconsiderate. I was supposed to be at work at 7:45 every morning. However, to get there from my house, I had to drive through two different school zones at morning drop off times. I do not like to be late, so to avoid getting stuck in school traffic, I would leave early so that I could be through the school zones before the traffic hit. Doing this every morning usually caused me to get to work around 7:15. I didnā€™t mind the extra time, though. I just used it to sweep up outside the pool area, take towels to laundry, etc. One day, as I was headed out to work, my dog needed to do her business and I had to wait to let her back inside. I didnā€™t make it to work until 7:30 that day, which was still on time since I didnā€™t have to be there until 7:45 anyway. My boss was angry at me for only being 15 minutes early instead of 30. She punished me by making me clean the bathroom floors with a toothbrush. I finished the floors, and then quit that afternoon.

Of the eight sources of emotions and moods identified in the text, I feel as though stress is the most critical. Not to count out any others, because I also believe they are a great part of your mood and emotions as well, but from a personal standpoint stress is the biggest factor for me. I am so much happier when I am reasonably relaxed. I have a positive attitude, my words are kind, and I am more pleasant to be around. If I am stressed, I am usually cranky and uptight. I snap at people for seemingly no reason. When I am over-stressed, I am just flat out angry. Iā€™m easily agitated and irritable, and absolutely no fun to be around.

There are six steps in the rational decision-making process, as described in Chapter 6. Using buying a car as an example, how could someone use this process?

The first step in the process is Define the Problem. I think this step would be carried out just by deciding to buy a car. I decided to buy a new car last year because the engine kept failing on my old one and it was no longer safe. The second step is Identify the Decision Criteria. In this step, you should decide what you need in the car. Since I intended to keep this car for a long time, I needed one that was big enough for a family. One to hold car seats, with plenty of storage in the back, and good gas mileage. Step three is Allocate Weights to the Criteria. This means I had to decide which of the criteria was the most important. If I couldnā€™t get a car that met all my criteria, I needed to decide which ones were must haves, and which could I do without. Step four, Develop the Alternatives. This step was simple. I made a list of possible choices and the information on each of them. Step five, Evaluate the Alternatives. In this step, I compared the assets for each car. For step six, Select the best Alternative, I chose the car I wanted.

After watching the video on the Abilene Paradox (see above lecture), what are some suggestions to avoid traveling down the ā€œroad to Abileneā€? (You can find some suggestions here).

One way to avoid the Road to Abilene is to encourage the group members to share their real opinions with the group, and not just in private. Many times, members do not feel comfortable sharing their honest opinion if they feel like it isnā€™t the consensus. Instead of feeling confident to tell the group without fear of rejection or punishment, they go with the team in public and tell the truth about their feelings to their friends later. Having a different opinion can make you feel like an outsider. I am so guilty of this! Personally, I donā€™t share because Iā€™m afraid it will come across disrespectful to my leaders. Reassuring the members and keeping the lines of communication clear and open can help to alleviate this issue.

How does describing the toast-making process relate to decision making? (Watch Tom Wujek’s video to help you answer this question).

I think describing the toast-making process could relate to decision making in that you must decide what to draw and describe. You must decide what steps you think are important to include, and what steps you think go without saying. For example, Sally may not even think about plugging in the toaster when she describes the process. Maybe she thinks itā€™s unnecessary because obviously the toaster wonā€™t work unless you plug it in, or maybe she doesnā€™t think about including it because she keeps her toaster plugged in all the time so plugging it in isnā€™t a step she has to make. Meanwhile, Johnny thinks its important to include describing the act of plugging in the toaster and draws a picture of him doing that.

How do group norms influence an individual’s behavior? Give one or two examples of how you have seen this play out at work.

Group norms influence an individualā€™s behavior because of our underlying need to fit in. Everyone has the need, whether it is a great need or just a subconscious one. For example, I have been in the same position for two years, but this year I was moved to a different school than I was at last year. The school I came from last year was very open and bright. We worked with second and third grade children, so the atmosphere was energetic and fun. My coworkers were kind, friendly people. Everyone smiled at each other, spoke kind words, ate lunch together, etc. Because of this, my somewhat introvert personality ended up practically disappearing. I spoke to everyone I saw, I began eating lunch in the lounge instead of going out alone, I even brought cake or cookies every now and then. Then I moved to the junior high, where the employees behave much differently toward each other. I still speak, though Iā€™m normally not replied to. People put their heads down when they pass each other in the halls. There is no community eating/relaxing area, so Iā€™m back to eating alone in my car. The one (and only) time I brought cake, no one even ate any because they found it so bizarre and against norms.

I am a part of a cross-functional team. My job is to assist the students with the different math subjects. I have been assigned students by the school counselor, who I am supposed to work with their specific needs to help improve their understanding. There are four members on our level of our team. One for each subject: math, English, science, and social studies. It can be successful when we focus on the needs of the student. However, if we focus on our needs, what works best for us, or if we get caught up in whoā€™s ā€œin chargeā€ or a certain studentā€™s case, that is when it begins to fail.

When is work performed by individuals preferred over work by teams?

Work by individuals can be preferred over work by teams for a multitude of reasons. Perhaps the team cannot decide on a course of action so the leader chooses one members idea for them to carry out alone. Maybe one team member doesnā€™t get along with the other team member or members, so they decide they would personally rather work on their own. It could also be that the task is not big enough or doesnā€™t require as much manpower, so the team is better used elsewhere while one person does the job.
