The major Netherlands intakes are usually in September/October and January/February. The academic year in the country begins on the 1st of September.

The deadline for an application isn't constant across Dutch universities and there are entry restrictions such as Numerus Fixus. It is a method for limiting the number of applicants at a university. Eligibility Criteria for Intakes in Netherlands

Here are the usual eligibility criteria for the Netherlands intakes.

Candidates should meet minimum diploma and English proficiency requirements.
They should have a Dutch high school diploma at VWO level/foreign equivalent while meeting grade entry requirements.
Another application route is completing a year of university with a grade average of 70% at a 3-year university or 80%/3.5 GPA at a 4,5, or 6-year university program.
Some accepted English proficiency tests include IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency, and others.

How to Apply for Universities in Netherlands

Here are the steps to apply for the Netherlands intake 2024 at leading universities.

Check the entry requirements and application deadlines.
Apply online on the university's student portal.
Upload all documents while applying, including transcripts, English language proficiency proof, statement of motivation (if needed), contact details, financial aid documents, and more.
Some institutions may require Studielink applications. Login details should be obtained for OSIRIS online applications as well. Applications for financial aid can also be done from this portal.

Scholarships for Intakes in Netherlands

Here are some of the available scholarships for intakes in the Netherlands.

NL Scholarship:

It is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education , Culture and Science and Dutch research universities and institutions of applied sciences. An amount of €5,000 is offered to contribute to living costs. Students should be non-EEA applicants without degrees from educational institutions in the country, with excellent grades and meeting specific institutional requirements. A motivation letter may also be needed.

Maastricht University NL-High Potential Scholarship:

Under this scholarship program, 24 scholarships of €30,000 (including tuition fee waiver and monthly stipend) are awarded to non-EU students each academic year.

Radboud Scholarship Program:

It is a selective scholarship offering benefits for non-EEA students. It will reduce tuition fees to €2.530. There will also be coverage for residence permits, visas, health insurance and liability insurance.

Utrecht Excellence Scholarship:

It offers funding for master’s degree applicants in the top 10% of their graduating class. The scholarship covers the tuition fee or the tuition fee plus the income needed for one year linked to a residence permit for study as determined by the Immigration and Naturalization (IND) Service.

Amsterdam Talent Scholarship (ATS):

This is given to successful non-EEA students enrolled at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. It offers coverage up to 50% of the institutional tuition fees. Applicants should be able to meet Dutch visa conditions and be enrolled in the institution while having paid tuition fees and not getting full coverage scholarships. They should have obtained 60 credits in the full academic year with a minimum 7.0 average grade.

How to become a PhD candidate

To become a PhD candidate you can apply to a specific PhD position that can be found on our vacancy website . If you can't find vacancies fitting your research interest, please consider sending an open application to the secretary of the research department of your interest .

Admission requirements

To apply for a PhD position you must:

Be familiar with the theory and methodology of the research field
Have a Dutch master’s degree (or a foreign equivalent)
Be proficient in English

Please read the job description carefully for any additional requirements.

English language requirement

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that you are able to:

Communicate and interact well
Participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses
Write scientific articles and your dissertation
Successfully defend your PhD dissertation

Here's the minimum requirement if you want to apply for a PhD or EngD programme at TU Delft:

IELTS Overall band score is 7.0 (with scores of at least 6.5 for all sections)
TOEFL Overall band score is 100 (with scores of at least 21 for all sections) Note: The TOEFL iBT Home Edition is accepted for the English proficiency, the TOEFL MyBest scores is not accepted.

You do not need to present the test results as part of your application; these results will be requested at a later stage during the selection procedure.

Extra test time

The testing institutions IELTS and TOEFL have accommodations available for test takers with a specific learning difficulty – for instance dyslexia or a motor disability. If you, for example, need an extension of the test time, you can discuss this personally with the testing institution. Exemptions from English proficiency test

Native speakers will be exempt from the English test requirement, as well as, in principle, non-native applicants who have obtained an English-taught Master’s degree. If during the selection process it is deemed that the English proficiency of the candidate with an English-taught Master’s degree does not meet the requirements, they may also be asked to do a test.

Prospective PhD candidates TILT

TILT is interested in recruiting talented PhD-candidates. We warmly invite PhD-candidates for internal positions, external PhD-candidates and scholarship PhD-candidates to inquire about the possibilities of doing a PhD at TILT. All TILT PhD candidates are expected to conduct research within one or more areas identified by TILT’s research program.

The Netherlands is one of the few countries in Europe, and the world, where PhD candidates are employees of the university. In most countries, they are treated as students, or have to pay for their time as PhD students through a scholarship.

Importantly, doing a PhD in the Netherlands means that you can start any time, there’s no enrolment tied to the academic year. A first year assessment will decide whether your contract will be prolonged.

Candidates with their own funding

Candidates with their own funding (scholarships, own funds, etc.) are invited to submit applications and declarations of interest throughout the academic year. Please see the application section on how to apply.

Candidates without funding

High-quality candidates without funding are regularly recruited via PhD vacancy announcements on the TILT website and academic vacancies websites to conduct research on TILT projects with a funded PhD position. This can either by a PhD position that is being funded by a grant or a position funded by Tilburg Law School (a so-called TIRO-position). Education System In the Netherlands

Higher education in the Netherlands is offered by two types of institutes – the research universities (universiteiten; WO) and universities of applied sciences (hogescholen; HBO). The universities of applied sciences comprise all general institutions, as well as institutions that specialize in a particular field of study such as fine and performing arts, agriculture, and educational training. Bachelor’s Programs

Some programs may also require 90 credits/1.5 years or above 120 credits/2 years for completion. Mathematics, agriculture, engineering, and natural sciences are a few disciplines that require 120 credits while pharmacy or veterinary medicine are few disciplines that require 180 credit/3 years for completion. The students are awarded Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc), and Master of Laws, depending on their chosen field of study.

PhD Programs

Basic Criteria for the UG Degrees include

To be admitted to the UG degree, a student must:Complete 12 years of secondary education in home country

Netherlands Student VISA Process

If you are an Indian student planning to study in the Netherlands, you may require a student VISA. You can make a VISA application following these steps:

Confirm your place at the university. Your host university should immediately start the VISA application process.
Submit all required documents for the VISA application process to the university.
When the university receives the documents, the application will be sent to the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND).
You will be informed of the application status by the university. The VISA processing time lasts for a month.
Once IND approves the VISA, you can seek an appointment with Dutch Consulate General or Embassy in your country for the Provisional Residence Permit (MVV). This must be collected from the embassy within three months of your application being approved by the university. The validity of MVV is three months and is not extendable.
If you are planning to study in the Netherlands for more than 3 months, then you should apply for a residence permit. Your photo and fingerprints will be taken at the embassy when you go to collect the MVV VISA at the embassy. Your biometric information will be sent to the IND for processing your residence permit card.
The residence permit card can be collected from the IND office after arriving in the Netherlands. This residence permit card stands valid for the entire course duration.

Post-Study Work VISA in the Netherlands

You must possess any of the following visas to continue in the Netherlands after graduation:

Orientation Year VISA : This VISA is known as Zoekjaar Hoogopgeleiden or Zoekjaar VISA in Dutch language and is ideal for students who have recently earned a bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degree from a Dutch university. This VISA will allow them to stay in the country for 12 months. The student must have graduated in the last 3 years to qualify for this VISA.
Orientation Year for a Highly Educated Migrant VISA : This VISA is also known as regeling hoogopgeleide and is ideal for students who have completed a master’s degree or PhD in particular subjects.
Orientation Year for a Highly Skilled Migrant: This VISA is known as kennismigrant in Dutch and is awarded to a student younger than 30 years old and earns an annual salary of €38,040. If a student is older than 30, the required annual salary is €51,888.
Orientation Year for a Scientific VISA: This VISA is usually awarded to PhD students. Generally, the research institute where they are currently enrolled for a PhD program or wish to continue their research in future will apply for the VISA on the student’s behalf.
Start-Up Residence Permit: This residence permit is awarded to students who wish to run an innovative business in the country after their studies. The student must collaborate with an experienced facilitator to be granted this permit. A facilitator is a business mentor who offers tailor-made packages to support the entrepreneur.
European Blue Card: A student is awarded an EU Blue Card for four years. To avail of this card, the student must have a minimum gross salary of € 5,403 per month and possess a job contract lasting at least a year for highly qualified employment.
Permanent Residence: A person can apply for a residence permit after staying in the country for five years.

Structure of a PhD in the Netherlands

In the case the doctoral candidate is not associated to a university, like for an external candidate, it will take longer to complete the PhD degree.

Dutch PhD defense ceremony

To defend your PhD thesis the Dutch way, there is a protocol you need to follow to the letter. As a matter of fact, the PhD defense in the Netherlands is not an examination but rather a ceremony. It serves the same purpose as a viva voce examination but with a more formal process in front of a traditionally dressed committee!

During this unique ceremony, the student also wears a full academic dress and uses formal titles. Moreover, the protocol stipulates what happens at each step, what the student should say at the beginning and how they should address their opponents. An officer of the university, a beadle, opens and closes the ceremony using a ceremonial staff.

The doctoral committee consists of at least 3 academics. They are there to assess the student’s thesis and determine if it’s worthy of a doctorate. It may include a professor – a ‘most learned opponent’, or a post-doctorate academic, a ‘learned opponent’. Other invited individuals can also ask questions to the student.

Another distinctive traits of the thesis defense in the Netherlands is the fact that students can have 2 supporters to accompany them. They served in the old days as “bodyguards” in case things got heated. Nowadays, they are more of a moral support and a practical assistance.

Lastly, PhD candidates need to publish their thesis as a book before the defense ceremony takes place.

How to apply for a PhD position in the Netherlands?

PhD’s candidates in the Netherlands are part of the academic staff of a research school or a graduate school. Research schools consists of partnerships between several research universities and institutes. Graduate schools on the other hands are organizations within universities. However, only research universities and in some cases research institutes can award PhD degrees.

Application can be done 2 ways: either you apply for an advertised PhD program or you submit your own research proposal. If you see a PhD position that interests you, contact the university directly to inquire about the application procedure.

In the case you have a specific proposal but can’t find a vacancy that matches your intended project, the process is to pitch your idea to universities or research groups who work in the relevant field and able to provide the funding you need.

Admission requirements

The criteria for admission to doctoral positions are rigorous. And prospective candidates must have a strong background in theory and practices in their field. They also must have a master’s degree in a relevant subject area. International students must ensure their master is recognized in the Netherlands.

To check a degree equivalency, you can go either on the website of the Dutch Organization for Internationalization in Education (Nuffic) or check with your choice university. Furthermore, since most international candidates choose to write their thesis in English, they need also need to provide a proof of a good command of the English language. (TOEFL or IELTS scores in most cases).

How much does a PhD cost in Netherlands?

Since PhD students are university employees who receive a salary, many Dutch doctoral programs apply no tuition fees. At least not in the literal sense. However, some universities may charge statutory fees for the enrollment, supervision, examination, administration or access to the research facilities of the institution.

Each university is free to decide how much fees they charge. Usually, this varies depending on the institution, the discipline of study, the cost of lab equipment etc.

Netherlands PhD funding

In the Netherlands, there are 3 ways to fund your doctoral studies:

Through an employment contract with your research university or institute
With a fellowship or grant
With a sponsorship from an employer

The first option is the most common. Moreover, around 17% of PhD candidates get a funding from a fellowship or grant from abroad. These organizations offering grants can be found on the website of Euraxess . The last option is to study for your PhD part-time while working. In this case, your employer provides the necessary funding for your doctorate.

Netherlands PhD visa

EU/EEA/Swiss nationals do not require any visa for a PhD study in Holland. Non-EU/EEA citizens on the other hand need to arrange for a long-stay entry visa. Usually, your host university should offer you assistance for your application. If this is not the case, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the university’s international office or HR department. You’ll be able to collect your entry visa at a Dutch embassy or consulate in your home country.

Moreover, they also need to apply for a residence permit for study purpose from the Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND). And lastly, upon your arrival in the Netherlands, you absolutely need to register with the local council of residence. This serves as a registration in the Personal Records Database (BRP) in order to get a Citizen Service Number (BSN).

There are approximately 140 PhD candidates at ITC, including research staff positions (AIO-positions). Most PhD candidates are full-time at ITC, aiming to submit and defend a PhD thesis within a four-year research period. Others are PhD interns spending periods of several months to one year at ITC as part of their studies.

Programme overview

Your tasks as a PhD researcher include research activities, attending training courses and teaching and supervising activities (in principle only for employees). Your research activities will provide you with the skills and experience you need to become an independent researcher. Part of your research also involves disseminating the knowledge you acquire, for example, through publications in academic journals.

During the 4-year PhD programme you do at least 30 credits worth of PhD courses or hands-on activities. These cover academic skills and career development, in depth disciplinary and wide-ranging courses. An integral part of a PhD is writing your PhD thesis and then, of course, presenting and defend your research in public. After successfully completing your PhD, you will be awarded the title of Doctor (Dr., equivalent to PhD).

For PhD candidates, the time trajectory for completing a PhD research project is four years. Continuation during this period is subject to quality assurance following TGS guidelines and the Hora Finita system.
