Talking about your hobbies
So, how can you talk about what you do in your free time?
Well here are some common and also more advanced phrases to help you talk about your hobbies.
I get up to a lot of things I don’t get up to much
- To get up to = to do an activity
Of course, it is always better to say something and describe an activity you do, rather than say, ‘I don’t have any hobbies’.
The most common way to talk about a hobby is
I like to do yoga I like doing yoga
What’s the difference between ‘ like doing ‘ and ‘ like to do ’?
- We can use both to express enjoyment.
- When I say, ‘I like doing yoga’ the focus is always on my enjoyment of the activity.
- However, if I say, ‘I like to do yoga’ this can also mean that I am describing either a choice or a habit
For example,
I like to do yoga on Thursdays
This focuses on the fact that I choose to do it on Thursdays, not any other day, or that I have the habit of practicing on Thursdays.
Here are some more useful expressions to describe hobbies you love.
- I ’m fond of playing video games
- I ’m into playing video games
- I’ m passionate about playing video games
Learning tip: When a verb follows a preposition it must be a gerund (verb+ing)!
If you are less serious about doing a hobby and it is something you do casually, not seriously, you can say…
I like to dabble in cooking I like to dabble in painting Sometimes, I dabble in investing I play the guitar, but I am just an aficionado I play the guitar, but I am just an amateur
Adverbs to talk about your free time activities
When talking about your hobbies, you can also go into more detail and say how often you do it, using different frequency adverbs.
Here are some simple ones
I regularly paint I often paint I frequently paint
Here are some more advanced ones
I paint whenever I can I paint as often as I can I paint whenever I get a chance I don’t paint as much as I would like I don’t get round to painting as much as I would like
Different tenses to describe your hobbies
Ielts speakingtip: to sound more sophisticated and to get a higher score in ielts, use different tenses in your answers..
Below you can see how we can use different tenses when talking about your free time activities.
- Present Simple
I paint I recently took up painting I am quite new to it
To take up a hobby = to start a hobby
- Past Simple
I started painting years ago I decided to have a go at painting I decided to try my hand at painting
To have a go at something = to try something new
To try my hand at something = to try something new
- Present Perfect Continuous
I’ve been painting for as long as I can remember I’ve been painting for donkey’s years
For donkey’s years = for a long time

Free time essay 7 models
Last updated Friday , 15-03-2024 on 11:57 am
Free time essay contains many important information about how to use leisure time and the importance of time and things that we can accomplish in leisure time to get the most out of it. All that information you’ll find here in free time essay.
Free time essay
There is no doubt that everyone has a free time daily, weekly or monthly, but we must use this time to develop ourselves and do not waste it in vain. All this will be found here in free time essay .
Leisure time
D uring life, man needs to spend many times in carrying out the necessary tasks required of him to implement them. After completing these works, he has leisure time, ranging from one person to another depending on the different situations and actions that people do in their day and night.
Leisure is a real blessing for those who use it well. It is a vengeance for those who live in a messy life, filled with illiteracy, a life that destroys the man and makes him live into misery.
The first step in investing leisure time in the right way is to define a goal or a set of clearly defined goals that a person seeks to achieve during his life.
These goals are the main motive that drives the person to set priorities to build his character, organize his time, exploit his abilities, and so on, Which ultimately makes it possible to view leisure as a blessing, not just a time to be filled with any activity.
Man must also use his free time to practice his hobbies and set a schedule for these hobbies at this time. The hobbies keep people away from bad companions, and the different kinds of deviations that may destroy the human, and hinder him from completing his life, and wasting his time in vain.
Taking care of the spiritual aspects, and trying to use leisure time to develop these aspects is the best way to exploit leisure time.
Attention to these aspects helps the human to rise and achieve the highest human grades. It is also necessary to pay attention in leisure time to the social aspects that need to be followed, especially that man is a social being by nature.
Free Time Essay in English
I like to use my spare time to do the work and the planned goals. I always use the method of writing, whether for my future desires, or the goals I expect to achieve. This helps me a lot in progressing and getting good results, whether in personal life or in studies.
When I set plans and goals, I cannot be easily distracted, and all that is required is to see my goals and strive to achieve them, according to the time period required to achieve this goal. I can say that I plan my free time in three stages.
The first stage
Setting quick goals, such as cleaning my room, buying clothes, going to the library, in the first stage I put everything that is simple and requires a short time such as hours or only one day.
The second stage
In the second stage, I set goals that require me more time, such as participating in a competition that requires work for a week or a month, or participating in a social activity that requires a long time.
The third stage
In the third stage I set my big goals such as saving money to buy a car, working to save money first, looking for opportunities for self-development and self-improvement such as learning a new foreign language, participating in hobbies that require continuous work such as theater art, or playing an instrument.
Therefore, I always spend my free time as planned and rarely improvise and deviate from the system that I love to live through.
My free time essay
Of course, my free time at this age has become more important, and I am organizing my time, setting goals and plans, and making a short, medium and long study of how to spend my free time, so that I can enjoy beside learning some new things.
So that I can return to study stronger and more experienced. I have an ambition to become a doctor, and in order to achieve this dream, I must strive and struggle and organize my spare time, whether to learn some new lessons or to learn some manual skills that may benefit me in the future.
So I put in my short goals to visit relatives, go out for a walk and do some sports to release negative energy. And in the medium goals I put going to the library at the end of the week to retrieve a book and get a new book, participate in a one-month educational course, learn a new language or focus on learning some quick skills
In long missions, I put training in the use of sensitive and precise tools, such as sharp tools used in surgeries. I like to practice using the scalpel in slicing the thin layer on the grapes. This helps me a lot in practicing the accuracy of my hand.
Of course, this dream did not come true, and I will not become a doctor now, but any dream begins with believing in it. So I devote my free time to benefit from it and learn useful things that may benefit me in the future.
Essay about free time
Leisure time is a favorite of many people, and it can be said that each person has his own nature to spend free time as he likes.
There are those who like to go out and celebrate or share some activities with their friends, or sit at home and sleep or do some quiet and simple things.
After long days of effort in studying, each person needs some requirements that make him regain his energy and feel better.
Activities I do in my spare time
1- Take a little walk alone in the early morning, jog a little, sit in the garden and watch the birds and the life that goes by and walks around me.
2- Touring the shops and seeing some new goods that I might want to buy.
3- Walking around in the evening with my friends, eating meals and soft drinks, talking and having a little fun.
In the event that any volunteer work appears in the area, I would very much like to participate in it and get to know some new people and talk to them, such as simple work cleaning gardens, cleaning the neighborhood in which we live, going to a nursing home for the elderly, going to the children’s hospital.
Such activities I like to do very much beside my normal life that I live so that I can appreciate life and know the blessings that I have and appreciate them and thank God for them.
Free time and hobbies essay
Free time is one of the favorite times for all students and they love to spend happy times and do some hobbies, whether sports or entertainment. Where the free time in the holidays comes after a long semester, it requires them to focus and diligence, prepare a lot of homework, and undergo many tests that stress and make them anxious for a long time.
Therefore, the student’s free time represents the opportunity to rejuvenate his activity, charge his body with energy, and release all the negative energy inside him. It is a good opportunity to relax and spend some time practicing hobbies.
Personally, I like to jog and play soccer. All the games that require long-distance running and the release of great energy. This helps me release the negative energy inside me and renews my activity and vitality.
I also like to go out in the evening, take a walk, and play electronic games with my friends, in order to relieve myself a little and feel a little relaxation that takes me away from stress and tension.
This is how I spend my free time and this helps me a lot. There may be other people who prefer different types of mathematics, but this is my favorite and I like to practice it a lot.
Free time paragraph in English
It is wonderful that there is free time away from study and constant mental effort. I often feel that the holidays and the free time I spend playing sports, or playing some electronic games have come in their time, and that I need to relax and stop thinking, even for a little bit.
It also allows us to return to society, mingle and learn some things away from constant study, go out for a walk and smell some fresh air, make friends, and live normally for some time before returning to study and strive for self-realization in this aspect.
So I enjoy a lot when my free time comes, whether in sports or outing and making new friends, or just playing electronic games, that’s how I spend my free time.
What do you do in your free time essay
In my spare time, I like to organize my day from morning to evening. In the morning, after waking up and having breakfast with my family members, I like to sit a little in the living room with my family members and watch any series or morning program, and talk to each other a little bit until the afternoon period comes.
Then, I get ready to go out to play football, I like to play this sport a lot with my team and friends, we keep playing and training until the early evening.
After that I go home and sit for a little while until 8 in the evening and then I go out for a walk with my friends. I am very happy with that because I learn from them many things that help me increase my confidence in myself, and I also learn things that help define my identity.

How I spend my free time Jovanka Kuzmanovska
When I am not in school or studying for tests and quizzes I spend my free time by doing many different, interesting and fun activities which help me relax like going out with my friends, reading a book, surfing the net and listening to music.
Going out with friends • I go out with my friend about 2 to 3 times a week mostly on the weekends or during the day. Sometimes we stay after school in the school yard and just talk or play volleyball. Other times we go to the movies which is about once to twice in 2 months, we go shopping or we just go over to each other’s house.
I like books of may different genres but mostly I read fantasizes like the Harry Potter series (which is also my favorite book) and the Lord of the Ring trilogy. I love music! I listen to all kinds of musical genres but I love songs that you can sing and dance to. I also attend the school curie and we go to competitions every year. Reading and music
Surfing the net • I surf the net very often during my free time. I usually talk with friends upload pictures on Facebook or listen to music. I also use the net to find out about some things that interest me but are not always connected with school.

How Successful People Spend Their Free Time : Thomas Salzano
Did you know startups fail about four times as often as they succeed? Do you know why it’s so hard to get a successful business off the ground? It’s attributable to a number of factors, one of which could be the way the founders are spending their spare time. The productivity you can generate in your free time often carries over into the success of your professional endeavors, and you can bet that successful people use their free time for much more than relaxing on the couch or binging on Netflix.

How to insert a clock in powerpoint.
Don't stare at the clock on the wall - insert a clock in PowerPoint to keep up with the time.
Quick Links
Inserting a clock in powerpoint, powerpoint’s built-in function, using online flash clocks for powerpoint.
Constantly glancing at a clock on a wall or at your watch to keep up with the time can be distracting and possibly come off as rude during a presentation. Keep your eyes on the presentation and remain focused by inserting a clock in your presentation.
There are a couple of ways to go about doing this. The first is using a built-in PowerPoint function that allows you to unobtrusively show the time and date in the presentation. This method isn’t a live method and only updates the time/date once you switch slides during the presentation. It's mostly handy if you want to keep an eye on the time.
The second method is adding a live clock, downloadable from several different third-party websites. Using this method allows you to show real-time updates during the presentation---not only when you switch slides. It's probably best used when you want to keep your audience's eyes on the presentation.
To use PowerPoint’s built-in function, go ahead and open the PowerPoint presentation we will be working with and head over to the “Insert” tab.
Here, find the “Text” section and select “Date & Time.”
Once selected, the “Header and Footer” window will appear. Here, check the box next to “Date and time” and select “Update automatically.” This will allow the date and time to update each time you change slides. Now, select the arrow next to the displayed date.
This will bring up several different date/time variations for you to choose from. Select the one you like best to use in your presentation. In this example, we’ll use the third option from the bottom, which shows the hour, minute, and second on a 24-hour clock.
If you’d like to leave this off of the title slide, simply check the box next to “Don’t show on title slide.” Once you’re ready, click “Apply to all” to insert the clock on all your slides.
You’ll now see date/time variation you selected appear at the bottom left of the presentation. The time and date that appears is the same as your system’s clock, so make sure it's set correctly.
As we said earlier, several different websites provide flash-based clocks that you can use for your presentation. We’ll be using a clock downloaded from Flash-Clocks in this example, but feel free to browse around and find a website you like, as the basic premise for making this work is the same.
Head over to the Flash-Clocks website and make sure to have Adobe Flash Player enabled. Once you’re there, you’ll find a large gallery of different clocks to choose from, ranging from analog to digital, and even antique. Choose the type you’d like to use. We’ll be taking a look at the digital options.
Browse through the large gallery of available clocks and find one you like. Once you find one, click the “HTML Tag Code” link found above the clock.
Here, you’ll find the embed code. Highlight and copy everything from http:// through .swf, as shown in the image below.
Head over to the address bar, paste the code, and then press “Enter.” If you’re using Chrome, you’ll receive a message telling you that this type of file can harm your computer. Since this is from a trusted website, you’re safe to go ahead and click “Keep.” This will download the .swf (Shockwave Flash Object) file to your computer.
To insert the file in PowerPoint, simply drag and drop. Similar to when you embed a YouTube video, you will only see a black box at first. That’s fine, as you will see the live clock during the presentation. Go ahead and resize and re-position the clock.
Once you’re happy with its size and position, copy and paste the box in each slide of the presentation.
Now once you play your presentation, the clock will appear in real-time!
Though this option may stand out a little more, this will allow you to have a real-time display of the current time throughout the entire presentation.
What is Good Friday? What the holy day means for Christians around the world
Christians around the world observe Good Friday two days before Easter, but what is it, and why do they commemorate the holy day?
The holiday is part of Holy Week, which leads up to Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday kicks off the series of Christian holy days that commemorate the Crucifixion and celebrate Jesus Christ's resurrection.
"Good Friday has been, for centuries now, the heart of the Christian message because it is through the death of Jesus Christ that Christians believe that we have been forgiven of our sins," Daniel Alvarez, an associate teaching professor of religious studies at Florida International University, told USA TODAY.
What is Holy Saturday? What the day before Easter means for Christians around the world
When is Good Friday?
Good Friday is always the Friday before Easter. It's the second-to-last day of Holy Week.
In 2024, Good Friday will fall on March 29.
What is Good Friday?
Good Friday is the day Christ was sacrificed on the cross. According to Britannica , it is a day for "sorrow, penance, and fasting."
"Good Friday is part of something else," Gabriel Radle, an assistant professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, previously told USA TODAY. "It's its own thing, but it's also part of something bigger."
Are Good Friday and Passover related?
Alvarez says that Good Friday is directly related to the Jewish holiday, Passover.
Passover , or Pesach, is a major Jewish holiday that celebrates the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt.
"The whole Christian idea of atoning for sin, that Jesus is our atonement, is strictly derived from the Jewish Passover tradition," said Alvarez.
How is that possible?
According to the professor, Passover celebrates the day the "Angel of Death" passed over the homes of Israelites who were enslaved by the Egyptians. He said that the Bible states when the exodus happened, families were told to paint their doors with lamb's blood so that God would spare the lives of their firstborn sons.
Alvarez says this is why Christians call Jesus the "lamb of God." He adds that the symbolism of the "blood of the lamb" ties the two stories together and is why Christians believe God sacrificed his firstborn son. Because, through his blood, humanity is protected from the "wrath of a righteous God that cannot tolerate sin."
He adds that the stories of the exodus and the Crucifixion not only further tie the stories together but also emphasize just how powerful the sacrifice of the firstborn and the shedding of blood are in religion.
"Jesus is the firstborn, so the whole idea of the death of the firstborn is crucial," said Alvarez.
He adds that the sacrifice of the firstborn, specifically a firstborn son, comes from an ancient and "primitive" idea that the sacrifice unleashes "tremendous power that is able to fend off any kind of force, including the wrath of God."
Why Is Good Friday so somber?
Alavarez says people might think this holiday is more depressing or sad than others because of how Catholics commemorate the Crucifixion.
"I think [it's] to a level that some people might think is morbid," said Alvarez.
He said Catholics not only meditate on Jesus' death, but primarily focus on the suffering he faced in the events that led up to his Crucifixion. That's what makes it such a mournful day for people.
But, the professor says that Jesus' suffering in crucial to Christianity as a whole.
"The suffering of Christ is central to the four Gospels," said Alvarez. "Everything else is incidental."
According to the professor, statues that use blood to emphasize the way Jesus and Catholic saints suffered is very common in Spanish and Hispanic Countries, but not as prevalent in American churches.
Do you fast on Good Friday?
Father Dustin Dought, the executive director of the Secretariat of Divine Worship of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, previously told USA TODAY that Good Friday and Ash Wednesday are the two days in the year that Roman Catholics are obliged to fast.
"This practice is a way of emptying ourselves so that we can be filled with God," said Dought.
What do you eat on Good Friday?
Many Catholics do not eat meat on any Friday during Lent. Anything with flesh is off-limits. Dought says this practice is to honor the way Jesus sacrificed his flesh on Good Friday.
Meat that is off limits includes:
Instead, many Catholics will eat fish. According to the Marine Stewardship Council , this is allowed because fish is considered to be a different type of flesh.

I deleted my email app. My mental health, free time, and productivity skyrocketed.
- I've deleted social media apps from my phone, but was still hooked to my email app.
- Deleting it freed up time in my day for more meaningful things.
- Checking my email less actually helped me to stay on top of my emails.
Deleting apps for the sake of my mental health and productivity is nothing new for me. Instagram and TikTok don't live on my phone; they're merely temporary tenants I let stop by on weekends. But as a self-employed writer, there's one app that's haunted me far more than social media: my email app.
Unlike social media, my email is inherently tied to my work. Where TikTok shows me trending dances, my inbox shows me all the people I've yet to respond to. Not to mention, email itself is work. I can dip into social media as I dip my hands into a rushing stream — delighting in the cool waters of a distracting video, then dip back out. With email, I am Sisyphus, desperately trying to scoop the whole stream into little buckets all day while the gods laugh at their sick joke — the stream never stops rushing.
It wasn't until I attended a small business workshop a few months ago that I latched onto a radical idea for curbing my email addiction . Toward the end of the workshop, the host offhandedly mentioned she hadn't had email on her phone since 2020. It had never occurred to me: you could just... delete your email app?
Staying on top of my email had become synonymous with staying on top of my work . But I had to know: what would happen if I ditched my email app and only checked my inbox on my computer a few times a day?
It immediately freed up my time for more meaningful work
From the first day, it became clear just how much time I wasted trying to stay on top of my inbox . Instead of focusing on my to-do list for the day, all too often I'd get sucked into requests from others.
Related stories
Over the coming weeks, it became easier to dive into my creative flow and focus on my own priorities when the temptation to check my email app was gone. I was no longer stuck on the hamster wheel of reacting to others' needs and subsequently sacrificing my own.
It transformed my work-life balance
When I first deleted my email app , I decided I would only check my desktop inbox three times a day: in the morning, at lunch, and at the end of my workday. The habit became a powerful signal of stepping in and out of my professional identity. I'd put on my metaphorical Writer Hat by checking my email in the morning, and I'd hang it up again when I checked my inbox in the afternoon.
My work stopped bleeding into evenings and weekends. While it was scary at first, I realized anyone who genuinely needed me in an emergency had my phone number and knew how to use it.
It actually helped me stay on top of my email
Paradoxically, I consistently live closer to Inbox Zero than I ever have. Before, checking my email multiple times an hour was an easy way to get a hit of feel-good chemicals to my brain.
Now that I check less frequently, I'm not browsing for a dopamine hit — I'm really there to check my email. I've been shocked to realize how much easier it is to handle my inbox in a few fell swoops throughout the day rather than sitting and hitting refresh all daylong.
I have more time for what matters
For me, keeping on top of my emails simply isn't as important as other work tasks. So why was I treating my inbox as one of my highest priorities by checking it all the time? My email app had become a facade of busyness and efficiency. By stepping away, I've found greater clarity and peace.
Anyone interested in the same is welcome to message me — just remember, it may take me a little while to get back your email.
