3. Next, create a dietary cook skills section on your resume

Your resume's skills section should include the most important keywords from the job description, as long as you actually have those skills. If you haven't started your job search yet, you can look over resumes to get an idea of what skills are the most important.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing your resume's skills section:

  • Include 6-12 skills, in bullet point form
  • List mostly hard skills ; soft skills are hard to test
  • Emphasize the skills that are most important for the job

Hard skills are generally more important to hiring managers because they relate to on-the-job knowledge and specific experience with a certain technology or process.

Soft skills are also valuable, as they're highly transferable and make you a great person to work alongside, but they're impossible to prove on a resume.

Example of skills to include on an dietary cook resume

The food service industry is a vast industry comprising of restaurants, caterers, cafeterias operating in institutions and any other business offering a meal not prepared at home. Foodservice operators require necessary utensils for preparing food for the consumers, foodservice distributors are the people who take care of this need for them.

Kitchen Equipment refers to all those essential items which are crucial for the task of cooking.

A Meal Service is a service provided by a company or an organization in which food is provided to a group of people. Homeless shelters provide a meal service, for example, but so do many education facilities, like high schools. Some companies provide their employees with meal service, though unlike for some of the other kinds of meal service, employees must pay for this food out of their own pocket.

Diet Orders are the instructions given to a patient and/or the family and caretakers of a patient, by a medical and healthcare professional, in relation to said individual's dietary and generally food and drink-related needs. These might be given to a person for a number of reasons and can apply for a short, specific amount of time or can be life-long. Some surgeries, for example, require that all or some specific foods are not ingested a number of hours prior to the surgery, while some diseases, like diabetes, can affect a person's whole diet.

Customer service is the process of offering assistance to all the current and potential customers -- answering questions, fixing problems, and providing excellent service. The main goal of customer service is to build a strong relationship with the customers so that they keep coming back for more business.

State regulations are the rules made by the state authorities under a specific Act. When a government intervenes in the private market to implements policies, they are known as state regulations. These policies help in achieving the economic, political, and social targets which might not be able to achieve otherwise.

4. List your dietary cook experience

The most important part of any resume for a dietary cook is the experience section. Recruiters and hiring managers expect to see your experience listed in reverse chronological order, meaning that you should begin with your most recent experience and then work backwards.

Don't just list your job duties below each job entry. Instead, make sure most of your bullet points discuss impressive achievements from your past positions. Whenever you can, use numbers to contextualize your accomplishments for the hiring manager reading your resume.

It's okay if you can't include exact percentages or dollar figures. There's a big difference even between saying "Managed a team of dietary cooks" and "Managed a team of 6 dietary cooks over a 9-month project. "

Most importantly, make sure that the experience you include is relevant to the job you're applying for. Use the job description to ensure that each bullet point on your resume is appropriate and helpful.

  • ServSafe Alcohol
  • Certified Food Manager (CFM)
  • Food Safety Manager Certification
  • Certified Dietary Manager (CDM)
  • ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification
  • Certified Professional - Food Safety (CP-FS)

Over a dozen transitional mental health homes planned for Colorado

D ENVER ( KDVR ) — Northglenn neighbors raised concerns this week about a mental health care home set for their community, but the facility is just one of more than a dozen planned for Colorado.

Lawmakers in 2022 passed a bill that calls for an increase in behavioral health living accommodations. The so-called “mental health transitional living homes” are meant to help people over 18 with severe mental health conditions transition from hospitals toward an independent life in the community.

“Clients may stay as long as necessary for stabilization with an ultimate goal of reintegrating clients successfully in the community,” according to the Colorado Department of Human Services . “The focus is to provide continued support with social and life skills development, as well as assistance with other daily life activities based on the client’s individual needs.”

The Colorado Office of Civil and Forensic Mental Health will run the program and divide the homes into two levels of care.

Level 1 homes are for people who are almost ready to live independently but may need additional help with everyday tasks. Level 2 homes are for people who need more care and will include intensive case managers and on-site psychiatric care.

More information about the program, including how people are admitted, is available on the Colorado Department of Human Services website .

Mental health transitional living homes planned in Colorado

Here is where homes are planned, according to the state :

  • Colorado Springs: Three homes
  • Denver: Two homes
  • Lakewood: Three homes
  • Littleton: One home
  • Northglenn: Two homes
  • Pueblo West: Two homes

Some of the homes have already opened, with the rest set to open on a rolling basis in 2024, according to the department. The state will run 24 beds across three homes in Westminster and Pueblo, while others will be contracted.

For the initial rollout, admissions will be limited to referrals from Colorado’s state mental health hospitals, as the program was created to address a backlog of needed care in the state’s hospitals.

“While it is a long-term goal for the homes to be able to admit individuals from the community, the primary goal is to alleviate the waitlist for the mental health hospitals by stepping down the individuals who have been awaiting appropriate community-based resources,” according to the state human services department.

Two facilities in Northglenn previously used as senior care centers will now be used as transitional housing for people with severe mental health conditions. (KDVR)
