Commissioner identifies negative peer influence, other factors militating against children

Delta State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, has advised students and youths generally to shun drug abuse, sexual immorality, cultism and other social vices, saying they are the critical factors militating against their successes in life.   Ezewu stated this while speaking during an advocacy visit to schools across the state.

She enjoined students to desist from indulging in negative lifestyle that could ruin their lives, adding that children, in most cases, succumb to peer group influence to feel accepted.

Principal, Government Model Secondary School, Asaba, Dr. Obiajulu Eboka, commended  Ezewu and Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in particular for considering it important to conduct mentorship programme for students on yearly basis.   Eboka, who also lauded officials of the state ministry of education, particularly the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Augustine Oghoro, and Director of  Schools in the ministry, Mrs. Clementina  Ojumah, pledged to continue to give the children positive reorientation about life .

Earlier, Oghoro who urged students in the area to develop positive attitude to learning, emphasised the strong need for students to embrace reading culture.

Oghoro told the students that they now have opportunity to attain greatness in life, adding that the ministry will do everything humanly possible to impact their lives, positively.

BY MAGNUS EMUJI

The immediate past Commissioner for Secondary Education in Delta State, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, has been described as a quintessential educationalist whose systematic approach contributed immensely to the achievements recorded in the education sector by the immediate past administration of Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa.

The Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Sir Augustine Oghoro, stated this in Asaba during a valedictory session/ sendforth for the Commissioner.

Sir Oghoro said that the former Commissioner for Secondary Education operated open door policy and carried everybody along in the scheme of things.

He noted that the immediate past Commissioner  the Ministry discharged her duties with utmost commitment and diligence, adding that Mrs. Ezewu was an uncommon asset to the education sector.

In their separate goodwill messages, the Director of Administration, Mr. Henry Odum , his counterpart in charge of the Schools Department, Mrs. Kehinde Oderehwo, the Director of Examinations and Records, Mr. Sunday Egomagwuna, Director of Adult and Non-Formal Education, Comrade Ernest Ossai and the  Director of Science Education, Mrs. Hope Igumbor, as well as the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr. Anthony Akponovo said the Commissioner gave them the free hand to discharge their duties without hindrance.

While describing the outgoing Commissioner as a mother with listening ears, a team player and an administrator with high sense of humility, the Directors prayed for her and wished her well in her future endeavours.

They appealed to the present administration of RT. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to reappoint her as the next Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, stressing that her achievements in the Okowa administration were unprecedented.

The Department of Education Resource Centre (ERC) was represented by a Deputy Director,  Dr.(Mrs.) Joyce Ogu.

Delta Commissioner, Principals At War Over N20,000 Gov’s Portrait

Sportybet

Secondary school principals in Delta State and the commissioner for secondary education, Mrs Rose Ezewu, have disagreed over N20,000 meant to buy the governor’s portraits by each principal.

The principals have threatened to shut down schools unless the alleged imposed decision meant to rake in over N20 million from the 489 principals and 25 chief inspectors of education (CIEs) is reversed.

The commissioner was said to have constituted education monitoring taskforce team, led by one Tony Edah, to compel all principals in the state to pay the N20,000 on or before the end of the month for the governor’s portrait.

When contacted on phone, Ezewu neither picked her calls nor respond to messages sent to her contact.

According to sources, the monitoring taskforce team and the principals recently met at Osubi Grammar School where the issue was discussed and it was learnt that the commissioner has appointed one Israel Akpokeri in the ministry, to inform the principals and CIEs on the need to comply.

The matter degenerated to bad blood and fiasco when it was leant that Ezewu hurriedly set up the monitoring task force team without involving the ministry.

“The governor’s photo and her own are compulsory for all public secondary schools at a cost of N20,000 each, targeted at a whooping sum of N20.560 million from 489 public secondary school principals and 25 CIEs in the state.”

The principals and the CIEs are to collect the governor’s portraits and that of the commissioner at the Ministry of Education after payment or face the wrath of the commissioner.

“I am directed to inform principals and CIES to collect the photograph of His Excellency and that of the HC secondary at the office of the honourable commissioner. This is to be placed in the CIES’ offices and all principals’ office,” Akpokeri stated.

Following this development, the taskforce team went into action, raiding schools to collect the said money from the school authorities, but with resistance from majority of the principals who were poised to fight to finish this time around, and paralyse this session’s academic activities.

Some of the principals who spoke yesterday but would not want their names printed for fear of being victimised by the commissioner, said, “Enough is enough, because the commissioner has been milking us since she returns in this second time on the ground that nothing would happen, after all.”

They also claimed that the commissioner had visited them at various times both in Ughelli, Warri and other places for her endless drive for incentives and that she is now moving from one CIEs office to another also expecting same entertainment from them.

She was said to be going round on familiarisation visit without being accompanied by the permanent secretary and director of the ministry but instead parading one Mr Israel Akpokeri as a director in the ministry, a development that infuriated the stakeholders who claimed that the Akpokeri is never a director in the ministry, or “let the commissioner show the world the department that Israel is heading.”

The principals called for the governor’s urgent intervention by investigating the matter with a view to righting the wrong.

EDUCATION STAKEHOLDERS LAUD ROSE EZEWU, SEEK REDEPLOYMENT OF PERMANENT SECRETARY

' src=

Stakeholders in Education on Monday described the Delta State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu as a woman of integrity and principle.

The stakeholders met under the aegis of Delta State Private and Public-School Principals Forum (DSPPSPF) on Sunday in Ozoro, headquarters of Isoko North Local Government Area.

rose ezewu biography

In a statement issued by the group’s spokesperson, Mr. Pius Iyoyin on Monday morning, the stakeholders scolded the permanent secretary, some top officials of the ministry and those behind them for encouraging anarchy.

‘’It is part of a desperate effort by the permanent secretary and his co-Travellers to control the ministry, promote chaos and turn back the clock on the progress so far made.”

The angry school administrators described the recent invitation of a retired director as selfish.

‘’ Mrs. Rose Ezewu is an honest and highly effective leader. She has built a reputation anchored on integrity over the years. She is a fountain of quality advice, inspiration, encouragement and hope. She deserves the biggest thanks for being a team player and using her undivided and thorough leadership style in growing the ministry, rejecting the retired director and stopping the plot of some top civil servants in the ministry to defraud principals of their full entitlement,” the stakeholders said.

They attributed media attack on the commissioner and the inciting of principals on the fact that she has refused to do some people’s bidding.

“Mrs. Rose Ezewu, an excellent administrator and a dogged fighter for justice and fairness, has refused to run the ministry according to their dictates. They are angry because of the refusal of the Hon Commissioner to allow a retired Director from Exams and standards to handle the payment of examination grants to principals. These top civil servants are willing to do anything to control the ministry for their selfish ends.”

The stakeholders commended Ezewu for bringing about a more dynamic way of administering the affairs of the ministry.

They praised Ezewu for having the type of empathy and direction the sector needs, bringing people around to her way by dint of example and argument and liberating the ministry from dirty politics.

The stakeholders also praised Ezewu for having the courage to speak out, putting up a brave front and discharging her duties as commissioner.

“Mrs. Rose Ezewu is well known for her innovative ideas and clean image. She is down to earth, clear sighted about issues facing the education sector in the oil rich state and cares about ethics.”

Particularly, the stakeholders thanked Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the confidence reposed on the commissioner.

Delta government remains committed to quality teaching: Commissioner

Rose Ezewu, the commissioner for secondary education, says the Delta government is committed to improving the quality of teaching in public schools.

Rose Ezewu

Ms Ezewu spoke at the opening of a meeting of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the State Examination Committee on Wednesday in Asaba.

She said the Ifeanyi Okowa-led government would continue to take steps toward improving the teaching and learning environment in the students’ interest.

The commissioner stated that the state government was open to ideas for making the education sector more productive.

Ms Ezewu said the meeting was to review the conduct of the last West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in the state.

”We need to appraise the performance of candidates from the state. We also need to recommend ways to conduct more credible examinations in the future,” she said.

She said the ministry had inaugurated an examination ethics and disciplinary committee to ensure sanity during examinations.

”Their mandate is to examine reported cases of involvement in malpractices against any principal, supervisor and teacher,” she said.

Ms Ezewu commended WAEC for the successful conduct of the May/June 2022 examination and the prompt release of the results.

Sunday Egomagwuna, director of examination and standard, described the meeting as a good opportunity to correct past wrongs.

”It is important to make meaningful inputs as we progress. We owe society a duty to conduct credible examinations,” said Egomagwuna.

Delta ministry of lands staff celebrate immediate past commissioner

242243294_224061876298234_6521564000644463253_n

By Ajuwa Victor

June 1, 2023

There was an outpouring of love, affection and goodwill om Wednesday in Asaba between the immediate past Commissioner for Lands and Surveys in Delta state, Mrs. Kate Onianwa, and staff of the ministry who treated her to a sendoff party.

Staff of the ministry rated Mrs. Onianwa as the best commissioner the ministry ever had, who they said, came, saw and conquered the animosity, bitterness and diabolism that characterized the ministry.

The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Gladys Peugeren, described Onianwa as a woman of substance, a trail blazer, a workaholic, and a go-getter.

She noted that the former commissioner successfully threaded where men feared, pointing out that she was a passionate mother, generous to a fault and always committed to putting smiles on the faces of people in need.

The Director of Admin, Emmanuel Ovuezirie; Director of Finance and Accounts, Paul Ataine; Director of Lands, Pastor Steve Edremoda; and Director of Mapping and Geoinformatics, Office of the Surveyor General of Delta State, Surveyor John Jibunor, all spoke in same vein.

Others were the Secretary, Land Use and Allocation Committee, Mr Joshua Ekakiti; Councillor representing PDP ward 8, Ibusa, in the Oshimili North Local Government Council, Anthony Nweke; a retired employee of the Ministry, Elder John Egbunike; Miss Chioma Okoye and Evangelist Moses Uduoborie.

They added that the tenure of the ex-commissioner was a blessing to the ministry, adding that she succeeded in unifying all the departments of the ministry and engendered love among staff.

The speakers thanked former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for appointing Mrs Onianwa into the State Executive Council and assigning her to the Ministry of Lands and Surveys, even as they appealed to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to reappoint her to an office of higher responsibility.

Responding, the former commissioner admitted that presiding over the affairs of the Ministry of Lands and Surveys was not an easy task, but that with God on her side she threaded through the thorny road, using love for one another in the Ministry as a weapon.

Mrs Kate Onianwa thanked her former aides and staff of the Ministry for celebrating her, even as she said it did not come to her as a surprise, and promised that the bond she had with the staff of the Ministry would be sustained, as she would be calling from time to time to check up on everyone of them.

She confessed enjoying her stay in the ministry and urged the management and staff to strengthen the existing cordial relationship between them, saying it would permanently neutralize the stigma of acrimony and bitterness in the ministry and make the best of their careers.

The event featured the presentation of gifts to the ex-commissioner, who in turn rewarded those she adjudged to be the most punctual, most dedicated and best dressed staff members with cash gifts.

Similarly, the immediate past Commissioner for Secondary Education in Delta State, Mrs. Rose Ezewu has been described as a quintessential educationalist whose systematic approach contributed immensely towards the achievements recorded in the education sector by the immediate past administration of Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Augustine Oghoro stated this in Asaba during a valedictory session/ sendforth for the commissioner.

Oghoro said that the former commissioner operated an open-door policy and carried everybody along in the scheme of things.

He noted that Ezewu carried out her job with utmost commitment and diligence, adding that she was an uncommon asset to the education sector.

In their separate goodwill messages, the Director of Administration, Mr. Henry Odum, and his counterpart in charge of the Schools Department, Mrs. Kehinde Oderehwo, said that the commissioner gave them free hand to discharge their duties without hindrance.

Others who added their voices to the outpour of encomiums included the Director of Examinations and Records, Mr. Sunday Egomagwuna, Director of Adult and Non-Formal Education, Comrade Ernest Ossai and the Director of Science Education, Mrs. Hope Igumbor as well as the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr. Anthony Akponovo.

While describing the outgone commissioner as a mother with a listening ear and a team player, as well as, an administrator with a high sense of humility, the directors prayed and wished her well in her future endeavour.

They appealed to the present administration of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to appoint her as the next Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, stressing that her achievements in the Okowa led administration was unprecedented.

Responding, Mrs. Ezewu commended the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Augustine Oghoro, the Directors and staff of the Ministry for their support, pointing out that she would not have achieved much without them.

Ezewu, who also expressed gratitude to former Governor Okowa for appointing her as Commissioner for Secondary Education in his administration.
