Overview of academic dress.

The origins of today’s academic dress including the robe, hood and classical cap trace back to the first universities in medieval times. Students wore long, sober clothing reflecting their status in society and identifying them as scholars.Whilst fashions changed, the sense of purpose and propriety evoked by formal academic dress along with practicalities of marking students out in a crowd ensured that the traditional garments were kept.

Many Oxbridge colleges, schools and some ecclesiastical services still use the gown and hood, however it is more commonly seen at degree ceremonies.

PLACING YOUR ORDER

Q. I'm not sure what degree I am on. A. Unfortunately, we are unable to tell you what you have been studying for, please ask your course tutor or the university or college registry.

Q. How can I confirm that my order has been placed? A. You can see if your order has been placed by accessing the Review / Amend order screen which can be entered from the home page drop down menu.

Q. I am unable to print my confirmation e-mail - can I collect my gown without it? A. It is not imperative that you have the printed copy, but take a note of the number - which can be found on the Review / Amend order screen, as it does speed things up at the ceremony, in any event, our representatives will have detailed lists on the day of your ceremony.

Q. What forms of payment do you accept? A. Credit Cards: Visa, Mastercard  Debit cards: Visa Debit, Maestro and Electron

Q. Can I go into my nearest shop to place my order in person? A.  In order for us to process the orders efficiently, orders should be placed via the website or the Call Centre.

Q. Can I go into my nearest shop to have my measurements taken for my outfit? A.  Sorry we do not provide this service in our shops.

ABOUT YOUR GRADUATION OUTFIT

Q. What does 'Height' mean? A. Your height means the measurement from the top of your head to the ground. This can be in metres or feet and inches.

Q. What does full outfit mean? A. Full outfit means all the required items for the award that you are receiving and is usually a gown, hood and hat although this varies according to the institution.

Q. How will I know how to wear the outfit? A. We will help you put it on and ensure you are wearing it correctly.  

WHEN TO PLACE YOUR ORDER

Q. How much notice is required before I book my graduation outfit? A. Please book early to be sure of your order as we cannot always guarantee an order if you leave your booking later than 21 days before your Ceremony (being the date agreed for the Hire outfit to be available). Please check the website to see if the ceremony date option is still available or contact the Call Centre to establish if it is still open to book.

Q. What can I do if I am too late to order my outfit on-line? A. You may be able to place a late order. Go to the enquiry desk in the robing area early on the day of your ceremony and our staff will do their best to help you. We are usually only able to accept cash or cheques at the ceremony. Please note we cannot guarantee we will be able to provide robes for late orders.

DELIVERY, COLLECTION AND RETURNS

Q. When will my purchased outfit arrive? A. This will depend on the type of outfit you have ordered. The dispatch time will be stated on your shopping basket when placing your order on the internet. Please make a note of this.

Q. Where do I collect my outfit from? A. Your university or college has set aside a special area for you to collect your outfit and put it on. Details are normally given to you in your handout regarding ceremony arrangements. Please confirm with your registry.

Q. Will I receive my purchased accessories with my hire outfit? A. Hire orders will be delivered direct to your graduation ceremony. All purchased orders will be delivered to your specified delivery address (not your institution).

Q. When can I collect my outfit? A. Details will have been given to you by your university or college, however as a general rule Ede and Ravenscroft will normally be available to robe you at least two hours before the ceremony.

Q. What does Extra Time mean? A. The normal hire fee is usually for the ceremony day (or evening if it is just an evening ceremony). This enables you to wear the outfit for your graduation ceremony and have private and official photos taken if you want. If you opt for Extra 7 days hire you can take the robes away from where you had your graduation ceremony and keep them for one week, returning them to us in the postage paid bag provided. Instructions regarding the use of this bag are listed inside the bag. You must obtain proof of posting. You are not allowed to take your outfit out of the United Kingdom.

Q. Can I return my outfit to my nearest Ede & Ravenscroft shop? A.  Please return all postal items as requested to the address as stated in the back of your gown.

Preparing to graduate

Your graduation is an official celebration of your accomplishments during your time at the University of Manchester. These pages have all the information you need to be fully prepared ahead of the big day.

Register for a ceremony online

Registration for the rescheduled ceremonies is now closed.

When you register through Ede and Ravenscroft, you can choose which of your School’s ceremonies you would prefer to attend.

• Select your award/degree
• After you have confirmed your selection, go to Ticketing then Order
• Complete the required steps and select Proceed to gown hire or Add to bag

Once you have added everything to your bag, select the bag (top right) and then Proceed to checkout. You can indicate any special needs or access requirements at this stage.

Follow the steps on the website to complete your order. You do not have to hire or purchase your robes at the same time as you register for a ceremony.  

Choosing a ceremony:

When you register, you can choose which of your School’s ceremonies you would prefer to attend - please see this  list of Faculties and Schools  if you're unsure of which School's ceremony you should attend.

Ceremonies are open to all graduates whose ceremonies were postponed in 2020 or 2021. Graduates from both years will be in each ceremony. Ceremonies are organised by School, rather than degree cohort - you can  view the schedule of ceremonies here.  

Some ceremonies are listed for specific cohorts. Graduates from these cohorts can choose a different ceremony for their School if they prefer. For example, only NHS workers who graduated from the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health (FBMH) can register for an All graduating NHS colleagues in FBMH ceremony. However, NHS workers from FBMH can register for a different ceremony for their School if they prefer.  

 If demand for any two consecutive ceremonies is low, they may be merged and will start at the later time of the two ceremonies. Ceremonies are subject to availability.   

If more than one of your ceremonies was postponed:

If more than one of your graduation ceremonies was postponed, you will only be able to attend one ceremony.

Most graduates will choose a ceremony for the School from which they received the highest award. However you can choose a ceremony from any School that you graduated from.

Your guests:

When you register you can reserve two tickets for your guests for the ceremony, which are free. Guest tickets are not transferable.

Extra guests will be able to watch a screening of your ceremony on campus. You will not need tickets for the screening. Your ceremony will also be streamed online.

Access for disabled students:

When you register, please let us know if you have any access requirements so we can make arrangements to ensure your ceremony goes smoothly. For example, there is a lift to access the stage at graduation ceremonies but we need to be aware when it's required. Please contact our Student Services Centre on 0161 275 5000 if you have any requirements such as:

• Wheelchair access
• Guide or assistance dog 
• Temporary physical disability (e.g. broken leg)
• Other individual needs or access requirements

Decide how your information will be used:

Graduation programme: The official graduation programme will include your name and School, but not your programme, individual award or classification. If you don’t want your name to be included, please email [email protected] by Friday 4 March 2022. Make sure to include "graduation programme" in the subject line.

If you can't attend

Most graduates have told us that they will celebrate with us in March or April. Our March and April ceremonies will provide the very best graduation experience and chance to celebrate with your classmates, family and friends. 

However, we know that some of you will not be able to attend due to holiday/annual leave entitlement and/or being unable to travel to the UK. 

If you cannot attend for these reasons, you can register your interest in attending an event which will be held in July 2022.  We will send you more information about the July event(s) by email during or before the week beginning Monday, 2 May 2022. 

Details of these event(s) are to be confirmed. They will not be traditional ceremonies like our March and April ceremonies, however you will be able to walk across the Whitworth Hall stage, wear academic dress (robes) and have photographs taken. 

Any event(s) in July will not be organised by School, Faculty or graduation year. This means you may not be in the same event as any classmates or friends.

Graduation checklist

If you plan to attend an in-person graduation ceremony, there are a few things you can do in advance to get prepared for your graduation day. 

Hire a cap and gown

Hiring your academic dress

You must wear official academic dress (a gown, hood and cap) to your ceremony. You should book these online through Ede and Ravenscroft , or call them on +44 (0)1223 861854.

Collecting:

Your hired academic dress will be available from the Robing and Photography marquee in the Graduation Village.

You can collect your items up to two hours before your graduation ceremony.

You must have your Ede and Ravenscroft order number to collect your items.

You must keep the name label and pin, for returning your items after the ceremony.

You may find it useful to bring hair pins to hold your hat in place (if you have long hair), and a safety pin for your hood.

We request that you don't throw mortarboards for photos etc. - you may damage them, and unfortunately we have had some injuries in the past caused by flying mortarboards!

You must return all hired items to where you collected them after your ceremony (unless you have paid to keep your gown for an extra week).

For 10am, 12 noon, 2pm and 4pm ceremonies, items must be returned by 6pm that day. For 6pm ceremonies, items must be returned by 7.30pm that day.

What to wear with your academic dress:

Your clothes will still be clearly visible under your gown. We expect that everyone will dress formally, as is appropriate to the occasion.

Photography and video

Filming and photographing the ceremony:

Our graduation ceremonies are professionally filmed and broadcast live - all graduates and guests should be aware that you may feature in the footage and/or images. These may be used by The University of Manchester for media publications and advertising. 

By registering to take part in your ceremony, or by your guests entering a graduation venue, you are giving permission for your image to be captured in the live broadcast or by our official photographer.

You are welcome to take your own photos or video, but we ask that you remain seated and please try not to disturb or block the view of others around you.

 Getting an official graduation photo:

If you want to get an official graduation photo of yourself and your guests, our authorised graduation photographers H Tempest Ltd offer a range of services.

Official photography will be available throughout all the graduation days in the Robing and Photography marque - there is no need to book, just make sure you alllow plenty of time to get to your ceremony in time. We advise you have your photos taken before your ceremony, to avoid queues.

We advise you to be cautious of any other unauthorised photographer who may approach you about graduation.

Official photography is optional - you and your guests are welcome to take your own photos around campus at any time before, during, or after the ceremony. 

Get details of your celebrations

Main graduation celebrations will be held in the Celebrations marquee  in the Graduation Village, which is located on  Dilworth Street Car-Park, outside the Contact Theatre building.

Graduates and your guests [a maximum of two] are invited to join the post ceremony celebrations within the marquee immediately after your ceremony. Tickets will be required to enter the Marquee and these will be issued when Graduates Register on the Day along with your graduate seat number, and your two guest tickets for entry to the ceremony in Whitworth Hall.  You will need to provide these upon entry into the Celebrations marquee so please ensure you keep them safe. 

Celebration timings:

To help with the running of the day and to ensure a smooth transition between graduation ceremony groups, the following timings have been allocated for drinks receptions:

Arrange visas

If you are living outside the UK, depending on your nationality you may need a visa to enter the UK and attend a graduation ceremony. This applies to both graduating students and their guests .  Find out if you need a visa to visit the UK .

If you no longer have valid Student/Tier 4 immigration permission and you are planning to return to the UK to attend your graduation ceremony, you will need to apply for a  Standard Visitor visa .

Getting to campus:

Our graduation ceremonies take place in Whitworth Hall, in the centre of our Oxford Road campus. Graduation celebrations, registration, robing and photography will be located in the Graduation Village at Dilworth Street, Manchester M15 6JA. Car parking:

During busy events like graduation, parking on and near campus is extremely limited. We strongly recommend that wherever possible you walk, cycle or use public transport instead (see the guides above for further information).

There are six car parks on campus with a mixture of permit and public parking. Find out more about car parking on campus .

Disabled access, parking and other services

Blue badge drop-off and parking:

URGENT UPDATE: Currently Dover Street is closed and Burlington Street is not accessible via this road.  Burlington Street is now accessible via Grafton Street (turn right at lights down Oxford Road)

A drop-off point will be available in the front quad for people holding a blue badge, however vehicles cannot be left here. To access this point, drive from Grafton Street across Oxford Road into Burlington Street, through the barrier and turn right into the quad. After drop off, exit the same way. You cannot drive up or down Oxford Road as it is restricted access (only buses, black cabs and cyclists from 6am to 9pm every day).

Blue badge parking is available in Car Park D, Booth Street West. When arriving at the barrier, please retain your ticket and visit the parking lodge before exiting, where staff will validate your ticket.

BSL interpretation: This is available upon request - please let us know when you register if you need BSL interpreters at the ceremony and if you or your guests need to be seated in clear sight of them. Please call the Student Services Centre on 0161 275 5000.

Guide / assistance dogs: Assistance dogs are permitted in Whitworth Hall. If you require special seating or any other arrangements please let us know when registering to graduate. Please call the Student Services Centre 0161 275 5000.

We will do everything possible to make sure your graduation ceremony goes ahead. However if a ceremony has to be postponed or rescheduled due to actions, events, omissions or non-events beyond our reasonable control, The University of Manchester will not be liable for any losses (direct or otherwise) incurred by graduands or their guests.  This may include (without limitation) acts of God, riots, war, acts of terrorism, epidemic or pandemic, fire, flood, storm, earthquake or strike action.

General Information

When is Commencement 2024?

Wednesday, May 8 – Saturday, May 11 . 2024. More than 100 commencement events will celebrate the conferral of 18,000+ degrees. Check ceremony times and locations for all of the schools and special events.

 What are the different ceremonies?

The focal point of Commencement is the Academic School Ceremonies where students gather with their academic peers and cross the stage as their name is called to receive their diploma. Each school features a speaker related to their chosen disciplines. This is the highlight for family and friends and the culmination of the student’s academic career, honoring the work they have completed. They are held at various times and locations: check the schedule for more specifics.

Do students have to register for Commencement? Everyone who intends to participate in Commencement — students, family and friends — will need to sign up for tickets. More details will be provided in the near future.

When does the graduate need to arrive on campus on Commencement Day?

Campus access for Commencement events will begin at 8:00 a.m. Since Commencement activities will be ticketed and all students, guests and staff will need to clear security checkpoints, we recommend graduates arrive at least two hours before their ceremony to ensure ample time to enter the campus for their event.

When should guests arrive on Commencement Day?

Will the ceremonies be broadcast for those unable to attend?

Yes, for those who cannot join us in Los Angeles, all in-person ceremonies will be broadcast online, live, and on-demand for future viewing.

How do I participate in social media?

When posting to your social media, please use the hashtag #uscgrad.

In addition to the in-person Commencement ceremonies on campus, will there be other school-specific events?

Many schools will host a reception before or after their ceremonies. Individual school units will contact their students directly with more information, or check your school’s commencement page .

Will wheelchairs be available for disabled guests?

Wheelchairs  are available to check out on a first-come, first-served basis on commencement day only, Friday May 10 th . Checkout begins at 8:00 a.m. and all chairs must be returned by 9:00 p.m. Checkout is located on the north side of Leavey Library off 34 th  street.

Please note: If you need a wheelchair on Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday, or on Friday after 9:00 p.m., you will need to bring your own.

Does USC have any travel and accommodation recommendations?

If you are traveling from outside of the Los Angeles area for Commencement, it is highly recommended to reserve accommodations early. Regardless of the plans you make, please review cancellation policies closely. Commencement schedules could be subject to change based on health and safety considerations.

• The hotel adjacent to the USC main campus is the  USC Hotel .
• Visit  Discover Los Angeles for a handy listing of hotels by price, location, and amenities. When searching, select “Downtown/LA Metro” for the nearest adjacent neighborhood to USC.

Other popular visitor neighborhoods—Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, and Pasadena, offer a variety of hotels at different price points.

How do I know if I am eligible to graduate? Students will need to check their degree status with the Office of the Registrar, Degree Progress.

Do I need to attend the in-person Commencement ceremonies to have my degree conferred?

No, graduates do not need to attend to have their degree conferred.

Will my name be called at my Academic School Ceremony if I cannot attend in person?

Please contact your school’s commencement coordinator to inquire if there will be any opportunities available to have your name announced or listed virtually at your school ceremony in your absence.

Will my Doctoral Hooding take place this year?

Yes. Ph.D. candidates will be invited to official hooding ceremonies held by The USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism; The USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences; The USC Marshall School of Business; The USC Rossier School of Education; and The USC Viterbi School of Engineering. Ceremony day and times will vary. Students will be contacted directly by their school’s coordinator. Family and friends can check the Full Schedule for location and timing.

I will be finishing my degree requirements next fall (2024).  Can I participate in this year’s graduation ceremony?

Certain schools have rules about which spring (before or after) a winter graduate can participate in for the Academic School Ceremonies. Please contact your school’s commencement coordinator and/or academic advisor to inquire. Students who decide to walk early are  not eligible to wear a university Honor Cord.

Do I need to wear regalia for the in-person Commencement ceremonies ?

Yes, regalia is available to rent or purchase through the USC Bookstore .

Will regalia be shipped to my home, or can I pick up on campus?

You can order your regalia via the USC Bookstore website . The deadline to order Cap and Gown Rentals to ship to your home is April 7, 2024.

After April 7th regalia can be rented only in-person at the Bookstore. In-person distribution begins May 6th until May 10th.

Can I rent regalia the day of my Commencement ceremony?

A limited amount of regalia will be available to rent outside of the Bookstore on commencement day. To avoid waiting in possible long lines, we recommend ordering in advance via the USC Bookstore .

How do I return my regalia after the in-person Commencement ceremonies?

All rented regalia should be dropped off in the return bins located around campus following your ceremony. Permanent bins will be placed in front of the Bookstore.

Can I keep my cap and tassel that came with my rented regalia?

Yes, the cap and tassel are yours to keep

Honor Cords

How do graduates get honor cords?

Honor cords are only given to undergraduate students who have a minimum overall GPA of 3.5. Students must meet these averages, for both USC coursework and on combined transferred and USC coursework. University honors is then determined by either the USC GPA or the combined USC and transfer GPA,  whichever is lower .

You will be contacted by your school’s commencement coordinator or academic advisor during the spring semester if you are eligible to receive one. They are free of charge.

Where do I pick up my honor cord?

Honor cords are provided by your individual school. You will be contacted by their team and instructed on how to pick up your cord.

Diplomas, Program Book, Yearbook

When will I get my diploma?

Diplomas are distributed by the Office of the Registrar, Degree Progress. They will be mailed to your permanent address approximately six weeks after degrees are conferred on May 10.

When and where do I receive my diploma cover?

Diploma covers are distributed to students at their school’s in-person ceremony.

Will my name be listed in the 2024 commencement program?

If you have worked with Degree Progress to confirm that your requirements are complete, you will be listed in the program.

How do I get a copy of the 2024 commencement program?

You will be able to download a copy of the program from the commencement website and virtual platform.

How do I take my yearbook/graduation photo?

USC’s yearbook,  El Rodeo , partners with Lauren Studios to take portraits each fall semester.  For more information about  portrait appointments ,  dedications , and  other yearbook questions , please see  the  El Rodeo  website.

How will yearbooks be issued out to purchasers?

When  ordering the yearbook , purchasers may elect to pick up the book on campus or have the book shipped directly to domestic addresses. Student Publications will be in contact directly with purchasers to provide pick-up information and shipping notifications.  For questions related to yearbook orders, see  the El Rodeo website .

Will there be any COVID policies and restrictions in place when visiting USC’s campus for Commencement?

Currently no restrictions or limitations for visitors coming to campus. If you have any symptoms or are currently in isolation/quarantine period due to a recent infection or exposure, you may not attend.
