Table of Contents

Descriptive Essay Writing: Key Takeaways

  • Descriptive essays strive to create a vivid experience for the reader through concrete details and sensory language.
  • The purpose of descriptive writing is to provide an engaging representation of the subject, aiding in forming understanding.
  • Through self-review, peer feedback and editing tools one can craft a polished essay that leaves a lasting impression on readers.

What is a Descriptive Essay?

Descriptive essays are more than just a simple narration or description of a subject. They aim to provide a detailed and vivid depiction of a subject using concrete details and figurative language, engaging the reader’s senses. Whether it’s describing a family member, a favorite food, or a memorable experience, the goal is to paint a picture so vivid that the reader feels as if they’re experiencing it firsthand. A good descriptive essay achieves this by striking the perfect balance between narration and sensory details.

To achieve this, writers must use vivid language and create a strong sense of imagery. They are.

Purpose of a Descriptive Essay

The primary objective of a descriptive essay is to create a clear and detailed picture of a subject, allowing the reader to visualize and understand it. It’s about immersing the reader into the world the writer has crafted, much like an argumentative essay, which seeks to convince readers of a particular viewpoint.

A descriptive essay, however, focuses on creating a sensory experience, engaging the reader on a deeper level with the subject, rather than just communicating facts.

Characteristics of Descriptive Writing

Descriptive writing possesses certain key characteristics, which include organization, detail, sensory language, factual information, and the abstention of opinions. Organization is crucial as it helps the reader comprehend the essay and follow the writer’s line of reasoning.

Detail and sensory language bring the subject to life, creating a vivid image in the reader’s mind, while factual information and the absence of opinions ensure an accurate and unbiased portrayal of the subject.

Choosing Descriptive Essay Topics

The beauty of descriptive essays lies in the versatility of their subjects. From people and characters to places, objects, emotions, and experiences, there’s a whole world of topics waiting to be explored. When selecting a topic, consider aspects of your own experience, things that interest you, or subjects that hold personal significance.

The key is to choose a subject that you can describe in detail, allowing your reader to immerse themselves in the vivid world you create.

People and Characters

Descriptive essays about people and characters allow you to dive deep into the intricacies of their personalities, traits, and relationships. You can focus on family members, friends, teachers, or even fictional characters. When writing a personal essay about a person, consider aspects such as their physical appearance, personality, behavior, habits, and accomplishments.

This provides a comprehensive and engaging portrayal of the entire essay that will captivate your reader.

Places and Settings

Places and settings provide a rich canvas for descriptive essays. They can be real or fictional locations, such as hometowns, schools, or imaginary worlds. When describing a place, focus on its physical characteristics, cultural significance, or historical importance. This will create a multi-dimensional image that transports your reader to the location and enables them to experience it as if they were there themselves.

By focusing on the details of the place, you can create a vivid and engaging description.

Objects and Items

Descriptive essays about objects and items give you the opportunity to examine everyday items or objects with personal significance in a new light. From a cherished family heirloom to a simple household item, the possibilities are endless.

To create a vivid description, focus on sensory details such as texture, color, smell, taste, and sound. By exploring these aspects, you’ll breathe life into the object and make it come alive for your reader.

Emotions and Experiences

Emotions and experiences are a goldmine for descriptive essays. By delving into your own feelings and personal reflections, you can create an intimate and powerful portrayal of an emotion or experience. Consider topics such as love, fear, happiness, or sadness, as well as personal experiences, memories, and favorite things.

Through sensory details and reflection, you’ll create a palpable connection with your reader, allowing them to share in your emotional journey.

Crafting a Descriptive Essay Outline

An outline is an indispensable tool in crafting a descriptive essay. It helps organize your thoughts, create a smooth flow, and ensure that your essay is structured coherently. A typical descriptive essay outline consists of an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

By following this structure, you’ll ensure that your essay flows seamlessly from one section to the next, making it easy for your reader to follow along and understand your message.

Introduction

A strong descriptive essay introduction, also known as an introductory paragraph, is essential for capturing your reader’s attention and setting the stage for your descriptive essay. It should be brief, engaging, and introduce the subject you’ll be describing. The introduction should also include a well-crafted thesis statement, which provides a succinct overview of the main arguments of your essay.

By starting with a compelling introduction, you’ll entice your reader to continue reading and immerse themselves in the world you’ve created.

Body Paragraphs

The body paragraphs of your descriptive essay should focus on specific aspects of your subject, using vivid language and sensory details to create a rich and immersive experience for your reader. Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that encapsulates the main idea of the paragraph and connects it to the overall thesis statement. By following the descriptive essay format, you can ensure a well-structured and engaging piece of writing, such as a five paragraph essay.

Remember to use transition words to guide your reader through your essay and maintain a logical flow. These words can help you to move from one idea to the next, and to connect the ideas.

In the conclusion of your descriptive essay, it’s important to restate your thesis statement and provide a brief reminder of the topics you’ve covered. This helps to reinforce your main points and bring your essay full circle.

Consider leaving your reader with something to ponder or a memorable phrase that encapsulates the essence of your essay. A strong conclusion will leave a lasting impression on your reader, ensuring that your descriptive essay is not soon forgotten.

Mastering Descriptive Language

The key to a captivating descriptive essay lies in the language you use. Mastering descriptive language involves harnessing the power of figurative language, sensory details, and strong word choices to create a memorable and vivid description. By employing these techniques, you’ll not only paint a vivid picture for your reader, but also evoke their emotions and engage their senses, creating a truly immersive experience.

Using figurative language, such as metaphors and similes, can help you to create a vivid visual.

Figurative Language

Figurative language, such as metaphors and similes, can add depth and creativity to your descriptive essay. These literary devices help convey unique perspectives and create memorable effects. For example, instead of simply describing a park as green and lush, you could use a metaphor to compare it to a paradise or a simile to liken it to an oasis.

By using figurative language, you’ll breathe new life into your descriptions and leave a lasting impression on your reader.

Sensory Details

Sensory details are the secret ingredient that makes your descriptive essay come alive. By appealing to your reader’s senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell, you’ll create a vivid and immersive experience that goes beyond mere description. For example, instead of simply saying that a room is warm, you could describe the gentle caress of the sunlight on your skin, the soft hum of the air conditioner, and the faint scent of cinnamon in the air.

By incorporating sensory details, you’ll transport your reader into the world you’ve created.

Word Choice

The words you choose can make or break your descriptive essay. Precise and original words can help you avoid clichés and create a strong impression on your reader. Be mindful of your word choice, and consider using a thesaurus to find alternative words that better capture the essence of your subject.

By selecting the right words, you’ll not only create a vivid image in your reader’s mind, but also convey your unique perspective on the subject.

Reviewing and Revising Your Descriptive Essay

The final step in crafting a captivating descriptive essay is to review and revise your work. This process involves self-review, peer feedback, and the use of editing tools to ensure that your essay is polished and error-free.

By carefully reviewing your work and incorporating feedback, you’ll ensure that your descriptive essay is the best it can be, leaving your reader with a memorable and vivid experience.

Self-Review

Self-review is an essential part of the revision process. Start by taking a break from your essay to gain a fresh perspective. Then read your essay aloud, listening for awkward phrasing or unclear sections.

Ask yourself questions to ensure clarity and coherence, such as “Does the essay make sense?” and “Are there any areas that require additional clarification?” By critically evaluating your work, you’ll be able to identify areas for improvement and make the necessary changes.

Peer Feedback

Peer feedback is another valuable resource in the revision process. Sharing your essay with classmates, friends, or family members can provide fresh insights and suggestions for improvement. Be open to constructive criticism and consider the feedback you receive before making any revisions.

Remember, the goal is to create the best possible version of your descriptive essay, and sometimes an outside perspective can help you see areas for improvement that you might have missed.

Editing Tools

Finally, consider using editing tools to help polish your descriptive essay. Programs like Grammarly can help you identify and correct grammatical errors and improve the overall quality of your writing.

By using editing tools, you can ensure that your essay is not only engaging and vivid, but also polished and professional.

Descriptive Essay Examples and Analysis

Analyzing descriptive essay examples can provide valuable insights into effective writing techniques and strategies. By examining the work of others, you’ll gain a better understanding of how to craft your own descriptive essay and learn new approaches that can help you bring your subject to life.

In this section, we’ll look at two different examples of descriptive essays and discuss the techniques used to create vivid and memorable descriptions.

Consider this descriptive essay example, which showcases classic approaches to descriptive writing: “The small, sunlit room was filled with the scent of freshly brewed coffee and the sound of soft jazz playing in the background. Every surface was covered in a layer of paint splatters, a testament to the artist’s dedication and passion.

The large canvas in the center of the room captured the essence of a summer day, with vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes. This example employs vivid sensory details and strong word choices to create an engaging and memorable description that transports the reader into the world of the artist.

In this second example, the writer takes a different approach to descriptive writing: “The city was a maze of towering skyscrapers, their reflections shimmering in the glassy surface of the river below. The buzz of traffic echoed through the canyon-like streets, while the aroma of street food vendors wafted through the air.

It was a place where dreams and realities collided, each vying for dominance in the ever-changing landscape.” Here, the writer uses figurative language and a more poetic style to convey the atmosphere and energy of the city, creating a vivid and captivating description that leaves a lasting impression on the reader.

How to Describe your Teacher in English

write a descriptive essay on your best teacher

What to say about your teacher?

You see this person every day, but how to talk about them? What do you know about your teacher that you can talk about for more than one minute?

Talking about your teacher is a common question in the IELTS speaking test. It could come up in part one, two or three, so you need to be prepared when talking about your teacher.

Want to know what to say? And how to say it all?

Dive right into my guide here and I will show you how to do it. Ready? Let’s begin.

Table of Contents

You need to start with some basic general ideas about your teacher. Think about the following questions:

What is his or her name?

Is your teacher a man or a woman?

What subject do they teach?

Do the students like this teacher?

This can serve as a great introduction of who your teacher is and what subject he or she teaches.

Let’s look at some examples…

My teacher is called Mr Jones. But we sometimes call him Peter in class. He teaches us physics. The students like him because he does lots of experiments in class, which makes it more interesting.
Miss Hanes is my English teacher. She is great and all my class love her very much. When she talks about novels or plays, we have to read in class she always sounds very passionate about the stories and the writers.

It is very simple. You start off with an easy introduction, like one of the examples above.

Why don’t you try?

Take a look at the questions and write out a few sentences as an

introduction for your teacher.

General Descriptions of your Teacher

You should describe your teacher’s physical appearance.

But this is not really so important for your talk. You only need to describe how tall your teacher is and then some general descriptions about the teacher’s face, hair, and other physical attributes.

I will show you some examples below:

Mr Clarke is our English teacher. He is quite tall and slim, and he has blonde hair. He wears the same jacket to class every day. But he doesn’t wear very formal clothes like the other teachers. He wears jeans and sports shoes.
Miss Evans is our chemistry teacher. She is a bit overweight and has dark brown hair which she ties up in class. She wears glasses for reading, which she wears on a chain around her neck. Because she is our chemistry teacher, she always wears a white lab coat.
Mr Davis is our maths teacher. He is kind of serious and he always wears a dark suit in class. He has a beard, which makes him look even more serious.
Mr James is our political affairs and history teacher. He is overweight and a little short. He often wears a white shirt and a tie with striped on it. He is losing his hair, and most of it is going grey now. He frowns a lot when we look at some world events in class.

That is all you have to say when describing your teacher’s physical appearance.

The emphasis should really be on the subject your teacher teaches and how he teaches you all in class.

If you want to practice how to talk about someone’s physical appearance, please check out my article here — How to Describe Someone’s Physical Appearance in English.

write a descriptive essay on your best teacher

What Subject Does the Teacher Teach?

The main topic of this talk should be about the subject your teacher teaches in class and whether or not he or she is a good teacher.

You need to show examples of how the teacher teaches — their style and their personality in the classroom. You can do this by sharing some anecdotes in your talk.

Let’s say, for example, that you are talking about your English Literature teacher.

How does this teacher teach novels, plays and poetry in the class?

What style does he teach in?

What kind of personality does the teacher have? And is this useful in the class — or not?

Is the teacher interested in what he or she is teaching? Do they have a passion for the subject? Or are they boring?

These are some questions you can think about to help you talk about this part.

Let me show you some examples:

Miss James teaches us English Literature. We all love her class because even though some of the poems and plays are kind of boring, she really knows how to make it interesting for us. For example, one semester we were studying Romeo and Juliet. We read most of the play, but because it’s Shakespeare, it’s really hard to understand. So she let us watch the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio. It really helped us to get into the play.
Mr Jackson is our chemistry teacher. Who always seems a bit crazy, like a mad professor or something like that. When we do experiments in class, he always acts surprised like he has never seen it before. It makes the class much more fun for us rather than going over boring equations.
Miss Evans teaches social science. She makes the class very interesting by bringing in real-world examples for us to look at. She also has a great sense of humour and makes us laugh all the time. Her classes are never dull.

What about your teacher? What subject do they teach and how do they teach this subject in class?

Is this teacher interesting or boring? And what do they other students think of them?

Stories about your Teacher

Of course, the best way to describe your teacher is to tell a short story or anecdote about them. This can really help you in the IELTS test.

I have said this many times before in other articles, but it really is a superb way to introduce any person. If you want to take a look at my articles on how to use storytelling, you can find them here.

How to Tell a Story

Using Stories to Describe People & Things in the IELTS Test

If you can remember a little story about your teacher, just tell that in the test. This will help you describe many things about your teacher.

Here are some examples:

One time we had to read Lord of The Flies in class with our English teacher, Mr Angus. Before we read the passage from the book, Mr Angus put us all in the mood for the story. He made us close our eyes and try to imagine what it would be like stuck on a desert island and trying to survive. He created a scene and told us to think about it for a few seconds. Then when we read from the book, we all felt as if we were really on the desert island. With no water or food and no adults around to help us. He is really good at making us get into the story. He doesn’t just make us read the book and expect us to fully understand it. He is like a guide, leading us through it.
Mr Reid is our physics teacher. He arranged a field trip to the science museum in London and all our class went there for the day. It was a really great day out. One, we didn’t have to stay in class — but the main reason was that it was so much fun. Mr Reid let us go round the whole museum by ourselves and just explore all the exhibits inside. At the end of the day, we were all exhausted and fell asleep on the bus back to school. But then the next time we had class with Mr Reid, he asked us what we had found in the science museum. He made us think of all the things we had discovered and how it related to what we had done in class. We had to think long and hard to remember all the different exhibits in the museum.

Can you think of any interesting stories about your teacher?

If you can, take some time to write it down and then try to recite it out loud.

Stories are very useful in the IELTS test.

When talking about your teacher in the IELTS test, you should place more importance on what subject the teacher teaches and how he teaches you in class.

You can do this by taking a look at the examples I wrote above.

Another very useful thing to do is to think of stories about your teacher. The examiner loves to hear stories in the IELTS test.

If you can do this, you are more likely to get a higher score.

Good luck and let me know in the comments below!

Another good topic for an ESL/EFL class! I like the fact that you put the emphasis on what the teacher teaches rather than only describing the teacher. But what I liked the best was the story or anecdote about something that happened in the class. That makes the description more memorable..

Descriptive Essay: My Favorite Teacher

My favorite teacher is my history teacher, and he is by far the best teacher that I have ever had. He has the ability to make a subject that many students find incredibly boring come to life through his enthusiasm and passion for history, and his love of being a teacher. Going to his lessons is something we look forward to, not dread, like we do with most other lessons.

It’s ever so funny to watch him get excited about something, which happens in every lesson. It’s easy to know that he’s getting excited because he begins bouncing up and down slightly in a way that no other sixty-something year old would ever managed without looking completely ridiculous. He has this dark (with more and more grey streaks these days), springy hair that lines the edge of his growing bald patch, and the hair bounces up and down with him like thousands of tiny little springs. Then, he takes on his whole new persona, often going into role and becoming the character or figure he is talking about, doing the voices, the actions, and parading up and down the room gesticulating wildly, but all the while there’s a gentle ‘bounce, bounce, bounce’, as though the springs are not just on his head but on the soles of his shoes too.A teacher that doesn’t take himself too seriously always will be a big hit with teenagers, although he’s not afraid to impose his authority if he has to. I’ve only ever heard him properly shout once (although thankfully it wasn’t it me), but it isn’t an experience that I would like to repeat.

We Will Write a Custom Case Study Specifically For You For Only $13.90/page!

When he lost it, the room suddenly became more silent than I’d ever known it to be before. We all sat slightly paralyzed, not even anting to breathe too loudly, because hearing such a jovial and jolly little man lose his temper was a huge shock. It certainly had the right kind of impact though, because he’s never needed to shout since. It is actually this teacher that I have to thank for my love of history. In his lessons, history does not mean copying out of textbooks and writing pages and pages of notes. History is alive; history is something tangible, that you can see, hear and feel, and we can live it through dressing up and acting out scenes or taking trips to important places of historical interest.

And although he’s getting on in years and may not be teaching for much longer, he will have an important place in history for many of his students, because there has never been a teacher able to bring a subject to life in quite the same way he does.

The Teacher I Like Most

5 Best Essays on “The Teacher I Like Most”

Essay No. 01

A teacher is a nation-builder. He is held in high respect by all. But every stone is not a gem. There are teachers and all are not alike, Nor equally gifted. There are only a few shining gems among them, that may be called the nation-builders in the real sense of the word.

There are a number of teachers in my school who have taught me, but Mr. R.P. Mittal has impressed me most with his learning and ability. I like him the most. He has an impressive personality.

He is a healthy young man with a graceful bearing. He teaches us Eng. Mr. Mittal is M.A. in Eng. He is a trained and qualified teacher and has a remarkable mastery of his subject. He believes in the maxim of simple living and high thinking. He is simple in dress and habits. Though a little serious and stern in his appearance, he is tolerant and sympathetic at heart. He knows the minds of children. He never loses his temper, nor gets excited. His behavior with the students is father-like. He seldom uses a cane for the acts on the rule uses the rod and spoils the child.

Mr. Mittal believes in obedience and discipline on the part of the students. While at school or outside, he keeps at a respectable distance from the students and does not allow them to take an advantage of his leniency. He acts upon whatever he says or asks others to do. He is himself regular and punctual, and by his solitary example, he has improved the tone of his classes. During his of discipline, obedience, regularity, and punctuality. According to Mr. Mittal, these are the four pillars on which erect the building of their careers.

He knows how to teach effectively. He creates interest even in the dull and dry lessons on grammar. Not a single student is found inattentive in his class. It is because he has won the confidence of the students by the qualities of his head and heart. Students, and their parents too, cooperate with him and value his guidance concerning education or vocation.

Mr. Mittal has a sense of humor which other teachers mostly lack. He feels the pulse of the students cleverly while he is teaching. He enjoys a joke with them and sometimes he correlates a witty story with the lesson of the delay.

I shall always remember him with gratitude. I can say with full confidence that he has a hand in preparing us for the struggle of life.

The Person I Admire the Most

Movies stars and singers, who make a lot of money and are famous, are teenagers’ admiration. However, they don’t even know the person or their personality. To me admiration is a kind of respect. My mother is the only person who had entered my life and made my look at things differently.

The first reason that I admire my mother is she teaches me about the Experience is what you learn as you go  through your life. As a child , we always learned that people are really nice and generous. That is not true. As you step into the real world, you will see the real face of the people and all different schemes , plan to fulfill them.

The mother takes care of her children first before she can take care of her. My mother always takes care of me first before she can take care of herself. For example , after a long day of work, even if she is really tired that she can just go home and relax. Instead, she makes dinner for the family and takes out a little time to look at my homework and listen to me complain about the school, the teacher. And then she gets my bag pack ready for the next day before she can even go to take a shower. Nobody had ever done this for me and there will be no one who would do the same thing like my mother.

In conclusion, I admire my mother because she teaches me about life experiences. My mother works so hard for our family and for my best. When I grow up I will take care of her as the way she did to me right now.

A teacher is the one who is known as the base of our future or we can say teacher is the one who shows or teaches us the path of life. Mr. Lal is my favourite teacher. He is a brilliant tutor. He has the wonderful ability of being able to motivate students in a down-to-earth way. He is a very understanding teacher. He treats students like friends, understands them and solves their problems in the best possible and easiest way. He never shouts. He always remains calm. He is very helpful. A student can ask any question any time.

Queries never irritate him, and he answers them very politely. I owe him lot of gratitude for finding my writing and grammar skills, of which I always felt I never had the ability to do, and improve my communication skills.

When I was in class tenth, I was very weak in English. After giving my exams, I decided to improve my English. I met Mr. Lal. I was very nervous. He gave me the confidence to realize that I could make something out of myself He detected my strengths and weaknesses and suggested me ways to improve and work further on my writing, grammar and communication skill.

The greatest thing I learned from him is that I could do it; a voice to believe in myself.

He has no greed. He always gives his full time to the students. When I first arrived to commence on course, I was too young and lacked confidence and motivation. Fortunately, Mr. Lal was there and he did a wonderful job: he is intelligent, respectful, honest and very friendly indeed.

He always smiles and never looses his temper. He is respected by all of us. He is polite and soft spoken. He is always regular and punctual.

He teaches us English and is the master of the subject. He makes every student understand his lesson well. One can never forget, whatever he teaches. He has made English grammar very easy for us.

He keeps strict discipline in the class. He never beats anyone, still boys always follow his orders. He never allows anybody to take liberty with him.

He is a good sportsman. He is a very good cricket player. He encourages students to take part in games.

He is respected by all teachers, students and other staff of the School. Principal considers him, his right hand and has full faith in him. He will always remain a source of inspiration for me.

Essay No. 05

I read in the ninth class. There are six teachers who teach my class. All of them are hard-working, experienced and efficient. They are respected by all of us. But the teacher I like most is Mr. Roy. He teaches us English.

He is a young man of thirty-five. He comes of a noble family. He is good-looking, healthy and strong. He is M.A. (English) B.Ed. He is really master of subject.

He is conversant with new methods and approach of teaching the English language. His manner of teaching is excellent. All of us follow him. He also reaches Board classes. His result is excellent. Many students of his class secure distinction marks and above. He never comes late. He checks homework of every student minutely. He encourages his students to read books on literature to enrich their vocabulary.

In his opinion reading of newspapers and magazines is a must for every student. This develops power of comprehension (understanding). He motivates students to take part in debates, essay competitions, quiz and dramas to develop their all-round character and personality.

He is my favourite teacher. He is liked and respected by everyone in our school. He is virtuous. He has all the qualities of an ideal teacher. He is kind and sympathetic too. He is a gem.
