Movie Review : Student Of The Year
Student Of The Year Raedita Tandan, April 20, 2013
- Student Of The Year Movie Review
Director: Karan Johar Cast: Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Rishi Kapoor, Ronit Roy, Ram Kapoor Think of a quintessential Karan Johar film and opulence, grandeur, style and candy floss emotions come to mind. Not to forget, the song-and-dance extravaganzas with a lavish sprinkling of stars. And Student Of The Year is just that albeit the stars. But that doesn’t seem to affect the film because Karan manages to engage you from the word go with the right dose of humour, emotions and drama. Student Of The Year (SOTY) traces the life of Abhimanyu Singh (Sidharth Malhotra), a small town boy with a big ambition, Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan) – a rich kid, who is emotionally messed up because of a complex relationship with his father (Ram Kapoor) and Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt), the girl every boy is in love with and every girl aspires to be in high school – popular, rich and gorgeous. Rohan and Shanaya are childhood sweethearts in a tricky relationship (Rohan has quite the roving eye) and among the popular students of St. Teresa’s High School or St. T’s as it is fondly called. But things seem to go awry for all when Abhimanyu enters and ego clashes between the two boys play havoc. But after a series of verbal spats followed by a few practical jokes and some heartwarming moments, the two become thick as thieves. Amidst all this, the much coveted Student Of The Year competition, founded by gay Dean Yogendra Vashisth (Rishi Kapoor, who’s track with coach Ronit Roy is amongst the highlights of the film), keeps everyone busy. But things get messy when Abhimanyu falls for Shanaya and she reciprocates to his feelings. Healthy competition turns into revenge as Rohan and Abhimanyu grapple with their emotions. Even though SOTY is a high-school drama, at no point in the film does Karan offend the audiences intelligence. Every scene in the film engrosses you. While he takes familiar material, it’s his modern take that makes SOTY a special film. Among the performances, Sidharth, Varun and Alia do their best not to seem like newcomers and they emerge triumphant. Sidharth’s restraint is impressive. Varun is charming; his brilliant dancing skills deserve a special mention. And Alia definitely has what it takes to be a star. The three make confident debuts. Vishal-Shekhar’s foot-tapping compositions keep you in your seats. You’re not going to want to buy popcorn during these songs! Kajol’s cameo in Disco Deewane is sure to get the whistles. The cinematography and styling make this one helluva good-looking film. A few scenes deserve special mention – the nail-biting climax of the competition, a silent sequence with just music playing in the background, Rishi Kapoor drooling over John Abraham’s six-pack body and his fantasizing moments with Ronit Roy. Karan deserves brownie points for a brilliant supporting cast. Kayoze Irani (Boman Irani’s son) stands out. Ram Kapoor does a fabulous job as the selfish businessman and bad father. His performance makes you feel sorry for Rohan, who subconsciously craves his dad’s approval through most of the film. All in all, Karan’s SOTY world is surreal and spectacular yet it has moments that will bring you back to reality and warm the cockles of your heart. This is escapism at its best. Oh and girls, there’s enough brawn to keep you drooling!

Student Of The Year Movie Review
Karan Johar is one of the most loved and respected directors in the industry and Student Of The Year – his first film without Shahrukh Khan – is probably his biggest test. With 3 newcomers, Karan returns to what he does best, a candy floss romcom starring Varun Dhawan, Siddarth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt. The film also features Rishi Kapoor and little Anjali (now 24) from Kuch Kuch Hota Jai, Sana Saeed.
Story: Student Of The Year is set in St Teresas High School, one of the most prestigious schools in the country. Most students here are filthy rich, drive a Ferrari and wear designer clothes. One such student is Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan), son of one of India’s richest men (played by Ram Kapoor). Rohan doesn’t get along with his father, who is overtly critical and under-estimates him. He is in love with Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt). She loves him too, but isn’t too comfortable with Rohan’s closeness with school mate Tanya (Sana Saeed).
Enter Abhimanyu Singh (Siddharth Malhotra), who comes from a middle-class background and has ambitions of making it big. Initially he doesn’t get along with Rohan, but after a Football match, the two become good friends. Soon, Abhimanyu falls for Shanaya, who also has feelings towards him. Or does she?
There is also a major school competition for the prized ‘Student Of The Year’ trophy.
Student Of The Year Review
Student Of The Year is a typical Karan Johar film; with slightly over-the-top characters, huge sets, beautiful costumes – infact, every frame in the film is picture-perfect and larger-than-life. Every newcomer gets a grand intro; Varun Dhawan as a rockstar, Alia Bhatt’s reminds you of Poo (Kareena) in K3G and Siddarth Malhotra makes a Hrithik Roshan like entry.
The first half is a lot of fun, and at times, reminds you of classics like Main Hoon Na and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikhander. The film has drama, subtle romance but never gets melodramatic. Karan Johar films are known to make the audience cry, Student Of The Year doesn’t. It’s more of a fun-filled entertainer, than a emotional drama.
It wouldn’t be incorrect to say, this is Karan Johar’s most light-hearted and fun film since his directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He narrates the story through a series of flashbacks, which culminates into a brilliantly written and executed climax.
So any negatives? Not many. The film tends to drag a bit in the second half. Also, the length (2 hours 26 mins) should ideally have been shorter.
Vishal-Shekhar’s music and background score goes well with the film. Disco Dewaane and Ishq Wala Love are my personal favorites. Niranjan Iyengar’s dialogues are well-written. Ayananka’s camerawork is extraordinary.
The performances are good. Varun Dhawan is fantastic and performs like a seasoned actor. He looks good on-screen and emotes well. Alia Bhatt has to be one of the cutest newcomers in the industry. She looks stunning in a bikini too. Acting-wise, she does well, but her character doesn’t really demand on-screen histrionics. Siddharth Malhotra gets a few scenes right, but he has a along way to go as an actor. He doesn’t quite get his expressions right in a few important scenes. Again, it’s only his debut, he will improve. Rishi Kapoor is brilliant as a gay dean. Ronit Roy is effective. Kayoze Irani (Boman Irani’s son) makes a confident debut. Ram Kapoor is fabulous. Sana Saeed looks hot. There are several special appearances in the film – Kajol, Boman Irani, Farah Khan, Vaibhabi Merchant. And no, you wont get to see SRK in SOTY.
Overall, there isn’t a dull moment in Student Of The Year. It has something in it for everyone – romance, action, entertainment, good performances and catchy music. Go for it.

Varun good? Oh come on, his dialogue delivery is miserable. IDK, back then he had flights to catch or what!! So miserable! Accent not good!!! He speaks trophy like trrooophy! Either flat face or into angry-young man zone!!.. Siddarth is awesome!! His role demanded many shaded and I think he delivered in most of them!! Speaks with ease..!! ..Alia Bhatt’s role hasn’t been written properly!!..She’s wasted!!..Dsnt get much substance!!
Movie is good though!! Entertaining!! Gud 1st half, 2nd half not so great!! One time watch!

Student of the Year Reviews
Not only is Student of the Year cinematically stale, but it's also politically dishonest.

Karan deserves brownie points for a brilliant supporting cast.
The trouble with Student Of The Year is that it doesn't even feel as if it is trying for novelty, despite the brand-new talent it showcases.
Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 22, 2019
Student of the Year is a merry jaunt that allows us brief respite from the rigours of daily life to take a fun frolic in Johar's rainbow-hued, Prada world, where the beautiful people reign.
Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 30, 2017
Not every film needs to have meaning, or a larger message, but it does need a story. Student of the Year is all about the clothes, the brawn and the glamour, but not much else.

Student Of The Year Review
Star Cast: Sidharth Malhotra , Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Rishi Kapoor, Sana Saeed, Ram Kapoor, Kajol (guest appearance).
What’s Good: The performances; the direction; the humour.
What’s Bad: The unbelievable portrayal of students; the hamming; the ridiculous explanations in the climax.
Loo break: None.
Watch or Not?: If you’re a fan of Karan Johar’s fare, you’ll definitely enjoy all the dance-drama. Otherwise it’s just like a re-hashed version of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai .
Student Of The Year makes no qualms about being an “escapist” movie. One of the characters introduces the school where all the action takes place – St Teresa – as “…not a normal school. A world in its own.”
This is Karan Johar’s fantasy land on his canvas, so you have the rich douchebag Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan) who (predictably) has daddy issues. With his father (Ram Kapoor) being one of the donors for the school, he has a posse of guys who hang on to his every word. While his rich, hot and spoilt girlfriend Shanaya (Alia Bhatt) hankers for his attention, he still keeps wandering to the other hottie Tanya (Sana Saeed).
When poor-orphan-with-a-scholarship, Abhimanyu (Sidharth Malhotra) joins the school, he threatens Rohan’s fiefdom. But soon the duo warm up to each other and become good friends. Heck, Abhimanyu even helps Rohan win back Shanaya after she throws a hissy fit, though Abhimanyu loves her!
Then dean Yogendra (Rishi Kapoor) announces the Student Of The Year competition and all hell breaks loose. Friendships are threatened, fistfights follow and there is lots of love lost.
Watch the movie to find out who wins.
Student Of The Year Review: Script Analysis
The story for the movie is very rudimentary: two guys in love with the same girl and the same trophy (note: aforementioned girl and trophy aren’t the same.) Even if you make many exceptions for the story – with all the repeated stereotypes – nothing disappoints you like the pathetic explanations in the end. The outburst at the climax deserved to be much stronger. Maybe St T’s (as we’re supposed to call this institution) is based in some wonderland where everyone comes to school in designer clothes (including Abhimanyu, whom we are led to believe belongs to the lower economic ‘Bata’ club) and Mercedes Benzs to school, but this la-la-land also doesn’t require a minimum age for a driving license or for drinking alcohol in clubs/discos. Then there are the parts which are just for the sake of making you go “Aww…” like Abhimanyu’s grandmother’s illness. But the humour quotient is bang on.
Rensil Dsilva’s screenplay is alright but Niranjan Iyengar’s dialogues are pretty good.
Student Of The Year Review: Star Performances
With three big debutantes in the movie, it is a bit difficult to pick and choose, but my vote goes for Sidharth Malhotra as Abhimanyu. He’s the sweet charming boy who steals your heart with his sighs. Varun Dhawan does very well as the spoilt brat but there are a few places where he needs to buck up. Alia Bhatt ends up with a very dumb-blonde role who has to do standard ramp poses for the camera but she performs ably. Undoubtedly, Varun is the best dancer among all three.
Rishi Kapoor is perfect as the closet-gay dean. Sana Saeed only gets to pout and flaunt her body as Tanya. Ram Kapoor is very good as the latent villain. Kajol’s guest appearance is a pleasant surprise (though I would have loved it if Shah Rukh Khan had a special act as a guest teacher or something).
Student Of The Year Review: Direction, Music & Technical Aspects
Karan Johar’s direction is very good but flounders with the script. Cinematography by Ayananka Bose is sleek. Deepa Bhatia’s editing is very good. The lyrics are pretty lazy; Ishq Wala Love gives you an idea that there’s not much effort into it. Vishal-Shekhar’s music is very youthful, and sometimes nuanced.
Student Of The Year Review: The Last Word
Student Of The Year has some really earnest performances and entertaining comedy scenes. Other than that it’s a staple Karan Johar affair: ridiculous in parts and dramatic in others.

Student of the Year Film Still - H 2012
EMERYVILLE, Calif. — Homoerotic, yet — like one of its frustrated characters — too timid to just come out and own its fabulousness, Student of the Year is a lie from beginning to end.
Filmmaker Karan Johar is known for his turgid love stories and huge, crowd-pleasing dance numbers. His formula up till now, though not taken very seriously by critics, has been hugely successful with audiences; his last four films have starred Bollywood’s top megastar, Shah Rukh Khan , and though his last film with the star, My Name Is Khan (2010), explored the serious issue of racial discrimination, Johar is still largely known as a frothy filmmaker.
Related Stories
Bafta confirms date for 2025 awards, netflix adds cesc gay-directed drama '53 domingos' to spanish film slate.
Released Oct. 19, Student of the Year capitalized on Johar’s marquee value to overcome shaky performances, derivative, sub-par music and blatant emotional fakery to woo a respectable audience.
With this film, Johar has taken the unusual step of casting all unknowns in the three major roles in what is ultimately a coming-of-age story.
Rohan ( Varun Dhawan ) and Abhimanyu ( Siddharth Malhotra ), students at St. Teresa’s College in the hills of Dehra Dun, battle it out for the love of Shanaya ( Alia Bhatt ) and success, and their rivalry reaches a climax at a grueling “Student of the Year” competition in which they not only have to ace a difficult academic test but also compete in a triathlon.
Dhawan and Bhatt are related to filmmakers known for pleasing the masses and infuriating critics (Varun is the son of comedy king David Dhawan , while Alia is the daughter of Jism 2 producer Mahesh Bhatt ). Siddharth Malhotra is a former assistant director to Johar.
Nepotism, a practice set in stone in Hindi cinema, isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Some of the best talent in Hindi cinema is represented by the sons and daughters (and increasingly, nieces, nephews and grandchildren) of industry stalwarts, with celebrities such as Hrithik Roshan , Salman Khan , Sonakshi Sinha , Ajay Devgn , Kajol , Saif Ali Khan , Ranbir Kapoor , Imran Khan , Shahid Kapoor , Vivek Oberoi , Kajol , Karisma Kapoor and Aamir Khan genuinely deserving of their fame and success.
But although Student of the Year ’s production values and story are solid, the film’s lead performances are uneven.
Malhotra has a lithe sex appeal and Dhawan shows promise as a dancer. But Bhatt is a washout. Not only is she inelegant in the dance numbers, but her expressions are limited; and the digital retouching of her face throughout the film is a distraction. In fact, her entire character — ostensibly the reason for the boys’ love triangle — is really superfluous, since the boys will work out their battle on the sports field anyway.
Which leads to the real problem with this film: Johar coyly skates around the topic, but this bi-curious film doesn’t have the pride to just come out.
The women in the film are either catty, ruthless or vacuous. The men hug and ask each other, “You aren’t gay, are you?” “You aren’t going to kiss me, are you?”
There are innumerable, loving close-up shots of so much male eye-candy here that it borders on parody: rippling abs, shaved chests and armpits; men hoisting their taut, wet bodies out of swimming pools or working out in a gym in a slow-motion montage.
One scene, shot on location in Koh Samui, Thailand, shows Malhotra and Bhatt emerging from the ocean in ultra-slow motion, Johar’s camera capturing every drop of seawater as it courses slowly down their smooth, brown skin: queer Bollywood’s version of a Bond Girl.
Rishi Kapoor is a talented actor of great range, but here he embarrasses himself in the role of college headmaster Vashisht, overplaying a simpering “unmarried” man with a penchant for wearing pink and purple polka-dotted neckties and rhinestone lapel pins. Vashist’s unrequited crush for a buff (but married) 40-something college coach ( Ronit Roy ) is a subplot with a sad ending: Vashisht dies alone.
Regarding homosexuality onscreen, this of all times is the most promising era for queer themes in Indian cinema. The government in 2009 decriminalized homosexuality for the first time; HIV/AIDS issues are finally being discussed onscreen; and for the past two years the Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival has grown in prestige and reach.
But mainstream Bollywood is still in the dark ages when it comes to showing mature, loving same-sex relationships. Not only is Student of the Year cinematically stale, but it’s also politically dishonest.

Student Of The Year: Movie Review
Dharma Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment's combined production Student of the Year ( SOTY ) releases today. The film marks the entries of three newcomers Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra into the glamourous world of Bollywood. Karan Johar has given blockbusters in the past and is known for catering to the young audiences, hence the expectations from SOTY are quite high.
Directed by Karan Johar, SOTY is a coming-of-age story that tracks the myriad emotions one goes through while on the journey from youth to adulthood. It is the story of Abhimanyu Singh (Siddharth Malhotra) and Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan), who traverse the path of competition, envy, triumph, failure, manipulation and heartbreak in their mini-universe of St Teresa's High School, Dehradun. Cupid strikes both, when the most happening girl in the campus Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt) enters. Next what happens? How things change in the trio's life?
The movie is set in the picturesque locales of Dehradun that give you a fresh and breezy feel. Student Of The Year is not a typical love story, as predicted by many. The film interestingly and innovatively defines the birth of new ambitions and old loyalties falling by the wayside. Each segment of Student Of The Year competition manages to tear apart both the participants and the spectators to redefine the choices of the three protagonists.
PERFORMANCES
Amongst the trio, Siddharth Malhotra stands out at his best. Sid does a commendable job as Abhimanyu. This Punjabi munda deserves a hats off. Varun Dhawan too is quite convincing in the film. He suits well in his richy-rich, flirtatious character of Rohan. Finally, enters the 'dramebaaz', hotshot babe Alia Bhatt, aka Shanaya, who couldn't think anything better than brands and designer clothes. Alia's character in the film reminds us of K3G 's Poo (Kareena Kapoor).
Student Of The Year has a bright and fresh feel and the promising debutantes add more to the froth in this Karan Johar directorial.
With a youthful setting, the film's soundtrack by duo Vishal-Shekhar, who have doled out seven tracks, gels well with the theme. Songs like 'Disco Deewane', 'Radha', 'Ishq Wala Love' and 'Vele' are already topping the chart.
Student of the Year is a youthful and interesting movie that deserves a thumps up. Three cheers for this.

- Trivia Hanu Raghavpudi, the director of the film, got the idea for the film when he bought a book that had an unopened inland letter. Regarding the same, he told The Hindu, "The letter I found in that book, in 2007, was from a mother to her son. I gathered that their family is from Vijayawada and the son is living in a hostel. She had enquired about his well being and asked when he would be home. It got me thinking, what if the contents of the letter had something crucial that could change the course of events?". Army backdrop was later included in the story as suggested by Rajkumar Kandamudi.
- Goofs As per Ram's letter he knows that Sita is princess Noorjahan. If he addressed the letter to the Princess, it would have reached Sita without any delay.

Student Of The Year Movie Review
- Times Of India
Story: The tracks are ready and the race is on. What’s at stake? Love, friendship and the coveted ‘Student of the Year’ trophy. Movie Review: It’s KJo-Wala Love! Served fresh and piping hot from the Dharma college canteen of romance. And it’s a high (class) school that you’d never want to miss a lecture of, ever. Except that it has its own set of Karan rules. Read the prospectus: 1. Leave your text-books at home but ensure you’re carrying your designer bags and heels. 2. Drive a Ferrari to school, or if you’re poorer, take a bike. 3. Dating, mating, separating and love lessons shall be part of the syllabus. 4. Girls, don your shortest minis, and guys, rip off the shirts. Welcome to St. Teresa’s. Rest assured, it’ll be a well-rounded entertainment experience. movie ST is run by a happy and ‘gay’ Dean - Yogendra Vashisth (Rishi), who drools over John Abraham, and when he sees the much-married hot coach (Ronit Roy) usko ‘coach coach’ hota hai!. The hotshot student of the school is rich brat Rohan Nanda (welcoming Varun Dhawan), who zips around in his hot-wheels, flirts, and dreams of being a Rockstar. His childhood sweetheart, another super rich kid, Shanaya (super filmy intro, Alia! Alia! Alia!), is Ms. Popularity and Drama Queen (don’t miss the red pout) known for her brands and beauty. Enter (grandly) Abhimanyu (Sidharth), a middle-class boy with mega dreams, a chalta-phirta KBC (Mr Know-it-all), and the in-house Milkha Singh. There’s a typical rich-poor division in school, the Richie Rich Tatas v/s the bechara gareeb Batas. But with Abhimanyu’s entry the competition heats up - With both boys showing ample abs & attitude (teeny-weeny trunks, for all you drooling women!), chasing the same gal (Shanaya), and aiming for the same trophy – Student of the Year! Their equations from friends-to-foes changing quicker than their school grades. Their muscles rippling more than their egos; the competition gets tougher and the boys - leaner and meaner. Their loyal friends adding chaos to campus – Eg. Tanya who tries everything in the ‘date- bait-book’ to seduce Rohan (including push-up bras); the Parsi ‘Pseudo’ - the ‘minority report’-card in this bunch; Jeetu - Rohan’s chamcha ; tomboy Shruti - Shanaya’s other half (minus her designer do). This is what we call grandiose debut(s)!!! Karan’s definitely swooshed his cane for this one. The trio has done him proud and has set a high ‘bench-mark’. Varun expresses and emotes with superb confidence and storms the dance floor with swag. Sidharth stands equally tall, has amazing screen presence and is man of few words and many smouldering emotions. Alia wins your heart with her cuteness, effervescence and naivete. Yes, she reminds you of Kareena’s Poo days (with all that oomph), but she comes into her own. The chemistry between the three (even outside the lab) grows on you. Shabhash! SOTY’s supporting cast is brilliant, each have favourite subjects and score high in those areas. But the star who scores a straight A-Plus is undoubtedly Rishi Kapoor – simply superb. The other guy who can take a bow is the director. The film is full of KJo-isms – it’s larger-than-life, colourful, lavish, beautifully shot and directed. With medleys, dance, drama and everything good-looking (from cast to couches, dorms to discos). Vishal-Shekhar have caught the right beat with this high-school musical, and the songs are as fresh as the leads. The story is simple and entertains throughout, though it’s not the first time this marathon of an idea has run past the screen. ‘SOTY’ takes you back to your books and sinks you in true-blue Bollywood syllabus, following the ‘formula’ - Two boys, one girl, one glorious trophy and lots of testosterone. If this one doesn’t pump you up with nostalgia, it’s time for you to go back to school already!

Bollywood star hero Varun Dhawan has now come up with a unique concept film Bhediya. The film is dubbed and released in Telugu as Thodelu by Geetha Arts. Kriti Sanon is the female lead. The film hit the screens today, and let’s see how it is.
Bhaskar (Varun Dhawan), a civil engineer and a road contractor, gets a road project in the interior forest area of Arunachal Pradesh by convincing his boss. He pledges his assets as a guarantee and moves to Arunachal Pradesh along with his cousin JD (Abhishek Banerjee). After reaching there, Bhaskar gets bitten by a wolf which makes him evolve into the creature gradually. He is taken to the veterinary doctor Anika (Kriti Sanon) for treatment. Did Bhaskar become normal? What sort of challenges did he face due to this? Were JD and Anika able to save Bhaskar? Watch the movie to know the answers.
Plus Points:
The film’s concept is unique, making it the first creature-comedy film in India. The makers need special applause for trying something different. An even more good thing is roping in a star hero for this subject which surely boosts the range of the film, and thus the casting was spot on. A good number of thrilling moments and sequences have been conceived with perfection.
Varun Dhawan gave an award-worthy performance by portraying the Bhaskar role to perfection. As a person bitten by a wolf, he gave a fantastic performance and beautifully emoted the pain inside him. There was a lot of physical transformation needed for the role, and one can easily notice the efforts put in by the actor for the film. Kriti Sanon, as Anika, got a nice role and gave a good performance as well.
The story is set nicely from the starting scene without wasting much time. One more biggest advantage of the film is its entertainment quotient. We get a fair amount of comedy portions in both halves that will tickle our bones. The entertainment was carried throughout, and whenever the film went off track, the makers tried to balance it with humor.
Abhishek Banerjee, who did some serious roles in the past, got a chance to show his comedy angle here. As Varun’s cousin, he is superb, and the actor evoked good laughs with his expressions and dialogues. The actor’s capability is nicely used by the makers here in terms of humor. Others also were good in their respective roles.
Minus Points:
The film has its share of flaws too. The movie gets slow in a few places, and there are also a few boring scenes that could have been trimmed down. Especially in the second half, the tempo comes down, and then the momentum picks up only from the pre-climax.
One would expect more depth in the proceedings after a good first half, but that wasn’t maintained after the interval. The key twist of the movie could have been executed in an even better fashion, and it becomes easily predictable due to the addition of a couple of scenes. The makers could have omitted these scenes for the surprise element to strike a chord.
Also, the movie becomes a bit routine toward the end, and hence the overall feel of the film comes down a bit. The violence portions were heavy, and a scene, particularly in the first half, was irritating to see.
Technical Aspects:
The movie’s VFX is nicely done, and the 3D effects were also exquisite. The 3D effects were stunning in a few scenes, enhancing the viewing experience. These scenes were nicely supported by the background score of the Sachin-Jigar duo. The songs were fine. The Telugu dubbing was nicely done.
The cinematography by Jishu was good in capturing the forest and lovely locations of Arunachal Pradesh. The editing is just about okay. The production values are fine. Coming to director Amar Kaushik, he did a decent job with Thodelu (Bhediya). The way he mixed the entertainment angle into this story was nice, and the way he incorporated a social message in the film seemed good. However, he could have been careful regarding the vital twist and the second half, which restricted the film’s overall range.
On the whole, Thodelu is a one-time watchable film backed by a social message. Varun Dhawan’s spectacular performance, comedy scenes, and supporting cast are the main advantages. But, on the flip side, slowness in places, a bit of predictability, and a below-par second hour are its flaws. Regardless, the fun and message portions make the film a decent watch this weekend.
