The Plane Every Pilot Trains On, and the Factory That Makes Them

There is a very good chance that the pilot on your last airline flight once trained on a tiny Cessna 172 Skyhawk. It is a slow, stable, possibly even boring bug smasher. Its look could be considered dated: the Skyhawk is not nearly as eye-catching as its sleek, speedy friends, such as the all-composite Cessna TTX, or the Cirrus SR-20. But the Skyhawk is the most popular aircraft ever built, and universally loved by pilots.

I’m quite fortunate to have learned to fly in a Cessna 172. And for Gear Patrol, I’ve also met the good women and men at Cessna’s manufacturing facility in Independence, Kansas. This is a love story about the Skyhawk, the workhorse of general aviation.

Kansas, Aviation Hub

Kansas is the aviation state, with a long history of innovation. When you fly into Wichita, you can’t help but notice that the Kansas plain is sliced up with airport runways throughout the region, several of them mere miles apart. As you drive away from the airport, you’ll pass buildings lining the road that represent a who’s-who of general aviation: Garmin (trusty navigation equipment), McCauley (makers of propellers) and, finally, Cessna the company that makes the plane that will get students aloft .

Cessna has been producing the Skyhawk since 1955. It’s an incredibly stable plane, with a low center of gravity and high wings, and it’s very forgiving of mistakes. I’ve flown in a 1977 Skyhawk, just one year older than me — other than its age, it was no different than the 2016 model I’ve also flown. In an early advertisement, Cessna called it the “Land-o-Matic,” which is clever marketing but, of course, not entirely true. Even so, in the 172, Cessna built a winner. “You have a proven airframe, stellar safety record, and value proposition,” said Doug May, head of piston aircraft for Cessna, long-time test pilot, and self-described airplane guy.

By the mid-1980s, however, cracks started to form. Product liability lawyers (and some bad pilots, perhaps taking “land-o-matic” too literally) made Cessna and other general aviation manufacturers their target. The company was forced to cease production from 1986 to 1995. In 1995, buoyed by changes in the law, Cessna mobilized like it was preparing for war. The company created a manufacturing plant out of thin air, in a corner of Kansas not previously associated with aircraft making. In partnership with local schools, the company hired and trained workers at a shiny new plant in Independence, Kansas. Each new recruit spent three weeks going from zero experience to working on the factory floor, having learned about sheet metal, how to read blueprints, and how to seal fuel tanks. For reference, eighty hours of training alone are required to learn how to properly seat a rivet.

Cessna has been producing the Skyhawk since 1955. It’s an incredibly stable plane, with a low center of gravity and high-wings, and it’s very forgiving of mistakes.

Cessna developed a very deeply talented team that remains tightly knit to this day. Seemingly equal numbers of men and women have upwards of twenty years of experience and cheery dispositions all around. These are good jobs. One employee, overseeing a team finishing fuel tanks, has helped craft planes for 19 years; her previous gig was finishing  leather gloves . The supervisor of the production line worked souping up cars before joining the company in 1997. Employees seem to love flying, and rightly so: This town of 12,000 has supplied several thousand workers over the years to craft Cessna piston aircraft. Some 500 are employed at the plant today. “These are people who left being a housewife or changing oil and now make airplanes. They’d never put a rivet together in their life,” says Mickey Heatley, a production foreman.

The spirit of aviation permeates Cessna. The company has its very own flying club, with some 400 members. Employees can join their top-notch flight school, get a pilot’s license, and fly one of fourteen brand-new airplanes, including 172s and up. Members of the club pay $70 per hour to rent a plane, which they can take anywhere from Aspen to Miami and everywhere in between. Given that the going rate for similar aircraft is upwards of $200 per hour, that’s a nice perk. (I’d volunteer to sweep the floors, if only to be invited to join.)

A Handcrafted Machine

The Skyhawk is a handcrafted plane. It is assembled from thousands of parts with skill and teamwork.

First, coils of various gauges of aircraft aluminum arrive at the Pawnee plant, where they’re cut to rough forms. The aluminum is coated with a pea-soup colored zinc phosphate, which has anti-corrosion properties. These sheets are surprisingly thin — a Boeing 747 fuselage is about the thickness of a quarter. The Cessna 172 is much thinner, at .32 gauge or around 1/16 of an inch of aluminum. These pieces are then sent to Chihuahua, Mexico, to be formed into plane sections, such as a tail section. (This is NAFTA at work.) Those same parts are then shipped to Independence, Kansas, where deliveries arrive weekly. Highly skilled teams of men and women then meticulously hand assemble the plane piece by piece.

Crafting the planes requires significant manual dexterity. For example, to seal a fuel tank, a worker places beads of sticky sealant through holes in the wing upside down, using a mirror to guide them. And like all mirrors, they display the reverse image. It’s like a dentist holding a mirror when drilling through a cavity, and quite difficult to do. (I tried.)

Empty, the 172 weighs a svelte 2,000 pounds. If you pushed on the tail of the plane while it was on the ground, you could easily strike the tail on the ramp.

The plane sections move from station to station through a series of jigs. Throughout the process, the team meticulously cleans up after themselves with vacuums. Indeed, before assembly, the wings are lifted off the ground and given a good, physical shake as if they were shaking an errant pebble out of a shoe.

Once the structure is assembled into something that looks more like an airplane, a series of cables and pulleys are threaded through the inside of the fuselage from front to back and bottom to top. The control surfaces — the aileron, elevator and rudder — are connected to the yoke and rudder pedals through these cables and pulleys. Pull back on the stick, and it actuates a device that pulls a cable and transmits that request to the elevator through sheer physical force. Rotate the yoke to the left, and a chain transmits the energy into a pulling action on a cable that raises the left aileron and lowers the right aileron. This is literally fly by wire, and not in the electrical sense.

Empty, the 172 weighs a svelte 2,000 pounds. If you pushed on the tail of the plane while it was on the ground, you could easily strike the tail on the ramp. Leave it exposed to a strong wind without wheel chocks or tying it down, you might find your Cessna the next day pressed against a fence trying to escape.

The Engine that Powers It

Cessna itself does not manufacture the engine that powers the Skyhawk. They’re made by Lycoming Engines, a sister company, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The engine itself is a feat of mechanical engineering. At 180 horsepower, the engine is a horizontal four-cylinder piston engine. It shares a superhero secret with a gas-powered lawnmower: the magneto.

Ever wonder why a lawnmower has no battery? Once you start a lawnmower with a hefty tug, the engine turning over and over provides energy to turn a magneto, which then provides the spark to the cylinders. The engine itself provides the spark; no batteries are required. This keeps the engine running forever, or at least until it runs out of gas.

In the case of an airplane, this veritable lawnmower engine on steroids up front will keep the propeller spinning. General aviation aircraft have two magnetos, so that should one magneto fail, there’s a second magneto that will keep firing, and thus keep your engine running in flight. You could lose your radios and your lights, but the engine will keep purring like nothing has happened. Brilliant redundancy, really.

Not Exactly Affordable

Want to buy a Cessna of your own to park at the field? A Skyhawk rolling off the line with the latest in avionics and a “new plane smell” will set you back a mere $369,000. That’s the price of a really nice home in Wichita. It’s a slight jump from the $8,275 price offered in 1957, even adjusted for inflation. Nobody said these planes are inexpensive.

So, who is buying the 150, or so 172s that Cessna sold last year? Flight schools. Cessna’s secret sauce and brand loyalty are developed through the Cessna Pilot Centers around the U.S. (and the world). You, too, can find such a flight school near you. There are more than 150 Cessna Flight Schools around the U.S. While you can certainly learn to fly with a different aircraft, such as a Cirrus or Piper, or at schools that are not affiliated with Cessna, you benefit from 60 years of experience, a familiar platform, and a meticulously made aircraft.

The next time you’re on a commercial plane, ask the captain or first officer how he or she learned to fly. Chances are, it was a plane from Kansas. Now you know how it was put together, and the good people down there who do it.

I worry that the town where my ten-year-old daughter, Margot, was born is becoming unrecognizable to her. So I decided a tour of the Hatch Show Print letterpress was in order.

"What's a letterpress?" Margot asked.

"They make music posters," I said. She got excited.

"Think they have any of Taylor Swift?" she asked.

"Maybe," I said, explaining that they've been in business since 1879, and have worked with just about every musician you can think of—from Elvis Presley to Elvis Costello.

"Who's Elvis Costello?" Margot asked.

The production process hasn't changed much in over a century. Some of the letter blocks—exactly 0.918 inches high, a standard established in 1886 by the United States Type Founders' Association—are the original end-cut maple versions. This isn't Photoshop. There is no erasing. If even the smallest amount of grit builds up beneath an individual block, it must be sanded by hand so that it prints evenly. The rollers have to be reinked every four prints—each one slightly more faded than the last. These subtle inconsistencies are what make Hatch Show Print posters so special: No two look exactly alike.

The craftsmanship wowed my daughter—just like it had wowed me on my first visit, not long after I moved to Nashville two decades ago. But her favorite part was the end, when we got to browse through an inventory of photo plates and posters dating back to the shop's very first print run. I marveled at the photo plate for Led Zeppelin's first Nashville appearance in 1970. Then I glanced over and spotted Margot. She had the very same grin on her face. She was looking at a poster from Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" tour. —Adam Ross

2. The U.S. Mint

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Also Denver, Colorado): 45 minutes; free

From a 40-foot observation deck you'll see coins—tens of millions each day—sliced from metal coils that weigh 6,000 pounds and stretch five football fields. Inspectors use magnifying glasses to check the quality. Just one flaw in one coin and the entire batch is destroyed and recycled.

3. John Deere

Waterloo, Iowa (Also East Moline, Illinois, and Ankeny, Iowa): 90 minutes; free

Tours take place on a tram pulled by—what else?—a John Deere tractor. Huge robotic arms spray each vehicle in signature green and yellow. But the logo is still applied by hand.

4. Airstream

Jackson Center, Ohio: One to two hours; free

Each of the iconic travel trailers has thousands of rivets holding together huge sheets of aircraft-grade aluminum. And every one of those rivets is drilled in by hand. Once finished, the campers go into the rain-test booth, where they're pounded by hurricane-strength rain for 20-minute cycles.

5. Bourbon Barrel Foods

Louisville, Kentucky: 25 minutes; free

The nation's only soy sauce microbrewer—yes, soy sauce microbrewer—uses repurposed bourbon barrels and limestone-filtered Kentucky spring water to create a uniquely smoky-sweet condiment. FDA restrictions keep you from the factory floor, but you can still watch through glass as workers cook soybeans, roast grain, and press mash with six tons of force.

6. Woolrich

Woolrich, Pennsylvania: One hour; free

Woolrich has been churning out fabric since 1830, including blankets for Civil War soldiers. And for the factory's 60-odd employees, working with raw wool—a single blanket takes roughly four pounds—is its own kind of battle. A variety of heirloom machines dye, comb, spin, wind, warp, weave, wash, and roll the material before it can be turned into something you'd cozy up with on the couch.

7. Coors Brewing Company

Golden, Colorado: 30 minutes; free

What kind of dad takes his five-year-old son on a brewery tour? A cool one, I thought, boarding the shuttle bus to the Coors plant in Golden, Colorado—the largest single-site brewery in the world, capable of turning out 13 million barrels of beer annually. To me, it was just another father–son outing—a chance to see something new and learn something interesting. Like the zoo, but with the freshest free beer imaginable. Little did I suspect my boy would end up scarred for life.

In and of itself, the self-guided tour is utterly wholesome, an experience as pure as the vaunted Rocky Mountain spring water that prompted Adolph Coors to set up shop in Golden back in 1873. Exhibits explain ingredients, malting, mashing, etc., while affording a look at impressive mechanized assembly lines that channel endless rivers of freshly filled cans and packed cardboard cases in perfect perpetual motion. It wasn't easy to detach my son's nose from the observation window, but over the clack of the machinery, Daddy discerned the siren song of the samples that await responsible drinkers of legal age at the end of the tour.

As I sipped a cold glass of Coors and my son a soda, we surveyed our surroundings: an ersatz pub, decorated with old advertisements—including one featuring E.T. (left), that lovable extraterrestrial, imploring imbibers to "phone home" for a ride should they overindulge. This seemingly harmless poster, unfortunately, made by far the largest impression of the day on my son. What is that thing? Is it coming to get me? What part of me do you think it would eat first? Years later, the poor lad is still uncommonly concerned with the perceived dangers posed by aliens, even smiling ones in bartenders' aprons.

Then again, if that keeps him out of the taverns for a few extra years, maybe it's not all bad. —Kendall Hamilton

8. Golden Flake

Birmingham, Alabama: 45 minutes; free

When my wife and I moved from New York City to Birmingham, Alabama, five years ago, I'd braced myself for culture shock. I knew as much about college football and black-eyed peas as I do thermonuclear fusion. But while I'm still rusty on the vagaries of the wishbone formation, we definitely came out ahead. We've got a yard now, and a dog, and some savings. And we live ten minutes from a snack-food factory.

Since 1923, Golden Flake, "The South's Original Potato Chip," has been supplying chips and puffs and curls and popcorn and pork skins from Florida up through Virginia, in flavors as unlikely as Tangy Pickle BBQ and just plain Hot. It is tiny next to the Utzes and Pringles of the world, and touring its 700-employee Birmingham facility can feel like visiting a friend's home-brewing shed, if instead of beer he churned out Chili Lime Pork Cracklin Super Strips.

"This is our cheese puff, corn puff, and popcorn department," said both our guide and, I hope, whoever greets me in the afterlife. There are 14-foot drums of vegetable oil and giant rotating seasoning cylinders and kind-looking ladies slicing potatoes in half (by hand, for quality control). The highlight comes at the halfway point: a basket brimming with potato chips plucked fresh off the conveyor belt, intercepted between fryer and bagging station, and offered to you for sampling. It is the perfect bite of a perfect chip. Thin but still crunchy, with just-too-much salt. Whatever's in your pantry seems like wafer-shaped Styrofoam in comparison.

It's just one of several snack breaks on the tour. If your taste buds still want more—and they will—you get a few complimentary bags to take home. Lucky for me, I was already there. —Brian Barrett

Everett, Washington: 90 minutes; $20 (adults), $14 (age 15 and under)

When you're stuck in the middle seat and the baby behind you is wailing, it's easy to forget what a miracle an airplane is. You won't after visiting Boeing—the largest building in the world, big enough to fit Disneyland with 13 acres to spare—and witnessing 30,000 employees assemble millions of parts and miles of wiring into 747s and other jumbo jets.

10. Chevrolet Corvette

Bowling Green, Kentucky: One hour; $10 (adults), $5 (ages 10 to 16)

So you're buying a Corvette Z06. First off, congratulations. A supercar. You're a lucky man. But why stop there? For an extra five grand you can hop on the assembly line at the Bowling Green factory and help build your 650-hp engine, which gets emblazoned with a plaque commemorating the experience. For those on a budget, $10 gets you the standard factory tour—still thrilling, just no keys at the end.

11. Harley-Davidson

York, Pennsylvania: Two hours; free or $35

There's a free tour, but it keeps you on the periphery of the shop. Pay the $35 for the Steel Toe Tour and you get to walk up and down the aisles, right next to the workers as bike parts are delivered to them, on-demand, by a trolley that follows magnetic tracks in the floor. At the end, the guys put each finished Harley on a dyno machine and steadily bring it up to 77 mph, running the bike through all the gears.

12. Fender Guitars

Corona, California: One hour; $10 (adults), $8 (seniors), $6 (ages 13 to 17), free (ages 12 and under)

The first time I saw a Fender Telecaster up close was in 1979 on the stage of the Hollywood Palladium. I was 14, and Joe Strummer was next to me pounding out the chords to The Clash's "White Riot"—the two of us shouting the lyrics along with a few other teenage punks who had also scrambled onstage during the encore.

Strummer was thousands of miles from his London home that night. But his battered axe? That wondrous machine had been born less than an hour south, in Fullerton, California, where in the early 1950s self-described tinkerer Leo Fender revolutionized the electric guitar. Since that encounter with Strummer, I've seen hundreds of other Fenders—as a music journalist as well as in my short time as a drummer, which included a stint with punk legends Bad Religion. But I didn't fully appreciate their magic until I strapped on a pair of Devo-like safety goggles and took my first tour of the Fender Factory.

It all starts with unremarkable blocks of alder and ash. From this wood, about 400 employees—more than a few aging longhairs among them—shape, sand, seal, and paint the classic Telecaster and more angular Stratocaster bodies. They then fit the necks, attach the wound pickups, and connect the knobs. Finally, each instrument is plugged in to a row of new Fender amps to check the sound quality.

In the summer, crowds for the twice-daily tour average 50 people. On the April morning I visited, there were only six of us, including two middle-aged Swedes. Afterward, browsing a showroom filled with memorabilia of Fender-playing guitar gods, I asked the guys what made them travel all this way. One clearly didn't understand En glish. The other only a little. He smiled, pointed to a poster of Jimi Hendrix, and simply said, "Him." Returning the gesture, I pointed across the room, to a display about punk. The centerpiece: a replica of Strummer's banged-up Telecaster. —John Albert

13. Lodge Cast Iron Manufacturing

South Pittsburg, Tennessee: Last weekend in April, 45 minutes; free

You can't get in while the factory is running—it's way too dangerous—but once a year (during April's National Cornbread Festival, naturally) Lodge opens its doors to tourists. Hard to say what's more amazing: the electromagnet that can lift five tons, the furnace that burns at 2,800 degrees Fahrenheit, or the pouring machine that uses ancient sand-molding techniques to create as many as 8,000 skillets an hour.

14. Wood -Mizer

Batesville, Indiana: 30 minutes; free

I live in rural Indiana, in the north part of a farm county. Out here, the sight of a Wood-Mizer, the industrious portable saw mill, passing by behind a pickup or being towed up onto someone's acreage for a few days of transformative deep-woods lumber milling, is a moment of awe, rare and powerful, like catching sight of a panther or something. In the right conditions, three men and a Wood-Mizer can mill enough lumber to build an entire pole barn or a fishing cabin in just a day. It is a tool of thrift, profit, and creativity. I don't own one—I'm just another fanboy—but I do have a hat. And the logo alone gets me silent nods of respect from farmers who otherwise want nothing to do with me.

I bought the hat after going on the Wood-Mizer factory tour in Batesville, Indiana. (It was cheaper than the sawmill.) The six-month-old plant churns calmly forward, the assembly line formed in the shape of a U. There's no shouting. No rushing. No alarm registered along any of the snug, worker-designed assembly. There's notable focus in the workforce—risen from pride, taken from ownership (the 34-year-old company is entirely worker owned)—that permeates the movement and pace from loading dock to shipping dock. For me, the moment I recognized the familiar machine occurred right in the turn of that U, after the powdered orange paint was kiln-dried onto the steel frame. Then the wheels were attached and the custom motor mounted.

And then I couldn't help myself. "There's the big cat," I exclaimed, like some kid seeing a ballplayer parking his car. The guy on the line heard me. "You gonna build something?" he asked, assuming I was a buyer. I smiled and pointed to my factory-supplied earplugs. "I'm just on a tour," I said, but he couldn't hear me. "Build something great," he said. He was standing over a new Wood-Mizer, so it sounded like a promise. —Tom Chiarella

Nocona, Texas: One hour; $5

When Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was seven, his father took him to a hardware store in downtown Alvin, Texas, to buy his first baseball mitt. It was a Nokona. Since 1934, the family-owned company has made gloves the same way: hand-lacing and stitching American rawhide, then beating it to hell with a mallet until the pocket is ready to snag a one-hop grounder.

16. Jelly Belly

Fairfield, California: 40 to 60 minutes; free for the self-guided tour, $47 for a guided tour that takes you on the factory floor

The thousands of jelly beans tumbling in hoppers may sound like bingo balls, only here every one drawn out is a guaranteed winner—except maybe the buttered popcorn. You can taste them at every stage of the tour, but save your appetite. The factory store at the end offers unlimited samples. If you paid for the guided tour, called Jelly Belly University, this is where you make up for your tuition.

17. Tabasco Pepper Sauce

Avery Island, Louisiana: One hour; $5.50

When I was growing up in the Cajun Triangle, any time a relative or college friend came to town, my family trotted out one of three old chestnuts: tours of swamps, plantations, or the Tabasco factory. I always hoped for the peppers—because I am afraid of alligators and ghost stories but mainly because, like all good Louisianans, I am obsessed with hot sauce.

Avery Island is only three miles wide, so most of the growing happens in South America. But this is where the rust-colored mash is packed into old bourbon barrels—about 50,000 are stacked in the warehouse—and left to ferment for three years. When ready, it is mixed with vinegar and aged for another month. Finally, the sauce gets bottled and shipped off to 180 countries.

The smells of the tour are as good as the sights—all that spice mixing with nearby forests of azalea trees. But the best part comes afterward, at the free tasting, when someone inevitably volunteers to try the inferno-level habanero sauce. That someone will always be me. —Katie Macdonald

18. Kenyon's Grist Mill

West Kingston, Rhode Island: July 23 to 24 and October 22 to 23; free

Two giant slabs of granite—each more than 150 years old and weighing more than 2,000 pounds apiece—pulverize whole grain and corn into meal and flour. That's it. A simple, centuries-old process that retains all the nutrients of the original grains and corn. Make sure to bring home some Johnny Cake mix.

Kohler, Wisconsin: Three hours; free

Lowell Kappers, the 80-year-old former Kohler employee who led our tour, worked at the Wisconsin factory, north of Milwaukee, for 44 years—31 of them as a cast-iron grinder. Three decades machining crankshafts and rail-track components. Three decades wearing a respirator helmet to keep pulverized iron dust out of his lungs. He retired in 1999 but still shows up two or three mornings a week to give tours. The factory has been offering them since 1926, a couple of decades before Kappers's dad started working there.

The tour is epic: four buildings, three hours, two and a half miles. You sidestep moving forklifts. You cross beneath conveyors shuttling tubs. You watch molten iron flow. In a cavernous brick loft called the pottery, liquid clay pumped from basement tanks filled plaster-of-paris molds before getting glazed and fired in 2,450-degree industrial kilns. In the enameling shop, an employee in a silver heat shield coated a cast-iron shower floor in enamel powder, then slid it into the orange maw of another kiln.

There are so many kilns. But Kappers didn't break a sweat, despite the heat and constant walking. The only time he really lingered was when we got to the aisle where he had worked, the spot where he jockeyed that heavy grinding wheel all those years.

"Noisiest place in the factory," he said. He wasn't complaining. He was proud. And then he was off again. —Phil Hanrahan

20. R.L. Winston Rod Company

Twin Bridges, Montana: 45 minutes; free

I learned to fly-fish on a fiberglass five-weight that my dad bought at Abercrombie & Fitch in the '60s. With his tongue sticking out in a pose of concentration, he showed me the basic ten and two. Wait for the glass to finish its slow backward flex, wait for the line to unfurl, then launch your forearm forward. Be patient, son.

This was the early '90s. By then, Dad's A&F beauty was a relic. Space-age graphite had made fiberglass obsolete. Trouble was, graphite is much stiffer than glass. Graphite rods cast like rocket launchers, and spooky trout require a delicate approach. Based in Twin Bridges, Montana, at the confluence of three legendary trout rivers, 87-year-old R.L. Winston Rod Company has figured out an alchemy that transforms graphite into velvet. The key ingredient is its staff of 40—roughly 10 percent of the population of Twin Bridges. They secure line guides with hand-wrapped thread. They balance rods by feel and sight alone. They hand-fit the ferrules connecting the rod sections to within one thirty-second of an inch. When customers send in broken rods for repair, Winston rebuilds the damaged segments from scratch.

"We've got a machine for attaching guides that's sitting upstairs collecting dust," said my tour guide, production manager Joe Begin. "We find that our employees are more efficient and make fewer mistakes."

This tireless, meticulous labor accounts for the cost of the rods: ranging from $500 to $3,000. That might sound pricey, especially when a perfectly serviceable rod will run you about $200. But near the end of the tour, I was frantically crunching numbers in my head, trying to figure out how many meals I could skip in the coming month. Fortunately, the gift shop sells only hats and sweatshirts. —Elliott Woods

Seattle, Washington: 30 to 40 minutes; free

One look at the sewing floor and it's easy to see how the garment and bag company that C.C. Filson started in 1897 to outfit Gold Rush prospectors has continued to thrive. Veteran employees, some who've been there 30 years, operate antique treadle machines customized to work with the brand's hallmark rugged twill.

Plant taxonomy is a branch of science that gets updated as new species are found almost daily.

Plants can be classified on the following criteria:-

Vascular And Non-Vascular Plants

Plants can be classified as vascular or non-vascular:-

Vascular – the group of plants which possess the vascular systems to conduct food and water throughout the plant. They own true stems, leaves and roots.

Non-vascular – the plants which do not possess vascular systems. They have a stem and leaf-like structures and rhizoids instead of true structures.

Plants are also classified based on their life cycles:-

Annuals | These are the plants which live for only one season, that is they complete their entire life cycle in a single season. They are mostly herbaceous. Examples are wheat, rice, pulses, etc.

Biennials | These are the plants which complete their life cycle in two years. They are also herbaceous and examples are cabbage, carrot, beetroot and onions.

Perennials | These are plants having a long lifespan. They generally live for more than two years. They are either woody or herbaceous. Examples of perennial plants are lavender, dianthus and lilies.

Based on taxonomy, plants can be classified as below:-

Coniferophyta (Gymnosperms) | This group of plants is primarily evergreen and is found in the temperate zone. 700 species of gymnosperms are known to date. They are vascular, meaning that they do not flower. They do not bear fruits or flowers but produce seeds. Examples of gymnosperms are cycads, pines and cedars.

Anthophyta (Angiosperms) | This group of plants can grow into herbs, shrubs, bushes and big trees. 2,50,000 species of angiosperms are known to date. The trees we see around us are mostly under this category. Angiosperms are characterised by their seeds, fully enclosed in fruits. Examples are roses, mango trees, etc. They are further divided into -

Monocotyledonous – These plants are called monocot plants. These are flowering plants which have seeds that contain only one cotyledon. The leaves of these plants have a venation pattern, and it is a parallel vein. Examples are rice, sugarcane and corn. Over 50,000 species of monocot plants are known.

Dicotyledonous – These dicot plants are flowering plants, and they grow as herbs, shrubs, and trees. The seeds have two cotyledons. It has a net-like vein pattern, and the leaves radiate outwards from the main central vein. Examples of dicotyledonous plants are eucalyptus and figs.

Plant kingdom can be broken down into further divisions like:-

Thallophyta | This is the division which includes various kinds of microorganisms like fungi and algae. These algae can be further divided into green, brown and red algae.

Bryophyta | These plants are found in water and land, examples are mosses, liverworts and hornworts.

Pteridophyta | This group of plants do not have any flowers or seeds like ferns and club mosses. Ferns have true roots, stems and leaves, produced by spores. The life cycle of these plants depends on spores rather than seeds and preceded seed-forming reproductive processes.

Gymnosperm | This group have uncoated seeds that are exposed for reproduction. and the seeds are often born in cones that are not visible until maturation.

Angiosperm | These are also called flowering plants and their seeds are protected in an ovary. Fruits are born from the flower of the plant, which is formed from the seeds (ovules) in the ovary which is often enclosed in a flower, and in turn, contains seeds for reproduction.

My Fondness For Plants

I am a person who loves gardening. My love for plants is increasing day by day as I get to see these growing. These plants not only give us food but also add to the aesthetics of one's house. When I see those flowers or fruits on the plants, it makes me feel like I’ve forgotten all my worries. Thus I believe, plants have the ability to uplift one’s emotional strength too.

As a child, I went to nurseries with my mother and saw how well taken care of the plants were. It was such a fascinating thing for me that I gradually developed an interest towards plants. Also, being a passionate home cook I love using various kinds of herbs that add a different dimension to the food and also make it prettier.

Ford Camacari Plant Tour Report Section Major Ford Camacari Automobile Assembly Plant Company Summary Ford is a public company based in United States. The plant is located at the end of a tropical rainforest in a place called Camacari in Brazil in northern state of Bahia. Ford is arguably one of the most dominant car manufacturing companies in the world. Besides the 14 percent market share in Brazil, Ford shares a sizeable proportion of automobile market industry in the world especially in United States.

It is the fourth largest in car manufacture in the world. Truly, the plant has very high standards of cleanliness. All the sections of the plant are impeccably clean. Workers are well dressed and smart. The automation system has made it possible to decongest the plant therefore maintaining cleanliness. Other sections such as the cafeteria, port, and walk sides are clean. There are no noticeable emissions from the plant thus maintaining environmental cleanliness. The plant is strategically placed in Camacari, Brazil for economic reasons.

The primary reason is that it is much more expensive to produce one unit of a car in U.S than in Brazil due to differences in costs of labor and other input costs. The port gives the plant a great advantage with regard to water transport to interior Brazil and other countries as well. Plant Efficiency Perhaps what makes the Camacari efficient, economical and successful is the adoption of near-supplier strategy. Suppliers such as Llear and Visteon are positioned as a periphery to the plant. This way they can supply their products directly to the production line.

This reduces costs of production and increases efficiency. Just in time tools such as robots makes this possible. All the supplies of the plant are available at the right time at the right place. This is because the suppliers have integrated their supply output lines directly to the production line. Many suppliers supply their products directly to ford. Currently, Ford has close to 850 long-term suppliers. Such a large number could be due to the number of components needed to make a car. The major ones include Llear Corporation and, Visteon.

Llear Corporation supplies seats and related accessories as well as electric system. Visteon supplies interiors, lighting, controls, and climate electronics among others. This makes it important for these main suppliers to be fed directly to the assembly line since their supplies make a sizeable proportion of the complete car. As of 2010, Visteon, one of the main suppliers of Ford Camacari, had almost 27, 000 employees. For the three months ending December 2010, Visteon recorded $ 1887 million dollars net sales in products and services hence making it to be a large company on the globe.

Visteon has suppliers too and they include Taiho kogyo, Fegomat, TGK among others. Visteon manufactures a wide variety of automobile components. Some of the major components supplied to Ford Camacari include interiors, lighting components, and powertrain controls. Plant Modernization Ford Camacari is arguably one of the most advanced automobile manufacturing plants in the world. Its automated production line is said to be the most flexible since it can produce five different types of vehicle platforms at the same time on the same production line.

Robots do most of the assembly and few workers are needed. Ford Camacari has a very efficient and advanced flexible manufacturing system. This is evidenced by the fact that the plant is able to produce five different vehicle platforms at the same time on the same assembly line. Many automobile manufacturing plants such as Toyota in Japan have adopted lean manufacturing concepts. Ford Camacari has adopted lean manufacturing and this is evidenced by the automation of the whole plant and having suppliers integrated in the production process thereby improving the overall utility of the plant.

The plant is well laid out with the entire auxiliary sections placed strategically near the plant. The port, collection point, cafeteria, and suppliers are well located on the whole layout plan.

Toyota is a very cultured driven corporation, before the plant tour started, I had a coffee cup that I need to dispose of and one of the plant guides told me to separate the lid and cup and dispose of them in the corresponding bins. Later on the tour, Toyota utilized the term “Muda” which refers to “wastefulness” and Toyota’s ability to reduce waste. Throughout the tour we can see how Toyota tried to reduce waste by having a multitude of bins for corresponding waste like recycling, gloves, etc. The plant tour was incredible large, that they had to develop their own traffic system. Team members had their own walk ways and any vehicles had to follow signs and “point” to the direction they wanted to travel. The company focused on the management system “Just-in-time”. The production plant that we went to only sold Toyotal Canada INC and Toyota Motor Sales. By using the “push” method of only producing cars when orders and implanting the “Just-in-time” system helped reduced waste and lower cost.

The production plant also endured another Japanese term “kaizen” which refers to continuous improvement. Around the company there are various examples that show how much Toyota values its Team members. In the plant there is a wall where team members can post suggestions to better Toyota and 90% of the suggestions have been implemented. An example of one of the successful suggestions is the Automated Guided Vehicles that were implemented. For every successful implementation, there is a cash reward for the employee that suggested it. A lot of the process in the plant have been automated, this is to help reduced the burden on the Team members. The assembly’s lines feature a moveable belt for the Team members continuously move alongside the car while working and Team member never have to lift anything heavy because it’s automated. Team members also get Job rotation, which mean that they will be doing 8-10 jobs every shift and will change every 2 hours.

Kazutaka, the former CEO of Toyota, also recently had to shut down the Kojikiri plant, so there have been many changes, but those decisions were made before the start of the year. To have the same kind of level of employee ownership as the original Toyota factory in Japan is an important step in improving the safety and efficiency of the manufacturing industry and, consequently, in Japan, we know that change always comes from outside the company and, consequently, this way could help.

The results of working together with the Japanese Government in improving safety for the future is positive. There is significant progress made in the quality of the Toyota’s cars. However, this is not a means to eliminate the challenges for the future. It is also a means for better working conditions within the company and the people, and it will also lead to improvements to bring the Japanese economy to a sustainable situation, which is the goal for the future of the company, for example.

A Brief Discussion of Animal and Plant Cells Essay

In a layman’s language, cells can be described as the essential structural and functional units of both animals and plants. Most cells found in animals and plants cannot be observed with the naked eye. However, with the invention of microscopes, animal and plant cells can be easily viewed and studied. Cells are the most minuscule units of a living organism capable of surviving independently. But it should be noted that not all cells are capable of living independently as some must combine to form tissues, which then works in dependence to each other to form organs. (MedicineNet.Com para. 1).

These organs combine with other organs to form systems. It is these systems that work together to form the living organisms. Cells act as small reservoirs of fundamental chemicals and water enfolded in a membrane. It is thought that the human body contains close to 100 trillion individual cells.

The importance of cells in all living organisms can never be underestimated. Individual cells have the capacity to specialize in different vital areas that keeps both animals and plants alive. Some cells are charged with the responsibility of getting and synthesising essential materials such as oxygen, food and water, while other cells combine to form tissues and body organs charged with the responsibility of digesting food, assisting in respiration and removing waste.

In plants, important cells such as the parenchyma cells help to store materials and support the process of photosynthesis (Teacher’s Domain para 4). Cells found in the leaves of most plants fundamentally assist the plant to absorb the necessary light and regulate gas exchange.

Animal and plant cells have strikingly similar characteristics and some noted differences. Both plant and animal cells have a nucleus, enclosed within the cell’s structure (WiseGEEK para 2). The nucleus contains the cell’s genetic information, otherwise known as DNA. Also, animal and plant cells have similar organelles that float in the watery or gel-like region between the cell membrane and the nucleus. In scientific terms, this gel-like region is known as the cytoplasm (Teacher’s Domain para. 2).

Another similar characteristic is that both cells have well formulated mitochodria and ribosomes. In both cells, the fundamental function of the mitochodria is to generate energy through aerobic respiration, while the ribosomes are chiefly entrusted with the function of synthesizing proteins. The Golgi bodies found in both animal and plant cells are responsible for transforming proteins into more complex molecules.

One of the fundamental differences between the two pairs of cells is that the plants’ cell walls are mainly made up of cellulose while the walls of animal cells are made up of a permeable membrane (WiseGEEK para. 3). The rather hardened cell wall found in plant cells functions to tolerate high pressure to build inside the cell without a chance of bursting. This is an important characteristic as the plant cell must have the capacity to accept large volumes of liquid through a process known as osmosis.

An animal cell lacks this type of cell wall, and will eventually burst if it is filled with large volumes of liquid. Another difference is that plant cells have chloroplasts, which they utilize to convert sunlight into the much needed food through the process of photosynthesis (Keagan para. 1-2). Also, plant cells contains an elongated vacuole, which resides in the cell’s cytoplasm and contains waste elements, water, and key nutrients that can be utilized or secreted as deemed necessary.

There exist many similarities and variations between the animal cells and plant cells. The functions of many of the elements found within the cells may also vary in nature and the extent of their importance. But one thing is clear; both animals and plants can never exist without these microscopic components known as cells. Indeed, their importance supersedes every fundamental organ or system found in the organism since they are the ones entrusted with the responsibility of making the organs and systems to function as desired.

A water treatment plant is a facility installed for water quality treatment when water is contaminated or inadequate to the water quality standards. This field trip (Drinking water treatment plant tour- UNH water treatment plant)  was the first time I got to see a water treatment plant. It was a place that supplies clean water to UNH and Durham. I got to see into basins that can treat water and also saw the river that is a source for the water treatment plant. Welsey East, supervisor at the UNH-DURHAM water system, told me about the way the water treatment plant’s runs. I thought that the workers are all very talented. Water treatment requires a strong background in chemistry, mathematics, and good mechanical ability. They all support its work to supply clean water. It was a very instructive time to watch it.

       There are three sources that the plant gets its water from. The Oyster River, The Lamprey River, and Spurce Hole. At first, I watched Oyster River. It looks a little bit small but it never dries up. Actually, the main source for water for the treatment plant is usually the Lamprey River. It is a very clean river, so it costs less to clean the water. So, they use the Lamprey River a lot. Also, they have to clean water in order to supply it. For the cleaning process, they use water from the disinfection basin. This water goes to the waste ponds. They recycle and reuse the water in the ponds to conserve treatment source water. It is used to clean the filters when they get dirty.

       To maintain water quality, they use in-line instruments. They are checking these instrument by testing the water by hand every day. Also, a computer talks to the in-line instruments. And if anything goes outside of the set limits, the treatment plant turns off. And they maintain water distribution 2 times per year so they can operate cleanly.

       There are some contaminants in the drinking water. There are inorganic contaminants, organic contaminants, radioactive contaminants, lead and so on. In drinking water, there are small amounts of contaminants, so it would not affect people’s health (maybe except someone who has a reason to have caution of its contaminants.). However, there are some people who are vulnerable of it, so they add some chemicals. They add sodium hydroxide( NaOH ) to control pH. Also, they use sodium fluoride(NaF) to prevent tooth decay. Water containing fluoride makes teeth mottled and the bones brittle easily. However, it can prevent tooth decay when an appropriate amount of fluoride sodium is added to water, and it is currently being tried in some countries.

After knowing that, I was wondering that if the temperature of water is all different by country, how can they select proper water treatment for their country? Is that all same route? Or will it be different case by case? I thought that the system will operate differently by where is their country and how does their country’s weather behave.

       Africa, for example, has very hot weather, organics grow more easily than in cold weather. So, its water can easily become contaminated, so it could cause a bad taste and odor that leads to a deterioration of health. And there are a lot of people that have low immunity because it is developing country, so it will be much more harmful. So, I think it cannot be same as the other country that has cold weather. They have to find some other method to purify water. I think adding some micro-organics that purify the environment could be useful. Micro-organics eat organics or minerals or something else, and decompose themselves. This method is very cheap and also organic matter is micro-organics’s prey, so it will be good for them too. Leave micro-organics in contaminated water and take them out after they eat organics that harm people. It can be one of the water treatment processes for them, which operates differently from a developed country which has better weather.

CHICAGO (CBS) --  For decades, people who live, work, or travel in the Fulton River District have enjoyed the delightful chocolate smell generated by the Blommer manufacturing plant just steps from the Chicago River. Soon that smell will just be a memory.

Blommer Chocolate Company announced Friday it is closing the manufacturing plant that has called the Fulton River District home since 1939, citing growing maintenance and operating costs for the building and equipment, which have led to reliability issues at the factory. A specific closing date was not announced.

"It was an incredibly challenging yet inevitable decision to close the Chicago plant. However, in order to propel Blommer to the next level, we must embrace progress, transformation and elevation," Mark Okita, chief operating officer and senior vice president at Blommer, said in a news release.

Meantime, Blommer is planning a $60 million expansion of its Campbellford, Canada, manufacturing plant. Blommer said, over the next few years, it also will invest $40 million in its production facilities in Pennsylvania and California.

"Chicago is a candy capital. This is where it all started," said Robert Karr, senior vice president of the Blommer Chocolate Company. "Unfortunately, things need to change."

A total of 260 Blommer employees were notified on the same day as the public announcement Friday.

"They've been working very hard to keep this plant operational for many years," Karr said. "They know the struggles that it's taken to run something of this vintage."

It was tough news to swallow for people who just walk by the premises at 600 W. Kinzie St. too.

"I'm just devastated," said Chicago resident Matt Kelly. "I'm really going to miss that smell. I don't know if you've could ever replicate it, right? And it was one of the things about Chicago."

Fans of the Blommer Chocolate aroma say it is as traditional as dyeing the Chicago River green for St. Patrick's Day.

"Sometimes it's burnt. Sometimes it smells really, really good," said Chicago resident Carson King.

There is a reason behind the mouthwatering aroma. The Chicago Blommer plant alone produces 200 million pounds of chocolate that eventually gets turned into candy bars.

"We have 750 brands that we support," said Karr. "So there's a good chance any chocolate that anyone eats in North America, we're producing a portion of that."

While the Chicago chocolate factory will be closing, Blommer will keep its corporate headquarters at the Merchandise Mart, while expanding its applications lab and new research & development center at that facility.

"The new R&D Center will support future development, concept testing, processing and ingredient research, continued application evaluation and creation to enhance the customer experience," the company said in a statement.

The new research and development center will open this fall.

"We don't see this as the end," said Greg Phillips, vice president of operations for Blommer Chocolate Company. "This is actually just the end of this actual facility."

But for some, it does amount to a bittersweet goodbye.

"I'm going to miss the smell," said King. "it will waft all around the city, and it's sad to see them go."

The Laguna Playhouse is presenting a transfer production from North Coast Repertory Theatre of “Tartuffe” by Molière. Previews begin April 17; the play runs through May 5.

Richard Baird will direct the comedy, translated to English verse by Richard Wilbur. Performances are set for Wednesdays through Fridays at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; Sundays at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. There will be added performances on Thursday, April 25 at 2 p.m. and Tuesday, April 30 at 7:30 pm. There will be no 5:30 p.m. performance on Sunday, May 5.

Caltrans plans work on PCH April 1 through 5

Unless rain or an emergency forces a rescheduling, Caltrans plans to be working on Pacific Coast Highway, between Warner Avenue and Seal Beach Boulevard from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, April 1 through 5.

The project will include concrete barrier removal, replacement and removal of curb ramps, and underground electrical work. Lanes will be closed as the work proceeds.

‘Rasquachismo’ multimedia exhibition champions lowriders

The Huntington Beach Art Center is gearing up for “Rasquachismo,” a multimedia art exhibition devoted to the “aesthetics and transformative power of lowriders,” according to organizers. Laura Black is the curator.

It will be on view from Saturday, April 6 until Saturday, June 1. Visitors to the exhibition will find paintings, a lowrider piñata, print-making and original photography that capture the lowrider spirit. The featured artists are William Camargo with Alkaid Ramirez, Justin Favela, Stephanie Mercado, Arturo Meza II, Aaron Moctezuma, José Manuel Flores Nava, Juliana Rico, Alicia Villegas-Rolon and Cora J. Quiroz.

A public reception is set for 6:30 to 9 p.m. April 6 and will be preceded that afternoon by a car show that will run from 2 p.m. until dusk in the center’s parking lot, 538 Main St., Huntington Beach. Admission is free. Gallery hours are noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, noon to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

OCC Horticulture will host annual Spring Plant Sale April 5 and 12

The Horticulture Department at Orange Coast College will host its annual Spring Plant Sale on Fridays April 5 and 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.

The public is invited to visit the horticulture program’s garden nursery to purchase plants that have been produced by students.

“It’s full circle for the students,” Horticulture Instructor and Lab Coordinator Joe Stead said. “They get ownership of the plants and see the seed out to the customer.”

Edible plants such as tomatoes, peppers, strawberries and cooking herbs, as well as other household greens and flowering selections will be available at the sale. All proceeds will go toward student scholarships and projects.

The college is located at 2701 Fairview Road, Costa Mesa. Park in Lot H or G.

First responders Picklefest set for April 13 in Newport Beach

Marissa Sur pegged as Huntington Beach director of human resources

Marissa Sur was selected this week as the director of human resources in Huntington Beach, after previously serving as a human resources manager in Newport Beach.

In her role, Sur will be responsible for directing, planning, organizing and managing the personnel functions and programs of Huntington Beach. She will oversee programs and services including employee relations, labor negotiations, recruitment and selection, classification and compensation, training, benefits and more.

Sur has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Cal State Long Beach.

New director of Costa Mesa Parks & Community Services named

Brian Gruner, a 24-year veteran of municipal government, has been appointed as Costa Mesa’s new Director of Parks & Community Services, it was announced this week by City Manager Lori Ann Farrell Harrison.

Gruner, who started as part-time recreation leader has extensive experience in the management of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, including the oversight of multimillion-dollar budgets, capital improvement projects, strategic planning, community outreach, partnership development and arts and cultural programs.

Brian Gruner has been appointed to serve as Costa Mesa's new Director of Parks and Community Services.

He most recently served as superintendent of parks and recreation for the city of Fairfield, Calif. He has also worked for Laguna Woods Village and the city of Mission Viejo.

“I’m excited to be relocating back to Orange County and being part of the city of Costa Mesa team,” Gruner said. “Having grown up in Orange County, I have fond memories of Costa Mesa from competing in tennis tournaments at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center, enjoying the Orange County Fair and swap meets, shopping at South Coast Plaza, playing golf at the Costa Mesa Country Club and enjoying the natural beauty of Fairview Park.”

Gruner holds a bachelor’s degree from Cal State Fullerton in business management and a master’s in business administration from the University of Phoenix.

Tour de Saddleback raises $1,300 for pediatric cancer research

The Tour de Saddleback on March 23 drew 302 participants who rode through Orange County while raising more than $1,300 for Irvine-based Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation , officials announced this week.

The tour took riders through Laguna Hills, Santiago Canyon, Rancho Santa Margarita and Irvine. The ride started and finished at Irvine Valley College.

“With this only being our second year of producing the Tour de Saddleback, I couldn’t be more thrilled with the outcome,” said Mike Bone, president and chief executive of Spectrum Sports Management, which produces the annual event. “It was amazing to see so many people enjoying the beauty of our community while raising funds for a great organization.”
