Master of Science in Special Education

The Master of Science degree in Special Education can be completed on a part-time basis over the course of five semesters (2.5 calendar years). Students taking the online version of the program attend courses virtually and interact with professors and classmates in real-time. All classes take place in the evenings to allow teachers to complete their work day prior to attending class. Taking the GRE is not required for entry. Admission is accepted for both Fall and Spring semesters, however the core courses begin in Fall semesters, therefore a Spring admission may not be appropriate unless the student requires some prerequisite coursework.

Coursework focus on Special Education with two options for specialization within the program: moderate and severe disabilities (MSD) track and learning and behavior disorders (LBD) track. There also are options for students to complete thesis or non-thesis tracks. The track you choose will offer coursework that shapes your research projects and clinical experiences.

The Master’s in Special Education Program is approved by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). There are eight tracks that lead to a master of science in special education. The tracks are outlined below in the table.

General Information on Electives

Depending on the track, students will be advised into 1-2 guided electives individualized to student interest.

Retention Requirements

  • A minimum GPA of 2.75 on all coursework is required and a 3.0 GPA is required on core coursework to maintain status in the program.
  • Students must demonstrate professional behaviors throughout the program in accordance with the College of Education’s Functional Skills and Dispositions.

How to Apply

  • Applicants must be certified to teach (for the options for those that hold a teaching certificate) or have an undergraduate degree in a related area (e.g., Psychology).
  • Applicants must have a minimum of a 2.75 undergraduate grade point average.
  • Applicants must secure three (3) letters of recommendations with one related to academic performance (e.g., from professor, advisor) and two related to the applicants work.
  • Applicants must submit a writing sample (e.g., paper from previous coursework; teaching philosophy, autobiographical sketch).
  • Applicants must participate in an interview with program faculty.
  • Upon acceptance, applicants must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check.

Some school districts offer incentives that recognize a master’s degree as equivalent to several years of experience, while others offer compensation for higher education credits earned, whether they result in a degree or not. The larger the school district, the greater the difference tends to be. For example, the most experienced teachers with master’s degrees earn $36,716 more than bachelors-degreed teachers with the same level of experience in the Montgomery County Public School District in Maryland.

Earning a Master’s in Special Education

Though every program is different, a master’s degree in special education generally addresses the most effective methods of teaching to the abilities of children with learning disabilities or cognitive or emotional delays. The programs are offered in-person, online, and as hybrids between the two.

How Long Does A Special Education Graduate Program Take?

Students who pursue a master’s degree in special education should expect to spend 1-2 years on coursework completing roughly 30-to-36 credit hours made up of both classwork and, in some cases, a capstone project, practicum, or thesis. Specific program lengths vary upon whether students choose a full time or part time program, whether they opt for an online degree or in-person setting, and their educational background prior to the master’s program.

If an applicant to a program has not previously taught and/or does not have an undergraduate degree in education or a  teaching certification , they may also be required to complete prerequisite classes. Alternatively, those who have already attained a certain level of experience and have teaching certifications may be able to accelerate their degree completion, particularly if they select an online program.

There are several different types of credentials required to teach. Any graduate of a master’s in special education program who has not previously been licensed will be well prepared to meet the student teaching standards their state requires. In addition to licensure, certifications are awarded following completion of both an educational curriculum and a certain level of hands-on teaching practice. These certifications may be for:

  • Secondary education
  • Special education
  • Specific subject areas

There is also a national certification board, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, that awards certifications to teachers that meet their standards. While both programs take approximately two years to complete, they diverge significantly when it comes to the content of the material presented. Students who choose to pursue a master of science or arts in teaching often plan on becoming better, more effective teachers. They want to learn new methods to educate their students and better understand their students’ needs and how best they can learn. These degrees make graduates better teachers.

By contrast, graduate degree candidates who opt for a  master’s in education  learn more about leadership and how the educational system works to serve students. Accreditation

Whether you choose an online program or one that is taught in person in a classroom setting, it is essential that you choose a school that has received the standardized endorsement of educational quality known as accreditation. Accreditation is controlled by the U.S. Department of Education, and applicants to unaccredited schools are not eligible for federal student aid.

When you complete a non-intense intervention special education program online with Purdue, you'll graduate with the requirements to earn an Indiana licensure in Blended and Online Teaching. While not a stand-alone content area or exclusive to a specific age group, the online Blended and Online Teaching licensure prepares teachers for online and blended classrooms.

Purdue's non-intensive intervention online programs utilize Blended and Online Teaching standards along with International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards to develop specific competencies that students will master upon completing their programs. With this approach, additional courses or field experiences are not required beyond those in their current plan of study. Instead, these experiences will be modified to emphasize diverse learning environments.

The Apple Teacher certification and the Google Workspace for Education Certification material is integrated into the coursework of the program. Candidates are required to obtain the necessary technology to complete the material. In EDPS 57701, candidates will develop a portfolio that will showcase their certificates and competencies they collect throughout the program.

The Orton Gillingham Online Academy is partnering with Purdue University to bring the OG Approach to pre-service teachers as a Master's degree requirement. The course ( EDPS 52400 - Effective Instruction For Students with Significant Reading Difficulties ) will explore significant reading difficulties, such a dyslexia, and essential components of effective reading instruction. This course will investigate scientifically-based reading research (SBRR), evidence-based and developmentally appropriate reading instruction and interventions to support students with exceptionalities.

Candidates completing this course will obtain an Orton Gillingham Certificate of Completion. This certificate may result in a candidate’s ability to secure an additional reading credential within his/her state.  Please contact your state’s Dept of Education or speak with your school district officials to see how this additional certificate will be viewed within their district/state.

To be considered for admission, students must complete a phone interview with an admissions advisor and submit a completed application as well as the following items:

The last century has seen major advances in the area of special education. From the emergence of advocacy groups in the 1930s to groundbreaking legislation in the Civil Rights-era, the nation has taken significant strides toward inclusive classrooms and learning.

Courses & Curriculum

The online curriculum and instruction master's degree in special education is designed for K-12 educators who are leading in the area of curriculum and instruction. The program includes 12 courses, three of which are focused on special education.

The online MEd  in Curriculum and Instruction can help prepare educators to support various student populations in all settings, including elementary and secondary public and private schools, charter schools and home schools.

Courses may include:

  • Assessment of Student Performance. Get an overview of practical performance assessments that can be used to measure student progress in the general education setting. Explore a repertoire of authentic assessments and progress monitoring tools including formative and summative assessments, diagnostic tools, performance tasks, criteria checklists, rubrics, student portfolios and the use of multiple sources of data in measuring student performance.
  • Expressive Language-Skill and Writing. Focus on strategies to help support expressive language skills for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities, primarily for writing. Learn how to scaffold the writing process, build appropriate foundational skills and understand the hidden demands of writing for students with language-based learning disabilities. Draw from relevant research on expressive language arts to develop practical teaching strategies for your own learning environments.
  • Executive Function & Study Skills. Learn how to aid students with language-based learning disabilities, many of whom struggle with the cognitive and self-regulating tasks associated with executive function. Assist with tasks including organizing time, materials and information, preparing for work, managing frustration, accessing memory and self-monitoring one's progress. Identify research-based strategies that increase and improve executive function through the use of effective study skills. While this course will explore relevant research on language-based learning disabilities and executive function, the emphasis will be placed on the practical teaching skills drawn from Landmark's Six Teaching Principles. These principles, which will be integrated throughout the course, will encourage you to provide structured opportunities for students to achieve success, use multiple instructional modalities, create skill-based micro unit tasks, ensure student skill automatization through practice and review, provide models and include the student in the learning process.

This online master's degree in special education provides you with the essential skills, knowledge, and field experience needed to become a special education instructor for students with mild to moderate disabilities. This degree program is also AAQEP and CAEP accredited and recognized.

The WGU special education master’s degree program was designed (and is regularly updated) with input from the experts on our  Education Program Council . These experts know exactly what it takes for a graduate to qualify for a successful career teaching elementary school students with diverse learning abilities and styles.

The M.A. Teaching–Special Education program at WGU is a mostly online degree program that you will complete by working and studying independently with support and instruction from WGU faculty.

This program comprises the following courses. You will typically complete them one at a time as you make your way through your program, working with your Program Mentor each term to build your personalized Degree Plan. Special Education Practices: Professional, Ethical and Legal Guidelines prepares candidates to apply practice within ethical and legal guidelines in day-to-day teaching, stakeholder interactions, and other complex situations. This course provides an overview of the professional ethics and standards from the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), which guide candidates to act in a professionally conscientious manner. This course also explores the transition planning requirements in IDEA, which include development of an individualized transition plan and ensures that planning is initiated in elementary (such as from K to elementary), middle school and continued through high school and post-secondary education. Candidates will explore the legal foundations and case laws related to special education to gain understanding of how legislation influences teaching and learning. Candidates will advocate for improved outcomes for students with exceptionalities and their families while addressing the unique needs of those with diverse social, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds. Candidates will engage in three hours of preclinical experiences, which include an interview with a special educator to gain insight on how these topics affect and inform teaching practice. This course is designed to be taken after successful completion of Essential Practices for Supporting Diverse Learners.

Management Strategies for Academic and Social Behavior prepares candidates to work effectively with students exhibiting behavior in the classroom that is below age and cultural norms. This course provides an overview of behavior disorders and their causes, and appropriate research-based intervention strategies, including positive behavior intervention and supports, multitiered systems of support (MTSS), applied behavior analysis, replacement behavior and reward strategies, culturally responsive practices, and data collection and assessment methods. Candidates emerge prepared to strategize and recommend adjustments to the learning environment that support positive behavior and student success in the classroom and beyond. This course also examines behavioral assessment and analysis, including the creation of a functional behavior assessment (FBA) and the creation and monitoring of behavioral improvement plans (BIPs) in an authentic learning environment. The candidates will determine effective strategies to promote active student engagement, increase student motivation and opportunities to respond, and enhance self-regulation of student learning. This course is designed to be taken after successful completion of Creating and Managing Engaging Learning Environments.

Assessment and Evaluation Procedures in Special Education prepares candidates to use multiple methods of assessment and data sources in making educational decisions about the student and the learning environment. This course is designed to help provide an understanding of how assessment data is used during screening in multitiered systems of support (MTSS), the eligibility process, the evaluation process, progress monitoring, and data-based instructional decision making. Candidates analyze informal assessments to determine how students access and demonstrate knowledge in the core curriculum. This course is designed to be taken by candidates after they have completed Special Education Practices: Professional, Ethical, and Legal Guidelines.

Collaborative Techniques with Partners for Effective IEPs prepares candidates to apply team processes and communication strategies to collaborate in a culturally responsive manner with families, paraeducators, and other professionals (within the school, other educational settings, and the community) to plan programs and access services for students with exceptionalities and their families. The course introduces ways to enhance parental involvement and family engagement while teaching families and students advocacy throughout the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and transition planning processes. Candidates will develop plans for transition services that focus on a coordinated set of student-centered activities designed to facilitate the student's movement from school to post-school activities, including post-secondary education. This course also focuses on the components of the IEP and how the practice of effective communication and collaboration skills is key to the program's development and implementation. The candidates will actively seek information from and about families and take primary responsibility for maintaining respectful, ongoing, open communication to jointly identify and meet learning goals that are informed by assessment data. Candidates will engage in three hours of preclinical experiences that includes a simulated collaborative experience in which skills learned can be applied. This course is designed to be taken after successful completion of Special Education Practices: Professional, Ethical and Legal Guidelines.

Special Education Methods of Instruction and Intervention introduces candidates to a repertoire of evidence-based instructional strategies to advance the learning of students with exceptionalities. The course focuses specifically on strategies for intensifying and individualizing instructional interventions; making instructional decisions based on progress-monitoring data; collaborating with general education teachers and paraeducators; teaching to mastery; promoting generalization of learning; and teaching students with exceptionalities how to use self-assessment, problem solving, and other cognitive strategies to organize critical content and meet their needs. This course will also focus on the interrelationship between curriculum, instruction, and assessment, with emphasis on the role of assessment and student data in planning, designing, delivering, and modifying instruction in accordance with diverse learner needs. Candidates will know and understand how learning occurs, how students construct knowledge, acquire skills, and develop disciplined thinking processes. This course is designed to be taken after successful completion of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, Mathematics Methods and Instruction for Students with Mild/Moderate Disabilities, and Language Arts Instruction and Interventions.

Designing Instruction for Elementary Learners with Mild to Moderate Exceptionalities prepares candidates to use evidence-based instructional practices appropriate for elementary students receiving special education services. The course includes cognitive and metacognitive strategies that elementary students can use to acquire new content knowledge and generalize skills across learning environments. It also provides opportunities for candidates to incorporate intensive instructional strategies and practice making accommodations to elementary math, reading, and language arts lesson plans based on learner characteristics, performance data, and individualized education program (IEP) goals. In addition to discussing how to make appropriate accommodations, the course teaches candidates how to assess student learning through progress monitoring and apply intensive interventions when warranted. Candidates apply their understanding of academic subject content specifically focusing on reading, writing, and math curricula of the general curriculum to inform instructional decisions for individual with exceptionalities. Candidates design appropriate learning and performance accommodations and modifications for individuals with exceptional learning needs in academic subject matter content of the general curriculum curricula. This course is designed to be taken after successful completion of Special Education Methods of Instruction and Intervention.

Educational Psychology and Human Development of Children and Adolescents is a key component of WGU’s Professional Core and is a required course for all Master of Arts in Teaching candidates. This course introduces candidates to research-validated theories of human development and psychology, spanning from early childhood through adolescence, and their applications in teaching practice. Candidates will explore how linguistic, physical, cognitive, and social development influence the learning process and inform educational approaches. This course will also cover appropriate instructional and assessment strategies that can be used to support learning for developmentally diverse student populations. The course will culminate in analysis of learning theories related to educational psychology in order to develop a personal educational philosophy. Candidates will engage in four hours of preclinical experiences, which include virtual classroom observations from the perspective of educational psychology and learner development. Cross-cutting themes of technology and diversity are interwoven for further development.

Mathematics Methods and Instruction for Students with Mild/Moderate Exceptionalities helps candidates learn how to implement effective math instruction in today’s diverse classrooms in both the elementary and secondary settings. Topics include differentiated math instruction, mathematical communication, mathematical tools for instruction, assessing math understanding, integrating math across the curriculum, critical thinking development, standards-based mathematics instruction, and mathematical models and representation for students with mild to moderate exceptionalities.

Language Arts Instruction and Intervention helps students learn how to implement effective language arts instruction and intervention in the elementary classroom. Topics include written and spoken English, expanding students' knowledge, literature-rich environments, differentiated instruction, technology for reading and writing, assessment strategies for reading and writing, and strategies for developing academic language. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Elementary Reading Methods and Interventions provides candidates with an in-depth look at best practices for developing reading and writing skills. Course content examines the science of reading, the stages of and approaches to literacy development, differentiation, technology integration, literacy assessment, and Multitiered Systems of Supports (MTSS), including the comprehensive response to intervention (RTI) model used to identify and address the needs of learners who struggle with reading comprehension. This course is designed to be taken after successful completion of Introduction to Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.

Schools as Communities of Care is a key component of WGU's Professional Core and is a required course for all Master of Arts in Teaching candidates. This course introduces candidates to strategies for providing a culturally inclusive learning environment that meets the social and emotional needs of learners while taking into account theories and philosophical perspectives on child and adolescent development and learning. Emphasis is placed on fostering a collaborative relationship with families, caregivers, and community stakeholders, and on leveraging community resources to support each learner’s growth and well-being to build a strong foundation for their academic and personal success. Topics addressed include culturally responsive practice, social and emotional learning (SEL), youth mental health, substance abuse, suicide awareness and prevention, abuse within families, and professional responsibilities to ensure student wellbeing. The course will culminate in evidence-based, practical application of strategies that support the whole child in a community of care. Candidates will engage in seven hours of preclinical experiences, include virtual observations of learning environments that involve parents and families in their children's education and an interview with an educational professional. Cross-cutting themes of technology and diversity are interwoven for further development.

Fundamentals of Diverse Learners is a key component of WGU's Professional Core and is a required course for all initial licensure candidates. This course prepares candidates to consider and address the wide range of learning needs in the classrooms of today. This course teaches candidates to identify and support the needs of diverse populations of learners, including, for example, students with disabilities (Including Dyslexia), students who are English language learners, and students who are gifted and talented. Practical strategies for differentiating instruction while creating a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment are explored. This course helps candidates develop skills for partnering with parents and advocating for all students, particularly those impacted by provisions of IDEA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Multitiered systems of support are addressed to prepare candidates for their future classrooms as they seek to select appropriate instructional practices and interventions to best serve their students. Candidates will engage in four hours of preclinical experiences that include a simulated teaching experience in which skills learned can be applied. Creating and Managing Engaging Learning Environments is a key component of WGU's Professional Core and is a required course for all Master of Arts in Teaching candidates. This course provides candidates with research-based strategies and approaches to establishing and maintaining a safe and productive learning environment that supports the success and well-being of all P-12 learners. Topics addressed include consistent routines and expectations, student engagement, positive behavior support, motivation and its effect on student achievement, active learning and self-direction, and fostering a sense of community through collaboration. Candidates will design a classroom management plan for their future classroom based on theory and high-leverage practices for meeting the diverse needs of learners in a productive and collaborative learning environment. Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment is a key component of WGU's Professional Core and is a required course for all Master of Arts in Teaching candidates. This course provides candidates with theoretical foundations and strategies for creating engaging and standards-aligned lessons that meet the needs of all learners in the P-12 classroom. This course focuses on the interrelationship between curriculum, instruction, and assessment, with emphasis on the role of assessment and student data in planning, designing, delivering, and modifying instruction in accordance with diverse learner needs. This course will culminate in the application of evidence-based strategies related to the interdependence of and alignment among curriculum, instruction, and assessment in student-centered P-12 teaching and learning. Candidates will engage in three hours of preclinical experiences, which include conducting virtual classroom observations and recording a short teaching segment. Using Educational Technology for Teaching and Learning is a key component of WGU's professional core and is a required course for all Master of Arts in Teaching candidates. This course presents strategies for integrating technology into classroom practices to improve instruction and student learning according to the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards. Candidates will evaluate digital tools and their potential classroom applications such as enhancing curriculum, enabling communication with students and families, and increasing student engagement. Topics covered include ethics, equity and access to technology, and appropriate use of technology by P–12 students. Assistive technologies to meet the needs of a diverse learner population also will be addressed. The course will culminate in evidence-based, practical application of current standards, strategies, theories, or philosophical perspectives related to the use of technology in teaching and learning. Candidates will engage in three hours of preclinical experience that include virtual observations of classroom practices incorporating technology to support educational goals. Cross-cutting themes of technology and diversity are interwoven for further development.

Secondary Reading Instruction and Intervention explores the comprehensive, student-centered Response to Intervention (RTI) assessment and intervention model used to identify and address the needs of learners in middle school and high school who struggle with reading comprehension and/or information retention. Course content provides educators with effective strategies designed to scaffold instruction and help learners develop increased skill in the following areas: reading, vocabulary, text structures and genres, and logical reasoning related to the academic disciplines. This course has no prerequisites.

Disciplinary Literacy examines teaching strategies designed to help candidates to develop the literacy skills necessary to read, write, and think critically while engaging content in different academic disciplines. Course content highlights strategies to help candidates distinguish between the unique characteristics of informational texts while improving comprehension and writing proficiency across the curriculum. Strategies to encourage inquiry and cultivate skills in critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity also are addressed. This course is designed to be taken after successful completion of the Introduction to Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment course OR Introduction to Instructional Planning and Presentation AND Instructional Planning and Presentation in Special Education.

Pre-Clinical Experiences in Special Education provides candidates the opportunity to observe and participate in a wide range of in-classroom teaching experiences in order to develop the skills and confidence necessary to be an effective teacher. Candidates will reflect on and document the 75 hours of in-classroom observation and experience in their performance assessments. Prior to entering the classroom for the observations, candidates will be required to include a cleared background check, passing scores on the state or WGU required basic skills exam and a completed resume.

Teacher Performance Assessment in Special Education course is a culmination of the wide variety of skills learned during your time in the Teachers College at WGU. In order to be a competent and independent classroom teacher, you will showcase a collection of your content, planning, instructional, and reflective skills. This course is eligible for an In Progress grade. Please see the Grading Scale Policy for more information.

Professional Portfolio requires candidates to create an online teaching portfolio that demonstrates professional beliefs, growth, and effective teaching practices from the Demonstration Teaching experience. The portfolio includes reflective essays (educational beliefs, professional growth, and collaboration with stakeholders) and professional artifacts (resume and artifacts with commentary on academic language, systems of student support, education technology, and professional communication with families) developed and acquired during Demonstration Teaching. Cohort Seminar in Special Education provides mentoring and supports teacher candidates during their demonstration teaching period by providing weekly collaboration and instruction related to the demonstration teaching experience. Master of Teaching, Special Education Admission Requirements

To be considered eligible for enrollment into this M.A. in Teaching, Special Education (K-12) degree program, you must provide official transcripts that demonstrate you have earned a bachelor’s degree from a recognized, institutionally accredited (also known as regionally accredited) university and earned a GPA of at least 2.5 (or higher, depending upon your state), or the competency-based equivalent, in that program. Applicants with a GPA lower than a 2.5 but a 2.0 or above may seek admission by submitting passing scores from the WGU program required basic skills test (e.g. Praxis CORE). 

Students who are seeking initial teacher licensure in a bachelor’s, post-baccalaureate, or master’s program must also pass a state-specific basic skills test for the state in which they live as a prerequisite to Student Teaching . (Registering and paying for the test is the student’s responsibility.) This requirement can be met either prior to admission or before beginning the Foundations of Teaching subject area once you are in your WGU program.

What grades will I be able to teach?

It depends on your state and which Teachers College program you complete, so it is best to ask your Enrollment Counselor. Typically, teachers with an elementary education license can teach anywhere from kindergarten through 8th grade, and secondary teachers in math, English, or science can teach anywhere from 5th to 12th grades. K–12 special education licenses typically enable teachers to work with students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

How long is Student Teaching?

It depends on your state and your program, but for most Teachers College programs, Student Teaching is typically about the length of one full traditional school semester. Student teaching is a minimum of 12–16 weeks, but it can be longer in other programs.

How do I set up my Student Teaching?

BCBA Exam Requirements

UND's Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) specialization prepare students to take the Behavior Certification Board exam and to become a behavior analyst (BCBA).

The Board requires that exam applicants have completed:

  • A graduate degree (master's or higher)
  • Verified course sequence (VCS) of ABA courses
  • 1,500-2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork

UND's programs can support each or a combination of these requirements.

This option is for students who would like to complete all three of the Board requirements to be eligible to take the Board exam. Students are not required to complete supervised fieldwork hours with UND faculty support, but are highly encouraged to do so.

A study of the principles and procedures for screening, identifying and evaluating young children with special needs. Emphasis will be placed on exposing students to available assessment instruments and providing opportunities for actual testing of preschoolers. Prerequisite: Admission to one of the master's programs in special education.

SPED 502. Braille Reading and Writing. 2 Credits.

In this course students learn: 1) to read and write the literary code of grade 2 braille and 2) to teach the literary code of grade 2 braille to students of all ages. Prerequisite: Must demonstrate proficiency in Braille Code I and Braille Code II, or, must enroll in Braille Code II and Braille Reading and Writing concurrently. S.

SPED 567. Assessment in Autism Spectrum Disorder. 3 Credits.

This course is a required course in a sequence of interdisciplinary courses focusing on autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This course will address the entire process of program planning for students with ASD including screening, evaluative assessment, ongoing assessment, using assessment to guide intervention planning, and monitoring progress. Students will explore a variety of methods and tools commonly used with individuals with ASD; specifically, standardized assessments, checklists, rating scales, structured observation tools, and curricular based assessments. The evolution toward inclusive classrooms has meant that teachers in all grades and subjects are increasingly called on to work with children with a broad range of abilities. Giving master’s candidates the tools to support each child learn and grow is the mission of Lehigh’s M.Ed. in Special Education. 

The master’s program is designed for those who hold a bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related fields and seek to gain effective methods for working with and advocating for individuals with disabilities. Lehigh’s faculty in Special Education are noted experts in such areas as autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, academic interventions, and emotional and behavioral disorders. Our students engage in coursework to become skilled practitioners in establishing effective teaching and learning environments for students who have a broad range of learning, cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and speech/language needs.   

Those seeking to earn a master’s degree take required courses and choose one of the following areas of concentration:

  • Intensive Academic Intervention will advance educator’s knowledge and use of evidence-based instructional practices to effectively teach students who have intensive academic needs, such as students with learning disabilities. 
  • Low Incidence Disabilities will advance educator’s knowledge and use of evidence-based instruction to effectively teach students with low incidence disabilities, such as students with multiple and severe disabilities. 
  • English as a Second Language is for educators to gain knowledge and use of evidence-based instructional practices to support the learning and second language development of English learners (ELs) in PK-12 settings. Students with a Level 1 instruction certification who choose this concentration will also earn an ESL certification upon successfully completing all coursework. 
  • General Special Education Studies is for educators to gain in-depth knowledge about special education. 

Our program is designed to be flexible, so that students have the opportunity to obtain two areas of concentration (e.g., Intensive Academic Intervention and Low Incidence Disabilities). Students also have the opportunity to earn a certificate by completing approved coursework in a particular area: Certificates in Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Wellness and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages are approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The certificate in Behavior Analysis fulfills the coursework required for BCBA certification. 

Centennial School Learn more about Centennial School today! Many of our current master’s students who are pursuing their Special Education Master’s degree and/or certification work at our highly acclaimed and nationally recognized lab school: Centennial School. A primary goal of Centennial is to prepare special education teachers to work with students with emotional and behavioral needs and autism spectrum disorder  as well as their families. Graduate students work full time as teacher associates, under supervision, while completing their Special Education Master’s degree and/or certification. Graduate students who work at Centennial School also receive an additional two hours of on-site training every week on topics specific to students with emotional and behavioral disorders and autism spectrum disorder. The workshops are usually presented by professional staff who work at the school and on occasion from one of Centennial's outstanding cadre of professional consultants.  Centennial School offers our graduate students optimal opportunities to be engaged in hands-on learning and immersed in evidence-based practices, including positive behavior support strategies and data-based instruction.  Click here for Centennial School employment opportunities. Hold a Valid California Clear or Preliminary Ed Specialist Credential for One of the Concentration Areas

Admissions staff will verify this on the  California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) website . Applicants must hold a preliminary credential to be eligible for this Master's program. If the applicant desires, they can complete the clear credential coursework while completing the Master's degree.

Letters of Recommendation

Letters of recommendation are only required if you did not attend SDSU for your preliminary credential. If you earned your preliminary SPED credential at a school other than SDSU, then please contact 2 individuals who you have interacted with professionally and who would be able to write a letter of recommendation for you. Please have these letters emailed to the admission staff at  [email protected]

Employment Required for Clear Special Education Credential

If you are applying to the Clear SPED credential program in addition to this Master's degree, starting Fall 2018 employment verification will be required to enroll in the  Special Education Clear Credential program . You must be employed as a "teacher of record."  Substitute teaching and aid positions will not meet this requirement.

Program Overview

The Master of Science in Special Education Degree program is an advanced academic program which is aimed at developing advanced skills and knowledge of current research in special education and demonstration of the ability to engage in reflective inquiry. In our graduate coursework, we provide candidates with multiple opportunities to build upon their critical thinking and writing skills with those skills being applied in the capstone experience of a comprehensive exam or a thesis.

With a Master of Science in Special Education, our graduates have been able to serve in leadership positions in their school districts or agencies, pursue and earn a Doctorate Degree in Education or related fields at top-tiered universities, and teach as part-time lecturers at CSULB and other higher education institutions. The Master's program is comprised of a total of 30 units. Typically students complete the program in 1.5 to 2 years.

Two pathways are currently offered to meet individual needs:

  • Pathway 1  is a fully online program designed for classroom teachers who completed an accredited post-baccalaureate credential program. These students complete 6 core classes and would potentially use 12 post-baccalaureate semester units to reach the 30 unit minimum required for the degree. Students may finish the program in three semesters.  
  • Pathway 2   is designed for credentialed classroom teachers who completed an accredited credential program during their bachelor's degree or non-credentialed education-related professionals . These students also complete 6 fully online core classes as well as an additional 4 courses (12 units) that support their educational interests to reach the 30 unit minimum required for the degree. Students may finish the program in three or four semesters and classes may be offered in a combination of online, hybrid and in-person.

Applying to the Program

While a preliminary Education Specialist credential is not an eligibility requirement for the Master's degree in Special Education, core courses in the program are at an advanced level and build on coursework in our initial credential program. Candidates who have not had this coursework will work with the program advisor in developing their program plan. Candidates who want to teach special education must earn their  Preliminary Education Specialist credential .

We acknowledge the diverse work and lived experiences as well as relevant coursework from other disciplines. Therefore candidates with experience working with populations with disabilities who are not educators (ABA therapists, for example) are encouraged to apply.

But before you start submitting applications, it’s important to know what admission boards typically look for. While each Master’s Special Education program has its own prerequisites, here are some common requirements you’ll likely have to fulfill.

Basic Admission Requirements

The most basic requirement for Master’s in Special Education programs is a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. On top of that, you will likely be required to submit official school transcripts, letters of recommendations, and a personal statement or writing sample. Here’s what to know about each.

Official Transcripts

Official transcripts can be ordered from your alma mater’s office of admissions or registrar’s office for a fee. However, your transcripts won’t likely be sent directly to you. They’ll be sent to the Master’s program you’re applying to. Because of this, it may be a good idea to follow up and make sure the school received your transcripts. If you attended multiple schools during your undergraduate studies, you’ll likely need to submit transcripts from them all.

Letters of Recommendation

Most Special Education Master’s programs require applicants to submit two to three letters of recommendation. This might include one letter from someone involved in your education (a professor, academic advisor, etc.) and an additional one or two letters from professional colleagues who can speak to your experience working with children. Researchers, fellow teachers, mentors, and supervisors may all fulfill this requirement.

Personal Statements and Writing Samples

Programs that require personal statement essays often want applicants to communicate their current knowledge, their capacity to learn more, and what goals they have. You might write about volunteering with autistic children or children with disabilities from underprivileged backgrounds. Or perhaps a mentor helped you reach a child you just couldn’t seem to connect with — how did you integrate that learning moment into your skillset? Each school likely has its own criteria for personal essays so be sure to analyze instructions carefully.

Some programs allow applicants to submit previous writing samples instead of a completely new essay. This might be a research project you’re particularly proud of or a literature review you did while investigating different educational techniques. Try to choose a paper that demonstrates your critical thinking, organizational, and writing skills. But once again, be sure to double check each program’s writing sample guidelines. They may differ slightly between schools. In fact, some schools require both writing samples and personal statements.

Academic Performance Criteria

To attract the most qualified candidates, many Special Education Master’s programs require students to have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0. However, some schools have GPA requirements as low as 2.5.

Additionally, some schools require applicants to take the General version of the Graduate Records Exam (GRE). According to the Educational Testing Service (the agency that administers the GRE and other subject-specific standardized tests ), the GRE tests students’ verbal and quantitative reasoning skills as well as their analytical writing abilities.

Each school weighs GRE scores and scores of individual sections differently so it’s important to investigate your desired program’s standards. At some schools, students with lower GPAs have the option to submit GRE scores to bolster their chances of being accepted.

Prerequisite Course History

If you have a stellar undergraduate GPA, great reference letters, and above-average GRE scores, there’s still one important question to consider: “Do I have the right kind of bachelor’s degree to get into a Master’s Special Education program?” Fortunately, the answer to that question is likely a resounding “Yes!” Students from all types of backgrounds can pursue Master’s degrees in Special Education. But depending on your background, you may be required to take certain prerequisite courses before diving into your Master’s education.

Students Without Bachelor’s Degrees in Education

If you have no background in teaching, you may want to investigate Special Education Master’s programs that have degree tracks for people outside of educational studies. Before actually pursuing your degree, you may be required to take classes on subjects like:

  • Human development.
  • Educational theory and pedagogy.
  • Child psychology.
  • Developmental and learning disabilities.

In many cases, you’ll also take classes that fulfill state teaching licensure requirements. This way, you can earn a Master’s in Special Education while also becoming eligible to work in schools all at the same institution.

If you have a bachelor’s in a subject like sociology or psychology, you may fulfill some prerequisite course requirements. If that sounds like your situation, it’s important to work with school administrators on determining which credits count towards their prerequisite requirements and which ones don’t.

Students With Bachelor’s Degrees in Education

If you earned a bachelor’s in education, have a state teaching license, and/or are a practicing teacher, you might receive credit for your previous experience or classes. However, you may still want to verify that your previous courses count towards the school’s prerequisite requirements. If they do, you may even be able to earn your Master’s in Special Education online in as little as two years — and do it on your own time.

But keep in mind that as you learn more about this rewarding field of education, you’ll also have to meet your state’s requirements for special education teachers. According to TEACH National, a nonprofit founded by the Department of Education that helps budding teachers understand teaching certification regulations , these requirements vary widely between states.

Typically, special education teachers in public schools need to be licensed while those working in private schools don’t. Fortunately, Special Education Master’s programs often take these regulations into account and put their students on the right path through accredited course sequences and hands-on learning opportunities.

Whether you come from a teaching background or not, pursuing a Master’s in Special Education can prepare you to make learning a truly equitable endeavor. It may take some time to find the right program and understand its prerequisites, but your career in special education could very well change the lives of the students, families, and teachers in your community for the better.

The program's primary goal is to empower professionals as thoughtful educators who use best practices when assisting and empowering students with disabilities. Research and data-driven decision-making are emphasized throughout the program. How to Write a Letter of Interest to Enroll in Master's in Special Education

Introduction

If you are writing a letter of interest to enroll in a master’s in special education, then you will start with the introduction. Make sure you read the application carefully and that you understand the question you need to answer in your personal statement. For example, many applications will ask you to write a one-page letter outlining why you are a good fit for the university’s program. It is important not to just repeat information that you have already included in your application, but to answer the question and focus on personal information that will help you write an effective letter of interest to enroll in a master’s in special education.

Many people will begin their letters with an anecdote or personal story about why they are driven to pursue a career in special education. For example, you may have spent a summer working at a special needs camp, and now special education is your passion. You want the introduction to be concise but detailed and set you apart from the hundreds of other applicants applying to the program.

Body Paragraphs

In the body paragraphs of your letter of interest to enroll in a master’s in special education, you will answer the question asked on the application. The important thing in the body paragraphs is not to put too much information in these paragraphs. Choose your most distinguished accomplishments, and make sure by including these they show your strengths and your desire to be enrolled in this master’s degree program. For example, if you have been working as a special education teacher (with your bachelor’s degree) and you were nominated as teacher of the year at your school, you would include this accomplishment in your body paragraphs. While mentioning this accomplishment, you would also want to write how this experience has driven you to continue your education by pursuing a master’s in special education.

Each body paragraph in your letter of interest to enroll in a master’s in special education should be focused on either a different aspect that makes you a great candidate for the program or answer a question asked on the application such as your career goals or why you are a good fit for the program. Remember, the examples of your accomplishments should fit the focus of the paragraph. Even if you had a 4.0 GPA during your undergraduate career, if it doesn’t fit in the paragraph, don’t include it.

Conclusions are often the hardest to write, especially because many personal statements are only one-to-two pages long (about 250 to 500 words), and so you don’t want to just repeat yourself in the conclusion of your letter of interest to enroll in a master’s in special education. In your conclusion paragraph, tie together your strengths or reasons for wanting to apply for this special education master’s degree program by mentioning a long-term career goal or how it will benefit your current students.

Finally, as with any piece of writing, you will want to revise and edit your letter until you have a tight piece of writing that presents you and your career goals to your prospective school and makes you stand out from the other applicants.

About the Program

Become an education specialist while earning your master of arts in teaching.

An Education Specialist is a credentialed special education teacher who is authorized to conduct educational assessments related to access to and progress within the core curriculum and provide educational support to students with disabilities in their area of specialization. Our special education programs are committed to age-appropriate, strengths-based, integrated educational programs for students with disabilities. Special education means support services, not placement in special education classrooms. Our courses are offered in the spirit and practice of inclusive education with a strong emphasis for providing high quality and rigorous special education services in the general education environment. Candidates develop skills in discovering ways for students to participate meaningfully and to be successful without being removed from their peers with or without disabilities.

Teachers who specialize in supporting and providing educational services to children and youth with disabilities are powerful change agents in their lives. They build meaningful relationships with their students, gain a deeper understanding of who they are so that they can then partner with the students, their families, and their school teams to build a plan of supports and services that tap into students’ unique ways of learning and communicating. In the field of special education, we often celebrate those little successes that make a huge difference, like when a student independently uses their communication device for the first time, or attends the school dance with their friends, or learns a new strategy for reading. Career Options

You have many career options when you earn your Education Specialist credential.

When you earn your ECSE credential you can work as:

  • Early intervention provider, visiting families’ homes to coach them on supporting their infant and/or toddler with disabilities or developmental delays
  • Infant/Toddler center education specialist in special education or inclusive settings
  • Preschool or kindergarten education specialist in special education or inclusive settings
  • Itinerant education specialist, visiting various programs to consult with general education teachers on how to support their preschool, TK, or kindergarten students with disabilities

Depending on your interest in the types of support needs of students, when you earn your MMSN or ESN credential, you can work as:

  • K - 12 Education Specialist in special education or inclusive settings
  • Transition Specialist

And with your masters you can advance over time to more leadership roles such as:

  • Curriculum Development Specialist
  • Education Consultant
  • Curriculum Evaluator

What are the Salaries like?

As a blended Master of Arts in Teaching in Special Education (MAT-SPED) with any of our special education credentials, our graduates start at a higher pay level due to the master’s degree and additional units.

Starting salaries range from $45,000-$55,000. There are currently many signing bonuses available.

Program Pathways

All program applications are due february 1st, preliminary credential program pathways.

Our programs offer a blended preliminary education specialist credential teacher preparation program with Master of Arts in Teaching in Special Education (MAT). Students complete their credential then can opt to continue for one more year to complete their MAT-specific coursework while working in the field. Some students either continue with the MAT in the summer following graduating with their credential or return later to complete it within 7 years from admission into the program.

All Preliminary Credential Programs offer two pathways to earning your preliminary education specialist credential:

  • 1-year, Summer start (3 semester) Residency/Student Teaching Pathway This pathway is an intensive program for non-working student teachers & Residents of the Sacramento Metro Special Education Teacher Residency scholarship (SMSTR). The Field Coordinator places you in a classroom relevant to your credential 4 to 5 days a week. With this option, students are not able to work during the week as they are completing their fieldwork as volunteers in their coordinating teachers’ programs/classrooms and taking courses in the evenings and during the day. Financial supports can make this possible!
  • 2-year, Fall start (4 to 5 semester) Working/Intern Pathway This pathway is for those seeking to work in a classroom/program while completing their credential; typically for those pursuing an intern credential in their second year of the program (click here to learn more about our intern option: Guidelines for EDSP Intern Credentials ). With this option, students intend to work in a classroom or program relevant to their credential such as a paraprofessional or emergency permit teacher (perhaps eventually as an intern). They work with Sac State education specialist program’s field coordinator to review and approve their place of employment as their fieldwork site since you they will be working in a program or classroom where you they will complete their fieldwork experience during the day while taking courses in the evenings. Note: students will need to gain experience in a variety of classrooms thus may need to change positions in their second year or find time to observe and complete fieldwork in other classrooms/programs.

Early Childhood Special Education - Added Authorization

For current credentialed Education Specialists or those enrolled in our Mild to Moderate Support Needs (MMSN) or Extensive Supports Needs (ESN) programs, the ECSE-AA offers a one-year pathway to adding on the authorization to teach young children with disabilities birth to preschool. This is an online program.

Credential Concentrations

  • Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE)

The ECSE credential authorizes you to provide educational services to young children with all types of disabilities birth to kindergarten. Students learn to partner with and coach families raising infants & toddlers with disabilities in their homes and work with a team supporting young children with disabilities in preschool and kindergarten programs. The ECSE program is a distance learning program with courses offered in an online format for students who live more than 30 miles from campus and in a hybrid format for local students. We also offer the ECSE-Added Authorization for current Education Specialists.

  • Mild to Moderate Support Needs (MMSN)

The MMSN credential authorizes you to provide educational services to children and youth with mild to moderate support needs ages 5 to 22 years old. Students learn to work with a school team to provide supports and services to students with a variety of disabilities who have mild to moderate support needs.

  • Extensive Support Needs (ESN)

The ESN credential authorizes you to provide educational services to children and youth with significant support needs ages 5 to 22 years old. Students learn to work with a school team to provide supports and services to students with a variety of developmental disabilities who have significant support needs.

MAT in Special Education

The MAT-SPED program focuses on inquiry-based education which includes hands-on instruction with problem-based learning and issues-centered curriculum and a focus on reflection during the teaching and research process. The program foundation rests in social justice and equity in education for all children and youth, including those with disabilities, and their families. The materials and associated activities presented in the MAT coursework are highly integrated to support candidates with successful completion of the Master of Arts in Teaching degree. The MAT-only courses are taken in the summer, fall, and spring after completion of the ECSE, MMSN, or ESN Preliminary credentials. Students have up to 7 years to earn the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT-SPED) with some continuing the summer following their graduation from the credential program while others take a break for one year (or more) before returning to complete their MAT-SPED. Note: taking a Leave of Absence is possible as long as they complete their requirements within the 7 years from admission to the credential + MAT-SPED program.

For applicants that may have graduated years ago, had poor grades or taken an alternative career path before applying, the path to medical school is not so linear.

Getting into a U.S. medical school is no easy feat. With just around 40% of applicants matriculating, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges, those applying must set themselves apart and be as competitive as possible.

For some, the path to medical school is a straight trajectory from college, but for others the path is not as linear. Applicants may have graduated years ago, had poor grades or taken an alternative career path before applying. To be competitive enough to gain admission, many consider a postbaccalaureate program, commonly referred to as a postbac, or a special master's program.

Special master's programs provide graduate-level courses and appear as a separate GPA in students' applications. They last one or two years and are designed with premed students in mind.

Schools that offer them understand that most students will be enrolling to strengthen their application to medical school. As such, they design the programs to replicate aspects of med school, including having students take courses along with first-year med students and sit for national medical exams.

Here's what to know about special master's programs to help you decide if enrolling in one is the next best step in your path to medical school.

Type of Degree Earned

Each program offers a different master's degree at the completion of the requirements. Students commonly receive a master's in medical sciences or a master's in medical physiology.

Keep in mind that medical school admissions committees are most interested in the type of coursework – the difficulty level and whether courses are similar to those taken by a first-year medical student – rather than the specific degree obtained.

How Med School Admissions Committees View Special Master's Programs

When you submit your American Medical College Application Service, or AMCAS, application, your undergraduate and graduate grades will be cumulated as separate GPAs . Each medical school has its own system when considering these GPAs, but in general, if an applicant has a low undergraduate GPA, a high graduate GPA will help compensate for this.

Medical schools tend to recognize special master's programs as more rigorous and representative of medical school than, say, an MBA or online Master of Public Health degree. Therefore, a 4.0 from a special master's program will most reflect your academic capabilities as a future medical student.

Benefits of a Special Master's Program

Most special master's programs offer a variety of activities with the goals of premed students in mind. Many provide research opportunities, which is helpful if this is a potential area of weakness in your med school application. They may also have opportunities for clinical experience and volunteer work.

In addition, many provide MCAT preparation and advising to ensure all areas of an application are in check.

Downsides of a Special Master's Program

Special master's programs are not for everyone. The programs can be costly, with tuition at some universities upward of $50,000 per year.

Additionally, you have to apply to these programs, and although they cater to premeds that have lower GPAs, acceptance is not guaranteed.

Students must also consider the timing of applying. For instance, if the degree length for a special master's program is one year, you ideally want to submit your medical school application after having completed the program – to demonstrate your success. This means that you would not matriculate into med school until a year after completing the program.

In addition, you should have all of your medical school prerequisite courses completed before the special master's program. This is because the program will offer coursework that may not satisfy requirements for general science courses such as organic chemistry or physics.

Who Should Consider a Special Master's Program

Let's look at a couple of real-life examples of students for whom a special master's program is an ideal route.

One student completed college with subpar grades. He finished his medical school prerequisites, but his overall GPA was a 3.4. In his case, if he performs well in a special master's program, he can show medical schools his true academic capabilities as he completes courses alongside current medical students.

Another student finished a biology major but took 10 years off from school and ran a business . She has her prerequisites completed but lacks research and medical-related activities. A special master's program is ideal for her because she can provide admissions committees with a more recent GPA and also has the opportunity to bolster her extracurricular activities through the program.

Ultimately, enrolling in a special master's program can greatly enhance your application to medical school. If you're struggling to gain acceptance to med school or want to strengthen your academic record before applying, a special master's program may be the next best step for you.
