Swami Vivekananda and His 1893 Speech

Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902) is best known in the United States for his groundbreaking speech to the 1893 World’s Parliament of Religions in which he introduced Hinduism to America and called for religious tolerance and an end to fanaticism. Born Narendranath Dutta, he was the chief disciple of the 19th-century mystic Ramakrishna and the founder of Ramakrishna Mission. Swami Vivekananda is also considered a key figure in the introduction of Vedanta and Yoga to the West and is credited with raising the profile of Hinduism to that of a world religion.

Speech delivered by Swami Vivekananda on September 11, 1893, at the first World’s Parliament of Religions on the site of the present-day Art Institute

Sisters and Brothers of America,

It fills my heart with joy unspeakable to rise in response to the warm and cordial welcome which you have given us. I thank you in the name of the most ancient order of monks in the world, I thank you in the name of the mother of religions, and I thank you in the name of millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects.

My thanks, also, to some of the speakers on this platform who, referring to the delegates from the Orient, have told you that these men from far-off nations may well claim the honor of bearing to different lands the idea of toleration. I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth. I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites, who came to Southern India and took refuge with us in the very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation. I will quote to you, brethren, a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my earliest boyhood, which is every day repeated by millions of human beings: “As the different streams having their sources in different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee.”

The present convention, which is one of the most august assemblies ever held, is in itself a vindication, a declaration to the world of the wonderful doctrine preached in the Gita: “Whosoever comes to Me, through whatsoever form, I reach him; all men are struggling through paths which in the end lead to me.” Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time is come; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honor of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.

Introduction

Swami Vivekananda is one of the greatest Hindu monks that India has ever seen. He is not only a spiritual leader that India always boasts of but also a great freedom fighter which one can understand only if they know and study him deeply. Till today not only we Indians but the whole world respects and follows his principles. It is one of our greatest responsibilities that we make our next generation and henceforth all subsequent generations aware of this great personality. His teachings, his contribution to India and the world. He made an everlasting impact on world culture and religion through his groundbreaking speech. His preachings invoked the virtues of humanity and sympathy to the people generation wise. Vedantu has taken a noble task to make the students of this generation to know more about him through their long and short speeches on Swami Vivekananda specially suited for the elementary class level students.  They have also provided a 10 line speech on Swami Vivekananda below that younger students can find to be very useful.

Long Speech on Swami Vivekananda

A hearty welcome to everyone. As I stand here today, I would like to present a speech on  Swami Vivekananda, a renowned philosopher, scholar and writer. In this speech on Swami Vivekananda, we will talk about his life, preachings and contributions to Indian society.

Swami Vivekananda was born in Naren, in Calcutta to the Datta family on 12th January 1863. Since his early childhood, the life of Swami Vivekananda was greatly influenced by his mother and she played a significant role in shaping his life. He completed his graduation from the University of Calcutta. After completing his graduation, he then went on to pursue law and practised as an attorney in the High Court of Calcutta.

Swami Vivekananda became a devout principle of Sri Ramakrishna. Swami Vivekananda would often approach his guru with doubts and the latter would alleviate them. Sri Ramakrishna is also said to have encouraged Swami to become a sage and prophet. Known for his inquisitive nature, Swami Vivekananda often questioned different philosophies. He would often question monks if they had actually seen God. While he had a deep adoration for Science, he was deeply determined to discover the truth about God. The explanation that God was omnipotent and thus, cannot be seen could not convince Swami Vivekananda. As such, his guru Sri Ramakrishna imparted the teaching that later became symbolic of Swami’s life - experiencing God by means of serving humanity. He also penned down four classics - the Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Raja Yoga and Bhakti Yoga, considered outstanding treatises describing the Hindu philosophy.

No speech on Swami Vivekananda is complete without mentioning his immense contribution towards Indian society. Swam was a patriot, one who preached about the national consciousness lying dormant in each Indian’s mankind. He strongly advocated the teaching that providing service to humanity is the most sincere form of worship and allows one to visually manifest the existence of God. Swami Vivekananda preached these principles - divinity of the soul, harmony among religions, oneness of existence and the non-dual nature of God.

Swami Vivekananda devoted his life towards the upliftment of society. The Ramakrishna Mission, named after his guru, was organised and established by Swami Vivekananda on 1st May 1987. It is, to date, considered the most outstanding religious organisation. The sole mission of this organisation is to provide voluntary work to the poor and those in need.

Swami Vivekananda was the first Indian to ever have visited America. He briefly addressed the Parliament of Chicago in 1893, only guided by the American Providence. He was named the ‘Paragon of Vedantists’ by the Harvard philosopher William James. His contemporaries, Max Muller and  Paul Deussen, who were 19th century Orientalists held him in high esteem. Swami Vivekananda breathed his last on 4th July 1902.

I would like to conclude by saying that Swami Vivekanda led an inspiring life. His entire life was devoted to public services, serving humanity and upliftment of society. We should try to inculcate his teachings in our lives and try to be better human beings and citizens.

Short Speech on Swami Vivekananda

A very welcome to all of you. Today on this auspicious occasion, I would like to share a short speech on Swami Vivekananda.

Swami Vivekananda was known for his inspiring personality. A great soul and human being, he is responsible for awakening 19th century India to new beginnings. Born Naren, on the 12th January 1863, among the nine children of the Datta family. Swami Vivekananda was born into a family of reputed scholars. While his father was an attorney at the Calcutta High Court, his grandfather was a Persian and Sanskrit scholar.

Following the footsteps of his father, Swami Vivekananda pursued law after completing his graduation. He even practised as an attorney with the Calcutta High Court. However, Swami Vivekanda was also greatly influenced by his other religious temperament from his early childhood and this is what motivated him to seek spirituality. Swami Vivekananda educated himself thoroughly on Indian philosophy and religion.

As a principle of Sri Ramakrishna, he upheld the principle of serving God by serving humanity. He also preached the same and his teachings had profound implications on the society and traditions of India. The teachings of Swami Vivekananda were mainly inspired by the Vedas and the Upanishads, which were believed to be a great source of strength, energy and wisdom to Indian society.

Swami Vivekananda is also known to have organised and established a mission after his guru Sri Ramakrishna. Known as the Sri Ramakrishna Mission, this group includes saints and preachers who voluntarily work towards helping the poor and the needy.

We should all take inspiration from the extraordinary life led by Swami Vivekanda and do our part in contributing towards the betterment of mankind.

Swami Vivekananda was a Hindu monk from India known for introducing many in the U.S. and Europe to Hinduism in the 1890s. His speeches at the World Parliament of Religions of 1893 offer an overview of his faith and a call for unity between the world's major religions.

Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda (Jan. 12, 1863, to July 4, 1902) was born Narendranath Datta in Calcutta. His family was well to do by Indian colonial standards, and he received a traditional British-style education. There is little to suggest Datta was especially religious as a child or teen, but after his father died in 1884 Datta sought spiritual counsel from Ramakrishna, a noted Hindu teacher.

Datta's devotion to Ramakrishna grew, and he became a spiritual mentor to the young man. In 1886, Datta made formal vows as a Hindu monk, taking the new name of Swami Vivekananda. Two years later, he left monastic life for one as a wandering monk and he traveled widely until 1893. During these years, he witnessed how India's underprivileged masses lived in abject poverty. Vivekananda came to believe it was his mission in life to uplift the poor through spiritual and practical education.

The World Parliament of Religions

The World Parliament of Religions was a gathering of more than 5,000 religious officials, scholars, and historians representing the major world faiths. It was held Sept. 11 to 27, 1893, as part of the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The gathering is considered to be the first global interfaith event in modern history.

Excerpts From the Welcome Address

Swami Vivekananda delivered opening remarks to the parliament on Sept. 11, officially calling the gathering to order. He got as far as his opening, "Sisters and Brothers of America," before being interrupted by a standing ovation that lasted more than a minute.

In his address, Vivekananda quotes from the Bhagavad Gita and describes Hinduism's messages of faith and tolerance. He called on the world's faithful to fight against "sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism."

"They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time is come..."

Two weeks later at the close of the World Parliament of Religions, Swami Vivekananda spoke again. In his remarks, he praised participants and called for unity among the faithful. If people of different religions could gather at a conference, he said, then they could co-exist throughout the world.

Concluding Address: Chicago, Sept 27, 1893

The World's Parliament of Religions has become an accomplished fact, and the merciful Father has helped those who labored to bring it into existence and crowned with success their most unselfish labor.
My thanks to those noble souls whose large hearts and love of truth first dreamed this wonderful dream and then realized it. My thanks to the shower of liberal sentiments that has overflowed this platform. My thanks to this enlightened audience for their uniform kindness to me and for their appreciation of every thought that tends to smooth the friction of religions. A few jarring notes were heard from time to time in this harmony. My special thanks to them, for they have, by their striking contrast, made general harmony the sweeter.
Much has been said of the common ground of religious unity. I am not going just now to venture my own theory. But if anyone here hopes that this unity will come by the triumph of any one of the religions and the destruction of the others, to him I say, "Brother, yours is an impossible hope." Do I wish that the Christian would become Hindu? God forbid. Do I wish that the Hindu or Buddhist would become Christian? God forbid.
The seed is put in the ground, and earth and air and water are placed around it. Does the seed become the earth, or the air, or the water? No. It becomes a plant. It develops after the law of its own growth, assimilates the air, the earth, and the water, converts them into plant substance, and grows into a plant.
Similar is the case with religion. The Christian is not to become a Hindu or a Buddhist, nor a Hindu or a Buddhist to become a Christian. But each must assimilate the spirit of the others and yet preserve his individuality and grow according to his own law of growth.
If the Parliament of Religions has shown anything to the world, it is this: It has proved to the world that holiness, purity, and charity are not the exclusive possessions of any church in the world and that every system has produced men and women of the most exalted character. In the face of this evidence, if anybody dreams of the exclusive survival of his own religion and the destruction of the others, I pity him from the bottom of my heart, and point out to him that upon the banner of every religion will soon be written in spite of resistance: "Help and not fight," "Assimilation and not Destruction," "Harmony and Peace and not Dissension."

After the Conference

The World Parliament of Religions was considered a side event at the Chicago World's Fair, one of the dozens that took place during the exposition. Swami Vivekananda's speeches were a highlight of the original World Parliament of Religions and he spent the next two years on a speaking tour of the U.S. and Great Britain. Returning to India in 1897, he founded Ramakrishna Mission, a Hindu charitable organization that still exists. He returned to the U.S. and U.K. again in 1899 and 1900, then returned to India where he died two years later.

On the 100th anniversary of the gathering, another interfaith gathering took place Aug. 28 to Sept. 5, 1993, in Chicago. The Parliament of the World's Religions brought 150 spiritual and religious leaders together for dialogue and cultural exchanges.

Speech on Swami Vivekananda

Below, we have provided Swami Vivekananda’s speech in English, which is suitable for classes 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.

Good morning to one & all present here. Today, I would like to present a speech on Swami Vivekananda.

Swami Vivekananda was a scholar, writer & a great philosopher. He was an extraordinary personality with spiritual thoughts. His human sympathy, immense knowledge & diverse character made him adorable in all over the world.

Swami Vivekanand was born on 12th January 1863 in Kolkata. His original name was Narendranath. His father’s name was Vishwanath Dutta & he was a successful lawyer in the supreme court of Kolkata. His mother mainly influenced him as she played an essential role in shaping his character.

She was his first teacher who introduced him to English & Bengali alphabets. His whole family was spiritually inclined, which significantly impacted his upbringing.

Narendranath did his schooling at an institute founded by Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar in 1870, in which bodybuilding was also focused except studies. He had a deep patriotic feeling for his motherland & mother language.

He even denied learning English in school but continued because it was a compulsion. He stood first in his matriculation & joined Presidency College for his master’s in Philosophy.

He got to know about Shri Ramakrishna Paramahansa from one of his relatives. One day, he met him in his neighborhood & Shri Ramakrishna was also attracted to the singing talent of Naren. Initially, for a few days, Shri Ramakrishna did not allow Naren to leave his side & kept giving him advice & knowledge.

The two of them used to have a great discussion alone. Naren was always eager to meet God & his guru made him realize that we can also see God by serving humanity.

He became the most dedicated discipline of the saint. Shri Ramakrishna initiated Narendranath on the path of Sanyas & gave him the name Swami Vivekananda. Swami Vivekananda, along with his other disciplines, established the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897 after the death of Shri Ramakrishna Paramahansa.

It began its activities in Varahnagar near Kolkata. This mission worked for the help of needy & poor people. Swami Vivekananda also visited America to participate in the Parliament of World Religion in 1893.

He explained to the world that God is a big sea & all religions are live rivers ultimately merging into the sea. He was greatly appreciated for his thoughts & many people joined Ramakrishna Mission. Swamiji left a significant impact on Indian socio-cultural tradition.

His teachings were based on the Vedas & Upanishads. He was also a great follower of Vedanta. He was a great source of energy & motivation. He had an in-depth knowledge of Indian religion & philosophy. He believed that we could only serve God by serving humanity around us.

He believed that education is the key to a better society & is vital for the nation’s flourishing. For him, every single soul was divine & the sole aim should be to channel this divinity within by controlling external & internal nature. He died on 4th July 1902. Swami Vivekananda was an inspiration not only in India but also in the whole world.

He is a source of knowledge for all of us. His letters will always be written in golden words. We all must try to inculcate his knowledge in our life. We also must try to become a better person day by day. We all must understand that serving humanity is serving God.

Long and Short Speech on Swami Vivekananda

Swami vivekananda speech – 1.

Dear Friends – Warm Greeting to all of you!

Thank you for gathering today in the speech giving ceremony. I, Ayushman Khanna – your host, have prepared a speech on the life of Swami Vivekananda. Hope you all will enjoy listening to me as much as I will in speaking about this great personality. Those who already know about him can also give their contributions to my speech and share valuable information, but those who don’t know much about him will be able to gain a good insight about his life and pursuits.

Swami Vivekananda, ladies and gentlemen, was born on January 12 in the year 1863 and died in the year 1902. He was a great follower of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa. At the time of his birth, he was christened as Narendranath Datta and laid down the foundation of Ramakrishna Mission. He was the one behind bringing Hindu philosophies, such as Vedanta and Yoga, to the forefront of America and Europe. He worked towards according Hinduism a status of world religion towards the end of the 19 th century. He is considered a principal force in the rebirth of Hinduism in contemporary India. He is possibly best considered for his inspirational speech on “Sisters and Brothers of America”. It is only after this that he was able to introduce Hinduism at the Parliament of the World’s Religions at Chicago in the year 1893.

I am sure that you would be curious in knowing about his childhood too. Well, he was born in Calcutta at Shimla Pally. Initially, his name was Narendranath Datta. He hailed from a humble background where his father was an attorney in the high court of Calcutta. His mother’s name was Bhuvaneshwari Devi. When Narendranath grew up, he imbibed the traits of both his father and mother. From his father he imbibed rational thinking and from his mother, it was religious temperament and greatly the power of self-control.

At the time when he was young, Narendra became an expert in meditation and could enter into a Samadhi state quite easily. Once he observed a light after falling asleep. He also saw a vision of Buddha when he meditated. Right from his early days, he had a keen interest in the wandering monks and ascetics. He also loved playing games and doing mischief.

However, he also displayed great leadership qualities. The name of his childhood companion was Kamal Reddy. When he was young, he came in touch with Brahmo Samaj and eventually met Sri Ramakrishna. It was Sri Ramakrishna who took charge of him and after his death; it was Narendranath who left his house. He changed his name to ogivami Vivekananda and started living in Boranagar Monastery along with his other disciple friends. Later on, he began his tour across India and wandered from one place to the other till the time he reached Trivandum and finally at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago. There, he addressed a speech and brought worldwide acclaim to Hinduism.

He was a great soul who worked for the upliftment of mankind and nation at large.

Swami Vivekananda Speech – 2

Good Morning Students – How you all are doing?

Hope everyone is enjoying the classes on spirituality and meditation as much as the teachers are enjoying in delivering it. Besides giving you practical classes on meditation, it is also important to share with you information about the great spiritual guru called Swami Vivekananda.

Born in Calcutta in the Datta family, Swami Vivekananda adopted the agnostic philosophy, which prevailed in the West along with the development on Science. At the same time, there was a strong urge in him to unravel the mystery around God and he also raised doubts about the holy reputation of certain people asking them if anyone has ever seen or talked to God.

While he was struggling with this dilemma, he happened to come across Sri Ramakrishna, who later on became his guru and helped him in finding answers to his questions, endowed him with the vision of God and transformed him into a prophet or what you may call a sage with the power to teach. Swami Vivekananda’s personality was so inspiring that he became a well-known figure not in India, but abroad, namely America during the end of the 19 th century and the first decade of the 20 th century.

Who had known that this personality would rise to fame in such a short span of time? This anonymous monk from India grew to fame at the Parliament of Religion organized in Chicago in the year 1893. There he stood for Hinduism and articulated his thoughts on both eastern and western culture, including his deep understanding of spirituality. His well-articulated thoughts, sympathy for the mankind and multi-faceted personality left an irresistible charm on Americans who got the opportunity to hear him speak. People who saw or even heard him continued to applaud him till the time they lived.

He went to America with a mission to spread knowledge about our great Indian spiritual culture, particularly from the Vedantic source. He also tried to feed the religious consciousness of the people there with the help of humanistic and rational teachings from the Vedanta philosophy. In America, he represented India as its spiritual ambassador and earnestly asked people to develop mutual understanding between India and the West in order that the two worlds can come together forming a union of both religion and science.

On our motherland, Swami Vivekananda, is looked up as a great saint of contemporary India and as someone who rekindled national consciousness that lay dormant. He taught Hindus to believe in a religion which gives strength to people and unites them. Service to mankind is seen as an evident manifestation of Godhead and is a special form of prayer he asked Indian people to adopt instead of rituals and believing in age-old myths. In fact, various Indian political leaders have openly accepted their indebtedness to Swami Vivekananda.

In the end, I would just say that he was a great lover of mankind and his life experiences always inspired people and renewed the desire to attain a higher sense of being.

Respected Principal, Vice Principal, Teachers and My Dear Fellow Students – Good Morning to one and all!

I, Sakshi Mittal from standard – IX (C), am going to deliver a speech on Swami Vivekananda on the occasion of World Spirituality Day. Not many of us know much about Swami Vivekananda, who has been a great spiritual legend born in India. Even though he was an Indian by birth, his mission of life was not restricted to just national boundaries, but went far beyond that. He dedicated his life for the service of mankind which of course transcended national borders. He strove in his entire life to spread human brotherhood and peace on the spiritual groundwork of the Vedantic Union of existence. A sage from the highest order, Swami Vivekananda possessed an unmediated as well as intuitive experience of the actual, physical world. He used to receive his ideas from that unparalleled source of wisdom and time and again showcased them in the stunning garb of poetry.

It was the natural tendency of Shri Vivekananda and his disciples to rise above this world and immerse in the meditation of the absolute. However, having said that we cannot deny that there was another part to his personality which empathized with people from across the world after seeing their suffering and miserable condition. It may be perhaps that his mind was never at rest and remained in the state of oscillation between the meditation of God and service to the entire human race. In whatever way it was, his great obedience to the higher authority and service to mankind made him an endearing personality not only for the natives, but Americans in particular.

Besides, he was a part of one of the brilliant religious institutions of contemporary India and founded the Ramakrishna Order of Monks. It is dedicated to the proliferation of the Hindu spiritual values not only in India, but abroad as well, namely America. He once addressed himself as ‘condensed India’.

His teachings and life carry an inestimable value for the West because it provides them with a window to study the Asian mind. The philosopher from Harvard, i.e. William James addressed Swami Vivekananda as the “ paragon of Vedantists ”. Paul Deussen and Max Muller, the celebrated Orientalists from the 19 th century, held him with great esteem and a sense of regard. According to Remain Rolland, “his words” are no less than the great lyrical composition, like you have Beethoven music or like the rousing rhythms of Handel choruses.

Thus, I would urge everyone to resuscitate the writings of Swami Vivekananda and pay tribute to him. His works are like precious gems lying ignored in the library, so bring them up and add luster to an otherwise dull life of yours by drawing inspiration from his works and life.

I would now request my fellow students to come on stage and share their thoughts on the same as it will of a great value to us.

Swami Vivekananda Speech – 4

Good Evening Ladies and Gentleman – I warmly welcome you all to the speech ceremony of today!

I, Abhimanyu Kashyap, your host for today would like to deliver a speech on the great spiritual leader of India, i.e. Swami Vivekananda. He is, needless to mention, the world’s famous sage. Born in the city of Calcutta in the year 1863, January 12, Swami Vivekananda in his early years was called as Narendranath Dutta. His father’s name was Viswanath Dutta, who was an educated lawyer in Calcutta’s High Court. Narendranath did not receive education on a regular basis, but rather erratically. However, he began his education with a Primary School with his other friends in the suburban region.

It was out of the fear of bad company of the rough children that Narendranath was not allowed to attend higher secondary school. But he was again sent to the Metropolitan Institution, the foundation of which was laid down by Iswara Chandra Vidyasagar. He had various shades to his personality, i.e. not only was he a fine actor, but a great scholar, wrestler and player. He commanded great knowledge in the Sanskrit Subject. Most importantly, he was a pursuer of truth and never did he tell a lie.

We all know that on our motherland great social reformers as well as freedom fighters took birth. They dedicated their whole lives for the service of mankind and Swami Vivekananda has been one of those true gems which India possessed.

He laid down his whole life for the service of the nation and helped people to grow from their miserable existence. Other than doing philanthropic acts, he lived his life reading books from Science, Religion, History Philosophy, Art, Social Science, etc. Also, he greatly admired Hindu Literature like Mahabharata, Ramayana, Bhagavad-Gita, Upanishads and Vedas, which helped in shaping his thinking to a great extent. He received training in Indian classical music. He passed the examination of Fine Arts and received a degree in Bachelor of Arts in the year 1884.

He always quoted Veda and Upanishads and imparted spiritual training to people which prevented India from plunging into a state of crisis or chaos. The crux of this message is “Truth is one: Sages call it by various names”.

The four main points of this axiom are:

  • Soul’s Divinity
  • Non-duality of the almighty God
  • A sense of oneness in religions
  • Unity in existence

The words that he wrote last time to his followers were:

“It may be that I shall find it good to get outside my body, to cast it off like a worn-out garment. But I shall not cease to work. I shall inspire men everywhere until the whole world shall know that it is one with God.”

He lived for a short span of 39 years and amidst all his challenging physical conditions, he left for posterity his four volumes of classics, i.e. Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Raja Yoga and Karma Yoga – all these are brilliant treatises on Hindu philosophy. And with this I would like to end my speech.

Swami Vivekananda was born on 12th January, 1863 in Calcutta. The people of India celebrate 12 January as National Youth Day to commemorate the birth of Swami Vivekananda. He was born into an upper-middle-class aristocratic family of the Kayastha caste in Bengal. Vishwanath Dutta, an attorney at the Calcutta High Court, was his father and his mother, Bhubaneswari Devi, was a pious lady. The personality and thoughts of Swami Vivekananda were highly influenced by the sensible attitude of his father and the religious disposition of his mother.

From a young age itself, Narendra was interested in spirituality. He was a prolific reader with philosophy, religion, social science, history, art, and literature as his favourite subjects. He also exhibited a strong enthusiasm for religious scriptures, including the Puranas, the Vedas, the Upanishads, and so on. He spent his leisure time engaging in meditation and spiritual readings.

We can experience God by serving humanity is one of the greatest pieces of wisdom shared by his guru. His focus on the theme of Vedas and Upanishads brought a great impact on the socio-cultural traditions of our nation. Through his teachings, he tried to avoid hatred among the people by spreading the idea of the eternal truth of one God. According to him, a man himself is the architect of his destiny, and he wanted people to believe in themselves.

Swami Vivekananda is one of India’s most acclaimed orators, saints, and philosophers. He is the founder of Ramakrishna Mission, a spiritual society established on May 1, 1897 in Calcutta. It presents a modern version of Advaita Vedanta, which is a school of Indian philosophy in western countries. Vivekananda launched the society with a dual purpose. One was to spread the message of Vedanta, and the other was to improve the social living conditions of the Indian people. Swami Vivekananda was a revolutionary who yearned to bring changes to society. In his early life, he was an active member of the Brahmo Samaj, a religious movement founded by Ram Mohan Roy in 1828. He participated in many social movements and fought to eliminate the convention of early marriage from society. He promoted education and wanted everyone to be literate irrespective of any social or cultural denominations.

Swami Vivekananda later became the most remarkable disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and stood for the unity of all religions. On the basis of the revelation attained by Sri Ramakrishna, he openly revealed to the world that all religions are on the path to the same goal. According to the words of Swami Vivekananda, “As different streams having different sources all mingle their waters in the sea, so different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to God.”

The early education of Narendranath was at the Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar’s Metropolitan Institution, and he passed the Fine Arts examination in 1881. Narendranath was a genius and was the only student to receive first-division marks in the entrance examination conducted by the Presidency College. He had a vast knowledge of Western logic, European history, Western philosophy, Sanskrit scriptures, Bengali literature, and Indian Classical music.

From 1881 to 1884, Narendrnath served as an active member of the religious movement led by Keshab Chandra Sen. The movement was titled ‘Nava Vidhan’ and conducted social activities like ‘Band of Hope’ to discourage young people from actively participating in smoking and drinking. The sudden death of Narendranath’s father in 1884 made him one of the poorest students in his college. The financial condition of the family was badly affected, and as a result, Narendranath decided to drop his studies in law. After discontinuing his studies, he visited Ramakrishna and requested to admit him as his student. The acumen of Narendrnath was praised, and over the years, he became the most notable disciple of Ramakrishna.

Later in 1886, after the death of guru Ramakrishna, Narendranath and other eight disciples took monastic vows. According to the vows, they decided to live their life as their guru did. Narendranath took the name of ‘Swami Vivekananda’ and started travelling the world. Speeches and lectures that he conducted all over Europe made him attain popularity and established him as one of the best orators of the time. From 1888 to 1893, he travelled all across India, and he started his journey to the west on 31 May 1893. In the same year, he presented his world-famous speech at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago. He started his brief speech representing India by addressing the audience as “Sisters and brothers of America”.

After returning from Europe, on 1st May, 1897, Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Mission in Calcutta for social service. For him, every single soul on this planet is divine. And as a result, he actively engaged in serving people. The spiritual journey of Swami Vivekananda ended on July 4, 1902.

  • “You cannot believe in God until you believe in yourself.”
  • “The greatest religion is to be true to your own nature. Have faith in yourselves.”
  • “The moment I have realised God sitting in the temple of every human body, the moment I stand in reverence before every human being and see God in him – that moment I am free from bondage, everything that binds vanishes, and I am free.”
  • “All the powers in the universe are already ours. It is we who have put our hands before our eyes and cry that it is dark.”
  • “Arise! Awake! and stop not until the goal is reached.”
  • “In a day, when you don’t come across any problems – you can be sure that you are travelling in a wrong path.”
  • “God is to be worshipped as the one beloved, dearer than everything in this and next life.”
  • “Talk to yourself once in a day; otherwise, you may miss meeting an intelligent person in this world.”
  • “Truth can be stated in a thousand different ways, yet each one can be true.”
  • “The great secret of true success, of true happiness, is this: the man or woman who asks for no return, the perfectly unselfish person, is the most successful.”

Young Naren studied in the Metropolitan Institution at Calcutta and after passing the examination. He graduated from an English college in Calcutta and passed his B.A. examination, and further visited to study law. But after his father’s death, his family’s financial position did not allow him to prosecute further study.

He was an excellent singer. One day Ramakrishna Paramahamsa happened to hear him singing a devotional song. He asked the young man to see him at the Kali temple. Naren was very keen to see God face to face. He asked many religious saints about his desire, but none could satisfy him.

Ramakrishna Paramahamsa said to Naren that as one can see him, he can also see god in the same form. However, Naren was not convinced by his words. He wanted the saint to demonstrate it to him. As time passed, Naren had that wonderful heavenly experience in his life. He became the most dedicated disciple of the saint. His Guru taught him the most important lesson of his life ie We can experience God by serving humanity.

Ramakrishna Mission

With his teaching, Naren later established the Ramakrishna Mission on 1st May 1897 which is also working at a present-day engaged in offering voluntary welfare work for the poor and the needy people. After becoming a monk Naren was named Swami Vivekananda. He visited America to participate in the parliament of world religions held in Chicago in 1893.

In his deep lecture, Swami Vivekananda explained to the world that God is the one big sea, and all religions are like rivers ultimately merging in the sea. According to him, there should not be any dispute among the preachers of various religions that they worship God in separate forms or with different beliefs.

His belief in the eternal truth of one God can avoid hatred among the people. Swamiji’s view was lauded with great appreciation. Many people became his disciples who later joined the Ramakrishna Mission.

Swami Vivekananda’s Teachings

Swamiji’s teachings have left a great impact on Indian socio-cultural traditions. He was a great follower of Vedanta. His teachings focus on the themes of Vedas and Upanishads. He believes them to be the great sources of energy, wisdom, and strength.

Man is the builder of his own density. So each human being with his own capacity can guide himself and at the same time can play a key role in the society. All healthy social changes are the result of the spiritual forces working within ourselves.

Education provides a better standard of life to society. If the social life of the country will improve then only the nation will flourish. So Swami Vivekananda in his teachings had attached great significance to the role of education in building society.

For him, every single soul is divine. The aim is to channelize this divinity within by controlling nature’s external and internal nature. The divine soul of Swami Vivekananda left this world on4th July 1902.

My dear friends his name was written in golden letters in the history of India. He was a role model for not only the people of his country but to the whole world. We shall make efforts to inculcate his qualities and become a better person.

2-minute Speech on Swami Vivekananda

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today, I am going to talk about a person whose words and teachings have been inspiring millions across the globe. He is none other than Swami Vivekananda, a profound philosopher, an articulate orator, and a charismatic spiritual leader who dedicated his life to the upliftment of humanity.

Swami Vivekananda was born on 12th January 1863, in Kolkata, into an affluent family. His thirst for knowledge was evident from an early age. He was an avid reader and he questioned everything until he was satisfied with the answers. He went on to study western philosophy and history at the University of Calcutta. However, his mind was always engrossed in the quest for God and truth.

Vivekananda’s life took a significant turn when he met his Guru, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa. Under his guidance, he learnt that all living beings were an embodiment of the Divine Self; therefore, service to God could be rendered by service to mankind. This teaching greatly influenced Swami Vivekananda and became the cornerstone of his philosophy.

In 1893, Swami Vivekananda represented India at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago. His opening words, “Sisters and Brothers of America,” won the hearts of the audience, and he received a standing ovation. He spoke about the rich cultural heritage of India, the greatness of Hinduism, and the need for universal tolerance and acceptance. His powerful speech put India on the world map of spirituality and philosophy.

Swami Vivekananda was not just a spiritual leader; he was a visionary who dreamt of a strong and prosperous India. He stressed the importance of education, especially for women, as he believed that a country could not progress if its women were not educated. He once said, “All the wealth of the world cannot help one little Indian village if the people are not taught to help themselves.” He firmly believed that the true essence of religion was the welfare of the masses.

Swami Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission, organizations that were instrumental in propagating education and serving humanity. He propagated the philosophy of Vedanta and worked tirelessly to promote the spirit of nationalism in India. He believed in the potential of youth and urged them to “Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.”

The life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda are a beacon of light guiding us through the course of life. He taught us to see God in all beings and instilled in us the spirit of selfless service. He emphasized the unity of mankind and the universal brotherhood. His teachings continue to inspire and motivate us to strive for a better tomorrow.

In conclusion, Swami Vivekananda was not just a monk or a spiritual leader, but he was a great humanitarian who served mankind with unconditional love and dedication. His life and teachings are an epitome of selflessness, love, and compassion. He will always be remembered as a guiding star leading us towards the path of righteousness.

  • “The earth is enjoyed by heroes”— this is the unfailing truth.  Be a hero . Always say, “I have no fear”.

If what we are now has been the result of our own past actions, it certainly follows that whatever we wish to be in future can be produced by our present actions; so we have to know how to act.
  • We are what our thoughts have made us; so take care about what you think. Words are secondary. Thoughts live; they travel far.
  • We reap what we sow. We are the makers of our own fate. None else has the blame, none has the praise.
  • Whatever you think, that you will be. If you think yourselves weak, weak you will be; if you think yourselves strong, strong you will be; if you think yourselves impure, impure you will be; if you think yourselves pure, pure you will be. [Source]

On January 12, 1863, he was born and was among the Datta family's nine children. Swami Vivekananda was raised in a distinguished academic household. His grandfather was a Persian and Sanskrit scholar, and his father was a lawyer in the Calcutta High Court.

Academics And Life After

After graduating, Swami Vivekananda followed a legal career in the same direction as his father. Even at the Calcutta High Court, he practised law. But Swami Vivekanda also had a solid religious temperament that he developed in his early years, which inspired him to pursue spirituality. Swami Vivekananda immersed himself in Indian religion and philosophy.

He adhered to Sri Ramakrishna's teaching that one serves God by serving others. He shared the same message and significantly influenced Indian society and traditions through his teachings. The Vedas and the Upanishads, seen as a great source of power, vitality, and wisdom for Indian civilization, served as the primary inspiration for Swami Vivekananda's teachings.

Contributions

It is also well known that Swami Vivekananda organised and started a mission named after his Guru, Sri Ramakrishna. This organisation, also known as the Sri Ramakrishna Mission, consists of preachers and saints who devote their free time to serving the underprivileged.

Long Speech On Swami Vivekananda

On January 12, 1863, at his ancestral home in Calcutta, Swami Vivekananda was born Narendranath Datta. His father, Vishwanath Datta, worked as an attorney in the Calcutta High Court, and he was one of nine children. Bhubaneswari Devi, Swami Vivekananda's mother, was a devoted housewife. According to his mother, he was a very mischievous boy who was constantly restless.

Education And Interest

Vivekananda, also known as Narendranath, developed a keen interest in spirituality at a young age and used to practise meditation in front of statues and idols of Hindu deities. The ascetics and itinerant monks captivated young Narendranath as well.

Vivekananda enrolled in north Calcutta's Vidyasagar College. He and his family relocated to Raipur later in 1877. When he returned to Calcutta in 1879, he was the only student to pass the prestigious Presidency College's entrance exam with a first-class grade.

Vivekananda was an avid reader interested in various fields, including history, philosophy, literature, and religion. He was also interested in Hindu scriptures such as the Vedas, Upanishads, Mahabharata, Ramayana, and Bhagavad Gita.

Vivekananda, who studied Indian Classical Music, regularly engaged in athletics and other physical pursuits. Vivekananda earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the esteemed Christian College in Calcutta in 1884.

William Hastie, the principal of the Christian college, had stated that, “Vivekananda was genuinely brilliant. Despite my extensive travels, I have never encountered a young guy with talent and potential—not even in German universities among philosophy students. He'll undoubtedly leave his mark on the world.”

Founding Ramkrishna Mission

On May 1, 1897, Swami Vivekananda established the Ramkrishna Mission at Belur Math, close to Calcutta. The Ramkrishna Mission was founded on the principles of Karma yoga, focusing on helping the underprivileged and needy.

Along with providing other social services, Ramkrishna Mission also established and managed hospitals, colleges, and schools. The mission also spread Vedanta through seminars, workshops, and conferences. Additionally, it contributed to numerous relief and reconstruction projects across the nation.

Living Life Like A Monk

After Ramkrishna Paramhans passed away in 1886, his devotees refused to support Vivekananda and his other disciples. They were made to reside in a run-down building in Baranagar, North Calcutta. This structure was designated as the first Ramkrishna-order temple. In the same math, Vivekananda and fifteen other Ramkrishna disciples took their vows to become monks. They practised yoga and meditation and thrived by begging for alms or becoming "madhukari."

Swami Vivekananda was the most significant spiritual leader the world has ever known. He spread the Hindu philosophy and religion worldwide, making it known on a grand scale. Across all religions, cultures, and faiths, his words have influenced countless people. He made long, monk-like travels the length and breadth of India. His sole possessions were a water pitcher, a stick, and his two favourite books, The Imitation of Christ and The Bhagavad Gita.
