The Creative Writing Program’s Writing for Children and Young Adults Concentration Specializes in the Form and Function of Crafting Stories for Young Readers

Alumni of the Writing for Children and Young Adults program have recently racked up a number of remarkable achievements. Last week, the National Book Awards finalists were announced, and among the selections in the Young People’s literature category was King and the Dragonflies by Kacen Callender, MFA Creative Writing ‘14. Janae Marks’, MFA Creative Writing ’10, debut From the Desk of Zoe Washington has been earning stars and stellar reviews.  Soon after graduation, Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton, both MFA Creative Writing ’12, created a book development company, Cake Literary, which has led to the publication of many new voices in middle grade, teen, and women’s fiction; in addition their own book “Tiny Pretty Things” has just been turned into an hour-long drama series on Netflix. Corey Ann Haydu, MFA Creative Writing ’12, a popular YA and middle-grade author has just published the first two books of her new chapter book series, Hand-Me-Down Magic, this summer. 

General interest in the field of young adult and children’s literature has grown steadily — fueled by the success of juggernauts like the Harry Potter, Twilight, and Hunger Games franchises, along with stand-alone bestsellers like The Hate You Give , Children of Blood and Bone , and Love, Simon . But MFA writing programs at only a handful of universities, including The New School’s Creative Writing Program , offer concentrations for authors targeting this age group. “Good writing is good writing, but there are very specific craft choices that come up when writing for different ages,” says Caron Levis, faculty member and program coordinator for the Writing for Children and Young Adults concentration. “Everything has its own format or issues you have to be aware of, from picture books, which have a very specific form, to writing for teens, which is an ever-shifting area in terms of content and craft, so being in a program where you are in a workshop full of people immersed in the same world you are is invaluable.” 

Although a program focused solely on writing for young readers may sound highly specific, there is incredible variety within the concentration. “Because the concentration covers a wide range of topics and age groups, I’ve loved learning more about writing for the different age groups within the larger Children and Young Adults category,” says, Isabella Hendricks, MFA Creative Writing ’21. “We have picture book, middle grade, and YA writers in the cohort, and I think that studying all of these categories strengthens your writing, regardless of which age group, or groups, you’re primarily writing for. It’s also great to have a group that is not just passionate about writing for young people but is also avidly reading what’s out there. Everyone is well-versed in children’s and young adult lit and, as a result, is critiquing each other’s work from a perspective informed by the genre.” 

With only ten to 15 students selected every year for the program, each cohort is able to develop and create a strong community that supports them through their time at the university and beyond. “Our faculty of authors and editors, who are highly active in the field, bring their knowledge and experience to the program; in addition, as our students go into publishing world, they discover that their community of fellow writers, is just as essential to their writing and careers,” says Levis.  

This access to a writing community was a strong draw for Eleanor Owens, MFA Creative Writing ’21. “I believe one of the most important things I possibly could have gotten out of The New School’s MFA program is the group of like-minded writers who have critiqued me, recommended incredible books, pushed me to grow, and changed me in ways I’m sure I’m still not aware of,” says Owens. “When I applied to MFA programs, the only ones I applied to were in-residency for this exact reason. I ended up choosing The New School because it offered me a significant scholarship, has an incredible reputation, and is based in New York City, so it was hard to beat its access to book events and author interviews.”

The program has also been successful in attracting authors interested in expanding the diversity and inclusiveness of children’s books. “What has been historically lacking in the field of children’s literature is greater and authentic diversity, inclusion, and representation of all children and their experiences,” says Levis. “There have always been amazing books, but there haven’t always been books everyone can see themselves in them. A lot of our alumni are contributing to shifting that whether that’s through their own writing, as editors, or being an active part of the We Need Diverse Books movement; many people come to the program with a specific interest in writing books for communities of readers that have been under or incorrectly represented.”

For Levis, who is also a social worker, the children’s book community’s willingness and desire to address social issues like Black Lives Matter and #MeToo are crucial to their work. “Children’s writers often consider how stories can support children and young adults navigate their worlds,” she says. “That can happen through a super silly book or one that tackles tough and fierce themes.  For young people, reading the right book at the right time can have significant impact on their lives. Writers in this program understand that, and that’s what brings them here.”

Creative Writing (MFA)

Program description.

The MFA Program in Creative Writing consists of a vibrant community of writers working together in a setting that is both challenging and supportive. This stimulating environment fosters the development of talented writers of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. The program is not defined by courses alone, but by a life built around writing.

Through innovative literary outreach programs, a distinguished public reading series, an exciting public student reading series, special literary seminars with visiting writers, and the production of a high-quality literary journal, students participate in a dynamic literary community actively engaged in all aspects of the literary arts—writing, reading, teaching, publishing and community outreach. Students also have the opportunity to enjoy America's most literary terrain; New York University is situated in the heart of Greenwich Village, a part of the city that has always been home to writers.

The MFA in Creative Writing is designed to offer students an opportunity to concentrate intensively on their writing. This program is recommended for students who may want to apply for creative writing positions at colleges and universities, which often require the MFA degree. The MFA program does not have a foreign language requirement.

All applicants to the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) are required to submit the  general application requirements , which include:

Program Requirements

Additional Program Requirements

A creative special project in poetry or fiction, consisting of a substantial piece of writing—a novella, a collection of short stories, or a group of poems—to be submitted in the student’s final semester. The project requires the approval of the student’s faculty adviser and of the director of the CWP.

The MFA degree may also be earned through the Low Residency MFA Writers Workshop in Paris. Under this model, degree requirements remain the same, although Craft courses and Workshops take the form of intensive individualized courses of study with the faculty, including three substantial packet exchanges of student work per semester. All students earning the MFA degree through the low-residency program must also participate in five ten-day residencies in Paris, which involve a diverse series of series of craft talks, lectures, readings, special events, faculty mentorship meetings, and professional development panels.

Learning outcomes.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

• Graduate students in the Creative Writing Program at NYU work intensively with faculty mentors in writing workshops and individual conferences to learn and master the basic elements of the craft of fiction, creative nonfiction, or poetry.
• Students are expected to read widely and deeply, and to acquire a broad practitioner’s knowledge of English and American literature in their declared concentration (poetry, creative nonfiction, or fiction).
• Students are taught to read carefully and critically, and in doing so learn to read as writers. By studying great novels, poems, and works of literary nonfiction by other writers, students learn how to write their own.
• The two-year program of intensive study culminates in the completion of a creative thesis -- a novel, a collection of stories or essays, or a collection of poems. The thesis manuscript, ideally, is a working draft of a first book. Many program alumni go on to publish books and win awards for their writing.

Grading and GPA Policy

To qualify for the degree, a student must have a GPA of at least 3.0, must complete a minimum of 24 points with a grade of B or better, and may offer no more than 8 points with a grade of C (no more than 4 points with a grade of C in creative writing workshops). A student may take no more than 36 points toward the degree.

UMass Boston's Creative Writing MFA offers you an intense, 3-year program and focused opportunity to further your commitment to writing as the center of your professional life. Through a combination of mentoring by accomplished faculty in a series of creative writing workshops, courses focused on the study of literature offered through the English MA Program, and electives that include the practice of literary editing, the teaching of creative writing, documentary poetics, the art of memoir, and more—you will have the guidance to develop and shape your work to the full extent of your talent.

All accepted students receive funding. How to apply.

Applicants must meet general graduate admission requirements in addition to the following program-specific requirements:

• A 3.0 GPA overall and in the student’s major
• Three substantive and detailed letters of recommendation, from former teachers familiar with the applicant’s most recent academic and creative work
• A 3-5 page personal statement focusing on the role of the candidate’s reading life in his or her development as a writer. (Note: The general Graduate Admissions application refers to this as a statement of interests and intent. They are one and the same.)
• Applicants must indicate whether they are applying in FICTION or POETRY in their Statement of Purpose. If you want to apply in both genres, include one writing sample in FICTION and one in POETRY and indicate in the Statement of Purpose that the application is for both.
• A writing sample of 10 manuscript pages of poetry or 20 manuscript pages of fiction

Deadlines: January 15 (priority) for fall. While rare, if space is available, we’ll happily consider applications until June 1 (final deadline).

Application Fee: The nonrefundable application fee is $75. UMass Boston alumni and current students that plan to complete degree requirements prior to graduate enrollment can submit the application without paying the application fee.

Graduation Criteria

Complete 48 credits from twelve courses including four writing workshops, three literature courses, three electives, and two semesters of thesis workshops.

The MFA degree requires six semesters of full-time study, with 9 credits required in each of the first four semesters, and 6 credits in the final two semesters, during which students will concentrate on completing a thesis in fiction or poetry under the direction of a faculty member. MFA workshops are limited to 12 students, and seminars are limited to 15. Students have the opportunity to interact with writers in our Global Voices Visiting Writer series (recent visitors have been Raquel Salas Rivera and Carole Maso), and work with visiting prose writers - recently these have included Jane Unrue, ZZ Packer, and Fanny Howe.

Capstone: Completion of an MFA thesis of 48 to 64 pages of poetry or 100 to 200 pages of fiction written under the supervision of a thesis advisor, reviewed by a thesis committee, and subject to a public defense.

Statute of limitations: Five years.

New Programs in Screenwriting and DEI Place Students on the Cutting Edge

Mount Saint Mary’s is continuously finding new ways to prepare students for success and meet the changing demands of a global workforce. One way the Mount does this is by creating transformative and unparalleled educational programs that offer students theoretical and practical knowledge. The Mount is excited to offer various new degree and certificate programs for the upcoming academic year. Two notable programs that will launch in the summer and fall of 2024 are an MFA in Screenwriting and a certificate in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI).

New MFA in Screenwriting

Los Angeles is the ideal place to study and prepare for a career writing for the entertainment industry, and Mount Saint Mary’s is expanding opportunities for aspiring writers with a new MFA in Screenwriting. 

A joint endeavor between the creative writing and film departments, the three-year-long MFA program aims to produce writers who are prepared to write for not only TV and film but also new and interactive media, such as virtual reality and video games.  

“Versatility is the watchword for the program,” says Johnny Payne, director of the MFA in Creative Writing and co-creator of the MFA in Screenwriting program. “Students will also study, write and adapt other literary works, such as novels, short stories and plays, to screenplays. This is one way there is a true synergy between the creative writing and film programs.”

Another unique characteristic of the Mount’s screenwriting program is its production training. Students will learn about all techniques of editing, directing and cinematography, with the program culminating in the students producing a portion of their screenplay for a proof of concept.

“It is more than just theoretical knowledge — it is the practical application within the different media that sets this program apart from other screenwriting programs,” says Kelby Thwaits, MFA, director of graduate programs in film, television and photography and co-creator of the new program. “Students will get hands-on training and understanding so they can better write for the media captured by the camera.” 

The program will also prepare students for the business aspects of the industry, from budgeting and seeking funding to understanding the ins and outs of the newer streaming-oriented media.  

While applicants must have a bachelor’s degree to be accepted, Kelby says the ideal candidate for the program is a motivated storyteller. “They can come from liberal arts, science or math majors, as long as they have that core drive to tell their story,” he says.  

Johnny adds that the program will have a nurturing and supportive atmosphere, perfect for aspiring writers to achieve their goals. “We are going to develop raw talent,” says Johnny. “We will teach them the fundamentals and work with them to shine.”

New DEI certificate 

The importance of DEI initiatives continues to grow in all industries and job sectors, from healthcare to government to finance. To help meet the demand for more working professionals with thorough DEI knowledge, the Mount will launch a new graduate-level certificate in DEI this summer. 

Designed for individuals across all industries, the program will give students the skills to create positive change at the personal, interpersonal, institutional, cultural and systemic levels.  

“This program is timely,” says Krishauna Hines-Gaither, PhD, vice president for equity, diversity and justice at the Mount. “There is demand for people with DEI knowledge in all sectors, from healthcare and education to technology and all spheres of business.” 

Certificate students will gain a solid understanding of DEI foundational topics, such as its history, implicit and explicit bias, and cultural identities, while also developing an implementation project that they can bring back to their organization. They will gain analytical skills and learn how to build community partnerships.

“The knowledge gained here at the Mount will empower these professionals to create transformational change within their specific environment,” Krishauna says. “We are proud that students will gain foundation knowledge and then have the opportunity to apply it directly. It makes this program very unique.”  

The program’s goals align with the Mount’s mission of becoming an antiracist university and helping to increase the impact of equity, diversity and justice practices in the greater community. 

The program will be offered online in an asynchronous format, allowing students to flexibly complete the courses within a set timeframe. It is open to candidates with a bachelor’s degree from any field and can be completed in one semester. The DEI certification pilot program will convene during the summer 2024 term.

An Overview of the IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to measure English proficiency for educational, vocational and immigration purposes. The IELTS measures an individual's ability to communicate in English across four areas of language: listening , reading , writing and speaking . The IELTS is administered jointly by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment at over 1,100 test centres and 140 countries. These test centres supervise the local administration of the test and recruit, train and monitor IELTS examiners.

IELTS tests are available on 48 fixed dates each year, usually Saturdays and sometimes Thursdays, and may be offered up to four times a month at any test centre, including Elektrostal' depending on local needs. Go to IELTS test locations to find a test centre in or nearby Elektrostal' and to check for upcoming test dates at your test centre.

Test results are available online 13 days after your test date. You can either receive your Test Report Form by post or collect it from the Test Centre. You will normally only receive one copy of the Test Report Form, though you may ask for a second copy if you are applying to the UK or Canada for immigration purposes - be sure to specify this when you register for IELTS. You may ask for up to 5 copies of your Test Report Form to be sent directly to other organisations, such as universities.

There are no restrictions on re-sitting the IELTS. However, you would need to allow sufficient time to complete the registration procedures again and find a suitable test date.
