The Statue of Liberty, a gift from the people of France, arrived to the U.S. in 214 crates. It was assembled and then unveiled in New York Harbor in 1886.

Get facts and photos about the 11th state.

Native Americans came to the area now called New York about 5,000 years ago. Thousands of years later, their descendants included Native American tribes such as the Mohawk, Cayuga , Oneida, and Seneca.

In 1624 the Dutch established a colony on what’s now Manhattan Island called New Amsterdam. It was renamed New York once the British took control of the area in 1664.

But after the American Revolution in 1776, New York became a U.S. colony, then a state in 1788. One year later, George Washington was sworn in as the United States ’ first president in New York City, then the country’s capital. (It would move to Washington, D.C. , the next year, in 1790.)

On September 11, 2001, hijackers flew planes into the twin towers of New York City’s World Trade Center; the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C.; and a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Learn more about the history-making attack and meet some of the heroes who helped save lives that day.

WHY’S IT CALLED THAT?

New York was named after the British Duke of York. Many experts believe it’s nicknamed the Empire State because George Washington called New York “the seat of the Empire.”

GEOGRAPHY AND LANDFORMS

New York is bordered by Canada and Lake Ontario in the north; Pennsylvania , New Jersey , and the Atlantic Ocean in the south; Lake Erie in the west; and Connecticut , Massachusetts , and Vermont in the east.

The St. Lawrence-Champlain Lowland runs along the edge of the Adirondack Mountains and the Canadian border. In this hilly area, you can see Lake Champlain and Thousand Islands, a collection of small islands that sit between New York and Canada.

The Adirondack Upland, known for the Appalachian Mountains and its forests, waterfalls, and lakes includes New York’s highest peak, Mount Marcy. The Hudson-Mohawk Lowland contains much of the Hudson and Mohawk River valleys, and the Allegheny Plateau, stretching from Lake Erie along the border with Pennsylvania, includes the 11 Finger Lakes and the forested Catskill Mountains.

The Erie-Ontario Lowland is a plain dotted with oval-shaped mounds called drumlins. It reaches the shores of two Great Lakes: Erie and Ontario. Stretching out toward the ocean is the Atlantic Coastal Plain. It includes the sandy beaches and bays of Staten Island and Long Island.

New York is home to large mammals such as black bears, bobcats , and moose, plus smaller mammals like weasels, raccoons , and skunks . Golden eagles, peregrine falcons , and wild turkeys are common birds , as well as blue jays, cardinals, and woodpeckers . Reptiles include snapping turtles, diamondback terrapins, and queen snakes. Also be on the lookout for amphibians such as the eastern hellbender, a 30-inch-long salamander.

You’re likely to see oaks, pines, and sugar maples, the state tree. Flowers like azaleas, rhododendrons, and New England asters are all common.

NATURAL RESOURCES

New York is known for supplying construction materials such as limestone, salt, sand, and gravel. It’s also one of the top states for garnets, though they’re used for industrial purposes instead of jewelry. And New York is the only state that mines wollastonite, used for manufacturing ceramics and paints.

—Hear the roar of 750,000 gallons of water crashing down every second over Niagara Falls, which borders New York and Canada. You can even sail close enough to get soaked on a boat tour.

—New York City is the most populous city in the United States, with around 8.5 million residents. You can look down from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building, climb 377 steps to the Statue of Liberty’s crown, and tour Ellis Island, where over 12 million immigrants entered the United States between 1892 and 1924.

—Famous New York residents include U.S. presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy.

—New York is the only state that borders both the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes.

Fire Safety Education Program

new york presentation for school

The goal of the Fire Safety Education Program is to eliminate residential fire deaths in New York City. Fire deaths have dropped steadily during the past decades and studies have shown that there is a direct link to strong public education programs. The goal of FDNY instructors is to continually educate the public with critical lifesaving strategies that focus on fire prevention, with a special focus on the City's most vulnerable populations and at-risk communities.

The program includes:

  • Presentations at local schools and community centers in New York City.
  • Planned visits to New York City firehouses or EMS stations.
  • Hands-on practice inside the Department's Mobile Fire Safety Experience Trailer.
  • Community outreach at events, such as street fairs, parades and more.
  • Visits from Hotdog, the FDNY fire safety mascot, or Siren, the FDNY life safety mascot.

Request a Presentation

The Fire Safety Education Unit is specially trained to conduct public education and community outreach. To ensure your request for a presentation is fulfilled, please give a minimum two weeks' notice.

WeGrow School – New York City

  • Bjarke Ingels Group
  • area / size 10,000 sqft
  • Completed 2018
  • Location New York City , New York , , United States
  • Type Early Childhood Education , Preschool , Primary (K-8) , Schools ,

Bjarke Ingels Group  has collaborated with WeWork to design the first WeGrow school, a Montessori inspired learning environment for ages three to nine, located in New York City, New York.

BIG and WeWork’s collaboration and belief in creativity manifests through the first WeGrow school in New York City. The interactive learning landscape supports a conscious approach to education, nurturing the growth, spirit and mind of the 21st century child. The 10,000 ft2 learning universe for children aged three to nine is located in WeWork’s HQ in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. A field of spaces with a variety of functions allow children to move freely throughout the day and to learn from the environment around them and each other. The learning landscape encourages collaboration by emphasizing transparent and communal spaces, which comprise more than half of the school: four classrooms, flexible workshops, community space, multi-purpose studio, art studio, music room and other playscapes support the energy of creation and togetherness. Most of the partitions inside the school are shelves raised to the level of the child, allowing natural light to reach deep inside the building. Three different shelving levels for each age group curve occasionally to create various activity pockets and give a feeling of comfort, safety and community, while allowing teachers to have full perspective of the space at all times. Above, acoustic clouds made of felt reflect the different patterns in nature – fingerprint, coral, landscape and moon – and illuminate with Ketra bulbs that shift in color and intensity based on the time of day. Each learning station within WeGrow includes furniture with details and materials carefully designed by BIG to optimize the educational environment: modular classrooms promote movement and collaboration, puzzle tables and chairs manufactured by Bendark Studios come in kid and parent sizes to offer equal perspectives, and the vertical garden with tiles made in Switzerland by Laufen house different plants depending on shade exposure. The mushroom shelves and magic meadow create a calm setting for a more focused study while reading hives form an immersive library for an organic learning environment. Teachers and parents share the lobby with the children, where a playful felt nook forms from the smooth cut out in the walls to serve as a flexible work, meet and waiting area. Children can join in the brain puzzle, an all-felt lounge that can be taken apart for playing and learning. From the lobby to the classrooms, WeGrow is lit by Gople Lamp and Alphabet of Light – flexible lighting systems designed by BIG Ideas and manufactured by Artemide to create ambience effects that form comfortable, natural lighting throughout the school day. Playful and transparent, yet homelike and structured, WeGrow nurtures the child’s education through introspection, exploration and discovery.

Government and Culture Reform

Classroom visits are available for request during the school year. New York Fed Economic Education will offer accessible and informative presentations in your classroom on topics such as the role and history of the Federal Reserve System, monetary policy, economics as a career, and college financing. Visits are designed to reach students in schools that may benefit from resources to teach economic literacy, including Title I high schools and community colleges. The program aims to advance understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the Federal Reserve and help increase diversity in the fields of economics and finance. Presentations are free and can be scheduled Monday through Friday during the school year. Schools in the Federal Reserve's Second District receive priority for scheduling. Visits can be conducted either virtually or in-person, subject to availability. Interested professors and teachers should request a visit.

Please note that requests are reviewed and scheduled on an ongoing basis throughout the year. Scheduling a visit is subject to availability.

Classroom visits give students an opportunity to learn directly from New York Fed staff. These visits encourage active dialogue between students, educators, and New York Fed employees, and help develop students' analytical and critical thinking. The program also serves to complement a school's social studies, civics, history, economics and/or business curriculum.

DOT outlining options for $55 million Route 36 Corridor project at Hornell public forum

new york presentation for school

New York state's plans to transform a key Hornell thoroughfare will come into sharper focus at a public meeting next week.

From 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 30 in the Hornell High School auditorium, Department of Transportation engineers will update the status of the $55 million Route 36 project and outline how the busy four-lane corridor from Cass Street in the City of Hornell to the southern limit of the Village of Arkport may be changing in the next decade.

Following the presentations, the gathering will move over to the high school cafeteria for an open house session.

What the Route 36 Corridor project is all about

The Route 36 changes are expected to address concerns arising from the 1970s construction of the four-lane, which did not account for a rise in commercial development along the corridor or make accommodations for pedestrians and people on bikes.

According to DOT, goals include improving safety, calming traffic and accommodating an increase in pedestrian and bicycle use along a major stretch of Hornell roadway that sees 13,000 vehicles a day across 10 intersections.

A “suburban transition area” from Adsit Street to Big Creek Road includes the Hornell Plaza anchored by Walmart and Wegmans, where some of the highest traffic volumes are recorded.

That transition area also has significant speed limit changes, varying from 30 to 45 to 55 miles per hour.

At a July 2022 public meeting , DOT said roundabouts at strategic intersections, full access at the northern plaza driveway and extending the two-lane section of 36 from Arkport south along the “rural” section of the corridor were under consideration, as are other concepts, like adjusting speed limits.

During the 2022 meeting, DOT noted there is a well-worn path in the grass median between 36 and the plaza, indicating a steady stream of foot traffic, but the area is unlit and does not have any pedestrian accommodations.

Here's the tentative Route 36 project timeline

DOT said engineers will present "preferred alternatives" or options at the Hornell High School meeting. The high school is located at 134 Seneca St.

The project remains in development and public input will continue to be collected, DOT said.

A project outline envisions bid openings in fall 2026, with construction beginning shortly after. Construction is expected to be completed during the winter of 2028-29.

Both state and federal funding sources will be tapped for the project, according to the timeline.

New Nutrition Guidelines Put Less Sugar and Salt on the Menu for School Meals

The Agriculture Department finalized a new rule to bring the meals more in line with federal dietary standards.

A student forks up some food from a red tray divided into compartments. There is also a small open carton of milk.

By Linda Qiu

Reporting from Washington

School meals will soon contain less salt and sugar, but can still include chocolate milk, under new nutrition guidelines released by the Biden administration.

The Agriculture Department on Wednesday finalized the regulation it had first proposed in February 2023 , having weakened several provisions after feedback from food companies, school nutrition professionals and over 136,000 public comments.

“All of this is designed to ensure that students have quality meals and that we meet parents’ expectation that their children are receiving healthy and nutritious meals at school,” Tom Vilsack, the agriculture secretary, said in a call with reporters on Tuesday.

The new guidelines, which seek to better align school meals with federal dietary standards , build on a 2010 law that aimed to make cafeteria breakfasts and lunches healthier. That law, championed by Michelle Obama when she was the first lady, became embroiled in political debate almost immediately. The Trump administration tried repeatedly to roll back nutrition standards , and the Biden administration relaxed certain provisions to provide more flexibility during the coronavirus pandemic.

When the Agriculture Department proposed updates to the standards last year, school nutrition professionals called the guidelines unrealistic to enforce and dairy groups expressed concerns over what they called a push to limit milk.

The final rule reflects some of those concerns.

Under the rule, schools will need to limit the amount of added sugars in cereals and yogurts beginning in the 2025-26 academic year and gradually step up reductions in other foods.

Added sugars currently provide about 17 percent of calories in school breakfasts and 11 percent in school lunches on average, according to a May 2022 government report . Federal dietary guidelines recommend that no more than 10 percent of daily calories come from added sugars.

Schools will need to reduce sodium in lunches by 15 percent from current levels and in breakfasts by 10 percent by the 2027-28 academic year. This was scaled back from a proposed reduction of 30 percent by the 2029-30 school year. Mr. Vilsack said the Agriculture Department was unable to more meaningfully cut salt because it was essentially handcuffed by a policy rider in a spending package Congress approved in March limiting sodium reduction in school meals.

Current standards limit sodium for students in grades K-5 to 1,650 milligrams for breakfast and lunch combined, and the policy rider essentially capped the level at 1,420 milligrams. Federal dietary guidelines recommend no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium daily for children ages 4 through 8.

Dairy, too, was spared from further reductions. Students can still glug chocolate, strawberry and other flavored milks under the final rule, provided that the beverages meet the limit on added sugars.

Flavored milk was the main source of added sugars in school meals, according to the 2022 government report. The Agriculture Department had considered banning the beverages for grades K-5 under the proposed regulation. But it decided against doing so, Mr. Vilsack said, because the dairy industry “stepped up to the challenge” and is working on making flavored milk products with less sugar.

The final rule also retains the current standard requiring that 80 percent of cereals and legumes offered be whole grains. The department had considered requiring all grains to be whole, with one exception a week for a refined grain product.
