So, we’ve put together this helpful list of words that might appear in your cover letter along with some synonyms to use instead. Let’s transform you from a strong people manager with a strong background in building strong teams into a more well-rounded candidate, eh?

In most situations, there’s likely to be a more suitable way to say ‘eager’. Here are some options for you:

  • “I’m eager to hear from you” —> “I look forward to exploring my fit for this role with you”
  • “I’m eager to join a company like yours” —> “Joining a company I respect is important to me”

What is a Cover Letter? 

A cover letter is a one-page document that you submit as part of your job application, alongside your resume . 

Its purpose is to introduce you and briefly summarize your professional background. On average, your cover letter should be from 250 to 400 words long .

A good cover letter can give the hiring manager more insight into what makes you a good candidate and help them make up their mind about whether they should invite you for an interview. A bad cover letter, though, will get ignored (at best) and lose you the job (at worst).

So, to make sure this doesn’t happen, it’s essential to know how to write a convincing cover letter.

The first thing to remember is that a cover letter is a supplement to your resume, not a replacement. Meaning, you shouldn’t just repeat whatever is mentioned in your resume and call it a day. 

Optimally, you should use your cover letter to shed more light on your skills and qualifications, as well as explain anything you didn’t have space for in your resume (e.g. a career gap or why you’re changing careers).

If you’re writing a cover letter for the first time, though, putting all this together might seem pretty tough. 

Fortunately, you can follow our tried-and-tested format to make the experience much easier:

  • Header - Input your contact information.
  • Greeting the hiring manager - Open the cover letter with a “Dear Sir or Madam,” or use the hiring manager’s name if you know what that is.
  • Opening paragraph - Grab the hiring manager’s attention by getting straight to the point. Mention what your professional experiences are, and what role you’re applying for.
  • The second paragraph - Explain why you’re the perfect candidate for the job. Mention your top 2-3 achievements, your top skills, why you want to work in that specific industry, and whatever else is relevant.
  • The third paragraph - End your cover letter with a call to action. E.g. “I would love to meet personally and discuss how I can help Company X.”
  • Formal closing - Something like this: “Thank you for your consideration. Best, John Doe.”

Now that we've covered the basics, let's talk about cover letter tips . Below, we'll give you all the knowledge you need to take your cover letter from "OK" to "great."

#1. Pick the right template

A good cover letter is all about leaving the right first impression.

And what’s a better way to leave a good impression than through a professional, well-formatted, and visual template?

#2. Add your contact details on the header

The best way to start your cover letter is through a header. 

Here’s what you want to include there:

  • Phone Number
  • Name of the hiring manager / their professional title
  • Name of the company you’re applying to

Optionally, you can also include the following:

  • Social Media Profiles - Any type of profile that’s relevant to your field. Social Profiles on websites like LinkedIn, GitHub (for developers), Medium (for writers), etc.
  • Personal Website - If you have a personal website that somehow adds value to your application, you can mention it. Let’s say you’re a professional writer. In that case, you’d want to link to your content portfolio site or blog.

#3. Greet the hiring manager the right way

Once you’ve listed all your relevant contact information, it’s time to address the hiring manager reading your cover letter. 

A good practice here is to find the hiring manager’s name and address them directly instead of using the traditional “dear sir or madam.” This shows that you’re really invested in the company and that you took your time to do some research about the job.

So, how can you find out the hiring manager’s name?

One way to do this is by looking up the head of the company’s relevant department on LinkedIn. Let’s say you’re applying for the position of Communication Specialist at Novoresume. The hiring manager is probably the Head of Communications or the Chief Communications Office.

Or let’s say you’re applying for the position of server at a restaurant. In that case, you’d be looking to find out who the restaurant manager is.

If this doesn’t work, you can also check out the “Team” page on the company website; there’s a good chance you’ll at least find the right person there.

If you still can’t find out the hiring manager’s name, here are several other greetings you can use:

  • Dear [Department] Hiring Manager
  • Dear Hiring Manager
  • To whom it may concern
  • Dear [Department] Team

#4. Create an attention-grabbing introduction

Recruiters get hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of applications. Chances are, they’re not going to be reading every single cover letter end-to-end.

So, it’s essential to catch their attention from the very first paragraph.

The problem with most cover letter opening paragraphs, though, is that they’re usually extremely generic, often looking something like this: 

Hey, my name is Jonathan and I’d like to work as a Sales Manager at XYZ Inc. I’ve worked as a sales manager at MadeUpCompany Inc. for 5+ years, so I believe that I’d be a good fit for the position.

As you can probably tell, this opening paragraph doesn’t tell the hiring manager anything other than that you’ve worked the job before - and that’s not really helpful in setting you apart from other candidates. 

What you want to do, instead, is start off with 2-3 of your top achievements to really grab the reader’s attention. Preferably, the achievements should be as relevant as possible to the position. 

For example:

My name’s Michael and I’d like to help XYZ Inc. hit and exceed its sales goals as a Sales Manager. I’ve worked with Company X, a fin-tech company, for 3+ years. As a Sales Representative, I generated an average of $30,000+ in sales per month (beating the KPIs by around 40%). I believe that my previous industry experience, as well as my excellence in sales, makes me the right candidate for the role of X at Company Y.

The second example shows how the candidate is a top performer. The first just shows that they’ve worked a sales job before.

#5. Show you’re the perfect person for the job

One great thing about cover letters is that they allow you to expand more on the top achievements from your resume and really show the hiring manager that you’re the right person for the job. 

A good way to do that is to first read the job ad and really understand what skills/experiences are required, and then to ensure that your cover letter touches upon the said skills or experiences.

In my previous role as a Facebook Marketing Expert at XYZ Inc. I handled customer acquisition through ads, managing a monthly Facebook ad budget of $20,000+. As the sole digital marketer at the company, I managed the ad creation and management process end-to-end. This means I created the ad copy and images, as well as picked the targeting, ran optimization trials, and so on.

#6. Explain why you’re a great company fit

The HR manager doesn’t only look at whether you’ll be good at the job or not. They’re looking for someone that’s also a good fit for the company culture.

#7. Wrap up with a call to action

To make the end of your cover letter as memorable as possible, you want to:

  • Wrap up any points you couldn't in the previous paragraphs. Mention anything you’ve left out that you think could help the hiring manager make up your mind.
  • Thank the hiring manager for their time. After all, it never hurts to be polite. 
  • Finish the cover letter with a call to action. A call to action is a great way to make your cover letter ending as memorable as possible. 

#8. Write a formal closing

Once you’re done with the final paragraph, all you have to do is write down a formal “goodbye” and you’re good to go.

Well, it’s Tuesday and I’m still sick, though at this point it’s mostly just a sore throat and a congestion headache from hell. Nasty little bug, but not a real bad fever or anything, which I’m thankful for. Not a terrible cough, either. I’ve had worse! I used to get terrible sore throats all the time, often coupled with high fevers, until at the young age of 35 I had my tonsils removed.

That was a blessing, though the actual recovery from a tonsillectomy is one of the worst things I’ve ever experienced. It’s much worse as an adult. The only silver lining was that I lost a lot of weight—which I promptly put right back on!

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday, I got the Wordle in just two guesses. Today, four. The sad thing is, my opening guess was quite good. I had three yellow boxes after STORE and just 53 words remaining. By all accounts, I should have been able to wrap this up in three, but it was kind of a tricky word!

ROACH did cut that number down significantly, slashing 53 to just 9, and from there I picked a word I’m quite familiar with: ROWER, something I use on the regular when I go to my OrangeTheory HIIT workout classes. Works every muscle group! Alas, I was still off but could only think of one other word—ROVER—which was lucky because Wordle Bot later informed me there were three still remaining, including ROPER and ROGER. Thankfully ROVER was the Wordle. Huzzah!

How To Play Competitive Wordle

Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.

If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word "rover" has an intriguing etymology that traces back to its roots in the Old Norse and Middle Dutch languages. It originally stems from the Old Norse word "rafr," meaning "pirate, rover." The Middle Dutch "rover" means "robber, pirate," and is similarly related. The verb form likely began as "roven," meaning "to rob, plunder."

In English, the term "rover" evolved to describe a person who roams or wanders, retaining the connotation of roaming in an adventurous or unlawful manner, akin to its roots associated with pirates and robbers. Later, it broadened to include any sort of wanderer and is now commonly used in various contexts to describe someone or something that travels without a fixed route, like a space rover exploring other planets.

Wheel of Misfortune: Boynton woman in good spirits after vowel slip-up costs her Hawaii trip

Boynton Beach resident Kim Weisenberg had grand visions going into her once-in-a-lifetime shot on the television game show "Wheel of Fortune."

Spinning the wheel and landing on that coveted million-dollar wedge, solving puzzles and winning big to help her parents pay off debt, pay off her own student loans and take her family on vacation were all part of the dream scenario.

It didn't exactly work out that way and although she ended up with one of the more heartbreaking moments in the show's history, she did win a chunk of money, a trip and wound up with a lifetime of great memories.

'Wheel of Fortune' contestant from Boynton Beach started strong, then stumbled

Weisenberg, who is a yoga instructor, started out on fire, winning a total of $12,000 in cash and prizes —$4,000 for solving two puzzles including a “Toss Up” — and a trip to San Antonio, Texas, valued at $8,000.

Then came the fifth puzzle, which was a prize puzzle with a category of "Place." Weisenberg was in great position to strike it big after accumulating $17,550 in wheel spins. Her first guess alone earned her a whopping $14,000 by landing on the $3,500 wedge and correctly guessing four T's.

After several successful turns, only three letters were missing with the puzzle reading THE ENTRANCE T_ A CA_T_E.

This is when things took a surprising twist for Weisenberg. She wasn't sure what the last word was, but she figured the first four words were "THE ENTRANCE TO A" so she decided to buy a vowel, specifically an "O" to help solve the puzzle.

"I would either see that there was still another vowel, or I would see that there were no more vowels,” she said of her strategy.

The only problem: her brain thought the letter "O" and what came out of her mouth was the letter "U."

Silence. Then the dreaded buzzer and a gasp from the crowd.

The camera then panned to Chicago public school instructional coach Takyra Garner, who was the contestant next to Weisenberg. Host Pat Sajak told Garner she could solve the puzzle if she wanted.

"The entrance to a castle," Garner said, winning a trip to Hawaii worth $8,299 along with $11,000 in her earnings.

"Yeah, that's it!" Sajak responded.

But Sajak wanted to take a moment to console Weisenberg.

"I know the game can be brutal sometimes," the host said to Weisenberg. "Sometimes you have a word that just doesn't want to come into focus. Don't beat yourself up."

Weisenberg said she had applied her yoga breathing and mindfulness techniques to stay calm and help fellow contestants do the same. However, that all went out the window when she had her costly hiccup.

“I intended to say ‘O’ and somehow ‘U’ slipped out," she explained. "I literally fell over. You don’t see that on the show, but I fell over. If I had said ‘O,’ I would have gotten it.

"You have to make a decision so fast, or they move on from your turn. When you’re up there, it’s so different than playing on your couch. There were a million things going on in my mind. I tried to focus so hard. That word ‘castle’ wouldn’t come to me.”

Weisenberg, who is married with two boys Everett, 10, and Finley, 5, said she grew up watching "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy."

“I have always been a fan since I was a little girl," she said. "I wanted to be Vanna White growing up. There was a contest where they had people try out to be Vanna and they did a show to be her. I didn’t get selected for that, but when I got to be a contestant, I felt like I was a bottle of champagne that was shaken up. I was so excited.”

Weisenberg said Everett spotted her knack at solving puzzles and encouraged her to apply four years ago. It wasn’t until last July that she heard back from producers and went through the casting process. To prepare, she played a lot of puzzles in her spare time.

“I have those old-school variety puzzle games. I play 'Hangman' when I’m out to dinner with my kids and we need to keep them entertained and off technology,” she said. “There’s a 'Wheel of Fortune' app that I play. I am in a book club. I do audio, so I don’t see the actual word, but I hear it, so I’m wondering if that helped a little bit too.”

Weisenberg filmed her episode on Feb. 22, just in time to appear on one of longtime host Pat Sajack’s last episodes before he retires. After 41 years, Sajak, 77, will take his final bow on the June 7 episode and will be replaced by Ryan Seacrest next season. Vanna White renewed her contract as the letter flipper through the 2025-2026 season.

“I adore (Pat). I think he’s the sweetest guy. Even on that puzzle that I messed up on, he was like, ‘Don’t beat yourself up.’

"Afterward, during a commercial break, he was like, ‘It happens to everybody. Don’t worry about it,’ ” she said. “He seems like the nicest person, the classic game show host. I couldn’t be more grateful to have both of them be the hosts when I was there. (Vanna) is as American as apple pie.”

Weisenberg’s dad accompanied her on her first trip to California when she flew out to Los Angeles to film "Wheel." During their brief visit, they squeezed in some sightseeing. The daddy-daughter duo shared on Instagram their trip to the Santa Monica Pier, a long walk to Venice and back and a drive up the Pacific Coast Highway to the oceanfront seafood restaurant Duke’s in Malibu where she enjoyed watching the waves crash on rocks and sunset during dinner.

THURSDAY PUZZLE — David Kwong is a magician , and one of the things I like about his puzzles is that his enigmatist’s sensibilities and knack for illusion inform his crossword themes.

In his last puzzle in The New York Times , Mr. Kwong used elements of a common idiom as a cipher to describe other phrases. When I finally understood what was going on, I sat back and gasped like Mr. Kwong had just pulled a rabbit out of his hat. Not that Mr. Kwong would stoop to such a cliché. I’m not even sure he owns a hat.

Today’s puzzle solved like an exercise in misdirection: While I was busy looking at the grid one way, Mr. Kwong was palming a relevant bit of the theme and hiding it in a not-so-obvious place. It’s a lovely example of the kind of prestidigitation I like to see in his crosswords, and I’m happy that he’s back.

Today’s Theme

Asterisks, which are also called stars when they are included in crossword clues, are a fairly common feature in puzzles. They typically indicate that the clue and its answer are part of the theme.

In Mr. Kwong’s puzzle, the stars mean something else, and solvers must read the revealer at 63A in a different way in order to figure it out.

Can you solve this puzzle without doing so? Probably. Should you? In my opinion, no, because then you’ll miss out on all the fun.

The revealer clue is “Thrice-remade movie … or, when parsed as six words, a hint to the theme clues in this puzzle,” and the answer is A STAR IS BORN. The problem is that, as they are, the theme answers don’t really make much sense in relation to their clues.

For example, at 17A, the answer to the clue “*Allot time” is ELECTION DAY. Granted, we should all allot time to vote, but something about this is not quite right. Back to the revealer.

What if we parsed the movie title from 17A differently, as the clue asked? The only way I can see to make it six words is to write it as A STAR IS “B” OR “N.”

And that, my friends, is the key to the whole theme. We need to swap out those stars for either a B or an N. Using the example above, “*Allot time” would be “Ballot time,” and that makes much more sense as a clue for 17A.

Let’s do a couple more. At 53A, THE CRETAN BULL is clued as “*Ovid of Greek mythology.” Mr. Kwong can’t be talking about Ovid the poet because he was a real person, not a mythological character. But if you place a B where the star is, the clue becomes “Bovid of Greek mythology,” which is a better description of the BULL .

This last one took me a few minutes. At 40A, the clue for RIVIERA is “*Ice is found on it.” Replace the star with an N and the clue reads “Nice is found on it.” (That’s Nice, the city in France, although I’m sure the people on the RIVIERA are perfectly nice.)

Tricky Clues

13A. This measure of inflation does not refer to economics, but to the inflation of a tire: The answer is PSI, or pounds per square inch.

20A. I like the way this clue (“Account that is overdrawn?”) seems to be hinting at a bank account. The account in this puzzle is a SAGA. My guess is that it’s overdrawn because a SAGA is a long and drawn-out story.

5D. Now this is funny. Hands up if you immediately pictured underpants on a person’s head after reading the clue “Bloomers worn around one’s head?” Me too. These “Bloomers” are flowers, and the only three-letter word I can think of that refers to a ring of flowers (“around the head”) is LEI.

24D. I wrote in “rime” and “snow” for “Winter frost” before I realized that the answer was HOAR.

26D. The “Superman portrayer” is Christopher REEVE, not to be mistaken with George Reeves, who played Superman on television from 1952 to 1958.

27D. Mr. Kwong and the puzzle editors must have been absolutely thrilled with this clue, and I don’t blame them. It is so evocative of the kind of person Muhammad ALI was. Just picture them, sitting around a desk with their pencils behind their ears and coming up with this winner: “Athlete with the only vertically mounted marker on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, so his holy name is not walked upon.”

34D. Beware the question mark clue; it can never be taken at face value. This means that “Sightsee?” does not refer to visiting places of interest. It means seeing along the sight of a gun, and the answer is AIM.

61D. If you are in the middle of a “Cross fit?” — two words instead of the one word that refers to an exercise program — you may be in a SNIT.

Constructor Notes

Hello Puzzledom! I’m so excited to be back with another Thursday crossword. This one has been years in the making with lots of fun workshopping with the editorial team. First, I can’t help myself and I’d like to tell you about my original vision for this puzzle. The key theme answer A STAR IS “B” OR “N" was originally intended to create two clues with the same number — a Schrödinger gimmick for the clues, instead of for the answer. “*Ear’s opposite” would have yielded two different clues, both “Bear’s opposite” (bull) and “Near’s opposite” (far). I then proposed there be two clues for each entry in the grid. Fun, right? Nope, can’t do that. Apparently the programming can’t handle such wackiness. On to the next idea. Joel Fagliano, the senior puzzle editor, proposed that I rework the puzzle and focus on the most misleading clues that had a B or N missing. Mislead people? Gladly (I’m a magician)! I had two goals as I set out to do this: To create clues with the most “surface sense,” and to mess with pronunciation. I believe I achieved surface sense with all of them — my favorite being “*Ovid of Greek mythology.” I hope that earns equal gasps and groans. Also, I was dealing with a very, very narrow set of words to play with. Unlike in the puzzle’s original conception, I couldn’t have words that worked for both B and N. So as much as I loved the pronunciation change when *Ike became Nike, I couldn’t use it because of Bike. Last, I had one submitted grid that featured the following theme entry. I’m sorry it didn’t make it! “*Ones on TV can be found here”: THE ENTERPRISE. I hope you enjoyed the puzzle!

The following outline provides a high-level overview of the FTC’s proposed final rule :

  • Specifically, the final rule provides that it is an unfair method of competition—and therefore a violation of Section 5 of the FTC Act—for employers to enter into noncompetes with workers after the effective date.
  • Fewer than 1% of workers are estimated to be senior executives under the final rule.
  • Specifically, the final rule defines the term “senior executive” to refer to workers earning more than $151,164 annually who are in a “policy-making position.”
  • Reduced health care costs: $74-$194 billion in reduced spending on physician services over the next decade.
  • New business formation: 2.7% increase in the rate of new firm formation, resulting in over 8,500 additional new businesses created each year.
  • This reflects an estimated increase of about 3,000 to 5,000 new patents in the first year noncompetes are banned, rising to about 30,000-53,000 in the tenth year.
  • This represents an estimated increase of 11-19% annually over a ten-year period.
  • The average worker’s earnings will rise an estimated extra $524 per year.
