The minimum course requirement for a PhD student is normally 32 units for students whose highest degree is a BTech (or equivalent), and 16 for those who have an MTech (or equivalent). The PG committee may ask the students with insufficient background to do additional courses (in addition to 32/16 units). For detailed course of requirement refer PG regulations
  • In special cases, for students with advance standing by virtue of their academic preparedness and/or by virtue of their professional work experience, some of the course requirements may be waived. All such waivers shall be decided upon by the PG Committee and reported to the Senate.
  • The PhD students are expected to finish their course requirements as per the timelines mentioned in PG Regulations.
  • Transfer of Credits for Courses done Outside: Students may be permitted to do academic work and courses in places of repute outside IIIT-Delhi. Based on their performance/quantum of work done and the content of the course, the PG committee may consider them equivalent to some course credits, and waive credit requirements for similar courses/projects within IIIT-Delhi. Institutions with which IIIT-Delhi has arrangements/MOU/student exchange programs, transfer of credits may also be permitted. Any such waivers/transfer is permitted only if the courses being considered have not been counted for any other degree/diploma requirement.
  • A PhD student may be permitted to replace up to two courses done by him/her and in which he/she has obtained passing, but not good, grade. The replacement will be permitted as and when the request is made by the concerned student. In this case, the earlier course will be listed in the transcript as having been taken on “Audit”. He / She may also be permitted to do extra courses to improve the CGPA. All such permissions shall be granted by the PG committee upon requests from the students.

Teaching Requirements

One of the potential career options for the research students is academics. The PhD program at IIIT-Delhi aims to develop suitable teaching skills among the research students through teaching requirements. Towards this, it requires all students on financial assistantship plan of the Institute are required to take part in the teaching activities. All PhD students must be TA for at least two semesters to satisfy the teaching requirements for a PhD degree. Students on research assistantship will also be required to complete this requirement, though they may be assigned lighter load each semester. The teaching requirement may be waived for part-time and/or sponsored candidates.

Thesis Requirements

  • All PhD students irrespective of their entry category are expected to successfully complete a minimum of 56 units by thesis. In truly exceptional cases where the PhD candidate is ready with a thesis before he/she has accumulated these credits, the PG committee can consider waiving off some of these units. For the purpose of grading in the thesis units registered, the progress in the thesis work shall be assessed by the thesis supervisor(s). For each semester, one S (if the performance is satisfactory) or one X (if the performance is not satisfactory) grade shall be awarded by the thesis supervisor(s). The thesis grades shall be submitted by the thesis supervisor(s) at the end of the semester.
  • Thesis supervisor and external co-supervisor: The thesis work shall be done under the guidance of the PhD supervisor, who shall be a faculty member of the Institute. There may be multiple supervisors. Normally, a student is expected to decide the supervisor(s) by the start of the second semester but can defer it till the end of second semester .This will be done by informing the PG Committee through a form, which shall be signed by the supervisor(s). A student can change the supervisor later – for this a formal request will have to be submitted to PG Committee and has to be signed by the old as well as the new supervisor. A student may also have external co-supervisors for the thesis. Such external co-supervisor shall be approved by the PG Committee upon a request by the student, duly approved and forwarded by the supervisor(s). The request must be accompanied by the CV/Bio or sufficient information about the proposed external co-supervisor which will allow the PGC to evaluate the suitability. Normally, the external co-supervisor should be finalized before the comprehensive and the PGC should be informed by the adviser and the student about the same.
  • Thesis evaluation and defense: All PhD theses will be evaluated by a panel of thesis examiners who are experts in that area, and the candidate will have to defend the thesis in front of this panel. The panel will consist of supervisor(s) of the student, and a minimum of three non-supervisor examiners, at most one of which can be from within the Institute. A thesis defense date will be fixed, after taking inputs from all examiners on the panel. The defense shall be open to all. At the end of the defense, the panel will deliberate and make an overall recommendation.

Minimum Qualifications for admission to Full-time PhD Programmes

Table 1 defines the minimum qualifications required for admission to full-time Ph. D. programmes at IIT Delhi. Please note:

These are Institute minimum requirements and any Department/Centre/School operating through their DRC/CRC/SRC can specify higher short-listing criteria than what is specified here.

This table includes most of the degrees, but each DRC/CRC/SRC is free to specify the qualifications and disciplines acceptable for admission to their programmes.

Candidates in the final year of their programmes and who expect to complete all their qualifying degree requirements before the date of registration are also eligible to apply for admissions. For short-listing purposes, their performance until the preceding semester (preceding year if their programmes are year based) would be considered but their admission would be provisional, subject to their meeting the minimum eligibility criteria after their final qualifying examination results are announced. In any case, all admissions are provisional at first and it is confirmed only after all certificates and previous records are duly checked and verified, a process which may take a few weeks into the starting semester.

Table 1: Minimum Qualification for Admission to full-time PhD Programmes

Exemptions, relaxations and clarifications:.

For SC/ST/PwD category candidates , the minimum performance in the qualifying degree (S. No. 1 & 2 in Table 1) is relaxed from 60% to 55% (CGPA relaxed from 6.00 to 5.50).

Qualifying degree performance is computed by aggregating performance over all the semesters/years of the qualifying degree, as per the credit or weightage system approved in the institution/ board where the degree has been completed.

Requirement of qualification in GATE / National Exam is waived for the following categories of applicants:

Currently registered students in Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) pursuing B.Tech./B.E./ Integrated M. Tech/ Integrated M.Sc. Programmes (or any other programme of minimum four year duration, admission to which is on the basis of JEE), who have completed 6 semesters or more, and have CGPA of 8.00 or above (on a 10 point scale). Such students must obtain a CGPA of 8.00 or above at the time of graduation, and before they formally register for the Ph.D. programme (80% aggregate marks, if marks are the primary mode of evaluation);

Graduates of CFTIs (in the programmes marked under (i)) with a final graduation CGPA of more than 8.00 (80% aggregate marks, if marks are the primary mode of evaluation);

M.A or M.Sc. graduates from IITs with CGPA 8.00 or above.

For purposes of shortlisting, the primary method of evaluation (i.e., CGPA/CPI, or aggregate percentage, whichever is appropriate) followed by the institution where candidate has obtained his/her qualifying degree will be used by IIT Delhi for determining whether the candidate meets the final shortlisting requirements.

For assistantship purposes only (and not for qualification), candidates with M.B.B.S. qualification will be considered equivalent to M. Tech., for admission to Ph.D. programme in Centre for Biomedical Engineering;

Allowing UG students direct entry into PhD through NET will improve research output: UGC chairman

N ew Delhi [India], April 22 (ANI): Permitting undergraduate students into PhD programs through the National Eligibility Test (NET) will strengthen the research ecosystem in India and "open up" many opportunities for students at a "very young age" in research, said UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar on Monday.

Jagadesh Kumar emphasised that there are "a lot of opportunities" to admit a significant number of PhD students, suggesting that the current capacity is sufficient to accommodate undergraduates seeking doctoral seats.

UGC recently announced that students with 4-year undergraduate degrees can now directly appear for the National Eligibility Test (NET) and pursue PhD.

For pursuing PhD with or without a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), students with 4-year undergraduate degrees need a minimum of 75 per cent aggregate marks or an equivalent grade.

Currently, a NET candidate requires a master's degree with a minimum of 55 per cent marks.

Speaking to ANI on the development: the UGC chairman said: "One of the objectives of NEP is to strengthen the research ecosystem in our universities. When we permit undergraduate students into PhD programs, you will have a lot of young people getting into research at a very young age, and they are really creative."

"We believe that permitting undergraduate students to get into a PhD will open up many opportunities for them to carry out cutting-edge research and increase the quality of research output in our country, keeping that in mind," the chairman told ANI.

Jagadesh Kumar also asserted that it is necessary to see if the student has the aptitude for doing a PhD.

"Currently, the assistant professor can take 4 PhD students, the associate professor can take six PhD students and the professor can take 10 PhD students, so we already have a lot of opportunities for admitting a large number of PhD students," he said.

"We also need to see whether the student has the aptitude for doing a PhD. PhD is not like an undergrad or a master's degree program. That's the reason why we are saying that the student has to clear the UGC NET, but they also have to attend an interview at the university where their research aptitude and readiness for doing research will be examined," he added.

The NET is conducted twice a year, in June and December. Its scores are currently used to award a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and to determine eligibility for an appointment as an assistant professor for those with a Master's degree.

On Indian universities' performance in QS university rankings, the UGC chairman said that efforts put into research during the last five or six years are bearing fruit now.

"You see, during the last five or six years, there have been increased efforts to improve the research ecosystem in our universities across the country. And we are seeing the result of that. We undoubtedly have world-class institutions," he added.

India will continue to grow to be one of the top countries in the world in terms of the quality of its research output, he underscored.

The latest QS World University Rankings by Subject were published on April 10th, starting with the Indian higher education system.

As per the information shared by the President of QS University Rankings, Nunzio Quacquarelli, Indian universities have seen the highest performance improvement among all G20 nations.

This is a significant 14 per cent year-on-year improvement in their average ranking.

Across Asia, India now holds the second-highest number of featured universities in the QS Subject Rankings, he added. China has grabbed the first spot. (ANI)
