International Staff Mobility

  • For international researchers at the University of Copenhagen
  • Salary, Tax and Pension

As a researcher employed at the University of Copenhagen, you automatically fall under the Collective Agreement for Academics in the State  (Danish). Your basic salary, number of holidays, pension and much more is determined by this agreement. The Danish labour market is characterised by strong trade unions and collective agreements, termed the Danish Model. It means that the general terms of employment are not regulated by the Government but by collective agreements made by the trade unions and employer associations.

Please make sure to inform the HR Center (who issues your contract) about your CPR number in order to get paid.

Salary components

Your salary consists of a basic pay rate based on your seniority.

When employed as a member of scientific staff (i.e. research assistant, PhD fellow, postdoc, associate professor, professor, professor with special responsibilities) you will receive a centrally agreed supplement (tillæg) attached to the specific job category.

If you hold a professorship your salary is not based on seniority, but placed in a separate and higher wage bracket.

Wage negotiations

In addition to the basic payment and supplements attached to the job category, the collective agreement and the university wage policy allow for further supplements by local agreement and negotiation. The most commonly supplements are:

  • Qualification supplements (based on professional and personal qualifications, quality of performance), which are usually granted as a permanent supplement.
  • Special-duty supplements, are usually granted in connection with special functions linked to particular tasks.
  • One-off payments, as a matter of remuneration following a particular effort.

You are entitled to a wage negotiation, when taking up employment with the University. Furthermore, all employees are entitled to negotiate their salary once a year or when taking up a new position/function within the University.

The wage being settled as part of the collective agreement implicates that it is the trade union representative who negotiates the wage on behalf of the staff. This is also the case for the yearly negotiations on any supplement.

The outcome will, however, depend on local conditions, budgets and policies. Your trade union representative is mentioned in your employment offer by the University.

Working hours

Working hours are generally fixed by collective agreement. Working hours are presently 37 hours a week at full-time employment.

Part-time It is possible to obtain an agreement on part-time employment, but this will depend on the local planning and organisation of work, and the decision lies with your head of department/executive head.

Overtime Employees who plan their own work, or whose working time cannot be checked are not entitled to overtime pay. However, the employer may grant overtime remuneration by specific assessment if the scope of the additional work has been considerable.

PhD, Postdoc, and Professor Salaries in Denmark

In Denmark, academic salaries are determined by contracts negotiated between academic unions and the government. The Collective Agreement for Academics in the State sets each position’s basic salary level for five seniority grades. Employees receive two supplements on top of this base salary: A position-based supplement (which is stipulated by collective agreement) and a qualification-based supplement (which is set by each university). Professors’ salaries are not based on seniority and use a separate wage scale. They still receive position- and qualification-based supplements. To see how this all comes together, take a look at the salary scale for Copenhagen Business School here and Aalborg University here . The salaries statistics in this article do not account for taxes, which are around 40-50% in Denmark.

PhD fellows in Denmark are considered employees not students and most PhDs are fully funded. Before starting a PhD in Denmark you must have a Master’s degree first, although there are some programs that take a year longer and combine a Master’s and PhD. Danish students do not do coursework; they start working on the project that will become their thesis immediately. It is often expected that PhD fellows will teach a course during their degree, which takes three years to earn.

At Copenhagen Business School , the salary for a PhD fellow ranges from 28,838 to 34,865 DKK per month, while at Aalborg University it ranges from 26,653 to 31,847. The average monthly salary for a PhD fellow at the University of Copenhagen is DKK 36,911 in 2023.

After earning their doctorate, researchers go on to a postdoc which, in Denmark, can last up to four years at the same university. A postdoc is a continuation of the researcher’s training that allows them to further specialize in a particular field and learn new skills and techniques. It may also require them to take on some teaching responsibilities.

At Copenhagen Business School , the salary for a postdoc ranges from 35,264 to 47,695 DKK per month, while at Aalborg University it ranges from 29,520 to 34,847. The average monthly salary for a postdoc at the University of Copenhagen is 46,180 DKK.

An adjunkt is equivalent to an assistant professor. The position can be either fixed term for a maximum of four years or tenure track. The main responsibilities of an adjunkt are research and research-based teaching. At this level, they are also supervised by a higher ranking professor and given the opportunity to improve their pedagogical skills. If the adjunkt is on the tenure track, their performance is assessed after six years and, if successful, they are promoted to a lektor.

At Copenhagen Business School , the salary for an assistant professor ranges from 35,264 to 47,695 DKK per month, while at Aalborg University it ranges from 29,520 to 34,847. The average monthly salary for an assistant professor at the University of Copenhagen is 48,436 DKK.

Equivalent to an associate professor, a lektor is a permanent position. Like others of the professorial rank, they are responsible for research and research-based teaching, as well as supervising and mentoring assistant professors. While this is considered a tenured position, it does not offer further promotion to a professor as in North America. The hiring process for professors is always thorough open calls.

At Copenhagen Business School , the salary for an associate professor ranges from 43,049 to 56,592 DKK per month, while at Aalborg University it ranges from 37,622 to 44,289. The average monthly salary for an associate professor at the University of Copenhagen is 51,768 DKK.

Professor med særlige opgaver

This title translates to professor with special responsibilities. These positions give talented, young researchers an opportunity to develop a new field of research at an international level. They focus on teaching, research and innovation. It is a three- to five-year fixed term position with an option for extension to eight years total. At the end of the appointment, the special responsibilities end and the academic becomes a lektor.

At Copenhagen Business School , the salary for a professor with special responsibilities is 56,594 DKK per month, while at Aalborg University it ranges from 45,564 to 49,405. The average monthly salary for a professor with special responsibilities at the University of Copenhagen is 64,551 DKK.

Professors usually have a record of original scientific production at an international level. They are responsible for conducting research and research-based teaching and have experience in research management or innovation. This is a permanent, tenured position.

At Copenhagen Business School , the salary for a professor is 56,594 to 77,087 DKK per month, while at Aalborg University it ranges from 47,707 to 57,975. The average monthly salary for a professor at the University of Copenhagen is 80,465 DKK.

Study in Denmark

What is a PhD programme?

A PhD is usually a 3-year (180 ECTS) academic research degree. The components of the programme are:

  • Independent research under supervision
  • Courses for PhD students (approximately 30 ECTS credits)
  • Participation in research networks, including placements at other, primarily foreign, research institutions
  • Teaching or another form of knowledge dissemination, which is related to the PhD topic when possible.
  • The completion of a PhD thesis. The thesis can be a 200-page article or a collection of shorter research articles. The thesis is defended orally.

PhD programmes and courses are offered at Danish universities , which all offer excellent research, library and laboratory facilities for researchers and PhD students in addition to joint partnerships with industry.

PhD students are often encouraged to participate in research networks, including placements at overseas research institutions. A range of funding opportunities are available: Please visit the Researchers Mobility Portal for more information.

Who can apply?

As each institution in Denmark is responsible for its own admissions, requirements will vary. However, you will usually be required to have a recognised Masters degree in a relevant subject in order to be enrolled as a PhD student. Also, the applicants should also have good command of the English language.

For the students, who know that they want to pursue the researcher-path early on, the faculties have the option of starting a research degree directly after a bachelor’s. If this is the path you want to take, you can start a so-called 3+5 programme, which means starting your PhD and master's at the same time. Some faculties have a 4+4 programme where you can start your PhD after a year of master’s studies. The Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen offers these two programmes, for example. Each individual universitiy lays down its own rules regarding this type of hybrid PhD. An example of this is Aarhus University’s 4- and 5-year PhD scholarships .

What should I include in my application?

In Denmark you must apply for PhD programmes in writing via advertised projects and scholarships . Usually, you either apply for an opportunity with a pre-defined research topic, or you propose your own research ideas.

You also have to include a transcript of your grades for your bachelor’s and master’s degrees with documentation of your grades, and a CV.

How can I finance my PhD?

For students from the EU/EEA/Switzerland higher education in Denmark is free

You may be eligible for free tuition as an international student, provided you meet one of the following conditions:

  • You hold a permanent residence permit
  • You hold a temporary residence permit that can be upgraded to a permanent one
  • You hold a residence permit as the accompanying child of a non-EU/EEA holding a residence permit based on employment

All other students pay tuition fees. The fee is 50,000 DKK per year, i.e. 150,000 DKK for three years and is not postponed during any absence from the three-year PhD programme such as maternity/paternity leave, other leaves of absence or long-term illness.

The first rate is paid at enrolment, the second rate is paid in the first quarter of the calendar year following enrolment and the third rate is paid in the first quarter of the second calendar year following enrolment.

The grant provider must guarantee for the payment of the tuition fee for all three years when applying for enrolment.

The tuition fee covers

  • PhD courses included in the Graduate School’s course catalogue
  • PhD courses at other Danish universities and to some extent courses from other providers in Denmark or abroad
  • Expenses regarding stays at other research environments in Denmark or abroad
  • Activities in the graduate programmes
  • Assessments and defense of your PhD thesis

Therefore, you have to be able to finance both your degree and your living costs. You can do this in several different ways:

Industrial PhD

If you aim to conduct a research project with commercial perspectives, you can apply for an industrial PhD. You will be employed by a private sector company and at the same time enrolled as a PhD student at the Graduate School at a university.

As an industrial PhD student you will carry out research where results are applied in an enterprise setting. The cooperation between university and industry gives you access to new knowledge and innovation provided by the private sector company.

Application process for the industrial PhD

  • Start by finding a private sector company and a university supervisor for your PhD project.
  • The private sector company must send an application to Innovation Fund Denmark to apply for the industrial PhD grant on your behalf.
  • If successful, you can apply for enrolment at the Graduate School.

Visit the website of Innovation Fund Denmark to learn about application deadlines, requirements and how to proceed with your application.

How much can you expect to be paid as a PhD student?

If you are funded by a faculty  or a department, your salary is regulated by the Agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the Ministry of Finance (in Danish) (AC agreement). The average monthly salary for a PhD fellow at the University of Copenhagen is 32,567 DKK. After earning their doctorate , researchers go on to a postdoc which, in Denmark , can last up to four years at the same university.

PhD students employed at a hospital:

If you are employed at a hospital your salary follows the collective agreements in place at the Danish regions. In this agreement your employment depends on the degree you hold. Medical doctors are employed according to the collective agreement of the Danish Medical Association while other candidates are employed following the AC agreement. Contact your employer for more information.

Industrial PhD students employed by a private sector company

If you are employed as an industrial PhD student, your salary follows the collective agreement in place at your company. Contact your employer for more information.

Who gets accepted?

The head of the relevant PhD school decides which applicants will be accepted and enrolled into the programme – but of course it is not entirely at his/her own discretion. The applicants are selected based on a recommendation from the academic staff members on the faculty’s PhD committee.

As a PhD student you will be provided with a computer, office phone and an office, as well as general office supplies.

Please note:

  • The year of employment in Iceland, within the framework of the joint PhD programme between the University of Copenhagen and the University of Iceland, will take place in accordance with the Agreement between the Union of University Teachers and the Ministry of Finance of Iceland ( Félag háskólakennara ). Thus, your monthly salary will differ from the amount stated above.
  • If you are undertaking an industrial PhD programme, your salary may depend on the agreement you have with the company/public institution you have been employed by. For additional information, please contact PhD Administration .

Part-time study The PhD programme is usually undertaken on a fulltime basis with a prescribed period of study of three years. However, in special cases, following a request by the PhD student, permission may be granted for the PhD programme to be completed on a part-time basis. TALENT Doctoral Fellowship Programme

  • Talent Doctoral Fellowship Programme

The selected fellows will be offered an employment contract of three years, which covers the time it takes to complete the PhD. The offer is contingent on the fellows being enrolled in the 180 ECTS/three year PhD Programme at the Faculty of SCIENCE and on obtaining any permits pertaining to residence and work, which are mandatory by law.

The contract will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) in accordance with the Danish labour laws. Foreign employees will be treated equally with Danish employees and are covered by the same rules and regulations. These include social security benefits such as public health care, sickness benefit, occupational injury allowance, pregnancy benefit, parental benefit and pension.

Furthermore, the contract will contain information about salary and pension structure, holiday rights (a minimum of 25 days a year) and working hours (37 hours pr. week). The salary will be based on the terms of the applying collective agreement including basic salary, plus supplement based on the employee’s seniority and qualifications (if applicable), plus pension contribution. This means that the starting annual salary is currently at a minimum of EUR 43,973 (DKK 328,355), incl. annual supplement (+ annual pension contribution of minimum EUR 6,972 (DKK 52,061). The salary is susceptible to taxes but is a highly competitive salary for PhD students.

The Horizon 2020, Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND rules stipulate a minimum monthly salary of EUR 2,597 (EUR 31,164 pr. year), of which H2020/MSCA/COFUND covers EUR 1,855 (EUR 22,260 pr. year). (These amounts constitute the gross salary which means that taxes must be paid on it.) To sum up, SCIENCE complies fully with the H2020/MSCA/COFUND rules by offering the above-mentioned salary.

The TALENT Doctoral Programme is financing part of the salary (app. DKK 500,000 over the three years employment period), while the rest of the money for salary, lab work etc. in order to execute the project will have to come from department level (co-financing not possible from H2020).

If you have questions about the programme, please contact the TALENT secretariat at [email protected] .

The PhD program

The PhD program at the Department of Mathematical Sciences usually lasts 3 years. The typical entry level is a Master's Degree. The program consists first of all of an independent research project resulting in the end in a PhD thesis with publishable results.

It is also a part of the PhD program to follow a number of PhD courses totalling 30 ECTS, and our PhD students are expected to spend 3-6 months at a foreign research institution during the PhD program.

PhD students (except industrial PhD's) are required to teach, typically as teaching assistants. Our (advanced) courses are taught in English. Our PhD students must be able to teach in English and to follow courses taught in English.

A PhD degree in mathematics will make you qualified for a wide range of career possibilities including continuing an academic career or going into the private or the public sector.

PhD students who hold a stipend from the University of Copenhagen will receive a salary of about 3,300 EUR/month before taxes and 2,200 EUR/month after taxes. This stipend also includes a travel allowance for participation in conferences and for research visit(s) to foreign research institutions. The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers PhD degrees in pure and applied mathematics, statistics, insurance and financial mathematics within four research sections and two centres:

  • Algebra & Geometry
  • Analysis & Quantum
  • Insurance and Economics
  • Statistics and Probability
  • Copenhagen Centre for Geometry and Topology (GeoTop)
  • Centre for the Mathematics of Quantum Theory (QMATH)

The department currently has about 45 tenured faculty, 25 postdocs, and more than 40 PhD students.

Funding of PhD studies

Sources of funding, scholarships from the university of copenhagen.

Candidates can apply for a scholarship from the University of Copenhagen ( https://employment.ku.dk/phd/ ). These scholarships are advertised by the University and ordinarily cover both pay and other (approved) expenses incurred in connection with a student's PhD studies (supervision, courses, travelling, assessment etc.). PhD students in the 5+3 programme will receive salary  pursuant to the applicable rules of the University of Copenhagen and the Faculty as well as the relevant agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) ( link to the Danish Association of Lawyers and Economists, DJØF ). 4+4 PhD students receive two grant portions through the Danish State Education Grant and Loan Scheme each month for the first two year of the programme. Upon completion of the MSc degree the student transfers to the two year salary earning part of the programme. 3+5 students receive one grant portions through the Danish State Education Grant and Loan Scheme each month for the first two year of the programme, and two portions each month during the third year. By the end of these three years the student must complete your MSc degree, and transfer to the two year salary earning part of the programme, just like 4+4 PhD students. Other than this salary, the PhD student receives pay for the 840 work hour obligation during the studies.

External funding

If a candidate's studies are to be funded by external sources, an external partner (for example Danida, a government research institute or the like) must accept paying for the PhD study before the candidate is considered for enrolment. The terms of the enrolment, including the fee rate to be paid to the department, must be negotiated between the external partner and the department. You will find information about the the funding required in order to enrol under applications from candidates who receive external funding . PhD students whose studies are funded by external partners are not necessarily employed by the University of Copenhagen.

Industrial PhD

The industrial PhD programme is a separate PhD programme initiated by the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. The aim of the programme is to help researchers gain insight into in business-related aspects of research and development, to further the development potential of Danish business community and to establish networks through which knowledge can be disseminated between companies and research institutions in Denmark and abroad. PhD students who enrol in this programme are employed by the relevant company, but will be enrolled at the University like other PhD students

The Faculty's rules and obligations and general agreements on PhD salary

The PhD programme is subject to tuition fees. Every year, each faculty fixes and publishes tuition fees for the PhD programme. For very costly projects, the fee may deviate from that published. The Faculty may grant a full scholarship or a reduction of the tuition fees. When awarding PhD scholarships, the tuition fees are usually included in the scholarship.

The Faculty must ensure that the required resources are available to the PhD student in order that he/she may complete the PhD programme as laid down in the PHD student's study plan.

Employment as a PhD fellow shall occur pursuant to the applicable rules of the University of Copenhagen and the Faculty as well as the relevant agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) ( link to the Danish Association of Lawyers and Economists, DJØF ). Salary will be calculated on the basis of seniority. The following links will lead you to the salary scales, one including pension etc. (link to the Danish Association of Masters and PhDs ). The Danish Psychological Association also has a salary scale. These references, unfortunately, are only available in Danish.
