If the name Android Authority isn’t enough of a giveaway, we are huge fans of the Android operating system here. Fanboying aside, we have to admit that Android smartphones are far from perfect, and various issues pop up from time to time. While some are device-specific, some problems are caused by the OS itself. Here are some general problems that Android users face and potential solutions on how to fix them!

Editor’s note – We will be looking at some specific problems users face with Android 12. The steps below may also differ depending on your phone’s UI. However, all general troubleshooting tips will work for other versions as well.

Android problem #1 — Extremely rapid battery drain

Potential solutions:

• For quite a few users, a third-party app ended up being the cause. To see if that’s the case for you, boot the device in Safe Mode (you can find the instructions on how to do so below). Charge the phone to a point above the discharge percentage. Wait for the battery to drain until it gets below that number again. If the phone works as expected with no early shutdown, an app is behind the issue. Remove recently installed or updated apps until the problem goes away. If you can’t figure it out manually, you may need to perform a complete factory reset.
• It could also be a hardware issue for some due to the degradation of Li-ion batteries. This is more common if the phone is more than a year old or refurbished . The only option here is to contact the device manufacturer and try and get the phone repaired or the battery replaced.

Android problem #2 — The device doesn’t wake up when the power button is pressed

The “forced sleep” bug is quite common and has been a problem for numerous devices. When the screen is off, it doesn’t wake up when the power button is pressed. Instead, users have to press and hold the power button for ten seconds and force a restart.

• The forced restart will fix the problem, at least temporarily. However, this isn’t a long-term solution, and only an upcoming software update will permanently fix this issue. There are some workarounds, though.
• Some users have found that a screen protector, particularly of the tempered glass variety, causes the problem. Removing the screen protector helps but isn’t an ideal option.
• Enabling ” Always On Display ” on some phones with this feature helps fix it.
• De-activating the Active Edge feature on Pixel phones with the feature is a helpful workaround.
• Some phones let you change what the power button is used for and add extra functionality, like launching the Google Assistant. This could also be an issue with the settings. Go into the device settings and ensure that everything is how it should be.

Android problem #3 — SIM card isn’t detected

The SIM card isn’t being detected by the phone. Getting a replacement SIM card doesn’t help fix the problem.

• Simply rebooting the phone has worked for some users. In most cases, though, the issue seems to go away only for a few minutes.
• Some users have found that activating mobile data even when on a Wi-Fi connection helps fix the problem. Of course, this solution is great only for those with a good data plan, and you will have to stay on top of data usage if the Wi-Fi connection drops. You get charged for using data, so using this workaround without a data package isn’t recommended.
• There’s another workaround if you have a phone with an eSIM. Dial *#*#4636#*#* to open network settings. It might take a couple of attempts. Tap on Phone Information. In the network settings section, change the setting to one that works. Instead of trial and error, you can also find out the correct option by contacting your network carrier. If your phone supports dual SIMs, ensure that DSDS enabled is active.

Android problem #4 — Google app causing a lot of battery drain

Some users have found that the Google app is responsible for the bulk of battery usage on their devices. This is an issue that shows up quite frequently and across various phones. It seems to be an increasingly common problem with Android in recent years.

• Go to Settings–>Apps & notifications and open the list of apps. Scroll down to the Google app and tap on it. Tap on “Storage & cache” and clear both.
• In the previous menu, tap on “Mobile data & Wi-Fi.” You can disable “background data usage” and “unrestricted data usage” and enable “Disabled Wi-Fi” and “Disabled data usage.” This will affect app behavior, though, and the Google app and its features (like the Assistant) will not work as expected. Do these steps only if the battery drain makes the phone unusable.
• This problem seems to come and go with software updates. So if you are facing this issue, an upcoming app update will likely fix it.

Android problem #5 — Charging issues

People face a lot of problems when it comes to the cables and chargers that come with a phone. This can range from slow charging speeds to not being able to transfer files from a PC and more.

• This might just be a problem with the charging cable itself. Make sure it works by charging other phones or devices. If the cable doesn’t work with anything, you will have to get a new cable.
• These issues are particularly prevalent with USB-C to USB-C cables. Some have found that using a USB-C to USB-A cable instead solves the problem. Of course, if you’re charger uses the former, you’ll need to get an alternate to use the latter type of cable with.
• For quite a few users, cleaning the USB-C port seems to do the trick. Fold a business card and gently clean out the port with a sharp edge. You can also use compressed air as long as the pressure intensity isn’t too high.
• An app could also be causing these issues. Boot the device in Safe Mode and see if the problem persists. If not, an app is creating the problem.
• If nothing seems to work, the USB port of the phone might be damaged. The only option then is to get the device repaired or replaced.
• If your phone isn’t charging as fast as it’s supposed to, it could be a compatibility issue with the charger. Many manufacturers aren’t including chargers in the box anymore. It’s still best to buy a first-party charger to get the fastest charging speeds possible. Some OEMs like OnePlus and OPPO use proprietary fast charging.

If you find your phone running slowly, is laggy, or takes a long time to respond, there are a few general troubleshooting steps you can go through. A lot of the steps mentioned below can often help with battery drain issues as well. Performance and battery problems are seemingly always going to be a part of Android OS.

• Simply restarting your phone often does the trick.
• Make sure that the software is up to date. Go to Settings > System > Advanced > System update . Also, update all the apps you’ve downloaded from the Google Play Store.
• Check your phone’s storage. You might start seeing some slowdown when the amount of free storage is less than 10%.
• Check and ensure that third-party apps aren’t causing a problem by booting in Safe Mode and seeing if the problem persists.
• If you find a lot of apps running in the background and causing problems with battery life and performance, you might need to force stop them. Go to Settings > Apps & notifications and open the list of apps. Find the app and then tap on “Force Stop.”
• If nothing else works, performing a complete factory reset might be the only way to go.

Android problem #7 — Connectivity issues

You may occasionally come across connectivity problems with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. While some devices have specific Android problems when it comes to connectivity, below are a few general steps you can try out first.

Wi-Fi issues

• Turn the device and the router off for at least ten seconds, then turn them back on and retry the connection.
• Go to  Settings > Power saving and ensure that this option is turned off.
• Redo the Wi-Fi connection. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi , long press on the connection name, and tap on “Forget.” Now re-enter the details and try again.
• Make sure the Wi-Fi router firmware is up to date.
• Make sure the applications and software on the device are up to date.
• Go into  Wi-Fi > Settings > Advanced and make a note of your device’s MAC address, then make sure that it is allowed access in the router’s MAC filter.

• With issues when connecting to the car, check the manufacturer’s manual for the device and the car and reset your connections.
• Ensure that you are not missing a vital part of the connection process. Some Bluetooth devices have unique instructions.
• Go to  Settings > Bluetooth and ensure nothing needs changing.
• Go into Settings > Bluetooth and delete all prior pairings and try setting them up again from scratch. Don’t forget to also delete any devices on this list that you no longer connect to.
• When it comes to issues with multiple device connections, only a future update will be able to address this problem.

Android problem #8 — Android Auto problems

Complaints about connectivity issues with Android Auto are extremely common, particularly with new phones.

• Samsung, OnePlus, Google, and others make it very easy to set up a new phone while retaining the settings, apps, and files from the older device. However, if you use apps like OnePlus Switch or similar, it usually causes problems with Android Auto. Go to the Google Play Store, find Android Auto, uninstall it and install it again. Start the connection process from the beginning.
• The Android Auto app won’t be in your app drawer anymore. Instead, it is tucked away in your Settings menu. It’s located in different places depending on your phone, so the best option is to open Settings and search for Android Auto. Make sure that the settings are the way you want.
• A bad cable might be causing frequent disconnections. Use another cable to see if the problem goes away.
• If you use Android Auto Wireless, you might have trouble with the car recognizing your phone the first time. Users say that setting the initial connection with a cable and then using Android Auto Wireless after seems to do the trick.

Android problem #9 — Gesture navigation not working

Most phones running Android come with gesture navigation. However, users complain about gesture navigation freezing, being slow, or being unresponsive.

• Some users have found a simple workaround to fix this problem. Find the gesture navigation setting on your phone. On a Google phone, you can find it by going to  Settings–>System–>Gesture . Change it to the three-button navigation option. Restart the phone and then switch the setting back to gesture navigation.
• It might be a launcher issue, particularly if you use third-party launchers. Go to Settings–>Apps and notifications–>See all apps (the steps might be different). Find the launcher app, tap on Clear cache , and restart the phone.
• A rogue app might be causing problems with gesture navigation. Boot the phone into Safe Mode (the instructions are below) and check if the issue persists. If it doesn’t, then an app is the issue. Uninstall any recently installed or updated apps. If you can’t find the culprit, you might have to perform a factory reset.

Guide — Rebooting to Safe Mode, Factory Reset

We will be using the Pixel 6 as an example for the guides below. The steps might be slightly different, depending on the phone you have.

• If the phone is on, press and hold the power button. In the menu that opens, touch and hold the power off icon. Tap OK when a pop-up message asks for confirmation to boot into Safe Mode.
• If the phone is off, press and hold the phone’s power button until the loading animation starts. When it does, press and hold the volume down button. Keep holding the volume key until the animation ends, and the phone should start in Safe Mode. Look for the Safe Mode icon at the bottom left corner to confirm.
• Restart the phone when you want to exit Safe Mode.

Factory Reset

• If the phone is on, Go to Settings–>System–>Advanced–>Reset options . Tap on  Erase all data and then  Reset phone . Tap on  Erase everything to confirm.
• Press and hold the power and volume down buttons simultaneously for ten to fifteen seconds. If the phone restarts, you might need to start over.
• Use the volume keys to navigate to Recovery mode and press the power button to confirm.
• If you see  No command on the screen, press and hold the power button, then press the volume up button and release both.
• Use the volume keys to go to  Wipe data/factory reset and press the power button to confirm.

Android problem no. 2: subpar stamina, android problem no. 3: too much bloatware, android problem no. 4: a home screen mess, android problem no. 5: a slow-running phone, android problem no. 6: too much rotation, android problem no. 7: tiny text, android problem no. 8: annoying notifications, android problem no. 9: the contacts conundrum, android problem no. 10: call-ending challenges.

Confession time: I know embarrassingly little about car repair, and I couldn't fix a misbehaving house appliance if my life depended on it (which, on at least a couple occasions, it almost has). Heck, I can barely hang a piece of wall art without screwing something up along the way. When it comes to Android phones, though, well — I'm practically a modern-day mechanic.

Now, hang on a sec: It isn't nearly as impressive as it sounds. I don't have any fancy power tools or even a pair of cool-looking coveralls with my name on 'em (not yet, anyway). I've mostly just been using and studying Android for a long time now — since somewhere in the mid-1800s, give or take — and when you pay close enough attention to something for a long enough period, you start to see the same basic patterns popping up time and time again.

The truth is that for as "magical" as they may occasionally appear, our sleek and shiny smartphones are ultimately just appliances. And more often than not, the issues most folks have with their phones are pretty darn consistent. That means whether you're troubleshooting your own device or trying to come to a struggling co-worker's rescue, the odds are good that your problem can be addressed without too much trouble.

Consider this your guide — a collection of some of the most common complaints I hear about Android phones and the simplest solutions I suggest in those scenarios. Apply the knowledge to your own ailing device or pass it on to someone else who needs it, and you, too, can experience the joy of feeling like a mobile-tech mechanic (with or without the coveralls).

Ah, yes — the age-old problem of finite space. When you see a phone's storage starting to run low, just remember this catchy little adage: "Stop hoarding stuff, you unruly digital packrat." (Okay, so maybe it wasn't quite as catchy as I had hoped.)

In all seriousness, though, most of us really don't need much stored locally on our smartphones these days — especially on Android, where cloud syncing is simple and automated management is easy. Start by installing the Google Photos app and setting it up to back up all photos and videos as they're taken. That'll let you delete the local copies (as well as have a great way to get to all your memories from any device, anytime, even if you lose or break your current Android phone), and that alone is bound to free up tons of room.

Second, install the Files by Google app . It'll show you all the unnecessary space-takers lurking within your phone's storage — including those now-redundant local copies of cloud-synced images along with junk files, duplicate files, and other easily eliminated things — and it'll give you simple one-tap buttons to clear any of that crud away.

The Files by Google app identifies areas where you can free up space and gives you a quick 'n' easy way to zap unneeded items away.

Finally, if you're using one of Google's Pixel phones, look in the Storage section of your system settings and tap the line labeled "Smart Storage." There, you can configure your phone to automatically remove any redundant copies of already-backed-up photos and videos anytime your storage starts to get low again.

We could talk about Android battery life all day, but the fastest way to make an immediate difference in your phone's longevity is to adjust your screen settings.

First, turn down the screen's brightness (either in the Quick Settings panel that comes up when you swipe down twice from the top of your screen or in the Display section of your system settings). The display burns through more power than anything else on your device, and the lower you can comfortably use it, the longer your phone will last with each charge. If your phone is running Android 9 or higher, you can also look for an Adaptive Brightness option that'll automatically adjust the brightness level for you based on your current environment.

Second, set your "Screen timeout" setting (also in the Display section of your system settings) to as low of a value as you can tolerate. The less time your screen stays on when you aren't using it, the less unnecessary battery power your phone will burn through.

And third, if you've got Android 10 or higher, look in that same area of your system settings for the Dark Theme option. Darker colors tend to consume less power than the bright hues present in most interfaces by default, so switching to the Dark Theme either all the time or even just on a sunset-to-sunrise schedule should extend your phone's battery a fair bit.

Unless you're using Google's Pixel phones, your Android device likely came loaded with lots of junk you don't want — ranging from superfluous manufacturer-provided services (hi, Samsung!) to carrier-added crapola (to use the highly technical term). But fear not, for most of that can at the very least be hidden out of sight, if not eliminated entirely.

The simplest way to do that is to look in the Apps section of your system settings to find the complete list of installed applications. When you see an app that you don't want, tap its name and then look for either the Uninstall button — or, if that isn't present, the Disable command. You may not be able to get rid of absolutely everything that way (paging Bixby...), but you'll be able to clear out a fair amount of clutter.

From built-in search bars you don't use to silly news streams you'd rather not see, Android phones' home screens are often anything but optimal out of the box. But you don't have to live with what your device-maker gives you. Android has a huge array of third-party launchers — alternate environments that completely replace your phone's stock home screen setup and app drawer arrangement. And there's something available for practically every preference and style of working.

Just like us mortals, smartphones are prone to slowing down over time as their virtual wits become worn. Unlike our mushy mammal brains, though, your phone's response time can actually be improved.

Some of the things we just went over, in fact, should make a noticeable difference: cleaning up your storage, uninstalling unused apps (both ones that came pre-installed on your phone and ones you installed yourself but no longer use), and trying out a custom launcher for a more optimal home screen environment.

Beyond that, some of the same steps I describe in my Android data-saving guide can bring a meaningful boost to your overall device speed — things like eliminating unnecessary background activity, compressing your mobile web experience, and shifting to lightweight versions of apps. (See that article for a step-by-step breakdown in each of those areas.)

And finally, a tucked-away Android system setting may make the most perceptible impact of all. You'll first have to activate Android's developer settings on your phone to find it:

• Open the About Phone section of your system settings and look for the line labeled "Build number." (On Samsung phones, you'll have to tap a line labeled "Software information" before you'll see the "Build number" line.)
• Tap that line seven times.
• Enter your PIN, pattern, or password when prompted.

Once that's finished, go back to your main system settings menu. On some phones, you'll see a new Developer Options section right in that main menu; on others, such as Google's Pixel devices, you'll have to enter the System section and then tap "Advanced" to find it. However you get to it, tap that section and then scroll down until you see the Drawing header.

There, you'll find three animation-related options: "Window animation scale," "Transition animation scale," and "Animator duration scale." Tap each of those items and change its setting from the default "Animation scale 1x" to "Animation off." And don't mess with anything else in that Developer Options area while you're there; it contains some complex stuff that isn't meant for regular phone owners and could mess up your phone if used incorrectly.

Android's animation scale settings, hidden away in the system's Developer Options, can make any phone feel instantly faster.

Head back to your home screen and try moving around your phone — opening your app drawer, swiping down the notification panel, going in and out of apps, and so on. Everything should feel significantly snappier than it did before.

Our phones are designed to work in both a portrait and a landscape orientation — but sometimes, the sensors get a little oversensitive and end up flipping between views more often than you'd want.

As of Android 9, there's an easy answer: On a Pixel phone or any device whose manufacturer hasn't meddled with Android too much, march into the Display section of your system settings, tap "Advanced," and then flip the toggle next to "Auto-rotate screen" into the off position. From there on out, anytime you rotate your device, it won't automatically change the screen's orientation and will instead place a small icon in the corner of the screen. You can then tap that icon to change the rotation or ignore it to leave it as-is.

If you're using a Samsung phone, the feature curiously isn't in your system settings, but you can find a toggle for it in the Quick Settings area that comes up when you swipe down twice from the top of your phone. Look for the icon labeled "Auto rotate" and tap it once to disable it (which will change its title to "Portrait," somewhat confusingly — but that'll do the trick).

Stop squinting, would ya? If the words on your phone are too damn small, head into the Accessibility section of your system settings and try out two options: "Font size," which will increase text all throughout your phone, and "Display size," which will increase the size of everything on your screen.

Whether it's an overly aggressive app or, ahem, an overly aggressive texter, stop notification nuisances at their source by pressing and holding your finger to the next unwanted alert that pops up. That'll pull up a control panel of sorts that lets you turn off the associated type of notification entirely — or just silence it so that it still shows up but doesn't actively demand your attention.

Less annoying notifications are always just a long-press and a tap away.

It's 2020, for cryin' out loud. Your contacts shouldn't be accessible only on your phone — and you shouldn't have to jump through hoops to "transfer" them from one device to another.

If you're using a phone made by anyone other than Google, go into its Contacts app and make sure it's set to sync your info with your Google account — not with the manufacturer's own proprietary syncing service. This is especially pertinent for Samsung owners, as the company tends to sync contacts with its own self-contained service by default. That's fine if you only want to access that info from that one phone and if you only plan to purchase phones made by Samsung in the future, but in any other scenario, that setup is not going to serve you well.

In Samsung's Contacts app, tap the three-line menu icon in the upper-left corner, then tap "Manage contacts" followed by "Default storage location." Then, select your Google account instead of your Samsung account in the menu that comes up.

From that point forward, your contacts will be synced with Google Contacts — which means they'll always be available within the Google Contacts website , from any computer where you're signed in, and they'll be immediately available on any phone where you install the Google Contacts Android app .

Ever find yourself scrambling to end a call — but then your screen won't come back on fast enough? Or maybe the screen comes on, but the command to hang up isn't right there and ready? An Android accessibility option can make your life infinitely easier by empowering you to press your phone's physical power button anytime you're ready to say goodbye. No need to hunt around for the right icon or even look down at your phone at all — just one button press along the device's edge, and the person on the other end will be gone (thank goodness!).

Just look for the "Power button ends call" option in that Accessibility section of your system settings, flip it on, and get ready to get off a call more easily than ever.

If you dig around enough in Android's settings, you can find a switch that'll make it much easier to end a call.

Android problem No. 11: A frozen phone

One of the most frustrating Android problems of all is having a phone that's either stuck on some process and not responding or stuck in a powered-off state and refusing to turn on. But no matter how dire things may seem, there's almost certainly always a solution.

The simplest one is a hard reboot: Depending on your device, you'll want to press and hold either the power button by itself for 30 seconds to a minute — or press and hold the power button and volume-down button together for that same amount of time (or until you feel a vibration and see something show up on the screen). If you see a strange-looking menu that says "Start" and has a picture of an Android robot, don't worry: Just press the power button again, and your phone should boot up normally.

If nothing happens with either of those processes, try leaving your phone plugged in for a solid few hours, just to make sure the battery isn't depleted. Then try again.

If things still aren't coming up — and if you aren't seeing even the standard battery indicator graphic appear on the display when you plug the phone in — well, my friend, it's time to make your way to our final Android issue.

Android problem No. 12: A non-charging phone

Last but not least is the problem to end all Android problems: an Android phone that simply won't charge (and thus also won't power up, once its battery has been run all the way down). I've been there. And while it's certainly possible that you could be facing some sort of hardware-related defect, it's also quite likely that this is something you can fix in a jiff.

So try this: Take something like a toothpick or the end of a paper clip and very carefully and very gently dig around a little in the phone's charging port to clear out any lint or debris that's built up in there. It sounds crazy, I know, but sometimes, enough gunk gets collected in that area that the power cable isn't able to establish a good connection and charge the device (or charge it consistently, without the connection coming in and out and making it difficult for much charging to happen).

Once you've cleared out a good amount of gunk, plug the phone in again and see if something happens. If the battery was totally dead, you might have to leave it plugged in for a while before you see any results. But there's a decent chance this will work — and then, in a matter of minutes, you'll be back in business.

Sometimes, the simplest fix is the most satisfying one of all.

15 common Android problems and how to fix them

A guide for troubleshooting some of the most common and frustrating error messages seen on your Android device.

Let's face it, our phones aren't perfect. When they aren't running out of juice, they are slow, won't power on, or have problems connecting to the Internet.

These are some quick fixes for some of the most common problems Android owners face.

Battery drain

Numerous users have reported problems with the battery life of their devices. One of the easiest ways to prolong your smartphone's battery is to change your locations and brightness settings.

Enter the settings menu, click on Location, and select battery-saving mode. As for brightness, you should avoid using auto-brightness and instead turn your screen down somewhere below halfway, or to a level that is acceptable for your eyes.

Some phones, such as the Galaxy S5 and above, even include extra battery saving modes. For more tips, here are five ways to boost your Android's battery life right now .

Frozen and slow user interface

Phones typically begin to slow down as their internal storage fills up. Try deleting unused apps and photos, or moving them to the cloud or a microSD card. In addition, you should close open apps that you are no longer using, delete app cache, and limit the use of live wallpapers.

An app's cached data can be deleted by going to Settings > Apps , selecting a certain app, and choosing the Clear Cache option. Programs such as App Cache Cleaner and Clean Master , both of which are available for free from the Google Play store, can also be used to automate the process of clearing cache.

Connectivity issues

If you have are having a problem connecting to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or your cellular network, enable Airplane mode for 30 seconds, toggle it off, and try connecting again. Sometimes simply toggling the specific connection can also solve the problem.

Google Now problems

Google Now can be a bit finicky. The best thing to remember is to be very specific with your commands. It gets easily confused if you don't. Need a little more help? Here are 20 tips for getting the most out of Google Now .

Stalled text messages

Ensure that you are connected to the internet either through Wi-Fi or cellular, click on the unsent message, and click Resend . If the problem continues, try restarting your device or even installing a third-party messaging app.

​Overheating

Certain Androids, like the Droid Turbo, can get really warm. Try not to use your phone while you're charging it and don't use high CPU-sucking apps, like Pokemon Go or Facebook, for long periods of time. If it starts getting warm, give your phone a break.

If you don't do these things, and your phone still gets hot to the touch, then you may want to get it looked at by a professional. The experts I contacted said this could be a sign of a manufacture defect.

Syncing error

There are numerous steps you can take to address problems with syncing. First, ensure that you are connected to the internet, and that the service you are trying to sync with, such as Google or Dropbox, isn't down. Double check that your password is correct and try syncing again.

Still having problems? Remove the account from your device and add it again.

App crashes

Apps can crash for all sorts of reasons. Is there an update available for either the app or your phone? If so, install it. If not, force close the app by swiping it away in the multitask menu (pictured above) and then reopen it.

Unresponsive screen

You may want to throw your phone against the wall when it begins to malfunction, but there isn't a need to panic. Most problems are fixed with a simple restart. Although if you physically damaged your phone or dropped it in water, you may have bigger problems on your hands.

Press the power button and let the phone turn off, but wait a minute or two before powering it back on.

Google Play Store keeps crashing

The problem is probably a corrupt cache and all you need to do is clear it. Go to Settings> Applications> All Apps> Google Play Store> Storage and select Clear Cache. Restart your phone and the problem should be fixed.

Apps won't download

There may be two causes for your apps not downloading. First, go back to the last page on this list and try clearing Google Play store's cache. If that doesn't work, try wiping Google Play's history. The problem is probably a corrupt cache and all you need to do is clear it. Open the Google Play store and tap on the three lines in the upper left of the screen to open the app's menu. Choose Settings and tap on Clear local search history .

Bad autocorrect suggestions

If you use the default keyboard, you can get rid of autocorrect words you would never say or misspelled words that your keyboard has learned. All you need to do is long-press the suggestion and drag the word to the trash. Here's how .

Your kids make purchases

If your kids like to play with your phone and end up buying apps or in-game items, there's a simple solution. Go to the Google Play store, click on the three lines at the upper left-hand side of the screen to open the menu and tap on Settings . Then, tick the box for fingerprint authentication and choose For all purchases through Google Play on this device . With this setup, your fingerprint will be needed to make any purchases through Google Play.

Home screen clutter

Every time you get a new app, a new icon is added to your home screen, which kinda defeats the quick access to your favorite apps that a home screen is supposed to offer. Rick Broida found a fix to that: Open the Google Play app, then tap Menu > Settings and clear the check box next to Add icon to Home screen . Too many contacts

Hate that your phone makes every single person you've ever emailed though Gmail one of your phone contacts? Go to Settings > Account > Google . Toggle off the Contact option. Now your Gmail contacts won't sync with your phone.

Common Android 12 problems and how to fix them

Android 12 is here — or it is for many Android owners, at least. While some will have to wait a little while longer before they get their hands on it, many can now upgrade to the new operating system . Doing so will provide them with a wide range of useful and fun new features , from a revamped notification shade and  Material You to extra privacy controls and support for digital car keys. There's even a design refresh, giving Android an inviting new look involving bigger icons and bolder colors, all of which combine to make the system more engaging.

According to at least one user on Reddit , a bug in Google Messages was leaving the camera on in the background, quickly draining their phone's battery and causing overheating.

In April 2022, Google confirmed that it had identified the cause of this battery-draining bug and was rolling out a fix. If you're experiencing this, ensure that you have the latest update for Google Messages, which should hopefully resolve the problem.

A number of users on the Samsung Forums have complained that after updating to Android 12, they can no longer see their phone Contacts or Recent Call Log from their car when connected via Bluetooth. This means they can't use voice calling or redial recently called numbers.

Possible solution

This could be caused by the Bluetooth version settings on your phone. A suggested solution is listed below, but first you'll need to enable Developer options on your phone .

Step 1: Go to Settings , then select Developer options .

Step 2: Select Bluetooth PBAP , then choose Bluetooth BPAP version .

Step 3: Select PBAP 1.1 , then choose Apply .

Step 4: Re-select PBAP 1.2 and choose Apply .

If this solution doesn't work for you, it's worth reaching out to Samsung support for assistance.

A few users have complained that, after updating to Android 12, they can't launch Discord without their phones freezing and system UIs crashing. This certainly seems like a serious problem, particularly if you're someone who tends to use Discord frequently.

There is a simple fix, although you may need to repeat it each time you open Discord on your Pixel.

Step 1: Go to Discord.

Step 2: Select Settings , then choose Accessibility .

Step 3: Select Automatically play GIFs .

Despite the simplicity of this solution, one user who experienced this problem has also noted that they have to keep on switching off Automatically play GIFs each time they open Discord. As such, users probably won't be able to solve this issue for good until Discord launches a new update for its app or Google updates Android 12 (depending on which is the underlying source of the problem).

There’s a long thread in the Google Pixel subreddit that details how numerous users have encountered a bug where media (e.g. music) pauses randomly for no apparent reason. Such mishaps appear to be particularly common in Spotify and YouTube (as well as other media apps), so it’s likely to affect many users who have upgraded to Android 12.

There are two things you can try. First, you could try altering the battery settings of affected media apps.

Step 1: Click Settings , then select Apps .

Step 2: Choose All apps then select your media app.

Step 3: Select Battery , then choose Unrestricted .

Step 4: If this doesn't resolve things, you can also try clearing the storage and cache of any affected app by going to Settings then selecting Apps .

Step 5: Select See all apps .

Step 6: Choose Phone , then select Storage and cache (on some phones, this may just be Storage ), then choose Clear storage/cache .

Neither solution seems to have worked for most people. Because of this, your best bet remains to wait for an update for Android 12 to be made available. To check, go to Settings > System > System update . If an update is available, your phone will say so, and you’ll be able to update by tapping Download and install .

A number of users (especially of the Pixel 4a) have noticed that they’ve suffered from significant idle battery drain ever since updating to Android 12. In particular, the screen appears to use a disproportionate amount of power, with batteries running down by double-digit percentages overnight. It seems like this is an ongoing issue, with many Samsung users still reporting the problem in June 2022.

While owners of affected phones aren’t too sure of what exactly is going on here, the consensus seems to be that the always-on display — which has been redesigned for Android 12 — has become particularly hungry.

The only solution at the moment, unfortunately, is to switch off the always-on display. This should significantly reduce demands on your phone’s battery, at least while you wait for a more viable solution via an update. Here's how to do that:

Step 1: Go to Settings .

Step 2: Select Lock screen .

Step 3: Choose Always show time and info . On some phones, this may be Always on display , and you'll need to ensure it's toggled off.

Step 4: If this doesn’t make a real difference to battery drain issues, you could also try turning on Adaptive Battery:

Go to Settings and select Battery .

Step 5: Choose Adaptive preferences then select Adaptive battery .

Alternatively, if you’re experiencing excessive battery drain with Adaptive Battery active, you may want to try turning it off and seeing how that works.

Step 6: You could also try one of the following solutions:

• Try turning on Battery Saver. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery saver > Use battery saver . Alternatively, you can choose Set a schedule to activate Battery Saver based on certain conditions, such as your routine or a percentage.
• It may also be worth setting individual restrictions on battery usage for particular apps. Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps . Next, pick any apps that may be or are draining your battery and then go to Battery . Lastly, select Restricted (or select Optimized if you suspect that Restricted settings may be a drain on your battery). Repeat for as many apps as required. (Also, you can check which apps are using battery by going to Settings > Battery > Battery usage .)

A number of Android 12 users have reported that they can’t use the Starbucks app on their phones. They launch the app and receive a message saying, “A system error has occurred. Please try again later”. Some users have even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but this still results in the same issue for anyone running Android 12.

It looks like Starbucks has now fixed the problem, so ensure you update your Starbucks app to the latest version, and this should resolve things.

A couple of posters to the Google forum have said that their Google Assistant alarm routines stopped working properly after they updated to Android 12. It seems that the update, for whatever reason(s), interferes with or interrupts the usual unfolding of the routine. For instance, if you’ve set a routine such that music plays after you hit Snooze or Stop on the alarm, you will now find that music doesn’t play, and so on.

Sadly, there appears to be no direct solution for this problem. Originally, it was thought it would be fixed by an Android 12 update that rolled out in November. However, many users reported the problem was only fixed briefly after the update, then began reoccurring. As such, if this is still a problem for you, you'll have to sit tight and wait for a future update to resolve things.

At least one user has noted that they can’t answer calls after updating to Android 12. This is because, when their phone begins ringing, it won’t register or respond to the user’s touches on the display, making answering impossible.

There’s no obvious reason why this is happening or why it’s only the Phone app that’s affected.

Possible solutions

Fortunately, other users have suggested a few potential fixes. First, you could try resetting the Phone app's user data. Here's how to do that:

Step 1: Go to Settings then select Apps .

Step 2: Choose See all apps , then select Phone .

Step 3: Choose Storage and cache and select Clear storage . You can also select Clear cache on this same screen.

Step 4: You can also try resetting app preferences. To do this, go to Settings and select System .

Step 5: Now, choose Reset options and select Reset app preferences .

If you’re a developer (or a more tech-savvy user) and have bootloader unlocked on your phone, you can also try flashing a full OTA update via ADB from Recovery mode. Explaining how to do this is beyond the scope of this article, and it’s recommended only if you’ve done it before. Otherwise, you should just wait for a normal update to be publicly available and install that.

Most common Android problems and how to fix them

Updated on 06-06-2022 – Android is a reliable and stable operating system, but oftentimes, issues might arise: The Play Store no longer offers updates, the WiFi has no connection, the memory is full, apps are crashing? We have listed below some of the most common Android problems and how to solve them quickly and efficiently. Let’s get started.

1. Android battery life

The power and technology of smartphones and tablets grows every day, but the power of today’s batteries has yet to keep up with this evolution. This results in batteries that last a very short time, some not even lasting a day.

This is probably one of the most annoying Android problems for users since it basically affects the way they use their devices.

2. Connection

Out of nowhere, you may have problems with different types of connections: Wi-Fi, your cellular network or the Bluetooth signal.

Most of the time there is no need to turn the device on and off, just activate the airplane mode for a few moments. When you disable it, it is very likely that the connections will come back up again. If the problem persists, try to restart the device.

3. Applications crashing

Your favorite app crashes, gets stuck or doesn’t even start? If it happens for the first time that the app has hung up or can no longer be opened, restarting the smartphone often helps. If the problem recurs, check the Google Play Store to find out whether an update is available for the application, as the manufacturers are often already aware of the problems. If this is not the case, try emptying the app cache. You can do this under “Settings -> Options -> Application manager”. Select the relevant app here and tap on it. Under the item “Cache” you will find the button “Empty cache”. If the problems occurred due to insufficient storage space, the app will now work again. However, this is only a short-term solution because the cache will fill up with application data over time. If this approach does not fix the problem permanently, delete the entire app data in the application manager. However, all data that was saved in combination with this application on your smartphone will be lost. If none of these measures lead to success, all that remains is to uninstall and reinstall the application

4. Your device turns off and does not come back on

Sometimes your phone may go a little crazy and turns itself off. This might be due to your device becoming hot or your battery has completely drained. But when you press the button to turn it on and it shows no sign of life, you can’t help but be worried.

When the battery is completely depleted, it is normal that it takes a few minutes for the device to turn on again once you hook it up to the charger.

If the problem persists or if it is not even a problem with the battery, do the following: Hold down the Power button and the volume down button for a few seconds. Generally, this combination allows you to take pictures of your Android’s screen, but when it’s off, these buttons would force Android to show you some boot options.

You can see the options by pressing the volume buttons, but we recommend that you simply stick to the option that appears first (usually a large “Start” written in green) and press the power button to select it. Your Android will be forced to work.

5. System sluggishness and crash

Over time, old versions of Android naturally become slower. In this case, the best thing to do is to check if there is support for updating to a newer version, but if not, there are some tips that may help.

It is a good practice not to leave files accumulating on your SD card or internal memory for no reason, such as photos or videos that can otherwise be stored on your computer or in a cloud storage service. Make sure to close applications after using them, or they will continue to use your device’s processor which might affect the performance.

Finally, go to your settings and look for the “Applications” tab. There you can uninstall what you no longer use or clear the cache of your applications. This will speed up your device.

6. Google Play not working

Sometimes when you try to open Google Play to see new apps or updates, you will suddenly see the online store closing on its own! This is one of the common Android problems that affect basically all its versions, but it can be solved in a simple way :

Go to your settings and look for the “Apps” tab. You’ll see a list of your installed apps, including the Google Play app. Click on it and choose the option “Clear cache”. Now, just restart your device and the Google store should be up and running again.

7. Google Play doesn’t download the apps you want

Since we are discussing Google Play, it is worth addressing the problem of the store not downloading the applications you have selected. This is extremely annoying, but also easy to fix. First, do exactly what we said in the previous issue and clear your Google Play cache.

Restart your device and if the problem persists, simply delete your download history within Google Play itself.

8. Google Play disappeared

Don’t worry, you didn’t accidentally delete the most important app of Google. This is even impossible to do if you have not rooted your device. If Google Play has disappeared, chances are you’ve disabled it.

To solve this, go to the “Apps” tab in your settings and search for Google Play again. In the options that appear, you will see the “Enable” button (or “Disable”, as it should always be by default) if this is the problem. In this case, just click on it and everything should function normally.

9. How to clear RAM in android

This is quite common when installing multiple applications. The more apps there are, the more RAM memory will be used on your device the slower it will be. This happens even when several apps are running in the background, especially those you don’t even notice.

The first tip would be not to trust programs that claim to eliminate apps in the background (known as Task Killers), as they will only hinder the performance of apps that really need to be running in the background. The best thing to do to free up RAM , is to review what you really use and don’t use and uninstall useless applications.

10. My downloads are not complete

Sometimes when you launch some downloads, you will realize later on that none have finished or that they simply raised an error. This is usually a problem caused by the download manager of Android itself and that can be solved by simply clearing the cache again.

Go to the tab with your apps in “Settings” and look for the “Downloads” app. Clear your cache and restart your device. Your downloads should return to normal shortly afterwards.

11. Cannot open my downloads 

Everything that is downloaded via Android (not counting apps from Google Play, which are installed immediately) is stored by default in a system folder called “Downloads”. Nothing simpler, right? This is one of the common Android problems that happened in its most recent versions, the system simply no longer has a file manager.

This means that if it depends on Google, you will have no access to the Android folders inside the device itself, only when it is connected to a PC. Fortunately, there are many applications that can manage and explore your folders and files. If you want a recommendation, you can download the ES File manager Android app .

12. Problems playing videos

If your native Android player is unable to play a video that you have downloaded, we recommend that you download and install a different player that is compatible with different formats, check out for instance the MX Player ( download it from this link ).

13. Malware has been installed

The nightmare of any Android user is to install malware by accident. This might happen since Google Play is not the most supervised store in the world. What we can advise is that you always look at the comments made by other users and never install the promised pirated games and applications that are spread over the internet.

A major problem with this situation is that it is not very simple to identify if there is really Malware installed on your smartphone, except with the use of applications aimed at this .

14. The SD card is no longer being recognized

You can even format your SD card on the Android device itself, by going to the “Storage” tab and choosing the “Format SD Card” option. This should solve any problem, but if not, your card may not be working properly anyway.

Believe it or not, this is one of the most common Android problems that is probably being caused by your router and not because of Android. To find out, make sure that other devices (such as notebook computers, video games, etc.) are able to connect correctly to Wi-Fi and that the internet is working smoothly.

If this is the case, the problem may be the direct connection between the router and your Android device specifically which can happen far more commonly than you think. Try turning the router off for a few minutes and see if the signal works again.

This usually resolves everything, but if the problem persists, delete the router information in the Wi-Fi settings on your device and restart it. Then, just select the desired Wi-Fi network and enter your router’s security password as if you were connecting for the first time.

16. Bluetooth or cell phone network does not work

Other connection problems can occur with Bluetooth or your cellular network, which may simply stop working. Restarting the phone can be a quick way to solve it, but if it doesn’t work, just activate the “Airplane Mode” of the device for a few minutes. When you turn it off, everything should be back to normal.

Nothing is more irritating than seeing your text messages not being sent for any reason. Usually, the problem is with your own cellular network, but there is something to try if you suspect that the problem is with your device. Try airplane mode, as we talked about in the previous topic and if it doesn’t work, try to download a different application to send your messages.

18. App sync issues

Many applications, such as Google Drive or Dropbox, use sync to keep up with content that may have been added on your computer or internet browser. The problem is when this synchronization starts to fail.

Usually, this is another of the common Android problems that have to do with your Wi-Fi connection, but if everything is working perfectly, it is likely that the error is from the app itself. Check Google Play to see if the app in question has any new updates. If not, uninstall the app and try to install it again to resolve the issue.

19. The touch screen does not respond to commands

What can be worse than a touch screen that doesn’t respond to your touch commands? This can be due to a more serious problem if your device has been soaked in water or even coffee or if it has fallen. Check out your nearest technical assistance center.

In the event of water damage, acting quickly and correctly can save the device. First, remove the device’s battery and any other detachable parts. Then put it with the mobile phone to dry in a warm place and wait about 24 hours. For example, you can wrap the parts in a towel and place them on the heater.

Never use a hair dryer to dry it. This could force droplets of water further inside the device. It is important that all parts are completely dry before reassembling the smartphone

20. My phone died and wont turn on or charge

An Android phone not charging is quite common actually. The first thing to do in this scenario is to check whether your phone can be charged with other chargers or if it charges when it is connected to your PC via USB.

The problem is usually with the cable of your usual charger, which may already be worn off. If so, replace the charger with a quality one (not necessarily one from your cell phone manufacturer). If the problem persists it is best to take the device for service.

Unfortunately, as these files accumulate, they may corrupt over time causing the camera app to crash. It's, therefore, a good idea to clear your cache regularly to maintain the best system performance. For that reason, head into Settings, Apps, Camera, and Storage. There should now be an option to Clear cache and Clear data; select both if possible.
• Check for software updates: If you're using the built-in camera app on Android, there may not be an option to update it via the regular Google Play Store. Instead, the camera app crash fix may be found in a regular Android software update. To check whether your phone and possibly camera app is due for an update, open Settings, Software update, and select the Download and Install option if it's available. You can read the patch notes that follow to confirm whether any fixes have been applied to the camera app.

The Camera Flash Isn't Working

The flashlight located on your Android smartphone doubles as a camera flash for low-light conditions. This burst of artificial light illuminates the focal area, making it easier to capture a clear image. Unfortunately, the flash might not always work as it should, resulting in photos that are dark and grainy.

Here's how to fix a camera flash that isn't working:

• Check the flash settings in your camera app: As silly as it sounds, your camera's flash might not be enabled. To ensure it is turned on, look for a lightning bolt or flash symbol that is on the top or bottom of your camera app HUD. A line through the middle of the symbol generally means the flash is turned off, whereas a plain symbol indicates it is on. There's also an auto-flash option which is marked by an "A" next to the flash symbol. Select the normal flash symbol if you want the feature turned on permanently.
• Check the battery status: To conserve battery life, some Android phones will not allow you to use the camera flash until the device has been charged to a certain level. This is often found in a prompt within the camera app that states the battery is too low to use the flash. The remedy is therefore an easy one, simply charge your smartphone.
• Ensure that the flash is not obstructed: There may be a slight chance that you have unintentionally blocked the flash with an unsupported case cover or your very own finger. This often happens with third-party case covers that aren't meant for your exact phone model. Check if the flash is visible, and buy an approved phone cover if necessary.

Photos Are Not Saving

Once you have taken a photo using your camera app, the file is usually stored in your gallery. These apps work simultaneously with one another, and if problems arise, an effect is felt through both applications. A common hiccup you may face is when your photos fail to save in your gallery. The camera app might seem perfectly fine, but you'll be unable to locate your new snapshots. The reason behind this affair is more than often a storage space issue .

Here's how to fix photos that are not saving:

• Check your storage space: The first thing you'll want to do is investigate how much storage space your Android phone has. This will confirm that it is indeed a storage issue and not an underlining app dilemma. You can see your storage space by going into your Settings and selecting Storage. Your phone will now calculate the storage distribution and state whether you have run out of space.
• Create more storage space: Once you've established your phone no longer has enough storage space, you can increase the limit by deleting any unnecessary files, inserting an additional memory card, or moving your current files to cloud storage. When your chosen option has freed up space within your gallery, your photos should now start saving again.
• Third-party apps: If you're using a third-party app to view your camera photos (not including the pre-installed gallery app), the issue might be with the app alone. In other words, your photos might be available if you look within your Pictures Folder located in Files or My Files. Should this be the case, re-install the third-party app and see if it recognizes your photos again. If not, try another gallery app or used the built-in one.

The Camera App Responds Slowly

A camera app that responds slowly is different from a crashing issue. Overall functionality is delayed , with input commands lagging, yet the camera app itself remains open. This can be provoking if people are waiting for you to take a photo, or even more so when your Android device freezes entirely.

Here's how to fix a camera app that responds slowly:

• Close background apps: If your phone has limited specs, it may be reaching its performance threshold should multiple apps be running in the background. To improve system responsiveness, and free up memory, you should close the apps that are not being utilized. Depending on your phone model, swipe up from the Home screen, select the Recent Apps buttons, and close the necessary background apps. When you're ready, open the camera app and see if the problem has been resolved.
• Free up storage space and update your system: While your Android phone fills up with different applications and media files, the storage space will diminish over time. This might lead to an overall drop in performance, as system updates will no longer install, with your camera app being more susceptible to bugs. Therefore, head into Settings, followed by Storage, and see if you have enough space. Next, open Setting again, and select Software update. Download and install any patches that may be available.
• Turn off Power Saver mode: Power Saver or Power Saving mode reduces the CPU speed and brightness of your Android device to increase its battery life. Unfortunately, this may result in a drop in performance, leading to stuttering and lag throughout certain apps, including your camera. To check if this feature has been enabled, open Settings, Battery, and scroll down until you find Power Saver mode.

Blurry Or Out-Of-Focus Photos

Nothing is worse than a photo that comes out blurry or out-of-focus. The lack of detail and clarity makes it difficult to discern what is going on, which is especially disappointing if your Android smartphone has a premium camera lens. Technical specifications and physical condition aside, the issue may reside within your app Settings or the stability of your photo shoot.

Here's how to fix blurry or out-of-focus photos:

• Tap to focus: By default, your phone's camera is usually automated, which means it tries its utmost to stabilize the lens in a way that produces the best possible photo with minimal effort on your side. Sometimes, however, things can go wrong, and the phone will struggle to pick up on a focal point. To ensure your lens always centers correctly and avoids blurriness, tap the camera display, and wait for a box or circle to appear around your chosen subject. Finally, take the photo and see if the quality improves.
• Choose the correct mode: Most android phones have multiple shooting modes. But, not all of them will work for what you're trying to photograph. For example, portrait mode might take a great close-up picture, but it isn't recommended for landscape images. Therefore, learn which camera modes are recommended for each style of photography and apply them for the best possible results.
• Use a tripod: You might not realize this, but your hand might shake more than you think. Whether it's nerves or a particularly sensitive camera lens, your phone might need an extra layer of stability. A camera tripod is a great way to brace and steady your photo shoots. It allows the auto-focus to do what it does best while removing the risk of accidental movement.

Poor Video Quality

Android phones generally use the same lens to take photos and record videos. These include newer smartphones with multiple camera modules, which support different fields of view and focal lengths for both photos and videos. Since the two are intertwined it's no surprise that video quality can suffer, resulting in a film that not only lacks detail but is also distorted.

Here's how to fix poor video quality:

• Use a higher resolution: When recording a video, you should always try to use the highest resolution available. This is because more pixels result in more detail, which outputs a sharper film image. You can find your video resolution settings inside the camera app. It should be available when you select video mode on the HUD, or within the Settings Menu usually shown via a gear symbol.
• Turn off any unnecessary filters: Filters are a great way to add a spark to videos or improve lighting conditions. Unfortunately, they aren't always optimized and may degrade the quality of your video. Try removing any filters that might be adding a grainy effect to your recordings and see if the quality improves. This issue will be most notable on third-party apps making use of your camera if your basic camera app does not exhibit the same problem.
• Clean the lens of your camera: If your photos and videos both seem to have a cloudy appearance, there may be dirt on the lens. Grab a soft microfiber cloth and gently wipe the lens to remove any oil or grime buildup. It should be noted here that there are special lens wipes available online, but you should always avoid harsh cleaners that could potentially damage your phone. Therefore, consult trusted reviews if necessary and choose a leading brand.

Video Recordings Have No Sound

A film without sound lacks context and engagement. For that reason, a somewhat rare, but certainly annoying issue that may arise while capturing a video is when your phone decides to cut out the audio. Even worse, is that you'll likely not know that your phone has failed to record sound until it's too late and you're back at home.

Here's how to fix video recordings that have no sound:

• Allow microphone permissions: Your camera app might not have permission to use your built-in microphone to record audio. To remedy this, go into your phone Settings, scroll down to apps, and look for the camera or video recording app. Now, select the app, and tap Permissions. There should be an option to enable your microphone while using the app.
• Turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any audio devices: Most wireless devices these days connect automatically. As a consequence, your phone might be connected to an audio device without your knowledge, which could be using the microphone. Head into your Settings, and turn off Bluetooth. Your video recording app should now have full use of your phone's built-in microphone.
• Update and restart your phone: If the issue persists, it may be a bug, which needs to be fixed via a software update. Open Settings, select Software update, and tap the Download and Install option if it's available. If no update is available, try restarting your phone by holding down the Power/Lock Button. This may resolve any once-off complications.
• Check if the microphone is covered: Depending on where the microphone is located on your phone, it might be covered, preventing it from capturing audio. Therefore, check that your hand or phone cover isn't blocking the microphone when you try to record a video.

Overheating During Camera Use

Overheating occurs in warmer conditions or during resource-intensive tasks over a long period of time, for example, using your camera app continuously. A phone that overheats is not only physically uncomfortable but also leads to a drop in system performance. This is because as the processor inside gets hotter, the phone will try to cool itself down by lowering its power usage, which coincidentally leads to apps (and your camera) responding slower. As a last-ditch effort, your phone may even turn itself off to prevent damage!

Here's how to fix a phone that overheats while using the camera:

• Avoid using the camera while charging your phone: Phones that support fast charging or super fast charging use a higher voltage and current, which generates more heat. If you then open up the camera app, the processor will activate making things even warmer. On that account, wait until your phone has been removed from its charger before using the camera.
• Prolonged camera use: Most modern smartphones shouldn't overheat if used in the recommended conditions. However, if you find yourself in a very warm climate, using a resource-intensive app such as your camera might cause the temperature of your phone to rise. If you can't move to a cooler area, try decreasing the screen brightness of your phone and lowering the resolution of your camera. This will reduce the system demand on your CPU.
• Remove your phone case: If your phone case is made from a material such as leather, it might be insulating your phone and keeping the heat inside. Add in prolonged camera use and a hot summer day, and it might be enough for your phone to overheat. Therefore, remove the case and see if the heat subsides.  

Photos Are Too Bright Or Too Dark

Occasionally, you may notice that the photos you take are too bright or too dark. This is likely due to an exposure issue, which more than often originates from lighting conditions or incorrect camera settings. It's important to know the techniques you can follow if you cannot change the lighting, and want to prevent this from happening in the future.

Here's how to fix photos that are too bright or too dark:

• Exposure compensation: Most android camera apps have an exposure compensation slider. You can access this feature by tapping the area you want the camera to focus on and moving the exposure compensation icon up or down to adjust the image. Note that depending on the model of your smartphone, the exposure compensation slider might have a "brightness" icon, which is the same feature. You'll notice the camera preview going lighter or darker as you adjust it to your preference.
• HDR Mode: If your phone supports HDR (high dynamic range), you can use this feature to take multiple photos at different exposure levels, creating a final image that has the best possible brightness and contrast. The steps to enable HDR can vary per Android make and model, but you'll usually find it within the Camera app's Settings or Shooting Mode. You can then take the photo as you usually would, and HDR will do the rest.
• Change the filter: Certain camera filters are used precisely for bad lighting conditions. If your photos are too bright, you can try a neutral-density filter, which reduces the amount of light that can enter the lens. On the other hand, if your photos are too dark, you can always try Night Mode if you want to keep the flash off.

Red Eye In Flash Photos

The red-eye effect occurs when the flash of your phone reflects off the retina of the person you're taking a photograph of. This can spoil a good picture, as the eyes will then emit an orange or red glow when looking back at the photograph. While not as common, thanks to advancements in camera technology, the problem may surface in certain lighting conditions.

Here's how to fix red eye in flash photos:

• Avoid the flash: The easiest way to remove the red-eye effect from your photos is to avoid using the flash altogether. Use natural lighting wherever possible, and make sure your flash is not set to Always On. With that said, if you have no choice, try using the flash from a further distance, or at an angle that avoids direct contact with the subject's pupil.
• Enable the red-eye reduction setting: Modern Android smartphones usually have an automatic red-eye removal function that is integrated into the camera's flash setting. With that said, if you find the red-eye issue continuously showing up in your photographs, you may have to check whether this setting has been added as an independent feature. Therefore, when your camera app is open look for a red-eye reduction mode within your settings and filters.
• Edit the photo: As a final resort, you can edit the red-eye effect out of your photograph using an editing app . These are usually found on the Google Play Store, or even within your built-in camera app. In most cases, there will be a red-eye removal option or a filter that can help balance color and tone to minimize any orange or red glow.

Each year since 1959, high school math students from more than 100 countries have competed to solve a wide variety of math problems involving algebra , geometry , and number theory quickly and elegantly. Many IMO winners have secured prestigious math awards as adults, including the coveted Fields Medal .

In essence, IMO is a benchmark for students to see if they have what it takes to succeed in the field of mathematics. Now, artificial intelligence has aced the test—well, the geometry part at least.

In a paper published this January in Nature , a team of scientists from Google’s DeepMind have introduced a new AI called AlphaGeometry that’s capable of passing the geometry section of the International Math Olympiad without relying on human examples.

“We’ve made a lot of progress with models like ChatGPT … but when it comes to mathematical problems, these [large language models] essentially score zero,” Thang Luong , Ph.D., a senior staff research scientist at Google DeepMind and a senior author of the AlphaGeometry paper, tells Popular Mechanics . “When you ask [math] questions, the model will give you what looks like an answer, but [it actually] doesn’t make sense.”

For example, things get messy when AI tries to solve an algebraic word problem or a combinatorics problem that asks it to find the number of permutations (or versions) of a number sequence.

To answer math questions of this caliber , AlphaGeometry relies on a combination of symbolic AI—which Luong describes as being precise but slow—and a neural network more similar to large language models (LLMs) that is responsible for the quick, creative side of problem-solving.

Yet, math experts aren’t convinced that an AI made to solve high school-level math problems is ready to take off the training wheels and tackle more difficult subjects, e.g. advanced number theory or combinatorics, let alone boundary-pushing math research.

Why AI Struggles With Math

While LLM-powered AI tools have exploded in the past two years, these models have routinely struggled to handle math problems. This is part of what makes AlphaGeometry stand out from the crowd. But even so, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s ready to tackle higher-level math yet.

Marijin Heule , Ph.D., is an associate professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University whose work focuses on another kind of automated theorem prover called SAT solvers. In this case, “SAT” refers to a measure of validity called “satisfiability” and not the math section of the high school SAT.

“When it comes down to solving math problems or problems in general, the challenge of AI is that [it] cannot come up with new concepts,” Heule tells Popular Mechanics .

This limitation impacts symbolic AI and neural networks in different ways, Heule explains, but both stem from the issue that these AI rely on an existing bank of human knowledge. However, this isn’t exactly true for AlphaGeometry because it relies on synthetic data , which isn’t based on human examples but is made to mimic them.

While AIs might not be effective mathematicians on their own, that doesn’t necessarily mean they can’t be great apprentices to human mathematicians.

“At least for the foreseeable future, [AI will] be mostly assisting,” Heule says. “One of the other things that these machines can do really well is they can tell you if there is an incorrect argument and [offer] a counterexample.”

These AI-powered nudges can help researchers distinguish research dead-ends from promising paths.

Why Geometry?

Of all the math fields the AlphaGeometry team could have tackled, Luong says there were a few factors that helped them zero in on geometry .

“I think geometry is visually appealing [and] we do geometry as kids,” he says. “And geometry is everywhere in design and architecture, so it’s very important.”

Geometry also offered a unique challenge as being one of the International Math Olympiad fields with the fewest number of proof examples written in a computer-friendly format (e.g. without pictures).

While Heule agrees that AlphaGeometry is “really cool work,” he admits that designing a geometry solver is one of the easier tasks for a math AI.

While human computer scientists did work behind the scenes to formalize geometry problems in a way that computers can reason about, Heule says the reasoning is pretty straightforward once that preparation work is complete.

In part, this is because the considerations of geometry problems (e.g. the relationship between angles, points, and lines) are fairly contained compared to more complex areas, he says.

Take for example Fermat’s Last Theorem . This number theory problem took over three centuries to solve, and Heule says it would be extremely difficult to explain its solution to AI, let alone ask AI to solve it.

“Large-scale fields of modern mathematics … are so big that any one of them contains multitudes,” says Heather Macbeth , Ph.D., an assistant professor of mathematics at Fordham University with a focus on geometry. “I think, maybe a more precise question would be to talk about the styles of problems, which might occur within any mathematical field that some of these AI systems are useful for,” she tells Popular Mechanics.

For example, AI could be useful for pattern recognition or so-called needle-in-a-haystack problems where mathematicians are looking for something with a very particular property, Macbeth says.

Toward General AI

While AI likely won’t be solving centuries-old math problems in the near future, Luong is confident there are still existing advancements on the horizon for AlphaGeometry and its ilk. Perhaps these models could even graduate high school and take on the Putnam Mathematical Competition for undergraduate students.

But beyond math tests themselves, Luong is hopeful about what models like AlphaGeometry could mean for the field of AI at large—in particular, researchers’ goals of designing a generalized AI.

“If we want to talk about building an artificial general intelligence, where we want the AI to be as smart as a human, I think the AI needs to be able to perform deep reasoning,” Luong says. “This means that the AI needs to be able to plan ahead for many, many steps [and] see the big picture of how things connect together … the IMO is the perfect test for that.”

Trenton's e-bike insurance bill is an absolute mess for NJ. Legislators should scrap it

Every once in a while, legislation in Trenton catches the public’s attention for all the wrong reasons. 

While it would be preferable to think our elected legislators are working to craft thoughtful laws that benefit everyday New Jerseyans, some bills are introduced and pushed through the state house that are too narrowly focused and it’s unclear what the objective is. Such is the case with New Jersey state Senate Bill S2292. 

This bill would require all low-speed e-bikes and scooters to be insured and registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles the same way cars are today. 

Full disclosure: I am in the business of selling and fixing bicycles, and this legislation would negatively impact anyone in the business of selling and repairing bicycles. While this proposal might be a personal headache for me, that is not why state lawmakers should reject it. The bill in its current form, doesn’t appear to have any benefit for anyone, with the possible exception of trial lawyers.

Put simply, this bill is an absolute mess. The key question regarding any proposed legislation is: why? What is the objective here, and what public policy problem is it trying to solve? Currently, pedestrians and traditional bicycles are covered by no-fault insurance, but low-speed e-bikes and scooters are not. They fall into a gray area that makes personal injury cases difficult to litigate. So why do we need new legislation to address this when simply amending the current statutes for no fault auto insurance would easily solve the problem?

This “solution” would open the door to an entirely new category of lawsuits. It would allow individuals to sue for damages over even minor accidents involving low-speed e-bikes and scooters. This in turn would generate a stream of new income for personal injury firms, but is that what we really need? This kind of brazen political maneuvering may not be shocking by New Jersey standards, but it should be. 

Putting the dubious aims of S2292 aside, the bill’s feasibility raises serious concerns. It is virtually impossible to enact or enforce. The DMV lacks the necessary infrastructure to manage or regulate this massive undertaking. Creating this system would be complex and burdensome for taxpayers — not to mention causing even longer lines and wait times at DMV offices. It would also be unworkable to manage through the currently existing retail channels that sell e-bikes. The bill lacks any guidance on how these onerous regulations would work in practice.

Even the insurance industry, which would stand to gain thousands of new paying customers, is strongly opposed to this proposal. There are currently no insurance products that exist on the market to fulfill this mandate. The Insurance Council, the industry group advocating for insurance companies and policyholders in Trenton, indicates it would take years to build a product they could sell for this new category of coverage. 

Yes, we’ve reached a rare moment when insurance executives and bike riders are totally aligned — the sheer unfairness of this bill is bringing everyone together. 

If you own or want to buy an e-bike or scooter, this bill adds another layer of regulation and cost to an already bloated system. New Jersey’s average auto insurance cost is over $2,500 a year. Treating low-speed e-bikes and scooters like motor vehicles would make alternatives to cars more expensive, particularly for those on the lower end of the economic spectrum who rely on affordable transportation for work.

This flawed bill has nothing to do with safety or equity. If it passes, personal injury attorneys will get richer, but at what cost? Fewer people will be riding bikes, traffic and air quality will worsen, workers will have less money, food and other delivery services will cost more, and the number of fatalities will increase with more cars on the roads. What a tradeoff. 

There are far more pressing issues when it comes to transportation accessibility and safety than misguided requirements to register and insure every e-bike in the state. Lawmakers must slam the brakes on this cynical proposal before it’s too late.

India has millions of dairy farmers. It’s creating a methane problem that’s tricky to solve

BENGALURU, India (AP) — India is the world’s largest milk producer, and is home to 80 million dairy farmers who made 231 million tons of milk last year. Many farmers, like Tamilarasu, only have a few cows, but the industry as a whole has 303 million bovine cattle like cows and buffalo, making it the largest contributor to methane emissions in the country. The federal government has made some positive steps to reduce methane, but wants to focus emissions cuts elsewhere, like by moving to renewable energy, saying most methane emissions are a fact of life. But experts say the industry can and should make more reductions that can quickly limit warming.
