Project-based learning is a hot topic in many schools these days, as educators work to make learning more meaningful for students. As students conduct hands-on projects addressing real-world issues, they dig deeper and make personal connections to the knowledge and skills they’re gaining. But not just any project fits into this concept. Learn more about strong project-based learning ideas, and find examples for any age or passion.

What is project-based learning?

Project-based learning (PBL) uses real-world projects and student-directed activities to build knowledge and skills. Kids choose a real-world topic that’s meaningful to them (some people call these “passion projects”), so they’re engaged in the process from the beginning. These projects are long-term, taking weeks, months, or even a full semester or school year. Students may complete them independently or working in small groups. What makes a good PBL project?

In many ways, PBL is more like the work adults do in their daily jobs, especially because student efforts have potential real-world effects. A strong PBL project:

  • Addresses a real-world issue or problem
  • Requires sustained and independent inquiry, in and out of the classroom
  • Allows students voice and choice throughout the project
  • Combines elements of many disciplines
  • Includes collaboration with public partners, such as universities, community organizations, or businesses
  • Produces a public product that is seen by those outside the school community
  • Covers a complete process, including activities like research, design, production, marketing or public awareness, and enlisting supporters or investors

Outdoor Project-Based Learning Ideas

  • Create a new local park, or improve an existing one by adding new features or providing needed maintenance.
  • Plant a community garden to provide food for a soup kitchen, food pantry, or other organization.
  • Design and create a butterfly, pollinator, or other wildlife garden to support the local ecosystem.
  • Build a new walking or biking trail that’s safe for people of all ages to use.
  • Devise and implement a way to reduce litter in your community.
  • Set up and manage a school or community compost pile, and distribute the resulting soil to those who need it most.

Big Ideas for Better Schools: Ten Ways to Improve Education

Ideas for students, teachers, schools, and communities.

Fourteen years ago The George Lucas Educational Foundation was created to celebrate and encourage innovation in schools. Since then we have discovered many creative educators, business leaders, parents, and others who were making positive changes not only from the top down but also from the bottom up. Since that time we have been telling their stories through our Web site, our documentary films, and Edutopia magazine.

Along the way, we listened and learned. Nothing is simple when strengthening and invigorating such a vast and complex institution as our educational system, but common ideas for improvement emerged. We've distilled those into this ten-point credo.

In the coming year, we will publish a series of essays that further explores each aspect of this agenda, with the hope that those on the frontlines of education can make them a part of their schools.

1. Engage : Project-Based Learning Students go beyond the textbook to study complex topics based on real-world issues, such as the water quality in their communities or the history of their town, analyzing information from multiple sources, including the Internet and interviews with experts. Project-based classwork is more demanding than traditional book-based instruction, where students may just memorize facts from a single source. Instead, students utilize original documents and data, mastering principles covered in traditional courses but learning them in more meaningful ways. Projects can last weeks; multiple projects can cover entire courses. Student work is presented to audiences beyond the teacher, including parents and community groups.

Reality Check : At the Clear View Charter School, in Chula Vista, California, fourth- and fifth-grade students collected insect specimens, studied them under an electron microscope via a fiber-optic link to a nearby university, used Internet resources for their reports, and discussed their findings with university entomologists.

Teachers, parents, and individual students can closely monitor academic progress and use the assessment to focus on areas that need improvement. Tests should be an opportunity for students to learn from their mistakes, retake the test, and improve their scores.

Reality Check: At the Key Learning Community, in Indianapolis, teachers employ written rubrics to assess students' strengths and weaknesses using categories based on Howard Gardner's concept of multiple intelligences, including spatial, musical, and interpersonal skills.

5. Coach : Intellectual and Emotional Guide The most important role for teachers is to coach and guide students through the learning process, giving special attention to nurturing a student's interests and self-confidence. More money in school districts should be directed to the classroom rather than the bureaucracy.

New school construction and renovation should emphasize school design that supports students and teachers collaborating in teams, with pervasive access to technology. Schools can be redesigned to also serve as community centers that provide health and social services for families, as well as counseling and parenting classes.

Reality Check : The school year at the Alice Carlson Applied Learning Center, in Fort Worth, Texas, consists of four blocks of about nine weeks each. Despite a common refrain that education is slow to change, there is no shortage of novel and groundbreaking ideas in the sector.  Children in Brazil  are designing video games to teach each other biology lessons. In Ghana,  students are receiving training  in self-awareness and resilience even as they complete lessons in typical school subjects. Meanwhile,  in South Africa , high school graduates are testing out career paths as project managers and engineers, and getting their post-secondary education funded through a shared education program run by companies and schools.

At the  Center for Universal Education , we recently completed a global catalog of education innovations as part of our new book,  Leapfrogging Inequality: Remaking Education to Help Young People Thrive .

The catalog documents almost 3,000 education innovations from 166 countries around the world. The ideas come from both developing and developed countries, are implemented by a variety of actors (non-profits, governments, and the private sector) and range from new and untested to established and backed by evidence.

Deciding which innovations are valuable

While innovations in education are taking place around the globe, they are not all created equal—different ideas will lead to different outcomes.

So how should education policymakers evaluate what is the most valuable? In the words of one African minister of education: “Every single day I have people pitching their latest new innovative ideas to me, and I have no way of telling which ones are good.”

We argue that the most worthwhile innovations in education are those that have the power to rapidly accelerate progress and help give all children the full set of skills and competencies they need to thrive today and in the future. We believe ideas like these have the power to “leapfrog” education progress.

What is leapfrogging in education? The term is not commonly used in the education sector, and is more often employed to reference the rapid and non-linear progress made in telecommunications or banking. In Kenya, for example, the move to mobile banking from more traditional forms doubled the number of people with access to credit in less than four years. This was a leap forward from the previous pace of progress.

Making similar exponential progress in education will involve a mindset shift for policymakers. In most countries, mass education systems have been developed in a step-by-step fashion. First, they focus on getting kids into school (access), then they focus on academic achievement (quality) and then they focus on the relevance of what they are teaching for students’ future lives (relevance).

We argue that education policymakers have to address all three of these at the same time. Even for children out of school living in the most remote communities, the focus should be on how to help them develop the full breadth of competencies and skills they will need to thrive today—not five or 10 years from now once schools are built and materials are provided.

Take, for example,  the approach  that education leaders serving rural children in Brazil’s Amazon jungle have taken. In a few short years, children who previously only had access to primary school have gained access to secondary education with a curriculum that is specifically adapted to their context, culture and needs. Lessons are delivered via two-way video link with top content specialists lecturing from the region’s capital, supported by classroom management and coaching from mentoring teachers in the community.

A route to faster progress

Innovation is key to education progress. But how, concretely, can policymakers harness its power? After an extensive literature review, interviewing more than 100 thought leaders and analysing thousands of innovations, we have developed a framework, which we call the leapfrog pathway.

This has two core elements. First, the teaching and learning experience must be transformed to be increasingly student-centered. Second, the process of recognizing student learning—whether that is through national exams or classroom grades—must follow suit and be increasingly individualized.

To support these changes to the teaching and learning experience, policymakers will need to leverage technology. They will also need to diversify the people and places where learning takes place, so that often over-burdened classroom teachers can get effective support from other members of the community, peers, or technology.

The cost of slow progress

Ultimately, if we do not leapfrog in education, half of all youth  in the developing world  entering society (and the workforce) in 2030 will lack the basic secondary-level skills they need to survive. The risks of trying a new approach are dwarfed by the risks of not finding ways to rapidly help all children develop the skills they need to thrive. This holds equally true for the 30 percent of children in high-income countries, the 50 percent of children in middle-income countries and the 90 percent of children in low-income countries who will not develop necessary skills if we continue with business as usual.

Today’s students are tomorrow’s workers, problem-solvers and leaders. Access to a quality education is vital not just for children to thrive, but for social and economic development.

The United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals set out that every child should have a free, quality primary and secondary level education. It’s estimated that the disruptions to education resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic have set back progress in educational gains by 20 years . While all students were impacted by the pandemic, the difference between the privileged, and those being left behind, has widened even further.

In India, for example, one study suggests nearly 40% of students in less privileged households have not been able to study at all. And the government estimates some 30 million schoolchildren have no access to smartphones, devices or the internet to attend school online.

World Class Education Challenge

Deloitte is committed to using this moment to truly catalyze change. We must identify what is working, the new ways and innovations that are delivering results for students, and scale them. To find ideas with the highest potential for impact and scale, Deloitte ran the World Class Education Challenge on the World Economic Forum’s UpLink platform.

The Challenge had three focus areas: providing equitable access for students being left behind; investing in teachers’ development; and equipping students with the skills they will need in 2030. It focused on finding solutions in Africa, India and Asia Pacific.

From almost 400 submissions, 12 innovators have been selected. These individuals and their organizations will work alongside Deloitte professionals to help address the global education crisis. They will also receive up to US$1 million in professional services on a pro bono basis and financial grants.

Developed with the needs of African teachers in mind, Learnable is an augmented teaching assistant that allows teachers to compose and distribute dynamic, interactive lessons via a dedicated mobile app and WhatsApp. Lessons can be saved offline, so that students do not need constant internet access.

Nomad Education

Nomad Education is a free mobile app which offers 350 academic certificates that helps more than 1 million francophone children every year to succeed in their studies, whatever their social, geographic or academic background.

Pan-African Robotics Competition

The Pan-African Robotics Competition (PARC) is the largest robotics competition in Africa and has educated more than a 1000 African youth in Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM), while also offering a Virtual Learning Platform (VLP) to enable the African youth to virtually learn to code, design and build their own robots. It also integrates a feature for collaboration and knowledge exchange.

A lack of quality STEM education directly impacts productivity and economic development in Nigeria. Millions of students have no access to traditional laboratories, which are expensive to build and maintain, says Oyebisi. StanLab is a cloud-based, 3D virtual laboratory platform, providing near real-life laboratory experience for students without access to physical laboratories.

How these institutions carefully curate connections and relationships to take ideas from the drawing board into the marketplace.

While calls for cross-sector collaborations to tackle complex societal issues abound, in practice, only few succeed. Those that do often have a collaboration intermediary, which can bring together different actors, develop relationships among collaborators, and create an ecosystem to support ideas over time. With their strengths in knowledge creation and their role as community anchors, universities are ideally equipped to create and orchestrate support for the kind of innovation that the sustainability imperative requires. However, to be able to take on this role they need to develop a culture of open innovation, experimentation and iteration, and value, which requires supporting teams that will champion the change and facilitate collaborations among the diverse actors of the innovation ecosystem.

Cross-sector collaborations, combining the competencies, skills, and resources of diverse actors, are increasingly seen by academics and professionals alike as the best way to tackle complex societal and environmental issues — and universities are becoming key players in these collaborations.

F ifty-six years ago this week, at the height of the Vietnam War, Columbia University students occupied half a dozen campus buildings and made two principal demands of the university: stop funding military research, and cancel plans to build a gym in a nearby Black neighborhood. After a week of futile negotiations, Columbia called in New York City police to clear the occupation.

The physical details of that crisis were much rougher than anything happening today. The students barricaded doors and ransacked President Grayson Kirk’s office. “Up against the wall, motherfucker, this is a stick-up,” Mark Rudd, the student leader and future member of the terrorist organization Weather Underground, wrote in an open letter to Kirk, who resigned a few months later. The cops arrested more than 700 students and injured at least 100, while one of their own was permanently disabled by a student.

In other ways, the current crisis brings a strong sense of déjà vu: the chants, the teach-ins, the nonnegotiable demands, the self-conscious building of separate communities, the revolutionary costumes, the embrace of oppressed identities by elite students, the tactic of escalating to incite a reaction that mobilizes a critical mass of students. It’s as if campus-protest politics has been stuck in an era of prolonged stagnation since the late 1960s. Why can’t students imagine doing it some other way?

Perhaps because the structure of protest reflects the nature of universities. They make good targets because of their abiding vulnerability: They can’t deal with coercion, including nonviolent disobedience. Either they overreact, giving the protesters a new cause and more allies (this happened in 1968, and again last week at Columbia), or they yield, giving the protesters a victory and inviting the next round of disruption. This is why Columbia’s president, Minouche Shafik, no matter what she does, finds herself hammered from the right by Republican politicians and from the left by her own faculty and students, unable to move without losing more ground. Her detractors know that they have her trapped by their willingness to make coercive demands: Do what we say or else we’ll destroy you and your university. They aren’t interested in a debate.

Michael Powell: The unreality of Columbia’s ‘liberated zone’

A university isn’t a state —it can’t simply impose its rules with force. It’s a special kind of community whose legitimacy depends on mutual recognition in a spirit of reason, openness, and tolerance. At the heart of this spirit is free speech, which means more than just chanting, but free speech can’t thrive in an atmosphere of constant harassment. When one faction or another violates this spirit, the whole university is weakened as if stricken with an illness. The sociologist Daniel Bell, who tried and failed to mediate a peaceful end to the Columbia occupation, wrote afterward:

In a community one cannot regain authority simply by asserting it, or by using force to suppress dissidents. Authority in this case is like respect. One can only earn the authority—the loyalty of one’s students—by going in and arguing with them, by engaging in full debate and, when the merits of proposed change are recognized, taking the necessary steps quickly enough to be convincing.

The crackdown at Columbia in 1968 was so harsh that a backlash on the part of faculty and the public obliged the university to accept the students’ demands: a loss, then a win. The war in Vietnam ground on for years before it ended and history vindicated the protesters: another loss, another win. But the really important consequence of the 1968 revolt took decades to emerge. We’re seeing it now on Columbia’s quad and the campuses of elite universities around the country. The most lasting victory of the ’68ers was an intellectual one. The idea underlying their protests wasn’t just to stop the war or end injustice in America. Its aim was the university itself—the liberal university of the postwar years, which no longer exists.

That university claimed a special role in democratic society. A few weeks after the 1968 takeover, the Columbia historian Richard Hofstadter gave the commencement address to a wounded institution. “A university is a community, but it is a community of a special kind,” Hofstadter said—“a community devoted to inquiry. It exists so that its members may inquire into truths of all sorts. Its presence marks our commitment to the idea that somewhere in society there must be an organization in which anything can be studied or questioned—not merely safe and established things but difficult and inflammatory things, the most troublesome questions of politics and war, of sex and morals, of property and national loyalty.” This mission rendered the community fragile, dependent on the self-restraint of its members.

The lofty claims of the liberal university exposed it to charges of all kinds of hypocrisy, not least its entanglement with the American war machine. The Marxist philosopher Herbert Marcuse, who became a guru to the New Left, coined the phrase repressive tolerance for the veil that hid liberal society’s mechanisms of violence and injustice. In this scheme, no institution, including the university, remained neutral, and radical students embraced their status as an oppressed group.

At Stanford (where my father was an administrator in the late ’60s, and where students took over a campus building the week after the Columbia revolt), white students compared themselves to Black American slaves. To them, the university was not a community dedicated to independent inquiry but a nexus of competing interest groups where power, not ideas, ruled. They rejected the very possibility of a disinterested pursuit of truth. In an imaginary dialogue between a student and a professor, a member of the Stanford chapter of Students for a Democratic Society wrote: “Rights and privacy and these kinds of freedom are irrelevant—you old guys got to get it through your heads that to fight the whole corrupt System POWER is the only answer.”

A long, intricate , but essentially unbroken line connects that rejection of the liberal university in 1968 to the orthodoxy on elite campuses today. The students of the ’68 revolt became professors—the German activist Rudi Dutschke called this strategy the “long march through the institutions”—bringing their revisionist thinking back to the universities they’d tried to upend. One leader of the Columbia takeover returned to chair the School of the Arts film program. “The ideas of one generation become the instincts of the next,” D. H. Lawrence wrote. Ideas born in the ’60s, subsequently refined and complicated by critical theory, postcolonial studies, and identity politics, are now so pervasive and unquestioned that they’ve become the instincts of students who are occupying their campuses today. Group identity assigns your place in a hierarchy of oppression. Between oppressor and oppressed, no room exists for complexity or ambiguity. Universal values such as free speech and individual equality only privilege the powerful. Words are violence. There’s nothing to debate.

The post-liberal university is defined by a combination of moneymaking and activism. Perhaps the biggest difference between 1968 and 2024 is that the ideas of a radical vanguard are now the instincts of entire universities—administrators, faculty, students. They’re enshrined in reading lists and codes of conduct and ubiquitous clichés. Last week an editorial in the Daily Spectator , the Columbia student newspaper, highlighted the irony of a university frantically trying to extricate itself from the implications of its own dogmas: “Why is the same university that capitalizes on the legacy of Edward Said and enshrines The Wretched of the Earth into its Core Curriculum so scared to speak about decolonization in practice?”

A Columbia student, writing to one of his professors in a letter that the student shared with me, explained the dynamic so sharply that it’s worth quoting him at length:

I think [the protests] do speak to a certain failing on Columbia’s part, but it’s a failing that’s much more widespread and further upstream. That is, I think universities have essentially stopped minding the store, stopped engaging in any kind of debate or even conversation with the ideologies which have slowly crept in to every bit of university life, without enough people of good conscience brave enough to question all the orthodoxies. So if you come to Columbia believing in “decolonization” or what have you, it’s genuinely not clear to me that you will ever have to reflect on this belief. And after all this, one day the university wakes up to these protests, panics under scrutiny, and calls the cops on students who are practicing exactly what they’ve been taught to do from the second they walked through those gates as freshmen.

The muscle of independent thinking and open debate, the ability to earn authority that Daniel Bell described as essential to a university’s survival, has long since atrophied. So when, after the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, Jewish students found themselves subjected to the kind of hostile atmosphere that, if directed at any other minority group, would have brought down high-level rebukes, online cancellations, and maybe administrative punishments, they fell back on the obvious defense available under the new orthodoxy. They said that they felt “unsafe.” They accused pro-Palestinian students of anti-Semitism—sometimes fairly, sometimes not. They asked for protections that other groups already enjoyed. Who could blame them? They were doing what their leaders and teachers had instructed them was the right, the only, way to respond to a hurt.

And when the shrewd and unscrupulous Representative Elise Stefanik demanded of the presidents of Harvard and Penn whether calls for genocide violated their universities’ code of conduct, they had no good way to answer. If they said yes, they would have faced the obvious comeback: “Why has no one been punished?” So they said that it depended on the “context,” which was technically correct but sounded so hopelessly legalistic that it led to the loss of their jobs. The response also made nonsense of their careers as censors of unpopular speech. Shafik, of Columbia, having watched her colleagues’ debacle, told the congresswoman what she wanted to hear, then backed it up by calling the cops onto campus—only to find herself denounced on all sides, including by Senator Tom Cotton, who demanded that President Joe Biden deploy the United States military to Columbia, and by her own faculty senate, which threatened a vote of censure.

T he right always knows how to exploit the excesses of the left. It happened in 1968, when the campus takeovers and the street battles between anti-war activists and cops at the Democratic convention in Chicago helped elect Richard Nixon. Republican politicians are already exploiting the chaos on campuses. This summer, the Democrats will gather again in Chicago, and the activists are promising a big show. Donald Trump will be watching.

Elite universities are caught in a trap of their own making, one that has been a long time coming. They’ve trained pro-Palestinian students to believe that, on the oppressor-oppressed axis, Jews are white and therefore dominant, not “marginalized,” while Israel is a settler-colonialist state and therefore illegitimate. They’ve trained pro-Israel students to believe that unwelcome and even offensive speech makes them so unsafe that they should stay away from campus. What the universities haven’t done is train their students to talk with one another.

Designer was created with everyone in mind - you don't need to be a skilled Designer to create  compelling designs. From stunning social media posts, invitations, digital postcards, and more,  Designer is there for you, whenever you need to design. 

While creating and sharing your designs, please be sure to follow the content policies as defined  here: Code of Conduct for the Azure OpenAI Service | Microsoft Learn.  

Please keep in mind that Designer is still in preview and the team is continuously learning and  improving the product accordingly. We encourage all users to submit feedback by using the  feedback icon on the top right corner within the Designer experience. You can also submit  feedback by messaging us on Instagram or X (formerly Twitter) . 

How was Designer evaluated? What metrics are used to measure performance? 

The Designer experience is continuously evaluated through a combination of user engagement  methods, including a preview phase, one-on-one user interviews, and integrated product feedback  mechanisms. This user-centric approach allowed for both qualitative insights and objective  measurements. Several key metrics are used to measure performance including user engagement  rates, feedback volume, usability metrics. 

What are the limitations of Designer? How can users minimize the impact of Designer’s limitations when using the system? 

Designer first launched as a web app, but we are actively working on expanding to other surfaces  where users can access Designer – including a Windows app, integrations like Designer in Edge  (now in select markets), and a mobile app (now available in early preview). The web-based Designer  app has the ability to share designs using QR code with mobile phone, helping minimize the impact  of Designer's limitations. 

Designer is available in English only, and we are actively working on expanding to other languages. 

The preview Microsoft Designer app is available for free. Microsoft will collect user feedback and  make improvements during this period. A paid Microsoft 365 subscription will be required to  continue using some of these features at a later date. 

What operational factors and settings allow for effective and responsible use of  Designer? 

We are committed to creating responsible AI by design. Our work is guided by a core set of  principles: fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency, and  accountability. We are putting those principles into practice across the company to develop and  deploy AI that will have a positive impact on society. We take a cross-company approach through  cutting-edge research, best-of-breed engineering systems, and excellence in policy and  governance. 

We also recommend referring to Designer’s Terms of Use for information on approved terms of use  for Designer: https://designer.microsoft.com/termsOfUse.pdf. 

When you interact with Designer, Microsoft collects your prompt (what you request to Designer)  and how Designer responded. We use this data to provide, to support, and to improve Designer,  consistent with the Microsoft Privacy Statement . For example, this information helps us understand  which design recommendations are helpful and relevant to you. 

For all images, Designer's editing features, we have implemented content credentials, provenance  based on the C2PA standard, to help users identify that images are edited or AI generated. 

Provenance metadata can be viewed in the Content Credentials site .  

All images generated using Designer's Erase feature will carry Provenance metadata to identify the source via signing the image appropriately.  

We have put controls in place to prevent the upload or generation of harmful images.  

Feature Details 

Generative Erase: Microsoft Designer’s Generative Erase feature enables users to remove unwanted objects or areas from their photos.

Input / Output: This feature takes user’s original image as well as selected area to be erased as input and provides as output a modified version of the image, with selected area erased.

User Controls:

Quick select enables user to auto-select erase area by clicking on any object in photo

Brush select enables user to manually select erase area by drawing a mask in photo

Start over enables user to re-do the mask creation

Erase object calls Designer’s model to erase specified areas within photo

X control exits out of experience and dismisses floating toolbar

Report control enables users to report any issues

Looks good, accepts the result of Erase and updates photo accordingly

How to Sustain Black Educators

Much research has highlighted the positive impact of teacher diversity on students’ academic outcomes and well-being and yet only 6% of public school teachers in the United States are Black, compared with 15% of students, according to the National Center for Education Statistics . In fact, the number of Black teachers in schools is in decline and efforts to move the dial have proved elusive . 

In a new book and accompanying webinar from Harvard Education Press, #BlackEducators Matter: The Experiences of Black Teachers in an Anti-Black World , editor and contributor Darrius Stanley urges school and district leaders to confront what he describes as “hostile, chilly, racialized climates” in schools and to reconsider diversity efforts that focus solely on recruitment and retention of Black educators. Instead, Stanley, an assistant professor of educational leadership at the University of Minnesota, believes that the emphasis should be on intentionally designing schools that humanize and sustain Black educators and celebrate “their unique histories, experiences, and dreams.”

With that vision in mind, Stanley, a former middle school educator and leader himself, also recommends that school and district leaders:

  • Ask themselves what they can do to make their schools places where Black educators, students, and families can thrive.
  • Be mindful of practices and policies that disadvantage Black students and educators, including the “overrepresentation of Black youth in special education, underrepresentation of Black educators in leadership and decision-making roles, and the over disciplining of Black students.”
  • Resist deficit frameworks, such as the overuse of Black educators as disciplinarians .
  • Ensure school board members, who play a vital role in shaping and executing policies and hiring procedures, receive anti-racism training and work to “generate policies that center Black educator well-being and sustainment."
  • Create programs and avenues for Black educators to access a variety of district leadership and decision-making jobs.
  • Co-create schools that are shaped by liberating pedagogies and practices. 

Some of the trends seen among Black teachers today, including their underrepresentation, are the result of a long legacy of exclusion, according to Stanley. As a result, he encourages policymakers to keep history and race in mind when creating new educational policies. 

Stanley also encourages policymakers to:

  • Probe the effects of previous policies and reform efforts and their consequences for Black educators.
  • Listen and engage with Black educators’ perspectives and life experiences rather than making them the “objects of reform or other efforts to diversify the teacher workforce.”  
  • Institutionalize engagement practices with Black school communities.
  • Remove any racial bias or barriers to entry in teacher certification and licensure. (An entire chapter in the book, written by Andrene Castro and Ejana Bennett, is titled: Disrupting Anti-Blackness in Teacher Certification and Licensure Policies .)

Who, What, Why: Ariana Jimenez and the High School Voter Project

Never underestimate the power of free food. In the case of Ariana Jimenez of Plainfield, Illinois, it was the lure of pizza that first brought her to a voter registration drive, to sign up to vote in the state primary. “17-year-old me was very into free pizza,” Jimenez says. She also learned how to register high school peers and speak with them about voter education, becoming an election ambassador for her county.

Now a fourth-year student in the Wharton School studying business economics and public policy, with a second concentration in management, Jimenez continues to speak with high school students about civic engagement—this time in West Philadelphia.

While looking for a work-study job in her first year of college, Jimenez saw a posting for the High School Voter Project. Founded in 2020, the summer before Jimenez started, the High School Voter Project is a student-run, nonpartisan initiative supported by Penn’s Netter Center for Community Partnerships that focuses on youth voter registration, civic engagement, and education. The program also promotes forms of advocacy beyond voting, especially to engage students under 18, including opportunities to speak with local legislators and to run campaigns at their school.

On Thursdays, Jimenez goes to Sayre High School, where the High School Voter program focuses on pre-professionalism, teaching them interviewing and email writing skills in addition to civic engagement. During these sessions, Jimenez and other volunteers mentor use a problem-solving approach to tackle issues the students identify: gun violence, the affordability crisis, and improving public schools.

Jimenez says the mentoring focuses on current events and community issues the students care about, which helps the Sayre students understand how voting impacts their lives. She points to an example when the high school students offered their thoughts about public transit citing concerns about safety, timeliness, and cleanliness. The team, says Jimenez, turned it around to address how voting impacts public policy.  

Asking the students, “Who’s in charge of making those decisions?” helped them realized that the SEPTA board is partially appointed by the Philadelphia mayor and city council, Jimenez says, drawing “connections to how who they vote for actually directly impacts their lives.”

She is passionate about the work. “Voting is fundamental to have a say in everything that goes on in this country,” Jimenez says. “That’s why it’s essential that all communities have voter access.”
