The National Agricultural Research Organisation was established by the National Agricultural Research Act 2005 as a body corporate with the mandate to provide strategic direction for publicly funded agricultural research in Uganda.

The organisation is composed of the Council as its governing body, Committees of Council, a Secretariat for its day-to-day operations, and semi-autonomous Public Agricultural Research Institutes (PARI’s) under its policy guidance. The Director General invites suitably qualified Ugandans to apply for the following positions at the NARO Secretariat and respective PARIs.

The Director General, National Agricultural Research Organization, Plot 11-13, Lugard Avenue, Entebbe – Uganda

Reports to: Director of Research Salary Grade: UR3RS Age Limit: Not more than 55 years

Overall Responsibility:  To study biochemical, physiological and chemical structures and function of plants, animals and micro-organisms such as bacteria and viruses and use research to develop industrial and agricultural products.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and evaluate the composition and function of catalytic proteins and other biological molecules
  • Investigate the genetic, physiological, chemical, physical and structural composition of cells, tissues and organisms
  • Investigate the control of metabolism, growth and development of plants, animals and micro-organisms
  • Identify cellular and developmental events that insure continuity of plant life to improve priority crops
  • Determine the influence of internal and external environments in plants, animals and micro-organism
  • Apply diversified knowledge of scientific research principles, practices, and protocols in the conduct of research projects
  • Develop and test new biochemical products
  • Participate in the formulation of strategic management plans for the research institute including development of annual work plans and budgets
  • Develop grant proposals to secure funding for conducting specific research programmes in line with the institute’s strategic management plan and identified research priorities
  • Prepare analyse, concept papers, technical and scientific papers and reports as well as other documentation for publication and dissemination
  • Provide technical leadership and consultation to team members, professional co-workers and other collaborators

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD in biochemistry, Chemistry, Plant physiology or equivalent qualifications
  • Excellent leadership, inter personal and communication skills including demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in teams.
  • Six years’ experience at the level of Senior Research Officer or equivalent experience from a reputable organisation.
  • The applicant should have conducted research and published as first author and/or co-author of at least ten articles in peer reviewed journals.
  • The applicant should have successfully supervised three post-graduate students in the past five years,

Reports to: Director of Research Salary Grade: UR4RS Age Limit: Not more than 55 years

Overall Responsibility:  To conduct research leading to establishment of causes of plant diseases, their mode of transmission, epidemiology, forecast and management.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Identify pathogens causing plant diseases
  • Undertake isolation, culturing and characterization of economically important plant causing pathogens
  • Conduct regular surveillance of economically important crop diseases in the country
  • Determine yield losses of economically important diseases on major crops
  • Study and understand the epidemiology (interplay of factors) of plant diseases
  • Develop appropriate disease management strategies
  • Develop grant proposals to secure funding for conducting specific research programmes in line with the institute’s strategic management plan
  • Apply advanced analytical techniques, modifications and extension of scientific theories and practices in the conduct of research projects
  • Participate in determining priority research experiments
  • Formulate and design experiments/studies with implementation plans and schedules. Also determine resources requirements and prepare annual budgets as required for the research project

Minimum Qualifications

  • A PhD in Crop Sciences including but not limited to; Plant pathology, Plant entomology, Plant microbiology, and Plant biotechnology.
  • Four years’ experience at the level of Research Officer or equivalent experience from a reputable organisation
  • Possession of four peer reviewed publications.
  • Extensive knowledge in Plant pathology

ABI ZARDI – Arua District, Ngetta ZARDI – Lira District, MUZARDI – Mukono District

Reports to: Director of Research Salary Grade: UR4RS Age Limit: Not more than 55years

Overall Responsibility:  A successful applicant shall be responsible for planning, designing, conducting research and presenting findings on respective field for enhanced and sustainable agricultural production.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, design, implement and evaluate forage species and their responses to animal production.
  • Identify constraints to livestock and forage production.
  • Collect and evaluate promising forage production.
  • Collect and evaluate promising forage germplasm and feed resources for improved livestock nutrition.
  • Study the effects of different forage/feed resources on livestock production.
  • Develop strategies for improving livestock production through improved nutrition.
  • Determine nutritional requirements for annuals, by species, breed, physiological status and production levels.
  • Identify feeds resources that can provide animal the nutrient in question.
  • Provide models for rational feed utilization, generate feed composition tables and feeding standards.
  • A PhD in Livestock Science including but not limited to; Veterinary medicine, Livestock nutrition, Livestock breeding and genetics, and Livestock production.
  • Possession of four peer-reviewed publications.

  • Identify vector related problems affecting the Livestock industry and types of insects that have potential commercial value.
  • Identify and characterize vectors causing livestock problems and prioritized vector/insects of economic importance and have potential commercial value.
  • Study the biology and ecology of the vectors of economic importance and species of insects that have commercial value.
  • Determine the risk factors attributed to vectors of economic importance and damages and consequences caused by vectors.
  • Develop appropriate measures for controlling the effects of the vectors.
  • Evaluate the commercial value of these insects/insect products and determining marketability/ market potential of commercial insects.
  • Evaluate existing methods of exploitation of insects/insect products, and determine potential of maximum exploitation
  • Determine and evaluating constraints that hinder maximum exploitation of commercial insects and develop appropriate measures.

Overall Responsibility:

A successful applicant shall be responsible for planning, designing, conducting research and presenting findings on respective field for enhanced and sustainable agricultural production.

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Design and implement farmer participatory research for crop commodity systems.
  • Collect, analyze and interpret agronomy and on-farm research trial data.
  • Study the effects of various cropping systems on crop yield and determine the most efficient cropping system for optimum crop production.
  • Identify nutrient needs of the various crops (plant nutrition) and develop corrective measures to alleviate the problems.
  • Develop appropriate crop and soil management technologies that are gender responsive and avoids soil resource mining but increase crop yield.
  • Study the effects of weeds, weed competition and nutrient mining on crop yield, diseases and insect pests.
  • Collaborate with other researchers in multiplication of early generation seed.
  • Disseminate study results through farmer feedback workshops, training workshops and sessions, conferences, seminars, brochures, newsletters, journals, reports, media, field days and agricultural shows.
  • Contribute to the development of training and outreach materials, training of farmers, extension personnel, university students and interested parties on pasture improvement and management.
  • Applicants should hold a Master’s Degree in Soil Science or Crop Science with a bias in Agronomy.
  • Should have a minimum of three years demonstrated working experience in a related field and proven record of publication in referred journals.

Overall Responsibility

To study food products and processes for enhanced productivity.

  • Assesses the hazards associated with production, handling, processing, storage, marketing and consumption of coffee-based food products.
  • Participate in assessing the packaging options for processed coffee-based foods on the Ugandan market
  • Investigate the genetic, physiological, chemical, physical and structural composition of coffee plant cells and tissues
  • Investigate the control of metabolism, growth and development of coffee plants.
  • Identify cellular and developmental events that ensure continuity of coffee plant.
  • Develop technologies aimed at ensuring product integrity and safety of processed and unprocessed coffee-based foods
  • Develop commercial coffee-based food products using innovative techniques
  • Develop technologies aimed at harnessing low-value coffee-based agricultural produce and by-products for production of high value food products using up-market techniques
  • Develop appropriate packaging material for products derived from food biotechnology
  • Develop systems and models for management of waste derived from coffee-based food processing establishments/plants/industries
  • Perform any other duties assigned to you by the director and the designated supervisor

Academic Qualifications and Experience

  • Masters and bachelor’s degree in any of the following fields; Food science/technology, Biochemistry, Nutrition, Plant physiology, Microbiology or Chemistry

Reports to: Programme Leader Salary: Salary Grade UR 6 Age Limit: Not more than 50years

To plan, monitor and collect data from experiments to support research processes in a programme

  • Develop a field plan for conducting experiments on either the Institute’s research farm or on land belonging to farmers
  • Prepare materials such as seedlings, fertilisers, measurement instruments and other supplies for undertaking field experiments
  • Prepare the crop/forage experimental plot, planting seeds and labelling each experimental block according to the field plan
  • Collect data on crops/forage, specimens and samples at various experimental plots
  • Monitor the experimental plots for germination and sprouting as well as replanting, gap filling and tagging of crop/forage fields.
  • Weed and thin excess, diseased, weakling and stunted seedlings to ensure continuous growth of crops.
  • Application of fertiliser, inoculations, infestations and labelling according to crop field specifications
  • Undertake harvesting and post-harvesting activities including drying and packing of target crop/forage.
  • Conduct crop/forage disease surveillance by visiting farmers to establish extent of disease and pest outbreak
  • Participate in crop/forage baseline surveys to determine farmer needs and production constraints as well as establish the impact of technology adoption
  • Participate in developing and delivering education and training programmes to farmers and other stakeholders including students on visits and attachments
  • Participate in agricultural exhibitions and other programmes designed for technology transfer.
  • Hold a Diploma in agricultural Science with a focus in crop production.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in agricultural Science with a focus in crop science is an added advantage.
  • Skills in statistical data analysis
  • Demonstrate Skills in field sample collection.
  • Demonstrate motivation of working for long hours.

Specific Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Prepare materials such as measurement instruments, tools and other equipment for undertaking field experiments
  • Prepare the experimental plot, labelling each experimental block according to the field plan
  • Collect data, specimens and samples of insects and ticks from vegetation and farm animals at various experimental plots according to work-plan
  • Collect Preservation, identification of genera and species of insects and ticks to identify diseases they cause
  • Maintenance of ticks and tsetse colonies for insecticide, accaricide resistance sand sensitivity, testing and disease control
  • Application of inoculations, infestations and labelling according to field specifications
  • Conduct disease surveillance by visiting farmers to establish extent of disease and ticks outbreak
  • Participate in baseline surveys to determine farmer needs and production constraints as well as establish the impact of technology adoption

Minimum Qualifications and experience

  • A diploma in Animal Production.
  • Bachelor’s degree Veterinary medicine or Animal production is an added advantage.

Specific duties and responsibilities

  • Provide support to Scientists undertaking research and experiments with livestock and insects and contributing to experiments performed in order to generate a technology/information
  • Implement/set up research experiments and trials
  • Submitting data sets to Scientists for analysis
  • Contribute to technology promotion and information dissemination through involvement in production of information materials such as brochures, factsheets, user guides, and manuscripts
  • Contribute to production of livestock feed, breed materials, diagnostic kits
  • Perform experimental testing, monitoring experiments, making observations and maintaining quality control records as well as preparing test results and writing reports of findings
  • Operate equipment, preparing, installing and undertaking maintenance and repair of laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Contribute to outreach activities and institutional capacity strengthening through farmer trainings, supervision of internship students, instruction of students and performing other special assignments

Reports to: Programme Leader Salary: Salary Grade UR 6

Overall Responsibility To plan, monitor and collect data from experiments to support research processes in a programme

  • Prepare work plans for field sampling and data collection on the biology and ecology of different species of fish.
  • General data and biological and ecological parameters of different fish species.
  • Characterization of sampling ponds including composition, relative abundance, population structure, maturity distribution.
  • Collection and preservation of fish samples for food and fecundity analysis.
  • Interact with fisher communities to understand their problems.
  • Participate in workshops, Agricultural shows and any other activity related to information dissemination.
  • A diploma in Fisheries Management.
  • Bachelor’s degree in; Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Zoology is an added advantage.

Reports to: Director Corporate Services Salary Grade: UR3RS Age Limit: Not more than 55 years

Overall Responsibility:  Ensuring security of NARO’s land assets by providing technical leadership in the management of land matters.

Specific tasks and responsibilities

  • Establish and regularly update the NARO land cadastre for easy access to the land information and planning.
  • Coordinate surveys and titling of NARO institutional lands
  • Undertake cadastral verifications to support decision making on land matters.
  • Prepare land use maps for NARO institutional lands for improved land use planning and governance.
  • Undertake capacity building of farm managers and human resource officers on cadastral tools for land management for improved land governance and land use planning.
  • Provide technical liaison with both national and international institutions on matters of land management.
  • Ensure that Institutes develop and implement land-use plans.
  • Ensure land use is compliant with regulations, making suggestions for sustainable use, and researching the impact of development.
  • Work with the legal office in matters of land litigation.
  • Perform any other tasks that may be provided by the Director Corporate Service and /or Management from time to time.

Required Qualification and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following fields: Surveying, Cartography or Geo-informatics plus a Master’s Degree in any of the mentioned fields from a recognised university.
  • Must have knowledgeable in either Surveying or Cartography.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in coordinating issues of land surveys, titling, acquisition and appropriation in a government institution.
  • Must have a formal training in the field of GIS and Remote Sensing and demonstrable experience working with mapping software or Autocad for land management.
  • Must be conversant with institutional, legal frameworks and mechanisms in national land governance and management.

Reports to: Senior Administrative Officer Salary Grade: UR6Admin Age Limit: Not more than 40 years

To attend to the front desk administrative support services including directing guests to the offices that they can be attended to.

  • Scheduling appointments in consultation with Senior Administrative Assistants.
  • Responding to telephone inquiries, giving information to callers, routing calls to appropriate officials, and placing outgoing calls.
  • Updating the office diary, providing information to callers and visitors.
  • Receiving official visitors and walk-in customers by ascertaining the nature of business and directing them accordingly.
  • Receive, sort, record and distribute mail, general correspondence and documents to appropriate officials.

Reports to Human Resource and Administration Salary: Salary Grade UR 6 Admin

Overall Responsibility: To keep files, correspondences and records; and dispatch mails to relevant officers for action.

  • File records and documents in alpha/numeric order as well as according to subject matter.
  • Sort, file, folio, store, retire, check, correct and ensure that documents and other records are secure and accounted for.
  • Classify files and records according to a predetermined coding system to facilitate rapid and accurate filing and retrieval.
  • Opening, labeling and replacing worn out file covers.

Overall Responsibility: To drive institute vehicles that are in clean and sound mechanical condition

  • Undertake routine and preventive maintenance of motor vehicle by checking and topping-up the level of petrol, oil, water, battery electrodes and tyre pressure before operating the vehicle.
  • Regularly clean and polishing the vehicle, changing tyres as well as making minor repairs or adjustments.
  • Drive motor vehicle (car and van) to transport directors, staff, clients and others to designated locations.
  • Perform miscellaneous errands such as collecting and delivering mail and other items as well as buying goods, supplies and consumer items.
  • Load and offload baggage, goods and other material supplies with due regard to the safety of other people.
  • Maintain records of the motor vehicle’s daily activity showing journey, mileage, petrol, oil and signature of authorising officer to account for all the journeys made.
  • Regulate the radio, heating, lighting and ventilation system for passenger comfort.
  • Observe traffic and safety precautions in order to prevent accidents and to avoid traffic violations. In addition, undertakes first aid in case of injuries.
  • Report motor vehicle accident to the traffic police and the Maintenance Officer, obtaining police abstract report and completing insurance accident report form in conformance to traffic rules and regulations.
  • Requisition for petrol, lubricants and spare parts and maintaining a record accounting for the same.
  • Take the motor vehicle for major service or repairs in accordance to planned preventive maintenance schedule or insurance accident report.
  • Assist in performing miscellaneous tasks such as photocopying documents and cleaning the compound when not driving.

Overall Responsibility: To undertake patrol duties to inspect, check, guard and protect infrastructural facilities, buildings and installations including equipment, machinery and property against theft, fire, equipment malfunctions, vandalism and illegal entry

  • Patrol assigned areas to detect and prevent signs of intrusion and examines doors, windows and gates to ensure they are securely locked.
  • Raise the alarm or responding to the alarm and investigates disturbances.
  • Check for irregularities, such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes and calls the police or fire departments in cases of fire emergency or presence of unauthorized persons.
  • Guard entrance or exit, checking identification cards, screening individuals and motor vehicles as well as preventing passage of people or prohibited articles from entering or leaving restricted areas.
  • Provide information and warning violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles.
  • Apprehend, detain or evict intruders, offenders and violators from premises using force when necessary.

Research Assistant – 40 Positions

Position status: Short-term contract

Reports to: Study Coordinator

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Participate in data collection in accordance with the study protocol
  • Answer questions that the respondents may ask during the course of data collection
  • Participate in data validation to ensure quality of the data collected
  • Provide daily updates on field work including interviews completed and any other important information on field data collection
  • Any other duties assigned by the data collection team leaders or the study Coordinator

Minimum qualification and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Humanities, Social Sciences, Health Sciences, or any other related discipline
  • Possession of a Certificate in Good Clinical Practices or human subject’s protection is a MUST.
  • Proficiency in English (both spoken and written) and at least one of the local languages spoken in the study areas.
  • Prior experience of conducting face to face interviews.
  • Prior experience of collecting either quantitative or and qualitative data.
  • Prior experience in interviewing teenagers and using child friendly methods of interviewing.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills and ability to follow study specific procedures and guidelines reliably.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and observe deadlines.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Study Coordinator

Job Details: Job purpose: To conduct the 2023 Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) needs assessment data collection that explores access, availability, utilization, and quality of EmONC services in Uganda. Responsibilities: The position holders shall be responsible for: • Fieldwork preparation duties o Undertake a 3- days training on the adapted tools ensuring a common understanding of the data collection tools. • Ensure that clearance for data collection has been obtained from the appropriate authorities before the onset of the data collection process. • Fieldwork and data collection • Perform day-to-day data collection activities: seek consent from eligible participants and conduct in-depth interviews and key informant interviews in the field. o Respond to questions the participants may have about the assessment. • Share field notes and have brief discussions with the supervisor at the end of each day to discuss any challenges, solutions, and experiences. • Comply with the requirements necessary for conducting successful interviews using qualitative methods. • Ensure confidentiality of data collected and information. • After field visits • Ensure that all data captured is always kept secure. • Ensure all the modules are complete and are submitted to the National Server o Submit all participants’ consent forms to the supervisor. • Write a field report. Required Qualifications: • MB ChB; at least a diploma in Midwifery with experience of 3 years in the public or private sector. • OR At least a Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Community Health with 3 years’ experience • A certificate in Research Ethics will be an added advantage. • Previous experience with qualitative data collection on similar studies with a reputable research organization. • Basic Knowledge of EmONC. Skills • Demonstrated capacity to effectively communicate in English both orally and in written form. • Must be computer literate and able to use the ODK tools. • Ability to work independently as well as an effective team player.

Job Title: Research Nurse Company: Baylor Uganda Deadline: 1st May 2024

Job Summary: Conduct clinical assessment of research participants, recruit eligible study participants, and provide nursing care and medical services according to the study protocol. Develop standard operating procedures and submit event reports to regulatory bodies, IRB, and the sponsor.

Overall Responsibilities:

  • Identify, screen, and recruit eligible participants, ensuring the target number is met within the designated period.
  • Provide study information and obtain informed consent from participants and caregivers.
  • Perform required study anthropometric measurements and provide initial and emergency treatment for participants.
  • Collect samples for TB diagnosis and collect study data using provided tools.
  • Conduct quality control procedures on completed forms and respond to data queries.
  • Prepare and circulate minutes from meetings and weekly study progress reports.
  • Conduct follow-up home visits for clients receiving ART and TPT in the community.

Required Qualification, Experience, and Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from a recognized institution.
  • At least 2 years’ experience offering nursing care in a TB-HIV clinic and research setting.
  • Training in TB screening, prevention, and treatment. HIV/AIDs treatment, prevention, and research is an added advantage.
  • Must have at least a credit 6 in MATHEMATICS and ENGLISH at Ordinary Level (UCE).
