We’ll also take into account your goals for the possible future direction of your research and any “big name” journals you’d like to explore as a potential home for your work.   • Rhetorical analysis of exemplar articles: In this final step, we’ll examine the archives of each publication to identify articles that resemble yours in terms of topic and methodological approach. In addition, we’ll identify a number of articles from more recent volumes and issues that are representative of the work the journals and magazines publish today. After identifying those articles, we conduct a thorough rhetorical analysis of each, making determinations about purpose and audience, which will allow us to determine such things as how to “get in” to your dissertation research in article format, what knowledge can be assumed to be known by the reader, and what must be explained (and exactly how much and in what ways).

After presenting you with our findings, we then consult with you to determine how you’d like to proceed. Perhaps we might consider the Journal of Negro Education, which defines its mission as threefold: “first, to stimulate the collection and facilitate the dissemination of facts about the education of Black people; second, to present discussions involving critical appraisals of the proposals and practices relating to the education of Black people; and third, to stimulate and sponsor investigations of issues incident to the education of Black people.” Note how closely this mission matches our study’s focus. Looking through the journal to see what types of articles have been published in it will also provide you with a sense of the fit between our dissertation study and its mission. This is not straightforward work, and talking to a consultant here with publication experience can be invaluable.

Aside from the journal’s mission or focus, another consideration when choosing a journal is impact factor. The impact factor of a peer-reviewed journal is the number of times the average article in a given journal has been cited within the previous year. The impact factor might be considered especially important if you are looking to build a professional reputation through exposure to other researchers in your field, and being able to include lots of publications in high impact factor journals also looks good on your CV. However, you could find ways to frame this study to mesh with journals that feature research on empowerment and disabilities, which you might do by emphasizing the potential connection between supportive relationships for individuals with intellectual disabilities and the other dimensions of self-determination theory, autonomy and competence. This type of framing would require composing introduction, literature review, and discussion sections so that they emphasize the known connections between the three dimensions of self-determination; this, then, would suitably frame your study as one that has implications for empowerment for persons who experience disabilities.

When a scientific paper, dissertation or thesis is published the author(s) have a duty to report who has contributed to the work. This recognition can take several forms such as authorship, relevant acknowledgments and by citing previous work. There is a growing industry where publication consultants will work with authors, research groups or even institutions to help get their work published, or help submit their dissertation/thesis. This help can range from proof reading, data collection, analysis (including statistics), helping with the literature review and identifying suitable journals/conferences. In this opinion article we question whether these external services are required, given that institutions should provide this support and that experienced researchers should be qualified to carry out these activities. If these services are used, we argue that their use should at least be made transparent either by the consultant being an author on the paper, or by being acknowledged on the paper, dissertation or thesis. We also argue that publication consultants should provide an annual return that details the papers, dissertations and thesis that they have consulted on.

Academic research on management consulting or having management consultancy as the main research field is huge as the sector is a strategic one for management innovation, but a systematic and updated literature review is missing. This paper aims to fill this gap by providing a comprehensive systematic review of scholarly peer reviewed journals looking at the ambivalent roles of consultants in driving management innovation as well as management fashions.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review has been performed.

This paper provides a systematization of existing literature, where the state of the art is assessed and future research paths are highlighted.

Originality/value

The proposed research fills the gap concerning a review of literature on this topic and provides an analysis of 50 years of scholarly research, highlighting both the bright and dark sides of management consulting.
