Listen: we know homework isn’t fun, but it is a good way to reinforce the ideas and concepts you’ve learned in class. But what if you’re really struggling with your homework assignments?

If you’ve looked online for a little extra help with your take-home assignments, you’ve probably stumbled across websites claiming to provide the homework help and answers students need to succeed . But can homework help sites really make a difference? And if so, which are the best homework help websites you can use?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help websites–free and paid. We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help websites
  • The cost of homework help websites
  • The five best homework websites out there
  • The pros and cons of using these websites for homework help
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using online homework help

The Basics About Homework Help Websites–Free and Paid

Homework help websites are designed to help you complete your homework assignments, plain and simple.

What Makes a Homework Help Site Worth Using

Most of the best sites allow users to ask questions and then provide an answer (or multiple possible answers) and explanation in seconds. In some instances, you can even send a photo of a particular assignment or problem instead of typing the whole thing out!

Homework help sites also offer more than just help answering homework questions. Common services provided are Q&A with experts, educational videos, lectures, practice tests and quizzes, learning modules, math solving tools, and proofreading help. Homework help sites can also provide textbook solutions (i.e. answers to problems in tons of different textbooks your school might be using), one-on-one tutoring, and peer-to-peer platforms that allow you to discuss subjects you’re learning about with your fellow students.

And best of all, nearly all of them offer their services 24/7, including tutoring!

What You Should Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of scam sites out there willing to prey on desperate students. Before you sign up for any service, make sure you read reviews to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

A word to the wise: the more a company advertises help that veers into the territory of cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. The best homework help websites are going to help you learn the concepts you’ll need to successfully complete your homework on your own. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” a little later!)

body-gold-piggy-bank-money

You don't need a golden piggy bank to use homework help websites. Some provide low or no cost help for students like you!

How Expensive Are the Best Homework Help Websites?

First of all, just because a homework help site costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. Likewise, just because a homework help website is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best websites, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

When it comes to paid homework help services, the prices vary pretty widely depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to $150 dollars per month, with the most expensive services offering several hours of one-on-one tutoring with a subject expert per month.

The 5 Best Homework Help Websites

So, what is the best homework help website you can use? The answer is that it depends on what you need help with.

The best homework help websites are the ones that are reliable and help you learn the material. They don’t just provide answers to homework questions–they actually help you learn the material.

That’s why we’ve broken down our favorite websites into categories based on who they’re best for . For instance, the best website for people struggling with math might not work for someone who needs a little extra help with science, and vice versa.

Keep reading to find the best homework help website for you!

Best Free Homework Help Site: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

Not only is Khan Academy free, but it’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your needs. When you set up your account , you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help sites, including several AP classes.

Runner Up: Brainly.com offers a free service that allows you to type in questions and get answers and explanations from experts. The downside is that you’re limited to two answers per question and have to watch ads.

Best Paid Homework Help Site: Chegg

  • Price: $14.95 to $19.95 per month
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school.

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects.

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers.

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

  • Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want
  • Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help.

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter!

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!

body-studtypool-logo

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

  • Best for: Science homework help
  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly.

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Websites

First, let’s take a look at the benefits.

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays.

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college.

#2: Convenience

One of the main reasons that online homework help is appealing is because it’s flexible and convenient. You don’t have to go to a specific tutoring center while they’re open or stay after school to speak with your teacher. Instead, you can access helpful resources wherever you can access the internet, whenever you need them.

This is especially true if you tend to study at off hours because of your extracurriculars, work schedule, or family obligations. Sites that offer 24/7 tutoring can give you the extra help you need if you can’t access the free resources that are available at your school.

#3: Variety

Not everyone learns the same way. Maybe you’re more of a visual learner, but your teacher mostly does lectures. Or maybe you learn best by listening and taking notes, but you’re expected to learn something just from reading the textbook .

One of the best things about online homework help is that it comes in a variety of forms. The best homework help sites offer resources for all types of learners, including videos, practice activities, and even one-on-one discussions with real-life experts.

This variety can also be a good thing if you just don’t really resonate with the way a concept is being explained (looking at you, math textbooks!).

Not so fast. There are cons to homework help websites, too. Get to know them below!

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Websites

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help.

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option.

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up.

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service!

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get.

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating.

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help Websites for You

Now that you know some of our favorite homework help websites, free and paid, you can start doing some additional research on your own to decide which services might work best for you! Here are some top tips for choosing a homework help website.

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most.

Tip 3: Decide How Much One-On-One Help You Need

This is really about cost-effectiveness. If you learn well on your own by reading and watching videos, a free site like Khan Academy is a good choice. But if you need actual tutoring, or to be able to ask questions and get personalized answers from experts, a paid site that provides that kind of service may be a better option.

Tip 4: Set a Budget

If you decide you want to go with a paid homework help website, set a budget first . The prices for sites vary wildly, and the cost to use them can add up quick.

Tip 5: Read the Reviews

Finally, it’s always a good idea to read actual reviews written by the people using these homework sites. You’ll learn the good, the bad, and the ugly of what the users’ experiences have been. This is especially true if you intend to subscribe to a paid service. You’ll want to make sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

Here are the 5 best online tutoring services for K-12 students in 2022:

The best online tutoring service overall, the best online tutoring service for bipoc students, the best affordable online tutoring service, the best special education online tutoring service, the best online tutoring service for reluctant learners, other online tutoring services we considered, how we selected the best online tutoring services, the 5 best online tutoring services for k-12 students, including special education options.

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

Whether students need extra help with their math homework or a boost in reading comprehension, one-on-one tutoring is a time-honored way to help kids succeed in school.

While parents can find great options within their local school districts, the one-on-one online tutoring services in this guide provide K-12 tutors across all states and subjects. We also avoided traditional in-person franchises in favor of services with an online focus.

Insider Reviews spoke with Teresa Lubovich, spokesperson for the National Tutoring Association and owner of Poulsbo Tutoring in Washington, and Mel Jackman, a managing director of the East Harlem Tutorial Program , to gather selection criteria for the best online tutoring services (read more about our criteria at the end of this guide). Neither expert is affiliated with any of our picks.

We also reached out to K-12 online tutoring programs across the country to see if they fit our criteria and considered whether they stand out in any one category. Here are our top five picks, as well as some wonderful programs that didn't necessarily fit into a category.

Best online tutoring service overall: ArborBridge, from $145 ArborBridge matches highly trained K-12 academic tutors with students to facilitate learning across all subjects.

Best online tutoring service for BIPOC children: INC Education, from $65 INC is an award-winning tutoring program that gives BIPOC students agency in their personalized learning experience.

Best affordable online tutoring service: Varsity Tutors, from $269 Varsity Tutors is a vast, popular program featuring over 3,000 subjects, from basics to Mandarin to computer science.

Best online tutoring service for special education: Special Education Resource, from $275 Special Education Resource is deeply committed to serving students with a wide range of disabilities from nonverbal autism to ADHD.

Best online tutoring service for reluctant learners: Central Park Tutors, from $110 Central Park Tutors offers highly specialized services for kids who have a wide range of learning styles and needs.

ArborBridge matches highly trained K-12 academic tutors with students to facilitate learning across all subjects.

Pros : Distinguished tutors, highly personalized interactive experience, covers many subjects

Cons : Expensive, website can be difficult to navigate

Cost: $160 an hour

ArborBridge has offered national online tutoring for 10 years and is widely known for its test-prep services and top-of-the-line academic tutoring in every K-12 subject. Its instructors are specially trained to engage students through video chat platforms.

Forging deep connections over video chat is a critical skill, according to Lubovich. "The students need to feel connected to the tutor as if they were in person," she said. "How the tutor does that through the screen to reach in and draw them out, that's a skill — and it's really important."

Tutors at ArborBridge have a full online toolbox to draw from — from whiteboards to shared screens to interactive capabilities — and are constantly adjusting the tools and techniques they use to meet the unique needs of each student.

Every ArborBridge tutor graduated from a top-rated liberal arts or research university and has significant teaching experience. Beyond these requirements, tutors go through a rigorous interview process to evaluate their competence.

It also features a comprehensive student-tutor matching program for elementary, middle, and high school students.

INC is an award-winning tutoring program that gives BIPOC students agency in their personalized learning experience.

Pros: Racially inclusive, affordable, stringent process for student/tutor match

Cons: Some subjects are not available

Cost: The average cost is $65 an hour, but each family receives a unique price package depending on their needs.

INC Education is the largest online tutoring program for BIPOC students. Since 2013, Dallas-based INC Education, which stands for "It's Not Complicated," has expanded its program from a one-man show — founder Jay Veal — to 100 tutors in many subjects (including dance!) and 10,000 students across the United States.

Veal started as a math teacher who was frustrated by the lack of diversity in the educational field. According to studies , students have more academic success when they are taught by same-race and same-gendered teachers, yet most school teachers are white women .

"The role model effect is real," said Jackman. "There's so much evidence that having one teacher of the same race is enough to give the student ambition and drive. You don't know what you can be if you don't see it."

The national program features a staff of more than 90 BIPOC tutors, many with master's degrees. Veal, who delivered a TED Talk, has won several awards for the program, including the 2019 United Nations Global Leadership Award Honoree for SDG 4 Goal of Quality Education.

Before beginning instruction, INC assesses every student and treats them like "little brothers and sisters," according to Veal. The service also incorporates each student's parents into the process and, if needed, their school teachers. Students can choose the ethnicity and gender of their tutor, and every program is individually tailored.

Varsity Tutors is a vast, popular program featuring over 3,000 subjects, from basics to Mandarin to computer science.

Pros : Affordable, vast options, has a placement algorithm

Cons : Commission rates for tutors vary widely

Cost: $269/year or $299 for 6 months

Varsity Tutors has over 40,000 tutors across the country and is a popular choice for parents seeking quality tutoring at an affordable price.

The service started in 2007 and has been mostly online for five years. Despite being one of the larger online tutoring programs, Varsity rigorously vets its applicants through simulations, background checks, and interviews, and has turned down tutors with perfect SAT scores if they can't convey information in a comprehensible way.

"One of the biggest things I tell my parents is to look for someone who makes a good connection with your student," said Lubovich. "Because it doesn't matter if they know the math. If they don't connect, they don't do well."

Varsity Tutors uses a placement algorithm to match students with tutors based on things like schedule, educational needs, proficiency, learning style, interests, and goals.

Special Education Resource is deeply committed to serving students with a wide range of disabilities from nonverbal autism to ADHD.

Pros: Personalized attention, comprehensive approach, neurodiversity welcome, singular focus

Cons: Can be expensive

Cost: The average cost for a tailored program is $275 per month, but rates can vary widely from $35 to $2,000 per month.

Special Education Resource provides comprehensive online tutoring for kids with IEPs (individualized education plans). It is deeply committed to that goal, from assessment to evaluation — while many other tutoring services provide qualified special education academic tutoring, Special Education Resource has always been singularly focused on it.

Uniquely, the tutors are all part of the staff and are not independent contractors. This is a deliberate rule meant to create a family, according to co-founder Luke Dalien. All instructors have a four-year degree in special education as well as classroom experience.

"Not everyone is equipped for special education instruction," Lubovich said. "If a family has an IEP, they need to look for people who have been specifically trained."

Special Education Resource creates a very individually tailored experience for each child. In fact, Dalien said he personally meets with every parent individually, multiple times.

Students undergo a thorough assessment to be matched with the right instructor and also receive a specialized learning plan. Because of this, the rates vary widely depending on the needs of the student.

Central Park Tutors offers highly specialized services for kids who have a wide range of learning styles and needs.

Pros: Run by teachers, values neurodiversity

Cons : Does not offer every subject

Cost: $110 an hour

Central Park Tutors offers K-12 homework help and academic coaching in many basic subjects like physics and history. While it serves all children, the service also offers specific methods like the Orton-Gillingham and Wilson multisensory reading systems designed for kids with dyslexia.

Many tutoring programs were launched by entrepreneurs, but Central Park Tutors was founded in 2005 by two teachers and scholars: husband and wife Mike Wallach and Susana Kraglievich. The service now has about 90 tutors on its roster, each with a master's degree or higher.

The program's tutors thrive on making information fun and digestible for students who have lost interest in school, or who may have depression or learning disabilities. They abide by the principles of education authors like Alfie Kohn and John Holt, who value unconditional support and respect for students.

"You want a program that will humanize the learning experience and recognize the magnificence of the children's brains and how powerful they are," said Jackman.

Central Park Tutors' intake system is very thorough, with each student receiving a custom plan and well-matched tutor. Despite its name, the service has worked with students from New York to Shanghai. However, most of the tutors are trained and based in New York.

We looked at many options while choosing the best online tutoring services. Over time, we refined our criteria and had to leave off certain programs, including the following:

  • BrainStorm Tutoring & Arts : BrainStorm is an award-winning tutoring program that uses a hands-on approach. It didn't make it to the top because it is primarily based in New York, New Jersey, and Branson, Missouri, and has only just started to gain national traction. BrainStorm is a great option for kids who need help with basic subjects, as well as ancillary skills like time management, intellectual stamina, and self-confidence.
  • K12.com , Skooli.com , Tutor.com , and Wyzant : We did not include these four popular programs because they ask parents to independently choose tutors from a list of profiles. This format may be preferable for some families, but we only selected programs that utilize a deliberate matchmaking system. These services may be good options for parents and students who want complete control over the tutor selection process.

school homework help online

Not all online tutoring services are created equal, and not all of them will suit your child's specific needs. There is an almost infinite number of programs online, and there is no one set of guidelines. Parents do have plenty of criteria to work with, though. Here's how we evaluated the tutoring programs featured in this guide:

Are the tutors qualified?

It's important to look for qualified tutors who generally have a degree in their field and a background in education. Tutors might opt for certification under the National Tutoring Association or the Association for the Tutoring and Coaching Profession , but there are no laws that regulate tutors or require these certifications.

Does the program offer shorter tutoring sessions?

Lubovich said that two-hour sessions are rare — as they should be — because they're pushing the absolute limit. Sessions should also include some breaks for physical movement, especially when it comes to young children.

Is there a contract?

Companies should give parents a contract complete with expectations, and they should comply with all children's online privacy laws .

Is the approach holistic and transparent?

A good tutoring program looks at the whole student rather than simply their grades or test scores. Look for services that assess children in advance and deliberately match them with tutors based on expertise and personality.

Tutoring should also take into account everything that is going on in a kid's life, such as trauma at home, not just scores. Frequent, transparent check-ins between tutors and parents are essential.

"You should be able to ask questions," Jackman said. "What is the staff like, is the learning process transparent, can I come take a peek or see a recorded video? Parents should feel empowered."

The holistic approach is particularly crucial for marginalized students. At a baseline, children with disabilities should be matched with specialized, qualified tutors. However, Jackman argued that tutoring companies should go beyond that by embracing diversity in every form, whether that means having a diverse staff, requiring anti-bias training among tutors, or offering discounts or equipment to lower-income students.

"It's not just about giving kids information, but celebrating who they are," Jackman said.

  • Ages: Grades K-12

"Choose if you can pay" model

Nonprofit service

Covers K-12 students

Provides personalized study plans

Less comprehensive than some other online tutoring services

No strict vetting process for tutors

While online tutoring programs can be invaluable for many students looking to achieve their learning goals, they’re often pricey and unattainable for many families. The nonprofit Learn To Be aims to bridge that gap with a "choose if you can pay" model for its one-on-one online tutoring in a digital classroom.

The company's tutors have served more than 7,000 students since the nonprofit launched in 2012. The program offers math, science, reading, and English tutoring to students in kindergarten through 12th grade from qualified families. Parents regularly report that their children’s test scores and GPAs improved significantly after enrolling in Learn To Be.

If your family needs affordable tutoring, head to Learn To Be’s website to fill out an enrollment form. If you’re approved, your child will be matched with a tutor by email, and they will create a personalized study plan from there.

Compare Online Tutoring Services

Guide to choosing the best online tutoring service.

You'll want to sort through a number of features to determine the best online tutoring service, but it's important to first identify the purposes for which you need a tutor and be sure a service's offerings align with your needs. You'll also want to consider the technology your student will need to use.

For example, you may seek a tutor to prep for a specific standardized test, or you may want a tutor to help a student struggling with a specific subject. Providers of online tutoring services may include:

  • Qualified teachers
  • Subject matter experts

They teach students in one-on-one sessions via video chat, phone, or even online chat and email. You may want to build a long-term relationship with a specific tutor over time, or you might use a tutoring service that allows you to contact a variety of instructors at any time, day or night.

While cost is often a consideration, value may be more important to you and your student. Some services like Chegg Study, our top pick, aren't free, but they're more affordable than other programs. A more comprehensive online tutoring service, with experts and high-quality resources like practice tests, may be worth the added expense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should use online tutoring services.

Reasons for using an online tutoring service include both the need to improve in a specific subject and the need for academic enrichment. Some people want to prepare for a standardized test or focus on specific tasks, like writing college entrance essays.

Is Quick Homework Help Available Through Online Tutoring?

Yes, online tutoring services do serve students who need instant homework help. Some online tutoring services give students access to a subject matter expert at any time, day or night. Quick-answer services may be more cost-effective than the longer-term tutoring plans.

Is Paying for a Tutor Worth It?

The answer likely depends on your family budget and your reasons for hiring a tutor. The best value comes when you've chosen a qualified tutor with whom the one-on-one sessions work well, and you're careful to support the effort at home. Check with your student's teacher, too, to be sure tutoring is worth it.

We selected these programs for our list of the best online tutoring services based on the variety of available subjects and tutoring/teaching expertise, along with quality, affordability, schedule flexibility, tutor availability, and user-friendly technology. We chose some tutoring services because they had a mix of all or many of these elements, according to users. Others made it onto the list because of a specific benefit that made them stand out. For example, Preply earned a spot on the list because of its laser focus on assisting language learners of all stripes. Likewise, Smarthinking is ideal for students who need to sharpen their writing skills.

Her daughter had a slight learning disability (mild ADHD), and as a result of her struggles, she was ready to move her daughter down to Algebra 1. Plus they offer some sample math problems and English language arts exercises, as well as some tips for parents to foster learning at home. Online Tutoring

The convenience of tutoring online and its ability to incorporate the many audio and visual features that traditional classrooms lack allows students to enrich their educational experience

Today’s Students are Comfortable with Online Education

These days, technology is such an inherent aspect of students’ lives that the number of online classes, tutorials and educational videos on the web has grown rapidly. Online tutoring is one such educational resource students have turned to for assistance. The convenience of tutoring online and its ability to incorporate the many audio and visual features that traditional classrooms lack allows students to enrich their educational experience.

Our online tutoring programs create a fun and encouraging learning environment where students enjoy and look forward to receiving academic instruction.

Online Learning is Statistically Better

Not only are students more comfortable with the online setting, but studies consistently show that those who engage in online learning tend to perform just as well, if not better, than their peers who are only exposed to traditional methods. In a study completed by Dr. Elaine Allen and Dr. Jeff Seamen in 2012, 77% of academic leaders “rated the learning outcomes in online education as the same or superior to those in face-to-face [settings].” Another study completed by the U.S. Department of Education supported this conclusion. They found that, on average, students who completed all or part of a course online ranked in the 59th percentile whereas students in a traditional class ranked in the 50th percentile. Students who have joined SchoolTutoring Academy can attest to the success of online tutoring services and their guaranteed results.

Work One-on-One with an Online Tutor

SchoolTutoring Academy offers online tutoring services that help students from the elementary to high school level. We provide students with one-on-one, online tutoring sessions with a live and certified tutor who can create lessons designed around the needs of the student. Students are paired with the same tutor for every session they schedule, which helps students build a rapport with their tutor and gives the tutor an idea of the strengths and weaknesses of the student. The use of webcam also makes the sessions more interactive and helps develop the classroom environment.

Contact our Academic Directors Today at 1-877-545-7737 to Discuss your Child’s Strengths and Areas for Improvement.

Take advantage of the many features of our online tutoring platform.

SchoolTutoring Academy incorporates a number of media components into each live, online tutoring session so that students of any learning style can succeed. Our shared whiteboard space allows for the student and our tutor to work on a math problem or essay together and see what the other is doing. Students and tutors also have the ability to upload files onto the whiteboard, which can be used to upload assignments or essays that need to be proofread. All sessions are also recorded and the whiteboard saved as a PDF file for future reference.

Learn at Your Own Pace

Students who join SchoolTutoring Academy benefit from being able to schedule sessions with their online tutor at their convenience. With many students involved in extracurricular activities and other afterschool programs, being able to work their tutoring sessions around their busy day makes tutoring online an ideal option. Students also have the ability to schedule sessions on demand; our ability to accommodate students at any time is especially crucial for students during exams. Furthermore, since students are working one-on-one with a live online tutor, lessons are designed to match the pace of the student. Students will neither feel rushed in learning new material nor feel as though their tutor is moving too slowly.

At SchoolTutoring Academy, we provide students with the best possible education at their convenience. We offer tutoring by subject type to students at all grade levels:

  • Special Education
  • Standardized Testing
  • Essay Writing
  • Study Skills
  • Language Instruction

Testimonials and Case Studies from Our Parents

SchoolTutoring Academy regularly receives letters and emails from parents about their experience with our programs. Have a great story or anecdote about your experience with any of SchoolTutoring Academy’s programs? We want to hear about it !

SchoolTutoring Academy has played an important role in improving our son’s confidence and attitude towards school. His grades have also improved steadily throughout the school year.

My daughter was very self-conscious about her difficulties with the math section of the SAT. SchoolTutoring Academy’s Academic Directors created an action plan that boosted my daughter’s score and confidence level.

SchoolTutoring Academy has not only improved my son’s standardized test scores but also his high school math and English grades. Test Prep Academy has not only improved my son’s standardized test scores but also his high school math and English grades.

SchoolTutoring Academy Increased My SAT Score By 200 Points

My son’s math marks in high school have always been weak so I found it very beneficial that his ACT tutor worked on solidifying his fundamentals while prepping for the ACT.

SchoolTutoring Academy gave my daughter the confidence she needed to boost her SAT score Thank you!

SchoolTutoring has played an important role in improving our son’s confidence and attitude towards school. His grades have also improved steadily throughout the school year.

My daughter was able to improve her test scores after a few months of tutoring with SchoolTutoring. However, while raising test scores is great, the real payoff is in the self-confidence that she gained.

I just wanted to send a quick note to say thank-you! My son is very impressed with his tutor and looks forward to each session. What’s particularly amazing about this is our son has never really looked forward to math or school for that matter!

For those who balk at the high cost of online tutoring, Learn to Be is a nonprofit that offers free and low-cost services for students who need it. (You choose if you can pay.) preply

Preply is a boon to students who want to learn or practice another language with a native speaker; it hosts tutors from all over the world who are fluent in Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Japanese, Hebrew, Urdu — you name it. Tutors are contractors who set their own rates, so the prices vary.

3rd and 4th graders to get free tutoring under expansion of N.J. program

Another 57 New Jersey school districts and charter schools will receive a total of $7 million for high-impact tutoring , the state Department of Education announced last week, more than five months after the program was originally slated to begin.

In November, 243 districts and charter schools received $41 million for tutoring under a $52 million effort Gov. Phil Murphy announced last February. The education department did not immediately respond to a question about how the remaining $4 million would be spent.

The grants, backed by federal COVID relief money, cover small-group tutoring sessions at least twice a week over 10 weeks, which has yielded impressive results elsewhere.

The tutoring is primarily for students in third and fourth grade, but school districts can expand their programs to additional grades. (See the full list of 57 districts receiving tutoring money below.)

Districts can use the funds for their own staff or to hire outside tutoring companies. Some districts learned late in October, when the education department issued guidance, that they would have to collect bids from tutoring providers to do the work.

State officials said some districts have already seen success with their tutoring programs.

Franklin Township School District in Somerset County, which was awarded a grant in November, has tutored 86 students in person and virtually for 12 weeks. Student test scores rose on average 6% in English Language Arts and 13% in math, state officials said.

The Bergenfield school district in Bergen County ran 30 tutoring groups with students each receiving 36 sessions. Almost all saw academic growth, with some catching up an entire year in their proficiency levels after the tutoring, state officials said.

“These High Impact Tutoring grants give our schools access to a powerful tool that can accelerate learning for students throughout New Jersey,” said Kevin Dehmer, the state’s Acting Commissioner of Education. “Our efforts are focused on proven approaches that are designed to place students in the best position for academic growth. We know the need is there, and now we have the program in place to help address the need.”

Florida education officials warn against online tutoring site

The Florida Department of Education is warning school districts about a tutoring program used around the state called Tutor.com .

The Education Commissioner, Manny Diaz sent a strongly worded letter to school district superintendents, charter school governing boards, and state college presidents saying they should not be utilizing the company.

Diaz said he's concerned that information provided on the site may be at risk. The company has been around since 2000. It's mission is to help students connect with screened, qualified, expert tutors that can provide personalized one-on-one instruction.

According to the company’s website, they are controlled by Primavera Holdings Limited, which is a firm owned by Chinese nationals.

The Palm Beach County Library system has been using the site since 2003. All you need to be able to use this is your library card number.

Commisoner Diaz wrote in part quote "Let me be clear, school districts, charter schools and state colleges should not contract with companies that have ties to foreign countries of concern and risk compromising student data."

This comes after parents in Santa Rosa County raised concerns, not only about the foreign ties, but also about how the tutoring service collects personal information like parents' names, addresses, phone numbers, and birthdays.

Families in our area say they don’t feel comfortable with information about their children possibly being shared with a foreign company.

“Personally, I don't want my kids information out there more than it needs to be like, I don't even consent to them being photographed, like getting pictures at school, or like anything past their information going past their doctor's office," said Mom Britany Cold.

“I have a granddaughter and I have a grandson. They are ages like six, seven years old, so I'd be very concerned they (Tutor.com) use their information from any other country," said grandmother Elizabeth Vonatakis.

Tutor.com released a statement to CBS12 News that says in part: "We are disappointed by the statement by the Florida Department of Education, which inaccurately implies that personal data of those who use our tutoring services could be transferred to China. Safeguarding U.S. student data is of utmost importance to us, and our data-protection practices are among the most stringent and well-enforced of any in education services. Tutor.com is an American company, incorporated 24 years ago in the state of Delaware and headquartered in New York City. As an American company, Tutor.com cannot be compelled to—and does not—release personal data of U.S. students and families to China or any foreign government. Safeguarding U.S. Student data is of utmost importance to us, and our data-protection practices are among the most stringent and well-enforced of any in education services.”

As for our local school districts, the following do not use Tutor.com:

  • Palm Beach County
  • Martin County
  • St. Lucie County

We're still waiting to hear back from the following school districts:

  • Indian River County
  • Okeechobee County

But if your child has a library card, then they have access to this service through the library's website.

Right now there is no word on if the Palm Beach County Library System intends to continue using it.

Republicans in Congress are also taking action against the Chinese-owned tutoring service, by introducing legislation to ban the Department of Defense from using it for U.S. Military members and their families.

D.C. mayor shares $4.8 million proposal to keep tutoring programs

The announcement comes in the midst of a tense budget season and fears of cuts.

school homework help online

D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) said she wants to spend $4.8 million to sustain intensive tutoring programs for students next year, extending a multiyear effort to help children recover from the setbacks they experienced during virtual learning.

Bowser said Wednesday the request will be part of her budget proposal, which also includes a 12 percent hike to the per-pupil funding formula that largely determines how much money schools get. The increase would flush schools with an additional $341 million, but it comes as the city’s finances are strained by higher teacher salaries, rising costs due to inflation, flat revenue and the need to use local money to cover expenses that were previously funded by one-time federal pandemic aid.

The combination of those factors means dollars will not go as far as they used to, officials said. Some school leaders in recent weeks have said they expect to cut positions .

Bowser called this budget “by far the most difficult” one she’ll submit to the D.C. Council. “Even with this increase, this year our schools will also be making tough decisions,” she said.

The mayor’s announcement about the funding for high-impact tutoring — a specific kind of academic help that consists of frequent, small-group sessions — came at a citywide summit on the topic. She touted the effort’s success, including a recent Stanford University study that found that students in D.C. were more likely to attend school when they had sessions. “Last school year, we found that students enrolled in high-impact tutoring were likely to reach their math and literacy goals,” Bowser said.

The new dollars, however, would replace just some of the $33 million in federal aid that the city has spent over the last three years to offer intensive tutoring to students in need of the most help — including $16.6 million this school year. The last tranche of Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief, more than $386 million in D.C. and also known as ESSER III, must be spent or planned by September before it goes away.

The elimination of the pandemic dollars will have varying effects on schools. At Moten Elementary School in Southeast Washington, teachers will continue to do the bulk of tutoring, Akela Dogbe, its principal, said at the Wednesday summit. Justin Lessek, founding executive director of the Sojourner Truth Public Charter School, said that budget restrictions have prevented the school from expanding tutoring. Schools that contract nonprofits or universities to bring in tutors may have to scale back, other leaders said.

Tutoring programs in D.C. mirror efforts seen throughout the country. School districts, after the worst of the pandemic, quickly built and expanded tutoring efforts to help students catch up academically.

Bowser also proposed new money for high school programs — including $5 million for dual enrollment and student internship programs and the Advanced Technical Center, a facility in Northeast Washington that trains high-schoolers for careers in nursing and cybersecurity. She said an additional $17 million could be used to open a health clinic at the site to offer services to residents and training for students.

She also shared a $600,000 proposal to open a second Advanced Technical Center, at the Whitman-Walker Max Robinson Center in Southeast Washington.

The mayor is slated to ask the council to approve a $2.7 billion proposal to support the city’s traditional public and charter schools. She was scheduled to present that plan — along with the city’s entire budget — to the 13-member body Wednesday morning, but the presentation was canceled .

What the Data Says About Pandemic School Closures, Four Years Later

The more time students spent in remote instruction, the further they fell behind. And, experts say, extended closures did little to stop the spread of Covid.

Sarah Mervosh

By Sarah Mervosh ,  Claire Cain Miller and Francesca Paris

Four years ago this month, schools nationwide began to shut down, igniting one of the most polarizing and partisan debates of the pandemic.

Some schools, often in Republican-led states and rural areas, reopened by fall 2020. Others, typically in large cities and states led by Democrats, would not fully reopen for another year.

A variety of data — about children’s academic outcomes and about the spread of Covid-19 — has accumulated in the time since. Today, there is broad acknowledgment among many public health and education experts that extended school closures did not significantly stop the spread of Covid, while the academic harms for children have been large and long-lasting.

While poverty and other factors also played a role, remote learning was a key driver of academic declines during the pandemic, research shows — a finding that held true across income levels.

Source: Fahle, Kane, Patterson, Reardon, Staiger and Stuart, “ School District and Community Factors Associated With Learning Loss During the COVID-19 Pandemic .” Score changes are measured from 2019 to 2022. In-person means a district offered traditional in-person learning, even if not all students were in-person.

“There’s fairly good consensus that, in general, as a society, we probably kept kids out of school longer than we should have,” said Dr. Sean O’Leary, a pediatric infectious disease specialist who helped write guidance for the American Academy of Pediatrics, which recommended in June 2020 that schools reopen with safety measures in place.

There were no easy decisions at the time. Officials had to weigh the risks of an emerging virus against the academic and mental health consequences of closing schools. And even schools that reopened quickly, by the fall of 2020, have seen lasting effects.

But as experts plan for the next public health emergency, whatever it may be, a growing body of research shows that pandemic school closures came at a steep cost to students.

The longer schools were closed, the more students fell behind.

At the state level, more time spent in remote or hybrid instruction in the 2020-21 school year was associated with larger drops in test scores, according to a New York Times analysis of school closure data and results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress , an authoritative exam administered to a national sample of fourth- and eighth-grade students.

At the school district level, that finding also holds, according to an analysis of test scores from third through eighth grade in thousands of U.S. districts, led by researchers at Stanford and Harvard. In districts where students spent most of the 2020-21 school year learning remotely, they fell more than half a grade behind in math on average, while in districts that spent most of the year in person they lost just over a third of a grade.

( A separate study of nearly 10,000 schools found similar results.)

Such losses can be hard to overcome, without significant interventions. The most recent test scores, from spring 2023, show that students, overall, are not caught up from their pandemic losses , with larger gaps remaining among students that lost the most ground to begin with. Students in districts that were remote or hybrid the longest — at least 90 percent of the 2020-21 school year — still had almost double the ground to make up compared with students in districts that allowed students back for most of the year.

Some time in person was better than no time.

As districts shifted toward in-person learning as the year went on, students that were offered a hybrid schedule (a few hours or days a week in person, with the rest online) did better, on average, than those in places where school was fully remote, but worse than those in places that had school fully in person.

Some schools return online, as Covid-19 cases surge. Vaccinations start for high-priority groups.

Teachers are eligible for the Covid vaccine in more than half of states.

Most districts end the year in-person or hybrid.

Source: Burbio audit of more than 1,200 school districts representing 47 percent of U.S. K-12 enrollment. Note: Learning mode was defined based on the most in-person option available to students.

Income and family background also made a big difference.

A second factor associated with academic declines during the pandemic was a community’s poverty level. Comparing districts with similar remote learning policies, poorer districts had steeper losses.

But in-person learning still mattered: Looking at districts with similar poverty levels, remote learning was associated with greater declines.

A community’s poverty rate and the length of school closures had a “roughly equal” effect on student outcomes, said Sean F. Reardon, a professor of poverty and inequality in education at Stanford, who led a district-level analysis with Thomas J. Kane, an economist at Harvard.

Score changes are measured from 2019 to 2022. Poorest and richest are the top and bottom 20% of districts by percent of students on free/reduced lunch. Mostly in-person and mostly remote are districts that offered traditional in-person learning for more than 90 percent or less than 10 percent of the 2020-21 year.

But the combination — poverty and remote learning — was particularly harmful. For each week spent remote, students in poor districts experienced steeper losses in math than peers in richer districts.

That is notable, because poor districts were also more likely to stay remote for longer .

Some of the country’s largest poor districts are in Democratic-leaning cities that took a more cautious approach to the virus. Poor areas, and Black and Hispanic communities , also suffered higher Covid death rates, making many families and teachers in those districts hesitant to return.

“We wanted to survive,” said Sarah Carpenter, the executive director of Memphis Lift, a parent advocacy group in Memphis, where schools were closed until spring 2021 .

“But I also think, man, looking back, I wish our kids could have gone back to school much quicker,” she added, citing the academic effects.

Other things were also associated with worse student outcomes, including increased anxiety and depression among adults in children’s lives, and the overall restriction of social activity in a community, according to the Stanford and Harvard research .

Even short closures had long-term consequences for children.

While being in school was on average better for academic outcomes, it wasn’t a guarantee. Some districts that opened early, like those in Cherokee County, Ga., a suburb of Atlanta, and Hanover County, Va., lost significant learning and remain behind.

At the same time, many schools are seeing more anxiety and behavioral outbursts among students. And chronic absenteeism from school has surged across demographic groups .

These are signs, experts say, that even short-term closures, and the pandemic more broadly, had lasting effects on the culture of education.

“There was almost, in the Covid era, a sense of, ‘We give up, we’re just trying to keep body and soul together,’ and I think that was corrosive to the higher expectations of schools,” said Margaret Spellings, an education secretary under President George W. Bush who is now chief executive of the Bipartisan Policy Center.

Closing schools did not appear to significantly slow Covid’s spread.

Perhaps the biggest question that hung over school reopenings: Was it safe?

That was largely unknown in the spring of 2020, when schools first shut down. But several experts said that had changed by the fall of 2020, when there were initial signs that children were less likely to become seriously ill, and growing evidence from Europe and parts of the United States that opening schools, with safety measures, did not lead to significantly more transmission.

“Infectious disease leaders have generally agreed that school closures were not an important strategy in stemming the spread of Covid,” said Dr. Jeanne Noble, who directed the Covid response at the U.C.S.F. Parnassus emergency department.

Politically, though, there remains some disagreement about when, exactly, it was safe to reopen school.

Republican governors who pushed to open schools sooner have claimed credit for their approach, while Democrats and teachers’ unions have emphasized their commitment to safety and their investment in helping students recover.

“I do believe it was the right decision,” said Jerry T. Jordan, president of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, which resisted returning to school in person over concerns about the availability of vaccines and poor ventilation in school buildings. Philadelphia schools waited to partially reopen until the spring of 2021 , a decision Mr. Jordan believes saved lives.

“It doesn’t matter what is going on in the building and how much people are learning if people are getting the virus and running the potential of dying,” he said.

Pandemic school closures offer lessons for the future.

Though the next health crisis may have different particulars, with different risk calculations, the consequences of closing schools are now well established, experts say.

In the future, infectious disease experts said, they hoped decisions would be guided more by epidemiological data as it emerged, taking into account the trade-offs.

“Could we have used data to better guide our decision making? Yes,” said Dr. Uzma N. Hasan, division chief of pediatric infectious diseases at RWJBarnabas Health in Livingston, N.J. “Fear should not guide our decision making.”

Source: Fahle, Kane, Patterson, Reardon, Staiger and Stuart, “ School District and Community Factors Associated With Learning Loss During the Covid-19 Pandemic. ”

The study used estimates of learning loss from the Stanford Education Data Archive . For closure lengths, the study averaged district-level estimates of time spent in remote and hybrid learning compiled by the Covid-19 School Data Hub (C.S.D.H.) and American Enterprise Institute (A.E.I.) . The A.E.I. data defines remote status by whether there was an in-person or hybrid option, even if some students chose to remain virtual. In the C.S.D.H. data set, districts are defined as remote if “all or most” students were virtual.

An earlier version of this article misstated a job description of Dr. Jeanne Noble. She directed the Covid response at the U.C.S.F. Parnassus emergency department. She did not direct the Covid response for the University of California, San Francisco health system.

In the wake of the devastating attack at Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russian authorities, under President Vladimir Putin’s directive, have initiated a stringent roundup of illegal migrants, specifically targeting those for potential conscription into the conflict in Ukraine.

This action follows closely after the incident which resulted in the death of at least 140 individuals, attributed to a group of attackers identified as Tajik nationals.

The operation saw security forces, alongside military enlistment officers, conducting document checks at a large warehouse operated by online retailer Wildberries in Elektrostal, near Moscow.

Reports indicate that numerous migrant workers were subjected to this abrupt verification process, leading to the detention of at least 40 individuals under the gaze of armed personnel.

The government’s decision to mobilize migrants for war efforts comes amid heightened tensions and an uptick in xenophobic sentiment, particularly against Central Asian migrants.

The embassy of Tajikistan has issued advisories to its nationals, urging caution and limiting outdoor activities unless necessary.

Migrants face a dire choice: incarceration, deportation, or conscription into the war in Ukraine, with some expressing fear of involuntary military service despite holding Russian citizenship.

The roundup at the Wildberries warehouse is reportedly just the beginning of a broader initiative to recruit more individuals for the ongoing military campaign in Ukraine.

The BBC highlights the increasing instances of violence and discrimination faced by migrants, which have escalated following the Crocus City Hall tragedy.

In response to these developments, state and national officials are calling for stringent audits of labor migrants and recent recipients of Russian citizenship.

This includes prohibitions against hiring foreign workers in certain sectors and demands for a comprehensive review of migrants’ status within the country.

The attack, alongside subsequent actions against migrants, has drawn widespread criticism and raised concerns about escalating racial tensions and the safety of migrants in Russia.

The incident has also prompted discussions on the implications for regional security and the role of foreign nationals in the conflict in Ukraine.
