Are you up to it?

Therefore, do not attempt a trip to the Valley if you are unfit, suffer from a heart condition, or are at risk of one. Hospitals and emergency services are hours away. Discuss this trip with your doctor before you attempt it.

If you still want to attempt a hike, it is highly recommended that you use a sturdy hiking stick. You may find a group of children at Kel competing to rent one (or two) out to you for a price of Rs 30-50 each, depending on your negotiation skills, but it is better to take your own.

Make sure you take regular prescription medication with you. You may not be able to locate a pharmacy, and if you somehow manage to find one, it may not be as well-stocked as you would like. Also remember to take along painkillers, stomach pills, and any other medication that you think you may need.

Take your CNIC with you!

This may seem obvious, but believe me when I tell you that it is absolutely critical in the Neelum Valley. Due to the region's close proximity to India – at certain points you can catch a glimpse of an Indian army check post or two on the other side of the Neelum River - access to the region is restricted to Pakistani citizens. Others are obligated to present a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to gain access, but these are not easily obtained, and are treated with suspicion by inspecting officers. This makes it all the more important for you to be able to prove that you are indeed a Pakistani citizen, either by carrying a valid, original CNIC or a Pakistani passport.

Don't take this lightly. There are army check posts at several points, where you will be required to show your CNIC before you are allowed to pass through. Even large groups are not spared - at one check post, an army officer entered our bus and checked the CNICs of almost all the 27 occupants one by one, the only member of the group that was passed over being a two-year-old boy who could barely speak his own name. I managed to strike up a conversation with an army official and inquired about the acceptability of NICOPs, and was informed that they would only be considered acceptable if they had a Pakistani address on them. Yet, despite the fact that a friend of mine had such a NICOP, the tour operator I used was reluctant to include her, worried about possible problems.

Give yourself enough time for sightseeing

Many tour operators are promoting two-day or three-day tours to Neelum Valley. But you will need at least four to five days to thoroughly explore the valley without tiring yourself out, so before you sign up for any tour, carefully vet the itinerary to ensure that you have enough time for sightseeing. Keep in mind that Muzaffarabad is an eight to ten-hour drive away from Lahore (four to six hours from Islamabad), and it will be another four to five hours before you reach Keran (assuming you find the roads clear). Whether you opt for a tour operator or whether you go on your own, give yourself enough days to make the trip worthwhile without requiring you to spend the bulk of your trip on the road.

Personal care tips

As with all mountainous regions, the climatic conditions of the Himalayas are vastly different from those in the plains and in the cities, and may take city-dwellers completely off-guard. The rays of the sun are harsher, the air pressure is lower, and the temperature colder.

Therefore, unless you want to come home with a glorious sunburn, don't forget the sunblock at home. A minimum of SPF 50 is recommended.

Overexposure to the sun's UV rays can result in sunburned corneas, which can significantly impair vision for up to 48 hours. Since this condition is exacerbated by contact lenses, avoid wearing them during daylight hours. Protect your eyes from the sun's glare with a pair of tight-fitting sunglasses that won't easily fall off, or a pair of prescription sunglasses if necessary.

Pack moisturiser with you and use it liberally. The sun and the wind can seriously dehydrate your skin.

What to wear

Invest in a pair of comfortable trainers or hiking boots. Buy a new pair as the cushioning and soles of older shoes may wear out with time, affecting their grip.

Avoid clothing that constricts movement. Pin headscarves securely, and avoid flowing dupattas or shawls that will only get in your way. Stumbling over your dupatta at altitudes of 8,000 feet can prove to be fatal. Dress in layers of tight-fitting clothing and shed them as necessary according to the weather.

Food and drink

The dry weather and the close proximity to the sun put you at greater risk of dehydration. Drink three to four litres of water a day, mixing at least two of these with ORS. You may not feel thirsty, but drink anyway. Bottles of water may be obtained from the bazaars or the guest houses where you plan on staying, but do note that quite often this water has been bottled from a local stream.

Eat regularly, regardless of whether you feel hungry or not, to keep your energy levels up. Avoid salty snacks such as crisps or nimko which will only contribute to dehydration. Fruits and vegetables are your best bet. Keep sweets, candies or packets of juice at hand in case of dizzy spells or drops in sugar levels.

Mobile phone connectivity

There is no network coverage by any of the major mobile networks beyond the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project, located some 22 km ahead of Muzaffarabad. Also, some networks do not offer 3G services in Azad Kashmir, so if you find your mobile phone has lost a signal during this part of the journey, switch it over to GSM-only mode or WCDMA/GSM mode about half an hour before you reach Muzaffarabad. It is highly recommended that you do so since this will be your last chance to communicate with your friends and family until your return.

The lack of connectivity makes it seem as if Neelum Valley is the perfect place to unwind and "get away from it all". However, there are understandably times when you want to let your friends and family know how you are. If this is a concern, you can purchase a SIM from one of the several franchises of state-owned/operated SCOM, a local telecommunications operator that provides Internet, landline and mobile phone services in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan. This is the only mobile network that works in Neelum Valley, and top-up cards can be obtained from the bazaars. You will also find PCOs in the bazaar, enabling you to call home if required. A kind shopkeeper may even let you use his phone without expecting any payment in return. I found this out when I asked one of them to direct me to a PCO. He asked me to step inside, leading me to assume that there was a telephone installed in his shop. He then asked me to wait while he "made arrangements". After five minutes, he handed me his mobile phone, and I found out that he had only asked me to wait in order to enable him to top up his mobile phone balance. My attempts to reimburse him for the mobile phone card he had purchased on my account caused so much offense I was forced to apologise and retract my offer.

Navigation tips

Due to the lack of mobile phone coverage, Google Maps will not be available. It is therefore highly recommended to plan out your routes before you leave home. The Android version of Google Maps does offer the option to download routes so that they are available in offline mode. While this is a useful feature, you also need to keep in mind that weather conditions are unpredictable and the conditions of the roads are uncertain- this means that landslides and roadblocks can render the Google Maps routes useless. The locals are helpful, however, so if you do need directions, just ask.

This lack of connectivity also means that if you are separated from your travelling companions, you are going to have a very hard time trying to locate them. If you are in a small group, stick together. If you are in a larger group, agree on a meeting time and place and make sure everyone knows how to get there. If you arrive early, wait for the others to join you. Do not wander off!

Facilities at hotels and guest houses

While the local boom in tourism has resulted in guest houses cropping up all over the place, the dearth of utilities means that tourists will have a hard time of it if they are unprepared. None of the guest houses I stayed at had a regular supply of electricity, running water, or even gas to cook meals and to keep warm. Some guest houses are equipped with generators, but due to difficulties in obtaining fuel, these are used sparingly. Take a fully charged and reliable power bank with you to recharge your mobile phone. Do your research and buy a reputable brand, as cheap ones can damage your gadgets. A 20,000 mAH power bank, while it may seem a bit excessive to some, can fully charge a mobile phone up to five times, or a Kindle Fire HDX 7 up to three times.

Do not expect hotels to provide you with hot or even warm water. You will only get ice-cold water in the bathroom, so no matter how tired you feel, you may want to reconsider taking a shower. Some hotels or guest houses will oblige by providing you with buckets of hot water in return for payment, but this is not a service you can count on. If you do manage to get a bucket of hot water, it will not be long before it turns cold, so you need to be quick about using it. Another thing you need to keep in mind is that not all hotels and guest houses are able to offer commodes, so anyone who is unable to use an Indian-style toilet may have to hunt around a bit for suitable accommodation.

You may need to dress in layers to keep warm at night. While hotels and guest houses will be able to provide you with a comfortable bed and blanket, they generally will not allow you to use heaters in your room, and they may not be able to provide extra blankets if they are fully booked. Since temperatures can drop to 4 or 5 degrees Celsius in April, and fall below zero in the winter, extra layers of clothing may be necessary.

ATMs and other amenities

Guest houses, restaurants, hotels, and retailers do not accept credit cards or debit cards. And since you will be hard-pressed to find ATMs in the valley, it is best to carry cash. The last stop at which you can count on finding ATMs is Muzaffarabad, so it is recommended to visit an ATM there before setting out for the Valley. Of course, if you are part of a tour group in which transportation, boarding, and meals have been paid for, you can get by with a smaller amount to cover miscellaneous expenses not included in the tour cost.

Expect the unexpected!

On my first trip to the Valley, a landslide blocked access to our destination, and we were forced to turn back without getting very far. On my second trip, the coach carrying us back to Lahore from Muzaffarabad broke down in the middle of the night and delayed our return by several hours. So remember that things don't always go according to plan, and you should be prepared for unexpected delays and cancellations.

Chitta Katha Lake is 2 hrs jeep ride to base and then a hiking trek of 6 hrs, it’s very hard to travel for families only full fit person could conquer this lake.

10.Toabutt ( Guraiz Valley)

Taobutt is the last place of Neelum valley, places to visit during the visit from Kel to Taobutt are Helmet, Sardar, Phulawai, and Janawai. Taobutt is famous for landscape only 3 or 4 hotels are available for stay.

I visited Neelam valley from early Aug. 2016 and found are rrally heaven on earth . Peoples are very polite and copprative . Hotels are not very fine but reasonable .Goods and services are not expensive . Arangkel is most beautiful and lovely place to visit.

Neelum Valley is a 144 km long bow-shaped thick forested region in Azad Kashmir in Pakistan. It is named after the Neelam river, which flows serpentinely down hills to merge itself into the river Jhelum at Domail. Domai l, the confluence of two mighty rivers, presents highly fascinating scene of youthful embrace. The valley is situated in the north-east of Muzaffarabad, running parallel to Kaghan Valley. The two valleys are only separated by snow-covered peaks, some over 4,000 meters (13,000 ft) above sea level.

This is one of the most beautiful valleys of Azaad Kashmir, and it hosts several brooks, freshwater streams, forests, lush green mountains, and a river. Here, you see cataracts falling down the mountains; their milky-white waters flowing over the roads and splashing against the rocks, before commingling with the muddy waters of River Neelum. The geographical features enhance the natural beauty of the Valley. Its elevation, a mere 2,000 feet at the start, gradually rises till it attains a respectable height of 8,000 feet. On a number of places, the local population has built rope crossings on the river. NEELUM VALLEY-THE PARADISE OF KASHMIR

Neelum valley is one of the beautiful places of Azad Kashmir and it’s named after the river which has curves like snake and has blue color. It is also called as the “PARASIDE OF KASHMIR”. There is a contradiction that this valley was named after a precious stone called Neelum. Neelum Valley is located in the Kashmir Region and to the North & the North East of Muzaffarabad and running parallel to the Kaghan Valley. It is different from it by snowstorm covered mountain which are 4000 meters higher than the ocean level. It contains about 370 large and small villages. It mostly contains hills and mountains with great valleys. The valley has thick forest, streams and rivers. This valley is dipped in most amazing beauty and attracts lots of tourists from within the country and other foreign countries as well. The valley can be approached from two different points. One from Kaghan Valley and the other is Noori Top. Besides these two it has many minor passes as well.

The district of Neelum valley starts 43 km from Muzaffarabad. The area is also famous for its mineral mines from that particular locality mineral are being tranposrted to other cities of Pakistan. In addition to that there is also LOC (LINE OF CONTROL) where relatives can cross the bridge and can meet their relatives on the other side of the bridge twice a month. .

This land also has many local fruits which are of great taste including Apples, Apricots, Walnuts and Plums which are famous. A large number of tourists visit it in summers. The whole valley gives fascinating and beautiful scenery. There is also a mountain “SARWALI” (6326 meters) which is one of the highest mountains in Azad Kashmir. The valley include lush green forests and high altitude lakes makes the surrounding heavenly and it is like a dream come true for the people who visit it. The snow capped mountains and the fast flowing Neelum river all make us believe that we are in some part of Switzerland. Many of the tourists who are interested in mountain tourism also come and enjoy here. The river is also famous for its fishing and it has Trout fish in abundance.

Some of its famous places like Shounter Pass, Chita Khata, Ratti Gali, Baboon, Noori Top, Sharda, Kel, Surgon and many more are mentioned by famous tourists like Mustansar Hussain Tararr etc. Tararr even wrote a travelogue on after visiting there. The three rivers present in this area are Jhelum, Neelum and Poonch.

The people of districts Kotli,Mirpur & Bhimber, are simple, truthful and deeply attached to their land. The culture of this area resembles to that of the adjoining area of Punjab. People here mostly follow the culture which quite resemble to that of Punjab.

While the district of Muzaffarabad has its own distinctive culture. The people are intelligent, hard working and are skillful. As it is the capital of AJK so it is quite established and people here are educated and sophisticated when you compare with the other areas of the Neelum valley.

Introducing Neelum Valley

Neelum is a beautiful valley containing about 370 small and large villages and near about two hundred thousand population. It starts from Chelhana and goes till Taobut 250 km long. It is named Neelum due to its river, curving like the snake with transparent sky colored water. Like any other population of the subcontinent it has the most heterogeneous population with variety of rituals, customs and traditions. The whole valley is full of beautiful and fascinating sceneries.

Neelum Valley is dipped in beauty Neelum valley about 252 km long and 3620 sq km curvature shaped with majestic pine, fir and deodar trees, lies north-south of Muzaffarabad. This ninety-mile long kingdom of vegetation is ripped apart by the indigo blue Neelum river which flows serpentinely down hills to merge itself into the river Jhelum at Domail. Domail, the confluence of two mighty rivers, presents highly fascinating scene of youthful embrace. This heart-warning spectacle is most soothing to the eye. Neelum Valley is situated to the North & North East of Muzaffarabad and running parallel to the Kaghan Valley.

It is separated from it by snow covered peaks, some over 4000 meters above sea level. Excellent scenic beauty, panoramic view, towering hills on both sides of the noisy Neelum river, lush green forests, enchanting streams, high altitude lakes and attractive surroundings make the valley a dream come true. The swaying lush green forests, snow capped mountains, streams singing songs of joy, and fast flowing river Neelum, all go together to make it naturalist’s wonderland. The area is also ideal for mountain tourism. A part of Nanga Parbat gigantic falls in this area which is dominated by "Sarwaali Peak" (6326 meters) the highest mountain in Azad Kashmir. Moreover like Kaghan Valley it is famous for fishing and angling activities in Neelum river and Jagran Nullah which are stocked with trout fish. Its sole tourist attraction is a seventeen (17) century fort built by the town’s founder, a chief of the Chak tribe named Muzaffar Khan, to ward off the Mughal armies of Emperor Akbar. Neelum valley is an attractive place for tourists due to its famous lush greenery, springs, streams, lakes and hilly and sloppy mountains.

There are two approaches to the valley. One from the Kaghan Valley which is linked with it at two points, the Noori Top (Pass) and the Ratti Gali and many minor Passes. From Dawarrian it takes two days for hiking or riding and night stay at Dharian at 12,000 feet. The second approach is from Muzaffarabad. It is a distance of 55 miles which is jeep able in fair weather. The Neelum meets the Jhelum river at Domali (meeting of the two) on the outskirts of Muzaffarabad city. From Paticka forest one reaches Nosari, 24 miles ahead of Muzaffarabad. Next come Chelhana (height 3,200 feet), Qazi Nag, Barian, Salkhala, Jura, Kundalshahi, Authmuqam on this road.

Some of its famous places like Shounter Pass, Chita Khata, Ratti Gali, Baboon, Noori Top, Sharda, Kel, Surgon and many more are mentioned by famous tourists like Mustansar Hussain Tararr, Ibn-e-Batota etc. Tararr even wrote a travelogue, Ratti Gali after visiting this place.

Traveling during May to October from the scorching heat of plains to the high land basin of Neelum Valley is indeed an escape from hell inferno to the cold breezes of paradise. The temperature remains in between 65°F to 90° F during the summer. The upper portion of the area normally receives first snow fall in the month of October and at some times even during September.

The valley, starting from Muzaffarabad, the capital of Azad Kashmir, is about 150 miles long. The first district of Neelum is Chelhana about 43 km from Muzaffarabad just after crossing the Nosari Bridge by the route of Neelum road. It lies on both sides of the river Neelum. The geographical features enhance the natural beauty of the Valley. Its elevation, a mere 2,000 feet at the start, gradually rises till it attains a respectable height of 8,000 feet. On both sides there are high mountains and peaks. Nearly all the forest wealth of Azad Kashmir is to be found in this part of the State.

Popular Attractions

The starting point of district Neelum about 43 km from Muzaffarabad just after crossing the Nosari bridge by the route of Neelum road. It is famous for its marble mines, from where marble is transported to Muzaffarabad and cities of Pakistan. Here is also a crossing point where people on both sides of LOC meet there relatives by crossing the bridge twice in a month. This meeting is possible after a long documentary process which is started with the consensus of both sides governments after the earth quack of 2005. On the opposite side of Chelhana is Tetwal under Indian occupation. Kerna the famous historical place is near Tetwal which is also told the capital city of ancient Kashmir by folks and even historians.

From here to Kundalshahi there are many small and large villages on the both sides of Neelum River, about 18 km forward is a link road Leswa bypass that leads to the top Chugali and many more beautiful mountains. Important stations in the way from Chelhana to Kundalshahi are Barian, Bandi, Leswa, Mirpura, Jura, Slampura and Chembher.

About 60 kilometer from Muzaffarabad a small village consisting 3000 population, first main market after entering District Neelum, Jura is a village with scattered population on both side of river. It is the beginning point for Leswa bypass road and for mountain villages like Kutha Chugali and Chunj Top. For scenic point of view Nakka, Baandi and Leswa are place worth to visit.

Kundalshahi

Kundalshahi is 74 km from Muzaffarabad and about 5 kilometers from Authmuqam, another midway station, and a small commercial centre. In Authmuqam and Kundalshahi almost all basic necessities are available in the local market. Being a commercial centre it is congested and over crowded. Jagran stream joins the Neelum river here which has a glass light clean water and a suitable habitation for trout fish. A small hydro electric power is installed on this stream in Kundalshahi which provide electricity to Kundalshahi and Authmuqam. From Kundalshahi a link road leads to Kutton, Jagran and other tops. At the end of Jagran hilly tops reflect amazing scenes and are worth to see. Kiyan Shareef is an adjacent village that has reputation as land of holy saints. And annually Urs ceremonies are celebrated which attracted a large number of devotees from Kashmir and from Pakistan. A Sherries is there for devotees.

Kutton and Jagran

The picturesque Kutton and Jagran are best to visit during April to October. Nestled in the lower part of Neelum valley, the picturesque "Jagran" is its inseparable part. Jagran Nullah (stream) is indispensable and plays pivotal role in the formation of its landscape beauty and charm which reveals the richness of the area. The area is 16 kilometers from Kundalshahi and is accessible by road. For the convenience of tourists, AJK tourism Department has constructed a rest house here. A mega hydro electric project is installed here that produce electricity to the state. A long a beautiful series of Himalayas mountain starts from here to Kaghan, Skardu and Chillas.

In Jagran places like Kutton, Thunian, Ghansee and Pattlian Sar are worth-seeing and inviting everyone to visit and enjoy. Jagran is ideal for mountaineers and takers too. Here the mountains are ranging from 4000 feet to 1400 feet above sea level. The ever green forests are stretched in the far flung lush green plateaus with abundance of wildlife.

On the side lane of the impressive tourists resort the ever flowing greenish and surf gushing waters of Jagran Nullah add to its peculiar character. Jagran Nullah, rushing downwards all along the tall grooves of trees is almost small river. Surrounded by scintillating beauty under the shades of the majestic snow-clad mountains the river is freezing cold. The snowmelt of these sky heights named "Jagran Nullah" is also know for rout fishing attracting angles all over the seasons.

Not more than 3 kilometers from Kundalshahi across the river Neelum one can enjoy the lovely place Salkhala. A Trout hatchery has been established by the Azad Kashmir Fisheries Department. A reasonable accommodation facility is available here.

Kutha Peran and Meengal

About 8 km forward from Kundalshahi just before entering Authmuqam a jeep able road lead to this series of small villages. Meengal and Kalkore about 1580 meter from sea level are the last villages of this series. A stream which is main source of water for cultivation for Authmuqam and for this village is flowing mid of the whole these village and falls in river Neelum at the place of Shahkot. Area is distinguishable for its rich scenic beauty, frequent waterfalls, typical life style, special cultivations and production of pottery.

Authmuqam is situation at 10 kilometers from Kundalshahi is the Sub Divisional Headquarter of the area. It contains all the civic services to a certain extent like hospital, post office, bank, a telephone exchange and a few small bazaars. If you need anything then you must buy it from here because this is the last stop where you can find reasonable commodities in quantity as well as in quality. Apart from the fact that this valley town is very unique in its beauty with respect to the other places we had yet visited, it is also significant as it marks the beginning of control line with Indian Held Kashmir in Neelum. It is another important station and well populated city in the valley. Having an altitude of about 1371 meters above sea level is located at a distance of 80 Kms from Muzaffarabad is connected by Neelum road. It is named Authmuqam because it is 8th station from Muzaffarabad to upper valley. Most people are government employees, rest are in different fields. A large number of government and private institution is working here including one high standard private and two government colleges. From here upwards emerges typical Kashmiri living pattern with houses built of wooden logs, most of them double storied. Authmuqam in its geographical structure is a cup like valley with green hills on the four sides. Hiking tracks for surrounding mountains are traced by peoples and tourists.

Neelum (Karen)

At a distance of about 9 Kms from Authmuqam, Neelum opposite to the Karen village (Indian occupied Kashmir) having an altitude of 1524 meters above sea level is very popular among tourists. A tourist rest souse run by AJK tourism department is situated on the bank of River. Due to its importance from tourism point of view, AJK tourism department is giving special attention to it. From Karen a link road leads to Neelum which is one of the most beautiful villages of Neelum Valley. A zoo and park is under construction, Neelum is also accessible via Karen By-pass starts from Authmuqam.

It is situated, about 25km from Authmuqam the district headquarter at attitude of about 1645 meters. Nagdar is famous for its scattered population on hilly grooves. It is famous for fine quality bean crop which is cultivated at a large land and supplies to the whole valley and out of the valley. Like Kutha Peran this whole series of village is situated on the both side of Nullah Nagdar and a lot of water mills are constructed on it for grinding Maize which is its major crop. Dawarrian at a distance of 13 Km from Neelum at an altitude of 1615 meters is surrounded by mountains full of conifer trees. Over here a mule-track up to Ratti Gali Pass (4140 meters), about 30 Kms toward west congest the Neelum and Kaghan Valleys. The pride of valley is the large fresh water lake nestled in the mountains. Vast plain is surrounded by the small yet beautiful lake and gushing water.

This place is situated about 32 kilometers forward from Authmuqam at an altitude of about 1560 meters. It is also a beautiful place of the both side of Neelum river. Potatoes are the major production of this area. Most people are dependent on their own cultivated sources and a large number is also associated with government and private jobs.

The most picturesque place in Neelum Valley is Sharda it is located at a distance of 136 kilometers from Muzaffarabad and 30 Km from Dawarrian. Sharda is one of the most beautiful places with its lush green planes, smooth flowing river which frozes in sever cold season and serves as passage for people of both sides of the river. This place from the point of view of tourists is so attractive and captivating that they get their money’s worth when they spend a few days here in their sojourn amidst nature. In Sharda one also finds ruins of an old place of learning. The presence of these ruins lends Sharda is a historical background providing special attraction for the people interested in archaeology and history. The most important site of Sharda is its haunted university remains which are said remains of a great university of the Asia in Buddhist era. This university was the center of knowledge for the people of China, East and Central Asia. It remained the attractive place for knowledge seeker for a long time that came by the route of Jammu instead of Muzaffarabad. But due to some unknown major accident this university lost its light and existence and vanished completely from the land and even from the history, alongside the university the remains of a fort.

This place is situated 90 km from Authmuqam and 19 kilometers journey from Sharda, which is at the height of 2097 meters above sea level. This is another picturesque place in the Neelum Valley. The Shounter Nullah joins river Neelum at this place and leads to Gilgit Agency over the Shounter (4420 meter above sea level). Buses run daily on this route in good weather. Kel is also a base camp of mountaineering activities up to Sarawaali Peak 6326 meters above sea level and "Sarawaali Glacier" which are said to be the highest peak and biggest glacier of Azad Kashmir. Rest Houses facilities are available. Form Kel a long track goes towards Nanga Parbat over the 4420 meters Shounter Gali.

This village is situated 38 kilometers from Kel. From Kel to forward jeep able road is available for Halmet, the valley above the Kel is also called Grace valley with its harsh and frozen weather in winter season, people have a typical life style. A tourist rest house had been constructed a Halmet to provide accommodation facilities to the visitors. Halmet has fascinating beautiful scenes yet unexplored. Janwai, Phulawai, Sardari and Halmet are the most beautiful places around here.

The last station of Neelum Valley is Taobut and end point of Pak beauty in Kashmir. It has a sever season and heavy snow in winter, and winter season continue about 6 months starting from October to April end. Often there are no signs of path due to land sliding and flooded water streams. In summer it is a worth place for tourist to visit.

Trekking in Neelum Valley

Neelum Valley provides a variety of treks at varying altitudes durations, ranging from a day to a week via from Dawarrian or Sharda to Ratti Gali with duration of 3 days, reaching a maximum altitude of 4140 meters and the trek can be extended to the Kaghan Valley by crossing the Ratti Gali Pass. Near the pass one can see an ideal natural lake "Ratti Gali" at an altitude of 3832 meters and other five little lakes around them. A challenging trek of a week’s duration is from Kel to Astor via Shounter Gali, reaching a maximum altitude of 4260 meters.

The area is well connected by road, more than half of it from Muzaffarabad is black topped, while remaining is all weather (un-metalled), which is being metalled. A regular bus service up to Kel is available. However you can drive in your own car up to Dawarrian from there onwards you have to switch over to Jeeps for your drive.

In professional life the long weekends are blessings and in Pakistan you get this honor quite a few times. At the start of every year the employees start calculating the long weekends they will get during that particular year and the same was done by us. But as compared to the last year this year the long weekends were very few. Fortunately in March there was an opportunity and since it was months since we all, colleagues and friends, went out for some much needed outing. Farhan, our tour guide, being an avid fan of travelling could not have asked for more to envisage a tour plan from 19th March to 23rd March, 2010. Like our last tour of Banjosa Lake and Tolipir hilltop in Azad Jammu Kashmir, this time around the plan was to explore the Neelum Valley in Azad Jammu Kashmir. He efficiently planned the tour itinerary – from Lahore to Muzaffarabad via Islamabad and Murree, Muzaffarabad to Athmuqam, Athmuqam to Sharda, Sharda to Kel and from Kel back to Keran and then back to Lahore. It was a four day exciting and fun plan and the ten eager enthusiasts (Farhan, Irfan, Kamran, Usman, Murtaqa, Imad, Saad, Atif, Ghazzanfar and Reshma) left from Lahore on a 2.7 litre Toyota High Roof towards the destination on Friday night. While Bilal Jawed could not make it as his father fell ill, Tariq Siddique skipped because his fiancé didn’t allow him to, Affan Iqbal ditched us to attend his friend’s wedding and Abdul Rafey missed out to enjoy his last birthday as bachelor with his future in-laws. No wonder they let pass the opportunity of a wonderful trip and it is also a painful reality that none of us noticed their absence. We set out on our adventurous journey and had hardly reached Sial Service Area on Motorway when Ghazzanfar disclosed that he no longer wanted to continue the tour, the news was shocking for us but then Ghazzanfar explained his misery of backache and requested us to drop him there as he wanted to go back and for our surprise he already made some adjustments on phone. Consequently, we dropped him there and continued our journey. Early next morning we stopped at Phagwari, near Murree to have a cup of tea – a break that was badly needed. Farhan, our navigator, was dead tired as he was up all night chatting with Gul Rose, our driver, so that he doesn’t sleep. And upon seeing a Charpai (hemp woven bedstead) he just rushed towards it snatched the woolen shawl from me, to protect him from the cool breeze, and laid down to take a power nap ala Prof. Viru Sahastre budhhe (ViruS). The tea was served with few pieces of plain cakes and we all gulped it but some of us didn’t eat the cakes in anticipation of the breakfast which we were assuming to enjoy at Muzaffarabad. After a brief stopover of 20 minutes, we restarted our journey. Finally, after a few hours of travel we got there and everyone expected a breakfast. But to our shock and utter disbelieve, Farhan revealed that as we already had breakfast at Phagwari we would have lunch at Athmuqam. Agonized by this disclosure, we looked at each other seeking solace as there was nothing we could do about it except wait to reach Athmuqam. At Domel, Muzaffarabd we saw the Neelum River streams joining river Jhelum. We continued our march towards Athmuqam, the district headquarters of Neelum Valley, with the estimated travel time of six hours. And when the breakfast has been denied it becomes rather more difficult to travel that long distance on an empty stomach. So Dr. Usman suggested playing cards in order to pass time and as it turned out to be really helpful. The road which led to Athmuqam was not in good shape rather there was no shape. Much of this was due to land sliding over the last few years especially after the October 2005 earthquake; and there was some development work in progress there, making it pretty obvious that the movement will be slow. But it never occurred to us that how slow it would be. Anyhow we remained patient. During our journey towards Athmuqam, we stopped few kilometers before Nosehri-Sadda at a beautiful waterfall and what a wonderful view it was. Although the sun was shining bright, the water was pretty cold. I drank the water to quench the thirst and then we had a photo session with the waterfall in the background. Farhan and Irfan experimented with their cameras and took some beautiful solo pictures of the waterfall which turned out to be too good. When we reassembled in the bus and complained about being hungry, we were given toffee size Cadbury chocolates supposedly to regain some energy. We were moving alongside the river Jhelum. We were about 5-7kms away from ‘Nosehri Sadda’ when the land sliding once again killed our steady advancement and this time round it was worse. And we were told by the Pakistan army team that it will roughly take about two hours to get the road clear again for traffic. It was a classic case of rubbing salt on wounds; we all were really hungry and anxious to reach Athmuqam to have our lunch. After much deliberation we decided to have lunch at Nosehri Sadda instead of Athmuqam in order to save time. We left three people with the van to safeguard our belongings and promised to bring food for them and the rest reached a small hotel (Dhaba) at Nosehri-Sadda. It is always a safe bet to eat either maize or any dish of chicken while on tour of Northern areas, so we did the same and ordered Chicken Karahi. By the time the lunch was served, quite surprisingly our other three musketeers along with the driver also reached the Dhaba. Thanks to the Pakistan Army for clearing the road so quickly. The lunch was served after sometime and we heartily ate the scrumptious Chicken Karahi. Quite interestingly Nosehri Sadda is actually the starting point of the Neelum Valley and there are two sectors in the Valley where the river becomes the LOC and one can see the villages and even the army of India across it. The first point is at Chiliana-Tithwal sector which comes after Pateka and the second one is Keran. Neelum Valley is distinct in its own respect as it forms a shape of an arc on the map of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The starting point in the arc is Nosehri-Sadda, while the farthest is Taobat. We started our journey once again but not before asking the local people how far Athmuqam was from there. We were happy to hear that it was just about two hours drive from Nosehri Sadda. The remaining drive was supposed to be less than an hour, but in order to be certain we pulled over to ask. To our dismay, a local confirmed to Gul Rose that another 2 hours remained in our journey. But this didn’t end here, and it was pretty obvious that the locals had made it a point to agonize and terrorize us by increasing our travel time, every time we asked anyone. We all were desperately waiting for someone to tell us that we have reached Athmuqam but no one came to our rescue and once again we were told that we needed to go another 35 kilometers to reach the much awaited destination. Eventually, after toiling for so long we reached there and such was the mood that no one really took notice of it but I did make the ‘hail Athmuqam’ gesture. At that point Farhan announced a change of plan. We will not be going to Sharda that day as it was another 2-3 hours from there instead we would stay at Keran which was at a distance of 5-7km from Athmuqam. We reached at the rest house in Keran after a 40 minute drive from Athmuqam. Azad Jammu Kashmir Tourism Department has constructed some very beautiful rest houses to promote tourism. The rest house was spacious and had all the necessary facilities, but the only thing it lacked was electricity, the supply of which was disrupted for the past 2-3 months due to the extreme weather conditions. But to their credit, they had made an effort to overcome the crisis by installing solar energy devices. As we were all very tired after the laborious but adventurous journey, so after freshening up and having a sumptuous meal everyone hit the bed. We were told that not long ago (about three years) the road to Keran was blocked because of the cross border firing. The Indian part of Kashmir was on the opposite side of the Neelum River and we could actually see the settlement on the Indian side from our Rest House. Imad was really surprised on this revelation, in fact he was quite excited to know he had slept and stayed under the shadow of Indian Territory (though occupied). The next morning, after breakfast we set on course for Sharda – a drive of 2-3 hours from Keran. On our way we saw some beautiful scenery where peaks were covered with snow and it reminded us of winter snowfall. We came across some scenic sights and many springs and waterfalls as the snow was melting on the top of the mountains. At one spot we saw a spectacular triple story waterfall which was quite amazingly originating from a single source. That is why Neelum Valley is also nick named as ‘Aabshara’. It all added to the splendor view before us. After two hours we reached Sharda guest house to meet the administration and to inform them about change of our plan – we had decided to skip our stay at Sharda. They understood, but we got the feeling that they wanted to host us and show their hospitality. So they voluntarily requested us to take them along to Kel – our next destination, we agreed. The administrator enlightened us about the Neelum Valley from the map and then took us to the Sharda Fort which used to be an old Budha University and was built by Kinshak-the-first, Prince of Nepal, from 24 AD to 27 AD. In the era of Kinshak-the- first, Sharda was the biggest educational institute in Central Asia. In addition to the regular education of Buddhism, the subjects of History, Geography and Philosophy were also being taught there. The university had its own Script – Sharda, which resembled with the Deo Nagri Script, and the current village Sharda was named after it. However, this building has now turned in to ruins due to negligence. Its importance of being an educational and knowledge hub looked more of a distant dream now. The majority of the people these days are unaware of the chronicles of Sharda University and now all that is left is the myths and stories told by the locals about this historical educational institute. We all trekked towards Sharda Fort but because of my tortoise speed I failed to match their pace and was left behind. Trekking on a mountain path is a challenge, and I’d been very careful with my walking, but I had a lapse in concentration. It happened when I was coming down from the trail where the stepping was a bit slippery. I carefully moved my right foot but as soon as I brought my left foot forward – I stumbled and lost my footing and rolled over about 4ft down on a rock bed. Humpty dumpty had a painful fall. I was really fortunate not to tumble any further and Thank God I just twisted my ankle, for it could have easily been much worse. In the immense pain I limped back with the help of my friends to the hotel where we had lunch. The pain was slowly aggravating and luckily there was a medical store in the vicinity from where I bought some balms and pain killer injection. The services of Dr. Usman came in handy as he gave me the pain killer shot for an instant relief. At first I was a bit incredulous but the professionalism Dr. Usman showed while injecting and even when emptying medicine in the syringe was a proof enough to convince me that he really is a doctor and the Dr. is not a mere prefix before his name. It may sound ironic but it’s a fact that only a day before the incident, upon seeing the crape bandage in the first aid repository he was carrying, I asked Farhan why this? He replied, “You don’t know its importance” and believe me I couldn’t have known it better. After the lunch, we kicked off yet again towards Kel along with our three companions from Sharda. The whole journey was a feast for eyes with exotic and picturesque scenery, snow covered mountains with a hint of greenery, some glaciers, springs and the Neelum River. It was pretty cold as well. The exquisite landscape really fascinated us and when Farhan played the old is gold songs collection of Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, it was matchless. The serene environment, the arresting and majestic view and the awesome lyrics of the songs magnified our captivating experience. There was one interesting site we saw while travelling, the road was carved through the mountain with the rock face hanging on the road. We all were astounded to see that and Gul Rose excitedly ask Farhan to take his photograph on the location, perhaps he wanted to proudly share this incredible view and his feat with his friends and family. The view which first left us speechless suddenly started to intimidate us as it looked like it could fall anytime. We simply captured this moment and settled in the van to move on. After travelling for about two hours we reached Kel. Our rest house was at best the centre piece of the bowl covered by snow; the rest house was actually surrounded by snow covered mountains which presented breathtaking view. It was cooler than we assumed and the doorstep of the rest house still had 4ft of snow left and the snow was only cleared from the entrance. The rest house once again was pretty good and luxurious. But the only downside was the unavailability of water but the work was in progress there and would be complete in another two months or so. We had already planned a movie night in Kel in the tour itinerary and also arranged the necessary equipment for that from Lahore. So after the dinner we all gathered in the spacious lounge and Farhan, Murtaqa, Atif and Irfan got busy in making the multimedia and the speakers operational. While the multimedia was ready in no time, it was the stereo sound speakers which refused to start. Almost everyone pitched in with their input, hit and trial method was used but all in vein. We cursed and let go off the stereo sound speakers and instead used the normal speakers to enjoy the movie night. After two hours or so the movie was over and we all bunched up to play cards except for Murtaqa. A few minutes later, when I looked around I saw Murtaqa using all his experience to set up the speakers and everyone was taken by surprise when he finally succeeded. The next morning we had a plan of trekking towards Arang Kel but due to weather conditions the plan was changed to Machal. Since I was injured I could not go with them but when they returned, they told me that it really was a wonderful experience and I missed it. They went to the Machal camp of Pakistan Army and were moved by their hospitality and could not stop from raving about the Pakoras and tea they had there. In the afternoon we left for Keran but not before we enjoyed the rain and the exquisite view of the mountains where the snow was falling instead of rain and it was a bit hazy as well. We dropped our guests at Sharda and reached Keran in anticipation of a planned Bonfire and Bar B.Q night. We were disappointed to hear that the staff of the rest house was unable make the necessary arrangements for it and ruined our plans. Nevertheless they made up for it and had cooked Biryani and Karahi. When the Karahi was served a new debate started on the table and it continued for about 5 minutes as to whether the food we were about to have a chicken Karahi or beef Karahi. The confusion was caused by the size of the pieces and the color as well; it had more of a beef Karahi look than anything else. But then few experts intervened and gave the verdict of it being a chicken Karahi – to the relief of a few. We were told that around that area chicken were normally over-aged and weighed about 4 kgs – one quarter of a goat. This is because the locals cannot purchase anything including meat or chicken during the winter months, due to harsh weather. So the animals in that area normally fatten up during winter. This was our last night at Keran as well as in Neelum Valley – the paradise on earth. In the morning we left for Lahore with some fond memories. The return journey was not as adventurous and exciting as when we started. Few things or activities we had planned on our tour were the bonfire and water-balloon fight but it never have materialized due to lesser time availability. Although it denied us ‘the icing on the cake’ but we could hardly complain since the cake was a treat in itself. It was 3 A.M. on Wednesday when we reached our home town Lahore after a 17 hour long journey. Indeed it was one memorable experience of my life and I am sure the others feel the same way. And I don’t think we would ever be able to forget the generosity and hospitality we received from the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
