Rethinking Christmas

Christmas lights

‘Rethinking Christmas’ is a chance to explore the Bible narrative with your young people through games and creative activities.

CHRISTMAS RUN-AROUND

Ideal for younger teenagers. This active ‘run-around’ quiz will test your group’s knowledge of the accounts in Matthew and Luke, providing a platform for further discussion or reflection.

Set up four zones in your room or hall (zone A, B, C and D.) Ask the group to gather in the middle of the hall. Explain that you will ask a question about the Christmas story which has four possible answers (A, B, C or D.)

Then on your signal (a whistle is good) the young people have 10 seconds to run to the zone which they think represents the correct answer. Once everyone is in a zone, the whistle blows again and they have 5 seconds (if they wish to change their mind) to change zones.

For example; With what words did the heavenly host of angels praise God?

A Joy to the world, the lord is come B O little town of Bethlehem C Hark the herald angels sing D Glory to God in the highest

Find out by downloading Rethinking Christmas (pdf) which contains this complete article including the ‘run-around’ quiz questions and an alternative (or additional) word search introducing the main characters and places in the nativity account.

The First Christmas

Christmas candles

Read the story in a modern version of the bible.

The texts are Luke 1:26-38 , Luke 2:1-20 , Matthew 1:18-25 and Matthew 2:1-18 .

If necessary, explain any unusual words in the story. Engage the young people with an interactive reading including narrator(s), angel(s), wise men, King Herod, King Herod's advisors and shepherds. Have Bibles available for the group activities or print the passages on a worksheet. Divide the young people into small groups of 4 to discuss the reactions of one of the main characters in the story. Give a character or character group i.e. wise men to each small group.

  • Mary - when first told she was to be Jesus' mother.
  • Joseph - when he learned his fiancé was pregnant.
  • Mary and Joseph - when told they would have to journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem for the census.
  • Shepherds - when they heard the message from the angels and went to see the baby.
  • Wise men-their compelling desire to visit the new king in spite of the long journey to get there.
  • Herod - when he discovered there was a new king whom he thought would challenge his own position.

Giving to others at Christmas

Candles

We look forward to what people will give us, but our giving to others can make a big difference to their Christmas and their understanding about the birth of Jesus.

This resource can be used as part of a youth night, youth club or Christmas presentation. It works well with 11-14's but please adapt according to the knowledge and age of your group.

GIVE A GIFT

Bring in some colour magazines or catalogues which contain lots of ideas for gift items. Divide your group into teams of 4 or 5 and give each a magazine, a large piece of paper, scissors, paste and pen. Tell them they need to make a collage of gifts they would send to the following people,

  • The queen, (or president, prime minister)
  • Your best friend
  • Your wonderful youth leader!

For older groups you can also add the extra factor of working to a budget £500 ($1000).

These Christmas resources can be used as part of a youth night, youth club or Christmas presentation.

FINISH THE PHRASE

The opening icebreaker begins the session by asking the group about their own experiences of Christmas and their expectations for this year. Write the ten unfinished phrases onto cards and place a number (1-10) on the other side. Explain to the group that the cards contain a phrase about Christmas which they need to finish i.e. the best present I ever had was... Ask a young person to select a number and finish the phrase. The same number can be selected more than once. Play until as many as want to have had a go, get involved yourself and encourage your helpers to participate.

Christmas unwrapped

christmas unwrapped

This Christmas resource can be used as part of a youth night, youth club or Christmas presentation. It works well with 11-14's but please adapt according to the knowledge and age of your group. Gifts are an important part of Christmas for everyone. We all like to receive gifts, but Christmas also provides an opportunity to give gifts to our family and friends. What kind of presents are you buying this year for your mum, dad, brother, sister or best friend? Discuss. Introduce the two icebreakers by explaining that we are going to practice wrapping a gift - but with a few differences!

Preparation: two large cardboard boxes, Christmas wrapping paper, two pairs of scissors, tape, two ribbons or bows and a whistle. Select two teams of six young people who stand at one side of the room. At the other side is placed a large cardboard box for each team with wrapping paper, scissors, tape, ribbon and a bow. Explain that at your signal the first person runs across the room to the box and begins to wrap it. After 15 secs a whistle will blow and they must run back to the other side of the room and tag the next team member who continues the wrapping process. End the relay when the box is wrapped or everyone has had a turn. Encourage everyone for their efforts and award a small gift to everyone for taking part! Come on its Christmas!

Christmas - what's in a name?

christmas star

This Christmas resource can be used as part of a youth night, youth club or Christmas presentation. It works well with 11-14's but please adapt according to the knowledge and age of your group.

How was your first name chosen? Usually it's by our parents, who choose names they like or names from within the family. Sometimes it might be from someone they admire, or a famous person or a celebrity. Ask the young people if they know why their first name was chosen. Was it after someone older in their family? Do they know what their first name means? Give time for responses.

Explain that many of our names today have been passed down through history and often originate in other languages. In Europe many names are derived from Latin or the Greek and Hebrew languages. Most originally described something about the person who was given the name i.e. Timothy (from the Greek) which means 'one who honours God.'

I'm sure you know all the answers! However, just in case, the correct answers are given at the end of the article! If you wish, choose your own words and add your own creative descriptions.

God's Christmas Plan

Anyone can recite this speech for a Christmas church service or celebration. It's an excellent segue into a Christmas program, such as a cantata. This speech discusses why Jesus was born and the plan God had for His son's life and every soul.

Welcome and Merry Christmas! It is wonderful seeing so many familiar and new faces tonight [insert morning, afternoon, or evening].

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son."

The birth of Jesus the Christ was prophesied in the Old Testament. It is the fulfillment of this prophecy that brings us together to celebrate Christmas. That wondrous birth of God's only begotten son! It was God's plan, as explained in John 3:16, part of what I just quoted. The love that God has for this world, for each of us, and for you is so great that he was willing to sacrifice his only son for you, for me, and for all people in this world.

Think about that for a moment.

Consider the enormity of that kind of love because we know that God loved his son. Just as you love your children, your parents love you, and you love your parents. For us, it's impossible to comprehend the greatness of God's love for us. His love was so deep that he willingly sacrificed his son for the souls of all humanity for the sake of your soul.

During Christmas, when we consider the birth of Christ, it isn't just a celebration of him being born as the son of God, although that within itself is an amazing event! But Christmas is also the celebration of the birth of redemption for all human souls.

Jesus was born for this reason and this reason alone. His birth means, as the rest of that Bible verse states, "that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Each of you was given the keys to heaven on the day Jesus was born. If you believe Jesus the Christ child was the only begotten son of God and the only reason he was born into this world was to take away your sins, then you are given the ultimate Christmas gift — life eternal.

So, on Christmas Day, we rejoice in the amazing birth of the son of God, and we also rejoice in our salvation, knowing that through his birth and sacrifice, we will join him and God in heaven for all eternity.

Why Jesus Was Born in a Stable

This original speech is perfect for children between the ages of six and ten. It explains the significance of Jesus being born in a lowly stable with a manger for his bed. After hearing this story, children may gain a better understanding of the meaning of Christmas and why Jesus was born into this world.

Use this speech for a Sunday school class, an introduction or part of a children's nativity play, or before the children's choir Christmas performance.

Merry Christmas! It's so wonderful to see each of you here today [tonight]. It's good for us to come together on this holiday to celebrate.

Christmas is a special time for us as Christians because we celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus. Since Jesus was the son of God, most of us would think he should have been born in a palace or castle because, after all, he was God's son. But he wasn't born in a stately castle, was he?

No. Jesus was born in a stable, a type of barn for farm animals, like sheep, cows, and chickens. Instead of having a brand-new beautiful crib to sleep in, Jesus had to sleep in a manger. Does anyone know what a manger is? (wait for children to respond.) A manger is like a slanted box with legs. It's where hay is placed for the animals to eat.

Imagine not being born in a hospital but a barn, and your crib is a dirty bin where animals are fed. It's difficult for us to understand why God would allow his only son, whom he loved very much, to be born in a barn with smelly farm animals. But the way Jesus was born is a very important part of the Christmas story. Do you know why? (allow children to answer)

God allowed his only son to be born in a barn because he wanted the world to know his son was a gift to everyone, not just the rich and powerful people of the world. God wanted the average person who worked in fields, who tended sheep, who worked in shops, and who prepared meals to know that Jesus was their savior as much as he was for a king or queen.

Jesus Christ was born for everyone because, in God's eyes, all of us are equals. No one is better than anyone else. And so, God wanted his son to be born in a place that was common to the average person.

That's why our Christmas church plays are about how Jesus was born. We retell the story of how Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem. Mary was about to give birth to Jesus. They needed a nice room with a bed, but all the rooms in the inn were rented. Instead, they had to stay in a stable, a barn for animals.

This is an unusual and humble beginning for the son of God, but it was important that Jesus be born as a common person so he could fulfill God's plan to save the world, to save each of us from sin.

When we sing Christmas hymns, we're singing about our joy and happiness that God loved us so much that he sent Jesus to save our souls and give us eternal life. We're also singing thanks to Jesus for the difficult burden he took upon himself to come into our world and ultimately give up his life for each of us — for each of you.

And there were three wise men who understood this. These kings traveled a very long distance to bring priceless gifts to Jesus because they knew he was the son of God. They wanted to pay their respects to Jesus and thank him for coming into the world to save them. And so, we give each other gifts in that tradition of gratitude.

While these kings were kneeling before Jesus and bestowing him with priceless gifts, shepherds in the fields saw an angel in the night sky singing and announcing the birth of the Christ child. The shepherds hurried to the stable to also pay their respects and give thanks. And, soon, people were coming from all over to see Jesus.

This is the scene we call the nativity. It's a snapshot of Jesus's birth that shepherds, villagers, and kings all kneeled before him and sang songs of thanksgiving. So, let us give thanks as we sing our Christmas hymns and keep Christmas in our hearts every day.

Christmas Hope

Christmas is a message of hope to the world and the great sacrifice that God and His son Jesus made for every soul. You can convey that message with this speech at any Christmas service. It could be the opening for an afternoon or evening cantata, a candlelight Christmas service , or the opening speech for a Christmas church play .

Merry Christmas! Welcome to our Christmas (insert service, play, cantata, etc.)

Christmas is one of the most sacred holidays of the church. Like other church holidays, it's a time when we come together to celebrate and rejoice in our love for God and Jesus. Unlike other church holidays, Christmas marks the beginning of hope for the world.

Now, there are all kinds of hopes, such as "I hope I win the lottery tonight" or "I hope Aunt Mae doesn't make her famous chocolate cake for the family Christmas dinner." Everyone who knows Aunt Mae is probably hoping the same thing. But those examples aren't really about hope. Are they? They're more like wishing. Not real hope.

Hope is defined as a positive or optimistic expectation. And this expectation is often about a circumstance or an event that usually has some kind of impact on your life. That definition fits nicely with the birth of Jesus.

Jesus is the hope for the world. That hope is that we continue to exist after death. Through Christ, God has given us hope of an eternal life. Without Jesus's birth, that hope simply would not exist for us Christians today.

Imagine what the world would be like without hope. But today, we have great hope! This is the day Jesus was born. It's the day God gave his only begotten son, Jesus, the Christ, to wash away your sins.

Jesus's birth signifies our journey back to God, our creator. Jesus restores hope to the world. He paved the way for us. When we believe in Christ, we accept that message of hope proclaimed on Christmas morning that the Christ child was born.

This birth of hope makes Christmas so much more than hymns, Christmas trees, presents, and turkey dinners. It is this sacrifice by God and then his son, Jesus, that delivered hope to the world. The hope of eternal life for all who believe.

So, this Christmas, let's make a joyful noise unto the Lord! Let us give to others in the same spirit of the Christ child. Let us love one another. And most importantly, let us give thanks for the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and the Christmas hope he gifted to us.

Easy Christmas Narrations For Your Small Church

Easy Christmas Narrations For Your Small Church

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission from purchased products at no additional cost to you. See my full disclosure here .

Do you want to put on a Christmas program for the holiday season, but struggle to find a program that fits your congregation size, your style, your talent pool, and your schedule? Most productions out there require several rehearsals and specific set designs. Quite frankly, many of us just don’t have the volunteer power to do this.

Narratives are easy. They give your small church a way to highlight children and youth during Christmastime without lots of practices, expensive costumes, or complicated stage designs. As long as you have children, youth, or adults who are willing to read, you can do this.

Kendra Shares Her Gift For Creative Writing

Kendra Lynn, understands what this is all about. Kendra was brought up in a small church, where her Dad was a church planter . She learned early in her life how small churches need to be creative, especially when it comes to the holidays.

Kendra discovered she loved to write first-person narratives, especially about Christmas. The story of the birth of Christ impacted her at a young age, and she loved to share it with others. Kendra’s family loved her writings, and soon, they started to use them as the narrative for their Christmas cards, and the rest, shall we say, is history. Kendra has been writing and sharing the love of Christ ever since!

Kendra and her husband are church planters in Michigan, and she continues to use that gift for writing in their small church. In this blog post and free PDF, Kendra shares three small church Christmas narratives.

Shine Jesus In Your Christmas Programs

These two programs use multiple readers . They both brightly shine the light of Christmas on Jesus and share the true message of the gospel. Kendra’s small church always makes sure their focus looks outward at Christmas , and her short programs certainly accomplish that goal.

Narratives Work Great With Mixed Ages

These narration programs are adaptable to your small church needs. You can mix young people with teens and older adults as readers. This is a great way to promote intergenerational ministry and a good example to your community about how small church family life works.

These Christmas narrations can work well with a simple podium and readers coming up to the microphone. But you can also easily build on that if you want to add other dimensions of creativity. There are suggestions throughout the programs, but we challenge you to put a creative committee together and see what they might come up with!

Staging Options For Your Small Church Narrative

There are lots of possibilities with these Christmas narrations on how to ‘stage’ them.

  • Have your readers dressed in Biblical costumes and come to the front stage to read.
  • Ask readers to stand at a podium to the side of the stage on the floor while you project a slide on the screen. The slides can be scripture slides or images downloaded.
  • Stand readers off stage with a microphone. Then set up a curtain screen to do silhouette characters behind the curtain, with light shining from the back.

**Songs can be sung by the Worship Team alone, performed by a soloist as a special number, or sung as a congregational song. It’s always a great idea to show lyrics when the congregation is singing, this helps those who aren’t very familiar with a song.

Try a New Narrative This Christmas!

Think about the different possibilities this Christmas.

Christmas narrations can work for small churches.

  • No expensive props needed
  • Can work with few numbers
  • Perfect for all ages
  • Easily uses mixed ages
  • Don’t require lots of practices

Five Tips To Give Reader Success

  • Give your reader plenty of time to read through their part ahead of time. Don’t just throw it at them and expect them to perform their part without reading it first.
  • For children, when you give them their part to read, have them read it to you. This allows you the opportunity to help them say words correctly or define words they don’t know.
  • Sometimes it helps to give the reader a little character insight based on background information. For example, for a reader whose part includes seeing an angel, before they read their part, ask about how they might feel if a real angel appeared to them right now and started talking with them.
  • Use BIG print when printing out reading parts. Readers deal with lots of things during a performance, such as lights, knowing where to stand, anxiety, seeing/ not seeing the audience, and even a warmer temperature standing in the spotlight. Set them up for success by giving them parts that are typed with larger print on their papers. Then, it will be one less challenge they have to navigate.
  • If children want someone to be with them, by all means, let it be. Encourage them to bring a buddy, parent, or teacher to stand with them and be willing to jump in and help if necessary.

So, however your small church decides to share the message of Christ this year, we pray you might be able to use some of the resources made available here. Please let us know if you do, post about it in our Facebook community , and don’t forget the pictures!

Need a Last-Minute Christmas Presentation? Try This Original, Two-Person Skit

  • December 12, 2013

Karl Vaters

Christmas is a time for traditions. But not all traditions work for all churches.

The church I pastor seldom does Christmas plays. And when we do, they’re anything but traditional.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But we live within driving distance of Disneyland, Hollywood, major music venues and massive megachurches. I can literally hear the fireworks from some of the world’s biggest, most famous, multi-million-dollar Christmas spectacles from my backyard.

Teenagers in bathrobes singing Silent Night can’t compete with that. So we don’t try.

Instead, we stick with simple get-togethers . And sometimes we’ll come up with an idea no one else has tried and give it a shot.

One of the most successful skits we’ve ever done is one I wrote last year.

I know this is late in the season, but if there’s one thing I know about Small Churches it’s that a lot of what we do happens in that last-minute scramble.  If your church is looking for an off-beat way to re-tell the Christmas story, here’s an idea. It’ll help people see  the birth of Jesus as told in the Gospels in a way they’ve never seen it before – while honoring the biblical narrative.

The premise of the skit is that there’s an entire epic’s worth of wonder, joy and excitement packed into  the very few verses that make up the biblical Christmas story .

All you need is two actors willing to go a little over-the-top and two non-speaking volunteers. The only props are a laptop (or a notepad) and a phone. The only staging needed is a desk and two chairs.

Here’s the entire script of the play. It lasts about 20-25 minutes.

It’s also available to print as a Word document or in PDF version .

 The One-Page Christmas Epic

There are two speaking roles in this play and two non-speaking roles that happen very quickly at the end. The speaking roles are a movie producer (MP) and a screenwriter (SW).

The speaking roles are written according to the genders of the original actors, but can be played by either gender.

A movie producer is pacing in his office, talking frantically on a cell phone.

Movie Producer: That’s right, send me a screenwriter! I have an idea for the greatest movie epic of all time! What…? She’s on her way? Then why isn’t she—

A woman comes in, carrying a laptop computer.

MP: Never mind. Here she is. (He ends his phone call, then looks at the phone and says sarcastically) Lots of help you were.

Screenwriter: Hello, sir (reaching out her hand to shake) It’s an honor. I’m —

MP: (Cutting the woman off) Sit down and take notes. (He motions to a chair on the other side of the desk from his chair.) I’m on no sleep, 10 cups of coffee, 2 cans of Redbull and a bag of Twizzlers for lunch, and I’ve come up with the greatest movie idea of all time. All time!

The woman sits down and opens her laptop on the desk. Throughout the conversation, she will rotate back-and-forth between typing and talking.

MP: There’s a man and a woman – and a baby – a special baby.

SW: A special baby? You mean, like a seed-of-the-devil baby?

MP: No, the opposite.

MP: He’s special, but in a good way. No, a great way!

SW: OK, that could be an interesting twist to work with. A family movie, maybe with a love story between the baby’s parents.

MP: Oh yeah… the baby’s parents. (Suddenly) Ooh! The baby’s parents-to-be have to travel to the father’s hometown, but when they get there, there’s some kind of crisis and all the hotels are closed, so they end up in a warehouse, a shipping container…

SW: Nice! Like an art-house, bohemian kind of feel. Set design will love that.

MP: Then there’s a crisis… let’s see…

SW: I know! She goes into labor at the worst possible time.

MP: Yeah. I love it! They can’t find a doctor, so they need some kind of makeshift crib, yada yada yada… Oh! Then some blue collar guys in town come by to help.

SW: Blue collar…

MP: Working stiffs. You know, welders, dock workers… I got it! Farmers!

SW: Farmers? Coming to a warehouse in the middle of a city?

SW: Uh… why?

MP: (In a grandiose manner) Because only the common man knows that this baby is special!

SW: OK… I think I get where you’re going now. Something the regular working person can relate to. And the farmers come to help out, somehow?

MP: Help out, hang out, I don’t know. Something like that. You’re the writer. You figure it out. (Excitedly) Oh, I’ve got it! The birth scene ends with a long, pullout camera shot of the father, mother, baby and the visitors in the warehouse, for an iconic final shot.

SW: Nice. That could work. So what does the baby do that’s so special?

MP: Nothing.

SW: Nothing?

MP: Nothing… (with a big smile) yet.

SW: Oooh, I see a sequel coming!

MP: Can you do it?

SW: Sure, it’s sparse, but I can make something of it. It’s a great premise. A feel-good story. It sets up a sequel. I can make it into a full-length movie or book – maybe both.

MP: Actually, let’s add a little more to punch it up.

SW: OK. But I don’t need anything else. I’ve started with a lot less.

MP: I want the birth itself to be special.

SW: Like an Alien/Fringe thing where the kid comes exploding out of—

MP: No (thinking…) not the birth… the conception.

SW: Uh huh… You want the conception to be special? Like Boom-Chicka-Wow-Wow? That’s an entirely different movie, sir. That could cause problems with the ratings board.

MP: Boom-Chicka-Wow-Wow? What’s wrong with you? (With a nod to the audience) There are kids here.

SW: Kids? Where? We’re in your… office …remember?

MP: There will be children watching this movie. I want this to be PG, PG13 at the most. So no Boom-Chicka-Wow-Wow. The opposite of that.

SW: What kind of special conception is the opposite of… that?

MP: You’re the writer. You figure it out. (Suddenly, so it surprises the screenwriter) Taxes! I hate taxes! (Looking at the screenwriter, who’s just staring at him, shocked) Why aren’t your writing this down?

SW: Uh, well… So, it’s political?

MP: (Suddenly, again) Animals! I love animals!

SW: Animals? You mean, like a dog or a cat? I know… a talking pet who rescues the baby.

MP: A talking animal? Please. Be realistic here.

SW: Yeah right. That would be the crazy part…

MP: No… just…you know…some place where there’d be livestock around… I know! We need exotic visitors from another land! With fancy gifts!

SW: So it’s a huge costume drama now? You know this budget will be through the roof, right?

MP: A crazy king! And he does something so evil, people will gasp in horror.

SW: Now it’s a horror movie? I don’t know sir…

MP: An escape! To a foreign country! Now that’s a huge epic, right?

SW: “Epic” isn’t the word I’d use (under her breath) more like schizophrenic.

MP: What was that?

SW: Nothing sir. But you’re talking Hunger Games size here. 3-4 books and movies. If I can get all of this to make sense in the same story. I don’t know…

MP: A star !

SW: Yes! Now you’re making sense. If we could get a big star to sign on, we might be able to get this greenlighted… I’m thinking Russell Crowe, Jennifer Lawrence…

MP: No. Not that kind of star. I mean a star in the sky. Like a comet!

SW: Hurtling towards earth to destroy it? Like a disaster movie?

MP: The opposite of that.

SW: What’s the opposite of th—?

MP: Ooh! And angels! Angels coming and going all over the place! And a musical number!

SW: You mean, like Broadway?

MP: Bigger!

SW: (Sarcastically, to herself) Maybe I’ll just have the angels do the big musical number.

MP: That’s perfect! (His eyes get big, like the greatest idea of all time has hit him, then he speaks softly and deliberately) Listen to this… It. Splits. History. In. Half.

SW: (Looks at him like he’s crazy, then down at her screen like she’s given up) So you want a feel-good, family, love story, arthouse, political, costume drama, horror, escape, disaster-that’s-not-a-disaster, supernatural, musical, historical epic (searching through the laptop screen) …with animals and angels… (sarcastically) Anything else?

MP: (Calmly) Peace.

SW: (Rolling her eyes) Uh, yeah. Peace, man.

MP: (Seriously) No. The story. It brings peace to the whole world.

SW: Of course it does.

MP: What would it take to do all that?

SW: (Sarcastically) You mean, aside from like, a billion dollar budget?

MP: (Not catching the sarcasm) Yeah. Aside from that.

SW: OK… This is Lord of the Rings territory now. We’re talking 3-4 huge books, 5-7 movies, maybe a theme park… we’re practically creating a new religion here.

MP: Oh no! We’re not doing that. The last thing the world needs is a new religion.

SW: OK… it’s nice to know you draw the line somewhere. But I gotta tell you, I don’t see how any of it will make sense in the same story…

MP: Well, work on it and get back to me in a week.

The screenwriter leaves the stage.

SCENE 2: One Week Later

The Movie Producer is in his office, talking on his phone again. He is now behaving rationally.

MP: Thanks Doc. I’m feeling a lot better now. You’ve helped me so much this past week. This is my first day back in the office since my…episode. I’m waiting on a screenwriter to come in. I think I scared her a little last week and I need to apologize. Then I’ll take that overdue vacation, like you recommended.

The screenwriter enters holding a sheet of paper. She’s excited, but not in a crazy way.

MP: (Into the phone) Oh, here she is. Gotta go. Thanks Doc. (He ends the call and turns his attention to the screenwriter.) Hello, miss… You know I never did get your name (as he reaches out to shake her hand)

SW: (So excited she doesn’t notice his outstretched hand) Never mind that. Here! (She hands him the piece of paper.)

MP: Uh, what’s this?

SW: It’s our screenplay! And I have to say, I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever written!

MP: (Looking at the page, turning it over to see it has writing on both sides) You mean this… this… single piece of paper is a screenplay?

SW: Yep! And it’s all there!

MP: What’s all here?

SW: Everything we talked about! (She gets giddy as she says this) It’s a feel-good, family, love story, arthouse, political, costume drama, horror, escape, disaster-that’s-not-a-disaster, supernatural, musical, historical epic (pauses for a breath) with animals and angels!

MP: Uh huh… (Pulls out his phone, turns his back to her and speaks quietly into it) Security, I have a code red. (He turns back to her) Listen, last week when I had you in here, I wasn’t exactly myself. And I may have said some things that were a little bit… I don’t know…

MP: Well, crazy is a little strong..

SW: Oh, no sir. You were crazy. Then I started thinking about it and, I don’t know… something just came over me and I started writing it. Please sir, I know this sounds…

SW: Fair enough. But just give it a read, please?

Two security guards show up. The producer points them to the screenwriter.

MP: (Condescendingly) Sure… sure I’ll read it. But for now I have a couple friends here who are going to take you to see another friend of mine, OK?

The security guards take her by each arm and start to lead her out.

SW: Wait a minute! What’s—? Oh, I get it. No sir, you don’t understand! (As she’s almost out the door) Just read it, sir! Please! Read it! (She’s gone off stage)

MP: (Looks at the page as if to crumple it up, then pauses) I guess it couldn’t hurt.

What’s written on the page is the Christmas story blended from Matthew and Luke, plus a few verses from John 1. He starts to read it casually, then grows more interested and touched by the story as he reads it, pausing to smile as he recognizes each of the “crazy” parts they talked about.

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”—which means, “God with us.” When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. And he gave him the name Jesus. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.” When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: “’But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'” Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.” When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.” After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.” So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God — children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Close that out with a 10 minute message to personalize the story and you’ve got a Sunday service or Christmas Eve to remember.

If you like it, print it and use it. But if you do use it, let me know. I’d love to hear how it goes.

Anchoring Script: Christmas

As the magical season of Christmas approaches, planning and organizing festive events becomes an integral part of spreading joy and creating memorable experiences. Whether you are hosting a Christmas party, a community gathering, or a school function, an anchoring script serves as the backbone of the event, guiding the flow and engaging the audience. This article offers a comprehensive guide on how to write an anchoring script for Christmas celebrations. By incorporating key elements such as warmth, enthusiasm, creativity, and a touch of nostalgia, you can craft a captivating script that captures the spirit of Christmas and leaves a lasting impression on the attendees.

Table of Contents

Setting the Tone

To set the festive tone, begin with a warm welcome, expressing excitement and gratitude for everyone’s presence. Acknowledge the significance of Christmas and the joyous atmosphere it brings. Share personal anecdotes or experiences related to Christmas, fostering a sense of relatability and connection with the audience. Encourage audience participation through interactive elements like asking questions or sharing their own holiday memories. Highlight the overarching theme or purpose of the event, whether it is centered around giving, family, community, or the spirit of Christmas. Emphasize the importance of coming together and celebrating the values that Christmas represents.

Introducing Performances and Activities

Introduce musical acts, choirs, or bands with a brief background and their significance to the event. Share interesting facts or trivia related to the songs being performed, creating anticipation and engagement. Transition smoothly between performances, acknowledging the performers’ efforts and inviting applause from the audience. For dance or drama presentations, provide a brief overview of the performance, including the storyline or theme. Spotlight the participants, their dedication, and the efforts put into the presentation. Convey enthusiasm and admiration for the performers, encouraging the audience to show their appreciation.

Incorporate fun and engaging activities like Christmas-themed quizzes, charades, or treasure hunts. Explain the rules and objectives clearly, ensuring that the audience understands how to participate. Maintain a lively atmosphere by incorporating humor, encouraging friendly competition, and offering small prizes or rewards. Announce the arrival of any special guests, such as Santa Claus, local dignitaries, or surprise performers. Build excitement and anticipation by highlighting their significance and the surprises they bring. Facilitate interactions with the guests, such as inviting children to meet Santa Claus or inviting a guest speaker to share a Christmas message.

Transitioning and Closing

Maintain a seamless flow between different segments of the event. Use transition phrases or engaging anecdotes to bridge the gap between activities. Keep the energy and excitement consistent throughout the event, ensuring a smooth and engaging experience for the audience. Incorporate brief inspirational messages or quotes related to the spirit of Christmas. Encourage reflection, gratitude, and acts of kindness during the holiday season. Remind the audience of the importance of spreading love and joy in their communities.

Express appreciation for the performers, organizers, volunteers, and any other individuals who contributed to the event’s success. Highlight their dedication and hard work, emphasizing the collaborative effort in creating a memorable celebration. Extend gratitude to the audience for their active participation and for being a part of the special occasion. End the script with a heartfelt closing message, summarizing the essence of the event and the significance of Christmas. Wish the audience a joyous and blessed holiday season, inspiring them to carry the spirit of Christmas in their hearts throughout the year.

FREE Downloadable Powerpoint / Keynote presentations…

Tips for preachers using powerpoint or apple keynote [click the + to open], tips for preachers using powerpoint or keynote…, 1. use more slides (powerpoints are  not  like overhead transparencies).

Back in the days when we used overhead transparencies, we tried to cram as much text onto the slide as possible (since each slide cost between 50c to $1). Powerpoint slides are much cheaper! Therefore consider putting just one verse of Scripture per slide, not 27. Use one Powerpoint slide to emphasize one point of the presentation. Consider using multiple slides to give the appearance of animating your presentation.

2. Avoid WordART

Powerpoint comes with a graphics/text editor called “WordART”. It’s ugly. Don’t use it. Instead, use a dedicated graphics program like Photoshop to create your text as a jpg file and import into your Powerpoint presentation.

3. Simple Backgrounds

Powerpoint slide backgrounds should be subtle and consistent. Don’t use a different background for each slide. This is visually confusing. Backgrounds are supposed to be backgrounds!

4. Use Pictures and Photos

Text-only is harsh. Pictures and photos soften a presentation and generally make it warmer. Really good Powerpointers can communicate their message cleverly by using pictures or photos as 80% of their presentation. -Andrew Corbett

A Comprehensive Guide on Short Presentations

Hrideep barot.

  • Body Language & Delivery , Presentation , Public Speaking , Speech Writing , Workplace Communication

short presentations are presentation that have limited number of slides ranging from 12-20 and time duration ranging from 2-15 minutes

A short presentation is a presentation that conveys a point or a topic in brief within the span of 5 to 12 mins. It generally sticks to the main idea with a speed of 120-160 words per minute. Short presentations approximately have 12-20 slides depending on the depth of the topic and also differ in length from person to person.

Imagine a situation where you missed your presentation day due to some reasons and now your teacher/ senior is furious and is threatening you that they will give a remark that could be damaging to your student/work résumé. But somehow you convince them to give you a second chance. However, the condition is that the presentation that you had prepared for should be now presented in just 2-5 minutes or else give up. What to do? And how to do it?

A short presentation. What is that? So, when you must research a particular concept or topic in detail but explain or present it in brief that is 5 to 10 mins is known as a short presentation. One gives a short presentation with the thought in mind that their audience’s attention span is small. Short presentations are even used in daily life while convincing someone, explaining a thought, pitching an idea, etc. in a well-presented manner. For instance, to convince your parents to let you go on a trip with your friends you make a short presentation on ‘XX reasons why I should be allowed to go on a trip with my friends’ ‘or why should you be allowed to adopt a pet’.

Furthermore, recent research showed that the 12 slide presentations pitches outclassed their longer counterparts and were also stated as more effective.

Short Presentation Terms

Additionally, there are some terms used for short presentations. One of the terms is known as lightning talk; this is a noticeably short presentation given in forums or conferences that lasts for only a few minutes. They only focus on certain important key points and discuss as many ideas as possible in a fleeting time span.

Furthermore, other types of short presentations include Ignite and Pecha Kucha. Having the Japanese meaning of chit chat, Pecha Kucha is adopted from the phrase “talk less show more”. Here the presenter talks for exactly 6 minutes and 40 seconds with 20 slides lasting 20 seconds (set to change periodically). Pecha Kucha nights involve people sharing personal presentations about their work or any specific topic with 8 to 14 presentations per event.

Likewise, ignite talks is a series of events (somewhat like ted talks) where the presenter is given 5 minutes to present 20 slides with each taking 15 seconds and then automatically advancing. It was presumably inspired from Pecha Kucha and started in Seatle before reaching to more than 350 countries.

To know more about the several types and styles of presentation, read our article – The 6 Types Of Presentation (And Why You Need Them)

Creation, Practice and Presentation

How do you execute a successful short presentation? In order to do that you need to be proficient with the ‘CPP’ of the presentation that is creation, practice/preparation, and presentation. If you become familiar with these steps it could be easier for you to make a compelling presentation.

Creation

Creating a presentation is the first and the most crucial step to a good presentation. Knowing what to add and how much to add can have a profound impact during the demonstration.

1. Correct Topic

Firstly, choosing the correct topic if given a choice is a major decision. Selecting a topic that is too complex and lengthy might confuse you as well as your audience and create a bad impression. Easier topics might result in less information overload and more information grasping or perceiving.

2. Information Filter

Subsequently, filter out the points that you feel are the most important to be added after completing your research. Taking up points with extra information could take up your presentation time.

3. Target audience Knowledge

Tertiarily, know your target audience. Having the time constraints, you do not want to bore the audience with the information that they already know or the information that they do not want to know or is useless to them. Thus, do you research well and only add the points that are relevant to your audience.

4. Presentation Quantity and Quality

Try to keep the average number of slides between 12-20 depending on the time that you have in your hand. Moreover, use a good template, even if the presentation is short, it should appear appealing to the audience.

5.Timed Intervals

Keep your transitions interval coupled with the time you want to take on a particular slide; that is use auto transition during your slideshow so that you are aware of your time limit.

6. Effective Opening

Make your opening one that steals the attention of the audience. Since you have less time to present make sure the audience focuses from the start, if they would not be able to do this you would anyways have to end presentation in the next few minutes (as you less time) with no one getting what you just presented or getting your idea. Some of the good opening remarks are included in our article – 10 Of The Best Things To Say In Opening Remarks

7. Crammed vs Clean

Lastly, avoid cramming in much information on a slide, try to keep your slide more visual and cleaner. Too much information on a slide could look unappealing and the audience could also not be able to complete reading before the slide transitions.

Practice/Preparation

short presentations give you more time for practice/ preparation and thorough practice makes you more confident on stage.

The second step is preparation or practice. Now as the slides are less and the creation part is completed quickly one gets a lot of time to practice.

A) Time Yourself

Start off with timing your presentation, make sure you finish off with your presentation on the allotted time limit, 10 secs here and there is fine but try to refrain from taking more time than that. Specifically, practice in slideshow mode so that you can synchronize your speaking time with the transitioning of the slides.

B) Rehearse with Coach Feature

If nobody is around to practice with, you could use rehearse with Coach feature (only available if you have made your presentation on PowerPoint) to correctly time and practice your presentation. It analyses your pace, use of filler words (like uh, uhm, etc.), your pitch, if you are simply just reading from the slide, culturally sensitive terms etc.

To learn to use the rehearse with coach feature, watch the video below:

C) Pace perfecting

Practicing your pace is essential. You ought to pick up a perfect pace, do not speak too fast just because you are timed (though sometimes you might speak fast unconsciously so practice thoroughly), choose a pace where the audience can contemplate what you are saying. Do not speak so slowly that you surpass your cutoff time. Try to avoid fillers, this can decrease your time and give you more speaking time. However, time your speech such that you finish before the time limit as sometimes you unconsciously also might use the fillers and end up pausing frequently.

D) Understand and Memorize

Likewise, try to memorize (although do not mug it up!) your speech as much as possible resist simply reading from a paper or slides, it looks unprofessional.

Presentation

The final and the most unnerving step is the presentation. This is the evaluation day where all your effort will be examined and judged. First of all, make sure that you calm yourself before the presentation. If you start panicking or become nervous you might mess up the presentation and as it is a short presentation, you might not even have time to cover up.

Use different techniques to be calm like meditation, talking to a close one, bioenergetics etc., to learn about being less nervous watch our video –

Remember the practice that you have done, remember all the important points (like your pace should not be too fast), revise your content and make sure you look confident and interactive. Lastly, do not be extremely nervous, remember you just have to present for 5-10 mins but make that time count and impress the audience.

Importance of Short Presentations

So, short presentations are omnipresent and used in almost every field. Therefore, they become an important soft skill to acquire. Some reasons highlighting the importance of short presentations comprise of:

Time constraint. In this technological era people are available 24*7 and can be contacted anytime. Hence, with increased online hours to keep themselves updated with the world and work hours; people have very less time to spare to attend long presentations of you pitching in your ideas. Therefore, short presentations work as saviors here in getting your idea to the audience without taking much of their time.

Moreover, it helps you identify and focus on your key message. Short presentations improve your identification and inclusion of important points. It enhances your skill to explain your skill to explain your point in short even in daily life, preventing you from losing the interest of others and from becoming that boring person in the room that explains way too much. As a bonus it also increases the chance of your senior choosing you to interact with the client.

Why Short Presentations  are Better

What makes short presentations so widely used and convenient? There are many benefits of short presentations.

1. Time saving

As mentioned above, short presentations save the audience as well as the presenter a lot of time, and besides, they also cover loads of topics in truly little time, giving each person a chance to put forth their ideas and thoughts. It also saves time on the creation part of the presenter thus giving them more time to practice.

2. Less attention time

This is a desirable alternative for those who hate long stage time or presenting in front of others (either due to anxiety, stage fear or any other reasons). This could furthermore be a stepping stone for those who want to get rid of their fears of prolonged hours on stage but want to systematically desensitize themselves to it and not in one go.

3. End moment revision

Short presentations are helpful in explaining everything in a gist and hence they are great resources for end moment revision before an exam when one has less time to study in detail. Teachers can use it during revision lectures or students can use them as reference notes as they are self-explanatory.

4. Useful for short attention spans

Nowadays people have a short attention span and they are less tolerant towards long presentations. They are not interested in the long thesis of a topic, they need what, why and how it will affect or benefit them. Therefore, short presentations keep them focused on what you are saying and make them understand your idea more effectively.

5. More time to practice

With short presentations after completing the creation part one gets a lot of time to practice and do some extra research to get well acquainted with the topic that they are presenting on. This further helps them during the questions and answers sessions to solve the audience’s doubt clearly.

6. Easier evaluation

Short presentations are easier for the professors or the authorities to evaluate. If they assign short presentations to their students or employees, authorities can get a clear understanding of their presentation and research skills in a shorter time. The short length makes evaluating skills 40-50 people simpler and less tiring.

7. Additional benefits

Added advantages of short presentations include getting more time for the interactive or QandA sessions with the audience. Consequently, you also have the time to know the opinions, thoughts, and experience of the audience; along with their reviews.

Challenges of a short presentation

Short presentations are many times thought of as easier because of their limited number of slides and the short duration. However it comes with its own challenges and drawbacks.

Concise Points

The most important skill to make a short presentation is the ability to keep your points concise but understandable. The audience should be able to get the idea even in 4 words. Lack of this skill could make it quite difficult for you to end your presentation in a given time limit.

Tight Time Constraints

Besides, as you have time constraints, it gets difficult to add all the information that you find important. You would need to filter out the essential information from the additional ones and further select the information that you think of as the most important. Keep the rest as backup slides in case you need it (for a proper guide on backup slides check out our article – Backup Slides: The Six Situations Saviors ). This takes up a lot of your cognitive resources.

Less but not Incomplete

Next is that you need to choose the right and sufficient information. Giving out incomplete information that does not make sense. It becomes incomprehensible to your audience and they might end up misunderstanding and taking away the wrong message or even worse lose attention during your presentation.

Uses up a lot of cognitive resources

Every second counts during a short presentation. Creating a short presentation requires more focus, efficacy, and better attention to detail. Therefore, short presentations become cognitively more taxing to deal with.

Limited Interactive Elements

Furthermore, don’t beat around the bush while presenting. You need to come straight to your point and explain it in brief. Hence, you might not be able to add interactive elements like storytelling, activities, or social experiments. However, you could add these after you complete your presentations if extra time is left.

Duration and word limit per minute

The duration of short presentations might range from 2-15 minutes depending on the topic one chooses or the time limit given to them. However, the average duration of a short presentation could be around 7 mins.

Similarly, the average pace of the speaker should be 120-160 words per minute so that the speaker sounds comprehensive to the audience (however even this could differ from speaker to speaker).

The right duration and pace would affect the evaluation of the authority. This further might earn you some points so keep that in mind while presenting.

Checklist

It is important to keep the points mentioned above in mind as a guide for a short presentation. Hence to make it easier to verify, here is a checklist of the guidelines:

Effective short presentations in shorter time

Imagine that some client your organization wanted to have a meeting with since many days. They have suddenly cleared up their schedule and wants to arrange a meeting with you tomorrow. However, you still have not prepared the short presentation for the meeting, what would you do? Here are some tips that you could take into account

First off, starting with creation make your presentation as short as possible. The audience is not going to focus on the quantity of your content but the quality and the important points. Remember that even if your presentation is short, you should have a thorough knowledge of your content.

Try to add an interactive section if possible, this would help you connect with the audience but more importantly lessen your speaking part as the audience would take that up.

Consequently, keep your talking points simple. Do not add complex points and explanations making it difficult to remember in less time and recall during the presentation. You could add a story or personal experience that you remember, this way you would have less content to memorize as you already know it.

Lastly, even if you have less time to practice try to appear confident. As quoted “fake it till you make it.” This would possibly increase the audience’s belief in what you say.

If you want to be clued more up on how to prepare for presentation with no preparation time, learn from our video:

Short Presentation Examples

Short presentations are short with fewer points and its visuals are also simple and sober. There are no too fancy animations, transitions, or designs, just something that looks appealing and conveys the message effectively. Some of these kinds of presentations of a few brands are: –

Conclusion

Short presentations are a part and parcel of life used in every work-field, as well as for day-to-day purposes. Short presentations have several benefits but not without their challenges. Learning to make an effective short presentation is a skill to acquire. By correctly using all the guidelines there would be no reason for you to not have a successful performance.
