Class 12th ICSE-ISC English Paper Pattern

We, at Vedantu, have provided the English paper pattern for the convenience of the Class 12 ISC students. Two papers, namely Paper 1 and Paper 2, will be there for the exam. Both papers have 100 marks, and the duration of the examination is three hours.

Paper 1: English Language (3 hours) – 100 marks.

Paper 2: Prescribed Textbooks (3 hours) – 100 marks.

The class 12th ISC exams are upon us, commencing from February 13.   • The ISC Board class 12 English course consists of two papers of  80 marks and a duration of three hours each.
  • The questions will be of both objective and descriptive type.
  • 15 minutes of reading time will be provided and writing answers will be prohibited during this period.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions (i), (ii) and (iii) that follow:

(1) Mrs. Knight’s school, to which Katy Carr went, was a low, one-storey building, and had a yard behind it, in which the girls played at recess. Next door to it was Miss Miller’s school, equally large and popular, and with a yard behind it also. Only a high board fence separated the two playgrounds; and a feud raged constantly between the two schools as to the several merits of the respective teachers and their methods of teaching.

(2) Mrs. Knight’s had one great advantage over the other; it possessed a wood-shed with a climbable roof, which commanded Miss Miller’s premises, and upon this roof the girls used to sit in rows, turning up their noses at the foe in the next yard.

(3) One morning, Katy was late for school. She could not find her things. Her algebra, as she expressed it, had “gone and lost itself” and the string was off her sun-hat. She ran about searching for these articles and banging doors, till Aunt Izzie was out of patience.

(4) “As for your algebra,” she said, “if it is that very dirty book with only one cover, you will find it under the kitchen table; and here is the hat-string. Now, stand still and don’t fidget! You shan’t stir till I have sewed it on properly.”

(5) It was not easy to do so, but Katy bore it as well as she could, only shifting perpetually from one foot to the other. The minute she was released, she flew into the kitchen, seized the algebra, and rushed like a whirlwind to the school.

(6) She ran as fast as she could, but time ran faster, and before she was half-way there, the town clock struck nine, and all hope was lost. She marched into school in a very cross mood.

(7) A day begun in this manner is pretty sure to end badly, as most of us know. All the morning through, things seemed to go wrong. Firstly, Katy made errors in her grammar lessons. Then her hand shook so much when she wrote her composition, that the writing could hardly be read and Mrs. Knight said that she had to do it all over again. This made Katy crosser than ever; the tears came into her eyes from vexation, and she made a bolt for the yard as soon as the bell rang, climbing up all alone to the wood-house roof, where she sat with her back to the school, trying to get her face in order before the rest should come.

(8) Miss Miller’s clock was about four minutes slower than Mrs. Knight’s, so the next playground was empty. It was a warm, breezy day, and as Katy sat there, suddenly a gust of wind blew, and seizing her sun-hat, which was only half tied on, whirled it across the roof. She clutched after it as it flew, but too late. Once, twice, thrice it flapped and Katy saw it lying in a crumpled little heap in the enemy’s yard.

(9) This was horrible! Not merely losing the hat, but to lose it so! In another minute, the Miller girls would be out. Was it to be endured? Never! Katy set her teeth, and sliding rapidly down the roof, seized the fence, and with one bold leap, vaulted into Miss Miller’s yard.

At some point in our life, whether at school or at the workplace, it is likely that we are called upon to give a speech. At the ISC Examination, the candidates may be required to write their view point on a particular topic in the format of a speech delivered to a live audience. So, it is more or less like an opinion based essay but in the format of a speech, where the students are required to use 'T' and give their personal opinion. The following steps will help you feel confident in the writing process that is integral to giving a good speech no matter what the topic may be.

First, collect all the relevant information on the topic and write accordingly. Secondly, write exactly what you want to convey to the audience. As Winston Churchill said: "If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time with a tremendous whack."

The introduction of the speech should immediately let the audience (readers) know what to expect from the speech. Then go on to elaborate what is said in the introduction proving it with examples. Make an apt conclusion to your speech by including a strong affirmative statement.

                                        Are We Happier Than Our Forefathers?

Respected Principal, Teachers and Dear Friends,

I am here to express my opinion on whether we are happier than our forefathers or not.

If we think that happiness consists of material comforts, we are happier than our forefathers. However, if we consider happiness as a state of well-being characterised by contentment and joy, our forefathers were far happier than we are.

If our forefathers woke up from their eternal sleep, they would be wonderstruck at the changes brought about by their children in this world. In their days, there were no railways, telephones, motor cars and aeroplanes. There was no electricity and there were no comforts which we enjoy now. They had to travel on foot for days together if they  wanted to visit distant places. There was not much advancement in medical science and the epidemics used to take a heavy toll on human lives. They were haunted by unknown fears and strange superstitious beliefs. They were at the mercy of forces of nature and paid obeisance to every object of nature out of ignorance. True, the innumerable inventions of science have made our lives more comfortable  but we are not happier than our forefathers. Our forefathers led a simple life. They were  strong, healthy and enjoyed simple things in life. On the other hand, we have become  ease-loving. We do not like to do manual work as we consider it below our dignity As  such, we have become slaves to machines.

Our forefathers had fewer wants, which they satisfied by utilising the products of nature. The present generation, on the other hand, has more needs that can be satisfied only with money. Our ancestors used to brush their teeth with the bark of a tree, bathe with cold water using some herbs. They had paranthas or chapattis with home-made butter for breakfast The present generation needs toothbrush and toothpaste for cleaning their teeth, soaps and shampoos for bathing, geysers to heat water, and bread, butter, eggs, tea and coffee for breakfast The present generation is seen hankering for comfort all the time. We have adapted ourselves to a life of luxury. We are ready to sacrifice health in order to pursue material happiness.

Our forefathers lived in a joint family where they were happier than we are. They cared for one another. The bond of love which they shared is non-existent in the nuclear families of the day The idea of material acquisition has led to conflicts in society. It has led to loneliness in life. Family values are dwindling and shallowness has crept in. This was not the case during the time of our forefathers. There were practically no divorces and a single earner could raise a big family which is quite unimaginable today. So the boom of expectation that has come with increased affluence has brought with it poverty in human love.  The secret of happiness lies in the simplification of our wants and a calm and collected attitude towards life. This was what our forefathers had. Definitely they were happier than us.

A crucial part of speech writing is handling objections. A speech is a monologue, thus there is no time for queries or concerns. An effective speech will handle any issues that may arise during it. As a result, you’ll be prepared to react to queries that the audience may have. You can organize the information into a flow chart to make speaking easier.

Writing a good speech is an art. However, with constant practice and the right approach, one can write a good speech. We can write a good speech by using the following steps.

Select a goal and a topic: What topics would you like to discuss and why? Your goal should be to inform, entertain, or persuade your audience, and your topic should be something you are interested in and knowledgeable about.

Examine your target audience: You are talking to whom? What requirements and interests do they have? To what extent do they already understand your topic? Adjust your speech to the comprehension and interest level of your audience.

Examine your subject:  Collect data from reliable sources to bolster your primary arguments. This could involve doing your own research, speaking with experts, or reading books, articles, and websites.

Construct an outline: This will assist you in structuring your ideas and guarantee that your speech follows a logical flow. Your introduction, key ideas, illustrative examples, and conclusion should all be included in your outline.

Compose the speech: You can start writing your speech once you have an outline. Make sure your wording is precise and succinct, and refrain from employing excessive jargon. Make sure your speech is the right length and flows naturally by practicing giving it out loud.

The purpose of a speech is often to inform or persuade an audience. 

Speeches are usually written to be spoken directly to an audience and can be used to entertain, influencing the listeners that the viewpoint of the speaker is correct. 

Speeches can also be used to encourage the audience to take action or to change their behaviour in some way; for example, to join a particular school club or society, or to recycle more. 

The ways you use language and vocabulary when writing the words of a speech will depend on the audience and the purpose you are writing for; for example, in a speech to a group of teachers and parents giving your views on a recent proposal, formal language is most appropriate.

  • think about the audience that the speech is for  – are you giving your speech to a group of people you know, or do not know, or a mixture of both? If you know your audience well, you may be able to relax a little, but a speech is still a formal kind of talk and would usually not include slang
  • whether your audience are likely to disagree with what you say – you will need to consider any possible objections and deal with them. Use language carefully to make objections seem less significant; for example, using phrases like ‘A few people may still think, however’
  • the reason you are giving this speech and how you feel about this topic  – try to imagine the words of your speech as you would speak them out loud. Your tone of voice must match your message, so choose words that appeal to the emotions of your listeners. Focus on what you want your audience to know and feel by the end of your speech
  • how to engage your listeners  – f or example, you might use inclusive words or phrases like ‘we’, ‘all of us’ and ‘our’ to make your listeners feel that you are all on the same side.
  • Plan where you want to finish your speech and how you will get there before you start writing – t h e structure of a speech is usually in three parts. For example: 
  • An opening that grabs your audience's attention and makes the overall topic of your speech clear  – for example, pose a question to the audience where you can predict the answer.
  • A well-structured, supported and developed argument –  for example, to support your argument you might use real life examples or anecdotes.
  • A powerful conclusion  –  for example, group your final words or ideas in threes to help make them memorable or end with a thought- provoking question or image and thank your audience for listening.
  • Organise your ideas into paragraphs as appropriate – this will help you to develop and support your points convincingly, to build your argument and/or offer a full explanation of a particular point of view.
  • S how the connectio ns between ideas in sentences and paragraphs  –  where a new point or idea follows on from what you have already said you might use linking words or phrases such as, ‘in addition’, ‘likewise’ or ‘similarly’.

What is the format of a proposal writing ISC ( According to CISCE )

You need to write it in 150 words that not too much. You need to be very precise and formal. Your proposal should be explanatory in a very precise manner . 

The format of proposal writing involves these important steps:-      

Title:-  

The word PROPOSAL has to at beginning of the heading in   the CAPITAL letter, 

The whole Heading should be in the  CAPITAL letter ( You can also underline the heading ). 

It should be centrally aligned.

Heading & Introduction: - 

The Ultimate  Benefit  of the proposal.  

( As you can see in the specimen from CISCE given 👇 ), not a too long maximum of  20-27 words. 

You have to give 2 reasons for placing such a proposal The reason will have to be written in 2 separate sentences but in one continuous paragraph.

Objectives:-

But REMEMBER: that the introduction and objective should not contain the same points they should be different from each other. It has to be written in 2 separate sentences but in one continuous paragraph.

The most important part. It completely discusses the solutions and procedure for the proposal.

In not more than 4 points ( In consideration of the word limits ).  

The list of measures has to be written in the form of points giving bullets or numbering.

The 4 points should contain these Questions Answers: - 

POINT 1:   What is the eligibility?

For example, Students from classes 8 to 9 are eligible to participate .

POINT 2:  What is the requirement?   

For Example, For setting up the book library we need two bookshelves, one computer, some desk & table.

POINT 3: How many human resources requires? 

For Example, Two to Three teachers will be needed to guide us.

POINT 4: Time, Budget, and Venue?

For Example, We would require 2 months to complete the project and the proposed budget is 5000. And the venue will be the 2nd-floor language room.

Concluding Statements:  It is very important to give a nice concluding statement. 

For Example, We hope that the proposal will be accepted so that the book library becomes a reality in the life of the school.
