Summer Institute

Qualitative Methods: Overview and Semi-Structured Interviewing

Course date: july 15-26, days: m-f (1:00-3:00pm).

This course will focus on semi-structured, or in-depth, interviewing, with a brief introduction to other qualitative methods, including observation. Semi-structured interviewing is often most helpful in understanding complex social processes.  We will examine the goals, assumptions, process, and uses of interviewing and compare these methods to other related qualitative and quantitative methods in order to develop research designs appropriate to research goals. The course will cover all aspects of interviewing, including how to decide who to interview, how to ask good interview questions, and how to conduct successful interviews. Students will conduct interviews, and discuss the process and outcome of those interviews. We will examine the strengths and weaknesses of this methodology, particularly through discussion of some of the critiques of these methods.

Courses in Statistics, Data Analysis, and Quantitative and Qualitative Methods

umich qualitative research courses

From May through August, the ICPSR Summer Program offers more than 80 courses in statistics, quantitative and qualitative methods, and data analysis for researchers across the social, behavioral, and health sciences. Our courses cover a wide range of topics and techniques, from introductory statistics and regression analysis to advanced multilevel models and Bayesian analysis to machine learning, among others. Our broad curriculum is designed to fulfill the training needs of researchers throughout their education and careers. Both our in-person and online courses feature extended access to lecture recordings and course materials after the course ends.

At the ICPSR Summer Program, you will learn how to understand your data while gaining valuable research skills that will help you address real-world problems and advance policy solutions. Instruction features hands-on, applied work in several popular statistical software packages. You will also get individual feedback and guidance in one-on-one consultations with our respected faculty.

General Sessions: Comprehensive Methods Program

Our general sessions are a comprehensive methods training program comprising more than forty courses and lectures, including network analysis, longitudinal analysis, time series analysis, formal models, data visualization, and more. Select the classes you want and customize your own unique schedule!

Topical Workshops

For those needing to learn a specific methodological technique in a shorter time frame, we offer dozens of topical workshops on a range of techniques and topics, including mixed methods, structural equation models, group-based trajectory models, difference-in-difference designs, item response theory, and more.

“The most meaningful moment of my ICPSR camp experience was the ‘Ah hah!’ feeling I had when the instructors sat with me and helped me find an answer for myself. More important than just teaching me the material, they helped me build my self-confidence (which anyone who has ever dived headfirst into major statistical analyses knows is half the battle).”

Anna Pomper (MPP '24) receives 2024 Spectrum Center award

Headshot of Anna Pomper

Ford School graduate student Anna Verduin Pomper (MPP '24) was among four graduating University of Michigan students and a student organization recognized by the Spectrum Center for their outstanding contributions to campus. Pomper received the Excellence in Student Leadership Award, given to a member of the graduating Lavender Class or student organization whose work throughout the year has made a lasting and significant change in the LGBTQ community at the University of Michigan.

Pomper “approaches community-building through fun, and sees fun and joyful engagement as a central aspect to processing our experiences as queer individuals,” noted one nominator. “She has truly transformed the atmosphere for LGBTQIA+ students through her leadership, kindness and passion,” said another. Pomper has helped lead student organization Out in Public as its social chair, spearheading a variety of social events, a Pride in September school climate initiative, community book shelves, and engagement outside the school. She is graduating this May with a Master of Public Policy from the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.

Other awardees include Dr. Oluwami (Wami) Dosunmu-Ogunbi, Joseph Pearson-Green, Atticus Jean-Josephine Spice and LGBTQ+ Nursing.

All five outstanding recipients were honored at Spectrum Center's annual Lavender Graduation , a year-end celebration of LGBTQIA2S+ graduates that originated at U-M in 1995 and is now held at schools across the United States. This year, Michigan's Lavender Graduation was co-sponsored by the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs , Rackham Graduate School , and Michigan Engineering's Office of Culture, Community, and Equity .
