Yuvraj Singh Career

Yuvraj was sent to Mumbai by his father to train at the Elf-Vengsarkar Cricket Academy. His strenuous training and hard work paid off when he was selected in the U-19 Punjab State Team. An ambitious Yuvraj then worked harder and made it to the U-19 Indian cricket team.

Yuvraj Singh’s first-class debut for Punjab against Orissa in the 1997-98 Ranji season. He was dismissed for a duck on his opening innings. In the U-19 Coach Behar Trophy final, Yuvi scored 358 against Punjab against Bihar. The whole Bihar team together scored 357.

In the 1999-00 Ranji Trophy season, Singh scored brilliant innings of 149 against Haryana.  His good performances saw him picked for India U19 against Sri Lanka in February 1999. In 2000, Yuvraj was selected to play in the India U19 team at the U19 ICC Cricket Cup, Sri Lanka.

Yuvraj scored 203 runs in 8 matches at an average of 33.83 and strike rate of 103.57. In the semi-final against Australia U19, Yuvi scored 58 as he powered India 284.  He followed it up with 27 of 40 balls as Boys in Blue beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets to lift their maiden U19 World Cup.

But the 19-year-old showed his intent to perform under pressure scoring 84 off 80 balls in the quarter-finals against Australia. The then world champions contained the likes of Brett Lee, Jason Gillespie, and Glen McGrath.

After mixed performances in the 2000-01 season, both domestic and international, Yuvi returned with strong outings in the NatWest Series. The series featured 3 teams- India, England and Sri Lanka.

Yuvraj’s all-round performance of 3/39 and 64* won the man of the match in the first match at Lords. In the next match against the Lankans, Yuvraj scored 31 runs and built a crucial partnership with Mohammed Kaif. The left-handed allrounder continued to show amazing performances including the final.

Yuvraj came to bat at 146/5 after 24 overs, with 325 runs to chase. Impossible right! Yuvi and Kaif built a steady partnership and went on to win the match with 3 balls to spare. Yuvraj scored 69 of 63 balls in a win regarded as the Men in Blue’s greatest ODI victories. He then went on to become one of India’s indisposable middle-order batsmen until 2011.

After his inspiring return from defeating cancer, Yuvi was not able to regain his position in the Indian team. After missing out the ODI format for 4 years between 2013 to 2017, Yuvi made a blockbuster return.

He scored 150 against England in the second game after returning. However, he played his last ODI months later in June against the West Indies, scoring 37.

ICC Cricket World Cup

Yuvraj Singh has played in three world cups for India – 2003, 2007, and 2011. In 2003, WC, Yuvi’s performances in India’s matches against England (42), Pakistan (50*), and Kenya (58*) helped India reach the finals. With the ball, he picked 5 wickets in the 5 matches he bowled. These are highs to be noted in the biography of Yuvraj Singh

In 2007, Yuvaraj hit his peak form. However, while he was able to help India win the T20 World Championships, he would have been disappointed that he was not able to do the same in the World Cup.

In the three matches, Yuvraj scored 136 runs with an average of 45.3. He scored 47 in the shock loss against Bangladesh in the first group game and followed it up with a brilliant 83 against Bermuda. However, Yuvi was unable to help much in the third game as India lost to Sri Lanka and were knocked out of the Carribean.

2011 ICC Cricket World Cup

Yuvraj Singh was on an absolute tear in the 2011 ICC World Cup. He won the man of the match award 4 times in the tournament. He was Mr. consistent whenever the team needed him to chip in some runs or break a partnership taking some crucial wickets. In nine matches, Yuvraj scored 362 runs and took 15 wickets with his slow left-arm spinners to emerge as the man with the golden arm for his country.

Yuvraj Singh bagged player of the tournament award in World cup 2011

Test Career

Yuvraj Singh made his test debut for India in the 2003 New Zealand tour of India. In his first match at Mohali, Yuvi scored 20 and 5*. After a 5-month gap, Yuvraj was selected for the tour to Pakistan. He impressed with the scores of 59,112 and 47 as India went to win the series against their arch-rivals.

Incidentally, all of Yuvraj’s test centuries have come against Pakistan. 2 years after his first century, Yuvi went on to score 122 for a losing cause for the Men in Blue in Lahore. His third century, which is also his highest score in test matches came at Bengaluru in 2007. Yuvi scored 169 in 203 balls as India drew the match and won the series.

Just like many players, Yuvraj Singh made T20 international debut for India in the T20 WC in South Africa. Yuvraj was not impressive on his first two matches as he scored 1 and 5. He came back with a bashing performance against England with 58 off 16 balls. Yes, this was the meach in which he hit Stuart Broad for six sixes.

He followed it up with another man of the match performance against Australia, scoring 70 in 30 balls. Needless to remind how crucial his performances were as India went on to win the maiden T20 World Championships.

Yuvraj Singh started his Indian Premier League career at Kings XI Punjab. He was their captain in the first two seasons. In the 2010 IPL season, KXIP came second in the league stage of the tournament but lost their semi-final to the Chennai Super Kings.

Yuvraj Singh took his first T20 hattrick against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on 1 May 2009. 2 weeks later he picked his second hattrick against former franchise Decan Chargers by dismissing Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Symonds and Venugopal Rao.

In 2011, Yuvraj was purchased by newcomers Pune Warriors and was appointed as their captain. He scored 343 runs at an average of 34.30, including two half-centuries as Pune finished 9th.

Yuvi made the headlines in the IPL 2014 auctions when he was purchased for Rs 14 crores by the RCB. He had his best IPL season as he scored 376 runs in 14 matches with an average of 34.18 and strike rate of 135.25.

The following season, Delhi Daredevils purchased for Rs 16 crores. After a below-par season with 248 runs with an average of 19.07 and 118.09 strike rate, Yuvi was purchased by the Sunrisers Hyderabad the next season for Rs 7 crores.

He had a successful IPL campaign with the SRH. Yuvi scored 38 runs from 23 balls in the finals and won the IPL title. The 2018 IPL season was the worst as he scored only 64 runs with an average of 12.80 for the KXIP.

Prior to the 2019 season, Mumbai Indians purchased him for ₹ 1 crore. However, Yuvraj did not contribute much in their title-winning season, leading the franchise to release him.

Yuvi played for six different teams in IPL

Defeating Cancer – Highlight in Biography of Yuvraj Singh

The experience of going through chemotherapy led him to start his new great initiative “YouWeCan” which helps cancer patients in their treatment.

To rise again to the international level, Yuvi started from the basics again. With his relentless hard work, he led the Punjab Team to begin the second innings of his career. And, then the lightning struck again when Yuvi scored 600 runs in just 5 Ranji matches. He continued the form in the IPLs followed and was the most expensive player in 2014 and 2015.

Yuvraj Singh, Hazel Keech welcomed their 2nd child in August this year.

Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh's wife, Hazel Keech, recently opened up about her postpartum struggles. Ms Keech and Mr Singh got married in November 2016. They welcomed their first child, a baby boy in 2022. In August this year, the couple welcomed their second child, a baby girl named Aura. Now, in an Instagram post, Ms Keech spoke about her postpartum hair loss journey and revealed why she decided to donate her hair for wigs to cancer-survivor kids.

Ms Keech addressed a phenomenon that many new mothers can relate to - postpartum hair loss. She said that she often sees new moms cutting their hair shot but never understood the reason behind it until she experienced excessive hair loss herself. She even jokingly described the challenges new mothers face.

"I always noticed new mums cut their hair short and i never understood why. I later learned about postpartum hairfall, which must suck when you're adjusting to a new reality of tiny humans who, like a motion sensor, cry or poop the moment you step into the bathroom," Ms Keech wrote on Instagram.

India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has retired from international cricket.

Yuvraj, 37, was player of the tournament when India won the 2011 World Cup and played a key role in the World Twenty20 triumph in 2007.

He was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2011 but returned after treatment. He played 40 Tests, 304 one-day internationals and 58 T20s in a 13-year international career.

A destructive left-handed middle-order batsman and left-arm spinner, Yuvraj famously hit England bowler Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over at the 2007 World T20.

He scored 8,701 runs at an average of 36.55 in ODIs with 14 hundreds and 52 fifties, and took 111 wickets at 38.68 apiece.

His last appearance for India came in an ODI against West Indies in 2017.

He was part of the victorious Mumbai Indians squad at this year's Indian Premier League, playing four matches. He said the 2019 edition would be his last IPL.

"Cricket has given me everything and that's the reason why I am standing here today," Yuvraj said.

"It's been a love-hate relationship with the sport in retrospect.

"At this age I can manage some kind of fun cricket. I am going to go and enjoy my life."

Few people can recall, but Yuvi and Deepika became friends because they both have a sports background. It was reportedly a brief relationship. In an interview, Yuvraj once discussed their split “I had just returned from South Africa when we met in Mumbai through mutual friends. We felt a connection and were curious to learn more. We didn’t spend enough time together to determine whether it would last a long time. She eventually moved on, and I did too.” Deepika apparently developed feelings for Yuvraj Singh when Dhoni was striving for her affections. They were spotted together at a number of events, which started the dating rumours. Back then, rumours that they even got engaged in a private ceremony were common. As soon as the rumours of their romance started, they quickly faded. They were spotted together at a number of events, which started the dating rumours.

  • Yuvraj Singh – Kim Sharma

yuvraj singh wife biography

Yuvraj Singh and actress Kim Sharma were in a serious relationship for over 4 years during the early years of his cricket career. According to reports, the two split up because his family did not approve of their relationship, and they both moved on. Kim Sharma, the Mohabbatein star, is well-known as Yuvraj Singh’s ex-lover. The ex-couple dated for about four years before splitting up in 2007. While some attribute their break-up to Kim’s abusive nature, it was later revealed that the couple split up due to Yuvraj’s mother’s disapproval of the relationship. They reportedly dated for four years while Yuvraj was developing his cricket career. Their romance did not, however, result in marriage. Kim has never mentioned it in public.

  • Yuvraj Singh – Hazel Keech

The couple has consistently insisted that it took time and work for their relationship to grow into what it is now. The two first connected at a friend’s party, but their romance was anything but traditional. In a previous interview, Yuvraj discussed it and said, ‘I first met Hazel in 2011 at a friend’s birthday and what caught my attention was her delightful smile. She was actually not grinning at me. But later that night, I managed to get her attention, and I even praised her for the role she played in the movie Bodyguard. However, Hazel had no interest. I must have asked her to go out for coffee seven or eight times, but she never responded! She left me perplexed. I’ve been shot down before, but being shot down so frequently was something else. I assumed she was seeing someone else, so I made the decision to end it,’ he said.

The cricketer was also given a cancer diagnosis in this year, so naturally, pursuing a girl who was obviously not interested took a back seat. The cricketer acknowledged that he, too, had not experienced love at first sight. ‘I don’t think it exists. When a person is 16 or 17 years old, they experience ‘love at first sight.’ It took three arduous years for destiny to bring them back together ‘She was listed as a friend on my friend and actor Angad Bedi’s Facebook page in 2014. I told Angad to stay away from her because I liked her and was surprised that she had made friends with him after only a brief introduction. I then sent her a request, but it took her three months to accept it. After knowing each other for three years and three months, we became friends, and I told her that after all this time, I deserved to go on a date with her. Now, she gave her consent.’

Yuvraj Singh wife

It was a date that took three years, so Yuvraj admits to doing his research to impress his lady love. ‘I learned about her work and that she had appeared in Bombay Dreams and the Harry Potter movies. In fact, when she learned that the latter was one of my favourites, she was happy.’ Yuvraj finally asked Hazel to marry him on a Bali beach after a year of dating. He admitted, ‘I really don’t think I’m very good at romance, so I was understandably nervous. The couple announced their engagement on social media in order to finally put an end to all relationship rumours. Yuvraj tweeted, ‘Yes I am engaged, because I found a friend for life in Hazel Keech. ‘Yes, it’s true; I’m getting married to Yuvraj,’ Hazel further tweeted.

Yuvi explained why he is so infatuated with Hazel in his conversation ‘Hazel is a genuine, honest person who is aware of the real me, in contrast to most people who are only interested in my life because they are motivated by some agenda. It’s reassuring that she has no interest in what I do on the field. She has the same outlook on life as I do; we both enjoy having fun and pushing ourselves to do our best. When you are with someone like that, life is interesting.’ Hazel’s response was brief: ‘I’m so grateful to have found such an amazing person,’ she said. Yuvraj proposed to Hazel Keech in 2015, and they wed on November 30, 2016.

Yuvraj Singh’s Struggles

There aren’t many athletes in sports history who have returned to the top after beating cancer. Some of the athletes who fought their way back include the cricketers Simon O’Donnell and Dave Callaghan, the cyclist Lance Armstrong (despite his controversial actions), the ice hockey player Mario Lemieux, the basketball player Edna Campbell, the baseball player Mike Lowell, and the football player Eric Abidal. In terms of Indian athletes, Yuvraj Singh stands out as the sportsperson who overcame cancer and was back playing for his country. It was during the World Cup that he would wake up in the middle of the night, struggling to breathe and coughing profusely. After the World Cup, a scan for his chest cavity revealed a tumour, but like any of us, he couldn’t believe it and, more importantly, he ignored it because cancer meant leaving cricket, so he kept playing.

Yuvraj Singh cancer

It wasn’t until January that further tests revealed that tumour was malignant — a germ cell cancer called a mediastinal seminoma was diagnosed, it was located in between his heart and his (left) lung and it grew about 14 centimetres like a ball. About seven months after India won the World Cup, in November 2011, it was revealed that Singh had a lung tumour. Three months later, it was determined that he had a mediastinal seminoma, a germ-cell tumour between his lungs, and that the tumour was cancerous. It was a huge shock to hear the news. It was difficult to accept that Singh had been in such severe pain the entire World Cup. The all-rounder would later admit that his ordeal actually started earlier than the ICC competition. During India’s January 2011 tour of South Africa, he claimed he was throwing up blood.

Yuvraj Singh net worth

By the time the World Cup arrived, the discomfort and fatigue had gotten worse, and he was concerned for his health. Yuvraj’s doctor recommended chemotherapy, and on January 26th, he travelled to the United States for treatment. His chemotherapy began in February and ended in March. In addition to this treatment, he received Ayurvedic treatment and went to rehabilitation in May of the same year. Cancer, one of the most common diseases in the world today, was once thought to be a deadly disease whose name shakes the person from head to toe, but people chose to fight it. Was he not afraid? How could he possibly fight it? Yes, he was scared, and as a result, he postponed the treatment. But can anyone escape the truth? He faced his fears of getting battered and realised, ‘Cancer does not mean death.’

Yuvraj Singh

In one of his interviews, he stated, ‘Don’t be afraid… Be optimistic… Please don’t think your life is about to come to an end… Take sound advice and act as soon as possible… If you have a problem with your system, don’t ignore it… Look at me, I never thought I’d be able to play for India again, but I’ve beaten cancer… God has blessed me with this opportunity, and my love of cricket has drawn me back. Yuvraj Singh persevered despite the trauma, though. He received treatment in the US and completed the three chemotherapy cycles in the beginning of 2012. He even set a good example by being open about his experience with the public and frequently posting photos of himself while he was recovering. In April 2012, Singh finished his treatment and went back to India. He eventually returned to the Indian team for the World T20 in August of that same year.

Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh may have joined the Indian team not long after receiving cancer treatment, but he was never quite the same player he had been before. He was kicked out of the team due to his lack of form and fitness, but he was able to return to international cricket in 2013 and 2016, before playing his final game wearing the India jersey in June 2017. But what stands out in all of this is Singh’s determination to fight. He never gave up, whether it was the fight against cancer or the later, indifferent form with the bat. He established the You We Can Foundation in 2017 to support those in need and raise awareness about cancer. Yuvraj wrote The Test of My Life: From Cricket to Cancer and Back as his autobiography following his battle with cancer

With the dawn of a new era in Indian Cricket under the captaincy of another legendary left-handed batsman, Sourav Ganguly , youngsters like Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif got the opportunity to wear the blue colour and represent the senior team.

Yuvraj Singh made his ODI debut on 3rd October 2000 in the ICC KnockOut Trophy against Kenya. The first-timer did not produce any notable performances in the beginning.

After his inspiring return from defeating cancer, Yuvi was not able to regain his position in the Indian team. After missing out the ODI format for 4 years between 2013 to 2017, Yuvi made a blockbuster return.

Yuvraj KreedOn

Yuvraj Singh was on an absolute tear in the 2011 ICC World Cup. He won the man of the match award 4 times in the tournament. He was Mr. consistent whenever the team needed him to chip in some runs or break a partnership taking some crucial wickets. In nine matches, Yuvraj scored 362 runs and took 15 wickets with his slow left-arm spinners to emerge as the man with the golden arm for his country.

Yuvraj Singh started his Indian Premier League career at Punjab Kings . He was their captain in the first two seasons. In the 2010 IPL season, KXIP came second in the league stage of the tournament but lost their semi-final to the Chennai Super Kings .

Defeating Cancer

In the shining lights of Wankhede stadium in 2011, when the whole nation was feeling the joy of being Indian, the man of the match’s cancer surfaced. People thought Yuvi might not be seen at all but he rose like a phoenix from the ashes and then return proves the mettle this man possesses.

And, all hell broke loose, when he posted his career’s best total of 150 runs in 127 balls. Every shot he hits now strengthens the belief of cancer patients across the world that life can be normal after the illness. As normal as Yuvraj Singh hitting those nonchalant sixes. Cancer survivors couldn’t have asked for a better brand ambassador.
