First impressions have a big impact on how others perceive you, so how you introduce yourself to others is extremely important. Many people call an introductory speech an elevator speech, because it should be succinct enough that you could introduce yourself and tell someone about your goals or interests in the time it takes to ride an elevator. • State your name in the very first sentence of your speech. This can be very straightforward: "Good afternoon!/Good morning! My name is Deshawn Smith, and I am a computer programming student at the University of Arkansas."
• If the introduction is work-related, mention your interests and your career goals together in the same sentence. This will save on time and convey that your personal interests can serve your professional goals. For example, "I am working on an app that allows people to order pizza from their Twitter account."

For example, "Because of my background in app writing and my extensive network of professional connections, I have a strong grasp of what today's young professionals are looking for. • You are trying to present yourself as a professional while making a strong and lasting impression.
• If you're trying to sell yourself to a group of new colleagues, you probably won't need to tell them about your family life, or anything outside of work that isn't directly relevant.

• You can simultaneously demonstrate your skills and experience, while presenting yourself as a forward-looking person who is always learning and developing. For example, you could say, "I spend a lot of time attending app conventions and conferences so I can learn what audiences are looking for. I pride myself on staying on the cutting edge of app design."
• Try to tie this into your broader outline of your career goals and personal development.

Revising and Practicing Your Speech

• Make sure that if this is an assignment, you stay within the assigned guidelines.
• If your speech is supposed to be 3-5 minutes, a 7-minute speech and a 2-minute speech are equally inappropriate.
• If you are giving a brief introductory speech in an interview , be certain that you don't go over the recommended time.

• Avoid long rambling sentences, and use direct and concise prose as much as possible.
• Think about your sentence structure carefully. Reading your speech out loud will help you determine when you have overly long sentences that need to be restructured.

• Practicing in front of other people will enable you to gauge whether your speech captures the interest of your listeners.
• Think about which parts of the speech were successful and which parts weren't.
• Try to get as much detailed feedback as possible by asking specific as well as general questions after your speech.

• Stick to one or two main points you want to convey about yourself. You can always add more if time allows it.
• Depending on the audience and function of your speech, you shouldn't allow the focus to become too narrow. For example, if you're introducing yourself to a crowd of prospective investors, you'd focus on your skills to build their confidence in you. If you're introducing yourself to a general audience -- say, for a speech class in college -- you can be a bit more wide-ranging.

Delivering Your Speech

• You can also try some visualization techniques to help ease your nervousness and give you confidence for your speech.
• Imagine the way you will feel when you have finished delivering your speech and are met with smiling faces and resounding applause. Then channel that confidence into the actual speech you are about to deliver.

• Avoid crossing your arms or clutching your hands.
• Don't stare down at the ground or cling to the table or lecture in front of you.
• Make eye contact across the room in a measured and controlled way. Avoid lingering on one person, but also avoid darting your eyes back and forth restlessly.
• Try making eye contact with one person on the left side of the room, then one person on the right side of the room. Shift across the room, but in a controlled way that feels natural and relaxed.

• Aim for a comfortable, conversational pace of dialogue.
• Practicing your speech in front of other people, or recording it and listening back are great ways to judge the tempo of your speech.

• Self-deprecating humor can help you come across as humble and likable. For example, if you've accidentally skipped forward in your speech and have to circle back, you could say something like, "And now I'm going to cycle back and tell you something I forgot before. If you wanted to get to know the "real me," you're seeing it now!"
• You can also make a quick, humorous nod to your mistake and move on. For example, if you come out and you mess up the very first line, you could say something like, "Wow, excuse me. Here I am so excited to tell you about myself that I've mixed up all my words. Let me try that again."
• Don't be too self-deprecating, however. You are still trying to ensure people remember you for your strengths and competencies. Move on quickly.

There are six content areas to cover. The first three are essential. The remaining three lift your speech from 'basic' to something a little more interesting.

Giving a Speech About Yourself?

If you are a successful professional—or you aim to be—it is likely that you will be asked to speak about yourself at some point in your career. Of course, all Toastmasters learn to do this in their Ice Breaker speeches. But a more robust speech about your background and how you attained your current stage in life might be appropriate with a promotion, accepting an award or some other community recognition.

Even seasoned speakers can be shaken by the idea of speaking at length about themselves. Didn’t our parents teach us to be humble, work hard and keep our heads down? Giving a speech about how successful we are might feel immodest or boastful. Not if it’s done properly.

As a professional speaking coach, I advise clients who come to me for help with crafting a speech about themselves to use two simple strategies: 1) Tell your life story in three clearly defined acts; and 2) Remember that no one becomes successful alone. While discussing your experience, be sure to give credit to the family members, colleagues and mentors who guided or supported you through your career. Highlight your success while thanking the people who helped you find it.

Structuring Your Story

Look at your life story as if it were a play: Act I: When you were young; Act II: When you were more mature and starting your career; and Act III: When you achieved success. Audiences want to know your personal story and details about your journey to success. Try to convey where you came from, how hard you worked and what motivated you through your life, and then finally, how it feels to be where you are now—always remembering to mention the people who helped you along the way.

Here’s an example of what I mean: Consider Alex, a successful executive, who was to give a speech about his role as president of a real estate franchise. Speaking at the company’s annual conference, Alex’s audience of 700 realtors knew he was a multimillionaire. They did not, however, know of his humble beginnings.

“This is the secret to talking about yourself comfortably: give the best lines to your characters.”

His opening: “I never met my mother and didn’t meet my father until I was 14 years old. I was raised by my grandmother, and life was perfect.” Scene I, Act I of his life “play” gives the audience a clear sense of who he was as a child. He continued by describing his first hero—his grandmother. He talked about the influence she had on him, her philosophy that would inspire his own, the unconditional love she gave and her death when he was 14. That’s when Alex went to live with his father. Suddenly, he was forced to live with a person he never knew and stepbrothers and sisters he hadn’t known existed.

The owner of the business where Alex worked when he was 20 years old brought in a business consultant who noticed Alex and realized that he had great potential and initiative. The consultant guided him toward going into business for himself. That consultant gave him the courage to pursue entrepreneurism.

In this act, Alex talks about the man he referred to as his adoptive grandfather. This man also encouraged and guided him to expand his business beyond what Alex had believed possible. Alex included the actual words of support his adoptive grandfather said to him. This is a great example of the kind of story you can tell about yourself that helps the audience feel connected. In this way, his three influencers were the “heroes” of the speech, rather than Alex himself.

Alex’s presentation described the influence of his grandmother, a business consultant and his adopted grandfather. This is the secret to talking about your self comfortably: give the best lines to your characters. Repeat their advice in your speech—let them deliver the dialogue.

When you are putting together a speech about yourself, design it in three acts and give credit to all who helped put you on the right path. This strategy will help alleviate any anxiety.

Allow me to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Varsha Patil and I am a 19-year-old aspiring lecturer.

Growing up in a close-knit family has been one of the greatest blessings of my life.

My parents, grandparents, older brother, and I make up a family unit that is overflowing with love, care, and support.

We have a strong bond and spend much of our time together, enjoying meals, vacations, and just being there for each other.

It is these shared experiences and memories that have helped shape me into the person I am today.

I have always had a passion for education and teaching, which is why becoming a lecturer has been my childhood dream.

My love for learning and helping others is what drives me towards this goal.

In my free time, I love to immerse myself in music, watch movies, and engage in creative pursuits such as drawing, cooking, and reading.

My mother is a homemaker and my father is a farmer, and I strive to repay their love and support by working hard and giving them a good life.

Having such a loving family is truly a blessing, and I am grateful for all the joy and love they bring into my life.

Short Speech On Myself

My name is Varsha Patil. I'm an undergraduate student and I'm 19 years old. I live in Maharashtra and I am a second-year B. Com. student. We have six people in our family. My mother works as a homemaker, and my father is a farmer. One of my siblings is older than I am. I consider myself to be a very quiet and shy person. People usually assume from my shy attitude that I am unable to communicate confidently.

However, it is not true because I am very knowledgeable about many various topics. But before I talk, I want to consider the surroundings and the circumstances. I would like to be humble and considerate enough to respond to queries when someone approaches me. I enjoy a variety of things, including listening to music, reading books, and watching movies. I adore reading romantic novels and gripping thrillers.

There are many alternative careers that may be pursued, but Animator & Graphic Designer is the one that interests me the most. I think one should choose the career path according to their interests and passion. An animation course is time-consuming to study. It is quite challenging and calls for a great deal of perseverance and hard work. I have faith that I can overcome these obstacles and achieve my dream.

Greetings, I'm Varsha Patil, a 19-year-old student who is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree from University Of Mumbai. I'm in my second year of study and call the state of Maharashtra my home.

I'm blessed to be part of a loving family of six, where my father is a farmer and my mother a homemaker. Despite being the youngest, I wear many hats, including being a supportive sister to my siblings, a dutiful daughter to my parents, and a dependable friend to those in my life. My neighbours are good people and are like my family; we communicate well with one another and never fight. We plan picnics during the winter and summer breaks since I adore them so much.

I'm a dreamer who is driven to achieve my goals and make the most of my opportunities. I have a passion for basketball and also enjoy developing my musical skills through piano lessons. Like everyone, I have areas I need to work on, but I am constantly striving to better myself and overcome my flaws. That's a brief snapshot of who I am. My Work Ethic

I excel academically at my college. I take part in all of the college's extracurricular activities and do well. I excel in both intellectual and athletic pursuits. My college has a sizable garden, and a sizable playground offers all the gear needed for athletics. The atmosphere at my college is pleasant, wholesome, and tranquil.I always prefer to finish my work by the deadline. I'm very good at organising my time and upholding discipline in my life. I always do my best to help others and find solutions to their problems. I offer them advice and suggestions when they ask for them whenever they require support and assistance.

I firmly believe in having great dreams and establishing personal objectives. I have a lot of goals and activities I want to do consistently in life. It entails looking after my parents, siblings, and neighbours. The most crucial thing is that I commit to serving others. Nothing is more fulfilling than lending a helpful hand. I must therefore thoroughly educate myself on the things I want to do. In addition, I enjoy learning something new every single day. I focus on acquiring critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, analytical, and communication skills while I'm studying. In addition, I pride myself on being on time and being very punctual.

My Temperament

I am a really happy person because I am very friendly to everyone around me. Spending time with friends makes you feel happier. Additionally, it offers the chance to participate in their life. We all hang out and enjoy excellent meals cooked at home or occasionally out at restaurants. We occasionally take trips or picnics with friends and family. I have the good fortune to go to lovely places and gain new knowledge there.

Al Murray: I’ll turn myself in to the police before next gig in Scotland

The comedian best known for his act featuring a politically incorrect pub landlord fears the new hate crime laws could land him in trouble

The comedian Al Murray has suggested he could turn himself in to the police in anticipation of falling foul of Scotland’s new hate crime laws.

Murray, best known for his act featuring a politically incorrect pub landlord, fears the legislation could land him in trouble.

“This is a very interesting moment actually, that piece of legislation. To be honest, for comedians it is a wonderful opportunity to get yourself arrested and get written about. Or maybe next time I go to Scotland I should simply turn myself in,” he said.

The new legislation creates a crime of “stirring up hatred” concerning religion, transgender identity, disability, religion, sexual orientation or age.

Murray said that he would not be able to tone down his character now after two decades as his pub landlord’s alter ego .

“I am too far down the track with him. The one I maybe want to experiment with is being me, but I sort of would not know where to start,” he said.

Murray says the pub landlord now talks less about nationalism in his shows but he remains committed to National Service.

“There is no sneering. But I do have a bit in the current show about national service because the pub landlord is all for it now that he is too old to have to do that for himself. They always get a murmur of approval,” he told Radio 4’s Loose Ends:

In 2022, Murray admitted that he felt sympathy for politicians after he stood for Parliament.

Murray, who campaigned for a seat at South Thanet in Kent in 2015, says that life in Parliament is a “rotten life”

He earned just 318 votes in the constituency, but came away shocked by how much voters appeared to want him to “screw up”.

Murray, who also faced conspiracy theorists alleging he defrauded voters, said he had no plans to repeat his run in politics.

“The strangest thing about that is that I came away quite sympathetic towards politicians, in a way I didn’t expect.

“At the time I was very much a plague on their houses. At the time [I was saying]: ‘They are all no good, duds and the ones that aren’t duds are corrupt.’

“I very much felt that. By the time we were done, I had some sympathy for the fact that all anyone wants from politicians is for them to fail.

“The central demand from the British public is that politicians fail and journalists are trying to catch them out.

“I came away thinking, that is a rotten life. That is a rotten situation to find yourself in.”

My students rioted after I said, 'I stand with Israel.' Here's how we came together after.

What happened to me was frightening and horrible and something that no teacher, staff member or student should have to experience, particularly in a school building..

As teachers, we try to impart to young people that life often defies binary delineations. As Jews, we can be heartsick and horrified over the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas , the death, suffering and capture of hundreds of Israelis and now, as the war drags on, thousands of innocent Palestinians.

We can demand the release of Israeli hostages and fight for humanitarian aid for Gazans now starving. We can fight against hate and for free expression. We can embrace security, freedom and self-determination for both peoples.

What is not up for debate is this: our basic humanity. That goes for students, and for the adults who guide them.

Two days after the Hamas massacre, one of us (Karen Marder, a teacher at Hillcrest High School in Queens, New York) attended a vigil with others who were devastated by the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust.

Karen: News of the torture, rape and slaughter of young people at a music festival especially disturbed me. I saw their zest for life in my own young adult children and the thousands of students I’d taught over more than two decades. I posted a photo on Facebook of myself holding a sign reading, “I stand with Israel.” That act, in the hours after the Hamas assaults, would lead to a devastating response from students I care about deeply.

Several of Karen’s students circulated screenshots of the photo and called for a riot targeting her. On Nov. 20, hundreds of students stormed the hallway and tried to get into her classroom, cursing and threatening , and calling for her to be fired. Karen was elsewhere in the building but watched all of this on monitors, and she later saw videos that students shared online. In a cruel irony, the lesson she had planned to teach on the day of the riot was about hate crimes.

I met with my students to talk about our shared humanity

Karen: I had a choice to transfer to a different school. I stayed to use the experience to connect, to listen, learn, debunk misinformation and combat intolerance. The day I returned to school, a Palestinian friend (a fellow teacher) and I met with students. I answered their questions and shared my feelings. I repeated the hurtful, threatening and untrue things that students had said during the riot and on social media − helping them connect with my humanity, and their own. Many of my students hugged me and apologized for what had occurred.

For me, it was difficult to go back to work. What happened to me was frightening and horrible and something that no teacher, staff member or student should have to experience, particularly in a school building.

Dealing with that trauma and the press surrounding it is a long process, one that will take time to heal. However, I went back because I knew one thing: I HAD to talk with my students. I had to make them understand the context of my post and why it was posted when it was.

I had to listen. I had to understand what messages they were absorbing and where they were coming from. I had to answer their questions, address their fears and confusions and simply be there.

Further, I had to show them that I wasn’t going to run away, even though some of them behaved inappropriately. They had to see, through my actions, that I would not give up on them, that I’d keep coming in, again and again.

That said, those conversations were not easy. Trust, once breached, must be earned back. Teachers must model so much for students: forgiveness, active listening, acknowledging wrongs and sitting with uncomfortable feelings. We don’t have to paint things as black or white, right or wrong. We humans can see nuance, shades of gray, areas of commonality among difference. This is what gives me hope as a teacher navigating the challenging world of school and students, but also, for the situation between Israel and Palestine. There is another path forward for all humans: one of peace, negotiation and decency. As teachers, we can start our students on that road.

As acts of hate against Muslims and Jews have surged in recent months, and as the culture wars have targeted people for their race, sexual orientation and gender identity, people have become scared. We hear this from teachers all the time.

Karen’s experience and her response show a way forward. Schools must be safe and welcoming spaces − safe from physical violence and safe for people regardless of who they are.

Education can help us build empathy

That means acts of antisemitic and anti-Arab hate must be addressed, not ignored. But we need more than that. Education is about knowledge, of course, but knowledge is more than memorizing facts. It involves critical thinking, empathy and deepening understanding of and respect for diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Karen: I didn’t hide. And neither should others. If something is brewing, we must act, not pretend it will go away.

That’s what Karen’s union, the United Federation of Teachers , did days before the riot and that is what New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks has pledged to do.

In our public schools and our public squares, we must responsibly exercise our right to free speech; combat hate, intolerance and misinformation; and foster respectful discussions and debates even, and perhaps especially, about challenging topics.

Karen’s actions are a ray of light in our hope for a peaceful solution to this most intractable of conflicts, anchored in our shared values of empathy and basic humanity.
