Essays About Celebration: Top 6 Examples Plus Prompts

Life provides us with many reasons to celebrate. Read this article for helpful essay examples and writing prompts you can use to write essays about celebration.

From honoring people on their birthdays, commemorating historical events, and holding family gatherings for the holidays, there seems to be a near-endless number of occasions to celebrate.  Celebrations help us feel good about ourselves and the milestones we have achieved. We commemorate things essential to us, whether joyful events like a birthday or Christmas or a sad event like a loved one’s death anniversary. They are also essential to our culture, as they help us stay connected to our roots and heritage and preserve longstanding traditions. Without a doubt, celebration plays an important role in everyone’s life.

If you’re having trouble writing essays about celebration, read the essay examples featured below.

Top 6 Essay Examples

1. festivals by everett smith, 2. i hate christmas. here’s why i’m celebrating it for the next 2 months. by elisabeth ovesen, 3. a birthday reflection by chava gal-or, 4.  why a pandemic christmas is the best damn holiday on the planet by reuben salsa.

  • 5. The Importance of Family Traditions by Lisa Cossey
  • 6. What is celebration? by Julian Baggini

5 Writing Prompts For Essays About Celebration

1. why do we celebrate, 2. different ways people celebrate, 3. are celebrations a waste of money, 4. the cultural importance of preserving celebrations, 5. my most memorable celebration.

“Festivals are part of one’s custom, culture and tradition. They are there for us to celebrate. It helps us forget our routine. It gives us some momentary, mental and physical relaxation and thus frees us from die shackles of monotonous work. It is a celebration, entertainment or series of performances of a certain kind, often held periodically.”

Smith writes about why celebrating festivals is so enjoyable, particularly in his native Kuwait. The month is filled with festivities, special events, and prayer. Smith also describes New Year’s Eve in Kuwait: it is celebrated with fireworks, friends, and family as in other countries. Festivals connect us to our traditions and allow us to relax, have fun, and celebrate.

Check out these essays about being grateful .

“This year, Christmas is self-care and a means of survival. This year, I will not allow my mother’s slight to dictate my joy or the absence thereof. This year, she doesn’t win. I will break the chains created by her malfeasance, and I will celebrate this Christmas. I will celebrate the New Year even though, for many of us, it will most likely be as tragic as the one before.”

Ovesen recounts a Christmas experience in which her mother gave gifts to all the children but her, after which she never celebrated Christmas again. For decades, she did not celebrate Christmas; however, this year, she says, she will make up for all the missed celebrations. She does not want her mother’s mistreatment to control her happiness, so she chooses to celebrate life, family, and missed time.

“One family even brought me a gift basket that literally brought tears to my eyes.  Another friend made me a gluten free cake which has now ruined my sons ever making me cake again; hers was too good!!!!  One gift that I always treasure is the phone call I receive each year from my brother; this year was no exception.  Finally, I was also able to hang with one friend in the morning and another friend in the evening.  Life is and was truly good!”

In her short essay, Gal-Or reflects on her birthday that year and what she has realized about life. She lists a few lessons she has learned, including the importance of having a voice, quality time, family, and friends. Her birthday celebration is simple; she only mentions meeting up with two friends, which makes her extremely happy. Gal-Or’s essay is an excellent example of how different people like to celebrate in different ways; some are content with the simplest celebrations.

“I’m thrilled that this year I have no obligation to visit. That finally, I have a legitimate excuse not to plaster on a fake smile, hold my tongue, and pretend that we all get along. This Christmas promises to be one of the merriest ever, knowing it’ll just be me, my wife, and the kids. Simpler times. No extravagance. No kowtowing. No begging and pleading in-laws to stay even though you want them to leave. No emotional regret for ruining yet another Christmas.”

Salsa remembers the Christmas celebrations before the COVID-19 pandemic and all the stress, squabbling, and discomfort that came with them. He recalls the chaos at previous Christmases with his in-laws and is relieved that the times keep them apart. Since the pandemic keeps the extended family from celebrating, he is relieved that their celebration will be relaxed, with just him, his wife, and the kids.

5. The Importance of Family Traditions by Lisa Cossey

“No matter what your family tradition is or what your family chooses to create, just having something for all family members to look forward to each year is important. Traditions help create warm, positive memories that can be recalled fondly and draw family members back to one another year after year.”

Cossey’s essay simply describes how her family celebrates Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, they have several traditions, including camping trips, baking pies, and video calling other family members. These traditions strengthen familial bonds and create memories to cherish. Cossey also gives examples of other family traditions,  including movie nights, reading books, talent shows, and cooking.

6. What is celebration? by Julian Baggini

“Perhaps on reflection, the best thing to do would be to curl up with a good book. The case is, as ever, inconclusive. But in a world where dogmatism is increasingly the greatest threat, perhaps the tentative nature of philosophical discourse is precisely what we should be celebrating, quietly.”

This essay about celebrating World Philosophy Day opens with a philosophical question. How exactly should such an eccentric occasion be celebrated? Baggini proposes having a philosophical discussion in a cafe, as many great philosophers once did, and a Greek-style party with philosophical exchanges. However, in typical philosophy fashion, the answer is inconclusive. Baggini suggests instead celebrating the “tentative nature of philosophical discourse.”

We all know the types of occasions that people celebrate, but why do people continue to celebrate? In your essay, look into the different reasons people celebrate, whether superstitious, cultural, sentimental, or entirely different. Don’t just give examples of occasions to celebrate; explain why people celebrate them.

Essays about celebration

Think of an occasion such as a birthday, holiday, or religious festival and write about how people typically celebrate it- What do they eat? Who do they celebrate with? What are other traditions connected to it? You may include information from the internet, but your essay can be based entirely on your opinions and experiences.

Some say that celebrating is a waste of money, particularly for occasions like Christmas, as it takes away the holiday’s true meaning. People spend so much on a celebration just to have a “superficial” understanding of the occasion. For an engaging argumentative essay, write about whether you think these sorts of celebrations are wasteful. Be sure to include perspectives from both sides of the argument, and have a strong rebuttal to the opposing viewpoint

Celebrations reflect one’s culture and heritage, familial, regional, religious, or national. Are festivities and celebrations essential to keeping a culture alive, or are there other ways to do this? You do not need to have a solid “yes” or “no” argument in your essay; it can be more nuanced as long as it is explained well.

An easy way to write an engaging essay is by reflecting on a celebration you found particularly memorable. Write about the celebration in detail- Who was there? When was it? How did you celebrate? How has it impacted you today? From a childhood Christmas to a loved one’s funeral, this essay has many possibilities.

3 Reasons Why You Should Host a Career Day at Your School

Teaching Strategies

Even the littlest learners are posed with one of life’s biggest questions, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Thinking that far ahead into the future can be overwhelming, but career awareness activities, like Career Day, help students figure out and pave their pathway to adulthood.

What is Career Day?

Career Day gives students an up-close look at different career paths and connects their learning to the real world. Community members and leaders come into the classroom to share insights about their career and details about necessary education and training for career success. Meanwhile, students get the opportunity to listen to presenters, ask questions, and consider what careers pique their interest.

Why host a Career Day?

Students in elementary school all the way up to high school benefit from Career Day. Check out why you should host a career day for your students!

  • Nurture Career Exploration – Animator, engineer, web designer, oh my! Career Day exposes students to careers they may not have imagined. Students have the chance to learn about careers that align with their interests and skills, so they can start to narrow down what careers to pursue in the future.
  • Give Students a First-Hand Look –Reading about a career in a textbook is very different from learning about a career straight from someone in the field. Career Day provides an interactive and dynamic learning experience, where students can ask questions directly to professionals and presenters can invite students to tackle real-world problems.
  • Connect with the Community – Students don’t just learn from their teachers. Community members and leaders can play a vital role in a student’s education. Career Day provides a platform where students can directly interact with members of their community. Having a diverse group of presenters allows students to see themselves represented in different career paths. Presenters can serve as role models or mentors for students.

Career Day may look a little different now due to shifts to remote and hybrid learning, but it’s still possible for students to connect with community leaders and explore different career options virtually.

Your school may have lined up some great speakers and demonstrations and your kids may be over the moon that they get to dress up on Career Day as their favorite occupation. Kids really relate to the topic of careers and community helpers, because they can connect their real-world experiences to it.

So why not build on the fun ahead of time, expand your student’s vocabulary, language skills, and knowledge and really help that learning stick! Here are 10 fabulous ideas for career day activities to get you started.

Set the stage for excitement with these ideas for career day at school.

1. start exploring careers the week before with a few wonderful books.

Since I love combining literacy and learning, my first idea for career day at school is to start with some great books about occupations and community helpers. Whether you find them in your library or on YouTube, these are great choices:

  • Whose Vehicle is This? Written by Sharon Katz Cooper is great for your younger students. This book shows each vehicle and asks “Whose vehicle is this?” Have your children guess, then read the description. There are also fun facts about the vehicles and what each person who uses that vehicle does. For instance, in the description of a mail carrier, students will learn that mail vehicles have steering wheels on the right instead of the left!
  • Whose Tools are These? and Whose Hat is This? are two more great books by Shannon Katz Cooper you’ll want to check out.
  • Career Day by Anne Rockwell tells about children in a class who bring their “special guests” (their parents) to their career day. Each guest has something interesting to share about their career, from bulldozer driver, to judge, to crossing guard.
  • Clothesline Clues to Jobs People Do  by Kathryn Heling and Deborah Hembrook takes a look at what’s hanging on different clotheslines to figure out what job each person does.
  • Belinda Baloney Changes Her Mind by Becca Carnahan. Belinda finds that the world is full interesting jobs and keeps changing her mind about what she wants to be when she grows up. She worries about that, then learns that that she doesn’t need to decide yet…just have fun exploring the possibilities!
  • Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty and David Roberts is a fun book about a girl who has lots and lots of questions… a budding scientist for sure.
  • Andrea Beaty and David Roberts have many more fun career books like Iggy Peck, Architect and Rosie Revere, Engineer .
  • What Do You Do With An Idea?  by Kobi Amanda is the story of a boy with a big idea. Was it too strange and weird? Should he abandon it? No, because it’s good to see things differently… and you might even… change the world! A wonderful book to encourage young thinkers, future inventors and entrepreneurs!

2. Guess Who? Grab Bag

Fill a bag with descriptions of community helpers and careers. Students reach in and read the description and try to guess who it is. For younger children who are not readers, you may want to use pictures of their vehicles, clothes, or tools. (If you need pictures, check out my Pronouns and Plurals, Dress me Community Helpers activity below.)

3. Make a Paper Bag Village with Community Helpers

I love this idea for career day from In The Bag Kids Crafts. Provide brown paper bags, crayons or markers, scissors, and construction paper. Have each child choose a different community helper and create a “shop” or place of work. Have your children tell all about what’s in their shop or business, and what people do there.

10 ideas for Career Day at school including playing 20 questions. Kids ask each other questions like "Where do I work?" to try and figure out which community helper they are. speechsprouts.com

4. Twenty Questions

Put a picture or list a career on each card. For large groups, pin a card with a clothespin to the back of each child’s shirt (or play with cards in headbands for smaller groups). Have the group walk around and take turns asking each other questions to try and figure out what their career is. You may want to set a 5 or 10-minute time limit. Provide a list of sample questions for younger children such as:

  • Do I use a vehicle to do my job?
  • Do I work with animals?
  • Can my job be dangerous?
  • Do I wear special clothes for my job?

This is such a fun idea for career day at school (or week)! Some students may need support in asking questions, so I’ve made cards for you with sample questions they can ask while playing this game. Download them here: 20 Questions Career Day Game Cards.

If you’d like to save yourself time with ready-made picture cards, scroll down. The cards in either of my career and community helpers resources below would work great!!

5. Play Three to One Thumbs

For older children, have them choose an occupation and tell 3 reasons why the job may be great (Thumbs up!), and one reason that it might be challenging (Thumbs down).

6. Compare/Contrast

Have older children choose two occupation cards from a bag or bowl and list ways the occupations are similar and ways they’re different. The similarities may be trickier and your kids may need a little help with it to think outside the box. For instance, how are a pilot and a veterinarian alike? They both require a lot of training!

For younger children, try cards with the vehicles, and compare/contrast the vehicles such as bulldozers, police cars, airplanes, or firetrucks.

My Pronouns and Plurals, Dress me Community Helpers pack (check it out below) has cards perfect for this activity

7. Job interview.

Have kids pretend to interview for a job. Talk about what to do and what not to do. This is a great social skills lesson too!

8. Career Taboo Game

I love this idea for Career Day from Miss Sepp’s Counselor Corner. Students are divided into 2 teams, which take turns drawing a card that contains a career and two “hush” words. The student who drew the card must describe the career to his/her teammates so they can guess the occupation… but without using the “hush” words! For instance, for “Florist” the hush words are “flowers” and “arrange.” The post includes a file to download the Career Taboo cards. Fun for upper elementary!

Many of these activities are great for your Community Helpers theme too!

If you need more hands-on activities for your preschoolers and kindergarteners, my Pronouns and Plurals, Dress me Community Helpers activity will get your littles excited to participate!

Dress the community helpers! Fun preschool cookie sheet activity with cards for a community helpers matching game. Wh questions, pronouns, and plurals worksheets too. See more community helpers and career day ideas at speechsprouts.com

Put the cutout “helpers, clothes, and equipment out on a cookie sheet. Your littles get to dress the people as different helpers as you practice pronouns, naming the helpers and their equipment, and more. I’ve included cards for games and plenty of printables to practice a variety of syntax targets with your community helpers theme.

There’s a diverse selection of 8 different people children can choose from, helping them find someone who looks like them!

Pronoun, plurals, and WH questions mats and worksheets are included to give you tons of versatility in targeting syntax, wh questions, sentence structure, and community helpers vocabulary.

I hope these Career Day ideas for elementary school get you excited about planning for this theme!

8 tips for a successful career day at your school, topics: career day, elementary, middle, high school.

At Quackenworth we believe that every school should have a Career Day. It provides students with a road map to a career, motivates them to research employment opportunities, and connects important community members with schools. Over the years we have participate in numerous Career Day events around the country. From these experiences we have compiled a list of five characteristics from successful Career Days we’ve attended:

career day celebration essay

1) Create a single point of contact – It’s always best to allow one person to be the single point of contact for your Career Day event. Receiving multiple correspondences from multiple people is annoying, especially when you are answering the same questions. 2) Invite professionals with non-traditional jobs – While it is certainly beneficial to invite well-known, traditional professionals such as police officers, doctors, and lawyers, students also need to be exposed to lesser known professional “titles.” This may include individuals in sales, management, politics, etc. 3) Prepare students – It’s always refreshing to see students who have prepared a list of questions. It shows that the teachers and students take Career Day seriously. 4) Appoint the appropriate professions to the right grade level – Make sure that you assign the right person to the appropriate grade level. Some professions are harder to explain at the lower grade levels. Typically, a kindergarten student will have seen a doctor or police officer and thus would be easier to explain. You want to make sure that the Career Day participant feels like it was worth coming to your event. It’s always a good idea to ask the participant if they prefer a specific grade level. 5) Encourage participants to bring props – Props are always a great way to demonstrate a profession. They make presentations more interesting than dialogue-only presentations. Props can not only include the professional devices that are used on the job, but also iPad, computers, and visual presentations (e.g. videos). 6) Make it about the journey and the profession – Encourage the speakers to not only talk about their jobs but also what it took to get there. How were they as students? Did they go to college? What was college like for them? What challenges did they have? Students need to hear stories of individuals overcoming obstacles. 7) Take pictures – Assuming you have clearance from your district to post pictures of the students, it’s a good idea to document a Career Day event with a photo and/or video montage. It provides the students, teachers, and participants with lasting memories and shows that your school is connected with the surrounding community and is an active, progression institution. Post the pictures to your school’s web site or Facebook page. 8) Inquire about Internships – Career Days at the high school level are much more meaningful as the students are closer to entering the workforce. As a Career Day coordinator always ask participants if there are internship opportunities for the students. This further strengthens the bond between the employers and your school.

Republic Day Essay in English for Students: 100, 200, 500 Words

India's citizens celebrate Republic Day on January 26 yearly with great excitement and passion. It is celebrated to recognise the significance of being the Sovereign Democratic Republic, which was established on January 26, 1950, following the implementation of the Indian Constitution. Additionally, it is a time to recall and celebrate India's historic independence from British rule. India ultimately gained its independence from British domination on August 15, 1947. For more than 200 years, the British ruled the country.

India gained independence, but a government was urgently needed to ensure the country's smooth operation. The nation's citizens commemorate and honour the great leaders and freedom warriors on this day for their contributions to the country's liberation.

The day that our Constitution was implemented in 1950 is commemorated as Republic Day on January 26 each year. After this day, our country truly became democratic and independent. The diligent effort of great men like Mahatma Gandhi and the many other freedom fighters who fought and gave their lives for the country's sovereignty resulted in the adoption of the Indian Constitution, which is the fundamental law being enacted.

People of all races, religions, colours, and backgrounds come together on this day to commemorate the event with tremendous zeal and enthusiasm. The Indian Military participates in the event and displays the grandeur associated with it in a large parade held in Delhi, the nation's capital. The parade, which begins after the president hoists the national flag and citizens honour martyrs who gave their lives while defending the nation, displays the country's pride and vibrant diversity.

Schools host a variety of cultural events in honour of Republic Day. With tremendous energy and excitement, students take part in different programmes. All educational institutions hold competitions for essay writing, speeches, sketching and painting, among other things. Students also perform plays and skits on the freedom fighters who fought for India's independence.

Republic Day holds a historical significance for the nation. The nation first put the Constitution into effect on January 26, 1950. The Indian National Congress elected Jawaharlal Nehru as its leader, and on January 26, 1930, Poorna Swaraj, or Independence Day, was inaugurated.

Republic Day has a significant historical impact. On August 15, 1947, Indians took their freedom back from the Britishers but we had no constitution, political parties, or governance structure. India put the Constitution into effect on January 26, 1950. On January 26, 1930, Poorna Swaraj was proclaimed, and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was chosen to lead the Indian National Congress. However, it was only on August 15, 1947 that we gained our independence.

After India gained independence, a unique constitutive parliament was chosen to establish the Indian Constitution. Dr B.R. Ambedkar headed the constitution-drafting committee. Other nations' constitutions were also considered when drafting India’s constitution. The Indian Constitution was created, at last, 166 days later.

It was designed to guarantee equal rights to all Indian citizens, regardless of their religion, culture, caste, sex, or creed. The Constitution of India was adopted and put into effect on January 26, 1950, and that day is known as Republic Day. Additionally, it signifies the end of British control and the establishment of India as a Republic State.

The country’s capital, New Delhi, hosts the Republic Day parade, which the Ministry of Defense organises. India's 3-day Republic Day festivities begin at the gates of Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President's residence, with a meaningful ceremony. It continues on Rajpath through the India Gate to Raisina Hill.

India's cultural, social, and military strengths are on display in the parade. Nine to twelve distinct Indian Army battalions march past alongside the Navy and Air Force while dressed in full regalia and official insignia. This parade includes twelve contingents from different paramilitary groups in India and police forces. The President of India, who serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, accepts the salute.

Every Indian citizen values Republic Day. This holiday, one of India's national celebrations, evokes everyone's sense of patriotism. This is one of the occasions that aids in introducing the younger generation to our wonderful Indian heritage and culture. This is the day on which we honour the great leaders and freedom warriors who gave their lives in defence of the nation.

Republic Day also teaches us the value of togetherness and how it supported the Indian freedom movement in its struggle against the British Empire, which was far more potent. Mahatma Gandhi's nonviolence movement showed us how to overcome an adversary far more powerful than us without using force or spilling any blood. The Constitution ensures that there is no caste, creed, or religious discrimination in the country, and Republic Day serves as a reminder of this.

On the eve of Republic Day, the Indian President awards ‘Padmas’ to the people of India. To receive a Bharat Ratna or Bhushan Padma prize, you do not need to hold a specific title. A special committee nominates people. The Bharat Ratna and the Padma Awards are the two highest civilian honours. There are three different categories for the Padma Bhushan Award: Padma Vibhusan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.

The second-highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhusan, is granted for exceptional and distinguished service.

The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian honour granted for exceptionally meritorious service.

The Padma Shri is India's fourth-highest civilian honour, granted to individuals for exemplary service.

British Watch Brands Have Their Day

The Alliance of British Watch and Clock Makers, which organized the fair, said it was the first of its kind in the country.

Reporting from London

  • April 13, 2024

On a bright morning in early March, about 100 people waited patiently outside a grand Edwardian building near Victoria Station, waiting to be the first to enter British Watchmakers’ Day , a fair dedicated entirely to showcasing a few dozen brands based in Britain.

Inside, there were displays of timepieces from labels that have received international attention, including Christopher Ward and Fears , alongside many less well-known brands, such as Geckota, Isotope Watches, Pinchbeck and Pinion. Many founders, including the celebrated British watchmaker Roger W. Smith , staffed their companies’ tables.

And in spite of the event’s name, the fair included a couple of clock manufacturers, Sinclair Harding and Thomas James Clocks, as well as an Irish watch brand Sidereus.

An exterior view of Lindsley Hall with a line of people standing in front.

In all, 44 companies paid 395 pounds to 1,395 pounds ($500 to $1,760), depending on floor space, to participate in the eight-hour show. And the fair’s organizers, the Alliance of British Watch and Clock Makers, said it was the first of its kind in the country.

“There’s really no other opportunity to see them all in one day,” said Mickler Bentley, a retired teacher who traveled to the event from his home outside of Waynesville, N.C.

Jan Oles, an engineer who lives in Dresden, Germany, came with his wife, Marta Kasprzycka-Oles, a career coach. She said she had planned their weekend trip to London around the fair and to celebrate his 30th birthday a few days later.

In addition to watch shopping at the show, Mr. Oles said, “I’m happy to meet the other watch geeks.”

The alliance said 1,200 tickets, at £10 each, had been available, a number dictated by the venue’s capacity — and that all of them had been sold by mid-February. About 10 percent of the attendees had registered from other countries, including the United Arab Emirates, France, Italy and Poland.

It was the first live event organized by the alliance, which was founded in October 2020 and is the only trade body that supports the British horology industry and encourages watch collectors worldwide to consider British timepieces.

The alliance started work on the event in earnest in late 2022, but “the idea of a British-focused watch fair was always in the plans,” said Alistair Audsley, the group’s chief executive. It was inspired in large part, he noted, by Record Store Day, an annual event at many independently owned music retailers in many countries.

“I remember thinking, ‘What if we could do the same thing with the British watchmaking sector,’” he said. “It does speak to something that I believe is fairly distinctive about the sector, which is that you have got watchmakers or watch brands from an Accurist, which you can buy for about £110, up to a Roger Smith at £500,000.”

Nearly half of the exhibitors had created special timepieces for the event. There was, for example, a one-off creation from Mr. Smith: a 38-millimeter wristwatch with a single-wheel coaxial escapement in a red gold case. It was sold by lottery, with a reserve price of £297,500; the brand declined to reveal the final price.

Many options were considerably less pricey. Clemence Watches of Edinburgh created a version of its automatic Munro watch with the word “Britain” added to the dial; all four of the 37.5-millimeter stainless steel timepieces, each priced at £650, were sold during the event. And Beaucroft, headquartered in Cambridge, England, offered a special version of its 37-millimeter stainless steel automatic Seeker watch; all 25 of the £450 timepieces also sold.

“My hope is, in some respects, that people might discover the brands through their special editions,” Mr. Audsley said, “but also, of course, they will become aware of their other watches.”Inside the hall, an airy ground-floor space often used for antiques fairs and the like, there was quite a line for Studio Underd0g, a brand founded by Richard Benc in Brighton, England. It was selling two iterations of its Pizza Party watch: a manual-wind 38.5-millimeter stainless steel timepiece, priced at £550.

One dial was decorated with the image of a pizza covered in pepperoni, basil leaves and mushrooms; the other, ham and pineapple, which is a very popular, if unorthodox, combination in Britain. (As Danny Blueggel, who bought the ham and pineapple one to bring home to Naples, Italy, said of that variety, “It is a sin but sometimes you have to be a sinner.”)

Fans say that Mr. Benc’s mix of horology and sass — there’s an Underd0g watch with a watermelon face, too — is part of the brand’s appeal. “I like his creativity,” said Rick Kucharz, a British tax consultant who had flown in that morning from Amsterdam, where he lives, to attend the fair.

“It’s not only the look of the watch but the mechanics,” he added, noting, “It’s quite a good movement for the price.”

Pizza Party is a collaboration between Underd0g and the website Time+Tide Watches — and buyers were told the timepieces were available only through Mr. Benc or Andrew McUtchen, founder of Time+Tide.

At the show, the two men — dressed like pizza chefs in matching toques, red neckerchiefs and aprons — took orders while employees frantically folded pizza-style cardboard boxes to hold the sold timepieces. When the supply of 50 watches ran out, each shopper was handed a unique QR code to order one online, something of a concession to the model’s usual conditions of sale.

“We didn’t expect this level of demand,” Mr. Benc said.

“When we do online launches, there’s huge demand and people really are flurrying to the front of the queue, so it’s great to see that, in a physical event as well, that energy is replicated.”

Pizza Party wasn’t exclusive to British Watchmakers’ Day — the two versions were unveiled in January and will be sold at select watch fairs this year.

But the brand did make 25 copies of a vintage-inspired 37-millimeter stainless steel mechanical watch especially for the fair. Priced at £800 each, the limited edition sold out a few hours before the end of the event.

“It’s great to see this level of enthusiasm, not just for the brand, but for the show as well, and for British horology in general,” Mr. Benc said.

The alliance, which began with five brands, now has 93 members — with the newest addition, Bremont, officially joining the day before the fair. (It did not exhibit).

Members said the spirit shown during the event is indicative of the country’s industry as a whole. “Although we’re sort of competitors, there’s a real sense of community amongst the British watch sector, partly because we’re smaller,” said Mike France, chief executive of Christopher Ward, which had created a limited-edition £4,995 watch for the event.

“There’s a bit of Winston Churchill in all of us I think — there’s the British bulldog spirit. There’s the camaraderie — we kind of recognize that together we’re stronger.”

"Teacher Spice": What should an artist in academia look like? Not like me, I've learned

I've heard comments about my appearance from fellow writers throughout my career, and i know exactly what they mean, by jenny irish.

"You don’t look like an artist" is a dismissal I've heard since my 20s, when I first entered a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing program . It was actually the first thing anyone said to me, at the sign-in table for new students. When I gave my name to collect a lanyard and information folder, the person laughed. “You don’t look like an artist.”

I still remember what I was wearing that day because I had put such nervous and excited care into the decision: a navy-blue sheath dress from a consignment shop and gray suede wedge heels. For me, as I know is the case for many first-generation students from working-class backgrounds , school is serious business. The clothes that I’d carefully chosen reflected that attitude. Compared to the other new students, I realized, I was both overdressed and plain, but I’d wanted to look professional. Later in the day, another student would mistake me for an office worker and ask me where to collect their keys.

From my appearance — which is in many ways traditionally feminine — fellow writers have often come to a reductive conclusion: If I don’t look like an artist, then I must not be one. While this appearance-based assumption followed me throughout graduate school, nothing could have prepared me for how it would negatively impact my experiences as a new professor. Though many members of my graduate cohort would revise their assumptions after getting to know me, this has largely not been the case with faculty colleagues throughout my career.

For me, as I know is the case for many first-generation students from working-class backgrounds, school is serious business. The clothes that I’d carefully chosen reflected that attitude.

To me, it should be obvious that physical presentation is in no way a reliable indicator of artistic ability. The question of what an artist is supposed to look like, is, I think, a silly one, but because of the ways it has shaped my experience, it's one I’ve posed to myself as many times as I’ve told anxious students there is no “correct way” to be a writer — which is to say a lot . Like a lot .

Having considered this question across my years in the field, I believe the answer has to do with how one’s appearance can be used to code an individual, suggesting their memberships and alliances. Researchers in the social sciences have long recognized that people intuitively make assumptions about others based on their style of dress — often defaulting to unfair and unflattering stereotypes. In our current socio-political moment of exceptional division, distrust and anger, I now believe that my appearance allows miscoding. It can tell a story about me that I do not mean to tell, one that, in the fiercely liberal space of academia, inaccurately aligns me with conservative values. In my professional capacity, meeting a person for the first time, having not exchanged more than names, I am overlaid with a story that is dependent on assumptions about my identity, appearance and beliefs.

I am, of course, not alone in my traditionally feminine appearance activating a critique that spirals outward to encompass assumptions about political views and values. We see it in the controversy surrounding TIME’s decision to name Taylor Swift their 2023 Person of the Year . Though the magazine made a point to cite the unquestionable impact of Swift’s music globally, the millions of dollars she has donated to food banks and cancer research, and her rise from teen songwriter to international superstar, I have seen many responses that are mocking and dismissive. For some, Swift’s physical presentation and personality activate genuine vitriol. Opinion pieces describe her as “pleasant” and mean it as a dig. None of this is to say that Swift is undeserving of criticism, or has never been a bad actor, and it is unquestionable that she exists in a bubble of privilege. Rather, I am interested in how frequently critiques rely on elements of Swift’s appearance to insinuate that she is mediocre, unintelligent, and insincere. For two years, "Taylor Swift" was the nickname given to me by a small group of colleagues and graduate students, a shorthand evoking whiteness, blandness, a lack of intelligence, and the absence of any real artistic ability. I know that they believed I was too dumb to understand the insult. The truth is that I refused to escalate by responding.

"Taylor Swift" is not the only name-calling I’ve experienced as an artist in higher education. A senior professor — a person I barely knew — used to call me “Teacher Spice” (as in, the lost Spice Girl), and regularly commented on my clothes and shoes. For a semester, we taught back-to-back in the same classroom, and they would wait as their class filed out and mine filed in, cracking jokes about what I was wearing that day. If not enough to establish a pattern — Taylor Swift, Teacher Spice — there is certainly a relationship between these two nicknames: pop, unserious, frivolously feminine. Several years ago, a group of students I had not interacted with went to a colleague to express their distress at my “ tradwife style .” Thirdhand accounts are inevitably distorted, but I was told the students believed working with me would be unsafe. For all of our well-being, we decided this group should not be forced to interact with me, and they were not. The next cohort of students — who got to know me through the experience of taking a class with me — took no issue. We are, in fact, quite close. There is mutual respect and care.

Taylor Swift, Teacher Spice — there is certainly a relationship between these two nicknames: pop, unserious, frivolously feminine.

While I’m certain that people miscode me because of my appearance, I’m also sure that my somewhat traditional femininity would invite less negative attention if I were traditionally attractive. 2023 was the year of "Barbie ," and the film brought a renewed awareness that the hyper femme can still be feminist. While "Barbie" received fair criticism for her proximity to girlboss-style white feminism, we more generally watched as women around the world — even those who consider themselves quite progressive — enthusiastically donned heels and pink dresses to pose in the Barbie Box at theaters and celebrate the undeniable beauty of Margot Robbie. For a moment, the traditionally attractive woman could be admired for her smarts and savvy.  But just as I don’t “look like an artist,” I don’t look like a Barbie. Though my presentation is traditionally feminine, I’m five foot one, wear a size twelve, have curly hair that tends to frizz, and sport a gap in my teeth. The sudden acceptance of Barbie was not an acceptance of me.

Part of the reason that I dress as I do is a matter of practicality. Yes, I’m short. Yes, I’m chubby. I’m also a 36 DD. I do not carry my weight “well.” My proportions make finding pants difficult. A blouse is nearly impossible. This is the reality of living in my body. Dresses spare me a daily struggle to clothe myself in a way that is both comfortable and professional. Besides that, my students regularly tower above me, and I can only reach halfway up the whiteboard. Truthfully, heels give me just a little bit of lift, and I feel more confident in them. It’s a boost I need.

The secondary reason I dress as I do is just as personal. I grew up working class, wearing my brother’s hand-me-downs. When I started school, I was teased mercilessly for being “poor” and looking like a “boy.” Neither of these things is shameful to me, but that said, even as a child, I was attracted to what I called “pretty dresses.” Having worked so hard for my career as an artist and educator, the clothes I wear are now a gift to myself.

I love teaching, but my job as a professor — surrounded by artists and intellectuals — has obliterated my self-confidence. For years, I avoided publicity for any of my books. I rarely did events. I turned opportunities down. I did this because any positive attention for my work has consistently translated into attacks on my person. Now, I am trying to reclaim myself. I know I am a good teacher; I put my heart into the work. I know I am a good writer; I put my heart into the work. Despite years of bullying and belittlement, I have stayed in this profession because I believe education can positively change lives. I also believe that, at their core, those who choose to work in education, including the majority of my students and colleagues, are fundamentally good. Among their number are people I am grateful to know and feel lucky to work with. I just wish that the few who judge me on my appearance would make the effort to learn who I am instead.

Residents Outside Moscow Protest Power Outage, Demand Heating Amid Subzero Temperatures

career day celebration essay

Residents of a Moscow region town impacted by power outages have taken to the streets, demanding that local authorities restore heat to their homes as subzero temperatures grip the region, Russian media reported Friday.

At least 21,000 people had power knocked out in their homes on Thursday morning in the town of Podolsk when a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant, according to the Kommersant business daily.

The circumstances surrounding the incident at the plant in Podolsk, located some 50 kilometers south of Moscow, have not been disclosed.

The Telegram news channel Ostorozhno Moskva published a video of several local residents who gathered in the town's central square to demand the authorities restore their heating, as well as punish those responsible for the outage.

“The police arrived quickly to disrupt us. I wish they’d brought back heating as fast as they dispatched the cops,” the person recording the video could be heard saying.

A Change.org petition with identical demands was launched online, which, by Friday evening, was   signed by nearly 2,000 people.

“Since more than 24 hours have passed, we ask to punish all those involved in this emergency,” the petition reads, naming Podolsk Mayor Grigory Artamonov and the heads of local utilities as the culprits.

Households in the Moscow region towns of Khimki, Balashikha, Solnechnogorsk, Lyubertsy and Elektrostal also experienced heating loss  as a result of power outages, with temperatures in the area plummeting to minus 20 degrees Celsius, according to the investigative news website iStories.

The Podyom news outlet, without citing its sources, reported that prosecutors have launched an investigation into the outages.

Dwight Gooden in a good place as his memorable Mets career is celebrated at number retirement

career day celebration essay

Technically, it was a day to make it official that no Met ever will wear No. 16 again. But to the guest of honor, it was something more than that.

“I look at it not necessarily as a retirement,” Dwight Gooden said before Sunday’s ceremony in advance of the Mets hosting the Royals at Citi Field.

“I look at it more as a celebration.”

That celebration was about more than his 16-year major-league career, his 194 victories and his championships with both New York franchises.

“It’s a celebration of my career as well as my life off the field,” Gooden said.

That was a reference to the off-field problems, including a history of drug abuse, that sidetracked what likely would have been an even greater legacy.

But on this day, Gooden, 59, opted to look at his positive present rather than his complicated past.

Before the number retirement ceremony, Gooden said that while he regrets things such as missing the Mets’ 1986 championship parade, “I just think about where I’m at today, healthy mentally and physically.”

He also listed some of his baseball achievements and said, “I have nothing to be ashamed of about my career . . . I’m very proud of my accomplishments.”

As Gooden spoke to reporters, and later when he was on the field, he was supported by numerous former teammates, including Darryl Strawberry, Mookie Wilson, Mike Torrez, Tim Teufel, Rafael Santana, Jesse Orosco, Roger McDowell, Lee Mazzilli, Barry Lyons, Howard Johnson, Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling.

Sandy Carter represented her late husband, Gary.

Strawberry, who suffered a heart attack last month, got the biggest cheer during introductions.

Gooden also was joined by his children and many extended family members. (He is a great-grandfather, by the way.)

After a video tribute, light rain began to fall and the wind kicked up on what otherwise was a warm, sunny day.

But the ceremony went on. The Mets presented Gooden a framed jersey and a bronzed pitching rubber.

When Gooden referenced his two stints with the Yankees, fans booed, but each time he reassured them, saying, “I’m always a Met.”

He recounted his several attempts to rejoin the Mets after his initial departure in 1994, then said Sunday’s event finally represented the right timing.

“My health is good,” he said. “My mental health is good. And today, I get to retire as a Met. And I want all you guys to know, you guys are part of this.”

The 2024 Mets watched from the dugout. When they took the field after what would be a 46-minute delay, Gooden threw out the ceremonial first pitch — a strike — to his 11-year-old grandson, Caden.

Francisco Lindor said before the Mets’ 2-1 win, “I’m sure people might have some tears . . . It’s going to bring out a lot of memories to people that came and watched him, probably people that came and watched him with their parents.”

Gooden, too, shed some tears remembering his late parents, Dan and Ella Mae, on his big day.

The only time he choked up when speaking to reporters or during the ceremony itself was when he recalled his parents watching in the stands in Houston as he made his first major-league appearance, 40 years and one week earlier.

“It was my dad’s dream at first that became my dream,” Gooden said. “Just to see the joy, more so on my dad’s face, meant everything to me.”

Gooden’s nephew, former slugger Gary Sheffield, said, “To me, this is more for my granddad because of the things he instilled in us at a young age . . . He spoke it into existence. He knew this day would come for Doc.”

Sheffield said of Gooden, “At his best, he was the greatest pitcher who ever lived.”

Gooden said that when Mets owner Steve Cohen first called him last year proposing the number retirement, he thought it was a prank by a former teammate.

“It’s definitely a dream come true,” he said. “It’s something that I never thought would possibly happen.”

Gooden thanked fans and teammates for sticking with him through it all.

“When [fans] show you support that way, that’s where the real connection comes in, and that’s what means a lot to me,” he said.

Said Wilson: “We were there through the good and the bad, because we love him that much, and we love each other that much.”
