Throughout my A-Levels , I have particularly enjoyed discovering how the sciences interconnect and build upon one another. Studying Chemical Engineering at university will allow me to apply my lifelong passion for understanding how things function to solve real-world problems and make a positive impact on society.

Chemistry has been one of my favourite A-level subjects because it provides mathematical insights into the unseen world of atoms and molecules. I was intrigued to learn about the Born-Haber cycle and how to calculate lattice energies based on the attractive forces between ions. It amazes me that such complex molecular interactions can be represented through simple mathematical relationships I already understand from Maths and Physics. I find great satisfaction in methodically working through problems, which will serve me well as an engineer.

My interest in Chemical Engineering stems largely from growing up in polluted urban India. One notable alumnus from the course of Chemical Engineering is Dr. Robert Langer, a professor at MIT and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Langer has made significant contributions to the field of chemical engineering, including the development of biodegradable polymers, the design of drug delivery systems, and the development of tissue engineering. He has received numerous awards, including the National Medal of Technology and Innovation and the Charles Stark Draper Prize.

The Chemical Engineering Alumni Network at MIT provides alumni with opportunities to stay connected, network, and share career advice. Chemical Engineering Personal Statement Example

Sample statement.

From an early age I was interested in the science subjects and Mathematics. This was reflected in my academic achievements as I excelled in all three science subjects, Maths, and Design Technology.

I chose to study Chemistry, Biology, and Physics at GCSE and then took Chemistry and Physics on to A Level along with Maths and Further Maths. Having the opportunity to study these subjects confirmed my interest in the challenges of applying scientific theories to real life problems.

One area of Chemical Engineering that I am particularly interested in is nuclear power and the issues that arise with this technology, for example how to dispose of nuclear waste safely.

As well as achieving the required academic qualifications I have always tried to gain as much practical experience as I can. One opportunity that I had to improve my practical skills was during the week long REACT Engineering seminar held in July.

Working in a team we were able to apply our knowledge to a real life situation by completing an exercise based on a standard decommissioning project. This experience helped me to improve my understanding and skills in areas such as team work, time management, visual and oral presentation, and report writing.

Over the summer I hope to further these skills by taking part in e-learning courses run by IChemE that will develop my presentation skills and understanding of project management techniques.

Outside of my academic life I am a keen sportsperson as a regular runner and swimmer. Currently I am working towards my first half marathon and I hope to complete the London Marathon within the next two years.

I am also undertaking the work needed to achieve my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. I am thoroughly enjoying both the expedition aspect of the scheme and the volunteering opportunities.

I look forward to the new challenges that a degree in Chemical Engineering will bring and the broad range of career paths I will have open to me after graduation. The chance to contribute to society is a particularly appealing aspect of the course.

We are sorry to share the sad news that Joseph Cerny , beloved colleague and Professor of the Graduate School at the College of Chemistry, has passed away at the age of 87.

Professor Cerny received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Mississippi in 1957, and during 1957-58 attended the University of Manchester, England on a Fulbright Scholarship. He earned his Ph.D. in nuclear chemistry from UC Berkeley in 1961 and began work as an assistant professor at the university, simultaneously joining the Nuclear Science Division (then the Nuclear Chemistry Division) at Lawrence Berkeley Lab (then the Radiation Laboratory, or Rad Lab).

Professor Cerny had a distinguished career in science and university administration. He and his colleagues discovered a new type of radioactive decay— the direct two proton emission – and expanded research at Lawrence Berkeley Lab. At Berkeley, he served as chair of the chemistry department, focusing on supporting graduate students and research quality, serving as Dean of the Graduate Division and Vice Chancellor for Research, and leading groundbreaking studies on student career outcomes. Additionally, he developed innovative research methods using particle accelerators. Over his career, Professor Cerny received many honors and awards for his achievements, including the Berkeley Citation in 2013, but they do not provide a complete picture of the various personal and professional contributions he has made to our community.

He retired in 2013 after more than half a century of research and leadership at Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley. Please join me in honoring this distinguished colleague. He will be greatly missed.

Fall Admission

  • October 1:  Full consideration

Admissions Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree in engineering or a related technical field, such as math, physics, behavioral sciences or health sciences. Appropriate academic background varies by graduate specialization.
  • A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) for all undergraduate work undertaken during the last two years of the applicant's studies. 
  • GRE scores are optional for both MS and ME program admissions.
  • We will also consider demonstrated practical engineering experience and demonstrated leadership skills

In addition to the above requirements, each entering student is expected to be skilled in a number of specific areas. Proficiency is required in mathematics through the level of multivariate calculus, probability and statistics considered from a calculus point of view, and computer programming. These requirements must be satisfied prior to admission. Students whose backgrounds have not adequately prepared them to enter the graduate curriculum directly may be asked to take appropriate undergraduate courses. Credit for these courses will not be applied toward the minimum number of hours required for the MS/ME degrees. In exceptional cases, the department may admit an applicant who does not meet all these requirements; in such cases, the department will set special performance criteria for continuing in the program.

All domestic and international students must apply online for the MS/ME programs.

Application Fee

A non-refundable application fee of $85 must be submitted for each graduate application before it will be reviewed. You can pay the application fee in your Application Status Portal via credit card. The link to pay your application fee will appear shortly after you submit your application. If you have an issue with your application fee, please contact [email protected] .

We do not offer application fee waivers for our programs. Only US Military/Veterans and their spouses and participants in special programs such as Americorps, McNair Scholars, EOP, HEOP, SEEK, or Project 1000 are eligible for an application fee waiver. Program participants must also be a US citizen or permanent resident. There are no exceptions. If you are eligible and requesting a waiver, please contact [email protected] with documentation of your military service or program participation.

Materials Checklist

Personal statement.

Your application package must include a brief statement of purpose describing your background and your academic and career goals. The Personal Statement can be typed into the space provided on the application or uploaded electronically to the application.

Transcripts

Unofficial copies of transcripts are to be uploaded to your online application. Official transcripts are not required at the time the application is submitted. If an applicant is accepted and decides to attend our program, official transcripts will be requested at that time.

Letters of Recommendation

Recommendation letters are  not required  for MS/ME applicants and are recommended only for students who do not have an undergraduate engineering degree or other exceptional circumstances.

While we will accept letters from professional sources, we strongly prefer three letters of recommendation from professors who are acquainted with your academic interests, achievements and abilities.

Requests for letters of recommendation will be emailed to your recommenders upon submitting your application form. Recommenders can submit their recommendations online. Once submitted, they are automatically uploaded to your online application.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

GRE scores are optional for MS and ME program admissions. Please note: the GRE may be required for some scholarship/fellowships.

English Language Proficiency

International applicants are required to provide proof of English proficiency. The exam results must be dated within two years from your proposed date of admission and remain valid upon entering the term for which you applied. The University at Buffalo has a minimum TOEFL score requirement of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based). On IELTS, UB requires an overall score of 6.5.

Sending ETS Scores Please send your GRE or TOEFL results to the University at Buffalo electronically from ETS by using institution code 2925 (no department codes necessary)

Information and arrangements to take the GRE and TOEFL exams can be made by contacting the Educational Testing Service (ETS) . It is strongly recommended to make test arrangements early in the year so sufficient time can be allowed for the results to be reported before our application deadline.

International Student Financial Form

All international applicants must submit a completed financial form. Answer all questions thoroughly. An I-20 cannot be issued without this form and supporting documentation showing necessary funds for each year of intended study (two years for a master's program; five years for a PhD program). Financial Aid

If you are interested in financial aid in the form of a teaching assistantship or research assistantship, please check the appropriate box on your application form. Chemical engineering personal statement example 14.

Professor Elnashaie states, in Nanotechnology for Chemical Engineers, that the fundamental principles of nanoparticles are directly synergistic with the intricate world of chemical engineering.

My desire to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering originates from my appreciation of the significant work done by chemical engineers in implementing the practical applications of nanotechnology and translating this Nano-work into the fields shaping the world - the sciences, Computer Science, and even Economics.

My knowledge on the structure of nanoparticles significantly increased through courses taken in my A-Levels. Carbon nanotubes in particular fascinated me, especially how Graphene could support a cat weighing four kilograms while it itself would be only as heavy as the cat’s whisker.

This property of Graphene has made it a suitable replacement of aluminum in aircrafts - cutting down costs and making the aircraft stronger at the same time.

However, the school curriculum alone was unable to satiate my curiosity on the advancements of nanotechnology. I soon found myself immersed in the ‘Chemical World’ published by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Rummaging through magazines like this and ChemMatters has inspired me as the breakthroughs of various scientists further cements my passion for Chemical Engineering and conducting relevant research on graphene to shape future industries, given their potential use in space technology. My latest obsession is now with the recent development of endohedral fullerenes.

Though in its experimental phase, the possible applications of endohedral fullerene are truly remarkable. I was greatly intrigued by its application in creating the most accurate GPS tracking system with an accuracy of up to one millimeter - this could revolutionise the driverless car technology by avoiding collisions of cars in the near future.

Working as an intern at Honda Atlas has also enabled me to fully comprehend the theoretical integration of endohedral fullerenes in to the GPS of cars.

Interning in the Research Department of Shaukat Khanum Cancer and Research Hospital, I was also able to explore the effects of nanoparticle-resembling LSD cholesterol against cancer cells under the tutelage of renowned surgeon Zulqarnain Chaudhry.

By participating in these two diverse professions has enabled me to discern between industrial and medical uses of nanotechnology. Moreover handling laboratory work has given me experience for the future endeavors I will face in this field.

My zest for Mathematics has also made Chemical Engineering an ideal degree for me to pursue. A strong aptitude in Mathematics enables me to devise a systematical solution to any complication I face. Other subjects I have taken in my A-Levels are Biology and Physics which complement my choice of degree.

Studying Biotechnology in my A-Level course has laid the foundations in finding economically efficient ways to making products on a large scale. While performing experiments to test out different scenarios in Physics equips me with essential traits in recognising multiple approaches to a single problem.

Outside academics, I have also been involved in various science competitions like Tesla Trials where I had to incorporate my practical skills with my knowledge of Physical Chemistry and Thermodynamics to create a mini-powered steam engine in limited timespan.

I relish these competitions where I can express my thoughts into actions and practically test skills I have picked up in and out of the class. I am also the ambassador of the AISIEC-Youth Forum to my school, assisting me in polishing my communication skills with people around me.

The capability of converting theories into reality is the emblematic characteristic of a chemical engineer I am eager to find inside me. I am an individual possessing high ambitions and it is my firm belief that the unparalleled standard set by UK universities is an excellent platform for me to achieve the goals I have set for myself.
