A graphic essay (sometimes called a visual essay) uses a combination of text and images to explore a specific topic. Graphic essays can look like comics, graphic novels, magazines, collages, artist books, textbooks, or even websites. Graphic essays often first take the form of written essays and then have graphic elements added to enrich the reader experience. Unlike infographics, which also combine text and images, graphic essays are often more text-based and usually have a narrative arc or specific reading order.

Comics are a genre used to express ideas through images combined with text or other visual information. Comics can take the form of a single panel or a series of juxtaposed panels of images, sometimes called a strip. Text is conveyed via captions below the panel(s), or speech bubbles and onomatopoeias within the panel(s), to indicate dialogue, narration, sound effects, or other information. Graphic novels are often considered to be a longer form of comics, typically in book form.

Problem statement.

For many people, comic books are just funny books read for fun. Some people even refer to comic art as a "traditionally low genre". As a matter of fact, very few people have realized the impact that this kind of fun and "traditionally low genre" literature can have in our society. In this research paper I look at the work of one of the most highly acclaimed comic artist - Art Spiegelman- and the impact that his work has had on communicating the serious themes of racism and alienation in society.

Comic books or comic artwork refers to magazines or pieces of art that contain cartoons or drawings that tell a narrative story. In such artwork, dialogue is incorporate in the artwork to help the reader to understand what is going on. This is done through the use of dialogue bubbles or captions. Descriptions of places and time are also done using words if they cannot be incorporated in the drawings. Like other continuous prose approaches to literature, comic works are divided in scenes and chapters.

Comics (as they are known in short) are used to tell a story and such a light approach to storytelling can have a profound impact on society. Many modern day writers and artists have employed the funny, entertaining and light-hearted approach that comic art tends to introduce as a form of literature to inform, educate and warn society on some of the difficult and serious issues like racism, political conflict and sexual harassment

This is the kind of communication that would have taken other genres of literature volumes and volumes of continuous prose to communicate. But still, many do not seem to appreciate the impact that this kind of literature can have in society.

A study of the work of Art Spiegelman

Art Spiegelman is an acclaimed and award winning comic artist, having written, edited and drawn many works of art related to comic art. However, Art Spiegelman is best known for his Pulitzer Prize winning comic work titled Maus (referring to the German word for mouse). In this biographical comic novel of his Polish Jewish father Vladek Spiegelman; Art Spiegelman depicts the German's as cats, the Jews as mice and the poles as pigs.

Art Spiegelman uses Maus to tell the story of his father, a survivor of the holocaust using interviews which are depicted in the form of comic art. In the comic, Art interviews his father over the years and his father tells him how the German policy changed in 1931 causing his well to do comfortable family to suffer in the hands of the Germans.

Comic art allows Art Spiegelman to use symbols in his book. For example, the use of the Cat to symbolize the Germans and the Mouse to symbolize the Jews clearly paints a picture of the situation of things at the time of Vladek Spiegelman. Just as the cat chases the mouse and the mouse remains afraid of the cat, the story of Vladek Spiegelman shows how the Germans were hunting and hurting the Jews and how the Jews remained in constant fear of the Germans.

In between interviews, Art Spiegelman depicts the state of life of Vladek's family, how they were well to do and how they had it all going on until the holocaust began. This kind of going back to the past to tell a story which would have been done in the form of a flashback in continuous prose is done easily in Art Spiegelman's work using comic art in different strips.

Art Spiegelman employs the use of irony in telling his father's story by depicting the fact that even after suffering in the hands of the Nazis, Vladek Spiegelman still remained racially prejudiced against people from the black community.

Art Spiegelman clarifies the absurdity of racism very easily in his comic. This he does by the fact that, even as he uses the mouse to represent the Jews, the cat to represent the Germans and other animals to represent other nationalities, races and religions, he ensures that the animals representing one particular race are all the same and look alike except for their clothes and a few other distinguishing factors. In this way Art Spiegelman seems to be leaving the reader of his comics with such questions in his mind as, "If there is nothing difference between us in the way we, the animals of the same race look, why then do we discriminate and alienate each other based on our ethnicity or other grounds?" And as far as discrimination between the races is concerned, the question in the reader's mind remains that of, " If we all look alike, why is it then that other people see us as being different?"

This depiction of all animals of the same race as being the same except for their clothes also illustrates how people create stereotypes towards certain races based on their experiences with only one person from that race. In the comic, just because one person is a pig or a bad person, the world creates stereotypes against his race and views all the other people belonging to that race as pigs, or bad people. If one person is bad then everybody in that race is bad, Art Spiegelman seems to illustrate.

The way Art Spiegelman uses different animals to represent different nationalities, races and religious can also be seen to depict the point that, being that we come from different backgrounds and different societies, it is definite that in one way or the other we really are different. However, the way Art Spiegelman uses other different kinds of animals can also mean that, inasmuch as we are all different, the bottom line remains that we are all animals. Or rather, the bottom line is that we are all still the same. We are all human beings.

The reduction of people to animals, the Germans to Cats, the Jews to Mice and the Poles to pig depicts just how the actions of the Nazis had reduced the whole world into a jungle and how degrading the whole holocaust was to the whole of the human race.

Art Spiegelman, instead of using the words of his father or his own words to tell the tale of his mother's suicide, comic art enables him to use the approach of telling a story within a story. This, Art Spiegelman does by introducing another comic book within his comic story. He calls the book Prisoner on the Hell Planet : A Case Story.  

The way Art Spiegelman ensures that the art work does not stand alone but is explained by narratives, dialogue bubbles and captions turns comic art into the fullest type of literature. His depiction of society as it still is using his comic art leaves the critically analytical reader with nothing short of amazement at the nature of the society we live in. The truth is the words of a skilled writer or orator can be used to stand alone and tell a story. Another truth is that the drawing of a skillful artist can probably tell a story better than written words. Like a picture, that drawing is worth a thousand words. But when the two come together, the picture illustrating the situation as is, and the words depicting what the people are saying, that which cannot be expressed in the skill or art, a story then becomes complete. Literature is brought to actualization through the employment of comic art. The comics by Art Spiegelman genuinely cause the reader to reconsider comic art as a form of literature.

Comic Composition in Prose Form Essay

The last summer holiday started on a promising note for John and Jane as they had a series of activities they intended to participate in as they waited to join college. The two were good friends, and they enjoyed each other’s company. Jane was a soft-spoken girl who respected everyone in school and at home. This could be attributed to the strictness of her parents. On the other hand, John was rude, and he believed that things could be easily solved through fighting.

He was a bully who bragged about how he fought three men who once attacked their family and floored every man. Students feared him at school, and he was keen to maintain this fear through made-up stories of his encounters with attackers. Of cause, he never mentioned that the only fight he had ever won in his entire life was against a boy six years younger than him.

He would not mention that he had to use a rod to disable the minor. His younger brother, who had a much smaller body structure, would often beat him, but this was a well-kept secret because they were in different schools. The two decided to visit Royal National Park in Sidney as a way of celebrating a life achievement after completing high school. Because she respected the parents, Jane decided to invite John to her home, introduce him to her parents, and seek their permission so that they could visit the park. John was delighted by the invitation, and on that day, he came to Jane’s home ready for the journey. Jane’s father was very strict, and when John arrived, he was not amused by his casual dress code. He recognized his face from a distance and called the daughter aside.

“Jane, do you mean this block-headed awkward-looking boy is the friend?” The father asked in a rather loud voice. John must have had because he took off his hat immediately.

“Father, kindly lower your voice when using such harsh words.”

“I asked you a question, is this rascal your friend?” the father was getting agitated because he had identified the face of John.

“Please father…”

Before she could continue, the father stormed into the living room where John was seated. Jane could not understand the reason behind the father’s agitation. He went and closed the door. Her younger brother James was still asleep, and the mother had gone to work.

“You think you would escape forever?” the father asked John menacingly as he advanced towards him.

Jane was worried because he knew John to be a strong violent man. His father was slender and tall, and she was convinced that if he engages John physically, he might get hurt. She could not understand. The father ordered her to go and call the younger brother. When she came with her brother, things got worse. The younger brother attacked John with blows and kicks as Jane watched in amazement. “You attacked me the other day with a rod and fled!” James yelled at John. It was very awkward for Jane to realize that the man he had trusted had attacked her younger brother, was overwhelmed and decided to use a rod against him. The ease with which James floored John was a complete irony of how John had always described himself. The father intervened and ordered John to leave the house never to be seen there again. The shame of not being able to defend himself before the lady he had cherished weighed heavily upon him, but he was determined to continue with his trip to Sydney.

He was in a somber mood all the way, feeling very lonely and dejected. Just as he entered the gates, someone called his name. He turned back and saw four of his classmates. They were also visiting the park. “I am pleased we found you here. We are afraid of snakes, but with you around…” Mary said with a broad smile on her face. This statement pleased John. It boosted his morale as he thought that there are people who still believe in him.

“Oh! You will be safe because I don’t fear animals, especially snakes.” He said in a convincing tone. “I have been to this park in the past and I have met several snakes.” He bragged. However, the truth was that he was visiting the place for the first time, and he had never encountered a snake before other than what he watched in the movies.

“We are in the right company,” said Charles “I hope we will have an interesting day”

They walked slowly into the park as they shared their life events and the plans they had for their higher learning. The stories helped John to forget the morning encounters with Jane’s family. None of the friends asked him about Jane, and this gave him relief. He continued bragging about various issues about his life after high school. A game ranger then came and issued a directive to them on the paths they should avoid while in the park.

All the dangers posed by the wild animals in this park were explained. Charles was curious about snakes. He asked the ranger to explain to them the types of snakes in the park and the dangers they pose. The ranger did this and showed them where they could watch all types of snakes in a protected area. They were also told of specific spots within the park where wild snakes were freely roaming in the bush.

The ranger explained how vicious the cobra, anaconda, and the black mamba could be. Although there was a healthcare facility near the park, the ranger noted that some snakes’ venom would kill within minutes before one could be rushed to the hospitals. John was completely shaken and he became very sensitive to his environment, especially when the ranger explained that sometimes the snakes would wander within the park even to the location that is thought to be safe.

On the other hand, the four classmates were reassured of their safety because John was around. Everybody feared him, and his presence in this group meant that they were safe, especially after telling them that he had encounters with them in the past.

As they started moving into areas they were restricted to, Charles threw a stick that was in his hand and mistakenly landed on John’s backed. All this time John was trying to imagine the dangers posed by the snake, and how death can be inevitable when bitten by one. When the stick landed on his back, he jumped up a screamed, attracting a lot of attention. Charles had to explain to him that it was just a stick. He slowly sneaked out of the park and went back home a dejected man. His pride was gone, and no one would ever believe in him.

Gail Collins: Absolutely no reason to torment public figures in such dire circumstances — unless, of course, they’re running a country. Princesses are obviously a different matter. But let’s move on: Who would you like to carp at first?

Bret: Thomas Edsall had a great essay in The Times last week noting that the Democratic Party is losing support among nonwhite voters. Although Joe Biden still leads Donald Trump by wide margins among Black and Hispanic Americans, the percentages seem to be shrinking. Biden’s lead among Hispanics has dropped from 24 points in 2020 to just six points now. What gives?

Gail: A great essay indeed. Bret, I do think you have to consider the exhaustion factor — everybody’s looking at seven to eight more months of this campaign and it’s not surprising that voters — especially younger voters — are looking for a little variety.

Bret: If Trump qualifies as “a little variety,” I wonder what counts as a lot.

Gail: Donald Trump is a terrible, terrible guy but he’s a professional entertainer. It’s a lot easier to be bored by Biden. And in part because Biden has a good record and personal character, there’s not much to debate.

Listening to late-night comics, you realize that they’re constantly joking about Biden’s age — I think for lack of anything else to make fun of. I’m betting that when we approach the fall with official nominees and elections around the corner, the real issues are going to surface. TV ads will remind people every night that Trump is basically a septuagenarian juvenile delinquent.

Am I too optimistic?

Bret: To quote the immortal line from “Airplane II ”: “Just a tad.”

To me, Edsall’s findings are further evidence that the deepest fault line in American society may not be about color but about class. Over the last few years, Democrats have become a party dominated by college-educated people, which is why you see Biden spending a lot of his political capital on issues like student-debt relief. In the meantime, Trump has successfully recast the G.O.P. as a working-class party, which helps account for his gains among Black and Hispanic voters, many of whom are on his side when it comes to issues like law and order and the rising cost of living.

Gail: Real-world-wise, the working-class party is the one that fights for a higher minimum wage, affordable child care for working mothers and protecting the right of unions to organize.

But go on ….

Bret: Well, if that were so, then the real-world working class wouldn’t be tilting in Trump’s direction. But they also care a lot about safer streets, affordable groceries, lower financing costs and better educational options for their children than failing public schools — none of which feel like they have improved under Biden. Democrats should be reaching out to those voters, not treating them as moral reprobates.

Gail: I totally agree that Trump voters should be regarded as targets for conversion, not contempt. Obviously that doesn’t mean every person who supports him is a worthy candidate for rehabilitation. For example, when you’re talking about the folks who are prepared to invest several billion dollars in Trump’s disastrous Twitter alternative, I’m leaning toward the reprobate interpretation.

Bret: I take it you’re referring to Truth Social, which in an honest world would be renamed Lies Sociopathic.

Gail: Your name wins.

Bret: This is another example of how Trump’s enemies are always doing him unwitting favors. Here was a company that until a few weeks ago was basically worthless but may now reap the former president a $3 billion windfall — apparently, it seems, because his supporters bought up the stock in a frenzy to help him pay off the $454 million judgment against him in a New York civil-suit judgment. If the judgment against him had come down, say, to 200 hours of community service cleaning out garbage cans in Central Park, it would have done a lot more to humble and hinder him.

And speaking of self-defeating efforts, can we talk about Marjorie Taylor Greene’s threat to oust Mike Johnson as House speaker?

Gail: Wouldn’t have imagined working up much sympathy for Mike Johnson but Greene’s attempt to punish him for getting a budget passed really does force you to … temporarily rethink. Johnson is facing the immediate prospect of seeing his majority drop down to one, including dozens of members who won’t vote for anything that would make the government work. So Democrats in the House have actually been talking about saving him if push comes to shove.

What do you think is going to happen?

Bret: There’s a theory in political science that parliamentary majorities become more cohesive as they get smaller, since nobody wants to be the traitor who brings the majority down. But Greene or some other member of the G.O.P.’s space laser caucus just might prove the theory wrong. For them, politics isn’t about governing. It’s about getting attention. At some psychological level, today’s Republican members probably want to be in a permanent minority, because that gives them a platform with maximum TV time and minimum political responsibility.

But hey, we’re agreeing too much. How do you feel about Texas managing its own border policy?

Gail: In the long list of bad ideas to emanate from Gov. Greg Abbott, this would be close to the top of the worst. Do we want North Dakota and Montana setting up their own immigration laws? Or New York or Michigan, for that matter?

And hey, didn’t we have a bipartisan plan to deal with the border and immigration issue? Which Trump demanded the Republicans kill so he could keep yammering about the “animals” trying to cross the border.

Do you agree with me about Texas? If so, if we want to fight, we’re gonna have to go back to early childhood education or Biden’s college loan forgiveness.

Bret: Well … sorta. On the constitutional question, there’s no doubt that this is a federal responsibility and Texas is traveling down a states’ rights road that can’t have a good outcome.

But the politics of this is a different story. Abbott’s hard-line policies are one of the reasons migrants have been deterred from coming through Texas over the past months. Democrats can blame Republicans all they want for not passing the bipartisan deal — and they have a point. But most Americans also understand that Biden and Kamala Harris pretty much ignored the crisis for years until Abbott and other Southern governors started sending migrants to places like Chicago and New York, and Democratic officials began to see the problem at their doorstep. If Biden loses in November, this will be a major reason.

Gail: The border states had to wrestle with the migrant issue for ages before the federal government did much to help them out. Terrible burden on some Texas cities but providing labor that was a great benefit to large chunks of the economy.

Bret: Then again, if Trump loses, it might be because he insists on calling the people who assaulted the Capitol on Jan. 6 “hostages” and “unbelievable patriots .” That strikes me not just as awful but also politically crazy. Is there any method to the madness?

Gail: As I’ve pointed out a time or two, he’s a professional reality show entertainer who instinctively says something he thinks will draw attention — whether it’s true or false, good for the country or terrible. The method is in his poll numbers, but I truly, truly believe that when the public has to go deep and focus this fall, they’ll reject him.

Bret: He definitely has a genius for baiting his critics. I also think he means it when it comes to Jan. 6, which is why it’s so important that he lose the election.

I just wish the Biden team hadn’t done so much to facilitate his comeback. When the history of this administration is written, I think it will note that Biden’s biggest mistake was to tack to the left instead of the center on immigration and the economy, to use the Justice Department to go after Trump and to denounce “ MAGA Republicans ” as if they were enemies of the state. Much better would have been to never even mention “the former guy” and to have nominated Kamala Harris to the Supreme Court after Stephen Breyer announced his retirement.

But hey: We can always pray Americans will come to their senses.

Gail: Well, pleased to say I currently have more faith in our fellow Americans than you do. But let’s talk about elections — people are starting to focus on Congress. Both of us are rooting for a Democrat, Sherrod Brown, to keep his Senate seat in Ohio, right?

Still, I wasn’t too crazy about the fact that some Brown backers were rooting for — and even financially supporting — the current Republican nominee because he seems too far to the right, even for Ohio. Never did like the idea of pursuing political goals by helping make the other side worse.

Bret: Exactly. And Brown — who is decent, smart, honest and funny, even if his politics are well to my left — is the kind of Democrat I want in the Senate; his opponent, Bernie Moreno, is the kind of Republican I don’t. I’d rather disagree with an honorable opponent than agree with a dishonorable one.
