It is nice seeing new things, meeting new people and visiting places. The surprise in both of these topics is that they are the good things that every person would wish to have. My father had been out of the country for six months, and coincidentally he was to report home on the eve of my 25th birthday. As I woke up that morning, I knew it was a big day for me. Essay on My Best Gift

Students are often asked to write an essay on My Best Gift in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on My Best Gift

Introduction.

The joy of receiving gifts is immeasurable. Among all the gifts I have received, one stands out as the best.

The Best Gift

My best gift was a book, gifted by my grandmother on my 10th birthday. It wasn’t just any book, but a collection of inspiring stories.

Why It’s Special

This book is special because it ignited my love for reading. Each story taught me valuable lessons about life.

The best gifts aren’t always the most expensive ones. They are those that leave a lasting impact on our lives, just like my book.

250 Words Essay on My Best Gift

Gifts hold a unique place in our lives, often serving as markers of significant moments or relationships. The best gifts are not necessarily the most expensive, but those that carry profound emotional value. For me, the best gift I’ve ever received is a small, worn-out notebook from my grandmother, a gift that has shaped my life in unimaginable ways.

The Gift’s Significance

The notebook, filled with my grandmother’s handwritten recipes, is more than just a collection of dishes. It is a testament to her love for cooking and a symbol of her desire to pass on the family’s culinary heritage. She had spent years perfecting those recipes, and her gift was a way of entrusting me with a piece of our family’s history.

Impact of the Gift

The notebook has significantly influenced my life. It sparked a passion for cooking that I was previously unaware of. I found joy in replicating the recipes, each dish bringing me closer to my roots and instilling a sense of connection to my family. The notebook also taught me the value of preserving traditions and the importance of sharing them with future generations.

In conclusion, the best gift I’ve ever received is not valuable in monetary terms, but it is priceless in its emotional significance. It represents a tangible link to my family’s past and a guide for preserving our traditions. It is a gift that has shaped my interests, values, and identity. The notebook from my grandmother is not just a collection of recipes; it is a cherished keepsake, a source of inspiration, and undoubtedly, my best gift.

500 Words Essay on My Best Gift

Gifts are a universal way to express emotions such as love, appreciation, and gratitude. Throughout our lives, we receive various gifts, but some hold a special place in our hearts. The best gift I ever received was not wrapped in shiny paper or tied with a colorful ribbon, but was a profound life experience that forever changed my perspective.

The Unexpected Gift

The best gift I ever received was a two-week trip to a remote village in Africa, a gift from my parents on my eighteenth birthday. Initially, I was perplexed, even disappointed. I had expected a car, a gadget, or a lavish party, but instead, I was given an experience that seemed unexciting. Little did I know, this trip would be the most valuable gift I’d ever receive.

Experiencing a Different World

In the remote village, I was exposed to a world far removed from the comforts of my urban life. The villagers lived in humble huts, tilled their fields manually, fetched water from wells, and cooked on open fires. There were no shopping malls, no internet, and no fast food. Initially, it was a culture shock. But as the days passed, I began to understand the essence of their lifestyle.

Lessons from Simplicity

The villagers taught me the beauty of simplicity. They found joy in the simplest things – a good harvest, a community gathering, a starlit sky. They were content with what they had, and they shared generously. Their sense of community was profound; they worked together, celebrated together, and supported each other in times of need. The happiness and contentment they derived from their simple lives were eye-opening.

Valuing What Matters

This experience taught me to value relationships and experiences over material possessions. I realized that the relentless pursuit of material wealth often leads to stress and discontentment. On the other hand, the villagers, with their simple lives and strong community bonds, seemed happier and more content. This realization was a paradigm shift for me, making me reconsider what I truly valued in life.

In retrospect, the trip to the African village was the best gift I ever received. It was not a material possession that would lose its value over time, but an experience that enriched my life and broadened my perspective. It taught me the importance of simplicity, contentment, and community – lessons that continue to shape my life. This gift from my parents was indeed a profound life experience, a gift that keeps on giving.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Essays About Dads: Top 5 Examples Plus 10 Prompts

Write engaging essays about dads with help from our essay examples about dads, including a handful of topic prompts.

Dads are critical pillars in children’s development. Like moms, their presence, especially in children’s early years, is critical in laying the foundation of their well-being and self-esteem that will determine much of their kids’ adulthood. Some people have great relationships with their dads, while others have complicated or strained relationships, or don’t have contact with them at all.

Being a dad is different from merely being a father in that the former has nurtured a more loving relationship with their kids. Becoming a father is a huge milestone in a person’s life. The child can enjoy their dad’s great sense of humor, fun attitude in life, and loving personality. Whatever your relationship with your dad, you can write a compelling essay to convey your experiences and share your emotions.

5 Essay Examples

1. 10 lessons i learned from my abusive father by suzanna quintana, 2. why some fathers become distant after their child becomes a teen by larissa marulli, 3. gay dads and stigmas by laura ferguson, 4. this veterans day, i’m searching for my dad’s army buddies before it’s too late by judi ketteler, 5. i have never met my dad – making peace with the past by james barnett, 1. my dad is my best friend, 2. spending time with dad, 3. the best lesson i learned from my dad, 4. modern roles of dads, 5. absent dads: a social crisis, 6. single dads on the rise, 7. dads’ rights and obligations in child custody, 8. what makes a responsible dad, 9. my dad: the disciplinarian, 10. becoming a dad.

“Between his rages, verbal abuse, emotional absence, and his way of using guilt and shame as a weapon, the rest of us were kept under control through what I later dubbed Operation Fear, his cold war campaign designed to silence all dissidents and maintain his place as a dictator.”

The author relates her struggles of breaking free from her father’s encumbering sense of being unloved. Although her struggle lasted into her late adult years, she eventually learned to accept and cherish lessons from her father that helped her become a better parent to her children. You might be interested in these essays about growing up without a father .

“Dad can have a really hard time getting used to his little girl now being a young woman who has romantic interests, and breasts and may no longer be into the things that she and dad used to do together.”

The love of dads has a lasting impact on a child’s disposition and outlook in adulthood. The problem is that some dads tend to be distant once their kids’ transition into teenagers. This essay helps dads preserve their closeness with their children during confusing times.

“…[G]ay fathers still feel the brunt of stigma, experiences that the researchers linked to states with fewer legal and social protections for gays and their families.”

Years after the legal acceptance of gay marriages, gay dads still endure discrimination. A research study uncovers this and studies influences that continue to perpetuate the discriminating environment.

“It was only in 2019 that my sisters and I discovered all the photographs our dad had taken of his fellow GIs — reading, drinking beer at cafés and tending to their military truck. Some are portraits. Some seem candid. All feel special.”

In this essay, book author Ketteler talks about her nostalgic adventure to learn more about her veteran father’s life at the barracks. This journey starts after uncovering old photos of his wartime memorabilia wrapped with mystery and brotherly love.

“If, for whatever variety of reasons, a dad isn’t present, physically or otherwise, then the child must look elsewhere for role models. I see being a role model as part of my life purpose. I need to be the role model that my dad wasn’t there to be for me. I must be what I didn’t have.”

A son who never had someone to call dad pens a letter to his deceased stranger-father. In this letter-essay, he puts out all the difficulties in meeting him only through pictures and never knowing how his life was. Yet, despite the letter appearing as an outpour of outrage, a surprising twist comes up when the essay shifts into a forgiving tone.

10 Compelling Prompts On Essays About Dads

Describe the best side of your father and share with your readers how he fits as your best friend. Talk about the things you like doing together and how he listens to you in times of need. Perhaps you enjoy watching movies together or going on annual trips away together. What are the other things that make you appreciate your father? Answer this question in the main section of your essay. End your essay with a conclusion explaining how a parent and a child can have true bonds of friendship.

Essays About Dads: Spending time with dad

Do you and your dad enjoy golf, camping, or hiking? Or do you prefer doing something indoors, like cooking or playing board games? First, write about the activities you and your father enjoy doing together. Then, for a more impactful essay, write about what a day of spending time with your dad looks like and your fondest memory with him.

Like our essay example, we hope you also have important lessons to carry on from your dad, whether by having a loving or complicated relationship with him. Write down the most important lesson your dad has imparted to you. You may have learned essential life skills like cooking or cleaning, self-confidence, or how to be independent. Detail how the lessons you have learned have shaped your perspective in life and what you are striving to do to embody his teachings into your life.

Diverging from the traditional perception of fathers as mainly financial providers, the modern definition of a dad comes in different shapes and sizes. First, enumerate the typical dads existing today — single dads, gay dads, blended households, step dads, and more. Then, find out how they are raising their children and how different are their parenting styles from those of traditional dads. Include interview research in your essay for an interesting and accurate essay.

According to the National Fatherhood Initiative , one in four children is without a biological, step, or adoptive father. In this essay, enumerate the adverse effects of fatherlessness on a child’s development. How do these effects influence one’s adulthood? Find research studies to support your answer to this.

Research from the Pew Research Center has shown that single dads have increased ninefold since the 1960s. Research this trend further and discover what factors drive single men to take on the enormous responsibility of fatherhood on their own. If you know dads who are single fathers by choice, their stories would add more life to your story. Also, tackle the options men have to be single dads, such as surrogacy or adoption, and assistance your state or country offers aspiring single dads.

According to the World Population Review , about 50% of married couples divorce. When marriages fail, what rights do fathers hold to continue being a father to their children? Find out what these are, along with a father’s obligations and penalties for not fulfilling them. Turn this into an argumentative essay and answer whether these rights and obligations are enough and how they can be expanded to sustain raising a child.

As modern times drastically change the roles of parents, dads have become more involved in child-rearing. This has allowed dads to nurture more profound relationships with their kids, breaking the image of a distant father who only gets to see his child after work. First, write about the qualities and actions that make a father a responsible dad. Then, add the importance of having responsible dads at home and what society can do to promote responsible fatherhood.

Essays About Dads: My dad the disciplinarian

The image of dads as a disciplinarian has often been perceived negatively. But beyond the punishments, discipline means enabling children to grow up well. In this essay, talk about your dad’s disciplinary techniques. Write about how he corrects bad behavior. Then, cite anecdotes to make your essay more lively. For example, share how your dad responded to a grave mistake you committed. Finally, write down how he punished you and what you learned from this experience.

Interview your father and try to capture his roller coaster of emotions and experiences as a first-time dad. Ask him what he felt like when he first held you in your arms, when you got your first fever and when he first brought you to school. Next, ask him how he is coping with the extraordinary demands of fatherhood financially, physically, and emotionally. Finally, ask him to give soon-to-be fathers a few words of wisdom. Share these experiences in your essay and describe your take on these emotions.

The 41 Best Gifts for Dads

A selection of the best gifts for days, including a record, notebooks, an L.L. Bean hat, and a white t-shirt.

By Samantha Schoech and Mari Uyehara

Whether you’re celebrating your dad, your granddad, or another important father figure in your life, it can be hard to find just the right gift. (And it doesn’t help matters that every time you press for clues, he insists that he doesn’t need anything.) We’ve taken the guesswork out of the process. Below, we’ve gathered our favorite gifts to impress or delight any dad on your list—with nary a striped tie in sight. This list includes a wide range of great gift options, so you’re sure to find something to delight your favorite dad on a birthday, a holiday, or any other day you want to show your appreciation.

Chill sunglasses

The best Wayfarer-style sunglasses Goodr The OGs, shown on an orange background.

Goodr The OGs

These sturdy-feeling Ray-Ban–style sunglasses are universally flattering. And they stay put, even through active workout routines.

Buying Options

Of the cheap sunglasses we tested in the Wayfarer style (those with a winged upper rim, like Ray-Bans), Goodr’s The OGs were “the most universally loved.” These comfortable, unisex shades look great on almost every face shape and size and come with a year-long warranty. And at around 25 bucks, if they get tossed into the rapids on a whitewater-rafting trip, smooshed in sand at the beach, or just plucked off your favorite dad’s dome by an eagle while he’s grilling, he won’t break a sweat over replacing them.

Dark knight

essay about buying a gift for your father

Etsfmoa Unisex Beanie with Light

This combination beanie and headlamp has a bright, rechargeable light embedded in a soft, warm hat.

(limited colors)

Whether the dad on your gift list is walking the dog after dark or jogging before dawn, the Etsfmoa Unisex Beanie with Light will keep his path well lit and keep his hands free (both of which are of critical importance on those dog walks). When staff writer Samantha Schoech brought this lightweight, acrylic hat to a white elephant exchange, a fight practically broke out over who got to take it home. The LED light, which charges in about two hours over a USB port, has three brightness settings, and the beanie comes in 24 colors and patterns.

Creative type

A Lego typewriter with a piece of paper in it.

Lego Ideas Typewriter 21327

The keys clack and the carriage moves on this mid-century-style model inspired by a typewriter used by the Lego Group’s founder.

May be out of stock

Even after the dad in your life has risen to the challenge of assembling the 2,079-piece Lego Ideas Typewriter , the fun isn’t over. Every part of this brick-built vintage replica works, from the rounded keys to the typebar and paper carriage. This smart-looking, army-green model is one our favorite Lego sets for adults , largely because of the non-repetitive building techniques it requires. Fashioned after a mid-century typewriter used by Lego Group founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen, the set also comes with a letter from his descendent and the current chairman, Thomas Kirk; superfans of the toymaker might like to feed it into the typewriter’s platen roller.

A Foothill Products Trainer Tray.

Foothill Products Trainer Tray

This handy aluminum tray has a nonslip surface to house a phone and other items between a stationary bike’s handlebars.

Come the colder months or inclement-weather days, the hardcore cyclist in your life will appreciate this tidy little accessories container for an indoor bike. The aluminum and plastic Foothill Products Trainer Tray easily and securely locks onto the trainer’s mount. And the grippy, nonslip surface will keep a phone, TV remote, and AirPods case in place even at your giftee’s most furious pace.

Dapper Crocs

essay about buying a gift for your father

Crocs Dylan Clog

This more sophisticated version of the durable, comfortable classic has a leather-like texture.

Love ’em or hate ’em, the original Crocs are undeniably comfy and sturdy—a time-tested favorite in restaurant kitchens for those very reasons. Made with the same proprietary resin, the Crocs Dylan Clog still has those practical virtues but is designed in a more suave style. The iconic bulbous shape is smoothed out, with no dramatic bump on the toe box, and the textured exterior approximates full-grain leather. If the dad on your gift list wasn’t a Crocs convert before, he will be now. Supervising editor Hannah Morrill scooped up a pair for her partner, and he hasn’t taken them off for six months.

Daddy’s little helper

A Dad Grass Something’s Fishy 5 Pack Dad Stash.

Dad Grass Something’s Fishy 5 Pack Dad Stash

These low-dose CBD joints, made with organic hemp flowers, are hidden from curious littles in a “sardines” sleeve.

The dad on your list may find nothing wrong with a little toking. But that doesn’t mean a parent wants their stash found by the kiddos. The CBD joints in the Dad Grass Something’s Fishy 5 Pack Dad Stash are hidden in a decoy “sardines” sleeve, which should keep innocent questions at bay until your giftee is ready to answer them. The prerolled joints are made with 100% US-grown, organic hemp flowers—free of additives and tobacco, and similar to marijuana but with high CBD and low THC content. The result is a mellower smoke that’s just enough to ease a day of picky-eating battles or sports chauffeuring without leaving your gift recipient completely dazed and confused.

Favorite daypack

essay about buying a gift for your father

Osprey Skarab 18

This lightweight backpack carries up to 2.5 L of water, and its magnetic hose attaches to a shoulder strap.

The dad you’re shopping for may favor either leisurely nature walks or heart-pumping summit treks, but no one likes the awkward fuss of stopping to pull a water bottle out whenever thirst strikes. If his ideal weekend plans include hitting the trails, the lightweight, nylon Osprey Skarab 18 , whose internal sleeve has a 2.5 L liquid capacity, might be just what he needs. The valve on the hose attaches to the shoulder strap via a magnet for easy sipping. This water-repellent hydration pack also features a foam back panel for comfort and an interior mesh pocket with a key clip, so he won’t be fishing around for his car keys when it’s time to come on home.

Exceptional anchovies

An opened can of anchovies on a plate next to two slices of wheat bread and a seasoned butter spread.

Fishwife Tinned Seafood Co. Cantabrian Anchovies in Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Hand-packed at Europe’s first MSC-certified fishery, in Cantabria, Spain, these melt-in-your-mouth anchovies are perfect whether added to recipes or eaten right out of the tin.

If your dad is a fan of tasty little fishes, the Cantabrian Anchovies in Extra Virgin Olive Oil from the woman-owned and sustainably run Fishwife Tinned Seafood Co. should be on his radar. Salty yet not overly so, and perfectly textured between firm and silky, these anchovies are delicious on pizza and even better eaten right out of the tin. Staff writer Samantha Schoech has been a member of an anchovy-cooking club for over a decade, and these are her favorite to eat plain, along with good bread and butter.

Scratch-off for cinephiles

A person using a penny to scratch a stamp from the Pop-Chart 100 Essential Films Scratch-Off Chart.

Pop Chart 100 Essential Films Scratch-Off Chart

This scratch-off chart provides a list of must-watch films from 1916 to 2017. It’s the perfect gift for a cinephile.

One part bragging board, one part movie-night idea generator, Pop Chart’s 100 Essential Films Scratch-Off Chart features 100 must-watch movies, each concealed under a simple gray design. Once the dad on your list watches a movie, he can scrape off the wax to reveal a full-color mini movie poster. The list spans 100 years, beginning with 1916’s Intolerance and finishing with 2017’s Ladybird. If your giftee has passions other than film, Pop Chart makes similar posters related to major-league ballparks and novels , among other worthy interests.

General admission

A football stadium lit up with performance lights and crowds of people filling the stands.

Ticketmaster Gift Card

Ticketmaster’s gift cards come in increments of $25, and they can be redeemed for almost any coveted event, from a baseball game to a Bruce Springsteen show.

If your favorite dad doesn’t want any more stuff, give him the gift of a cherished experience. Despite this year’s unsavory news about Ticketmaster , it’s still the place that music and sports lovers go if they want to see big acts. The gift card amount is up to you, of course, but be aware that large tours don’t come cheap. Luckily, plenty of sporting events and tickets for smaller acts start around $30 before fees. You’ll score bonus points with your giftee if you get yourself a ticket to accompany him.

Superior shorts

essay about buying a gift for your father

Adidas Own the Run Shorts

With a 5-inch, 7-inch, or 9-inch inseam, these lightweight running shorts work for nearly any pastime. They also have a small zippered pocket, a built-in brief, and reflective stripes.

He of the ratty old gym shorts could surely use a new pair. Featuring three inseam options, breathable fabric, a zippered hip pocket, and a supportive, nonrestrictive built-in brief, Adidas’s Own the Run Shorts are the platonic ideal of the form. Plus, if your dad likes to run after dark, the reflective stripes will keep him safer.

Muscle massage

The triangular, yet round Therabody Theragun Prime.

Therabody Theragun Prime

This massage gun offers powerful percussion in a compact package, with a triangular, multigrip handle.

As people get older, aches and pains seem to crop up more frequently. Help the dad on your list keep everything loose with our favorite massage gun . The triangular handle on the Therabody Theragun Prime lets the operator change the grip and angle for better leverage and pressure. This model offers five speeds, 30 pounds of force, and four head attachments. The app can learn from your dad’s activity, and it can suggest and demonstrate different massage techniques, as well as exercise ideas for what ails him.

Light bright

Our pick for the best flashlight, the ThruNite Archer 2A V3 with its light shining.

ThruNite Archer 2A V3

This flashlight has a wide range of brightness settings, a two-button interface, and an overall pleasant design.

All dads need a flashlight (or four), even if they don’t plan on exploring the great outdoors after dark. The battery-powered, compact ThruNite Archer 2A V3 flashlight is our top pick , and the dad you’re shopping for will appreciate it whether he’s camping or maneuvering his way around the house when the electricity goes out. Our testers liked this model’s two-beam design and its different brightness options (which your giftee can click through one-handed). This flashlight is water resistant, designed not to roll off flat surfaces, and capable of surviving a 1-meter drop. Bonus: It’s small enough to stash in a glove box or junk drawer—perfect for power outages.

Better barbells

Our pick for best adjustable dumbbell, the Core Home Fitness Adjustable Dumbbell Set.

Core Home Fitness Adjustable Dumbbell Set

With their speedy adjustments and ergonomic design, these weights are easier to use and more comfortable to hold than any others we’ve tried.

The Core Home Fitness Adjustable Dumbbell Set is our pick because these weights are easy to adjust and comfortable to hold. And, frankly, they’re just cooler than the Rocky -era barbell that your dad may swear he’ll use again one of these days. With a twist of the handles, each dumbbell can go from 5 pounds to 50 pounds in a matter of seconds. But what our testers especially liked was that these weights, at 14.5 inches long, are a manageable length when fully loaded, and they get shorter—and therefore more ergonomic to handle—as you reduce the load.

Sentimental star map

A cat underneath The Night Sky Museum Grade Print.

The Night Sky Museum Grade Print

These personalized art prints depict how the cosmos looked at a specific moment in time—for example, the day of a birth.

A snapshot of the cosmos from a customized time and place, The Night Sky’s Museum Grade Print would make a special gift for the dad in your life, whether you decide to use the date and time of his birth or to highlight another pivotal event in his life (such as the date of your birth). Printed on museum-quality paper or stretched canvas with fade-resistant archival ink, the image is available in three sizes and several colors, plus a glow-in-the-dark option. It also includes the date and the location coordinates, along with a personalized event name. This token is sweet and simple, and it will look great hanging on a wall.

Sneakerhead score

Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 sneakers.

Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66

These slender sneakers are exceedingly soft and have a sporty flair. They’re some of the most comfortable shoes straight out of the box.

Most patriarchs could use more-stylish footwear. The dad on your list is likely to love walking around in these sharp white sneakers , one of our favorite pairs from our testing. The slender Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 shoes are especially soft and flexible, with suede accents that lend a sporty flair. In our tests, the Onitsuka sneakers were also the most comfortable leather shoes straight out of the box, with thinner leather than that of many other sneakers, so the break-in time was minimal.

Hasami Porcelain Mugs can be gifted singly, as shown on the right, or as a stackable set, as shown on the left.

Hasami Gloss Gray Mug

These porcelain mugs are produced by a 400-year-old Japanese ceramics company. They nest for easy storage, and they come in a range of colors that all go well together.

Mugs from Hasami —a centuries-old Japanese ceramics company—are gorgeous porcelain pieces. And no matter what size or color you buy, together they always look like a set. These mugs are stackable, so they look great displayed on shelves, and they come in three color options. We’re confident they’ll become your dad’s new go-to vessel for coffee or tea.

A more-pliant pillow

The Nest Bedding Easy Breather Pillow, shown on a bed.

Nest Bedding Easy Breather Pillow

This pillow has a customizable and washable filling that offers firm support for back- and side-sleepers. What it doesn’t have: the lingering chemical smell we’ve noticed in some other shredded-foam pillows.

When was the last time your dad bought himself a new pillow? Was it when you got sick on his bed after eating too much Halloween candy in the third grade? If so, it’s time he got an upgrade. A pillow might not be the most glamorous gift, but we’ve found shredded-foam pillows —including the Nest Bedding Easy Breather Pillow —to be life-altering, both in comfort and in their impact on sleep quality. This is the ultimate practical present that your dad may not know he needs.

Wildlife watcher

The Wildgame Innovations Terra Extreme 2.0 trail camera attached to a tree in a forest.

Wildgame Innovations Terra Extreme 2.0

This trail camera packs lots of pixels into a small package. It also has a lightning-fast trigger speed, so you can capture crisp images of wildlife, day or night.

Whether the dad you’re shopping for is a hunter, a nature observer, or just someone who wants to know what goes bump in the night, an inexpensive trail camera is a surprisingly effective tool for capturing clear images and videos of wildlife. We’ve been recommending cameras from Wildgame Innovations for years, and we’re currently in the process of fully updating our guide to reflect our affection for the updated model, the Wildgame Innovations Terra Extreme 2.0 . It retains the good stuff (720p video resolution, a quick-fire flash to 60 feet, and a straightforward interface to get it up and running quickly), and it adds some small changes to the setup menu and switches. This model is great for beginners. Just be sure to include eight AA batteries.

Dead tech, deconstructed

essay about buying a gift for your father

Grid Game Boy Pocket

This company disassembles and mounts outdated tech gear (phones, gaming consoles, computer chips) in pristine condition to make nerd-nostalgic wall art.

If your dad is fascinated by how things work, Grid takes apart old cell phones, gaming consoles, and watches and then fashions them into works of art, with each part labeled and arranged like a little tech map. The Grid Game Boy Pocket , made from the 1996 model, will bring him back to a time when nothing was more engaging than a session of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening in black-and-white.

A grown-up vape

The Pax 3 portable vaporizer standing alone.

Pax Plus Portable Vaporizer

A great choice for newbies and experienced cannabis users alike, this vaporizer can last several sessions, tucks neatly in a pocket, and is relatively simple to clean. We don’t love its mouthpiece or charger, though.

If your dad just needs to chill out (and if he’s open to it), consider giving him the Pax Plus . We named this model our pick for the best portable cannabis vaporizer after researching more than 50 models and testing over a dozen in the past seven years. Whether he’s completely new to cannabis or was once a casual smoker, a vaporizer is a great way for him to bypass the sticky, ashy, black mess that comes with smoking joints, pipes, or bongs. The Pax Plus also offers a cleaner taste, less lingering odor, and reduced throat irritation.

Weather watcher

essay about buying a gift for your father

Netatmo Weather Station

One of the simplest weather stations to use and install, this model works with affordable add-on modules to produce a reliable and accurate overview of local weather trends.

Dull conversationalists give weather tracking an unfair rap. But as your dad may tell you, anticipating and observing the wind, rain, sunshine, and snow is actually an exciting, rewarding, and useful pursuit. The Netatmo Weather Station is a smart upgrade that will satisfy his curiosity beyond the confines of his phone’s weather app. The base weather station measures indoor and outdoor temperature, noise levels, humidity, barometric air pressure, and air quality; separate gauges track precipitation and wind. He can also access past readings and check on conditions remotely from a smartphone, tablet, or computer, or with voice commands via an Amazon Echo speaker or Siri.

All-weather thermal

A person modeling Smartwool Men’s Classic All-Season Merino Base Layer in the color, Natural.

Smartwool Men’s Classic All-Season Merino Base Layer

Dads in cold climates might already know about this fitted (but not tight), warm (but not sweaty) wool base layer. If not, they should.

If your dad hasn’t experienced the pleasures of the Smartwool Men’s Classic All-Season Merino Base Layer , he’s in for a treat. The merino-wool and nylon blend creates a soft, breathable, non-itchy layer to keep your gift recipient cozy on a bone-chilling day. This shirt also works as an airy standalone piece on sunny days. The washer- and dryer-safe fabric holds its shape well, so your dad needn’t launder it after every use. (This piece’s supreme versatility is one of the reasons it’s been a long-standing favorite in our thermal underwear guide.) It may seem pricey for just a shirt, but that’s the thing: A few wears will convince any dad that it’s not just a shirt.

Better backpack

An olive green Troubadour Apex Backpack.

Troubadour Apex 3.0 Backpack

Handsome styling, ergonomic design, and thoughtful details make this pricey backpack worth the money.

Unless he’s a Don Draper acolyte, the dad in your life likely doesn’t carry a briefcase to work. But how about a more-modern carryall, like the Troubadour Apex 3.0 Backpack , one of our favorite laptop backpacks ? This waterproof, 90% recycled-polyester canvas bag has a sleek and stylish silhouette. But our testers especially appreciated its inner beauty, including its contoured memory-foam shoulder straps, its multiple pockets and sleeves for staying organized, and its overall quality and construction. The recently updated design also has a handy hidden pocket on the left shoulder strap.

Does-it-all driver

The MegaPro automotive screwdriver.

Megapro 13-in-1 Ratcheting Driver 211R2C36RD

This manual screwdriver combines smooth ratcheting action with excellent bit storage and a uniquely comfortable handle. It’s the most well-rounded, capable tool of its kind.

We’ve been testing screwdrivers for many years now, but none of them have worked as solidly as the Megapro 13-in-1 Ratcheting Driver 211R2C36RD . If the dad you’re thinking of spends a lot of time tinkering and making various repairs around the house, a great screwdriver is essential. Although most screwdrivers work just fine, the Megapro 13-in-1 will help your giftee work faster and expend less effort. Plus, as its name suggests, it comes with a comprehensive bit selection (six double-headed driver bits, totaling 12 bits, and the ¼-inch hex end of the stem), all conveniently nestled inside the handle—and therefore much harder to lose.

News, games, recipes, and more

The New York Times print newspaper next to a phone showing the mobile app.

The New York Times Gift Subscription

With a subscription to The New York Times, your dad will always have a crossword or sudoku puzzle to work on. It will also admit him into the addictive world of Spelling Bee and Wordle.

Wirecutter is owned by The New York Times, but even if it weren’t, we’d think an All Access subscription would make a terrific gift. For about six bucks a month, you’re giving Dad unlimited digital access to the Times’s peerless reporting, plus Games, Cooking, Audio, The Athletic, and of course, Wirecutter. He’ll never complain about being bored again.

A subtle reminder

essay about buying a gift for your father

Supergoop Play Everyday Lotion SPF 50

This chemical sunscreen formula rubs in easily and appears nearly transparent once applied. It has a light, pleasant scent and comes in four sizes, including an 18-ounce jug.

By now, the dad on your list knows he’s supposed to wear sun protection every day. But if he still pouts about the slimy feeling or the chalky look of sunscreen, a bottle of Supergoop Play Everyday Lotion SPF 50 will change his perspective. One of our absolute favorite face sunscreens since 2018, Play Everyday Lotion rubs in so smoothly and looks so transparent that your giftee will forget he’s even wearing it. But don’t let him forget to reapply it every two hours.

Transcendent waffles

Our pick for best waffle maker on a budget, the Cuisinart Round Classic Waffle Maker WMR-CAP2, shown in front of a blue background.

Cuisinart WMR-CA Round Classic Waffle Maker

This compact, consistent, and affordable waffle iron produces delicate, crispy waffles in 40 seconds flat.

Hot, fresh waffles need not be reserved for restaurant brunches and hotel buffets. With one of our favorite waffle makers , you can whip up a batch for your dad, and he’ll be ladling his own creations in no time. If your dad prefers his waffles thin and crispy, the Cuisinart Round Classic Waffle Maker WMR-CAP2 is an especially thoughtful choice. Among the 30 models we’ve tested since 2014, this one stood out because it’s easy to use, it performs consistently, and it has a compact design—it’s a little over 10 inches across, so it’s simple to store, even in smaller kitchens.

Toughest tote

A black Filson Rugged Twill Tote Bag.

Filson Rugged Twill Tote Bag

This tote bridges the gap between brawn and beauty. It’s lightweight and well constructed, and it has leather handles and an excellent warranty.

The Filson Rugged Twill Tote Bag is a great present for the dad who has gear to haul, whether it consists of coloring books, snacks, and sunscreen for an afternoon with little ones or a laptop, notebook, and headphones for work. Of the 40 totes we researched for our guide to the best tote bags , this one appealed to us with its light weight, sturdy construction, and handsome design. The Filson tote is made from water-repellent, 100% cotton twill, and the inner seams are bound to protect them from fraying. Basically, this bag is safeguarded against all of the activities that dads are wont to partake in. But if you’re still concerned, it comes with a lifetime warranty.

Pocket notebooks

essay about buying a gift for your father

Field Notes National Parks Memo Books

These pocket-sized, durable notebooks feature high-quality graph paper and come in a range of cover choices.

We love Field Notes notebooks , and the National Parks Memo Books collection—with graph-paper interiors and covers featuring 18 different national parks—is especially alluring. Depending on which three-pack of the pocket-sized memo books you pick, your giftee may be inspired by depictions of Denali National Park’s aurora, the bison of Yellowstone, or the towering trees of Sequoia National Park. (You could also buy the entire series, so you don’t have to choose.)

Collector’s album

essay about buying a gift for your father

In 1968, Thelonious Monk, one of the greatest jazz pianists ever, played a show at Palo Alto High School in California. The six arrangements, including some of his classics, were finally released in 2020.

Just before his band broke up—and at the height of racial tensions in the late 1960s—Thelonious Monk unexpectedly decided to accept a student’s request for him to play a show at California’s Palo Alto High School to help bring about racial unity in the community while raising funds for the school’s International Committee. Palo Alto , a recording of the event, which includes favorites like “Blue Monk” and “Ruby, My Dear,” was released in 2020 on CD and vinyl. It offers a portal to another era—and some truly great music.

Cards belonging to the Codenames board game, one of our best gifts for dads, laid out in a grid across a table.

This easy-to-learn word-guessing game—which scales for smaller and larger groups—challenges players to reveal the spy among them.

Regardless of whether your dad plays a lot of board games, he’ll probably like Codenames , one of our picks for the best beginner board games for adults . This interactive word-guessing game is played in teams; pairing players of different abilities is a fun way to expose younger family members to new vocabulary words. Codenames is easy to learn, quick to play, and flexible in how many people can participate, from four to 12 (or more), so it’s a great choice for groups of various sizes.

Natural oenophile delights

A wine store stocked in abundance with various types of wines and spirits.

The Stranger Wine Share

This Brooklyn-based monthly wine club selects and sends two or three bottles of natural wines from producers all over the world.

If the dad you’re shopping for routinely unwinds with a glass of vino (or two) after work, he’d undoubtedly appreciate the chance to explore the world of natural wines. Deputy editor Jason Chen recommends Stranger Wines , a natural and organic wine shop in the heart of Brooklyn, New York. For $75 a month, this club will send your gift recipient two or three carefully selected bottles, plus a unique piece of art (co-created by the owners) that doubles as the tasting notes. Bottles may be anything from a Willamette Valley Pinot Gris to a blend from the Podrum Franjo hills of Croatia. With its impeccable taste level and friendly, adventurous vibe, this shop makes members feel like, well, part of the club.

Scruffy beard, begone

The Philips Norelco Multigroom 7000 MG7750, our pick for best beard trimmer, surrounded by its accessories.

Philips Norelco Multigroom Series 7000 MG7750

This cordless beard trimmer has a friendly design, lots of useful accessories, and just the right amount of power for comfortable, precise grooming.

If you have a bearded dad, he’ll likely appreciate our favorite beard trimmer , the Philips Norelco Multigroom Series 7000 MG7750 . This sturdy little unit has enough power to chop through thick growth, but it won’t cause unfortunate bald spots if his hand slips. It also comes with useful accessories, including 14 guide combs and a nose-hair-trimming attachment (remind him that it can work for ears, too). This model, which stands upright when not in use, can run cordless for up to 14 hours without a charge.

Homebody helpers

A person wearing a pair of gray glerups with their feet up on the couch.

Glerups Slip-On With Leather Sole

These felted wool shoes are comfy, easy to slip on, warm (but not sweaty), and well made. If your dad likes to shuffle around outside, go for the version with a rubber sole.

We’ve been wearing and recommending Glerups Wool Slippers for years, and no other felted-wool slippers we’ve tried have been as durable or supportive. These slippers’ open heel and leather outsoles make them ideal for sliding on and stepping outside on Dad-style errands, such as grabbing the newspaper, filling the bird feeder, or gazing at the gutters with intensity. For longer jaunts, they’re also available with a rubber sole . If your giftee prefers a little more coverage, the slipper boots are another great option. It goes without saying that both styles are streamlined and cool, and they look a lot less frumpy than many fuzzier pairs.

Deli delights

The contents of Katz's Birthday Box. Pastrami, corned beef, and cheese are piled up on plates in front of the other goods.

Katz’s Birthday Box

Send your dad a little taste of New York City with this jam-packed box of sandwich fixings and more from one of the country’s most cherished delicatessens.

Although cooking is a fun, collaborative, and often unifying task, it can also be extremely laborious. Instead, consider treating your dad to delectable items from Katz’s Delicatessen, located on New York City’s Lower East Side. Katz’s Birthday Box is perfect for any occasion, and it includes 1 pound each of pastrami, corned beef, and Swiss cheese, plus rye bread, sauerkraut, Russian dressing, 1 quart each of full-sour and half-sour pickles, mini black-and-white cookies, and mustard (of course!). The food arrives neatly stacked, with ice packs in a well-insulated box. It’s perfect to share with a big group—though obviously your dad may choose to treasure it all by himself.

Outdoor blanket

The Yeti Lowlands Blanket in blue.

Yeti Lowlands Blanket

This plush-on-top, sturdy-on-the-bottom blanket is luxurious, durable, and machine washable. But it has an eye-popping price tag.

Your dad could drive around with an old, all-purpose blanket tucked in the back of his car or truck. But this is a gift guide, and we’re here to spark joy, so consider getting your dad the Yeti Lowlands Blanket , our upgrade picnic-blanket pick . For starters, this puffy throw is plush enough to sleep with, but it’s also truly waterproof. Therefore, it’s a superior picnic blanket, even on dewy mornings or sodden afternoons, yet it’s soft enough for starlight snuggling or for use as stadium-seating padding. And because this blanket is designed to repel dirt, burrs, and dog hair, it’s ideal for lining a backseat full of muddy soccer players and paws. Most notable of all: Unlike all of the other blankets we tested, this one is entirely machine washable.

A perfect white tee

A person wearing the J.Crew Broken-In Short-Sleeve White T-shirt, one of our best gifts for dads.

J.Crew Broken-In White T-shirt

This well-made shirt comes in a number of cuts and styles, and it’s airy and comfortable to wear.

A white T-shirt is a sartorial blank slate, making it equally perfect for the casual dad who lives in sweatpants and the fashionable father who wants to showcase his accessories. Wirecutter’s style team researched and tested dozens of white T-shirts , and the J.Crew Broken-In Short-Sleeve White T-shirt was a crowd favorite. It fit most of our testers nicely, it was well constructed, and it felt comfortable and light to wear.

For cheese lovers

The contents of Jasper Hill's The Vermonter box nestled among wood shavings inside a vibrant blue and white box.

Jasper Hill Farm The Vermonter

This basket from an award-winning Vermont cheese maker includes special cheeses, plus crackers, nuts, and the option of some marvelous maple syrup.

For those who love cheese, the only gift that’s better than cheese is more of it. We enthusiastically recommend the offerings from Jasper Hill Farm, a cheese maker located in Greensboro, Vermont. ( The Vermonter collection pulls double duty as one of our favorite gift baskets that don’t suck .) Everything the farm sells is made at its on-site creamery or ripened in its underground aging facility, and the Vermonter basket in particular features the perfect assortment of three mouthwatering cheeses, a box of cranberry-pistachio crackers, and maple-roasted pecans.

Cool camp kitchen

The best camping stove, the Coleman Classic, shown connected to a small propane tank and with a moka pot and cast iron skillet on the stove's two burners.

Coleman Classic Propane Camping Stove

This straightforward, rugged two-burner stove is a cinch to set up, and it cooks food quickly and evenly.

If the dad you’re thinking of loves to camp, hunt, or just chill in the great outdoors, and he needs a new rig, our favorite camping stove will make a great gift. After testing 13 camping stoves and dissecting three of them, we found that none beat the Coleman Classic Propane Camping Stove . On a single 16-ounce tank of propane, this easy-to-transport stove can cook with both burners on high for roughly an hour, and it has the barest minimum of parts, so it’s easy to maintain.

We love finding gifts that are unusual, thoughtful, and well vetted. See even more gift ideas we recommend .

Bagging Your Limit Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 Read more

Your dad probably isn’t going to complain about any gift you give him. For better or worse, most modern dads don’t get hung up on presents. You know the meme of the older, bearded gentleman with a goofy smile opening a shirt just like the one he has on? There’s a lot of truth to that. However, I am not only a dad and a gear reviewer but also someone with a specific philosophy about what makes a good gift for middle-aged men like me.

You’ll notice some threads running through this manifesto guide: The best gifts for a dad are things that not only are relevant to his interests but also can be fairly described as “overkill.” Dads tend to like things that are overbuilt but useful. I’m sure some dads want to be “pampered,” but this is not me or the dads I know, who all physically cringed reading this sentence.

If you take away one idea, I hope it’s that when it comes to a gift for a dad, you can rarely go wrong by giving an expensive but excellent version of a thing we use anyway. We especially like things that win the admiration of our peers—nothing makes a dad happier than having another dad-aged dude take note of his stupidly expensive tire pressure gauge and then saying, “Oh, yeah, my kid got me that—they’re a little pricey but I gotta say, always works great.”

Check out the rest of our gift guides , including Gifts for Moms , Tech Gifts for Kids , and Gifts for Outdoorsy People .

The Best Pepper Grinder

As silly as it may sound, I have been on the hunt for the best pepper grinder for about two years. Männkitchen’s Pepper Cannon ended that search. This (admittedly expensive) anodized aluminum grinder is sturdy enough to pound a nail into a wall, and it has a finely tuned grinder mechanism that efficiently and precisely crushes peppercorns at more than 50 different mesh sizes. I’ve been working to find the perfect grind for the pepper portion of the rub on my smoked ribs and found it at about 12 clicks from the coarsest setting on this grinder. Well-calibrated gears and burrs made from high-carbon stainless steel make it easy to smoothly power through a pile of peppercorns, and the integrated cup on the bottom stores the pepper until you're ready to apply it. If your dad is a home cook who’s making lots of barbecue or steak, this grinder will up his game.

A Weather Station

For whatever reason, Dads like paying attention to the weather. The discussion goes beyond “really needing” that recent rain and digs into useless precision . That’s why they’ll love the Ambient Weather ecosystem recommended by WIRED senior editor Parker Hall. It lets you know everything from daily rainfall to the current UV index via several weather-measuring doohickeys, accessories, and screens.

The Ambient Weather WS-2902 includes a rain collector and two instruments to measure wind, but it's just one of many tools that can be combined. Building this system out will cover you on gift ideas for at least two to three gifting occasions. Even better, Ambient Weather keeps releasing new products. This is a boon for hard-to-shop-for fathers or nerdy types everywhere. Hall’s dad got his first Ambient Weather device in December, has now installed others in two locations, and is considering adding a third at the family vacation home. The rest of the Hall family is set on gifting ideas for years.

The Best Infrared Thermometer

There are many good cheap infrared thermometers other than this ThermoWorks model. Your dad probably doesn’t need the nearly 1,500 degrees of range and wide targeting laser with eight measurement points to grill burgers. But, having received this tool as a Christmas gift, and having subsequently used it to make many backyard pizzas and smoked meats, I can confirm that it makes for a great gift. Having a wider circle to read from makes the results much more reliable than the cheaper temp guns. It’s rugged too. I’ve dropped it a few times without any issues. Though mainly used for culinary applications, this is a serious tool that will come in handy if your dad is trying to track down a leak in the attic insulation that’s causing him to burn up a brontosaurus every damned day.

Bagging Your Limit

If there’s one thing most dads agree on, it’s the appeal of beating a system designed to swindle them. Thus the appeal of a maximum allowable carry-on bag. Airlines are always trying to chisel you, and this bag by Tom Bihn grants you every last square inch of promised space in the overhead bins on a typical domestic carrier.

But this Seattle-made bag does a lot more than max out your free luggage allotment, it’s also made of incredibly sturdy 1,050-denier ballistic nylon with bombproof YKK zippers. It has hidden backpack straps and the most comfortable cross-body strap I’ve ever used. This is a bag that excels at being tossed around and lugged down rough streets and through crowds where roller bags are a liability. I own two of these and have had the first one for more than a decade. I don’t fly without it and neither will your pops.

The 18 Best Portable Chargers for All of Your Devices

The Most Comfy Camp Chair

I’ve sat on a lot of camp chairs in my lifetime. Maybe this is my Archie Bunker moment, but there is only one camp chair I have strong positive feelings about, and this is it. The Nemo Stargaze is as much a hybrid hammock as it is a chair, with a seat that swings between the heavy-duty aluminum support posts. As the name implies, it reclines by adjusting a bevy of nylon straps so that Dad can lean his head back on the integrated pillow and stare up at the starry night sky (or fall asleep with a flask by the fire). Thanks to a low center of gravity it’s easy to get into and out of and you never worry about tipping over on sand or loose gravel.

Solo Stove Lloyd Modern Gel Fuel Fireplace

A Smokeless Modern Fireplace

I've been dreaming of owning a Malm Zircon fireplace for years, but they’re out of my price range and incompatible with my chimney-less home. This smokeless pit by Terraflame, a sub-brand of Solo Stove, fits the bill. The Lloyd’s cone-shaped silhouette echoes the midcentury modern design of the Malm, but instead of logs and a flue you get space for three gel canisters that provide six-inch flames with a soft crackle—it’s enough to feel like a real flame but without any smoke or soot.

The Lloyd is light enough to move around (I have it against a wall in my living room), and it’ll look great in the corner of a man cave, den, or basement. A smokeless fire pit offers your dad the perfect excuse to kick back with a glass of whiskey or wine and watch the flames dance, and this one looks good when it’s not lit too.

Ibex Indie Hoodie

A Super Versatile Wool Hoodie

I wore this midweight wool hoodie several days a week in the depth of winter it and it’s quickly become one of my absolute favorite pieces of clothing. The cut is sporty but dadbod-friendly. The thumb loops, zippable tall neck, and hood make it more versatile than a traditional wool long-sleeve shirt. Because it's wool, you can wear it many times without washing it, meaning your dad can use it as a layer throughout the winter whether he’s doing yard work, biking, or tossing a football around in the park. (I’ve worn it while doing all three.) For more picks, check out our guide to the Best Merino Wool Clothing by a fellow dad.

Atlas Coffee

A Fresh Cup Every Day

Your dad probably drinks coffee. He probably likes it when that coffee is delicious. If he likes variety—I’m an extremist on this and rarely buy the same bag twice—he’ll love a subscription to Atlas Coffee Club, which ships beans from all over the world in every style of roast and grind you can imagine. I am especially fond of the half-bag batches, which means I’m getting new flavors midway through the week.

Hedley Bennett Waxman Apron

A Waxed Canvas Apron

I tend to forget aprons exist until my shirt is covered with flour and/or barbecue sauce, which may be why I keep getting them as gifts. I have been gifted at least four novelty aprons in my nearly nine years of fatherhood. The problem with the other aprons I've received is that, while they did have dad jokes printed on them, the thin cotton didn’t do a lot to prevent seepage to my shirt. This waxed cotton apron from Hedley & Bennett solves for that. This is an apron you’ll find in professional kitchens.

Robot Coupe food processor

A Professional Grade Food Processor

You may have noticed that "professional grade" is a very powerful marketing term in the Dudeosphere. Even men in white-collar fields want to drive the truck the guy who hung their drywall drives (which seems to be the entire marketing philosophy behind trucks). The Robot Coupe is one of those things. This brand of French food processor is ubiquitous in professional kitchens and coveted by people who want that same performance at home. If you’re looking to julienne carrots and cucumbers for salad rolls or whip up a big batch of buttery smooth hummus, you’re not going to get there with a food processor from Target.

The Robot Coupe takes up about as much room as a KitchenAid mixer but is sturdy with sharp steel blades designed to keep their edge for years. The motor’s power is measured in horsepower. I bought mine used from a man who sold it because his wife said it took up too much space. When I asked him what he liked to make with it, he got a faraway look in his eye. It was understood that the appeal of the device extends beyond the practical; you want a Robot Coupe because it’s what the pros use. When I posted a picture of it to my Instagram, multiple dads messaged me to express envy or support. Your dad could be that dad.

Apple AirTags

Peace of Mind

Last summer I had what I can only describe as a harrowing moment in fatherhood: I couldn’t find my keys while on a road trip with my 8-year-old daughter 500 miles from home. It turns out I had a hole in the pocket of my shorts (dads are always wearing old clothing past the failure point) and to make it a true nightmare, I’d just been walking for a few miles on a path along the Mississippi River. I got lucky and found my keys in the parking lot. I immediately bought an AirTag and a keychain holder for it. Dads often feel deep personal responsibility and shame connected to things like losing their keys. A set of AirTags will help assuage that anxiety, plus allow him to low-key LoJack his bike or a vehicle (your dad knows what this means) and maybe even something like his tackle box.

Norlan Whiskey Glass

The Best Whiskey Glass

Designed in partnership with Scottish master distiller Jim McEwan , this double-walled whiskey glass is made to bring out aromatics and alleviate ethanol burn. WIRED reviewer Parker Hall (a new dad himself) has used this borosilicate glass many times with bourbon, Scotch, Rye, and other whiskeys of the world. It's a cool drinking experience, with the gorgeous inner glass meeting the outside at a perfect drip-free edge for easy sips. Hall still uses a regular tumbler for basic pours on the rocks, but when he's drinking any high-end spirit that should be sipped neat, this is his go-to drinkware. Don't just take it from him: It's won numerous design awards and sold a half-million units since its release.

Patagonia SnapT Fleece Pullover

The First and Best Fleece

I’m sure I’ve owned 50 fleeces over my lifetime, spending multiple years swaddled in napped polyester. Patagonia’s Synchilla Snap-T is not just the first and oldest fleece, but the best—which makes it a timeless gift for your dad. This iconic fleece sweater, an alternative to wool mountaineering wear first made as a collaboration with Polartec, features a loose, boxy cut. The default midweight is the best, but there are endless options. The colorways change seasonally, but the older ones age gracefully—I get constant compliments on my brown Synchilla with teal trim from fall 2012. Pick a seasonal pattern that’s a little offbeat if you’re giving this as a gift.

LL Bean Katadin shirt

A Do Anything Flannel

Depending on your dad's age, he may have been waiting patiently for decades for the triumphant return of flannel. Happily, it has arrived. This flannel from L.L.Bean is the best I’ve ever worn and I think your dad will agree. It’s a poly-wool blend that feels rich and soft but also durable. I wouldn’t hesitate to curl up by a firepit in this, nor to chop up a cord of firewood . The slightly fitted cut is flattering for me and probably looks even better on a dad who hits the gym regularly.

Personalized Gatorade Gx NFL Bottle

A Water Bottle Like the Pros Use

If your dad is an NFL fan, he’s probably noticed the new Gatorade bottles on the sidelines last season. The bottles not only have the team’s logo on them but are personalized with every player’s name, a delightful detail noted by Chiefs' WR Richie James in a viral video . Your dad is probably not a professional athlete who makes a million bucks a year running routes next to Taylor Swift’s boyfriend and catching passes from a two-time MVP, but if someone with that resume can have his day made by a bottle with his name on it, imagine how stoked a simpler man will be.

Read our Best Reusable Water Bottles guide for more recommendations.

Kinco Axeman 1930 Lined Gloves

Versatile and Cheap Leather Mittens

These leather mittens are ostensibly meant for chopping logs deep in the Maine woods, but if you’re familiar with them it’s probably because of their popularity within the snow sports community where they enjoy a cult following. With a bake-in leather treatment (a fun little Saturday morning project!) and an hour of time the Axeman can match the durability, warmth, and water-resistance of any mitts on the market. Even better, they soften and develop richer color with time, making them one of those rare products that will properly reward your dad’s loyalty and frugality. I’ve used them for two winters now both on the slopes and in the yard, and I can hardly wait for this season's first snow.

Inova T4R Long Throw Flashlight

A Tactical Flashlight

I’m working on a new guide to the best flashlights and have more to test, but so far this is the clear standout. The T4R is a mid-sized but heavy-duty rechargeable 1,220-lumen light that’s crushproof, water resistant, and built to military spec. It’s basically a pocket-sized spotlight. The beam goes about 3,000 yards, meaning you could shine it across the Golden Gate Bridge. It comes with a charging cradle and adapters for charging in your car and overseas. I don’t think I needed this flashlight to take my daughter trick-or-treating but I wasn’t sad about it. Your dad won’t be either.

Person using a Skylight outside

A Mega Light

Yes, there are less than two dozen items on this list and two are extravagantly expensive forms of lighting. Trust me, this is what dads want. We like seeing stuff at night. The Skylight is a new device from Goal Zero, makers of some of our favorite portable power stations , which can light an entire backyard, garage, or campsite. It has six adjustable LED panels putting out 6,000 lumens attached to a retractable pole that will soar up to 12 feet high to give you coverage for a 300-foot area. It’s all rated for IPX4 water resistance so you can leave it outside all night without worry. I’ve used it in the basement where it illuminated corners I forgot existed and in my backyard where it allowed me to grill into the evening without a headlamp. Finding new uses for it is half the fun of owning it.

Hydragun Heatpulse Knee Massager

The Bee's Knees

I recently injured my left knee … cleaning. Yes, that’s what happens when you’re dad age. It was an extremely large and ambitious cleaning project but, nevertheless, the injury left me feeling very old indeed. That knee injury has lingered for 11 months and only improved significantly in the two months since I got this miracle device from Hydragun. The Heatpulse straps directly onto your knee and is powered by a rechargeable pack that connects via USB-C. It heats up to a maximum setting of 70 degrees Celsius (158 degrees Fahrenheit) and has various massage speed settings. I just crank both up to the top and let it go until it shuts off and this is probably what your dad will do, too. The Heatpulse has made a marked difference in how good my knee feels.

Father’s Day Essay for Students in English [Easy* Words]

December 19, 2023 by Sandeep

Father’s Day Essay: Fathers are the hardest working men. They go to any extent to provide the best for their children. Father’s Day is celebrated on every 3rd Sunday of June. It’s a day to make all dads feel special and appreciate their selfless contributions towards their families. The day is mostly spent in outdoor activities or going to a short picnic. Children surprise them with gifts, cakes, cards and prepare them their favourite meals.

Essay on Father’s Day 500 Words in English

We have provided Father’s Day Essay in English, suitable for class 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10.

While growing up, every little child needs a superhero in their lives. A superhero is one person who is a role model for them. The first superhero that every child comes across in their life is a father. A father is that symbol of strength that binds the entire family together. The person who first comes to our mind whenever we are stuck in any problem is the father only, which makes the father a very pivotal element of the society and the pillar on which many rely. So to respect all their efforts, Father’s Day is celebrated on 3rd Sunday of June every year throughout the world.

History of Father’s Day

The significance of Father’s Day is celebrated on the same day as this in Catholic Europe is because Saint Joseph is believed to be the father of Jesus Christ and husband of the Virgin Mary. In the year 1907, in December, the tragic Monongah Mining disaster took place. The incident led to the tragic death of 361 men, among which 250 had children of their own. Naturally, the terrible disaster left all of these 250 kids fatherless.

A woman named Grace Golden Clayton was mourning the death of her father during the same time, and she proposed to the government that father’s day should be celebrated in order to honour the death of all the unfortunate men who used to be fathers of those children. This was how the father’s day began to be celebrated in the USA, and worldwide.

Celebrations of Father’s Day

In India, Father’s Day is celebrated all around the nation in all its pomp and glory. Father’s Day is a very personalised celebration done all over the world. Children buy gifts for their fathers and make cards to show the love, affection & respect to their fathers. On this day, several schools, colleges and other institutions arrange cultural programs and interactive sessions with the students and their fathers as well.

The television and radio telecasts various programs based on the same topic for that entire day. Even the online portals and social media get flooded with people posting pictures with their father, starting from children to adults. Although fathers should be respected and loved throughout the year, the one special day dedicated only to that man in our lives who is the pillar of our family makes the day even more splendid.

Essay on Father's Day 2021

By celebrating Father’s Day, we not only celebrate fatherhood but also their indispensable impact and role in our lives. We celebrate strength, security, sacrifice and every single aspect of fatherhood that comes with it. Not only on this special day but every day we should wake up in the morning with immense gratitude towards our fathers for providing us with the life that we are living, for showering us with love and presents, for protecting us against all evils and for being our guide and support system.

Essay on Father’s Day 200 Words in English

Below we have provided a short essay on Father’s Day, suitable for class 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 school students.

Father’s Day is usually celebrated on 3rd Sunday of June every year. The significance of this day is paramount in everyone’s life. A day solely dedicated to celebrating the fatherhood in our personalised way throughout the globe. The role of a father in a child’s life is incomparable to anyone else. A father is a person who is always there for your support when you turn back, ready with a solution to every sort of problem, who takes care of all your needs & keep encouraging you throughout your life.

Father is the pillar of strength of a family which keeps the bond strong in all happy & challenging moments in life. Everyone celebrates father’s day by making all the possible things to make the specific day unique for him. Let it be making cards, flowers or by performing something exclusively for him. This year I baked a cake for my father with the help of my mom & dedicated a song for him to let him know how important he is for me. I also spent the whole day with him, trying to help him in his work & responsibilities.

In the evening we also watched his favourite movie. Also, I promised myself that day that I will always try to keep him happy & will try to share his responsibilities from that day onwards. This father’s day was one of the memorable days for me. But we all need to remember that we can’t stop by celebrating it on one day, we need to have the care & love for him throughout our life. He is a person who makes us learn how to live life; his sacrifices for us are immense. We need to make every day memorable for him as he keeps doing for us.

“The power of a dad in a child’s life is unmatched.” —Justin Ricklefs

My Father's Gift

My Father's Gift

The concept of acceptance simply means receiving or taking something given. For example, if one gives Me a gift and I take it in good, faith that would be referred to as acceptance. Acceptance is a sign of affection. Acceptance of someone can mean not criticizing them or their actions. Similarly, acceptance can be a form of conflict avoidance. On certain occasions we tend to receive gifts and presents that are not our preferences or specifications. But by offering to accept it is a sign of peace with those who take their precious time to buy us gifts. Acceptance of gifts is a common example of showing our true value for someone or something. Many times we do give gifts to show affection, thoughtfulness and most importantly love for those we cherish. A simple gift that we give from our hearts has the highest probability of being accepted. We give and receive gifts to and from our friends, siblings, uncles, aunts, teachers, parents and even from our so-called enemies. Majority of gifts are given out of good intentions. We receive gifts during important occasions in our lives. In relation to that, we do give and accept gifts on special occasions and days like Christmas day, Boxing day, Mother's Day, Father's days among others. A good example of acceptance in the form of gift is when my father bought me a car as a gift during last year's Christmas festive. This was after my good performance in school. This example will give an overview of what acceptance entails.

It all began during the end of the winter breaks in the year 2015. My father promised to buy me a car when I did exceptionally well in my studies. He promised me that if I emerged among the top 10 in my class, he would reward me with a car. Immediately after getting back to school, I decided I had to work extra hard to meet my father's wish of being in the top ten of my class. I decided that I would visit the library majority of my free times to study other disciplines and to also ensure my English was good like other students. Together with my best friend, I decided to write down a study timetable. I also decided to put video games on hold. Apart from that, I also decided that there was going to be no more playing my favorite game Baseball. Because I avoided all the aforementioned, I was able to become position six in my entire class. When I got home, my father was extremely delighted about my hard work in school. Together with my mother, they promised to honor their promise when they would be back from their trip to Japan. Then, it happened. On Christmas Eve, my father honored his promise and purchased for me a brand new Volvo S8. Even though my desire was always to own a Subaru Forester, I could not decline the gift my father had bought me out of love. I accept the gift and thanked my father for it even though it was not what I intended to get as my car.

Acceptance is a peaceful sign among people. Accepting of what other people do to us is a sign of love and affection towards us. However, we should not misuse the concept of acceptance by accepting everything that in one way or the other may harm others. We should strive at all times to accept the relevant things that will not in any way harm us or others. Similarly, we should show acceptance to our communities and families by buying them gifts and good stuff.

Model Answer 1

Imagine this: there's a special friend in your life who always lights up your day. Now, picture the perfect gift for them, something that captures the essence of your friendship. What comes to mind is a custom-made photo album, filled with memories that span the years of your friendship. It's not just any photo album, but one where each page unfolds a story, a laughter, a moment that you both treasure.

Why a photo album, you might wonder? Well, in today's fast-paced digital world, we often overlook the charm of printed photographs. Each picture in this album would be a pause button on life's precious moments, a tangible piece of a memory that can be held and cherished. This friend, let's call them Jamie, has been there through thick and thin. From your first awkward school dance to the day you both graduated, Jamie has been more than a friend; they've been your confidant, your rock.

Choosing this gift is a nod to all those times when you both promised to be there for each other. It's a way of saying, "I remember, and I cherish every single moment." You see, Jamie isn't just a friend; they're a part of your life's journey. Giving this album would be a reminder of the laughs, the tears, and the growth you've shared. It's more than a gift; it's a treasure trove of memories, a narrative of your friendship that tells a story far beyond words.

So why this gift? Because in a world where everything is transient and fleeting, this photo album is a testament to something enduring – the beauty of shared memories. It's a gift that doesn't just sit on a shelf; it lives in the heart. And in choosing it, you're not just giving a present; you're honoring a bond that has been the backdrop to your life's most significant moments. This, in every sense, is what makes it the perfect gift for Jamie.

Why this is a High Scoring Answer

When you're tasked with the challenge to "Describe a gift you would like to buy for your friend," it's essential to present a response that's not only comprehensive but also resonates with the personal experiences and emotions that make your speech engaging and relatable. The sample answer provided exemplifies a high-scoring response for several key reasons.

Firstly, the answer delves deep into the realm of personal storytelling. By choosing a custom-made photo album as the gift, the response taps into universally cherished values: memories, friendship, and the irreplaceable joy of shared experiences. This approach makes the answer not just a response to a question, but a narrative that any listener can connect with emotionally.

Secondly, the level of detail in the response elevates it significantly. Describing the photo album not just as a collection of images, but as a journey through shared moments, transforms the gift from a simple object into a symbol of enduring friendship. This kind of vivid description is exactly what examiners look for – it demonstrates an ability to use language not just correctly, but creatively and expressively.

Moreover, the response excellently utilizes descriptive language and a varied vocabulary. Words like 'tangible', 'confidant', and 'testament' showcase a strong command of English, crucial for achieving a high score in the IELTS Speaking section. The use of these words in context also demonstrates an ability to convey complex ideas fluently and precisely – a key criterion in the IELTS assessment.

The answer's structure also contributes to its high score potential. It flows logically, beginning with the introduction of the gift, moving through the explanation of its significance, and concluding with a reflection on the deeper meaning of the gift. This coherent structure makes the response easy to follow and shows an ability to organize thoughts effectively.

For those of you looking to enhance your preparation for the IELTS, exploring our exclusive IELTS books (download pdf) would be a wise decision. These resources are crafted to guide you through each section of the exam, ensuring you're well-equipped with the knowledge and skills to excel.

In summary, this sample answer is a prime example of how to effectively address the task of describing a gift for a friend in the IELTS Speaking exam. It goes beyond mere description, weaving personal elements and emotional depth into the narrative, showcasing a high level of English proficiency and the ability to engage the listener – essential components for a high-scoring IELTS Speaking response.

Model Answer 2

Envision the perfect gift for a cherished friend, something that transcends the ordinary and holds a deeper meaning. What immediately springs to mind is a personalized journal, not just any journal, but one intricately crafted, with a hand-painted cover that reflects my friend’s personality and passions. This journal would be a canvas for their thoughts, dreams, and aspirations.

Why a journal, you might ask? In our digital age, where fleeting thoughts are often typed and swiped away, the act of writing by hand brings a certain mindfulness and introspection. This friend, whom we'll call Alex, is a thinker, a dreamer, someone who often gets lost in their thoughts and finds solace in the written word. Alex has a way with words, and their thoughts are like uncharted territories, waiting to be explored.

Choosing this gift is more than just an appreciation of Alex's love for writing; it's a tribute to the depth of their thoughts and feelings. It's a way of saying, "Your thoughts are valuable, and they deserve a beautiful place to reside." Each page of this journal offers a sanctuary for Alex’s ideas, a private haven where creativity is nurtured and cherished.

This isn’t just any gift; it's a vessel for self-expression, a companion in moments of solitude. It's an invitation for Alex to embark on a journey of self-discovery, to pen down their innermost thoughts and dreams. In a world that often rushes past without a second thought, this journal is a reminder to pause, reflect, and dream.

Therefore, this journal is the embodiment of a meaningful gift. It represents a deep understanding of what Alex holds dear, an acknowledgment of their inner world. It’s more than a present; it’s a gesture that says, “I see you, I hear you, and I celebrate the person you are.” That’s the essence of why this journal is the ideal gift for Alex.

When you describe a gift you would like to buy for your friend, your answer needs to reflect not only your proficiency in English but also your ability to connect thoughts and emotions in a coherent and engaging manner. The provided sample answer does this exceptionally well, making it a strong candidate for a high score in the IELTS Speaking section.

Firstly, the response is anchored by a clear and direct engagement with the task – to describe a thoughtful gift. The choice of a personalized journal is significant and meaningful, offering a deep insight into the friendship and the personality of the friend, Alex. This level of personalization and detail is exactly what IELTS examiners look for, as it demonstrates the ability to think critically and convey ideas creatively.

The language used in the answer is both varied and sophisticated, showcasing a wide vocabulary. Phrases like “a canvas for their thoughts, dreams, and aspirations,” and “a vessel for self-expression” not only paint a vivid picture of the gift but also exhibit the speaker's linguistic range – an essential aspect in achieving a high score.

Moreover, the answer is structured effectively, with a clear introduction, development, and conclusion. It starts by setting the context, moves into explaining the significance of the journal, and concludes by reinforcing why this particular gift is so meaningful. This coherent structure makes the response easy to follow and indicates a strong ability to organize thoughts – a key criterion in the IELTS Speaking assessment.

The response also shows an excellent use of emotional depth, making the description more than just a factual account. By illustrating how the journal is a “reminder to pause, reflect, and dream,” the speaker connects emotionally with the listener, a skill highly valued in the IELTS Speaking test.

For further enhancement in your IELTS preparation, don't forget to check out our exclusive IELTS books (download pdf) . They're designed specifically for you, offering a comprehensive guide to ace each section of the exam.

In brief, the sample answer effectively uses its chosen theme – “Describe a gift you would like to buy for your friend” – to demonstrate a high level of English proficiency, both in terms of vocabulary and expressive ability. It stands as an excellent example of how to craft a response that is not only linguistically strong but also emotionally engaging and personally meaningful, key aspects of a high-scoring answer in the IELTS Speaking exam.

Model Answer 3

Picture this: a gift that's not just a mere object, but a gateway to a world of relaxation and tranquility for a dear friend. The ideal present I have in mind is a premium, artisanal tea set, complete with an assortment of exotic, organic teas. This isn't just any tea set, but a carefully curated collection that reflects my friend's love for the finer things in life, and their appreciation for the art of tea brewing.

Why choose a tea set? In a fast-paced world where moments of peace are rare, this gift offers an oasis of calm. My friend, whom we'll call Riley, leads a hectic life, often juggled between professional commitments and personal endeavors. Riley, a connoisseur of gourmet experiences, finds solace in the subtle art of tea tasting – a practice that brings a sense of serenity and mindfulness.

Opting for this artisanal tea set is more than a gesture of giving; it’s an invitation for Riley to indulge in a ritual of relaxation. Each cup of tea brewed from this set is not just a drink, but a journey through flavors and aromas that soothe the soul and rejuvenate the spirit. The teas, sourced from the finest gardens around the world, offer a sensory experience that transcends the ordinary.

In choosing this gift, the message is clear: it’s a recognition of Riley’s need for moments of reprieve and a celebration of their refined taste. It’s an acknowledgment that amidst life's chaos, there lies the beauty of taking a pause, of savoring the quiet moments.

Thus, this artisanal tea set stands as the perfect embodiment of thoughtfulness. It’s a testament to the friendship we share, a bond that appreciates the need for quality time and self-care. It’s more than a present; it’s a gesture of understanding, a symbol of the peaceful moments we wish for those we hold dear.

In the context of the IELTS Speaking exam, when you are asked to "Describe a gift you would like to buy for your friend," the ability to articulate a detailed and imaginative response is crucial. The sample answer discussing the artisanal tea set is an excellent example of a high-scoring response for several reasons.

Firstly, the choice of the gift itself – a premium, artisanal tea set – is unique and thoughtful. It reflects a deep understanding of the friend's interests and lifestyle, demonstrating the speaker's ability to think critically and personalize their response. This level of detail, where the tea set is described as not just a gift but a "gateway to a world of relaxation and tranquility," showcases the ability to use language imaginatively, a key criterion for a high score in IELTS Speaking.

The language used throughout the answer is rich and varied. Phrases like "oasis of calm," "subtle art of tea tasting," and "sensory experience that transcends the ordinary" not only add depth to the description but also exhibit a broad vocabulary and the ability to express complex ideas. This is crucial for impressing the examiner and achieving a higher band score.

Structurally, the response is well-organized, with a clear introduction, elaboration, and a meaningful conclusion. It begins by introducing the gift, delves into the reasons behind choosing it, and concludes by reflecting on the significance of the gift in the context of the friendship. He is the one who puts in every ounce of his energy in making me happy. It’s his disposal at which I had experienced all the periods of positive transitions in my life. Every day I get up in the morning I look at my dad and think of being a man like him. I don’t know but there’s something so special about him that makes me fall in love with his way of life. Thank you Dad for being my father!!

Father's Day Essays

A father is someone everyday who has a day full of profound reflection and that is with regard to his children and family. He is the most important member of the family whose love for his children is just like oxygen for the survival of the lives. There’s nothing that big that he could not do for his family and there’s no such sacrifice that he will not do. Every little thing he does makes him great!!

He has that unfathomable energy and the unconditional love in his heart that compels every child to keep following him in the hope of learning a new thing every time. The patience and perseverance he has to make everything possible in his children’s life is quite a thing that makes him a superhero in his children’s eyes. It’s sometimes perplexing to understand from where he draws such energy to make his children look at the positive aspect of every situation he may be in.

My father is my first love!! I love spending time with my father on my favourites like playing badminton, practicing music, sitting in the nearby park and the most important of all listening to what he teaches me every day before I go to sleep. Sometimes, it feels as if he is the angel which God has sent for protecting me through. I love him and my love keeps multiplying every day. I wish everyone could have the privilege of having a Father like the one I have and I wish them they experience the kind of bond that I share with my father. I Love you Dadaa!! You are the best Dad in the whole world!!

It is my Dad who encourages me to be best in my class. He is the reason that makes me understand what’s wrong and what’s wrong and stops me from acquiring the bad and unethical ways of life. I play with my Dad whenever he has time, even at night we play indoor games while my Mother is asleep.

He is into an interesting job! He is an actor and I love the way he portrays every little life even with a meticulously comprehensible approach. He had portrayed many characters and I love watching all of them. I want to wish him all the very best for his future endeavours and I wish he keeps entertaining me and his audience!! Love You Dad!!

Father’s day is such an occasion which comes with a spirit of celebrating the presence of Father and his efforts in making up the life of the family. On this day, to honour and bring forth the efforts of father people gift to their father and other special things like arranging dinners or a vacation may be to a foreign country.

Father’s day first was celebrated in 1908, July 5, in West Virginia by Robert Webb at church names Central Methodist in Fairmont. In the preceding Year in 1909, while listening to the Mother’s day sermon, Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, decided to celebrate father’s Day. It was his father, Henry, who had brought him up after his Mothers died at a very young age. He wanted to pay off for what he has done for him and therefore he celebrated June 19 in 1910 as Father’s Day.

Father’s day is all about celebrating and expressing the gratitude and love towards our Father. Over the years the bond that the child and Father share has became stronger and therefore it is evident that there has to be a celebration. There are various ways of celebrating Father’s day some of which are:

  • Pampering your dad by booking a spa package for him
  • Getting for him a personalised mug with the picture of the family printed on it.
  • Planning picnic on Father’s Day
  • Gift him a state-of-the-art gadget on Father’s day.

These are few Father’s Day Essays which children can use to show gratitude to their Fathers. Wish all the best to your fathers with love and reverence. He will be delighted to have a child like you in his life. That’s indeed your duty to make him feel that way!! Happy Father’s Day!!

Father’s Day Gift Etiquette

Father's Day Card

Dear Diane,

My sons and I always give their dad a Father’s Day present, and of course, I send my father something special as well. However, I’m wondering if I should also be giving a small gift to my three adult sons and my son in law, since they have children of their own? Thanks in advance for your advice! – Margaret

Hello Margaret,

What a great question, and congratulations on a growing family! Gift giving is not an obligation, and it is certainly not mandatory to buy gifts for your adult sons on Father’s Day. However, if you are inclined to buy them something special, or take them out to dinner in honor of “fatherhood,” by all means do so. The short answer is, “it’s up to you.” No rule – do what your heart tells you to do. I am sure your children will have their own personal plans, and most likely will spend a good part of their day enjoying each other’s company. You may be included, but be aware that adult children like to start their own traditions as well.

You may want to choose a day, Father’s Day or another, and invite the entire family over for a Father’s Day Brunch . It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up and see your grandchildren! Don’t get your feelings hurt if not everyone can attend. Some additional thoughts on making the day meaningful and fun can be found on my Father’s Day Etiquette page.

– a Gift for My Mother

– a Gift for My Mother

A gift for My Mother The story is written by Viv McDade. She was born in Ireland, grew up in Zimbabwe and lived in South Africa for most of her life. While living in South Africa, she was a part of some organizations. She now lives in Ireland. In the short story the narrator is a girl called Lucy. The story is told by a first person narrator and from her viewpoint. When a story is told by a first person, you need to realize that what the narrator is recounting might not be the objective truth.

A first person narrator often tries to justify her actions, because she wants to put herself in a positive light to the readers. We know that Lucy is the Narrator but she is also the main character in the story which you should have in mind while reading the essay. Lucy is a girl at the age of ten. She wants to her parents to feel good about each other. She obeys her mother without protesting. She hears her mother’s “dreamy voice”; when she gives her mother some flowers. She wants her to be happy. She is a girl who cares very much for her family.

ready to help you now

Without paying upfront

She is only 10 years old and could easily be called a caring girl. She is respectful to strangers, which we also see when she sells flowers to them. As it’s mentioned in the text, she lives in a poor family. Her relation with her father is very good, she feels that her father always helps her when she is nervous or when she feels unintelligent, especially in her homework. Her father doesn’t earn too much by working at a garage and it can theoretically be because he is too lazy. It says in the text that Lucy had longed to give her mother something very precious and beautiful.

For that reason she wants to surprise her by selling some flowers and giving her the earned money. She doesn’t think about the consequences. In my opinion the reason why she doesn’t do that could be her love for her family. The mother is very possessive as she always thinks about the future and what they can live on. The money her husband comes with isn’t enough for them to live on. As it says in the text the story takes place in South Africa. We don’t get to know when the story takes place, but it looks like it could be after apartheid because Lucy goes to school.

We know that some of the people in the area are rich. On the other side of the railway line there is a rich neighborhood and we don’t get anything else mentioned besides the fact that her mother always had dreamed of living there. Lucy decides to pick some pretty wild flowers and to sell them in the rich neighborhood. Lucy is glad because she thinks her mother will be pleased with the money she has earned. However her mother is very angry and forces Lucy to return the money she has earned.

She has her pride, she will not live on charity, and she will not have her neighbors think she sends her 10 year old daughter out to earn money. The themes in the short story “A gift for my mother” could very well be the family relationships and the consequences of being in a poor family. In the start of the text we get to know that it is a family with a lot of tension especially when the mother mentions “money” and the father suddenly gets angry. Another thing we see her is the relation between the parents which isn’t very good. One other theme could be pride in the family.

They are indeed poor and the mother could easily spend the extra money, but she will at all costs not desire it to be thought that she has sent her daughter off to beg. One woman refuses to accept the money and suggests a talk with the ?? mother. When Lucy tells her that, she puts the money in her purse but will not have any talk. She highlights her message clearly; they will not have any alms. We can obviously see that it is a family of honor, even that they are very poor. They don’t have much money to live on but still they don’t take the money which they could very well use.

Someone said: “Motherhood is the most merciful love”. Someone said: “Motherhood is the most tolerant of love”. There is nothing stronger and purer than maternal love. It is a unique bond between the child and his mother, and the first real love a child experiences the moment he is born. My life has taught me that maternal love is equally self-giving, generous, unmercenary, and irreplaceable. It is unique. It is unstoppable and never-ending. It is the greatest miracle a child witnesses and experiences from the very first until the very last day of his life. The selfless and unrequited character of maternal love turns our mothers into the carriers of unique life philosophy and vision, which we accept, comprehend, and later transfer to our own children.

It was a routine summer day in 2000. I woke up early, opened the window, and spread my arms to welcome the new day. I felt greedy to grasp and feel the sense of fresh and chilly air on my skin and in my lungs. For a moment, I thought the air could touch my soul. Suddenly, I realized the significance of the day. It was no longer routine, but filled with unbelievable expectations – that was the day when my mother had been born. It was my mother’s birthday – the day that was equally significant for me and the most special person in my life. I was standing in front of the window, trying to imagine my mother’s face and her mood on that special day. However, I could not wait any longer and had to act quickly, to be able to prepare my surprise before she could see me.

I gathered all pocket money I had, to buy a perfect gift for my mother. I must say that I had been extremely thorough in my pocket expenses, trying to save as much as I could to surprise my mom on that special day. I left the house, thinking about my mother and my love to her. I walked down the road, thinking of how my mother would react when she saw my present. I knew she would be surprised. I felt she would be delighted. I was confident she would smile and whisper “thank you, darling”. I expected that my present would make her feel special and loved. I walked down the road, thinking of how good or hurtful I had been toward my mother over the last year. No, our relations had never been perfect. We could argue and even quarrel, but those rare instances never spoiled the unique bond we longed to preserve and expand. It was a unique sense of belonging which we experienced every single second of our lives. Birthday was a perfect occasion to prove my commitment to my mother. It was a perfect way to make my mother feel valued and recognized. That was the day when I could finally reveal my gratitude for everything my mother had done for me.

With so much on my mind, I did not notice how I approached a small mall. To a large extent, it was a subconscious move I could not control. I went in without thinking of the amount of money I held in my pocket. I was wandering across the lines of products and wonderfully beautiful things, until I realized that the money I had could not suffice to bring my mother a decent gift. With the sense of sorrow, regret, and disappointment I had to leave. I was standing in the middle of the parking lot, thinking of what I would have to do. I got extremely reasonable and thorough. I knew my finances were scarce, but I could not let my mother go without a present. I decided to visit several different malls, and that was, probably, the best decision I could take at the moment. I decided not to give up. I would be persistent and reasonable in my search for the best birthday present. However, the next series of visits to smaller and larger malls went without any result. I was growing nervous. I was losing time but did not find anything even close to what would suit my mother and the remarkable birthday occasion. Suddenly, I saw a small roadside shop and reluctantly walked inside.

The first thought that happened to me when I entered the store was “What am I doing here?” I was surrounded by a variety of smaller and bigger items, the ones which people traditionally buy on their way to other places. The name “roadside store” told everything for itself, and I doubted I would find anything nice there. The cashier man might have noticed my hesitation, because I heard the traditional, even impersonal may-I-help-you question. The question expressed more duty than genuine willingness to help and sounded extremely automatic. I answered, “I am looking for a birthday gift for my mother, but I feel ashamed to say that I do not have enough money in my pocket”. Suddenly, the cashier’s face grew serious, and he uttered: “The best gift you can give your mother is love!” I left the roadside store, thinking what the cashier man meant when he talked about love and what I could do to express my love and gratitude to my mother. Money no longer mattered. I felt that there was something else, more valuable than money. So, I was developing a new strategy of birthday celebration for my mom.

I decided that to cook a meal for my mother would be an excellent way to celebrate her birthday. I went into the kitchen, filled with excitement and anticipation. Everything in the kitchen was familiar to me, but suddenly I realized how I missed cooking for my parents. The years at school burdened me with all sorts of responsibilities, leaving no time for real family pastime. I felt an urgent sense of guilt and something I had been missing for ages. Suddenly, I heard my mother coming out her room. The steps approaching, I had to take fast decision. Longevity noodles were everything I could think of at that time.

I was rushing around the kitchen. Everything turned into a mess. I had to do everything quickly, not to spoil the birthday picture. I heard my mother coming from the outside and rushed to meet her. Upon eeeing me in the kitchen, my mother smiled secretly and genuinely. She saw the noodles… Her look was strange, anticipating, surprised, and – oh my goodness! – grateful! She was grateful, and I felt so much appreciated for everything I had done to make my mother’s birthday special! My mother smiled while I was singing a birthday song and in a second, her black hair seemed to go white. With a tint of bitterness in my voice, I asked: “Anything wrong?” My mother raised her eyes, – they were filled with tears: “This is the best birthday I ever had in my life”…

I am standing in front of my window… Ten years have passed since the moment I heard those words. I can see my mother, sitting in front of me with a plate of longevity noodles and smiling. I can see myself running from store to store, searching for something I did not know I was holding in my hands; and in my heart. I look into the sky. Clouds are passing me by, and no one can imagine how much my mother’s birthday has changed my life. Even millions are not enough to get someone to love you for who you are. Even billions cannot secure you from tragic mistakes and failures. Material things are a double-edged sword – they can be equally valuable and killing. They can be useful and cold. They can be surprising and unimportant. The value of life is in being able to show love and affection every day. The value of life is in trying to remind someone of how loved and cherished they are. To love someone is a daily work. It is like sports – once you stop, you lose your skills and grow weaker. There is nothing better than to know somebody loves you, unconditionally and passionately. There is nothing better than to act as if you always miss an opportunity to show your love to others. “I will never forget that day,” – I keep saying to myself. I grab my suitcase and leave the house. Fresh air and street noise beat my face. I stop and look back into the window, to see my reflection… I pick up the phone and call my mother… and in a moment, I am on my way to the next point of no-return which, no matter the distance, cannot reduce the feelings of closeness and connectedness that follow me everywhere… thank you…
