who inspires you and why answers with examples

This blog post will explore who inspires you and why they inspire you. We will also look at how we can use these people as motivation in our own lives.

Table of Contents

What is inspiration?

Inspiration can be defined as the process of stimulating the mind to create new ideas or thoughts. It is often used in the context of creativity, but it can also apply to other areas of life such as motivation, problem-solving, and leadership.

Why are people inspired by others?

One of the most common reasons people are inspired by others is because they have achieved something that we admire. Maybe they have overcome great odds to achieve their goals, or they have made a significant contribution to society.

Another reason people are inspired by others is that they possess qualities that we aspire to have. Maybe they are kind and compassionate, or intelligent and successful.

Lastly, people are often inspired by others because of the way they live their lives. Maybe they are always positive and upbeat, or maybe they live life with a sense of purpose. Whatever the case may be, we can all learn from someone.

How to find role models who inspire you

One of the best ways to find role models who inspire you is to think about the people who have positively impacted your life. These could be family members, teachers, coaches, mentors, or friends. Once you have identified these people, take some time to reflect on why they inspire you.

It is also important to seek out new sources of inspiration, especially if you feel like you are in a rut. There are many ways to do this, such as reading biographies or watching TED Talks. You can also follow inspiring people on social media or attend events where they will be speaking.

Why does the interviewer ask this question?

The interviewer asks this question for a few reasons.

  • First, they want to know you better and see what motivates you.
  • Second, they want to see if you have the ability to be inspired by others. This is important because it shows that you can learn from other people and that you are not just focused on yourself.
  • Third, they want to see if you can identify who your role models are and why they inspire you. This shows that you are reflective and have thought about who has positively influenced your life.
  • Answering this question well can give the interviewer a good sense of who you are and whether or not you would be a good fit for the job.

This question can demonstrate your values and what you believe is important in life.

Preparation

My cousin laura.

Someone I admire is my cousin Laura. She’s five years older than me, so she’s 19 now and she lives in Bristol. She’s very friendly and confident and she’s got long, wavy, brown hair and greeny-brown eyes. She’s medium height, slim and very fit because she’s a dancer.

She’s been dancing since she was six years old and trains every day at her dance school. She wants to be a professional dancer, but it’s a very difficult profession because it’s so competitive. She often dances in shows and I’ve been to watch her several times. Her favourite type of dance is modern, which is sometimes a bit strange, but I love watching her dance.

Laura is very busy because she also studies photography at university. She’s a really good photographer and has taken lots of amazing photos of me and my family. Her photos have won a few prizes and last year one of her photos was in an exhibition at an art gallery in London.

Laura doesn’t have a lot of free time and she’s also trying to learn German because she wants to go to Germany next year to do a photography course. I think Laura is very hard-working and she deserves to become a professional dancer one day.

It's not unusual for a college admissions essay to talk about a person who played an important role in your development. Whether this is a parent, a friend, a coach, or a teacher, such essays can be powerful if they avoid common pitfalls.

Key Takeaways: An Essay on an Influential Person

  • Don't just describe a person you admire. Be analytical and reflective to explain why you admire them.
  • Essays focused on parents or celebrities are common and often not the best choice for your focus.
  • All good application essays are about you , even when you are writing about someone else, so make sure the admissions folks are getting to know you through your essay.

With the pre-2013 Common Application , one of the essay prompts stated, "Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence." While you won't find this question among the seven 2020-21 Common Application essay prompts , the current application still allows you to write about an influential person with the "topic of your choice" option . Some of the other prompts also leave the door open for writing about an influential person.

Do Much More than Describe the Influential Person

Any essay on an influential person needs to do much more than describe that person. The act of describing requires very little critical thought, and as a result, it doesn't demonstrate the kind of analytical, reflective, and thoughtful writing that will be required of you in college. Be sure to examine why the person was influential to you, and you should analyze the ways in which you have changed because of your relationship with the person.

Think Twice About Essays on Mom or Dad

There is nothing wrong with writing about one of your parents for this essay, but make sure your relationship with your parent is unusual and compelling in some way. The admissions folks get a lot of essays that focus on a parent, and your writing won't stand out if you simply make generic points about parenting. If you find yourself making points like "my Dad was a great role model" or "my mother always pushed me to do my best," rethink your approach to the question. Consider the millions of students who could write the exact same essay.

Don't Be Star Struck

In most cases, you should avoid writing an essay about the lead singer in your favorite band or the movie star who you idolize. Such essays can be okay if handled well, but often the writer ends up sounding like a pop culture junkie rather than a thoughtful independent thinker.

Obscure Subject Matter is Fine

Be sure to read Max's essay on an influential person. Max writes about a rather unremarkable junior high kid he encountered while teaching summer camp. The essay succeeds in part because the choice of subject matter is unusual and obscure. Among a million application essays, Max's will be the only one to focus on this young boy. Also, the boy isn't even a role model. Instead, he's an ordinary kid who inadvertently makes Max challenge his preconceptions.

The "Significant Influence" Need Not Be Positive

The majority of essays written about influential people focus on role models: "my Mom/Dad/brother/friend/teacher/neighbor/coach taught me to be a better person through his or her great example..." Such essays are often excellent, but they are also a bit predictable. Keep in mind that a person can have a significant influence without having an entirely "positive" influence. Jill's essay , for example, focuses on a woman with only a few positive qualities. You could even write about someone who is abusive or hateful. Evil can have as much "influence" on us as good.

You Are Also Writing About Yourself

When you choose to write about a person who has had an influence on you, you will be most successful if you are also reflective and introspective. Your essay will be partly about the influential person, but it is equally about you. To understand someone's influence on you, you need to understand yourself — your strengths, your short-comings, the areas where you still need to grow.

As with the college admissions essay, you need to make sure a response reveals your own interests, passions, personality, and character. The details of this essay need to reveal that you are the type of person who will contribute to the campus community in a positive way.

How to Write a Descriptive Essay About a Person You Admire

essay about who you admire

Writing a descriptive essay, or a “describe a person you admire essay” can be a fantastic way of developing your writing skills. These skills will be particularly useful if you choose to write fiction.

This type of writing is very different to academic writing, but it is hugely rewarding, and doing it well can become a stepping stone into a career in writing in the United Kingdom.

Step one: Choose your subject/Brainstorm

The essay about someone you admire could focus on, for example, your father, your mother, a friend, a grandparent, a celebrity like UK favourite Kate Middleton, a public figure like Mahatma Ghandi or your favourite teacher.

Write a paragraph about a person you admire as you brainstorm. Think about what message you want to get across.

Step two: Write your first draft

Your first draft is exactly that – a first draft. Don’t worry too much about everything being perfect. The most important thing at this point is getting all your thoughts down on paper.

Remember, this is a descriptive essay about a person you love and feel admiration for – you want the reader to feel as though they know the person after reading your piece.

A good writer can make you feel as though you know a person. A great writer makes you care about the person.

Show, don’t tell

I’m sure you’ve come across this term before. It’s the mantra of most creative writers and their teachers. But what does it actually mean?

It’s simple really. Use words to build up a picture in your reader’s mind. Don’t just tell them things; let them see it in their mind.

For example:

Telling – The man was angry

Showing – The man jumped to his feet, his face red and frowning. He gave an unintelligible roar, spraying spittle in front of his face. He crossed the room in three quick strides, wrenching the door open and slamming it shut behind him.

Do you see the difference there? You can show the reader that the man is angry without even using the word. I’m sure I don’t need to explain why showing is a better writing technique.

Use the senses

To really bring your piece to life and make the reader feel a personal connection to your writing, use all of the senses:

Sight – Describe the physical attributes of the person

Sound – What does their speech sound like?

Touch – What do they feel like – for example, are their hands rough from years of hard work?

Smell – What smells do you associate with the person? Did they always wear a certain scent?

Taste – Do you associate any tastes with the person? Did they have a signature cake recipe that no one can match?

Step three: Edit

Reread your work, concentrating on the following:

  • Does the essay flow well? If not, re-order your paragraphs until it does.
  • Try to imagine you are reading about a stranger. Have you included enough details to make you feel like you know them? Do you know what they look like? Do you feel as though you understand their character and motivations?
  • Have you showed rather than told?
  • Of course, check your spelling, punctuation and grammar too. Have you used clichés? Too many adjectives?

If, at the end of the piece, you feel something towards the person, you have done a good job!

Culturally, there is a tonne of differences, traditions and just the way things work can vary from town to town, city to city.

College Essay How-to: Who is someone you admire?

For many students, one of the most stressful and confusing parts of the college application process can be answering the essay questions.

To help you prepare for answering the 5 common college application questions , we’ll break each of them down. We’ll also go over some useful tips for answering these questions effectively and making your application stand out.

The second of the five most common questions you’ll see on a college application is:

“Who is someone you admire?”

On the Common Application, a similar question is worded as, “Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you and describe that influence.”

Even if your college application has the simple phrasing of, “Who is someone you admire?” applicants should go further into detail when they answer the “why” part of that question by describing that influence.

And to elaborate on what I mean by this. . . .

It should only take you about 5-10 words to tell “who” you admire. Then, the other 150+ words should show the readers “why” you admire that person.

As the applicant, you have a lot of leeway here in terms of who you choose, and that means you shouldn’t always opt for the low-hanging fruit.

Wondering what I mean by that?

Opting for the low-hanging fruit on a college essay question means writing about safe people, including historical figures like Gandhi or Martin Luther King, or even your mom or dad.

These aren’t necessarily bad choices, but they’re considered safe options that every other student will likely choose as well.

If you want your college application to really stand out from thousands of others, don’t opt for low-hanging fruit on the essay questions. Instead, dig deeper when you’re choosing what or who to write about.

Now you might be asking, okay, like WHO?

To start thinking about who you should write about, ask yourself these questions:

  • What is a meaningful experience I can describe well? (And when I say “describe well,” I mean that you should be able to write about this experience in a way the reader feels they were there with you)
  • What happened in that meaningful experience?
  • Who was there with me during this meaningful experience?
  • What characteristic of a specific person present during this meaningful experience was most memorable?

While you think about your responses to these questions, please free-write your initial thoughts. (And yes, I do mean to handwrite. You can read more about that here .)

Your responses will start you on a path to writing a strong college application essay that stands out above the rest!

Who did you choose?

Next, I’ll cover the 3rd most common essay question:

#3. Why do you want to attend this college?

She is my role model and I aspire to be like her. I am lucky to have such a wonderful person in my life. She is not just my mother, but also my best friend, my guide, and my biggest supporter. Who vs Whom

Top 20 best books on american history, describe a person you admire essay sample, example.

Johannes Helmold

Since I am applying for the Master’s in Creative Writing program at Iowa University, I thought I should talk about my creative writing teacher Michael Dylan Welch. Besides being an award-winning poet, the Poet Laureate of Redmond two times, and a highly-anthologized author in popular poetry books, his main contribution to writing, I believe, is being an exceptional teacher to many aspiring poets.

After my father passed away, who was a poet and essayist, I had a few other writing teachers that helped me realize more of my potential, but I had no teachers like Mr. Welch. His selfless and tireless assistance in person and by email not only raised my level of skill in writing, but also made me realize my own altruistic self. After about two years of his lessons and reading his essays, I got invited to mentor other poets in a large online community of over 8000 people, specifically in haiku and tanka. For me, this proves how much impact Mr. Welch has been on my writing.

I met him a few times at haiku meetings in the Northwest, and knew him as a friend of my father. A few years later after meeting him those times, living in Ukraine, I emailed him about a poetry book I had written. It was made up of lyrical poetry and haiku—connecting the forms and styles by themes. The comments I received back from him shocked me: it seemed after years of writing haiku, I still had not grasped what a haiku truly was. He made me realize I had to start from the beginning, and he cleared the misconceptions I had about the genre.

In the coming months, we sent emails back and forth, answering any questions I had. I also read almost all his essays on haiku and related forms. Out of the blue, I got an acceptance from Frogpond journal, the publication of the Haiku Society of America—which is one of the top journals in the world for haiku, in any language. I was overjoyed and surprised: I had been trying to get published in Frogpond for many years without success, and after taking lessons from Mr. Welch, I had gotten accepted by them.

This acceptance into Frogpond gave me complete confidence in Mr. Welch’s teachings. It also made me realize that I had a talent in writing haiku, or at least had worked hard and humbly enough to get published in a top journal. I continued to take lessons from Mr. Welch regularly and started to submit to journals every week. After getting accepted by top journal after top journal in haiku and tanka, I feel now settled in being a published poet.

Mr. Welch never asked for payments for his lessons, nor did he ask for personal favors. He always got back to me promptly and gave all the information he could about my questions. When I had written my second book of haiku, Zen and Son , which is a compilation of my father’s haiku and my own haiku, Mr. Welch read through the full book and wrote countless constructive comments. After helping me edit my book, he also directed me to a publisher, Red Moon Press.

Through his selfless teaching, I got inspired to create an online journal named Haiku Commentary , which presents analysis on submitted haiku and related forms of poetry. I created it to spread the word of haiku and teach others what I have learned and continue to learn from Mr. Welch. No money is involved—it was created for the love of haiku and to educate others about it.

In the Master’s in Creative Writing program at Iowa University, I want to focus on the advancement and analysis of haiku in academic settings. My goal is to make haiku a serious and essential part of the American collegiate curriculum in creative writing classes and English courses. I hope with my master’s degree, I can be better equipped and better placed to make these fundamental changes in American education involving poetry.

Comprehensive Interview Guide: 60+ Professions Explored in Detail

Answers to “Who Inspires You?” (5 Examples)

By Biron Clark

Published: November 15, 2023

In a job interview, employers don’t just want to know you can do the job; they want to know about your life and interests.

So they ask interview questions like, “Who inspires you in your life?” or “Who is your greatest inspiration?”

And if you struggle to answer or give a response they don’t like, it could cost you the job.

Keep reading for tips on how to answer, “Who inspires you?” with example responses, mistakes to avoid, and more.

How to Answer the “Who Inspires You?” Interview Question

First of all, this is an incredibly open-ended interview question.

And while there are no wrong responses… some answers are better than others.

You could answer that your mother or father is your greatest inspiration. And that would be an okay answer.

But I recommend you look beyond a personal or family connection when answering, and consider the specific job you’re interviewing for.

Because the next question you’ll be asked, assuming you don’t expand on it in the first place, is “why?”

What did your mother, father, college teacher , or other personal connection do that was so inspiring? Was it their work ethic? Leadership skills?

Again, any of those answers are correct, but your answer will stand out and resonate more with the interviewer if you go into detail and ideally, tailor your answer to the traits required in the position you’re discussing.

Here’s a good example of how to answer this interview question by matching your inspiration to the job.

Imagine you’re looking for a career with a non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide aid to the homeless, the sick, and the poor.

Claiming Mother Teresa as your greatest inspiration would be a sensible answer to the question.

She devoted most of her life to charitable work, helping the homeless, sick, and poor.

Or, if you were interviewing for a leadership position, you could use someone past or present who showed exemplary leadership as your inspiration.

Just be sure to pick someone you really admire because there’s a good chance your body language will give you away if you’re lying.

And yes, don’t be surprised if the recruiter or manager has some skill at reading body language.

The point is, your answer not only provides some insight into the person you aspire to be, but also highlights the type of behavioral patterns and attitudes you admire and respect.

And that will translate into the type of person you would be on the job.

Here’s another example of thinking about the job when answering “Who inspired you in your life?”

Imagine you’re interviewing for an accounting position. The soft skills you’ll need are:

  • Problem-solving
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Critical thinking
  • Time management

You could use some famous accountants as your answer, perhaps someone like William Deloitte or William Cooper, the founders of Deloitte & Touche and Price Waterhouse Coopers respectively.

Or you could think outside the box and use as your inspiration someone who was or is well known for their critical thinking or problem-solving skills.

Of course, if you go this route, you need to clearly communicate your reasoning to your interviewer.

If you were to throw out Albert Einstein as your inspiration, that might not make sense to the person or people interviewing you because he’s a well-known physicist. But dig a little deeper and he’s also famous for being a problem solver and critical thinker, so you could talk about how he inspired you in those areas.

Throw an answer like that out and trust me, you’ll gain some serious credibility points.

As you can see, there’s no one “right” answer to this interview question. The key is to be able to explain why you choose the person and connect the dots between their story and your career and life goals.

Who Inspires You? Example Answers

Next, we’ll look at word-for-word who inspires you examples using people, past or present, who led a life that meshes with your career path and interests.

Example #1 for Who Inspires You: Mother Teresa

Someone who inspired me in my personal life and work is Mother Teresa. She dedicated her life to helping those less fortunate, and I’d like to achieve a similar story when I look back on my life. Also, I believe that her desire to help others made her a great leader, even though few would think of her that way. One of my favorite quotes by her is, “Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

This sample answer would be excellent if interviewing for a position at a charitable organization or other socially conscious organization.

It’s also a good answer for any role utilizing soft skills like leadership, empathy, emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills, and more.

No matter what your religious beliefs are (and I would recommend you don’t address them in the job interview), using this example answer with the reasons above would work in your favor and help you land any leadership role in an organization that values helping others.

Example #2 for Who Inspires You: Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein has inspired me in my career. His theories and vision enabled some of the technology we take for granted today, like GPS, lasers, atomic clocks, and much more. He also struggled with and had to overcome self-doubt, like so many people do. The fact that even he faced self-doubt is inspiring and reminds me to be persistent and believe in myself.

Albert Einstein would be a great choice for the “Who inspires you” interview question for anyone seeking a position in a company that requires creativity. For example:

  • Any kind of artist
  • Authors/writers
  • College art, drama, or music teachers
  • Editors, print or video
  • Fashion designer
  • Industrial designer
  • Landscape architects

Example #3 for Who Inspires You: Michael Jordan

I’ve been inspired by Michael Jordan. He was talented, but more importantly, he was willing to outwork the competition and focus intensely on his goals. He was relentless and never stopped pushing himself to improve. One excellent piece of advice he shared was to never forget the fundamentals. “The minute you get away from fundamentals, whether it’s proper technique, work ethic, or mental preparation, the bottom can fall out of your game, your schoolwork, your job, whatever you’re doing.”

This is an interview answer that you could use for virtually any type of job.

In the corporate world, there are fundamentals critical to your success. Each job position will have its own fundamentals, but Jordan’s advice is that whatever they are, keep at them.

He also didn’t let failure stop him, which you can also say was inspiring to you. Ironically, when he was in high school, he was disqualified from the varsity basketball team because he wasn’t tall enough or good enough.

What did he do? Well, he eventually grew but more importantly, he practiced until he was good enough.

All of the factors above make Michael Jordan an excellent choice for someone you find inspiring.

Note that you could also choose a more recent athlete such as Kobe Bryant if you prefer (who happened to have a similar mindset, competitiveness, and mental toughness to Michael Jordan).

Example #4 for Who Inspires You: William Deloitte

Since becoming an accountant , I’ve been inspired by William Deloitte, one of the fathers of accounting. I’m inspired by his innovation, leadership, and interpersonal skills. These traits allowed him to make powerful connections and accomplish a tremendous amount in his career. He was ambitious and aimed high, too, which are values that are important to me. He started his career at 15 and opened his own practice at 25. He went on to found one of the largest accounting firms in the world, so his story is a reminder to stay ambitious and motivated in life.

This is a good answer to “Who inspires you?” if interviewing for any position in accounting or bookkeeping.

Remember, it’s always a good idea to consider the job you’re discussing when you answer this interview question.

Example #5 for Who Inspires You: Your Father

My father is someone who inspired me throughout life and is the reason I got into the marketing industry. When he was 19, he started a small local marketing firm and grew it to the point of having 200 clients throughout the state. He recognized that building strong relationships is just as important as being competent in your work, and he became excellent at both through consistent effort. He was also an inspiration because nobody told him to go down the marketing route, and he didn’t study marketing in school. Instead, he read local newspapers, saw opportunities to help businesses market themselves better in the local community, and went door-to-door to get his first clients.

As you can see, it’s okay to say a personal connection or family member inspired you.

But if choosing friends, parents, or other relatives/personal connections, you need to be ready to show something exceptional they did and exactly how that was an inspiration in your life and career. Otherwise, choose someone else as your inspirational figure.

Now you have 5 examples to the question, “Who inspires you?”

I’ve mentioned a few times that there are no wrong answers to this interview question. But there are some mistakes you should avoid when giving your interview answer…

Mistakes to Avoid When Answering “Who Inspires You?”

The #1 mistake to avoid when saying who inspires you in an interview:

If there’s anything we’ve learned in the last several years, it’s that there are some topics and people who are completely polarizing. Many people are one hundred percent for or against something or someone.

Why does that matter?

Because you have no idea where the person who’s interviewing you stands on the subject. And if you voice a strong like or dislike contrary to theirs, that could count against you.

So it’s best to stay away from anyone or anything highly controversial or polarizing, such as most political figures or issues.

Further mistakes to avoid:

  • If you do choose a famous person, make sure they really are someone you admire and respect. Otherwise you won’t sound convincing.
  • Don’t give an answer that’s more than 60-90 seconds. Be selective in sharing why someone has inspired you and just choose a few key points to share. You don’t need to share every detail you’ve read and researched about this person, and if the interviewer wants to hear more, they’ll ask.
  • Don’t ever answer without having a reason ready. If you choose your mother, father, a friend, or anyone related to you, be sure to have an appropriate reason.

8 Types of People You Can Say Inspired You

To help you gather more ideas for potential answers to “Who inspired you in your life?” here are some general types of people you can mention as your inspiration.

  • Historical figures
  • Mentors/coaches
  • Noteworthy people in your community
  • Parents, family, and friends

If you follow the steps and sample answers above, you’ll be ready to answer “Who inspires you?” in your next interview.

If you can’t think of someone to name and the examples above don’t work for you, don’t panic.

Google is your friend for coming up with more answers and people you find inspiring.

If you’re not sure what soft skills and traits are most important for the position your interview is for, you can do a search on something like “soft skills needed for…” and just fill in either the field or role you’re hoping to get hired for.

Also, look at the job description before your interview. Notice which skills and traits are mentioned first and/or most often.

Then, you can try searching for someone motivational that matches the soft skills required for the job. Try something like a search for “examples of people with a good work ethic.”

This preparation will help you wow the interviewer so you can land the job.

Writing an essay about someone is not the easiest subject to write. One should write it in such a way that it talks of a person or two while at the same time it relates to how it applies to his or her opinion on a certain topic.

The good news is we are here to empower you with the correct skill.  That is whether it is writing an essay of gratitude towards a family member. Or, someone who helped you get through school. And lastly, an influential figure in the world that inspired who you are today. Let’s get started.

essay about who you admire

Why are some People a Good Topic for an Essay

1. personal relations         .

Whatever the case, the more information you have about the relationship, the better your essay will be.

writing about my family

You may write about the relationship between you and the person you are writing about. Maybe it is a romantic relationship, a business relationship, or a friendship. Maybe it’s a family member , or maybe you have never met this person.

You should also try to explain what makes this person stand out from others in their field, or their life (or both): how do they compare to other people? What makes them so special?

2. Your Experience with them

Some people are just so fascinating that you could write a whole essay about them. Others are just average, or boring, and make for a poor essay topic. You need to be able to look at life objectively and see what makes good writing material and what does not.

Start by developing an idea about the person you want to write about — maybe it is someone you know well, or maybe it is someone you do not know very well but have observed from afar. The more details you can observe about a person, the better “material” they will be for your essay.

3. Their Achievements

You can write an essay about someone who has had a positive impact on your life. Also, you can use this essay as an opportunity to reflect on how that person has helped you grow and mature as a person.

Some people may have trouble writing about themselves.  So, if you know someone who fits that description, you could offer to write the essay for them. This is also a great opportunity for adults to reminisce about their childhood, and think about all of the people who helped them get where they are today.

If you choose to write about someone from your childhood, keep in mind that it’s a good idea to do some research on that person before starting your essay. As such, you can get a better sense of who they are and what makes them unique.

success and fails

4. Their Failures

The best essays often feature about topics that may initially seem negative. Such include topics as coping with loss, enduring a difficult challenge, hoping for a better future, or dealing with the darker aspects of life.

In your essay, you must present yourself as someone who loves to learn, can think critically, and has a passion for things—anything.

5. Their Jobs

When you write a profile essay about someone with an interesting job, you can focus on what they do, how they got into it, and why they like the job. You can also focus on how they help others and how their job makes them feel.

Those people whose jobs serve the general public in some fashion are good candidates for profile essays. This includes doctors, nurses, teachers, police officers, and firemen, but also mechanics, janitors, housekeepers, and even waitresses.

The reason is that these people are doing something that affects at least a few of us daily. They have chosen a career or profession that most of us will need at one time or another in our lives.

6. Famous People or Stars

The first thing to think about when choosing a person to write about is why they are relevant to your course or subject. For example, writing about the historical figures of World War 2 is likely a good choice if you are in a history class, but it would not fit well in a biology class.

some famous people

Once you find someone who fits into the curriculum, then you need to find someone who is interesting enough that many people will want to read what you wrote about them.

This means that most famous people are good choices because they have been written about so much that there is a lot of research available on their lives and deeds.

However, if you know something interesting about an obscure person, then they can also be good choices.

How to Write an Essay about Someone

Explain the person you are writing about.

Choose someone who you have interests in. It makes it easy for you to get more material on the subject since you love talking about the person and sharing their stories with other people. The person should be someone whose actions and beliefs have always been so informative to you, and they influence what you do and how you think.

a person's attributes

The person should be someone who has had a significant influence on your life.

If you can’t meet the person, then research as much as possible about them before writing the essay. Start by asking questions from people who know them well.

Craft Your Thesis about the Person

Decide on your thesis statement. A thesis statement is a one- to two-sentence statement that presents the main idea and makes an assertion about your issue. You may have a longer thesis for much longer essays, but one to two sentences is a good general guideline.

And, remember, in an argumentative essay , the assertion you present in your thesis is going to be particularly important. When you make your assertion in your thesis, it should be clear and direct.

If your assertion is going to be controversial from some quarters, you want to make sure that it’s something that you can support with the evidence that you’ve included in your essay.

Write your arguments about him/her

Writing an essay about someone requires one to write about someone who you probably know or you have a strong feeling about or inspire you.

The feelings that you have towards such a person are the ones that will color your observation. Note that your observation should be specific like describing the physical features of the person, their personality, character, or any other aspect about them.

Cite and reference

When writing an essay about someone, you need to cite and reference properly . This shows your tutor that you have a good understanding of academic writing and can use the proper methods when citing and referencing sources.

What do you think about the person?

The person described in the essay should be a strong, brave, and intelligent person.

Other people’s side

He has a reputation as an author that is more than a bit exaggerated. He does write well and he does write quickly (most people can’t do both), but he’s no Hemingway or Orwell. His work is usually quite good, though, and he certainly knows his subject matter.

The person is very humble and nice to talk with. She can handle pressure. She is good at her work and very punctual.

Sample Descriptive Essay About A Person You Admire

  • Views 324951
  • Author Abigal W.

When asked about the person I admire in the universe, I do not require to look at celebrities or any other big influential names in society. When it comes to me, the person I admire most in the world is my mother. We all have people whom we consider to be highly inspirational and influential to look upon, and in my case, my mother is an excellent example of these characters. She is an extraordinary person in my life because of her enduring strength that I dearly admire, and she is also kind as well as supportive.

One thing I most admire about my mother for is her strength, which appears to be resistant throughout hard times. My mother is a single mother, and she has managed to raise three children all by herself, providing us with a good life and education, while still balancing work. For instance, when my brother and I cleared high school, only one of us hoped to join college because of our financial situation, but she worked two jobs to ensure that we enrolled in college. Single mothers across the globe face financial instability where they are forced to engage in other strategies to extend income to take care of their family (West et al. 359). I hold great admiration for my mother because of her determination, how she never backs down, and the way she stands up for what she believes in no matter the hardships that come along.

My mother has a striking appearance, but behind this, she is very alluring, admirable, and kind. At first, one can conclude that she is a blunt and cold person because of her quiet nature, but after knowing her, she turns out to be a friendly, warm-hearted, gentle, and generous person. My mother has been a dedicated individual in the society through volunteering in church during weekends and holidays as well as helping in the local homeless shelters. Kindness is crucial and healthy since one takes pride in caring for others since they need caring, and it gives people a pleasant feeling (Adamu par. 6). Thanks to my mother, I have grown to be a kind-hearted and deeply-caring person since I believe that it's upon me to help those in need whenever I am capable.

I am lucky to have a mother who always supports me no matter my misgivings. No matter the activity I am in or the decision I make, my mother is still there for me to give me advice and encouragement, but at the end of the day, she is at all times by my side. I had a difficult time adapting to my first year in high school, and I almost quit, but my mum listened to my grievances, and with her support, I managed to finish high school. Supportive behavior is crucial for individual well-being, especially when it comes to emotional support, where a person can be able to relieve distress from a challenge (MacGeorge and Van Swol 7). My mother's supportive character has given me the strength to endure a lot of challenging situations in life as well as learn a lot in what life has to offer.

Special people like my mother exist to make our lives better and to mold us to become a better version of ourselves. My mother is a strong spirited person, kind-hearted, has unbreakable strength and very supportive. Over the years, I have learned a lot through her character and thoughts, which have molded me to the caring, decent, and brilliant person I am today. The people around us turn out to be the best role models.

Essay On Writie About A Person Who You Admire

ORDER PAPER LIKE THIS

As soon as I found out the topic for this essay I immediately knew who I would be writing about. There are a lot of respectable people around me who deserve admiration. However, there is one person who has always amazed me with her personality. My friend Victoria is really a role model for me because she embodies all the features that in my opinion are important in life. I am very thankful to her for teaching me so many things that changed my life. The particular two streaks that initially made me look up to her and still astonish me are her incredible purposefulness and optimism.

We all want to be successful in this life but we do not always realize how much it takes to get to the point where we want to be. I have always had ambitions and goals in life but sometimes it gets really hard to achieve what you want when there are so many obstacles in your way. In this respect my friend Victoria is the most persistent and hardworking person I have ever known. She always achieves her goals though it is not easy at times. Once she told me her favorite quote and those words literally changed my life. “Shoot for the stars so if you fail you can land on a cloud.” I realized that my biggest problem in achieving my goals was my fear of failure. My friend showed me that we have to stay persistent and dedicated even when life gives us hard times. Now I understand that everything that is worthwhile does not come easy and you have to put your soul, your energy and a lot of work into getting it. But even if you fail it cannot be considered a real failure because you receive experiences and lessons from life. The worst thing you can do is never try or give up because of the fear of problems you might encounter.

But even the most hardworking and enthusiastic people still have a lot of difficult moments in life. In my opinion the significance of every problem is determined only by the way you treat it. My friend accepts all the difficulties with a lot of optimism. She always says that when you stop worrying about a problem it does not seem that challenging anymore and you are able to find a solution easily. And this concept worked for me too. I was often scared of the complications I encountered but it has never occurred to me that once you let it go it will be much easier to find the right decision. Victoria has shown to me that worrying is stupid and it never brings any positive results.

My friend is not a famous person she is just an ordinary girl but her outstanding personal features and her attitude towards life make her the perfect example to follow for me. She has given me a lot of lessons about life and I always take them into consideration not only because she is older and more mature but also because I can see from her example that the things she advises do work. I am very happy I got a chance to meet such an incredible person. They say that every person you meet is going to change your life in some way. Meeting Victoria turned my life upside down and made me look at things from a completely different angle.

O.J Simpson's complicated legacy; Ukraine passes new draft law

Good morning. You're reading the Up First newsletter. Subscribe here to get it delivered to your inbox, and listen to the Up First podcast for all the news you need to start your day.

Today's top stories

Orenthal James Simpson, known as O.J., died yesterday at 76 after a battle with cancer. Before his infamy in the so-called "trial of the century " of the murder of his ex-wife and her friend, Simpson was a football star and Hollywood actor.

  • NPR's Mandalit del Barco covered his murder trial in Los Angeles in the '90s.  "Audiences loved him," she tells  Up First . "And that's why it was  so shocking what came next ." Del Barco says that the reaction to the verdict back then was somewhat divided along racial lines. Some White Angelenos she spoke to were outraged. But some Black Angelenos felt conflicted, saying that whether or not Simpson committed the murder, for once, justice was on the side of a Black man.

After months of deliberation, Ukraine's parliament yesterday passed a law to mobilize hundreds of thousands of new soldiers. Under the new law, military-age men are required to carry draft registration documents with them at all times, making it easier for the government to find conscripts. In one controversial move, the law also allows convicts — previously banned from the military — to serve in return for a suspended sentence. Current Ukrainian soldiers are exhausted, as Russian troops are now on the offensive, two years into its full-scale invasion.

  • NPR's Joanna Kakissis speaks with soldiers' families, who tell her they're most upset about "long deployments with no end."  Some Ukrainian soldiers have been on the front line since the invasion began, with some fighting while injured. Kakissis says the new law  doesn't address long deployments , but officials are considering a separate law on the issue.

Prestigious cancer research institute has retracted 7 studies amid controversy over errors

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

Seven studies from researchers at the prestigious Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have been retracted over the last two months after a scientist blogger alleged that images used in them had been manipulated or duplicated.

The retractions are the latest development in a monthslong controversy around research at the Boston-based institute, which is a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

The issue came to light after Sholto David, a microbiologist and volunteer science sleuth based in Wales, published a scathing post on his blog in January, alleging errors and manipulations of images across dozens of papers produced primarily by Dana-Farber researchers . The institute acknowledged errors and subsequently announced that it had requested six studies to be retracted and asked for corrections in 31 more papers. Dana-Farber also said, however, that a review process for errors had been underway before David’s post.

Now, at least one more study has been retracted than Dana-Farber initially indicated, and David said he has discovered an additional 30 studies from authors affiliated with the institute that he believes contain errors or image manipulations and therefore deserve scrutiny.

The episode has imperiled the reputation of a major cancer research institute and raised questions about one high-profile researcher there, Kenneth Anderson, who is a senior author on six of the seven retracted studies.

Anderson is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and the director of the Jerome Lipper Multiple Myeloma Center at Dana-Farber. He did not respond to multiple emails or voicemails requesting comment.

The retractions and new allegations add to a larger, ongoing debate in science about how to protect scientific integrity and reduce the incentives that could lead to misconduct or unintentional mistakes in research.

The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has moved relatively swiftly to seek retractions and corrections.

“Dana-Farber is deeply committed to a culture of accountability and integrity, and as an academic research and clinical care organization we also prioritize transparency,” Dr. Barrett Rollins, the institute’s integrity research officer, said in a statement. “However, we are bound by federal regulations that apply to all academic medical centers funded by the National Institutes of Health among other federal agencies. Therefore, we cannot share details of internal review processes and will not comment on personnel issues.”

The retracted studies were originally published in two journals: One in the Journal of Immunology and six in Cancer Research. Six of the seven focused on multiple myeloma, a form of cancer that develops in plasma cells. Retraction notices indicate that Anderson agreed to the retractions of the papers he authored.

Elisabeth Bik, a microbiologist and longtime image sleuth, reviewed several of the papers’ retraction statements and scientific images for NBC News and said the errors were serious.

“The ones I’m looking at all have duplicated elements in the photos, where the photo itself has been manipulated,” she said, adding that these elements were “signs of misconduct.”

Dr.  John Chute, who directs the division of hematology and cellular therapy at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and has contributed to studies about multiple myeloma, said the papers were produced by pioneers in the field, including Anderson.

“These are people I admire and respect,” he said. “Those were all high-impact papers, meaning they’re highly read and highly cited. By definition, they have had a broad impact on the field.”

Chute said he did not know the authors personally but had followed their work for a long time.

“Those investigators are some of the leading people in the field of myeloma research and they have paved the way in terms of understanding our biology of the disease,” he said. “The papers they publish lead to all kinds of additional work in that direction. People follow those leads and industry pays attention to that stuff and drug development follows.”

The retractions offer additional evidence for what some science sleuths have been saying for years: The more you look for errors or image manipulation, the more you might find, even at the top levels of science.

Scientific images in papers are typically used to present evidence of an experiment’s results. Commonly, they show cells or mice; other types of images show key findings like western blots — a laboratory method that identifies proteins — or bands of separated DNA molecules in gels.

Science sleuths sometimes examine these images for irregular patterns that could indicate errors, duplications or manipulations. Some artificial intelligence companies are training computers to spot these kinds of problems, as well.

Duplicated images could be a sign of sloppy lab work or data practices. Manipulated images — in which a researcher has modified an image heavily with photo editing tools — could indicate that images have been exaggerated, enhanced or altered in an unethical way that could change how other scientists interpret a study’s findings or scientific meaning.

Top scientists at big research institutions often run sprawling laboratories with lots of junior scientists. Critics of science research and publishing systems allege that a lack of opportunities for young scientists, limited oversight and pressure to publish splashy papers that can advance careers could incentivize misconduct.

These critics, along with many science sleuths, allege that errors or sloppiness are too common , that research organizations and authors often ignore concerns when they’re identified, and that the path from complaint to correction is sluggish.

“When you look at the amount of retractions and poor peer review in research today, the question is, what has happened to the quality standards we used to think existed in research?” said Nick Steneck, an emeritus professor at the University of Michigan and an expert on science integrity.

David told NBC News that he had shared some, but not all, of his concerns about additional image issues with Dana-Farber. He added that he had not identified any problems in four of the seven studies that have been retracted.

“It’s good they’ve picked up stuff that wasn’t in the list,” he said.

NBC News requested an updated tally of retractions and corrections, but Ellen Berlin, a spokeswoman for Dana-Farber, declined to provide a new list. She said that the numbers could shift and that the institute did not have control over the form, format or timing of corrections.

“Any tally we give you today might be different tomorrow and will likely be different a week from now or a month from now,” Berlin said. “The point of sharing numbers with the public weeks ago was to make clear to the public that Dana-Farber had taken swift and decisive action with regard to the articles for which a Dana-Farber faculty member was primary author.”

She added that Dana-Farber was encouraging journals to correct the scientific record as promptly as possible.

Bik said it was unusual to see a highly regarded U.S. institution have multiple papers retracted.

“I don’t think I’ve seen many of those,” she said. “In this case, there was a lot of public attention to it and it seems like they’re responding very quickly. It’s unusual, but how it should be.”

Students Are Likely Writing Millions of Papers With AI

Illustration of four hands holding pencils that are connected to a central brain

Students have submitted more than 22 million papers that may have used generative AI in the past year, new data released by plagiarism detection company Turnitin shows.

A year ago, Turnitin rolled out an AI writing detection tool that was trained on its trove of papers written by students as well as other AI-generated texts. Since then, more than 200 million papers have been reviewed by the detector, predominantly written by high school and college students. Turnitin found that 11 percent may contain AI-written language in 20 percent of its content, with 3 percent of the total papers reviewed getting flagged for having 80 percent or more AI writing. (Turnitin is owned by Advance, which also owns Condé Nast, publisher of WIRED.) Turnitin says its detector has a false positive rate of less than 1 percent when analyzing full documents.

ChatGPT’s launch was met with knee-jerk fears that the English class essay would die . The chatbot can synthesize information and distill it near-instantly—but that doesn’t mean it always gets it right. Generative AI has been known to hallucinate , creating its own facts and citing academic references that don’t actually exist. Generative AI chatbots have also been caught spitting out biased text on gender and race . Despite those flaws, students have used chatbots for research, organizing ideas, and as a ghostwriter . Traces of chatbots have even been found in peer-reviewed, published academic writing .

Teachers understandably want to hold students accountable for using generative AI without permission or disclosure. But that requires a reliable way to prove AI was used in a given assignment. Instructors have tried at times to find their own solutions to detecting AI in writing, using messy, untested methods to enforce rules , and distressing students. Further complicating the issue, some teachers are even using generative AI in their grading processes.

Detecting the use of gen AI is tricky. It’s not as easy as flagging plagiarism, because generated text is still original text. Plus, there’s nuance to how students use gen AI; some may ask chatbots to write their papers for them in large chunks or in full, while others may use the tools as an aid or a brainstorm partner.

Students also aren't tempted by only ChatGPT and similar large language models. So-called word spinners are another type of AI software that rewrites text, and may make it less obvious to a teacher that work was plagiarized or generated by AI. Turnitin’s AI detector has also been updated to detect word spinners, says Annie Chechitelli, the company’s chief product officer. It can also flag work that was rewritten by services like spell checker Grammarly, which now has its own generative AI tool . As familiar software increasingly adds generative AI components, what students can and can’t use becomes more muddled.

Detection tools themselves have a risk of bias. English language learners may be more likely to set them off; a 2023 study found a 61.3 percent false positive rate when evaluating Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exams with seven different AI detectors. The study did not examine Turnitin’s version. The company says it has trained its detector on writing from English language learners as well as native English speakers. A study published in October found that Turnitin was among the most accurate of 16 AI language detectors in a test that had the tool examine undergraduate papers and AI-generated papers.

Change Healthcare Faces Another Ransomware Threat&-and It Looks Credible

Schools that use Turnitin had access to the AI detection software for a free pilot period, which ended at the start of this year. Chechitelli says a majority of the service’s clients have opted to purchase the AI detection. But the risks of false positives and bias against English learners have led some universities to ditch the tools for now. Montclair State University in New Jersey announced in November that it would pause use of Turnitin’s AI detector. Vanderbilt University and Northwestern University did the same last summer.

“This is hard. I understand why people want a tool,” says Emily Isaacs, executive director of the Office of Faculty Excellence at Montclair State. But Isaacs says the university is concerned about potentially biased results from AI detectors, as well as the fact that the tools can’t provide confirmation the way they can with plagiarism. Plus, Montclair State doesn’t want to put a blanket ban on AI, which will have some place in academia. With time and more trust in the tools, the policies could change. “It’s not a forever decision, it’s a now decision,” Isaacs says.

Chechitelli says the Turnitin tool shouldn’t be the only consideration in passing or failing a student. Instead, it’s a chance for teachers to start conversations with students that touch on all of the nuance in using generative AI. “People don’t really know where that line should be,” she says.

Francis Collins: Why I’m going public with my prostate cancer diagnosis

I served medical research. now it’s serving me. and i don’t want to waste time..

Over my 40 years as a physician-scientist, I’ve had the privilege of advising many patients facing serious medical diagnoses. I’ve seen them go through the excruciating experience of waiting for the results of a critical blood test, biopsy or scan that could dramatically affect their future hopes and dreams.

But this time, I was the one lying in the PET scanner as it searched for possible evidence of spread of my aggressive prostate cancer . I spent those 30 minutes in quiet prayer. If that cancer had already spread to my lymph nodes, bones, lungs or brain, it could still be treated — but it would no longer be curable.

Why am I going public about this cancer that many men are uncomfortable talking about? Because I want to lift the veil and share lifesaving information, and I want all men to benefit from the medical research to which I’ve devoted my career and that is now guiding my care.

Five years before that fateful PET scan, my doctor had noted a slow rise in my PSA, the blood test for prostate-specific antigen. To contribute to knowledge and receive expert care, I enrolled in a clinical trial at the National Institutes of Health, the agency I led from 2009 through late 2021.

At first, there wasn’t much to worry about — targeted biopsies identified a slow-growing grade of prostate cancer that doesn’t require treatment and can be tracked via regular checkups, referred to as “active surveillance.” This initial diagnosis was not particularly surprising. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the United States, and about 40 percent of men over age 65 — I’m 73 — have low-grade prostate cancer . Many of them never know it, and very few of them develop advanced disease.

Why am I going public about this cancer that many men are uncomfortable talking about? Because I want to lift the veil and share lifesaving information.

But in my case, things took a turn about a month ago when my PSA rose sharply to 22 — normal at my age is less than 5. An MRI scan showed that the tumor had significantly enlarged and might have even breached the capsule that surrounds the prostate, posing a significant risk that the cancer cells might have spread to other parts of the body.

New biopsies taken from the mass showed transformation into a much more aggressive cancer. When I heard the diagnosis was now a 9 on a cancer-grading scale that goes only to 10, I knew that everything had changed.

Thus, that PET scan, which was ordered to determine if the cancer had spread beyond the prostate, carried high significance. Would a cure still be possible, or would it be time to get my affairs in order? A few hours later, when my doctors showed me the scan results, I felt a rush of profound relief and gratitude. There was no detectable evidence of cancer outside of the primary tumor.

Later this month, I will undergo a radical prostatectomy — a procedure that will remove my entire prostate gland. This will be part of the same NIH research protocol — I want as much information as possible to be learned from my case, to help others in the future.

While there are no guarantees, my doctors believe I have a high likelihood of being cured by the surgery.

My situation is far better than my father’s when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer four decades ago. He was about the same age that I am now, but it wasn’t possible back then to assess how advanced the cancer might be. He was treated with a hormonal therapy that might not have been necessary and had a significant negative impact on his quality of life.

Because of research supported by NIH, along with highly effective collaborations with the private sector, prostate cancer can now be treated with individualized precision and improved outcomes.

As in my case, high-resolution MRI scans can now be used to delineate the precise location of a tumor. When combined with real-time ultrasound, this allows pinpoint targeting of the prostate biopsies. My surgeon will be assisted by a sophisticated robot named for Leonardo da Vinci that employs a less invasive surgical approach than previous techniques, requiring just a few small incisions.

Advances in clinical treatments have been informed by large-scale, rigorously designed trials that have assessed the risks and benefits and were possible because of the willingness of cancer patients to enroll in such trials.

I feel compelled to tell this story openly. I hope it helps someone. I don’t want to waste time.

If my cancer recurs, the DNA analysis that has been carried out on my tumor will guide the precise choice of therapies. As a researcher who had the privilege of leading the Human Genome Project , it is truly gratifying to see how these advances in genomics have transformed the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

I want all men to have the same opportunity that I did. Prostate cancer is still the No. 2 killer of men. I want the goals of the Cancer Moonshot to be met — to end cancer as we know it. Early detection really matters, and when combined with active surveillance can identify the risky cancers like mine, and leave the rest alone. The five-year relative survival rate for prostate cancer is 97 percent, according to the American Cancer Society , but it’s only 34 percent if the cancer has spread to distant areas of the body.

But lack of information and confusion about the best approach to prostate cancer screening have impeded progress. Currently, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that all men age 55 to 69 discuss PSA screening with their primary-care physician, but it recommends against starting PSA screening after age 70.

Other groups, like the American Urological Association , suggest that screening should start earlier, especially for men with a family history — like me — and for African American men, who have a higher risk of prostate cancer. But these recommendations are not consistently being followed.

Our health-care system is afflicted with health inequities. For example, the image-guided biopsies are not available everywhere and to everyone. Finally, many men are fearful of the surgical approach to prostate cancer because of the risk of incontinence and impotence, but advances in surgical techniques have made those outcomes considerably less troublesome than in the past. Similarly, the alternative therapeutic approaches of radiation and hormonal therapy have seen significant advances.

A little over a year ago, while I was praying for a dying friend, I had the experience of receiving a clear and unmistakable message. This has almost never happened to me. It was just this: “Don’t waste your time, you may not have much left.” Gulp.

Having now received a diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer and feeling grateful for all the ways I have benefited from research advances, I feel compelled to tell this story openly. I hope it helps someone. I don’t want to waste time.

Francis S. Collins served as director of the National Institutes of Health from 2009 to 2021 and as director of the National Human Genome Research Institute at NIH from 1993 to 2008. He is a physician-geneticist and leads a White House initiative to eliminate hepatitis C in the United States, while also continuing to pursue his research interests as a distinguished NIH investigator.

Wordplay, The CROSSWORD COLUMN

Savings Plan

John Rippe and Jeff Chen collaborate on a puzzle with a big heart.

By Caitlin Lovinger

Jump to: Tricky Clues | Today’s Theme

SUNDAY PUZZLE — In his print introduction to this grid, Joel Fagliano writes: “John Rippe, of Silver Spring, Md., works in the Office of Protected Resources at the National Marine Fisheries Service. Jeff Chen, of Seattle, is a writer and prolific crossword collaborator. John specifically focuses on the 112-/114-Across in his work, and this puzzle is a tribute to its impact.”

We frequently get great Sunday puzzles with historical and educational angles, but I can’t remember the last time I found myself being emotionally moved by a theme. It’s the topic, of course, which is near and dear to me. But I’m also affected by the origins of the puzzle; it was a passion project and a first crossword construction for Mr. Rippe.

A biologist at NOAA’s Fisheries Service, Mr. Rippe writes of his job helping to enforce the Endangered Species Act (more on that later): “Our agency, together with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is responsible for implementing the act to protect, conserve and recover more than 1,500 plant and animal species that are listed as threatened or endangered under the act. I personally work on the team that is responsible for determining which marine and anadromous species meet the requirements to be listed as threatened or endangered under the act, and for those species that are listed, we work to develop plans and regulations to facilitate their recovery.”

Today’s Theme

There are seven examples of today’s theme set; each is presented as a pair of down entries in the same column, at 2-/56-, 9-/70-, 16-/64-, 19-/74-, 21-/75-, 36-/96- and 40-/101-Down. The upper entry in each pair contains a smattering of circled squares, and its clue begins with “BEFORE:”; the lower entry in each pair has a clue that starts with “AFTER:”.

I did not find any of the upper clues simple. But one thing about theme entries in the down entries, when you solve a crossword the ordinary way, starting with the across clue set, is that you’re going to have some letters in place to help you along. The first theme entry I completely filled in was 36-Down, “BEFORE: Begin operating effectively,” which solves to GE T I N GE A R . The circled letters, I realized, spell TIGER.

I soon picked up on 19-Down as well. “BEFORE: Rear-end, e.g.,” is C R AS H IN T O ; in this case, the circled letters contain another creature, a RHINO. That is the case for all the upper entries, in fact.

I stumbled on this theme’s trick at 96-Down. “AFTER: Actress Rowlands” has to be GENA; this entry sits just below GE T I N GE A R at 36-Across. Note that the uncircled letters in the upper entry are G-E-N-A, meaning that once the TIGER in GE T I N GE A R disappears, you’re left with GENA. Sure enough, the clue for 74-Down — which sits right below 19-Down, C R AS H IN T O — is “AFTER: Like some statues,” which solves to CAST, and C-A-S-T is what remains after the RHINO vanishes.

Once you know the relationship between the two theme clues in each column, you can use letters from each to guess the other entry and the animal that runs in the circled letters. When you make that connection, your solve will speed up. But take a moment to appreciate what’s happening: Each animal disappears as you move through its pair of theme clues.

The animals also have something in common that is explained by this puzzle’s revealer, which spans two entries at 112- and 114-Across. The “conservation law that celebrated its 50th anniversary in December 2023” is the ENDANGERED / SPECIES ACT, which has proved to be both resilient and effective in preventing hundreds of vulnerable species , including every animal running through the upper theme entries, from going extinct. As today’s title suggests, you might call it a critical “savings plan” for the whole planet.

Tricky Clues

21A. This is sweet wordplay. The “Results of an iron deficiency?” in this puzzle are CREASES, wrinkles in clothes that need to be pressed.

30A/40A. These are two names that have appeared in the crossword for decades, almost always clued the same way. Here, they get fresh trivia questions, neither of which I recognized. At 30A, “Lydic of ‘The Daily Show’” is DESI, a comedian; this entry has been clued as “Lucille’s hubby” or some variation of it since 1953. 40A, the “App used to track fertility” is MIRA, which was a “Star in Cetus” starting in 1943 and for decades after that — until Mira Sorvino came along.

74A. “A bull market it is not!” refers to an old idiom that has to do with livestock, not the stock market. The answer is a fragile place that is often figuratively beset by bulls: a CHINA SHOP.

107A. The solution to this clue surprised me: A “Tiny ‘canvas’ on which to paint” in this puzzle is a TOENAIL. Nail art is big business, though; you can get jewels and glitter with your pedicure, these days.

88D. “Philip II of ____, father of Alexander the Great,” ruled much of classical Greece and built a palace in MACEDON, or Macedonia.

93D. This entry appears in the crossword every so often and seems to have attained some kind of classic status . “‘The Future of Law Enforcement,’ according to a 1987 movie,” refers to ROBOCOP.

Constructor Notes

John Rippe : Jeff and I brainstormed several different approaches to represent the role of the Endangered Species Act in protecting and recovering species that are at risk of extinction. I had initially approached Jeff with the vague idea of constructing an endangered-species-themed puzzle and, with his brilliance and creativity, we came up with the vanishing effect as a nice way to simulate a species going extinct. However, it was important to me that the puzzle highlighted the overwhelming success of the act in preventing that “vanishing” from occurring. Since its passage, the act has prevented extinction for over 99 percent of the species that have been listed as threatened or endangered, including a number of species that have been removed from the list because of their recovery, such as the bald eagle, the American alligator and the brown pelican, and many others that are showing positive signs toward recovery. After playing with the wording of the revealer clues a bit, we landed on the final version of the puzzle. It highlights seven taxa, each comprising one or more species that are currently listed as threatened or endangered under the act. The disappearance of the creatures represented by the paired BEFORE and AFTER entries illustrates a frightening prospect that the Endangered Species Act is in place to prevent. More than anything, I hope that this puzzle is a fun way for people to appreciate and celebrate the incredible impact of the Endangered Species Act over the past 50 years and to look forward to a promising future of species recovery in the next 50 years. Jeff Chen : It was a pleasure working with John on this one. I admire people doing great things with their lives, and the efforts of NOAA are so admirable.
