I belong to a farmer’s family. After settling down in the metro cities, I have noticed my family craving to spare their time for Mother Nature. Having a family background with an ample number of agricultural jobholders, I decided to devise a small garden of my own. Earlier in my penthouse, I decided to create a small rooftop garden due to lack of space. This is how gardening helped me release the amplitude amount of endorphins in my whole family after a stressful day. Gardening is the most accessible and manageable task for a human being. All it requires is enough motivation for a better yield. It is a decampment towards the serenity and beauty of nature with loads of unadulterated indulgence. Gardening has always helped me look towards a better future. It has maintained me to stay submerged with my fondness for plants and blossoms. It is a  form of recreational activity after my school hours. Springing from botanical gardens to every miniature backyard, I have visited all of them. Attending several gardens motivates me to produce a surplus of plants in my garden.

What do I do for my hobby gardening?

Soil is a requirement because it constitutes a certain amount of organisms that help in the conversion of plant nutrients from the putrefied subject. To harvest a beautiful garden, healthy soil is the most important necessity. In my rooftop gardens, I have utilized an inadequate amount of space to grow flowering plants and a few creepers and climbers for my mother’s kitchen. Gardening requires an ample amount of attention and time. Starting from the preparation of the soil to the composting till the blossoms are achieved, everything requires dedication. In the beginning, I started with a proper layout for an inadequate stretch. Then I had to pick among the favored and accessible varieties to start with. Obtaining good seeded plants and accessible supplies available at my home, I started my gardening tenure. To help my mom’s kitchen I even planted a few vegetable seeds such as bitter gourd, lemon, chilies, tomatoes, and a few leafy vegetables. I affirmed to keep my plants away from the weeds and pests. I took assistance from my uncle with organic manures and compost to get a better yield and prettier blossoms for every morning to wake up to. I have used unused plastic bottles to grow creepers and a few flowering and herb plants to create an aesthetic outlook for my garden. Plants such as basil, money plants, rosemary, spinach, and much more hanging houseleeks were grown from the waste bottles. The proper amount of sun and shade are required as it may inhibit adequate plant growth. Butterflies, honey bees, flower beetles are a regular visitor to my garden. A few of my houseplants are ferns, dracaena, philodendron, and aglaonema. The vegetables I have grown are placed in a sunny spot, and there’s an ample amount of water supply adjacent to it. These vegetables are used in our kitchen daily.

The Benefits – Why Is Gardening A Great Hobby?

There are many benefits of choosing gardening as a hobby. Here are some of the most important benefits of choosing gardening as a hobby:

Plants Clean The Air

You already know that trees filter CO2 out of the air. Plants exchange CO2 for oxygen. In fact, they absorb CO2 and exchange it for fresh oxygen, which is essential for human life. Even smaller plants help clean the atmosphere a little bit at a time. That is why you need to choose gardening as a hobby, even if it means growing smaller plants in your backyard.

You Get A Better Heart

The latest studies show that gardening could improve your heart health. In fact, gardening is a moderate-intensity exercise that helps reduce your risk of heart attack by at least 30%. Gardening is a great hobby for older people who cannot jog on a treadmill or access a gym.

Stress Relief

Many people have reported that they felt better after taking care of their gardens for the day. In fact, physical activity and working outdoors are great for both your mind and body. It helps relieve stress and calm your mind.

As per a recent Dutch study , gardening was found to be a great stress-relieving activity, even better than reading. The gardeners experienced lower cortisol levels, which is the primary hormone related to stress.

Improved Self-Esteem

Anyone who has nurtured a successful garden knows how it feels when they harvest crops or see the flowers bloom. These people have reported feeling good about themselves and more confident about their gardening skills. Introducing new plants to your garden to challenge your skills is a great way to experience even more self-esteem and confidence over time.

Reduce The Carbon Footprint

Gardening helps the planet in more than one way. Gardening also helps reduce your carbon footprint since plants absorb CO2 and release oxygen. On the other hand, when you consume fruits and veggies from your own backyard, you spend less money on pre-packaged foods. It also reduces toxins released from vehicles transporting food to your home from the grocery.

You Are Helping Local Wildlife

Native plants play an important role in propagating the animal and human species by providing food. For example, gardens encourage bees to pollinate local plants and improve the atmosphere for local wildlife.

A good garden will also provide shelter for small insects from the summer sun and predators. On the other hand, when you grow more native plants in your garden, you are promoting the overall well-being of your local environment.

Gardens Help Stimulate Your Brain

Your brain is able to adapt to your gardening habits more than you expect. For example, people who garden regularly experience a decreased risk of dementia . That is because gardening requires people to regularly practice skills like dexterity, strength, and problem-solving. These skills help avoid brain diseases & delay their progression.

Are There Drawbacks To Choosing Gardening As A Hobby?

Yes, there are a few drawbacks to gardening when choosing a hobby . Some of these disadvantages include:

  • Gardening takes a lot of time and energy.
  • If you don’t know what you are doing, gardening is a good way to waste both your time and money.
  • Did you know that gardening can get you in trouble with the law at times? Yes, some municipal authorities ban front or backyard vegetable gardens when neighbors complain.
  • You can easily contract a serious infection if you garden without protective equipment. Gardening exposes you to dirt, bacteria, and other harmful pathogens in the soil. Digging in the dirt without protective equipment can expose you to conditions like Legionnaires disease, fungal infections, and tetanus.
  • Gardening hurts and can injure you if you don’t follow the required safety measures.
  • Gardening is not cheap. You should spend money on plants, gardening equipment, soil amendments, and fertilizer.

Why I Love Gardening: How It Changed My Life

Photo of author

Have you ever wondered why some people are so passionate about gardening, treating their plants like prized possessions?

I share my own gardening story here today. It all started during my childhood when my grandmother, Jenny, introduced me to the wonders of gardening. We’d spend hours in her lush backyard, planting and tending to various crops.

Our special bond grew as we harvested tomatoes and transformed them into homemade spaghetti sauce. This early connection to the earth and to family traditions sparked a lifelong love for gardening in me.

Whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or just considering your first soil-dusted adventure, this article is for you. Discover the science-backed benefits of gardening, from stress reduction to improved mental health.

Get ready to dig in, because understanding why people love gardening might just inspire you to pick up a trowel and join in the fun.

Key Reasons I Love Gardening

  • Gardening is a journey of resilience : Embrace setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow.
  • Your garden can be a peaceful oasis : Design calming spaces and embrace the meditative process.
  • Gardening is a lifelong pursuit : Constantly learn, experiment, and be patient.
  • Benefits go beyond greenery : You can enjoy fresh, nutritious food and make a positive impact on the environment.
  • Gardening is a creative outlet : Plan and design your garden as a dynamic and evolving canvas.
  • Gardening offers a tangible way to connect with nature and yourself.
  • Gardening is for everyone : From novices to experts, the joy and benefits are available to all.

My Gardening Story: From Novice to Enthusiast

In this part, I’m sharing my own gardening tale, from the initial spark that tugged at my heart to the myriad challenges that made me question my green thumb. I hope my journey resonates with you, whether you’re just starting out or have been working your plot for years.

The Initial Spark

A woman and a young girl, both expressing their love for gardening, standing in a lush tomato plant.

I had always admired my grandmother Jenny’s green thumb, but it wasn’t until that sunny afternoon in her backyard that I caught the gardening bug. We were there to grow tomatoes, and as she handed me a tiny seedling, she shared tales of her own grandmother doing the same—talk about a family tradition!

As the days turned into weeks and then months, that little seedling transformed into a sprawling tomato plant, laden with juicy red globes. Harvesting those tomatoes with Jenny was a joy I can’t quite put into words.

We spent hours in her kitchen, turning them into the most mouthwatering homemade spaghetti sauce. The aroma alone was a trip down memory lane.

That experience with my grandmother taught me that gardening is more than just a hobby; it’s a way to connect with our roots—both literally and figuratively. The garden became our shared passion, bridging the generational gap and creating an unbreakable bond. And that’s the same bond that I now have with my daughters.

If you have someone in your life who loves to garden, consider joining them in the dirt. The memories you’ll create will be worth every ounce of soil.

A mother and daughter enjoying the bountiful harvest of tomatoes in an orchard, showcasing their shared love for gardening.

Overcoming Challenges

Gardening, like any pursuit worth its salt, isn’t all sunshine and blooming roses. It has its thorny moments, quite literally. But the beauty of it all is realizing that every setback is a masterclass in resilience.

My initial forays into gardening were marked by a series of mishaps. I drowned plants with overzealous watering, underestimated the importance of sunlight, and didn’t give my soil the love and care it deserved. It was a humbling experience, to say the least.

But instead of throwing in the trowel (pun intended), I treated these moments as opportunities to learn. I read books, attended workshops, and even sought advice from seasoned gardeners in my community.

Here are a few challenges I faced, and the lessons I learned:

  • The Battle of the Bugs : Pesky insects, the bane of every gardener’s existence. My first encounter with aphids left my prized roses looking like a buffet. But instead of reaching for chemical sprays, I dove into the world of organic pest control . I introduced beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings to my garden and embraced companion planting. The result? A thriving ecosystem where pests and predators balanced each other out.
  • The Soil Conundrum : Not all dirt is created equal, and my plants made sure I knew it. From heavy clay to sandy soil, each posed a different challenge. The solution? I became a soil connoisseur. I enriched my clay soil with compost , added organic matter to my sandy beds, and even experimented with raised beds and containers to have more control over the growing medium.
  • The Weather Woes : From scorching summer days to unexpected frosts, Mother Nature can be quite fickle. I lost tender seedlings and watched some of my favorite plants succumb to extreme weather conditions. But instead of cursing the skies, I started planting with the climate in mind. Drought-tolerant varieties, shade cloths, and frost blankets became my best friends.

Through each of these challenges, I not only became a more knowledgeable gardener but also discovered a newfound determination to succeed. Gardening has taught me that setbacks are just opportunities in muddied overalls.

So, the next time you face a garden glitch, remember this: a green thumb isn’t something you’re born with, but a skill you cultivate through weathered leaves and lessons learned.

The Joy of Gardening: A Therapeutic Escape

Gardening has been my refuge, my sanctuary, and my personal therapist. There are two aspects that make gardening an unparalleled therapeutic escape – Creating a Peaceful Oasis and The Meditative Process.

A woman and a boy enjoying their time together while picking tomatoes in a garden.

Creating a Peaceful Oasis

Imagine you’re in your garden, surrounded by a gentle breeze and the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers. The only sounds you hear are the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves. In this moment, the cacophony of the outside world is muted, and a serene calm washes over you. This is the power of gardening as a peaceful oasis.

When I step into my garden, everything else fades into the background. The act of tending to plants, feeling the soil between my fingers, and witnessing the slow growth and transformation—it all brings a sense of tranquility like no other.

And research agrees, with studies showing that spending time in nature can reduce stress, anxiety, and even lower blood pressure.

Why is gardening so calming? Well, it’s a multi-sensory experience. You see vibrant colors, feel the soft petals, and breathe in the earthy scents. It’s a feast for the senses, and each one contributes to the overall peace you feel.

Here’s a list of ways gardening and gardens have led to a peaceful oasis in my life:

  • Smells : Fragrant flowers, herbs, and freshly turned earth.
  • Sounds : Birds chirping, leaves rustling, and the trickle of water in a fountain or pond.
  • Sights : Lush greenery, colorful blooms, and even the play of light and shadow.
  • Touch : The softness of a velvety petal, the rough texture of tree bark, and the coolness of dew on your fingertips.

Gardening invites me to be present, to observe, and to nurture. When I feel overwhelmed, I take a stroll through my garden or spend a few minutes tending to my plants. You’ll be surprised at how this simple act can transform your mental state.

The Meditative Process

Gardening has this uncanny ability to morph into a meditative affair. The repetitive tasks, like sowing seeds or weeding, give us something to focus on, something to immerse ourselves in. And as we’re engaged in these tasks, nature becomes our partner in this dance of mindfulness.

Here’s how the meditative garden process can unfold:

  • Repetition and Rhythm : Whether it’s the rhythmic motion of raking or the repeated strokes of a pruning shear, the repetitive nature of many gardening tasks can be inherently calming.
  • Focus on the Present : As we tend to each plant, each flower, we’re drawn into the present moment. Worries and stressors seem to fade into the background as we become fully engrossed in this gentle, natural rhythm.
  • Connection to the Senses : From the smell of freshly turned soil to the feel of cool water on our hands, every sensory experience in the garden deepens our connection with nature and brings us into the here and now.
  • Nature as a Guide : In the garden, we follow the rhythm of the seasons, the needs of different plants, and the daily changes in light and weather. This attunement to the natural world fosters a sense of harmony and flow.

I find that the meditative aspect of gardening is a chance to unplug, let go, and be fully present. The garden becomes our sanctuary, a space where we can find a moment of peace amidst the chaos of daily life.

A mother and daughter share a tender moment in a luscious field of tomatoes, showcasing the beauty and fulfillment of gardening.

Constant Learning of Gardening: A Lifelong Pursuit

Gardening is a journey of constant learning, and that’s precisely what makes it such a lifelong pursuit. Gardening is no static affair; it’s a dance with nature that demands we stay nimble, curious, and forever open to new knowledge. It’s like stumbling upon a hidden library, where each plant and plot offers a fresh book to unravel.

The more time I spend in the garden, the more I realize that its soil is not just a bed for plants — it’s a fertile ground for my own personal growth.

Here are a few of the many skills and insights gardening has taught me:

  • Plant Proficiency : Knowing the difference between a perennial and an annual, deciphering a plant’s light and water requirements, and understanding its growth habit—all this botanical knowledge comes with time and hands-on experience.
  • Soil Science : Every garden plot has its own tale to tell, and soil is the storyteller. From pH levels to compaction, soil texture to nutrient deficiencies, understanding and amending the very foundation of your garden is like unlocking the secret language of plants.
  • Ecosystem Dynamics : As I dig deeper into gardening, I find myself delving into the intricate relationships between plants, insects, soil microorganisms, and even larger creatures. Gardening is both an art and a science, and this newfound ecological perspective has enriched my view of the natural world.
  • Creative Problem-Solving : Gardening keeps us on our toes, doesn’t it? From battling pests and diseases to mitigating climate challenges, every season brings its own set of conundrums. But with every problem comes an opportunity to innovate, whether it’s through companion planting, homemade remedies, or simply observing and adapting.
  • A Taste for Experimentation : Gardening is a delightful playground for the curious. Over the years, I’ve tried my hand at everything from heirloom vegetables to hybrid flowers, from traditional planting to hydroponics. Some experiments have yielded bumper crops, while others have been valuable lessons in resilience and letting go.
  • A Lesson in Patience : Gardening is a gentle reminder that not everything is instant gratification. It teaches us to wait, to tend, and to nurture with unwavering patience. And when those first shoots push through the soil or that bud finally blooms, the reward is all the more sweeter.

Gardening has not just been about turning barren land into bountiful gardens; it has transformed me into a perpetual student, each harvest season bringing a new chapter to study. It’s a journey of endless fascination and self-discovery, all sparked by the humble act of sowing a seed and watching it grow.

A Source of Fresh, Nutritious Food

Arugula Lettuce in Salad

My garden isn’t just a patch of soil; it’s an oasis of fresh, nutritious food and a sanctuary for nature.

Gardening has elevated my relationship with food to a whole new level. The sheer joy of plucking a ripe tomato from the vine or biting into a freshly picked cucumber is unbeatable. But it’s not just about the taste; it’s about the unparalleled nutrition.

Here’s how growing your own produce can be a game-changer for your diet:

  • Nutritional Superiority : Homegrown fruits and vegetables often outshine their store-bought counterparts in both taste and nutrition. This is because you have complete control over the soil quality, fertilizers, and pest control methods you use.
  • Rich in Antioxidants : The moment you harvest your crops, they begin to lose some of their nutritional value. By growing your own, you can consume them at their peak, when they are bursting with antioxidants that are crucial for our health.
  • Variety and Seasonality : Ever wondered why a tomato from the farmers’ market tastes better than a supermarket one in the dead of winter? Homegrown produce allows you to explore heirloom varieties and enjoy food when it’s in season and at its best.
  • Reduced Chemical Exposure : When you control the growing process, you can avoid or minimize the use of synthetic pesticides and herbicides, ensuring you consume food that is as clean and safe as possible.

There’s a certain satisfaction in knowing that the food on your plate came from just steps away. You become more mindful of what you eat, savoring each bite, and appreciating the journey it took from seed to table.

Gardening has taught me that the freshest, most nutritious food isn’t just an indulgence; it’s a daily celebration of nature’s gifts.

Positive Environmental Impact

Gardening isn’t just about beautifying our surroundings; it’s about being good stewards of the earth we inhabit. The positive impact of gardening on the environment is profound, and it goes beyond the surface.

Let me walk you through some of the key ways gardening has transformed me into an environmental advocate:

  • Carbon Footprint Reduction
  • By growing my own food, I’ve significantly reduced my reliance on store-bought produce, which often travels long distances, contributing to carbon emissions.
  • Composting kitchen scraps and yard waste has cut down on the amount of organic matter ending up in landfills, where it would generate harmful greenhouse gases.
  • Increased Biodiversity
  • Creating wildlife-friendly gardens with diverse plant species has provided essential habitats and food sources for pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects.
  • Observing different species thrive in my garden has made me more aware of the intricate web of life and our role in its conservation.
  • Water Conservation
  • Employing smart watering techniques, like using rainwater catchment systems or drip irrigation, has reduced my water usage significantly.
  • Mulching garden beds conserves soil moisture, reducing the need for additional watering.
  • Soil Health and Conservation
  • Ditching synthetic fertilizers and opting for organic amendments and compost has improved the health of my soil, making it more resilient and less prone to erosion.
  • Implementing practices like crop rotation and cover cropping helps maintain the soil’s structure and fertility, preventing nutrient runoff into nearby water bodies.

These actions may seem small, but when multiplied across the gardening community, they make a significant impact. Gardening has offered me a tangible way to contribute positively to the environment, fostering a deep sense of responsibility and connection to the planet we call home.

Gardening as a Creative Outlet

I’ve always had a deep appreciation for the arts, but it wasn’t until I discovered gardening that I found a truly dynamic and evolving creative outlet.

Gardening is like painting with nature, where I’m the director and the plants are my actors. From the initial designing and planning stages to the seasonal transformations, every step offers a chance to exercise my artistic instincts.

Designing and Planning

My garden is a blank canvas, a world I can shape with my imagination and a few basic principles of design. The artistic process of plotting out beds, walkways, and focal points is where the magic begins. And let’s not forget the plant selection—the colors, textures, and heights that come together to create a living masterpiece.

There’s a rhythm to it all, a harmony in the way colors and forms play off each other. When I’m designing my own garden, I find myself drawn to certain color schemes—cool blues and purples for a serene retreat, or fiery oranges and reds for a vibrant energy boost. It’s like painting with living pigments.

The key to a successful garden design plan is capturing not only your own aesthetic vision but also the practical considerations of your space and climate. By thoughtfully placing plants of varying heights and textures, you can create layers and add depth to your landscape. It’s like choreographing a dance between the plants and the elements.

My love for artistic expression and my passion for gardening converged when I discovered the world of themed gardens. From formal knot gardens with their intricate patterns to wild meadows that dance with the wind, each theme offers a unique artistic statement. It’s not just about pretty flowers—it’s about telling a story, evoking an emotion, or creating a sense of place.

Consider some of these design and storytelling strategies and tips:

  • Color Schemes : Experiment with different combinations and learn how they influence the mood of your garden.
  • Focal Points : Choose a dominant feature, like a sculpture, large plant, or even a well-placed bench, to create a sense of focus and draw the eye.
  • Texture Play: Mix up leaf shapes and sizes to add interest and depth to your beds.
  • Repetition and Balance : Repeating certain plants or elements can create a sense of rhythm and balance in your design.
  • Themed Gardens : Pick a theme, whether it’s inspired by a favorite book, culture, or time period, and let it guide your plant and design choices.

Your garden is an ever-evolving canvas. Don’t be afraid to experiment, take risks, and let your personality shine through. It’s this artistic freedom that makes gardening not just a hobby but a transformative experience.

Each season is a theater production in my garden, with new characters, colors, and scents taking center stage. The excitement of watching the plot unfold, from the tender greens of spring to the fiery hues of autumn, is unparalleled.

When you witness these shifts, you develop a deeper connection with nature. You start to understand the intricate dance between the elements and the plants, and it’s both humbling and awe-inspiring. It’s a reminder that life, even in its most delicate forms, is resilient and cyclical.

Seeing the barren winter landscape slowly awaken with the arrival of crocuses and snowdrops is like spotting the first light after a long, dark night. The garden then grows with confidence, each bloom and leaf adding to the overall tapestry.

And let’s not forget the joy of harvesting your own bounty in the summer. From crisp lettuce leaves to juicy tomatoes, the rewards are not just visual but also gastronomic. There’s a sense of accomplishment in knowing that you played a part in this cycle of growth and nourishment.

When you witness these transformations year after year, your perspective on time changes. You become more attuned to the rhythm of the natural world, and in turn, it grounds you. Life’s daily stresses seem a bit smaller when you can step outside and witness the grand spectacle of nature’s theater.

Final Thoughts on My Love for Gardening

As I conclude this heartfelt ode to gardening, I can’t help but dwell on the personal growth, happiness, and fulfillment it has ushered into my life. What started as a pastime soon became a passion, and now, it’s an intrinsic part of who I am.

Through all the seasons, successes, and setbacks, gardening has taught me patience, resilience, and the beauty of life’s cycles. It’s given me a sense of purpose, a sanctuary to retreat to, and the joy of nurturing something from seed to bloom. In the garden, I’ve found solace during difficult times and celebration during moments of triumph.

The lessons I’ve learned from tending the soil have extended far beyond the confines of my backyard. The interconnectedness of plants and ecosystems has inspired me to be more mindful of my choices and their impact on the planet. Gardening has also helped me forge deeper connections with my community, as I’ve shared my bounty with friends and neighbors.

If you’re yet to embark on this green journey, I can’t recommend it enough. The benefits are as varied as the flowers in a meadow: a respite from the hustle and bustle, a chance to grow both as a gardener and as an individual, and the simple, unadulterated joy of watching life flourish under your care.

So, grab a trowel, dig your hands into the earth, and let gardening transform your life. I promise you, it’s a love affair that will only blossom with time.

What’s Your Gardening Story?

Now, it’s your turn to step into the spotlight. I want to hear your gardening tales, your triumphs, and even your epic failures. Gardening is a journey we all embark on, and no two paths are the same.

Share your story, and let’s create a vibrant, interconnected community where we can celebrate the joys and learn from the challenges.

By sharing your experiences, you’re not only adding depth to our understanding of gardening but also giving others the courage to take those first steps or the inspiration to try something new.

Whether you have a sprawling backyard or a single windowsill, your voice matters, and I can’t wait to hear it. The garden is a place not just for plants to grow but for us to grow as well, so let’s grow together.

English Composition I: Evaluation Essay

English Composition I: Evaluation Essay In the era when the world is facing the issue of deforestation and global warming, gardening as a hobby is surely quite rejuvenating as it goes on to bring life on earth. Gardening is definitely one of the most popular hobbies that are pursued by people all over the globe. Apart from providing the hobbyist with utmost happiness and satisfaction, the hobby of gardening has many important benefits. A close introspection about the matter in context would make it clear to one and all how gardening is useful and interesting as a hobby for any individual. A discussion regarding the benefits would suffice the argumentation. It has to be comprehended that gardening is surely a great exercise for any person. People would definitely cherish the weight loss benefits of gardening, apart from its ability to minimize stress, lower cholesterol level, lower blood pressure, and also diminish a person’s depression. Apart from this, it has been proven by various studies that simply gazing at the garden or the plants can bring in changes in the heart activity, blood pressure, brain electrical activity and emotions of any person. According to Darnton (2014), “A ten percent increase in nearby green space was found to decrease a person’s health complaints in an amount equivalent to a five year reduction in that person’s age.” Thus, it would be correct to opine that gardening is surely a form of therapy for the mind and body with all the tranquility and happiness that is involved. Gardening also has a huge impact on the environment. People have a fair idea regarding the negative impact that the human race has on the world environment. However, gardening can be seen as a potential way of countering the negative impacts on the environment as it goes beyond saying that the plants used in the process are highly beneficial as carbon dioxide absorbents and air cleaners. Apart from this, if the cover of plants on the ground is dense enough, it holds the soil in place- something that diminishes the process of erosion of soil and keeps the soil sediments out of the water bodies or roads. Also, by the process of plantation of more gardens like the rain gardens, people can stop the harmful pollutants from reaching the water bodies. It has to be reckoned that rain gardens are not only beautiful and beneficial for the environment, but they are also easy to maintain and do not involve much expenditure. Gardens at one’s home not only add to the holistic environmental condition of the world, but it also has some specific benefits for the household. Gardens create a very impressive environmental landscape in the home, and thereby cool the homes in summer and keep them warm in winter season. It has to be understood that energy efficient landscaping can be very effective in the process of reduction of energy costs by as much as 20 percent (as per the opinion of Plants for Clean Air Council). Apart from these varied benefits, a garden can be described to be the tool of enhancing the property value of a house. If a person goes on to invest in gardening, it can be considered to be an investment that is aimed at the future. It can be opined that if a yard is designed exquisitely, it would definitely add more appeal to the house and thus enhance the holistic value of the residence. That in turn would add to the monetary value of the house, apart from adorning the ambiance for the people living there. One can imagine having a vegetable garden at home. Such a garden would surely enhance the quality and freshness of the edibles for the people of the home. While the world is suffering from the threat of overuse of fertilizers and pesticides, such a vegetable garden can ensure the best quality of edibles for the household. It has to be acknowledged that landscaping and gardening have become quite an art form. Thus, with all the aesthetic sense involved, gardening as a hobby can bring pride and self-satisfaction to the persons involved in the process. It should be kept in mind that gardening is a hobby of a life-time. With time, the people who are involved get more experienced as they get to know the nuances to keep the plants well and new ways to beautify the garden. In the present day scenario where the world makes people get stressed with work and life, gardening can bring a breath of fresh air with all the beauty and goodness involved in the hobby of gardening. People have to consider the health benefits involved. The busy lifestyle of people might not let them get time for working out. As such, gardening can be a very good alternative that ensures wellness of the mind and body. Thus, it would be correct to conclude that gardening is one of the most beneficial hobbies that can help humans in more ways than one. It has its holistic effect through benefitting the mind and the soul of the people involved. Moreover, it helps the environment, and adds constructively to the society and world. People who are involved in practicing the hobby already know the importance and emotions involved in gardening. The ones who are yet to get engaged in this hobby should take a note of the multi-faceted benefits of the hobby, and should start gardening at their homes right away to have experience of the true essence of the hobby. Hence, it can be said that gardening is one of the best hobbies with a whole lot of benefits.

Set 1: Essay On My Hobby Gardening

Hobbies are the best means of entertainment, knowledge and spending our leisure time. Hobbies bring happiness to our idle routine life. They keep us away from bad habits. Hobbies depend upon the likings of an individual. There are many types of hobbies- reading, stamp collection, coin collection, sports, singing, dancing, etc.

My hobby is gardening . I love nature very much. My parents are also very fond of gardening. I acquired this hobby from them. We have a spacious garden in the backyard. We have a couple of trees like mangoes , lemon, chikoo, and guava.

We also have a variety of flowering plants like Rose , Mogara, Chameli, Hibiscus, Lily, etc. I spend one hour in the evening in the garden. I regularly water the plants and manure them. I remove the weeds and do all the essential work there. I feel very comfortable when I am in my garden. All the plants and trees are my friends . I talk to them. They make me happy whenever I am in a bad mood. Working in the garden keeps me physically fit.

Many birds regularly visit our garden. They build their nests at suitable places. I enjoy watching them. I have got a good knowledge of birds. I can identify them and know their food habits. We get a good amount of fruits and vegetables from our garden. I spend a big part of my pocket money on my hobby. I keep on buying seeds, new plants, garden equipment, manure, etc. Some of my friends also have the same hobby. We discuss this with each other. We visit the flower and plant exhibitions held in the city .

Thus this hobby keeps me tension-free and fresh. I feel much nearer to God and Mother Nature when I am in the garden.

Set 2: Essay On My Hobby Gardening

A hobby is one’s best past time. It is something which while giving satisfaction is enjoyable too. But given a choice, gardening is a very pleasant and rewarding as a hobby. A little piece of land in front or at the back or around the house is enough to launch this hobby. After the day’s hard work, or even before the day begins early in the morning and then for the whole day on a holiday one can enjoy to indulge and involve himself in this hobby.

Right from digging the earth, beating down the moulds into fine-soil, then turning them into small beds, mixing the manure in the soil, one is ready to plant the seeds or the saplings or the seedlings and then softly watering them. In the process one has to select what grows where to give a real glorious glow to the piece of land which may be a pleasure to the eye as also productive for the hobbyists.

If the piece of land is big enough, one arranges and selects proper places for the fruit plants, the papaya, the lemon, the guava, the big banana or even the pomegranate and lichi, but in case it is just a small piece of land one limits oneself to the flowers and a few creepers.

Each day is a day of care and caution, with an eager and an expectant eye one watches the sprouting from the seeds, or the saplings or seedlings, taking roots, and standing up on their own. Gradually the flower seeds have shown up the sproutings and the seedlings showing up new leaves and the growth is watched with such a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment when finally the flowers bloom into their dazzling multi-coloured hues and there is, as if a riot of colours all around. ‘Dancing with the daffodils’ – this is what the great nature-poet Wordsworth has said and rightly so. The hobbyist’s heart also gets elated to watch the perfect result of his labours. And then after months of looking after the grape wine or the papaya or the guava or the banana in a bunch, show up their face first; it is a gratification indeed. The labour has been rewarded.

Thus goes on the game of gardening. Gardening, as a hobby has so many advantages. One can spend one’s leisure time in physical work, which exercises the body; the results elate the mind and the fruits fresh and free are a pleasure to be tasted. Spending spare time in useless gossip or straining the eyesight viewing the T.V. – all this is hardly a useful utilization of one’s leisure. You dig, you till, you soil with your hands, you even sweat in the process and the least of it all, you are constantly in the company of nature which company is never boring never tiring rather, it is ever rewarding in every way. You reap the fruits of your labour-what else can be so satisfying than that. You are face to face with the spirituality of the matter how from such a small seed gets produced such beauty, such lustre and such a result. God’s nature is wonderful

that’s what you have at last to feel and say. This is thus the most rewarding hobby, if one develops it and enjoys it too. The hobby of gardening can give us an insight in understanding the purport of what Wordsworth has said in these lines about nature. One impulse from the vernal wood May teach you more of man Of moral evil and of good Than all the Sages can.

Nature is the book from which one can learn all that the creation is about, the mysteries of life, the beauties of life and the bounties bestowed upon us by the creator.

Set 3: Essay On My Hobby – Gardening

Hobby is a work which we do in our spare time. Hobby is a favourite pursuit or interest apart from one’s occupation. It is different from regular work. Hobby keeps us usefully busy and provides a welcome change in the dull routine of life.

There is a wide range of hobbies. Some people sit in company and pass their leisure time in playing cards or chess. Some read books in a quiet corner of their house. Some take up gardening, stamp and coin collecting, photography, fishing, hunting, painting, clay modelling and so on. Whatever hobbies a man may choose, the main object should be to derive aesthetic pleasure, mental a relaxation, physical freshness and recreation from them.

My hobby is photography. It is a very useful hobby as it trains the mind as well as the eye. Photography develops taste for beauty and also makes us careful, smart and neat. I feel that there is no other hobby so interesting and useful as photography.

My uncle presented me a camera on my birthday and since then my interest in photography kept on increasing. I have a great collection of photographs in my album. I go to nearby hills, gardens and zoo and take photographs. Whenever I feel tired and bored, I look at the photos and get refreshed and get a great joy.

Gardening as my hobby

Short Essays on Gardening as my Hobby

Gardening as my hobby (600 words).

“Gardening brings me to God’s nature, plants, flowers, seeds, vegetables, fruits, on mother Earth.”

My hobby is gardening that I enjoy tremendously and like from the heart. I feel naturally attached to the world of Nature. Outdoor life is surely better than our indoor life of modern comforts and luxuries. It is only when the weather is extremely hot or cold that I like to stay indoors. But when the weather is fine and pleasant, I rush out to stay in the open atmosphere and natural surroundings. (That is, in fine weather, I desire to stay outdoors).

Gardening keeps us in two worlds at the same time (simultaneously)—the home and nature, that is, the world of our family and its joys and problems and the world of the trees, bushes, plants, and flowers and their charms. There is quite a big garden in our house. I go there early in the morning and work on the plants for an hour. On holidays, I work in the “green world” in the evening too. My work in the garden changes with the season. I plant new trees in the rainy season. I look after my small plants and protect them against the sun. At the end of the summer, I plant vegetables for the winter. At the end of the winter, I plant vegetables for the summer. I sow seeds of vegetables and flowers at the end of the summer. I do not work much in the autumn.

I have different kinds of roses in my garden. In the winter and spring, the rose flowers in red, yellow, golden, white, and other colors are simply enchanting (very delightful). Gardening gives me good exercise. I water the plants and soften the ground near their roots. Then I also cut away the extra, useless branches of the trees or plants. All this keeps me physically active and smart.

Gardening gives me real joy and satisfaction of the heart and mind. It takes me close to Nature, to the plants, trees, and earth, and I feel the freshness of things. While working in my garden, I see beautiful birds and hear their sweet chirping. For some time, I forget all the worries or problems of life. I am in a world much higher than the ordinary one of “duties and desires.” In that world, I am close to the beauties and music of Nature and to God Who created everything. What a pleasure it is to see the plants flowering and the trees growing new leaves! How sweet it is to see the results of one’s efforts early in the morning in a green garden!

Truly speaking, physical work in a garden or field gives us physical exercise and mental satisfaction. Both the body and mind get strengthened (or invigorated) in the fresh, natural. atmosphere. It is, thus, natural that I feel stronger and happier when I move back from my small garden to everyday activities. Resultingly, I understand my lessons better, move and walk at greater ease and eat the foods and fruits with greater desire.

From the garden of plants Dol move to the garden of inner joys: The flowers smile on the branches and leaves, The ideas dance on the heartbeats and in the mind.

Gardening as my Hobby (400 Words)

A hobby is an activity which is carried on in leisure time. A hobby is that activity and not of earning money.  It is a means of recreation pastime. It gives delight and helps in passing the leisure time. Any activity which is carried on for the sake of earning money ceases to be a source of pleasure. It becomes tiresome. A hobby, on the other hand, is an activity which is carried on entirely for the sake of pleasure which it gives. Thus, teaching is not a source of pleasure for a teacher who undertakes teaching as his profession. But it may be a source of pleasure for one who makes it his hobby.[the_ad id=”17142″]

Hobbies differ from person to person. There are as many hobbies as there are. men and women in the world. Tastes differ and so do hobbies. Someone may have stamp-collecting as his hobby, while another may find pleasure in reading books. Stamp-collecting, collection of coins, photography, swimming, gardening, kite-flying etc. are a few of the common hobbies.

Gardening is my hobby. I derive great pleasure from this hobby. At the back of my house, there is a small plot of land. It is my garden. I grow flowers and some vegetables of the season in this plot. Besides this, I have a number of flower pots in which I have grown some ever-green plants and some flowering plants. I indulge in my hobby early in the morning as soon as I am out of bed, or in the evening after I return from my college. I do not allow my hobby to. come in the way of my studies. I carry on gardening only in my spare time.

My hobby is a good hobby. It is useful in many ways. It gives me pleasure. It refreshes me when I am tired after the day’s hard work. In the morning, it brings me in touch with green plants and flowers. In this way, the lungs are filled with pure air. This is good for health. My hobby is health-giving. Besides this, it provides the family with fresh vegetables. Flowers, which I grow, decorate the house and make it look beautiful. My hobby has another advantage also. It is quite cheap. It does not place any extra burden on my parents.

Everyone should have one or the other hobby. Pakistanis, generally, do not have any hobby. They waste their leisure time in idle gossip. This is bad. They should try to have some hobbies. In this matter, they must not be guided by others but should select a hobby which suits their tastes and the circumstances of their lives. Pleasure is the chief end of a hobby, and so the best hobby is one which delights and recreates.

A hobby is work which a person does with much satisfaction and amusement. It is a kind of recreation, a shadow from the scorching beam of the sun and also getting fruit from it. I have been interested in gardening since my childhood. I like to see the green velvety grass, different colours of flowers and beautiful plants. So, I have selected a piece of land in my house and planted different kinds of flowers. I have planted a red rose, yellow and black rose plants and have arranged them one after another. The flowers of -Night Queen”, “Jasmine” and “King of the day” have filled the atmosphere with attractive fragrance. In the evening my family spend their time in the garden. I have also planted Guava and Neem trees, which give shade from the scorching beam and also get fruit from it. I have also reserved a piece of land for growing vegetables and getting different seasonal vegetables. Though gardening is hard work and expensive, the hard labour makes my health sound and we get fresh vegetables and beautiful flowers.

Here is a sample essay on my hobby that students can refer to.

Routine work makes us monotonous. To break it we often look for interesting and exciting things to do. Hobbies are the best way to divert attention side by side with work. We need entertainment from time to time. At such times a good hobby is very useful. Hobbies provide recreation. They entertain us and at the same time are valuable in the sense that they develop a personality.

My hobby is singing. People often resort to gardening, reading, stamp collecting, bird watching, etc. However, I love to listen to music and also to sing. I have a large collection of tapes and I listen to all kinds of music. My collection ranges from classical music to Rock and from Indian music to the Western one. My hobby is to listen to these songs carefully and then to learn them. I sit with a paper and a pen and write down the lyrics of the songs that I hear. Then I hum along and soon I know the tunes too.

I switch the tape recorder off and then I pretend to be the singer myself. I sing the song exactly the way it was sung by the playback singer. I succeed at times and sometimes fail. Once I feel that I have begun to sing perfectly I tape my own voice. When I listen to the recording I listen objectively and try to locate my faults in singing. This helps me to improve on my singing and I find that also helps me to use my talent to my advantage.

Whenever I go to a party, my friends persuade me to sing. Once I begin, the party livens up, people join in and the place is filled with the sound of music. I feel proud of myself and my friends also praise me because they feel that I become the life of the party. I play the guitar and sing when we go on a picnic or when I have a free period in school.

My hobby makes me happy and also brings joy to all my relatives and friends. It is necessary that everybody must have some hobby. It educates man, gives him pleasure, and helps him to utilize his free time fruitfully. If a person has no hobby, his spare time will turn him into a useless, irritated and restless person. “An idle mind is a devil’s workshop”. It is, therefore, essential to remain busy even during leisure hours. Hobbies always come to one’s help.

The hectic world we live in can be stressful and unhealthy, but taking time to relax and refresh our minds is important. Gardening is a natural hobby that can provide many benefits, such as relieving stress and improving lung health. Gardening involves cultivating a love for the garden and its inhabitants, including flowers, trees, and insects. Engaging in this hobby can contribute to improving the environment and our quality of life. Gardening requires time and work, but it is fun and rewarding. To ensure a healthy garden, it is important to rotate crops and provide essential nutrients to the soil. Ultimately, gardening is a great way to keep our environment healthy and green.

Living in the world of hectic day routines and tough jobs, one always need to get time for relaxation and refreshing their minds. Rising civilization has made the environment unnatural and unhealthy. To get rid of all this for some time, a person can enjoy his off time wondering in parks, gardens or a places with lush green grass. Green color is a naturally refreshing color. To revive our minds and health we should engage ourselves in a natural hobby “gardening”. This is not only refreshing but is full of natural benefits. It helps to relive our stress and makes us relax. Fresh air keeps our lungs healthy. Gardening can be described as “love for garden and its inhabitants”. Here inhabitants are all creatures living in garden like flowers, trees, butterflies or all insects etc.

Gardening as my hobby, derives great pleasure for me. I love planting flowers, especially some vegetables of the particular season in my garden. Besides the plot planting, I got a numerous flowers-pots which help me in budding some very-green plants and some flowering plants. The most refreshing time to indulge myself in hobby is early in the morning as soon as I get out of my bed. Morning gardening really makes me feel so fresh and active. It helps me in relieving stress and tension and makes my day far better and healthier comparative to a morning without gardening. I carry on gardening only in my spare time.

As the responsible citizen, we should involve ourselves in this hobby. Gardening if taken as hobby by several people, we can together contribute to improve our environment for the better living. As we all are well aware of pollution in air and other hazardous pollutants in our surroundings which made this place a hell to live. If we take an initiative to start gardening at a domestic level in our homes, we can add health and quality in the surroundings and atmosphere we are living in.

Gardening as a hobby is of great fun, but it requires a lot of work and time too. To put the garden in order for blooming at its best and planting for the coming spring, some activities are of great importance to perform. One of the priorities is to spread and cultivate dung or peat moss over the garden soil, particularly if the garden is new. To ensure to get the healthier and better planting in the garden, you need to add fertilizers and feed soil with essential nutrients it needs before actually planting.

Keep in mind the few tips for gardening. The most important tip for planting is to grow variety of crops and flowers in different parts of the garden than they were earlier grown. Rotation of crops aids to enhance the health of the soil as well as prevent soil from various diseases. The other point to be kept in mind is keep on cutting and plucking shrubs and bushes in the plots or pots as they can take away the nutrients required by the plant you have planted.

Keep you environment healthy and greeny. Happy Gardening!

Essay on “My favourite Hobby “Gardening”” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

My favourite Hobby “Gardening”

The small garden in front of my house is the result of my favorite hobby, gardening. Gardening is my favorite hobby. I think, it is the best of all the hobbies which one can follow with a lot of amusement and benefit to health. I have laid out a smaller of amusement and benefit to health. I have laid out a smaller garden in front of my house. When I sit in my smaller garden a great pleasure. Sweet fragrant flowers of different hues sweeten as my mind. It helps me in many ways. While working in the garden not only do I spend my time in a better way but also improve my health as thus I spend my time in better way but also improve my health as thus I take exercise unwillingly. It brings me close to Nature and I feel lost like Wordsworth in the beauty of blooms and blossoms around me.

The garden in front of my house is small, no doubt, but even then I am proud of it because it is the result of my own hard labor. There are smaller beds of flowers in which I grow seasonal flowers. When the plants bear blossoms, I feel a thrill of joy in my mind and take pride in my creative labor. Whenever any of my friends asks me anything about sowing and maintaining of plants. I give him information with elated feelings.

Surrounded by the beds of flowers is a smaller lawn with soft velvety green grass. I am very fond of this lawn ad take pride in maintaining it trim, tidy and neat. In the evening we sit in this lawn and talk chat and discuss several things. I have grown fruit fetes along the fringes of the grass lawn. Some of the fruit trees yield fruits but most of them are still young. Whenever any one of my friends comes. I offer him the fruits of my own garden with pride. The grapes, guavas and pomegranates of my garden are very sweet and juicy. Last year I planted a mango sapling which to the surprise of my friends, relatives and even myself, has borne fruit this year. Whenever any visitor comes to my house these days, I very proudly invite his attention to the hardly two feet tall tree that bears the fruit. This little garden is a place where I find peace and happiness.

Essay No. 2

Gardening is not very difficult. It involves preparing the soil, planting vegetables or flowers and paying attention to the garden. Many people make gardening their hobby and it is also a good form of exercise.

The first step in gardening is the preparation of the soil. If the soil is not god, the garden will not flourish. Dig the surface of the earth; then mix the top soil with manure and water. If you are planning a vegetable garden, prepare hedges for different vegetables you hope to plant; however flowers do not need hedges.

The vegetables or flowers that you will plant are often young plants in a water- proof bag. Dig a small hole , place the small plants along with the soil into the ground and cover with the mixed soil. Water the new plant.

After planting, you should pay close attention to your garden. This involves removing the weeds, removing dead leaves around the plants and watering the garden often.

Gardening makes one happy; when one is tired of studying or staying indoors, gardening gives one the opportunity to make light work outside. Moving around in the garden is also a kind of exercise for the body. A garden is also beneficial, as it provides people with flowers and vegetables.

250 Words Essay on My Hobby Gardening

Gardening, a hobby that intertwines with the rhythm of nature, has been my cherished pastime for years. It is not merely an activity but a therapeutic retreat that allows me to connect with nature’s essence and learn from its profound wisdom.

The Appeal of Gardening

Gardening holds an irresistible allure for its multifaceted benefits. It is an amalgamation of physical exercise, stress relief, and creative expression. The satisfaction derived from nurturing a seed into a plant, witnessing the cycle of growth, and finally harvesting the fruits of labor is unparalleled. It’s a manifestation of the power of patience and the beauty of transformation.

Learning from Nature

Gardening is a practical lesson in life sciences. It offers insights into botanical aspects, environmental conservation, and the interdependence of organisms. It also embodies philosophical teachings. Just as a plant requires the right conditions to flourish, so do we. This hobby has thus enriched my understanding of life and its intricacies.

The Therapeutic Aspect

The therapeutic aspect of gardening is often understated. The act of tending to plants, feeling the soil, and being exposed to the sun releases endorphins, the body’s natural mood enhancers. It provides a sense of accomplishment and contributes to mental well-being.

Gardening, to me, is more than a hobby; it’s a lifestyle that has shaped my perspective towards life. It has taught me the importance of patience, resilience, and the joy of creation. It is a hobby that nurtures the gardener as much as the garden. Through gardening, I have found a unique harmony with nature, a balance that I strive to maintain in all aspects of life.

500 Words Essay on My Hobby Gardening

Gardening is not just a hobby, but a sublime art that connects the human spirit with the vitality of nature. As a passionate gardener, I have found this activity to be a sanctuary of peace and a source of untamed creativity.

The Genesis of My Hobby

My interest in gardening was kindled during my early teens. My parents were avid gardeners, and I was drawn to the vibrant colors, the mesmerizing fragrances, and the miraculous life cycles of plants. The garden was a living laboratory where I learned about the interdependence of life forms, the importance of biodiversity, and the resilience of nature.

The Art of Gardening

Gardening is a multifaceted hobby. It involves the understanding of botany, the application of design principles, and the mastery of horticultural techniques. The garden is a canvas where the gardener paints with plants, arranging them in harmonious compositions of color, texture, and form. Gardening is also a practice of patience and mindfulness, as it requires careful observation, timely intervention, and a deep respect for the pace of natural processes.

Gardening and Sustainability

In the face of the environmental crisis, gardening has taken on a new significance. It is a powerful tool for sustainability, promoting biodiversity, conserving water, and reducing carbon footprint. As a gardener, I have embraced organic practices, composting, water-saving irrigation, and native planting. My garden has become a haven for pollinators and a showcase for the beauty of native species.

The Therapeutic Impact of Gardening

Beyond its aesthetic and environmental benefits, gardening has profound therapeutic effects. It is a form of active meditation, providing a respite from the digital world and grounding us in the physical reality of the earth. The act of nurturing plants fosters empathy, responsibility, and a sense of achievement. The garden is a place of healing, where we can reconnect with our roots and find solace in the rhythm of the seasons.

In conclusion, gardening is a hobby that enriches life in many ways. It enhances our appreciation of nature, sharpens our observational skills, and instills a sense of stewardship for the earth. It is a creative outlet that brings joy, beauty, and tranquility into our lives. As we tend to the garden, we also cultivate our minds and souls, discovering new insights and inspirations in the process. The garden is a microcosm of the world, reflecting the changes, challenges, and triumphs of life. In the words of the poet Alfred Austin, “The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature.”

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Gardening tips 2024 — ‘Square foot’ trick will make yard work easy for beginners – and you just need household items

All recommendations within this article are informed by expert editorial opinion. If you click on a link in this story we may earn affiliate revenue.

  • Sophie Gable , Live Blogs Reporter
  • Updated : 9:30 ET, Apr 10 2024

A GARDEN enthusiast has shared her method for yard work that requires less space.

"Something I wish I knew about before I started gardening that would have made the process so much easier and that is the square foot gardening method," Sabrina ( @sabrina.sustainable.life ) shared in a TikTok video.

Her hack only needed twine, a staple gun, a tape measure, and scissors, then she sectioned off her raised garden bed into one-foot squares with twine.

"It will help me grow so much more food in less space," she said.

"How it works is for each square of the garden bed you will plant a certain number of seeds or plants depending on the space required for each plant."

She got help from the Planter app that told her how much space she needed for a given plant, adding that the app will tell users whether plants are companions or combative.

Expert reveals easy 'one-third rule' for mowing

DIY Lawn Expert Kevin shared his easy tips for keeping lawns looking fresh all year around.

"Cut frequently. Mowing contributes greatly to the appearance and curb appeal of your lawn and is essential to its health and density, as it stimulates the plants to produce new growth," he explained.

Kevin explained that the one-third rule is a good rule of thumb for newbies to learn.

"Never remove more than one-third of the blade length in a single cutting. Removing more than one-third at a time puts undue stress on the grass limiting its ability to thrive," he explained.

Making your flowers last longer

Cut  flowers  can last for weeks with just three simple household items: sugar, bleach, and optional fresh lemon juice.

It’s also important to change the water often and trim the stems.

About a teaspoon of sugar and a drop of bleach will combine with the flower’s water to help the plants stay fresh.

Tulips are spring-blooming perennials

Boston chef shares tips to starting herb garden

Boston  chef Jason Jernigan has his own rooftop garden, where he grows multiple  herbs  and vegetables.

He named the two easiest herbs for  first-time gardeners  to grow.

“The first thing I started growing was basil. It’s just such a versatile herb, and it is easy to grow,” he told local ABC affiliate  WCVB .

Another easy herb for  fire-time growers,  according to Jernigan, is mint.

“Mint is one of the things that you can definitely start off with. It is very hearty.

“It is forgiving, so if you forget to water it, just like anything else, it is going to let you know. It smells great.”

Keeping your strawberries safe

One  TikToker  explained that she masks the sweet smell of her strawberry plants with another scent.

“Plant onion bulbs right in between all your strawberry plants,” Nicole said.

“Check out these strawberry leaves, they are completely pest-free, and they are looking so healthy.

“This is two months after planting and we are in high pest season,” Nicole added when  showing off  her crops.

Hacks for repelling pests

A  green-thumbed influencer  has shared her DIY solution for keeping deer and rabbits out of your yard.

In a gallon of water add at least one cup of milk, an egg, a tablespoon of garlic powder, and cayenne pepper.

She recommended pouring it into old coffee cans and placing them around your garden.

TikTok  users took to the comments section to share their own pest-repelling hacks.

“My same recipe, it definitely works. I had deer eating my flowers but sprayed it on them,” wrote one viewer.

Another follower said: “I sprinkle cayenne pepper and mist peppermint oil/water on my plants. Deer gone!”

“Cinnamon! I sprinkle it all over whatever they would eat and they leave it alone! It also smells good!” commented a third person.

I'm a deer expert - keep them out of your backyard using 4 cheap cupboard items

Watch below to see how this social media influencer easily waters her tomato plant, watch out for blossom end rot.

Blossom end  rot  is a problem that can foil your plans of eating vegetables straight from your garden.

This type of rot has a “distinctive appearance” and one expert describes it as “blackened, sunken cankers appear on the bottom (blossom end) of the fruits.”

Often the tops of the vegetables will look as if they are totally fine, only to have the rotting flesh on their underside.

“They are always on the blossom end of the fruits, never on the top,” the expert warned.

Top homegrown veggies

Tomatoes are the top vegetable  in the US, as 86 percent of gardeners grow them.

The top 10 homegrown vegetables in the US, according to  Garden Pals , include:

  • Sweet peppers
  • Summer squash
  • Hot peppers

Household item can be used to remove mass

Moss can be removed by sprinkling laundry detergent powder over the moss.

Gardening experts advise that it’s best to do this on a day when it will rain as this will kill the moss.

However, you can make your solution by mixing the detergent and water and pouring it over the moss.

Once the moss has turned brown (an indicator it is dead) you can sweep it away with a hard-bristled brush.

Ditch the grass when growing flowerbeds, part five

Johnson  also recommended selective herbicides  like Ornamec, which can be applied broadly over some plants to kill off grass.

The label should indicate if a selective herbicide is safe for your garden.

If you’re extremely careful, you can also use a non-selective herbicide to patch-treat.

“To treat the grass growing close to the garden plants, put on rubber gloves first and then a cheap cotton glove second,” Johnson instructed.

“Using two fingers on the cotton glove, dip into the herbicide and carefully wipe the blades of grass, avoiding any drips on adjacent garden plants.”

If you wait until the dead of summer, it will be hard to kill off grass with herbicides: the products work best when the grass is actively growing and might lose efficacy in the heat.

Ditch the grass when growing flowerbeds, part four

If your perennials are crowded with grass, you can  try another solution .

Gently lift the perennials out of the bed, and remove the grass infestation from their root balls.

Before you re-plant them, dig out the remaining grass.

You’ll need to keep an eye out for new grass growth in the days and weeks after you do this.

Try and do this before the weather gets too warm, Johnson warned.

“You can also wait until the weather is cooler in early September or next spring before using this technique to reduce stress on the plants,” he wrote.

“If you decide to wait, then pull the grass as best you can and do not allow it to go to seed.”

I’m a gardening expert – 3 ways to banish grass from your flower beds

Ditch the grass when growing flowerbeds, part three, ditch the grass when growing flowerbeds, part two.

One method, which is time-intensive but effective, is to  start pulling up grass  as soon as you see it.

Beginning this process earlier in the season is better, Johnson wrote, because it keeps grass from putting down deep roots and spreading all over your garden.

But if you start later in the season, you’ll have better luck if you work while the soil is moist.

Pulling up grass after a rain shower will make it easier to dislodge the roots, Johnson said.

“In time, the grass should weaken and eventually disappear,” he added.

Ditch the grass when growing flowerbeds

When grass finds its way into your flowerbeds, it can do more harm than good, choking your perennials and spreading through the space.

It may seem impossible to  banish grass from your flower beds  once it is infiltrated.

Tim Johnson, the senior director of horticulture at the Chicago Botanic Garden,  shared  advice in the Chicago Tribune.

“Grass is difficult to eradicate once it gets established in the crowns of perennials and in beds of groundcovers,” Johnson explained.

Easy starter foods to start growing

It can be daunting to grow food yourself, but having fresh products and avoiding grocery store prices makes the work worth it.

Perky Plant Parent ( @perkyplantparent ) on  TikTok  recommends starting with the following three easy foods,

  • Potatoes – can still grow without much maintenance
  • Tomatoes – just need water and fertilizer to grow
  • Lettuce – can grow in the shade

Why mulching is important

Mulch is an organic covering for the top of your soil and it helps keep it moist by protecting the surface of the soil.

Mulching reduces the amount that you should water your plants, so it’s important to get it right.

When you make a raised bed or any type of bed, you should always add mulch.

You can use a shredded straw or composted wood chips.

Why you should leave space between beds

When creating your garden, remember to leave about  two feet  between raised beds so that you can tend the plants comfortably.

“People don’t think about the fact that they have to come through and work on these gardens and then they get annoyed and then they stop working on the beds,” gardening expert Kevin Espiritu explained.

Shoppers rave about garden beds that are nearly half off in Walmart sale

Maintaining a successful raised garden.

Espiritu also noted that having good soil is key to maintaining a successful garden.

“If you’re going to invest in something, you should invest in your soil,” the expert noted.

“You don’t go buy a nice quality raised bed and try to grow plants in that system with crappy soil. It doesn’t make any sense at all.”

Vegetable gardens are perfect for raised beds

More on raised gardens

Starting a  raised garden  can be overwhelming, but YouTuber Kevin Espiritu shared a  video  to help prevent common mistakes.

First of all, the position of the garden matters.

Gardeners  should make sure that their plants face the sun to get the proper amount of sunlight and that their gardens are getting the proper amount of water – and an irrigation system is important.

Opt for a raised garden

Raised gardens are a form of  gardening  where the soil is raised and enclosed, extending the planting season, reducing weeds, and a more controllable environment for your crops and plants.

It’s important to know which crops to plant and which ones to avoid.

You don't need space to garden

While  gardening in containers  is generally easier than doing so in the ground, here are a few important tips to help keep your plants healthy:

  • Make sure the container has drainage holes
  • Clean the container before use, wash out soil from previous seasons to avoid disease
  • Avoid using toxic containers
  • Place gravel at the bottom of the container to make sure soil doesn’t drain

Conquering hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are a popular garden plant but can be difficult to conquer.

To successfully grow them follow these tips,

  • Pick a spot that allows for part-shade
  • Water them at least three times a week but be careful not to leave your soil too wet
  • Deadhead immediately after they’ve bloomed to encourage growth
  • Dig a hole twice the width of the plant when placing it in the ground

Hydrangeas can be high maintenance, but the reward is worth the work

More on planting avocados

  • Then you need to place the glass or jar in a warm, sunny spot but out of direct sunlight
  • Change the water regularly to prevent bacteria or mold growth.
  • The top half of the pit should dry out and crack, which gives an opening for roots to grow out.
  • Keep this little root submerged until you can see the pit sprouting from the top.
  • Plant in soil one the stem is 15cm long.

You’re slicing avocados wrong - the mistake that could make them turn brown

Plant avocados now ahead of the summer.

Here are some easy steps to follow in order to  grow an avocado from its seed :

  • The first thing you need to do is to remove the pit from a fresh avocado.
  • Work out which way is up and which is down – the slightly pointier end is the top.
  • Next, you need to clean it thoroughly under warm water using a soft cloth until you are sure all the flesh is removed.
  • Take three toothpicks and stick them into the pit at even intervals – these are to help balance your pit in water.
  • Sit the bottom half of your pit in the water, the toothpicks should stop it from falling or becoming fully submerged.

Helping your seeds grow

Seed germinates best in early fall or mid-spring, according to the  Royal Horticultural Society .

However, germination cannot be sped up in most cases.

Simply put,  getting grass to grow successfully  necessitates some planning, as well as some crucial time and patience.

The RHS recommends:

  • Before you put the seeds, get rid of the weeds.
  • Dig or rotovate the land to a depth of 20 to 25cm, then add some well-rotted manure or other organic debris to help keep moisture in the soil.
  • Remove any weeds that have sprouted during the germination process.

Where to get your free solar eclipse glasses: Warby Parker, the public library and more

thumbnail

Some astronomy aficionados are paying top dollar to catch the upcoming total solar eclipse, but there are plenty of options to take in the rare astrological phenomenon for free.

If you find yourself in the path of totality, you'll want to make sure that you're using eye protection before turning your gaze upward. Experts warn against looking at the obscured sun for "even a split second," emphasizing that the solar radiation can burn the inside of your eyes and potentially cause irreversible damage.

The eclipse will take place the afternoon of Monday, April 8, with parts of states like Texas, Ohio and New York falling into the path of totality.

Normal sunglasses aren't strong enough to protect your eyes from harm. Instead, you'll need special protection designed specifically for observing an eclipse.

Luckily, both government organizations and private businesses are distributing eyewear that meets the requirements set by the American Astronomical Society.

Here's where to get your free glasses before Monday's eclipse.

Your local public library

Libraries across the nation are distributing glasses for free. To see which libraries near you have glasses available, check out this interactive map from Star Net.

Warby Parker

The eyewear brand has gone all out for the eclipse, creating an entire page on its website dedicated to the event. Warby Parker is distributing glasses free of charge at all of its retail locations. You can find the closest store to you at this link .

New York State

With a good chunk of the Empire State falling in the path of totality, New York is distributing free glasses at locations including New York State Welcome Centers and Thruway Rest Stops.

Sonic and Smoothie King

Chain restaurants Sonic and Smoothie King are offering free eclipse glasses with a purchase.

Make your own

If there's nowhere near you to get free glasses, it's simple enough to make your own. Follow these instructions from NASA to create your own viewing tool with materials that you can find around the house.

No Aloha: Olivia Rodrigo and The Breeders Reconnect Alt-Rock’s Severed History at MSG Show (Critic’s Essay)

Rodrigo inviting the '90s alt greats to be part of her story helps stitch together a rock timeline that never should have been interrupted -- and makes for an emotionally overwhelming live experience.

Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia Rodrigo Makes MSG Debut: 8 Best Moments From Her First NYC Guts Tour Show

Trending on billboard.

It was crushing to me, not only because it was hard to not feel somewhat personally erased by the music that defined my own adolescence being treated like a cultural dead-end, but because I felt in my bones that rock still had something to offer at that mass youth-culture level. When some people from Paramore’s team came by the Billboard offices in 2016 to play some tracks from their stellar After Laughter album, I expressed to an older then-co-worker that while I liked the songs, I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed that the band was moving in a poppier, more groove-oriented direction at a time when they were one of the few modern rock artists of any real currency left in the mainstream. He basically rolled his eyes at me that I was still holding on at all, that this deep into its seeming obsolescence, I still hadn’t embraced rock’s fate. I knew he was probably right, but I still couldn’t totally accept it. I couldn’t understand how he could totally accept it, either.

And in an act of paying-it-back that felt virtually without precedent for an artist who could rightly be currently considered one of the biggest pop stars in the world, Rodrigo handpicked one of the great underrated bands from that era to open all four of her MSG shows (and at tour’s end, her four shows at L.A.’s Kia Forum): Ohio-based Buzz Bin alums The Breeders . The other lead-in acts on the Guts World Tour are up-and-coming left-of-center pop acts with Gen Z fanbases fairly likely to overlap with Rodrigo’s own – Chappell Roan, PinkPantheress, Remi Wolf. But The Breeders, who released their debut album in 1990 and are now all in their 50s and 60s, are infinitely more likely to already be familiar to the parents in attendance than to the young teens they’re chaperoning. The band itself was stunned when Rodrigo reached out to offer them the slot: ““I thought, ‘Is she sure?” guitarist Kelly Deal, who leads the band along with frontwoman sister Kim, related to the New York Times . “Do they really mean us?’”

But in a lot of ways, the pairing remained confusing, probably even more so for the younger fans in attendance. Rodrigo embraces distortion, but rarely outright abrasiveness, which The Breeders tend to mix into even their sweetest, poppiest confections. More pressingly, while there’s no doubt much for Rodrigo and the Deal sisters to admire about each others’ songwriting, their lyrical approaches differ wildly: Both products of their respective generations, Rodrigo’s songs veer linear in narrative, direct in emotion and near-autobiographical in interpretation, while the Deals’ lean significantly more abstract, elliptical, wisecracking and resistant to straightforward reading. At a time when pop writing is largely expected to be relatable, cathartic and often explicitly diaristic, it’s a tough ask for Rodrigo’s fanbase to immediately embrace a band whose biggest hit – which Rodrigo said on MSG Night One divided her life into “before” and “after” sections the first time she heard it, understandably – is built around the chorus “Want you/ Koo koo/ Cannonball.”

But there was one truly lovely moment between audience and artist: during “Drivin’ on 9,” a country-fried highway ballad that The Breeders borrowed from alt-folkers Ed’s Redeeming Qualities for Last Splash. As the group played their sweetly swaying cover – their set’s lone totally acoustic moment – the cell phone lights slowly started going up in the audience, until they eventually blanketed the whole arena, as if the group was unleashing their rendition of Rodrigo’s towering “Traitor.” It was a somewhat awkward response for the gentle road-tripper, but it was touching to see Rodrigo’s fans really attempting to engage with the performance the best way they knew how – and the Deals were clearly moved, with Kim commenting that the headliner was going to love the crowd tonight.

I was moved, too – much more than I was prepared for. Honestly, I can’t remember a time when I was more emotionally overwhelmed by a live experience than I was watching The Breeders open for Olivia Rodrigo at Madison Square Garden. I first started getting choked up during that “Drivin’ on 9” moment, and by the time the band got to “Cannonball,” I was in full-on tears – which, needless to say, was also not a particularly appropriate fan response on my part to the rollicking alt-radio riffer.

To see the Breeders get the chance to become arena-rockers that should have long been theirs by right of their inspired ‘90s work – which has also since extended to excellent albums in the ‘00s and ‘10s – was a very powerful thing. And I do have an attachment to their songs that goes beyond the content of the songs themselves and even the memories I have associated with them. I’ve never once considered The Breeders as having articulated a specific emotion I was otherwise trying to express, or having served as the soundtrack to my life in any specifically resonant way. That doesn’t mean these songs don’t feel very much a part of me, though, of my life, of who I’ve become in the decades that I’ve lived with them. Bands like The Breeders show how we tend to overrate the particular functions that songs can perform in our lives and underrate the importance of just loving songs for what they are, and the significance that they can build in our hearts regardless of any larger context.

But I think the most affecting part of The Breeders’ performance came through its connection with Olivia Rodrigo, and her reaching across the generations to include them in her big Madison Square Garden moment. It goes beyond a new artist paying her respects to those who came before her, I think, and serves to help connect and re-strengthen a timeline that was at serious risk of being totally severed.

This point was driven home by Rodrigo’s own headlining set, which certainly contained its fair share of acoustic balladry and folky detours, but which both began and ended with full rock righteousness, with her fans enthusiastically embracing its harder-edged moments as the true tone-setters for the evening. No one would’ve confused her set for The Breeders’ relatively static setup: Rodrigo commands the stage like the pop star she is, with costume changes and video montages and dance numbers and everything else you’d expect from one of 2024’s biggest artists. But the alt-rock elements were no mere affectation or sonic window dressing – hearing Rodrigo wail “Each time I step outside/ It’s social suicide” over gnawing Nirvana chords during “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl” felt as genuinely and awesomely ‘90s as anything the Deal sisters brought to the stage on Monday night.

Alternative radio isn’t currently playing Olivia Rodrigo or many other female artists, either; you have to scroll down to St. Vincent at No. 21 on this week’s chart to get to the first woman. But in 2024, it just doesn’t matter nearly as much: If Olivia Rodrigo wants to play rock music, she can have all the success in the world doing so without getting permission from the gatekeepers first, as long as her audience embraces it. She can remake the rock world in whatever image she wants, because her co-sign is infinitely more meaningful than radio’s anyway, as opener Chappell Roan has found out the past month and a half. Since starting on the Guts World Tour in late February, Roan’s seen her weekly official on-demand U.S. streams more than triple, from 3.7 million to nearly 11.7 million, according to Luminate — a truly insane boost for any tour’s opening act.

This was all swimming around my head, consciously and subconsciously, as I was fighting back tears while singing along to “No Aloha” and “Do You Love Me Now” on Monday night. I was thinking about how great The Breeders sounded in a massive arena, and how happy I was to get to see them in that setting after all these years. I was wondering how much more emotional the experience must be for those parents in the building, and imagining the conversations they’d have with their kids on the trip back home. I was thinking about how relieved and grateful I was that my co-worker was actually wrong back in 2016, that it was worth holding onto the idea that rock music could still be pop music. And I was already dreaming about who the next Olivia Rodrigo might end up being for the next rock era.
