Pets are a great blessing in anyone’s life. They are the only ones who love us unconditionally. Pets always offer us everything they have without asking for anything in return. The main aim of any pet’s life is to make their owner happy. Nowadays, even the term ‘owner’ is changing. People prefer their pets as kids and to themselves as parents. This is how the relationship between pets is evolving. People treat them no less than humans. For instance, they celebrate their birthdays; get those matching outfits and more.

In my opinion, I feel the pets rightly deserve it. The most common pet you can find at anyone’s place is dogs. A man’s best friend and the most faithful animal, a dog. I also have a pet dog that I love to bits. We got him when he was a little baby and have watched him grow into a beautiful dog. All my family members love him with all their heart. We love his silly antics and cannot imagine our lives without him. We named him Sasha.

Sasha – My Pet Dog

My father adopted Sasha when he was a little baby. His friend had given birth to puppies and they decided to put the puppies up for adoption. We convinced our father to get one for us. Considering they knew our family well, they immediately agreed. Little did we know that our lives would change forever after his entrance.

Sasha came in like a blessing for our family. He belongs to the breed of Labrador. Sasha was black in colour, pure coal black. He came in as a puppy with his cute little paws and eyes. We couldn’t stop gushing over this beauty. My siblings used to fight with each other as to who will get the maximum time to play with Sasha.

As and when Sasha grew up, he learned various tricks. We trained him to follow our instructions and he even learned a few tricks. We loved showing him off to our colony friends and relatives. I always took Sasha out with me as he loved taking a walk on the road.

I remember I even got a bow for him from my pocket money. Sasha loved it and wagged his tail in excitement. A Changed Life

Before having a pet dog, we didn’t know what all we would experience. After Sasha came into our lives, he changed it forever. Sasha changed the meaning of loyalty for us. We learned how this faithful animal always worked for our happiness and safety.

Certainly, Sasha made us better human beings. We are now more compassionate towards animals. There was one instance where the stray dogs were going to harm a kitten, and to our surprise, Sasha saved that little kitten and got her home.

In other words, we have learned a lot of things from Sasha. He protected us when we slept at night. He tried to cheer us up whenever anyone of us was sad. Sasha’s obedience inspired me a lot to be kind to my parents. Therefore, all the credit for changing our lives goes to Sasha.

Dogs are the best choice as a pet because they understand their owners very well and support them in whatever condition they are in. I decided to get a dog as a pet after realising my affection for both street dogs and other people's pet dogs. Dogs are regarded as a person's best friend. I was not sure which dog breed to choose, but in the end, I decided on the Pomeranian breed. I went to a pet store to check out the different coloured Pomeranian dogs. I was highly confused but at the end chose an adorable brown coloured Pomeranian. I named him 'Benji', he was only a month old when I took him home.

Dogs are the only animals who love their owners without any reason. They start trusting their owners completely. On the day when my mother and I were going to purchase my pet dog, I was overcome with excitement. We both have the same love of animals, so I was sure she would be confused once she entered the pet store. She questioned me after entering the store as to why I wanted a dog only as a pet rather than a cat or bird, and I told her that I have a special affection for dogs.

Benefits | Dogs can help their owners with their mental health issues, can teach us new skills, can act as living examples of what their owners have taught them, and, most importantly, need regular exercise, which also helps us to maintain good cardiovascular health.

We discussed which dog to buy for the complete two hours before deciding on a white Persian dog with large black eyes and a short tail. I was staring at my new pet the entire time I was returning home and I named him Pluto. Finally, we ended up happily having a handsome dog that improved our health and mood and we love him dearly.

New Member Of Our Family

I decided, along with my mother, to purchase a puppy from a pet store on December 10, 2022. We went in the evening to finalise the puppy after she gave her permission. At the pet store's corner, I noticed a stunning white pomeranian sitting quietly and observing us. He was sitting with his gorgeous fluffy tail moving from left to right. We looked at many dogs, but this one grabbed my attention. I asked the shop owner if I could hold him in my hands, and he agreed. The dog was so kind that he began to play with me and lick me. After choosing to take him home with me, we proceed to buy his food, treats, leashes, toys, and shampoo.

My dog, Shero, accompanied me around the entire store. He seemed genuinely happy to be with me, which thrilled me. I had some concerns about whether he would be comfortable in the car and whether he would become anxious while driving, but nothing of the sort occurred. Instead, he reacted exactly the opposite of what I imagined. He sat next to me in the car the entire time we were travelling home and was enjoying the scenery. I got the feeling that he perhaps thought that he could now enjoy his life in the outside world.

First Experience At Home

After returning home, he initially felt some fear of unfamiliar objects, smells, and environment, but with time he got attached to everything. He was jumping on the bed, the couch, and playing with the toys we had bought for him. After some time, he began to bark, and as it was my first day with him, I was unaware that he did this when he was hungry. After finishing his meal, he slept for two to three hours. My family and I talked about his trainer while he was asleep so that he might learn new tasks that would make him stronger and more active, both of which are excellent for his health. I was staring at him while he slept and wondering how the atmosphere in the house had changed. The atmosphere in the home was now cheerful, joyful, and entertaining. He is now a member of our family.

As Cody grew into an adult dog, his true golden retriever personality blossomed. His cute little face was so fluffy I could just hug and kiss him all day. I bought a soccer ball, with which he and I used to play all day long. Being in school, I used to think about what is he doing right now or today I’ll take him for a walk to the park, where we will play soccer, etc.

His unconditional love has always been there as a stress reliever. His loyalty, unwavering support and companionship have been with me in my good and bad times. Now that he is an adult, I have taken all his responsibilities like feeding him, bathing him, taking him for walks, etc.

Mario once fell ill due to a cold, and whatever he was eating, he was not able to digest it. I got s worried that I took him to the vet, where he was given a penicillin shot as an antibiotic treatment. I was so scared that I held him with my hands and he was lying there, unconscious. Two hours later, he gained his consciousness and started licking my face. All my sorrow and sadness vanished away in a second, seeing his beautiful eyes and fluffy tail wavering all over the table.

Now that he is completely healthy, I take him for his walks every day, where he is always filled with excitement to explore the other world. As a loyal friend, my dog, Mario, has never demanded anything except for 3 times of meals and a walk. Whether it’s a game of fetch in the backyard or a stroll in the park, every shared moment is a treasure that adds richness to my life.

I have a pet dog and his name is Chandler. He is named after my favourite “Friends” character and has been with us for the last nine months. His colour is golden and his tail is bushy as he is a golden retriever. Chandler is very energetic and likes to play a lot with all of us. He runs extremely fast when chasing cats. He is very playful. We take good care of his diet. I give him foods like eggs, meat, fish, bread, rice, etc. Whenever I return from school, he wags his tail in joy and jumps and hops all around me as if celebrating. Chandler knows everybody in our family and whenever he sees a new person, he barks at them, but he is sweet and does not bite anyone. He is very intelligent as well and gives us handshakes with his paws. He understands whatever we tell, and on command, he sits and rolls over too. He is an essential part of our family and we all love him a lot.

Besides, my brother was a toddler then and my mother feared that he might catch infection. She tried to explain all these points to me. But I did not listen to any of her explanations. I went to my grandmother and requested her to convince mom to get a pet dog. My grandmother also tried to explain the same points. However, I kept convincing her for days and she finally agreed to take care of the dog for half the day until I came home from school. The rest was all my responsibility.

Somehow, I also convinced my father. Since he has a liking for dogs, convincing him was not that difficult. So finally my mother had to agree. We went to a nearby pet shop and my heart went drooling over this 2 months old German shepherd who was sleeping peacefully in a small cage. I knew at once that I wanted to keep him.

Roger won everyone’s Heart

Roger was so small and cute that almost everyone in my family fell in love with it as soon as I brought him home. My favorite pet is a Labrador named Anna. She is a beautiful full breed Labrador. She is my best friend. She was presented to me as a birthday gift by my parents when I was in graduation. She was just 6 months old and was the most beautiful dog I had ever seen with her light green emerald eyes, thick golden brown fur and two small drooping ears.

It was the time, when I finished my schooling and entered a whole new era of my life. Soon enough, I realized the importance of her loyalty and companionship. She was not only a vigilant watchdog but a swift hunter. I remember taking her out for long runs at the helipad close to my place.

We used to play fetch the ball every evening. It was not only to make her fit but simply because I loved spending time with her. She was indeed a true friend. Every day after college, she would come running towards me and lick my feet as a warm greeting, then just sit next to me as I would have my meals.

There were times, when my parents went for long vacations that were the time when I and Anna spent most hours together, her eyes were a wonderland. She responded in ways, no one could. She was a dog, but listened and responded better than a human.

She stimulated my existence with her strong personality and emotions. I used to feed her twice a day and special treats for rolling over, shaking hands and being obedient. Dogs are omnivorous, they can eat both vegetarian and non-vegetarian but their body type is such that meat, eggs are essential for their overall health. Dogs are intelligent animals.

They are good swimmers, have an excellent vision and hearing sense. Anna received her immunization and treatment as a pup. She had a special bathing soap, shampoo and a brush. I made sure to bathe her every Saturday. She used to play happily around in water and spoil my clothes by brushing off water off her onto me. She was a very important member of the family and attracted love from everyone. She was that lovable and pure.

She gave birth to eight beautiful black and golden retrievers. It was the most beautiful moment of our lives, as my best friend was now a mother. We took good care of all the puppies and captured all the beautiful mother child moments.

What Can Having Pets Teach You About Parenting?

A dog isn’t a “starter kid,” but with the right amount of self-awareness, raising one does have things to teach future parents of humans.

When I brought my new dog, a 4-year-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Grace, home for the holidays last year, I was nervous. I didn’t know how she’d react to the unfamiliar environment, so I kept scanning the floor for items she might swallow. She wasn’t perfectly house-trained yet, so I was constantly watching to see if she started to walk in circles—a sign that she has to go to the bathroom.

After a week with no trouble, my mom gently called me out. “You’re being a helicopter parent,” she said. “Grace might do better if you stopped hovering over her.” The comment jarred me. I’d always assumed that I’d be a good nurturer, but now that I was actually responsible for another creature, it seemed like I might not have the touch. I started to worry about what this meant not only for Grace but also for my future kids. Was I doomed to hover over them one day as well? Or, if I learned to let go a bit with Grace, could I carry those lessons forward when I had my own child?

The idea of a dog as a “starter kid” is a cliché at this point—but there’s a bit of truth to it. Millennials have delayed having children , adopted dogs in droves , and frequently consider those pets to be as much a part of the family as any human, as my colleague Katherine J. Wu recently reported. Many are raising a dog before they have a baby. In fact, in a 2021 survey commissioned by a pet-food brand, four in 10 dog and cat parents said that they got their pet to test whether they were ready for a kid. Of course, raising animals is in many ways not at all comparable to raising children, and no one who doesn’t actually want a dog should get one as a practice baby. That said, pet parenting does have things to teach future parents of humans. Some connections, such as “potty” training, are obvious. But on a broader level, getting a pet requires taking responsibility for another living thing’s well-being. The experience can offer insight into your tendencies as a caregiver—and, with the right amount of self-awareness, a chance to grow.

Parenting preparation is a spectrum. Reading advice books is on one end of it: You might pick up a few tips, but the learning is just theoretical. Caring for human children, perhaps by babysitting, gets you closer to the actual experience. Experts told me that it’s close to the best practice you can have, though the average person’s opportunities to do it are dwindling as teen babysitters grow rarer and families tend to be smaller, giving kids fewer opportunities to watch younger siblings and cousins. Responsibly raising pets (especially those that require more attention, such as cats and dogs) is somewhere in between; dogs are probably the most relevant, given how much work training one takes. Crucially, caring for a pet lets you learn by doing, which Susan Walker, a professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota who specialized in parenting education, told me is more effective than reading generic advice.

Both dogs and kids need help learning how to behave—though with dogs it’s of course more a matter of simple dos and don’ts than the morality of right and wrong we try to instill in children. But some of the principles of good dog training do translate to teaching young kids. Experts generally agree that for both groups, positive reinforcement should guide discipline. Whether the problem is a toddler coloring on the wall or a puppy chewing on your shoes, the parenting coach Elisabeth Stitt recommends responding with a quick correction followed by a warm distraction. You might say no and then give the dog a toy bone and the child a coloring book. Perhaps most important is to keep these expectations consistent and to repeat lessons over and over. “Parents will say to me, ‘I’ve told my kids a million times,’” Stitt told me. “Good. That’s what you need to do.” Grace still pulls on her leash at least once a day when I walk her—and each time I have to stop, wait for her to come back, and then give her a treat when we start back up again.

What’s more, both dogs and infants have no choice but to communicate without words. Learning to read a dog’s cues can help strengthen the skill of “perspective taking,” or the ability to see the world through another’s point of view, Gail Melson, a professor emeritus at Purdue University studying families and animals, told me. Developing that muscle might make it easier to later interpret a child’s early attempts at self-expression. Having firsthand knowledge that what seems like misconduct could actually be a signal of fear, boredom, or frustration is helpful for developing the patience required for parenting. Rather than reacting with anger, perhaps you’ll know to think, “ What’s the motivation behind that behavior, and how can we meet whatever those needs are? ” Shelly Volsche, a professor at the University of Wisconsin at River Falls studying human-animal interaction, explained to me.

And if you get a dog with a partner, you’ll be doing all of this learning alongside them. Think of it as a rehearsal for some of the logistics of co-parenting. “A lot of times, couples get blindsided because they don’t necessarily have a plan for who’s going to feed the baby or who’s going to diaper the baby, who’s going to get up at night,” Darby Saxbe, a University of Southern California professor studying the transition to parenthood, told me. Dogs aren’t nearly as much work, but you still have to divvy up who walks and feeds them. Doing that fairly “might set a healthy precedent” for splitting child-care duties, Saxbe said. When you do eventually have a kid, perhaps you’ll already have a framework for discussing a shared approach.

But more than chore charts and discipline, raising a pet—and, to a far greater extent, raising a child—demands making sacrifices. No matter how tired you are in the morning, you have to get out of bed to soothe a crying baby or to take a dog out to pee, Saxbe explained. Workdays will get interrupted if your kid or pet gets sick. And you never get a break, unless you secure a sitter—but even in those cases, you’ll still want to be reachable in emergencies. “That is a really dramatic shift, I think, for people that have never had a baby or a pet,” Saxbe told me.

Adjusting your schedule to the rhythms of life with a dog might help make space for an eventual baby too. Perhaps you’ll have redone your budget to afford vet bills—a decision some of Laurent-Simpson’s research subjects have made. Maybe you’ll be used to staying out late less frequently to get home for your dog. You may have lined up friends who could watch a pet or a baby in a pinch; as experts told me, building community is vital for any type of caregiving.

On a deeper level, caring for a pet can spur personal reflection. You may get a window into “Who am I as a nurturer?” Volsche explained. Are you too much of a pushover? Do you dole out discipline too harshly? “The parenting styles are very similar, independent of whether we’re talking about dogs or whether we’re talking about human children, because we’re focused on the human caregiver’s behavior,” Monique Udell, a professor at Oregon State University studying human-animal interactions, told me. And, as Udell’s research has shown , the ideal parenting style—authoritative parenting—is the same for dogs and kids. Authoritative parents have high expectations—for a dog’s training or a kid’s schoolwork, say—but are caring and responsive to their dependent’s needs. Though the needs may be very different, caretakers of both pets and humans should strive for a balance of warmth and structure, Udell said.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that people with pets will take advantage of the opportunity to start mastering that balance. Unfortunately, no one I spoke with knew of any research on the transition from pet parent to human parent. Sometimes people learn through a process of “generalization,” Melson explained, and apply what they pick up in one realm to another. But at other times, learning tends more toward “compartmentalization.” And we just don’t know whether pet parents are generalizing these lessons or compartmentalizing them. That said, nearly everyone I spoke with agreed that people could learn some parenting skills from having pets—especially if they approached the process with intention.

So I’ve been trying to do that with Grace, and as I’ve grown more confident, so has she. When I first got her, she was scared of almost everything: cars, going on walks, the vacuum cleaner. My lap was her safety blanket, and I was eager to soothe her. But, with practice, I’ve gotten better at tolerating my discomfort with her discomfort. Rather than preemptively comforting her when we go somewhere new, I’ve learned to practice patience, give lots of positive reinforcement (read: treats), and gently encourage her to explore; the world really has so many things to sniff. She still recoils when motorcycles pass, but at other times, she’ll chase the leaves that drift by and pounce on pine cones. I’m there if she needs reassurance, but I’m finding that she’s turning to me, trembling, less and less.
