Applications for 2023 NCCA Writers' Prize with P250,000 grant are now open

Aspiring Filipino authors, this is your chance to get your work published. The National Commission for Culture and the Arts is now accepting entries for its biennial 2023 NCCA Writers' Prize.
In a Facebook post, the NCCA said it would choose five writers, one each in the categories of poetry (Ibaloi), novel (Filipino), essay/creative nonfiction (Bikol), short story (Pangasinense), and drama (Cebuano).
Chosen applicants will be granted P250,000 each to assist them as they finish their writing project in a year's time.
Poetry applicants must have an initial output of 10 poems with one poem per page. The final output must be at least 30 poems.
Novel applicants must have an initial output of their story's first 50 pages. The final output must have a minimum of 50,000 words.
The initial output for essay/creative nonfiction and short story applicants must have three works with at least 2,000 words each. At least 12 are required for the final output with at least 2,000 words each.
For drama applicants, the initial output should be one act for a full-length play, if not two one-act plays. The final output must be a full-length play with at least three acts, if not five one-act plays.
The final manuscript will then be endorsed to the NCCA for possible publication or staging.
Applicants are required to submit the following:
- accomplished entry form in .pdf format
- notarized declaration with consent and release in .pdf format
- curriculum vitae
- a 3 to 5 concept paper discussing the rationale and significance of the project
All entries should be addressed and submitted to the NCCA Writers' Prize Secretariat, the Program Management Division (PMD) – Arts Section, and the NCCA at [email protected] .
The deadline for applications is on June 30.

Eligibility:
- Must be Filipino Citizen from 18 years old to 35 years old, residing in the Philippines
- Open to all students and young professionals. Only one entry per person
- Must submit the typed essay in the form of PDF (1200-1500 words maximum)
- Essays must be typed in Arial font size 12 and paragraph spacing of 1.5
- Essays must be submitted in English. It must be original, relevant, with adherence to the topic, have good grammar, and unpublished.
- APCU Board of Trustees, Officers, and relatives up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity are not eligible to join the essay writing contest.

Premio Rafael Palma 2023 Writing Contest Open for Entries

MANILA, Philippines — The fifth edition of the Premio Rafael Palma, a Spanish-language youth writing contest, is now open for submissions.
The contest, which began in 2019, is aimed at Filipino college and university students. It was established to honor the Filipino writer Rafael Palma (1874–1939), who served as the fourth president of the University of the Philippines, as well as to promote “the study, practice and use of Spanish and the awareness of Hispanic-Filipino literature among the youth of the country.”
Full contest rules are available on the website of the literary journal Revista Filipina, and entries are being accepted until Feb. 20.
The winning entries will have the chance to be published in the said journal. A publishing deal from the Consejería de Educación, a diploma from the University of the Philippines’ College of Arts and Letters, and cash awards from Revista Filipina in the amounts of PH₱2,000 for the first runner-up, PH₱1,700 for the runner-up and PH₱1,500 for the third-place winner will also be given to each participant.
The winners will be awarded on April 23 in the European Languages Department of UP Diliman.
The Spanish section of UP Diliman’s Department of European Languages, Revista Filipina, Asociación Filipina de Enseñanza del Español lengua extranjera, Círculo Hispánico, UP Student Council and the Embassy of Spain in Manila are organizing the said awards competition.

NEU student wins grand prize in national essay writing contest
N EW Era University (NEU) fourth-year Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Service student Russell Alvarez was declared grand prize winner in the national essay writing contest Filipino category in line with the Freedom of Information (FOI) Philippines 4th Multi-Arts Festival 2023, organized by FOI Philippines and Presidential Communications Office.
The student from the NEU School of International Relations received his plaque of recognition and a gift check from Krizia Casey Avejar, FOI Chief of Communications and Capacity Development, and Eden Darlene Mendoza, FOI Chief of Compliance and Monitoring Division on Dec. 12, 2023.
Meanwhile, the NEU Junior Hunters won against St. Clare College in the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (Naascu) Season 21 Super Finals. They won the championship during the final games held at the Fil Oil Eco Oil Center in San Juan City on Dec. 12, 2023.
It was the second feat of the NEU Junior Hunters which also won the PSL
U21 championship earlier this year.
NEU Junior Hunters is coached by Den Velez who was hailed as the Naascu Season 21 Best Coach of the Year while star player Divine Adili was awarded as the Naascu Season 21 Most Valuable Player in the Junior Men's Basketball Division.

SHAPE-SEA Essay Writing Competition 2023 for Undergraduate Students
Deadline: August 12, 2023
Applications for the SHAPE-SEA Essay Writing Competition 2023 are open. The Essay Writing Competition shall serve as a vehicle for Southeast Asian students to raise their voice on diverse issues and lived experiences reflecting the state of the environment and human rights in the region.
Moreover, essays are expected to delve deep into intersectional issues impacting the environment at either regional or local levels. Furthermore, they strongly encourage writers to creatively come up with concrete recommendations for policy and action to address climate emergencies/injustices in ASEAN. Essays writers are urged to fully exercise critical thinking and creative expression.
Guide Questions
- How do you envision a safe, clean, and sustainable environment?
- What issues and lived experiences are (directly or indirectly) caused/impacted by climate injustice/environmental degradation at the regional, national, or local levels?
- How can ASEAN and its member states be able to fulfill its commitment to a safe, clean, and sustainable environment in all corners of the region?
- What can ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), as well as other ASEAN bodies, do more to facilitate this process?
- Experts’ Choice First Prize: Cash Prize of THB 15,000, a Certificate of Recognition, and an opportunity to present their winning essay at a regional event this year.
- Experts’ Choice Second Prize: Cash Prize of THB 10,000, a Certificate of Recognition, and an opportunity to present their winning essay at a regional event this year.
- Experts’ Choice Third Prize: Cash prize of THB 7,000, a Certificate of Recognition, and an opportunity to present their winning essay at a regional event this year.

- Open to Southeast Asian undergraduate students;
- Applicants should be currently enrolled in a Southeast Asia tertiary academic institution.
Essay Requirements
- Analytical papers are written in English within a maximum of 500-700 words (excluding title, references, and notes).
- Essays should be original and should not have been previously published elsewhere.
- Essays must be written only by one person. Font style and size: Times New Roman, 12 points, 1.5 spacing In-text citations and references must be in APA (seventh edition) format .
- Essays should be submitted in MS Word (.doc/.docx).

3. John Locke Institute Essay Competition

● Students from any country.
● Students aged 15 to 18 years by the competition deadline.
● Students aged 14 years or younger by the competition deadline are eligible for the Junior prize.
● The contest is organized by the John Locke Institute.
● Your essay cannot exceed 2,000 words.
● There are seven subjects or categories for essay submissions: Philosophy, Politics, Economics, History, Psychology, Theology, and Law.
Entry fee: Free to enter
● The best overall essay winner receives an honorary John Locke Fellowship, which comes with a USD 10,000 scholarship to attend one or more summer schools or gap year courses.
● There is also a prize for the best essay in each category. The prize for each winner of a subject category and the Junior category is a scholarship worth USD 2,000 toward the cost of a summer program.

● Students in grades 9–12 in any of the 50 states, DC, the US territories, or if they are US citizens or lawful permanent residents attending high school overseas.
● Students attending a public, private, or parochial school.
● Home-schooled students.
● Your essay should be 1,000–1,500 words.

Who may enter: High school (including homeschooled), college, and graduate students worldwide.
● The 2023 essay contest topic is marriages and proposals.
● High school students may focus on Pride and Prejudice only or bring in other Austen works.
● Undergraduate and graduate students should discuss at least two Austen novels of their choice.
● Your essay must be in MLA format and 6 to 8 pages (not including your Works Cited page).
● Your essay must be written in English.
● First place wins a USD 1,000 scholarship.
● Second place wins a USD 500 scholarship.
● Third place wins a USD 250 scholarship.

● Students in Grades 3–12. If international or homeschooled, please select your grade level based on if you were attending a public school in the U.S.
● This contest is organized by EngineerGirl.
● Students should write a piece that shows how female or non-white engineers have contributed to or can enhance engineering’s great achievements.
● You should choose one of the 20 Greatest Engineering Achievements of the 20th Century as a topic and explore the technologies developed in the last century and the new ones being developed today. Make sure to follow the specific guidelines for your grade level.
● Essays should be 650–750 words based on your grade level.

PCO calls on college students to join ‘Bagong Pilipinas’ essay writing contest

MANILA -- The Presidential Communications Office (PCO), headed by Secretary Cheloy Velicaria-Garafil, is calling all college students to join the essay writing contest anchored in the “Bagong Pilipinas” campaign of the administration.
In a Facebook post, the PCO said that the essay writing contest is part of the Communications Month Celebration in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s Proclamation No. 308, issued in August this year, declaring October as Communications Month.
Enrolled college students who wish to participate in the essay writing contest must submit their respective entries no later than 5:00 p.m. on November 20. All entries must be written in English and must not exceed 1,500 words using Times New Roman font style, size 12 font size, and single-spacing.
“Bagong Pilipinas is the theme. The piece may touch on: 1) the Filipino youth’s aspirations for a Bagong Pilipinas, or (2) the inspirational spirit that will enable this call-to-action realization, among many other narratives the writer wants to communicate,” the PCO said.
The PCO said essays should be submitted in PDF format through [email protected] with the subject format: BPESSAYWRITING ENTRY – TITLE OF ESSAY while the body of the e-mail should include: names of participants; year level; school; municipality, province region; essay writing entry text; and essay writing entry file attachment.
Criteria for judging can be accessed on the official Facebook page of the PCO.
Three regional winners will receive PhP10,000 for 3rd placer; PhP30,000 for 2nd placer; and PhP50,000 for 1st placer; while five winners for the national level will receive PhP10,000 for the 5th placer; PhP30,000 for 4th; PhP50,000 for 3rd; PhP75,000 for 2nd; and PhP100,000 for first placer. (PND)

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts is now accepting entries for its biennial 2023 NCCA Writers' Prize.
