- How Copyright Free Music Works
F inding the perfect background music can make or break a good piece of video content. Copyright laws closely protect against the unauthorized use of music in film and video projects, and licensing music tracks the old-fashioned way can be both extremely costly and time-consuming. The following 12 websites make this process easier and cheaper.
Free Background Music for Video
Royalty-free vs. creative commons.
If you are on a tight budget, then you will want to be on the lookout for public domain , royalty-free music , and/or Creative Commons music to use in your video content. Public domain and royalty-free songs are simple enough to use and fairly straightforward to acquire and integrate into any video projects you have in the pipeline.
For more information, refer to our guide on how copyright-free music works.
Creative Commons tracks, on the other hand, may require an extra step or two. Underneath the Creative Commons umbrella, there exist a handful of different licenses, some of which impose certain restrictions or limitations or require specific attribution. In the following list, we have indicated which sites offer royalty-free music and which ones offer Creative Commons tracks.
Free Music to Use in Videos
13. beatpick.

The user interface is quite ugly but the search results are varied as the engine pulls from different databases. A unique selling point for Beatpick is their full-service music selection assistance.

License Free Music for Videos
12. magnatune.
Magnatune’s appearance is a bit antiquated and their library of songs is far from being the most comprehensive but it does have a couple of unique points working in its favor. Whereas most of the music licensing sites on this list present individual tracks, Magnatune presents entire albums consisting of easily-licensable music.
This is useful if you need multiple tracks in the same style/tone to accompany a series of videos or extended runtime projects. Magnatune has also established deals with the musicians involved, meaning the artists receive 50% of the revenue generated by the site, a much higher rate than many music services.
- Musician friendly
- Full albums
- Limited database
- Antiquated design
Free Music for Videos
Magnatune is one of the more musician-friendly licensing sites out there, which is saying something these days.
Background Music for Video Free Download
11. jamendo.
Jamendo is a music website divided into two sections — one is free, the other charges a monthly or yearly subscription fee. The free section allows music listening and downloading. 10. audio jungle.
Audio Jungle also goes by the name Envato Market. The site offers a massive catalog of music starting at $5 per track and sometimes costing much, much more. The service charges per song and there is no free content offered, making audio jungle one of the pricier options if you need to license multiple songs. The large music library and robust search options ensure it is still a viable music-licensing option.
- Massive library
- Robust search
- Some low-quality tracks

If you have a budget to work with, Audio Jungle may be a good way to find the best tracks for your video content.

9. filmstro.
Filmstro stands out from other music licensing sites by curating their tracks specifically with content creators and filmmakers in mind. There are three different yearly pricing options available ranging from $99 to $499.

8. Alibi Music
Alibi Music is a great background music site for anyone looking for something very specific. The site’s search engine is pretty much unmatched by any of the other options we’ve listed so far– you can look for a specific mood, BPM, instrumentation, and more.
Alibi is trusted by a ton of industry professionals, and there’s no wonder why. It’s reasonably priced and has a ton of options to choose from (over 350,000).
- Search function
- High-quality music
- STEMS available
- Expensive blanket licensing
- Tricky Navigation
Alibi Music has high quality music and a high-powered search function. It’s a great tool for any industry professional.
7. Premium Beat
Existing as a division of Shutterstock, Premium Beat is intent on becoming the stock footage equivalent of music licensing. The track licensing process has been streamlined with a clear emphasis on ease of use.
The site is not free, however, and even after paying a monthly subscription fee, your downloads are still limited to 5 licensed tracks per month.
- Streamlined
- Monthly fee
- Limited Licenses Monthly
If Premium Beat’s pricing structure were reconfigured for added value, it would very likely place higher up on this list.

5. Moby Gratis

These songs are not public domain, royalty-free, or creative commons, instead, the site operates on an expedited application and approval process, providing music licenses to anyone who meets the designated criteria.
It will take slightly longer to receive a license for Moby Gratis tracks than it would to simply download tracks from most of the other entries on this list, but the higher-quality music will speak for itself.
- Official licensing
- Distinctive tracks
- Smaller catalog
- Licensing takes time
If you are in a rush and need music immediately, Moby Gratis will not be your best choice. Otherwise, it just might be the top option.

4. incompetech.
Incompetech is perhaps the most well-known royalty-free music website. It is popular for a reason, there is a wide range of genres and moods to explore and the user interface is as fast and simple as could be. But, with this popularity comes one significant drawback. Because Incompetech is so widely used, many of the tracks offered have already been incorporated into numerous video projects ad nauseam. There is a decent chance that any given track you pick has already been used by dozens if not hundreds of other creators. If you want originality, you may want to look elsewhere.
- Huge catalog
- Great variety
- Search by mood
- Many basic tracks
- Overlap in styles
Incompetech’s catalog size and ease of use make it one of the quickest and most efficient sources for finding background music for your video content
3. CC Mixter
CC Mixter is designed specifically for Creative Commons music. The site separates tracks by their specific Creative Commons licenses and explains what each license means and how to properly attribute every track.
There is no sign-up or application process, tracks are immediately available to you to use for free.
- Easy to use
- Clear explanations
Many musicians upload their music directly to CC Mixter and only require credit to be given when their tracks are used in commercial projects.

The database of the YouTube Audio Library may be slightly more limited, but the interface, user experience, and general ease of use give the YouTube Audio Library the edge. You will need a YouTube account to access the Audio Library.

How to Pick the Best Background Music for your Film and Video Projects
Anyone with even the slightest knowledge, or a passing interest, in the film and tv world knows just how important getting the fitting soundtrack and sound effects is to your overall production.
When it comes to the soundscape you are creating for your project, there are a number of types of music that come into play. The act of selecting the right music for videos and film projects is a tricky one that only improves with experience.
There’s the background music, usually referred to as the ‘score’ as well as a soundtrack which comes in the form of tracks and songs (typically these would be existing output that’s used in a film) and finally, you have sound effects, and these are used for a number of purposes from recreating a sound that wasn’t picked up on a shoot or are added and emphasized for dramatic effect.
For the purposes of this article, we are primarily discussing background music and the ways it can be used to enhance your production, as well as where you can find the best background music around.
Using Background Music
If you’ve ever watched any film or video footage before background music has been added, you know just how important it is. Our ears are simply now attuned to this element’s addition, and it adds to our viewing pleasure. Without it, a piece will look lifeless and two-dimensional. It’s perhaps easiest to understand the importance of background music by thinking of a movie as a painting, the canvas as the imagery, and the paint as the sound.
You might want to change or adapt the background music you choose for your film and video projects. For example, depending on the feel of your project, you may want to select music that works as an original piece, or a piece that can be looped. This means you can play it over and over without disrupting the flow of the story. You can do this with a loop pedal if looping the music fits your film or video. If your scene calls for a single, never-ending track, you can skip the process of finding a composer or rights holder. But if you want to select music from an album, you’ll need to clear the rights. You can do this by directly asking the creator or getting permission through a rights management company.
Defining the Mood
The selection of background music is a great way of setting a mood. By now, we’ve all become accustomed to the sound cues that we get when we sit down to watch a movie. If you close your eyes and listen only to the background music, there’s a good chance you know what’s happening on the screen, at least in a very visceral sense.
What Genre Does Your Film or Video Sit Within?
Every genre has its own musical styles, and these are never more evident than with the background music. A horror production might have sparse music, but it could be punctuated with highs and lows to draw in the viewer to bring them to the edge of their seats.
A thriller may use background music to build up the tension; this might result in background music that is fast-paced and increasing at intervals. This is a great way to bring your viewer into the piece, to immerse them into the visuals.
Romantic movies may be less subtle and could just use searing melodic music to help you get in the mood, and a comedy could be a mixture of many styles depending on the action that’s taking place at a given point.
Finding Great Background Music
When it comes to scoring your film projects, whether that’s background music, the soundtrack, or SFX, you may at first consider using mainstream music that’s available and already ready for use. Still, the costs associated with licensing such content are very high. There’s a very good chance that the owner of the copyright license may not give you permission anyway unless you happen to be a successful filmmaker that they might be willing to give permission.
A smart alternative is to use royalty-free music providers who offer vast libraries of musical output for you to use in your film or video. These are purpose-built companies that offer such content at an inexpensive rate and offer great solutions to your filmmaking needs.
Ambient sounds are offered by these providers, and these are used to form the background music of many successful productions. Indeed, even Hollywood productions occasionally elect to use the services of royalty-free music operators, and these are particularly useful for those who regularly score film and video projects.
Royalty-Free Music
Royalty-free music has become hugely popular in recent years. This is primarily due to the vast increase in the amount of content that’s being produced, which is in turn fuelled by our voracious appetite when it comes to viewing visual content.
We all spend large amounts of time viewing video content, be that on our mobile devices when scrolling through social media feeds or when we watch content on the latest streaming service that is unveiled.
The cost of using, and licensing mainstream music of any kind, is high and most budgets can’t cover such costs; and as such, a new option became popular; royalty-free music.
Royalty-free music providers offer content produced by great musicians, artists, singers, DJs, and bands. They host relevant musical professionals, and you pay a subscription fee to access that service. This has been a great help to those who work in the music industry as it provides a steady stream of income in an age when there aren’t that many other bankable options for these performers.
These royalty-free providers are now very much a one-stop-shop for directors, editors, and producers looking to make their film and video productions as professional as possible.

In the romantic comedy “Música,” Rudy is a young man who experiences the world through sound. In his ears, everyday noises become symphonies of life, a daily rhythm that distracts him from class and his girlfriend Haley ( Francesca Reale ). His mother Maria ( Maria Mancuso ) suggests Rudy date someone from their Brazilian community in Newark, New Jersey. After rebelling against these demands, he meets a fellow Brazilian American named Isabella ( Camila Mendes ) at a local fish market, and with that, Rudy starts to hear a new tune, one that’s music to his ears.
“Música” delivers what it promises: a love story, musical numbers, and a celebration of Brazilian culture, starting with the movie’s color-coded poster that reflects the country’s green, yellow and white flag. Through Rudy, a character based on the film’s writer and director Rudy Mancuso, we get a sense of his experience with synesthesia, a condition where sensory stimulus leads to a second sensory stimulus, i.e. a person can taste colors or hear something that triggers a visual response. Rudy experiences the latter, where everyday sounds of traffic, airplanes, kids playing in a park, people talking, and going about their lives are loud enough to disrupt his thoughts, and in the film, his experience is illustrated by musical numbers that use everyday objects as instruments in the style of the recently departed off-Broadway show “Stomp.” It’s a little “All That Jazz” in the way that Mancuso uses song and dance to illustrate his struggles to connect with others and live up to their expectations. Mancuso, who composed the music behind “Música,” uses puppetry, animation and innovative production design to further his creative vision. Some songs and sequences don’t always hit the right notes—the songs the busker sings at the train station are among the movie’s weakest points. But then there are show-stopping moments—like a long take of Rudy running around town to keep the three women in his life happy using different settings and props—that are truly impressive, elevating this romantic comedy a cut above the straightforward “boy-meets-girl” setups that treat visual style like an afterthought.
Despite a few unfinished edges and missteps, there’s much to savor in Mancuso’s feature debut. In addition to the film’s romantic plot, Mancuso, who co-wrote the film with Dan Lagana , explores his own connection to Brazilian culture. He easily slips between speaking English and Portuguese on several occasions; even on a date, he saves room for his mother’s home cooked feijoada; bossa nova beats and samba dance moves are woven seamlessly into the film’s musical fabric, and in one hilarious sequence at a restaurant, he gulps several rounds of cachaça, perhaps the most in any American movie. Mancuso also addresses some of the thornier sides to sticking so close to home, like how his mother Maria (played by Mancuso’s real mother) insists he settle down with another Brazilian girl. He also faces Haley’s parents’ ignorance about his country when they assume he speaks Spanish like their Central American housekeeper, and Rudy has to consider whether to correct them or let it slide to keep the peace. It’s likely that more than a few second and third generation children of immigrants will find something to relate to in Mancuso’s film, but at the same time, it feels so unique because of how rarely we see the Brazilian-American experience on screen.
That celebratory spirit extends to Mancuso’s relationship with scene-stealing co-star, his mom. Their dynamic in the film is even livelier than Rudy’s dates with Isabella, which feel more like a glowing idealized version of what could be, and Haley, the girlfriend whose goals and plans for the future no longer align with what our main character wants. He wonders about leaving his mother after college and is clearly very close with her despite her dismissal of his artistic pursuits and disapproval of his dating choices, which may sound like familiar feedback from some of our own parents. Over the credits, Mancuso’s childhood photos unfold alongside the names and titles of the cast and crew, making “Música” feel as much of a love letter to her as it is to the music that inspires him and the culture that shaped him. Right to the end, “Música” becomes more than just another bland romcom. It’s about finding love when living with a disability, it’s about finding music wherever it may be, and it’s about our connection to our culture and our family.

'Joker 2' is a musical starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga — here's everything we know
- A "Joker" sequel titled "Joker: Folie à Deux" is set for release on October 4.
- The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
- The film is a musical and will reportedly include at least 15 new versions of well-known songs.
Joaquin Phoenix is brushing off his dancing shoes and reapplying clown makeup to reprise his role as Arthur Fleck in Todd Phillips' upcoming "Joker" sequel.
"Joker: Folie à Deux" stars Phoenix as the titular DC Comics villain and Lady Gaga as the iconic character Harley Quinn.
Since Warner Bros. debuted the first trailer at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday, the internet has been buzzing with anticipation for "Joker 2." It's no surprise considering the response to Phillips' 2019 film "Joker," which was the first R-rated movie to cross $1 billion globally at the box office and won two Oscars for best actor (Phoenix) and best original score (Hildur Guðnadóttir).
With a reported $200 million budget for "Folie à Deux," the stakes couldn't be higher.
Here's everything we know about the "Joker" sequel.
The 'Joker 2' cast includes Phoenix and Gaga, plus some new faces
Deadline reported in 2022 that Zazie Beetz would reprise her role as Sophie Dumond in the sequel. In the first film, her character, a single mom who lives in the same apartment as Arthur, seems like Arthur's love interest until a major plot twist reveals that their budding romance is a figment of Arthur's imagination.
Deadline later reported several more actors who landed roles in "Joker 2": Brendan Gleeson ("The Banshees of Inisherin"), Catherine Keener ("Being John Malkovich"), and Harry Lawtey ("Industry").
Related stories
The trailer for "Folie à Deux" also revealed that actor and comedian Steve Coogan has a surprise role in the movie.
The sequel is a musical and will reportedly include at least 15 covers of popular songs
The first trailer showed Arthur and Harley dancing on rooftops, stages, and the streets of Gotham City. According to Variety , the movie will be "mostly a jukebox musical," and contain at least 15 new versions of "very well-known" tracks.
"Joker 2" being a musical isn't too far out of left-field considering the first film contained musically driven moments like Phoenix's villain memorably dancing on a set of stairs in the Bronx.
"I think people will be surprised. I don't think it's going to be what they expect, around it being musical," Beetz told Variety in June. "We all sort of express musically and dancing in our lives day-to-day. I think it's going to work really well."
Director Phillips shared similar comments at CinemaCon when asked if the movie is a musical.
"We never really talked about it like that, but I like to say it's a film where music is an essential element. To me, that doesn't veer too far from the first film," he said. "Arthur's weird and aloof and all these things"
"That informed a lot of the dancing in the first film... it didn't feel like that big of a step here," he added. "It's different, but I think it'll make sense when you see it."
The 'Joker 2' plot will focus on the Joker's romance with Harley Quinn
"Joker" centered on Arthur's descent into villainy after becoming disillusioned by his life as a struggling comedian in Gotham City. At the end of the film, he is locked up in Arkham Asylum and is seen speaking with a social worker.
Plot details surrounding "Joker 2" remain tightly under wraps, but the first trailer shows Arthur and Harley's first meeting at Arkham Asylum. Unlike the comics, though, this version of Harley is a fellow inmate, not Arthur's psychiatrist, at the asylum. After presumably breaking out of the asylum together, the pair are seen dancing and causing mayhem in town.
The 'Joker: Folie à Deux' release date is Friday, October 4
The film arrives in theaters this fall.
Imax CEO Richard Gelfond told Business Insider's Jason Guerrasio at CinemaCon that "Joker 2" will also be available to watch in Imax 70mm — a format typically reserved for large-scale movies directed by filmmakers like Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
