  • Integrated Reasoning —which measures the ability to analyze data and evaluate information presented in multiple formats
  • Quantitative Reasoning —which measures the ability to analyze data and draw conclusions using reasoning skills
  • Verbal Reasoning —which measures the ability to read and understand written material, to evaluate arguments and to correct written material to conform to standard written English
  • Analytical Writing Assessment —measures the ability to think critically and to communicate ideas

All You Need To Know About The GMAT Structure

Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA):

The Analytical Writing Assessment is generally known as the “essay” section. It assesses the writing skills of a candidate. This section has only one essay writing. This is the only segment of the test that is not multiple-choice based. These essays are marked by a human grader and a computer grading system. The score is then averaged for your final score. You will be given 30 minutes to complete this section. The scores are marked in the range of 0-6.

You will be provided with a short argument. Instead of presenting your viewpoint, you are required to criticize the argument and analyze the accuracy of the author’s evidence and reasoning.

GMAT Integrated Reasoning (IR):

This section consists of a total of 12 questions which may have multiple parts. These are multi-source reasoning questions. A time duration of 30 minutes is given to complete this section. The scores are marked in the range of 0-8.

Data Sufficiency:

Data Sufficiency question type consists of a question with two statements. You have to determine whether the given statements provide sufficient data required to answer the question. GMAT math requires you to recognize quickly the information you would need to solve the problem and to capably eliminate answer choices. There are 17 or 18 questions of this type.

Problem Solving:

Problem Solving is a typical test question type. You'll be provided with a question and five possible answer choices for it. This question type uses the math of high school–level up to algebra and plane geometry. This is to test your critical thinking skills. There are 19 or 20 questions of this type.

Verbal Reasoning:

The GMAT Verbal section is designed to assess your command of written English, and ability to analyze arguments and read critically. You will be provided with 75 minutes to complete this section. The scores are marked in the range of 0-60. There are a total of 41 questions in this section. There are three question types in this section:

Critical Reasoning:

GMAT Critical Reasoning questions test the skills in making, comprehending arguments, and devising a plan of action. You will be provided with a short argument or a sequence of statements and a question relating to it. To score well in the GMAT Critical Reasoning questions, you need to understand the structure of arguments and need to have a thorough logical analysis of the relations between evidence and conclusions. This section contains approximately 11 questions.

Sentence Correction:

In this type of question, you will be provided with typically long and involved sentences. A part of the entire sentence will be underlined, and you are required to find the best adaptation of the underlined section out of the original or one of four alternatives. The sentence may contain no or one, two, or more errors. This section contains approximately 16 questions.

GMAT Reading Comprehension:

These types of questions assess your critical reading skills. More specifically, these questions assess your ability to summarize and comprehend the main idea, make conclusions based on information in a text, analyze the logical structure of a passage, and infer the author's tone and attitude about a topic. You will be provided with an academic reading passage on a topic related to social science, business, biological science, or physical science. You will then have to answer approximately 14 questions about the text.

Before you decide to appear for any exam, it is essential to understand the area of subjects and what they cover. Therefore, the GMAT exam Syllabus is what you should be most aware of if you are looking forward to applying for a business and management university abroad.

GMAT is one of the most widely taken exams by graduates. It stands for Graduate Management Aptitude Test. Many of the Top B-Schools in the world have GMAT Scores as their eligibility criteria. GMAT syllabus and eligibility, both are important to know before you book the exam. Here we are talking about things included in the Syllabus of the GMAT. Before that, here are some of the useful links:

There will not be a different GMAT syllabus for MBA or any other course, all the candidates applying for master’s courses will have to face the same syllabus of GMAT. Knowing what you will be facing in your GMAT exam is important, to prepare it accordingly. The GMAT question pattern has 4 sections, which are explained below in the syllabus.

GMAT Analytical Writing:

This section will have topics, on which the candidate will have to write, or a passage may be given and the candidates have to answer the questions based on it. The GMAT pattern and syllabus for this section are huge and varied as the topic of the passage could be any topic of general interest. You should focus on the structure of the answer and not the arguments presented.

What to Expect?

GMAT Analytical writing is an assessment of English language abilities and how one can analytically think over an argument or statement provided to them. It is important to put your ideas into words and communicate clearly. Keep in mind you do not have to put your views to the test, but the best analytical argument and counter-argument in this section.

You will have a time of 30 minutes for this section. (Detailed information at GMAT Exam Pattern) You can take the first few minutes to think and roughly understand how you will be structuring your essay. Use your time optimally, as you will also need to time reread and correct the essay in the end. . Now you know about the GMAT exam pattern of the Analytical Writing section.

How will it be evaluated?

There are two ways analytical writing is assessed by GMAT.

  • An Electronic system will evaluate the structure and language of the essay. It also evaluates the relevance to the topic in your writing piece.
  • Then there is a group of trained evaluators who assess the section, keeping these factors in mind: important features of the argument, how one has organized and developed the ideas, and if the candidate has used logical reasoning and examples to prove their point or not.

GMAT Quantitative Section:

The GMAT Quant syllabus comprises the math of the high-school level. GMAT math syllabus comprises the following topics:

  • Arithmetic – topics such as fractions, integers, roots and powers, probability, statistics, etc
  • Algebra – knowledge of variables and functions, as well as how to solve different kinds of equations.
  • Geometry – the properties of geometric objects, including triangles, quadrilaterals, solids, circles, cylinders, etc as well as coordinate geometry.
  • Word problems – a combination of arithmetic, algebraic, and geometric principles to solve problems.

These 4 types of questions are covered in the GMAT mathematics syllabus. This section must be prepared well by practising as much as you can, otherwise, a minor mistake will affect your overall score. Get more information here: Complete Guide for GMAT Quantitative Aptitude Section.

According to the GMAT Syllabus, there are two types of questions asked in Quantitative Aptitude. Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency. Both the questions can be solved using the topics given above paired with some analytical skills and reasoning skills. However, those parts are minor and Mathematical skills are emphasized. In GMAT quantitative syllabus you have to emphasize Mathematical skills.

There will be five options given for each answer and the grades will be rewarded for the right answer. Keep in mind that you are not allowed to use the calculator in this section. This is the Quantitative Section of the GMAT preparation syllabus.

Verbal Skills:

The next section in the GMAT exam 2022 pattern and syllabus is the Verbal Reasoning section. The GMAT verbal syllabus comprises the following topics:

  • The rhetorical construction of the sentences
  • Critical reasoning
  • Reading unseen passages
  • Sentence correction related to finding an error or omission
  • Misplaced modifiers
  • Subject-verb agreement
  • Countable Vs Uncountable
  • Parallelism

Here is the GMAT detailed syllabus of the Verbal Reasoning section. There are three types of questions in Verbal. Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, and Sentence Correction.

  • Reading comprehension has passages from physical and biological sciences, social sciences and humanities, and business-related fields. The goal is to interpret the text given and answer the questions that follow that.
  • In Critical reasoning, a short passage is given to the candidate and one has to choose an answer from the options given below.
  • In sentence correction, there are many types of questions. The emphasis on sentence correction would be on Grammar.

Integrated Reasoning Section:

This is the newest addition to the GMAT Test Syllabus. This section will have questions of the following types:

  • Multi-source reasoning
  • Table analysis
  • Two-part analysis
  • Graphics interpretation

GMAT Integrated reasoning is one’s ability to take in large amounts of data and interpret them to reach the decision best for a hypothetical outcome. The question can be a combination of all three, therefore the type: Multi-Source. Table Analysis and Graphical Interpretation are on the same lines. (edited and bullets)

  • In Multiple Source reasoning, the data to interpret would be from tables, graphics, diagrams, and text and answers.
  • Table Analysis has data in the excel sheet form.
  • In graphical interpretation, there may be charts, graphs, bars, and other visual representations of Data.
  • Two-Part Analysis covers a wide range of topics. It has problems combining subjects like verbal and quantitative

GMAT 2024 overview – What is the GMAT exam?

The GMAT is the leading computer-adaptive standardised test used by over 2100 universities and colleges worldwide to gauge applicants’ competence for their MBA, Master of Finance, Master of Accountancy, and doctoral-level business programs.

It tests whether the applicants have the skills necessary to succeed in business school. While it doesn’t test raw business knowledge, it does evaluate relevant core skills through a comprehensive range of questions spanning four sections – quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, integrated reasoning, and the analytical writing assessment.

GMAT 2024 highlights

Difference between the gmat focus edition and the current gmat exam.

From October 2024, students can choose between the GMAT Focus Edition and the normal GMAT. The new revamped GMAT Focus is shorter, more efficient, and more flexible in its test-taking approach. It has only three sections with fewer questions and allows equal amounts of time for each section, unlike the current GMAT. Some new topics in Data Interpretation and insights have replaced older sections, such as AWA and IR. For more details, you can consider the table below:

You can read more about the new and improved GMAT pattern in our blog here – GMAT Focus Edition .

GMAT exam dates

The GMAT exam is conducted throughout the year across several Indian cities. You can choose to give it on any date at your convenience. The available dates, slots, and centres can be checked on the official website – mba.com .

You should take cognisance of your application deadlines, preparation timelines, and other important dates before confirming a date. Ensuring that you leave enough time for the official scores to be sent to your chosen colleges is crucial. This can take anywhere between 7 and 20 days. If you want to take the test multiple times to improve your score, take the GMAT well in advance.

You can appear for the GMAT consecutively after a 16-day gap. Although it is held all year round, students can only sit for it five times in a rolling 12-month period and eight times total. Be mindful of these facts before picking a final date.

GMAT 2024 registration – How to register for the GMAT?

Registering for the GMAT online is straightforward and simple. Students must visit MBA.com , choose from the two test delivery options, register, and pay to receive the test details and confirmation.

The two delivery options include online, which lets you give the test from home at any time, and test centre, which requires you to visit the nearest centre at the allotted time. You can book tests up to 6 months in advance until 24 hours before the test. Cancellation and rescheduling options are provided and can vary according to different timelines.

Most students take the GMAT exam multiple times to improve their scores. It’s important to remember that aspirants can give the test a maximum of 5 times a year and a total of 8 times before getting barred.

GMAT exam application fee

The test costs $275 or approximately Rs. 21,000. It has a score validity of 5 years, and students can choose to utilise the scores for later admissions. You’ll have to pay $30 and another $35 for every extra score report you require to get an enhanced score report. To get your AWA rescored, it’ll cost you $45.

GMAT exam eligibility

The GMAC, the exam conducting body of the GMAT, has worked hard to ensure that each student has equal and easy access to the test. They strive to eliminate discrimination based on age, caste, colour, religion, ethnicity, or nationality. So, while there are no rigid eligibility criteria that you have to meet, there are a few procedural requirements:

  • Students above 18 don’t require parental permission to take the test. Those under 18 need to get a signed letter from their parents allowing them to take the test.
  • You must carry your passport or any other acceptable form of Government-issued identity with you.
  • Candidates should have a valid undergraduate degree from a recognised university that clearly states their credentials and qualifications.
  • The GMAC leaves it up to the students to check with their respective colleges and understand their eligibility criteria. Just clearing the GMAT might not be enough to gain admission.

GMAT 2024 exam centres in India

The GMAT is held in over 115 countries. In India, there are over 30 cities with GMAT centres where one can easily take the test. Here’s a list of all those cities:

  • Visakhapatnam
  • Chandigarh
  • Bhubaneswar
  • Coimbatore
  • Tiruchirappalli

GMAT 2024 exam pattern

The GMAT has four sections, as mentioned above, each designed to test a specific set of skills.

1. The analytical writing assessment focuses on the test-taker’s skill to analyse, understand, and critique a given piece of information.2. 2. The integrated reasoning section enables students to showcase their ability to synthesise and deduce information from various sources. 3. The quant section is about solving problems through deduced reasoning and interpretation of data using simple mathematical tools. 4. The last section, verbal, tests students’ comprehension, evaluation, and communication abilities.

Students have 3 hours and 7 minutes to finish the test.

It’s a computer-based adaptive test that adjusts the difficulty level of the question according to the test taker’s competency. Simply put, every time a student answers a question correctly, the following question becomes progressively more challenging, and if they answer the question incorrectly, the next question will be simpler.

No one’s allowed to skip between questions or flag questions to answer later. Once the student has moved on from the question, they cannot return to it to alter their answer.

How is the GMAT exam scored?

Students receive a total score out of 800, apart from sectional scores that vary depending on the type of questions in the section.

The verbal and quant reasoning sections are MCQs scored from a total of 60. Scores in this section are then extrapolated to 800 using a formula that accounts for the adaptive difficulty of the questions. Integrated reasoning is graded on a scale of 1 to 8, while analytical writing scores range from 0 to 6.

According to the Graduate Management Admission Council or GMAC, the mean GMAT score is 547.35, with the vast majority of students scoring between 400 and 600. Most students aim to cross 700, putting them in the 90th percentile, often considered a benchmark score for the top 25 universities.

GMAT 2024 preparation tips

You need to begin your GMAT preparations a few months before the test. Depending on your target score, you’ll have to figure out the number of hours you’ll need to put in. Here are a few tips that can help you achieve your target score:

  • The first step is to take a GMAT diagnostic mock test. This will determine the level your skills are at currently. Moreover, it will also introduce you to the different parts, sections, types of questions, and their pertaining difficulty levels.
  • The score on your diagnostic will be your baseline score. Break it down across different categories and sections to identify your weaknesses.
  • Once you have the differences between your score and the target score in hand, you can estimate the number of hours you’ll need to put in to get there. A fair standard is that for every 10 points, you’ll need to put in 7 hours.
  • Use the ‘Learn First, Practise Later’ methodology to refine your conceptual knowledge before delving into its application.
  • Now, create a calendar that accounts for all the topics and the corresponding time needed to master them. Break it down into a daily timetable and follow it properly.

For a more detailed plan, you can read our blog on creating a proper GMAT Study Plan to score more than 730.

What is the scope of GMAT in India?

Rahul has decided to pursue a graduate degree in management. However, he is confused as to which test to take? GMAT or CAT or some other test.  With the umpteen number of entrance tests accepted for admission into graduate management programs across business schools in India, this is indeed a pressing question faced by all MBA aspirants across the country. In this article, we analyze and discuss the scope of GMAT in India.

Here is a brief outline of the topics we will cover:

  • Indian Business Schools which accept GMAT scores
  • Cost & ROI of an MBA post GMAT
  • Salaries, profiles, and placements available after graduation
  • Advantages of taking the GMAT over other tests for admission to Indian B Schools
  • How to choose the right program according to your current profile?

Indian B Schools accepting GMAT scores

The GMAT is the most widely recognized test for admission into graduate management programs worldwide. Let us look at some statistics:

  • 250,000 tests taken in 2017 around the world
  • Available in over 114 countries
  • 600 test centers worldwide
  • Accepted by 7000+ programs at 2300+ B-schools worldwide which includes 140+ Indian Business Schools

Growing popularity and acceptance among Business School aspirants in India

In India itself, the number of B-schools accepting GMAT scores has increased from 37 just a few years ago to 140. A few reasons for this are:

  • Scheduling flexibility
  • Opportunity for score improvement
  • Score validity

The IIMs and other top Indian Business Schools accept GMAT scores as well. However, there are 2 things to note here.

  • Admission policies of Indian Business Schools are different for domestic and Foreign/NRI applicants for the full-time 2-year MBA programs.
  • For executive MBA programs, business schools do not differentiate between domestic and foreign/NRI applicants.
  • Point number 1 means that many top Indian Business Schools allow foreign/NRI applicants to submit their GMAT scores while they allow domestic students to only submit their CAT or XAT or NMAT or GATE scores.
  • Point Number 2 conveys the idea that these top Indian Business Schools accept GMAT scores for their executive MBA programs

Let’s take a look at the top 20 business schools (according to Business Today) and explore which MBA programs consider the GMAT score for admission purposes for domestic applicants.

If you are targeting any of the executive programs at IIMs in India, then the GMAT is accepted for admission besides the GRE.

Because of the many advantages that GMAT offers, it is the best alternative to other tests for admission into GMAT score accepting programs.

Cost vs. ROI of MBA in India | Indian Business Schools accepting GMAT

Cost of program and post mba salaries of b schools in india.

The below table shows the cost of pursuing a graduate-level management program from some of the top business schools in India that accept GMAT scores. The average salary offered after graduation is included in the table as well.

Profiles and Placements – GMAT in India

Top recruiters at these schools include Deloitte, Amazon, PwC, Accenture consulting, HSBC, Microsoft and more. Profiles offered to candidates include but are not limited to AVP, consultant, principal consultants, senior manager (M&A), product manager, etc.

Thus, the programs which accept GMAT scores for admission deliver generous Return on Investment. The salaries offered to graduates are at par if not greater than programs that accept other test scores for admission.

For a working professional, the opportunity cost of foregone salary is another factor that needs to be considered while evaluating the cost. The executive programs offered by IIMs or the 1-year program at ISB stands out as the better choice. Both these programs accept GMAT scores for admission.

Thus, if you are a working professional with greater than 3-4 years of work experience and are looking to get hired into leadership roles or looking to switch careers, you should strongly consider executive programs.

Advantages of taking the GMAT for Indian Business Schools

Advantage of GMAT over CAT | gmat scope in india

The GMAT has several advantages over other tests which are used to evaluate students for admission into graduate management programs. We will discuss them one by one:

  • Retaking and score improvement : Due to the flexible scheduling provided by the GMAT, it has an advantage over other tests such as CAT which are conducted only once a year. This allows you to prepare at your own pace and helps you put your best foot forward.
  • Measures and tests writing skills : Leadership roles in organizations require someone who can articulate ideas and proposals. These are the same skills that are measured in the GMAT AWA section.
  • Score Validity : Your GMAT score is valid for five years from the date of the test. This presents interesting possibilities such as taking the test and instead of enrolling in a program in the same year you can choose to gain more work experience and exposure. All the while your GMAT score stays valid, and you can apply to enroll in a program anytime within five years of giving the GMAT.

You can read more about the advantages of the GMAT over other tests such as the CAT here .

How to choose the right MBA program according to your profile?

If you are confused about which program is right for you, we will discuss different cases to help you evaluate the right option according to your profile.

Case 1: Fresh graduate

If you are a graduate fresh out of college with little or no full-time work experience, then a 2-year MBA program would be the best choice for the following reasons:

  • More time to build a solid foundation: A 2-year program allows more flexibility and time to learn and acquire in-depth knowledge. With more time to build competency and identify potential fields of specialization during the program.
  • More opportunities for internships and career changes: The longer program duration and format offer multiple opportunities for internships which help in acquiring real-world business experience. This added time gives the opportunity to experience various aspects of business and better awareness of your strengths and weaknesses.
  • More networking opportunities: The comparatively relaxed pace of the program offers the chance to build a lasting network of like-minded peers. Through internships and other group-based activities (group projects and case studies), you can develop your leadership skills which is another added benefit.

Case 2: 2-4 years of work experience:

At this stage in your career, the choice of the program depends on quite a lot on your career goals.

  • Shorter duration: This reduces the time you spend away from the market. Ensures that you re-enter the workforce sooner and reduces the opportunity cost due to foregone salary.
  • Condensed format: Helps you learn the skills needed to supercharge your career and propel you into leadership roles.
  • Change of profile or industry: If you aim to switch roles or move to a different industry then a 2-year program makes better sense. Through internships and other networking opportunities, you would get to explore the industry and make a better decision.

Case 3: Greater than five years of work experience

At this stage in your career, there are quite a few options to choose from depending on your goals and expectations after doing an MBA.

  • 1 Year full-time MBA Programs
  • Full-time Executive programs
  • Part-time Executive programs

Scope of GMAT for admission to Indian B Schools is increasing

GMAT as a standardized test is becoming more popular with time in India. We can expect more and more Indian business schools to start accepting GMAT for admission to their MBA programs. At this moment, most Indian Business Schools accept GMAT scores of domestic students for their executive MBA programs. Barring 4-5 Indian Business Schools, all accept CAT/XAT/NMAT or other tests for admission to their full-time MBA programs for Indian Students.

Soumik Purkayastha

Soumik Purkayastha, MS ’21, PhD ’24

  • Biostatistics

April 15, 2024

A native of India, Soumik Purkayastha, MS ’21, PhD ’24, first made a connection with the University of Michigan School of Public Health in 2005.

Purkayastha was born in Chandannagar, a town about the same size and population as Ann Arbor, in the state of West Bengal. He spent most of his childhood with his parents in Kolkata or with his grandparents in Chandannagar.

A visit to Ann Arbor when he was in fourth grade would leave an indelible impression on Purkayastha and set him on a path toward a career in public health.

“My father visited the Department of Biostatistics during his sabbatical year,” he said. “My mother and I were able to join him for a few months here in Ann Arbor. Later, when I was applying to graduate programs in the United States, the program here was very attractive because not only was it a great program, but I felt a personal connection to the school and the town at large.

It’s encouraging to see how the integration of data science in public health contributes to improved health outcomes. In many ways, I feel our work is meaningful and well-received not just in clinical circles but also by policymakers and the media.”

“Back in 2005, I had no way of knowing I’d be spending a good chunk of my 20s in Ann Arbor, but now I can look back and connect some dots.”

For Purkayastha, one of the most interesting things about public health is how he keeps learning about exciting ways in which public health and data science intersect.

“It’s encouraging to see how the integration of data science in public health contributes to improved health outcomes,” he said. “In many ways, I feel our work is meaningful and well-received not just in clinical circles but also by policymakers and the media.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Purkayastha had an opportunity to work on spatio-temporal forecasting of infectious diseases. His areas of focus included infection rates in India, comparing and understanding how different transmission models work, as well as developing a transmission data-driven framework to help inform public health policy.

“What I enjoyed the most was getting to learn from epidemiologists, biostatistics, economists and policy experts at a time when we were all confined to our apartments,” Purkayastha said. “It was a time when all of us struggled, yet our collective efforts at understanding what was going on in the world around us gave me a sense of purpose—and I cherish that.

“I think working in public health gives me a sense of direction on what to do with my skill set while also finding meaning in the work I do.”

Purkayastha will graduate in May with a PhD in Biostatistics from the Department of Biostatistics at Michigan Public Health. He earned a Master of Science in Biostatistics from Michigan Public Health after receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Statistics from St. Xavier’s College and the Indian Statistical Institute respectively, both of Kolkata, India.

Driving change with biostatistics

He found meaning in working with the student organization STATCOM: Statistics in the Community .

“I’m proud to say that my department is home to STATCOM, a community outreach program provided by graduate students at the University of Michigan,” Purkayastha said.

The program offers the expertise of graduate students—free of charge—to nonprofit governmental and community organizations in the areas of data organization, analysis, and interpretation.

“I have been very fortunate to find meaningful consulting work with a host of community partners,” he said. “From 2022-23, I had the honor of serving as co-president of STATCOM. It has been both challenging as well as rewarding. I expect to continue with STATCOM until I graduate.”

A few of STATCOM’s recent projects include partnerships with:

  • The Michigan Center for Youth Justice (MCYJ): STATCOM’s partnership with the MCYJ revolves around understanding the patterns of special investigations and violations occurring in juvenile justice facilities throughout the state.
  • The Detroit Housing Commission (DHC) and Poverty Solutions (PS): STATCOM has been working with the DHC and PS to investigate evictions among families with children in Detroit to reduce accompanied and unaccompanied youth homelessness rates.
  • Stand with Trans (SWT): STATCOM is collaborating with SWT to identify gaps in—and further improve—online resources that are designed to empower and support transgender youth.

Purkayastha also worked as a research assistant at the University of Michigan, studying diabetes.

“I worked with doctors and clinical experts to study diabetic foot ulcers,” he said. “They’re a major cause of amputation in US adults. With diabetes prevalence rising, understanding how these ulcers behave is crucial not only from a surgical perspective but also from a preventive viewpoint. It was a wonderful experience getting to apply my technical skills to real diabetes data to derive insights through statistics and visualization tools. I learned a lot about the disease from medical professionals as well.

“I think the work biostatisticians do is helpful for practitioners and policymakers as we learn more about disease prediction and prevention. Most importantly, the work we do in public health must be accessible and informative to the public. I think it’s incredibly important that we use all our skills to advocate for public health initiatives, policies and practices.”

In addition, Purkayastha had an internship with Apple in California, where he learned about language models.

“The future of language models in medicine, and public health is incredibly exciting,” he said. “I was also fortunate to receive the Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship for my final dissertation year. It allowed me to focus on developing new research projects and spend a lot of time thinking about cool, new ideas.”

Working in public health is ‘incredibly rewarding’

After graduation, Purkayastha will join the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Pittsburgh as an assistant professor in the fall. He will be engaged in methodological and applied public health research in addition to teaching and mentoring younger students in public health education and research.

“Soumik is a terrific example of the best of Michigan graduates; His dedication to translational biostatistics is inspiring,” said Bhramar Mukherjee , the John D. Kalbfleisch Distinguished University Professor of Biostatistics and Siobán D. Harlow Collegiate Professor of Public Health. “His work is grounded in solid theory and computation but has profound public health impact. He has been an amazing student leader through his work in departmental committees and through our flagship student organization STATCOM. I look forward to his scholarly career after graduation. I know he will make a difference.”

I think the work biostatisticians do is helpful for practitioners and policymakers as we learn more about disease prediction and prevention. Most importantly, the work we do in public health must be accessible and informative to the public. I think it’s incredibly important that we use all our skills to advocate for public health initiatives, policies and practices.”

Purkayastha said he thrives on the satisfaction of knowing that his efforts in public health are making a positive impact on the health and well-being of individuals and communities.

“I feel it can be incredibly rewarding on a personal level for many others as well,” he said. “I have seen firsthand how the work we do translates to changes in governance and policy making. Further, there is an increasing need for health data scientists, who use their data skills for the public good. And it’s not just biostatistics, public health offers a wide range of career paths and specialties, including epidemiology, health education, policy development, environmental health and global health. This diversity allows individuals to find roles that align with someone’s interests, skills and passions, creating opportunities for personal and professional growth.

“I’m satisfied with my career choices so far. Working in public health allows me to focus on a lot of things I’m interested in while building something useful for communities at large. It’s a good feeling, and I wish that for everyone.”

Erin Nixon | Maria Åstrand

Erin Nixon, an executive and entrepreneur with strong experience in strategic management and operations, has been named assistant dean of admissions and financial aid at Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Quote I’ve experienced firsthand how [Stanford GSB] transforms the trajectory of its students. Attribution Erin Nixon

Nixon, who earned both her undergraduate and MBA degrees at Stanford, returns to Stanford GSB for a role that she says “at its heart, is about identifying and connecting with smart, highly motivated people who want to make a difference in the world. It is about bringing them together to create a strong, robust community, representing a wide variety of lived experiences, ambitions, and perspectives, united by common values.”

Over her 20-year career, Nixon has built and managed teams across multiple industries and international locations. After five years at Boston Consulting Group, she joined LinkedIn, where she was responsible for growing the global talent brand business, overseeing a team based in 18 countries around the world.

She then pivoted into the world of wine, opening an acclaimed wine bar and restaurant in Barcelona, Spain. In Barcelona, she has also worked as a strategy and operations leader and advisor for a few startups and small businesses, including a tech-enabled mental health provider and a digital marketing and brand agency for wine and spirits.

“We did a comprehensive, international search for someone who could do great work in a role that requires numerous skills — representing the GSB, managing a large professional team, and assessing talent and potential,” says Stanford GSB Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Paul Oyer. “Erin has that rare combination of talents that will enable her to excel in all the aspects of this position. She is a great addition to the GSB’s leadership team.”

“I’m delighted to step into this role because I feel deeply aligned with the mission and goals of Stanford GSB,” Nixon says. “I’ve experienced firsthand how it transforms the trajectory of its students, unlocking leadership potential to drive meaningful impact in the world. Stanford is an incredibly inspiring place, and it’s a dream to be able to return to the Farm and serve the GSB community in this way.”

Nixon begins her new duties on July 1.

Essay on Inflation Rate in India for Students

Essay on Inflation Rate in India

On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine. Although this military conflict was limited to Eurasia only, it had a profound impact on the movement of goods all over the world. India, just like other countries, too, faced some economic disturbances. However, the economic policies of the RBI, backed by the Indian government, were able to mitigate the inflation rate in India. An essay on the Inflation rate in India can be a great way for students to share their thoughts, experiences, and ideas on this topic. On this page, we have discussed an essay on the inflation rate in India for students.

Essay on Inflation Rate in India in 500 Words

Inflation is the gradual rise in prices, meaning your money buys a little less over time. Imagine your favourite chips costing more next year! COVID-19 lockdowns caused a spike in inflation, making everyday items more expensive. While things are improving with inflation around 5% (April 2024), understanding inflation is key to navigating India’s economy and its impact on our daily lives.

Current Inflation Rate in India

April 2024 brings some encouraging news on the inflation front. India’s overall inflation rate dipped to 5.0%, continuing its downward trend and staying comfortably within the Reserve Bank of India’s target range. This indicates a continued slowdown in price increases compared to previous months. However, the progress is gradual, with the decrease from March being minimal.

Additionally, a concerning disparity persists between rural and urban areas. While inflation sits at 4.78% in cities, it hits rural residents harder at 5.34%, a gap that hasn’t narrowed since December 2023. Food prices also remain a point of concern, with inflation hovering around 8.66%. So, while the overall trend in inflation is positive, the uneven impact on rural areas and the continued pressure from food price hikes require ongoing monitoring.

This table shows India’s average annual inflation rate from 2014 to April 2024, highlighting a period of fluctuation with a recent trend towards stability.

Types of Inflation in India

There are two main types of inflation:

  • Cost-Push Inflation: Higher production costs (wages, materials) lead to businesses raising prices.
  • Demand-Pull Inflation: Too much money chasing too few goods leads to higher prices.
  • Hyperinflation: out-of-control price spikes fueled by money printing or economic chaos.
  • Built-in Inflation: Wages and prices spiral up as everyone expects inflation to keep rising.

Inflations vs Economic Growth in India

A rising economy like India’s is often thought to benefit from a small amount of inflation, perhaps 2–4%. Spending is encouraged, which helps businesses operate and generates employment. High inflation, though, like in the COVID era, can be a nightmare. It eats away at people’s money and makes planning harder for businesses.

The central bank of India, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), attempts to balance on a thin line. To manage inflation, they employ instruments such as interest rates. View interest rates as a tap that manages the flow of financial resources. Higher interest rates encourage people to save more and spend less, which lowers inflation by making borrowing more expensive.

An essential component of India’s economic strategy is inflation. A strong and stable economy depends on keeping inflation under control, even though a little bit of it is acceptable. We can appreciate the RBI’s efforts to control prices and guarantee a prosperous economic future for India by knowing the different types of inflation and how they interact with economic growth.

10-Lines Essay on Inflation in India

  • Inflation, the rising cost of goods and services, is a concern for India’s economy.
  • Factors like global oil prices, supply chain disruptions, and increased government spending can contribute.
  • This erodes purchasing power, especially for essential items.
  • While the Reserve Bank of India works to control inflation, it can impact daily life, strain budgets, and hinder economic growth.
  • Recent data shows a decline in inflation, but core inflation in certain sectors remains high.
  • This means that some everyday necessities may still see price increases.
  • The government faces a challenge in balancing inflation control with supporting vulnerable populations.
  • India must balance promoting its post-pandemic economy with limiting inflation.
  • It will be important to observe whether these initiatives stabilise the country’s economic environment in the upcoming months.
