• Set design: Consider how the setting of the film influenced its other elements. Did it add or subtract from the experience for you? If the movie was filmed in a real place, was this location well-chosen?

It goes without saying that you need to watch a movie before you write a review for it, so, before you do anything else, watch the movie at least once. Don't worry about trying to pick up specific details on your first watch, just enjoy the movie and get a general impression of whether you liked it or not and what you liked or disliked. Ideally, you should watch the movie at least two times. On your second and third viewings, pay attention to movie review criteria like cinematography, acting, dialogue, character development, deeper meanings, etc. Read some film review examples to get a sense of the things they talk about.

Pause the movie on your second and third viewings and take notes on things that stand out to you. Don't be afraid to take as many notes as you want, after all these notes are just for you.  You might not use all the notes you have taken, but they will help you compose the main part of your body paragraphs.

A lot of people like movies and films. These things add thrill and imaginations to our lives. This, therefore, makes us come to the conclusion that a movie is worth a review if it has been watched. Everyone can review a movie, but there are still some differences between the reviewing done by experts, and reviewing done by amateurs – the amateurs are not usually focused on the minutiae of the film in the same way, and are instead focused more on the general ideas presented.

The primary purpose of movie review writing is to give the reader a rough idea of what the movie is about. The movie review greatly determines if an individual wants to watch the movie or not. This type of writing should, therefore, be detailed enough to assist the reader in making an honest decision. As much as the review is based on elaborating the movie review outline, it should not give away the plot of the movie or the surprises that make the movie enjoyable. Opinions on a movie need to be stated clearly, good or bad. If the review is to be brief, stars and scores can also be used to express the reviewer’s thoughts. A good writer should, therefore, have the basic knowledge of how to write a movie review.

• Great movie : Almost Christmas is a movie that has balanced all its features to make a great movie. All the characters fit their roles and make the plot come to life. The costumes and the soundtracks are a plus as they enhance the emotions and feelings of every story line. Almost Christmas is, therefore, a movie worth watching.
• Good movie :  London has Fallen is an okay movie. The graphics were on point as well as the sound effects. The cast, however, I felt weren’t up to the task, and did not bring out the feel of the movie. The actors, therefore, led to what was otherwise quite a good time-killing movie (if not a good movie overall) being let down. Additionally, the plot was difficult to comprehend.
• Bad movie :  No matter how much you watch Central Intelligence, you can’t get a hold of the movie. The stunts are overrated, and the storyline is off, making the movie boring. The movie is a definite no, and not even worth spending time watching when there is nothing else to watch on TV. Definitely a flop.

2. Complete analysis (Forrest Gump)

• Plot analysis : the movie falls in the genre of modern fiction (modern history is generally considered to stretch from the fifteenth century up, although this category is further divided into early modern (1500s to 1700s) and late modern (1700s to present), with Tom Hanks playing the role of Forrest Gump. His character moves through history and survives all the hardships with decency and honesty.
• Soundtrack analysis : the soundtrack reflects the mood that was popular at the time, which, in turn, creates urgency. The songs are great hits and are appropriate for children to listen to as well. The soundtrack helps to illustrate the transitions of the film’s locations – from warm and safe territory to a more hostile borders. For instance, the song by Fleetwood (Go Your Way) is used to illustrate how Forrest is joined by his friends in his journey. The soundtrack is an integral part of the movie experience, as it brings an emotional centre-point to the move by helping people to better understand just how high the stakes are in certain scenes. The soundtrack is also to convey the terrifying nature of the war scenes, thus helping the movie to pack even more of an emotional punch.
• Atmosphere : later on in the movie, the atmosphere changes – the troops go out on patrol and are far away from their bases which are safe. The atmosphere becomes tense, and at the same time captivating. Having the atmosphere change throughout a movie emphasises that what is happening is actually serious and will have consequences, and the movie Forrest Gump is no different. If the atmosphere is incorrect, then, the movie will not feel so real to the people who are watching it.  the movie starts with the atmosphere of the beach party. Music is playing in the background, and people are enjoying barbecue and playing cards. The troops are not left behind as they are seen loading crates of beers in their trucks.
• The main idea of the film : The main idea portrayed in Forrest Gump is that life is filled with unknown surprises. This is substantially illustrated by Forrest Gump himself, who is just a country boy with learning difficulties. Forrest, however, does not let this obstacle define him, and goes to great lengths to be a relevant person in history. The film, while containing some darkness and violence due to the war and its aftermath, is therefore an uplifting and invigorating film, as it shows how people can prevail against all odds, and even thrive. A film needs to have one (or possibly two, though more is of course harder to maintain) main idea if it is to remain coherent throughout.
• Actors play analysis : Tom Hanks fits the role perfectly as he manages to express the love for the country. He portrays the feelings of sadness and comedy at the same time. Forrest, therefore, makes the movie interesting. Tom Hanks is a strong actor, and it is mainly due to his efforts as the lead which make the film as powerful and memorable as it is.

The purpose of  The Compass Rose  is to raise awareness of  Special Collections'  resources and to foster the use of these resources. The blog series also reports significant new programs, initiatives, and acquisitions of Special Collections. 

This is the newest in an ongoing series spotlighting new acquisitions and reproductions of our content. For more on our previous featured material, read our previously published  Quarterly Review  blogs.

Special Collections is continually acquiring new materials and image reproductions of items from our collections are regularly used in new publications and by media outlets. This post reviews where and how materials from our collections are being used around the world in January, February, and March of 2024.

This quarter, Special Collections hosted a total of 1,504 visitors and 127 of those visitors were here to conduct research in our collections! Over 200 unique archival collections, books, and maps were pulled for research this quarter, with researchers showing strong interest in UTA Yearbooks , Celestial Maps, Antarctica Maps (Finfrock Map Collection), the Mexican American Farm Workers Collection , and the Migrant Farm Workers Organizing Movement Collection .

SPCO Class Visits

Students from a variety of classes visit Special Collections to engage in experiential learning activities using our unique materials. From January to March, we welcomed 42 classes from a variety of disciplines. Visits this quarter have included History, Modern Languages including English, Spanish, German, and Latin, Biology, Gender, Women and Sexualities, and Art & Art History. We also welcomed over 150 local K-12 students from three different schools. Pictured below are two examples from class instruction over the past few months.

Students from Dr. Kim Breuer’s Medieval Science and Technology History class have embedded in Special Collections once a week to research and create a digital exhibition on celestial charts. The students engaged with selected maps from Johann Doppelmayr’s Atlas Coeleste (1742) and Andreas Cellarius’ Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660). Their digital exhibit, created in partnership with Whitney Russell and the Libraries' Open Partnerships and Services department, can be viewed here: mavmatrix.uta.edu/exhibit/celestial-wonders . The students learned how to write metadata and exhibit labels and captions, and also helped with the creation of Special Collections’ current exhibit: Theoria Eclipsium: Curiosity, Captivation, Connection , on view through August 30, 2024.

Students from Dr. Lauren Sperandio-Phelps Motherhood class came to Special Collections to work with our rich collections of family papers. The students analyzed letters, diaries, and other materials that shed light on being a mother in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Our collections can be used to study a wide variety of topics, as this class session proves!

Newly Processed Collections

• This collection consists of digital photographs and videos documenting the experience of Rangers fans and the Arlington community during the Texas Rangers’ 2023 World Series run and the celebrations that followed.
• This collection contains the personal papers of Texas labor activist and organizer Henry R. "The Fox" Muñoz, Jr. (1920-1989) and includes articles, letters, awards, organizing materials, photographs, speeches and reports, and related biographical information on Muñoz.

• UTA English Language Institute (ELI) Records (AR831)
• UTA Faculty Senate Recordings Collection (AR832)
• This collection contains records of UTA faculty member Truman Black regarding his time serving on the UTA Library Committee. These materials offer insight into UTA Library operations, finances, and development.
• This collection contains records regarding donations Lloyd Clark (former North Texas Agricultural College student from 1940-1942) made to the university, events that he was invited to (particularly alumni reunions and gala events), and correspondence regarding his involvement in university affairs with dates ranging from 1988-2006. This collection was processed by Anthony White, a student volunteer from the Department of History.

Texas Rangers World Series Collection

Immediately following the Rangers’ historic World Series win and subsequent celebrations in 2023, Special Collections put out a call to the community for donations of digital photographs and videos documenting the Rangers’ playoff run, the World Series, and the post-win celebrations. To learn more about the collection and how we preserve the digital donations, read our most recent Compass Rose blog post .

After being in Arlington for over 50 years, in 2023 the Rangers won their first World Series, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays, the Baltimore Orioles, the Houston Astros, and the Arizona Diamondbacks to reach the pinnacle of the baseball world. Throughout the month of October 2023, Arlington and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex played host to numerous playoff games, watch parties, community gatherings, and a victory parade attended by an estimated 700,000 people. This collection consists of digital photographs and videos documenting the experience of Rangers fans and the Arlington community during the Texas Rangers’ 2023 World Series run and the celebrations that followed.

Henry R. Muñoz, Jr. Papers

The Henry R. Muñoz, Jr. Papers , one of our recently processed collections in the Texas Labor Archives, contains the personal papers of Texas labor activist and organizer Henry R. "The Fox" Muñoz, Jr. (1920-1989) and includes articles, letters, awards, organizing materials, photographs, speeches and reports, and related biographical information on Muñoz.

Early in his career, Muñoz worked as a linotype operator was involved in the International Typographical Union, where he became a union organizer. He later worked for Bexar County Commissioner Albert Peña and helped found the San Antonio branch of the Political Association of Spanish Speaking Organizations (PASSO), which worked to increase Mexican-American participation in electoral politics and elect Mexican-Americans to political office.

From 1963 to 1972, Muñoz worked for the Texas AFL-CIO and worked closely with the AFL-CIO's counterpart in Mexico, the Confederación de Trabajadores de México (CTM), promoted workers rights, and actively participated in and led political campaigns throughout the State of Texas. In 1972, Muñoz went on to work for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 2399 in San Antonio, where he led campaigns to organize workers at the City of San Antonio, the Bexar County Hospital District, the City Water Board, and Independent School Districts, as well as in Corpus Christi.

Acquisitions of Printed Materials

Celestial atlases.

These celestial atlases, a gift of Donald Sheff, are a significant addition to our collection of celestial maps, especially as all eyes will be on the sky for the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8th!

Johann Leonhard Rost’s Atlas portatilis coelestis (Nürnberg: J.E. Udelbulner, 1723) is a portable celestial atlas published as an astronomical handbook and lavishly illustrated with celestial maps, globes, spheres, constellations and diagrams. The Atlas portatilis coelestis contains an introduction on the subject and the principles of astronomy, discussing not only astronomy in general, but also geometry, globes, ecliptics, terrestrial zones, climates, meridians, the Ptolemaic, Tychonic and Copernican solar systems, celestial globes, constellations, planets, comets, eclipses of the sun, a geographical description of the moon, and much more. All of this information is accompanied by engraved plates and maps, including a double-page view of the surface of the moon. 

John Flamsteed's Atlas céleste , Second Edition, edited by J. Fortin (Paris: Chez F.G. Deschamps et chez l'auteur, 1776), contains 30 double-page engraved celestial maps and a catalogue of stars at the end of the volume. A globe maker for the French royal family, J. Fortin prepared this edition of Flamsteed’s celestial atlas in a much reduced format. Flamsteed was the first Astronomer Royal, who oversaw the building of the Greenwich Observatory. Newton relied upon Flamsteed’s star positions in his Principia.

UTA Football Alumni Reunion

Special Collections had the opportunity to participate in the UTA football alumni reunion event on February 24 and display items from our collections dating from the 1920s to 1985. According to The Shorthorn , "roughly 100 alumnus piled into College Park Center to reminisce on memories from their days of playing and re-energize the campaign to bring football back." We enjoyed the opportunity to listen to stories from alumni and experience seeing them finding themselves in the historical material we have preserved! Mini-Exhibits

This quarter, UTA Special Collections staff curated two mini-exhibits, which are designed to highlight a specific topic or commemorate an event in history utilizing materials from our collections.

"The Journey of the Sleeping Car Porters" mini-exhibit

In February, we celebrated Black History Month in our "Journey of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters" mini-exhibit by showcasing materials in the collection relating to the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP), founded in 1925 as the first African American labor union. Highlights included: the American Federation of Labor’s Certificate of Affiliation for the Sleeping Car Porters Union, No. 18089 of Fort Worth, Texas, signed in 1929, from our Labor Union Charter Collection; records and firsthand accounts from Pullman porters and BSCP union members Conway McDermott and James Henry Saunders; and items relating to the union’s founder A. Philip Randolph and the A. Philip Randolph Institute he founded with Bayard Rustin in 1965. Special Collections also hosted a small display on the 3rd floor of the library showcasing additional materials in celebration of Black History Month. There were a total of 127 people that viewed this mini-exhibit.

In March, we celebrated Women's History Month in our "Women Who Paved the Way" mini-exhibit by showcasing materials in the collection relating to the stories of local women and the historic "firsts" they achieved in their lifetime. Highlights included: "Lucille's treasure chest of fine foods" by Lucille Bishop Smith (1972), the first Black businesswoman of Texas; two awards from the American Association of University Women granted to Etta Hulme, the first female editorial cartoonist to work for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram ; and a 1984 Master's Thesis written by Kalpana Chawla, the first Indian woman in space, submitted as part of her Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering degree from UTA. There were a total of 73 people that viewed this mini-exhibit.

Image Reproduction Highlights

The  Fort Worth Star-Telegram  collection, which came in increments to UTA Libraries from 1984 to 2022, is often used in a variety of news articles and columns published by the original donor, the  Fort Worth Star-Telegram . 'The Notebook" cuts between the same couple at two seasons in their lives. We see them in the urgency of young romance, and then we see them as old people, she disappearing into the shadows of Alzheimer's, he steadfast in his love. It is his custom every day to read to her from a notebook that tells the story of how they met and fell in love and faced obstacles to their happiness. Sometimes, he says, if only for a few minutes, the clouds part and she is able to remember who he is and who the story is about.

We all wish Alzheimer's could permit such moments. For a time, in the earlier stages of the disease, it does. But when the curtain comes down, there is never another act and the play is over. "The Notebook" is a sentimental fantasy, but such fantasies are not harmful; we tell ourselves stories every day, to make life more bearable. The reason we cried during " Terms of Endearment " was not because the mother was dying, but because she was given the opportunity for a dignified and lucid parting with her children. In life it is more likely to be pain, drugs, regret and despair.

The lovers are named Allie Nelson and Noah Calhoun, known as Duke. As old people they're played by Gena Rowlands and James Garner . As young people, by Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling . The performances are suited to the material, respecting the passion at the beginning and the sentiment at the end, but not pushing too hard; there is even a time when young Noah tells Allie, "I don't see how it's gonna work," and means it, and a time when Allie gets engaged to another man.

She's a rich kid, summering at the family's mansion in North Carolina. He's a local kid who works at the sawmill but is smart and poetic. Her parents are snobs. His father ( Sam Shepard ) is centered and supportive. Noah loves her the moment he sees her, and actually hangs by his hands from a bar on a Ferris wheel until she agrees to go out with him. Her parents are direct: "He's trash. He's not for you." One day her mother ( Joan Allen ) shows her a local working man, who looks hard-used by life, and tells Allie that 25 years ago she was in love with him. Allie thinks her parents do not love each other, but her mother insists they do; still, Allen is such a precise actress that she is able to introduce the quietest note of regret into the scene.

The movie is based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks , whose books inspired "Message in a Bottle" (1999), unloved by me, and " A Walk to Remember " (2002), which was so sweet and positive it persuaded me (as did Mandy Moore as its star). Now here is a story that could have been a tearjerker, but -- no, wait, it is a tearjerker, it's just that it's a good one. The director is Nick Cassavetes , son of Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes , and perhaps his instinctive feeling for his mother helped him find the way past soap opera in the direction of truth.

Ryan Gosling has already been identified as one of the best actors of his generation, although usually in more hard-edged material. Rachel McAdams, who just a few months ago was the bitchy high school queen in " Mean Girls ," here shows such beauty and clarity that we realize once again how actors are blessed by good material. As for Gena Rowlands and James Garner: They are completely at ease in their roles, never striving for effect, never wanting us to be sure we get the message. Garner is an actor so confident and sure that he makes the difficult look easy, and loses credit for his skill. Consider how simply and sincerely he tells their children: "Look, guys, that's my sweetheart in there." Rowlands, best-known for high-strung, even manic characters, especially in films by her late husband, here finds a quiet vulnerability that is luminous.

The photography by Robert Fraisse is striking in its rich, saturated effects, from sea birds at sunset to a dilapidated mansion by candlelight to the texture of Southern summer streets. It makes the story seem more idealized; certainly the retirement home at the end seems more of heaven than of earth.

And the old mansion is underlined, too, first in its decay and then in its rebirth; young Noah is convinced that if he makes good on his promise to rebuild it for Allie, she will come to live in it with him, and paint in the studio he has made for her. ("Noah had gone a little mad," the notebook says.) That she is engaged to marry another shakes him but doesn't discourage him.

We have recently read much about Alzheimer's because of the death of Ronald Reagan. His daughter Patti Davis reported that just before he died, the former president opened his eyes and gazed steadily into those of Nancy, and there was no doubt that he recognized her.

Well, it's nice to think so. Nice to believe the window can open once more before closing forever.
