What about your university’s policies for hoods

• Some Doctoral students don’t have to worry as much about getting the hood right because their Graduation involves a traditional hooding ceremony.
• Determine your university’s policies for hoods. How you wear your hood will depend on your whether you put it on yourself, or a professor places the hood on you at your ceremony. If you’re participating in a hooding ceremony, you may need to drape your hood over your arm or shoulder while you wait for it to be placed over your neck. Ask your university about your specific hooding timeline and instructions.

How to wear your hood ? Step 1-3

• Unfold your hood. place it on a flat surface so you can ensure that it’s properly prepared before you put it on or drape it over your arm or shoulder.
• Turn out the velvet lining. Your hood will have a velvet lining that extends down from the top, or where you’ll be putting your head. This brightly colored velvet indicates your degree, so it should be facing out.
• Turn out the satin trim. About halfway down the velvet lining, most hoods will have a satin trim that reflects the school colors. Fold this out so that the velvet remains visible on the top half of the hood, and the trim is showing on the bottom half. Hoods will also generally include a small button and cord that you can secure horizontally across this halfway-point to keep the satin trim visible. (This fold should be right below your shoulder blades when the hood is placed over your head.)

How to wear your hood ? Step 4-6

• Place the hood over your head. An academic hood is meant to drape down your back. You should also make sure the small, pointed end of the hood, usually also lined in velvet, is laid flat at the base of your neck.
• Secure the hood using the cord and a button or pin. Most hoods include a small cord that hangs off the triangular end that goes around your neck. Loop this cord around a shirt button or a purposefully made button inside your graduation gown to keep the hood safely in place. Once the hood has been secured to your clothing or the inside of your academic gown, you may close your robe.
• Ask a family member or friend to check the folding.

In addition to the degree colors, each school generally has its own colors. If you know the colors that you need, be sure to let us know. Otherwise, let us know which school is your alma mater, and we will look up the colors for you.

As each hood is custom-made according to your school colors, degree colors, and type of degree (BA, MA, or PhD), we ask that you give us about +/- 8 weeks to process your order, especially during the graduation season. What if you don't have that much time to wait?

All hoods are priced by quantity. You do not have to purchase every hood the same to receive a the discount. For example, if you are ordering a large quantity of caps, gowns and hoods for faculty use but require your hoods to be in many different colors (as your faculty has graduated from different universities and holds different degrees), you would still receive the quanity discount!

What kind of hood do you need? You should purchase your hood to match the gown you have selected.

Deluxe quality PhD hoods / Doctoral hoods

The correct velvet for all Ph.D degrees is dark blue, representing the mastery of the discipline of scholarship. On the other hand, the correct velvet color for all non PhD doctoral holders (as well as masters and bachelors) would be that of their particular field. That means that while a Doctor of Education (EdD) would receive light blue velvet, a PhD in English would receive the dark blue velvet. A non-PhD Doctor of Science would receive Gold velvet, but a PhD in Science would receive the dark Blue Velvet. A non PhD Doctor of Engineering would receive Orange Velvet, but a PhD in Engineering would each receive the dark blue velvet. To avoid confusion, it is very important therefore for all doctors ordering hoods to clearly specify whether they are a PhD (and would be receiving the dark blue velvet regardless of their field) or a Doctor of …

Alternatevely, piping may be added to PhD hoods for PhD holders wishing to indicate their field of discipline. For example we could add gold piping to hood of a PhD of Science, or Light Blue piping for a PhD of Education to indicate their particular field of study since otherwise one would only be able to recognize that the person has a PhD (from their velvet), but not know what the PhD is in.

Doctoral Regalia:

About Academic Hoods for Graduation

Academic hoods trace their history back to the medieval time period. There were colorful silk hoods and fur-lined hoods that were worn by academics in the 16th century. They became associated with learned people since hoods had mostly fallen out of fashion after window glazing became common among laymen in the 15th century.

The length and shape of the hood itself are designed to show the level of education the wearer has received. For example, a bachelor’s hood has a “simple” design, meaning it only has a cow and liripipe (tail,) and was only three feet in length. The master’s hood, was similar, but had a liripipe of four feet in length. Due to its high cost and low prestige, it was often omitted from academic dress – a tradition that continues today.

Standardizing Graduation Hoods

The Intercollegiate Code was one of the first documents used to standardize academic hoods. It initially stated that the hood should be edged with either stain, silk or velvet – in a special color that would show the degree title of the wearer, as it appears on their diploma.

This lining was originally intended to be no wider than six inches. However, over time some major universities stipulated a width of no more than four inches. Below shows the standard velvet sizes.

• Velvet edging 2 inches wide for bachelor’s hoods
• Velvet edging 3 inches wide for master’s hoods
• Velvet edging 5 inches wide for doctoral hoods

We have adopted these standards. Velvet is the most often-used material, as it provided a good contrast to the softer, silken material and complemented other design aspects of the doctoral gown.

However, as there were hundreds of different educational institutions in the US, it became difficult to assign a unique lining pattern for the hood.

In the case of Ph.D. hoods, the wearer will normally wear the Ph.D. blue velvet on his or her hood regardless of the field or discipline of their Ph.D. This means, for example, that whereas a Doctor of Education (Ed.D) would wear sky blue velvet representing Education, a Ph.D. in Education would wear the darker Ph.D. blue. For that reason, it is important that Ph.D. holders order their hoods as Ph.D. hoods rather than Doctor of... hoods. The cost of Ph.D. and doctoral hoods, and post-doctoral Masters hoods is $145.00 with piping, or $130.00 without piping.

Doctoral Hooding

How doctoral hooding works.

The hooding ceremony is a unique recognition of the achievement of each student who has earned a doctorate or final master’s degree.

Each doctoral candidate is introduced individually during the ceremony. You will have your hood placed on you in front of the stage on the field. Both doctoral candidates and their faculty mentors should review these guidelines before Commencement.

Faculty Mentors

Your faculty mentor will hood you as a doctoral candidate. If you do not have a mentor present, a Commencement marshal will hood you.

The Procession

• You and your peers will walk into Carroll Stadium and sit according to school. You will follow the red school banners through the hall to guide you to your seat.
• If you’re hooded by a mentor, please walk in and sit with them.
• While you are robing in the lineup, you’ll receive two name cards to fill out. Fill out the cards with your name, making sure it is legible. The cards are for announcing you during the ceremony. If you think the announcer may not know how to pronounce your name, include pronunciation help.
• You should have your hoods unfolded and draped over the left arm. Carry your name cards in your right hand.

Instructions for Hooding

• Once your school is announced, stand with the person who is hooding you and walk to the stage. A marshal will give you instructions for where and how to get to the stage.
• Your hooder will wait in front of the stage near a platform. Students without a hooder follow the direction of the marshals.
• You will climb several steps to the stage. Please contact us if you have any difficulty climbing stairs.
• You will give your name cards to the reader, and they will introduce you. You will then walk across the stage.
• Once you leave the stage, walk in front of the stage.
• Your faculty mentor or a marshal will hood you. For the hooding, you should remove your cap and face away from the hooder. Once you’re hooded, return to your seat.

This is the ninth in a series of weekly blog posts about the work of Marquette Law School’s Office of Student Affairs. The previous post and links to all prior posts from this series can be found at this link .

Or, as you may see it advertised, the Hooding and Commencement Ceremony. We use a variety of terms interchangeably to refer to the event, which historically has taken place on the third Saturday in May. Graduates walk across the stage and receive their law degree.

That sounds so sterile for such a meaningful event, doesn’t it? In fact—in truth—this event is rich and meaningful, both for our graduates, their families, friends, and guests and for those of us who work at the Law School—faculty and staff. It is inspiring to see students, who were nervous and maybe even a little scared when we first greeted them at Orientation, walk confidently across the stage at Commencement. We get to cheer for students who have gone through hardship triumph as they pass this important finish line. We celebrate not just how far all of our graduates have come but also the bright futures that await them.

The purpose of this blog post is to take you behind the scenes of graduation as it comes together.

The Law School’s Office of Student Affairs coordinates the “show,” but on the day-of, it’s an all-hands on deck production, which includes our Events, Facilities, and Tech teams, our Admissions Office, and a number of colleagues from the Law Library.

Planning for graduation starts before the academic year even begins (there’s a mark of our confidence). The prior spring (i.e., that of most graduates’ 2L year), we’re already in contract negotiations with the venue for the following May. And the dean is often considering and sending out an invitation to a potential guest speaker a year ahead.

Each year, we assess and revise, with an eye toward enhancing the experience for our graduates and their guests. Here are just a handful of those seemingly small details to which we’ve given a lot of thought:

• Graduation itself almost can be said to start before the day of graduation. As busy as the run up to graduation is for me personally (someone must go through all the regalia orders and ensure that tickets are counted and everything is in order), the Regalia Pickup and Graduate Fair, in Eckstein Hall a couple of days before graduation, is honestly one of my own favorite days. This has been a post-COVID initiative that might seem very business-oriented and straightforward (graduates need to get their regalia and tickets somehow), but we wanted to make sure to convey the message to our graduates that even when they leave us, they are not alone . The Law Alumni Association Board, the State Bar of Wisconsin, and the Milwaukee Bar Association all join in to welcome our soon-to-be new lawyers and help them get connected to resources and networks that will allow them to continue to be successful after leaving their student days behind.
• We know how important it is to hear a graduate’s name said correctly. It’s why we request that graduates submit a recording of their names in advance. Our name reader then reviews the names in advance and does her best to deliver the memorable moment for the graduates and their families.
• Why would we insist on having graduates seated and called on stage in alphabetical order by last name? It is so that families, friends, and guests of our law student know when to expect their graduate to walk across the stage and be hooded, and they don’t have to worry about sneezing and missing the big moment. (I won’t even tell you what happens to our elaborate seating charts when a graduate cancels last minute!)
• Like a wedding, commencement can be a whirlwind experience. Looking back at my own graduations, I even have some regrets about missing out on photos with some classmates or missing an opportunity to introduce a mentor to my family because everyone scattered immediately after the ceremony. That’s why we have a reception in the rotunda outside of the theater, immediately following the formal ceremony. It gives everyone the chance to breathe a bit, mingle, socialize, and capture those opportunities with graduates, their families, friends, and our faculty and staff. (Pro tip: The dean likes being asked to join a photo.) [*]

Again, those are just a few examples of details requiring our attention. If all goes to plan (and it always seems to), we’ve created a two-hour (in other words, brief, for a commencement ceremony) quality event that our graduates and their guests will remember fondly. Although you may hear me say that graduation planning is a well-oiled machine, it’s only because we take so much care throughout the year to make sure all the little details are just right (I have the spreadsheets to prove it). Even those little details have major impacts.

[*] Beyond graduation, providing professional photography is another post-COVID initiative that we hope makes even more special the swearing-in or admission ceremony, which takes place in Madison the Monday after commencement. The Law School reserves an awesome photographer to capture each of our newest Marquette lawyers signing Wisconsin’s roll of attorneys. It’s always a treat to share these photos of this “magic moment.”
