M.Sc. in Psychiatry Research

Developing skills in research, master's in psychiatry research.

The two year graduate program equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed as professionals in clinical and neuroscience research concerning mental health and illness.The coursework covers relevant current topics including clinical trials, genetics, neuroimaging, participatory research, psychotherapy research, early interventions, and personalized psychiatry. Students will improve their skills in critical appraisal, study design, statistics, data analysis, and scientific writing. Each student will complete an independent Master's thesis research project under the supervision of one of our faculty. You will find a list of faculty supervisors and possible thesis projects on our  supervisors page .

The deadline for new applicants to the September 2024 class is Dec. 1, 2023 . This includes references and supporting documentation sent by email to Anila Balakrishnan .  

PhD in Psychiatry Research

This three-to-five-year graduate program equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed as doctoral-level professionals in clinical and neuroscience research concerning mental health and illness. The coursework covers advanced statistics and experiential psychiatry, as well as two comprehensives. Students will achieve advanced level skills in critical appraisal, study design, statistics, complex data analysis, scientific writing, and understanding of psychiatric illnesses. Each student will complete independent Doctoral dissertation research under the supervision of one of our faculty. You will find a list of faculty supervisors and possible thesis projects on our  supervisors page .

Wise Prescribing and Deprescribing: Opioid Skills for the Frontline Clinician (Online Modules) Edition 2024

About the course.

The Wise Prescribing and Deprescribing: Opioid Skills for the Frontline Clinician Course provides opportunities for you to review the principles and guidelines for opioid tapering, reflect on your own practices, and discuss enablers and barriers with the facilitator and peers. 

There are patient and health care provider interview video clips in these modules. For your active thinking, there are reflective notes inserted in the videos. Please respect the interviewees’ contribution to this education program. They have consented to sharing their interviews for your personal learning use, and this information must not be shared beyond participants in this course.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the online modules, learners will be able to:

  • Identify whether opioid tapering is an appropriate plan for a given patient
  • Plan a tapering discussion that is evidence-based and responsive to the patient’s readiness for change
  • Execute an opioid taper with a motivated patient
  • Troubleshoot challenges that occur during an opioid taper

TO NAVIGATE THROUGH THE ONLINE MODULES

  • It is not recommended to access the online modules on smartphones at this point as your learning experience might be compromised.
  • There are required learning activities in the course, such as reviewing video materials, viewing and downloading PDF resources, responding to questions and responding to some course evaluation survey questions.
  • “MARK COMPLETE”: When you go through the course the first time, you will notice the “MARK COMPLETE” button in the pages. Make sure clicking on it when you reach the bottom of a page. After you complete the whole course, the “MARK COMPLETE” will not be there anymore when you revisit the content.
  • ‘RESUME LEARNING”: Please be aware that it will take you approximately one hour to complete the modules. For the convenience of self-paced learning, you may exit from the middle of the course and come back later. When you log into the e-learning portal again, click on ‘RESUME LEARNING’, and you will be redirected to where you left last time.
  • CME Certificate / Certificate of Completion for the Online Modules: Once you have completed the modules, you will find the ‘Print Your Certificate’ button available at the top of this page. You may choose to print it or download it as PDF document.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This one-credit-per-hour Self-Learning program meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by the University of Calgary Office of Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development for up to 7.0 Mainpro+ credits.

This activity is an Accredited Self-Assessment Program (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by the University of Calgary Office of Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development. You may claim a maximum of 7.0 hours (credits are automatically calculated).

You may also perform Linking Learning exercises around a question you ask yourself as a result of learning from this course at:  http://www.cfpc.ca/Linking_Learning_exercises/ . Each completed Linking Learning exercise earns up to five Mainpro+ certified credits.

Accredited Royal College MOC Section 1 and Section 3 credits are eligible for certified Mainpro+ credits, up to a maximum of 50 credits per five-year cycle; any additional credits are eligible as non-certified Mainpro+ credits. MOC Section 3 accredited activities can be claimed at 3 credits per hour up to the cycle maximum.
